The Oya History Museum, located in Utsunomiya City, Tochigi Prefecture, is a former quarry that has been transformed into a unique exhibition space. The museum showcases the history of Oya stone mining and its techniques, displaying tools used for hand excavation from Japan's feudal era to the 1950s. The underground quarry spans an impressive 20 thousand square meters at a depth of 30 meters, creating a mysterious atmosphere akin to an underground temple or pyramid.
The Ōya History Museum is a fascinating and awe-inspiring site built within a massive former stone quarry that showcases the history of Ōya stone mining. The highlight is the enormous underground chamber, stretching deep beneath the surface with cathedral-like ceilings and dramatic lighting — a truly breathtaking sight that feels otherworldly. Ōya stone, known for its unique texture and warm tone, has been used in many important architectural works, including by Frank Lloyd Wright in the design of Tokyo’s former Imperial Hotel, adding historical and artistic significance to the site. The museum tells the story of how the stone was quarried, shaped, and used, offering a glimpse into both traditional craftsmanship and Japan’s industrial heritage.

Date of enjoyment: 10/4/25 Came here first thing they opened, there is a sizeable car parking and free, the entrance has toilets carved out of the mountain rock. There were already tour buses of people so this place does get popular. There’s food options and souvenir shops with crafts from local artists. The venue is all underground so prams are not suitable, it also gets cold so bring a jacket. The museum itself is impressive however there’s not much to do other getting your photos taken for a fee and reading the sign boards. Allow a max of 1.5hrs here to explore the museum.
Jay C — Google review
This was my second time going to this museum. There is no reservation needed. But underground is kinda chill(around 10°c). So, make sure you bring an extra jacket with you even in summer. After the museum, there is also a big Kanon statue to visit.
LING C — Google review
It was an amazing experience. we enjoyed our trip inside the mountain. it was cold inside so make sure to bring a jacket. We took bus #1 from utsunomiya station bus terminal and arrived at the base of the parking lot. its a short walk up the main visitor centre/mountain entrance where we bought our tickets. Our whole visit inside took less than an hour. it was something unique and cool thats why we enjoyed it. highly recommended if you are staying in the area (utsunomiya).
Rowell S — Google review
It reminds me of the 1985 film Brazil by Terry Gilliam. Big sublime quarry. It can take all day to get there and back to Tokyo. I say go if you are near or quarry lovers. If you go, make sure to check the bus schedule because it is less frequent. Oh, eat Gyoza at Utsunomiya station. Any store is really good.
Yomi M — Google review
Incredible stone quarry now used for events and tourism. Worth a visit. Scale of quarrying is impressive particularly the chasms created and their high ceilings.
Richard Z — Google review
Great place, inside the museum it is always cold, so be prepared with some warm clothing if you are sensitive to cold. However the mine is very beautiful, a new experience
Ramesh C — Google review
Entry Fee 800 yen. Beware inside are quite cold (15°C) and will have water droplet from the ceiling. Although this place is not my priority place to visit, after this tour, I changed my mind and definitely recommend it. Inside is unexpectedly huge, chilling. Sunlight pierced through the gap of the cave is very breathtaking. Also kudos to the lighting design inside, the layout and color illuminated the cave to bring out cavernous atmosphere.

Park
Nature & Parks
Utsunomiya Castle Ruins Park is a small park surrounding a restored hilltop castle, offering a peaceful retreat amidst nature. It's popular for picnics under cherry blossoms in spring and is located about a 10-minute walk from Futaarayama Shrine. The park features the reconstructed western keep of the former castle, which was built in the Heian Period and used as lodging for the shogun during the Edo Period.
Utsunomiya Castle is famous in history for the Utsunomiya Fishing Ceiling Incident, has been revived in the castle ruins park. Many local and tourist citizens enjoy a walk here. Good open green grass area here for kids to play. Place is very neat and clean. It is just 20min walk from JR Utsunomiya station west side.
Chetan T — Google review
This was a really pleasant surprise. A portion of the castle has been restored to the medieval era plans. We were treated to complimentary tour by an English-speaking guide. She gave us some history and showed us around one of the turrets.

A peaceful park built on the remains of Utsunomiya Castle — blending history, gardens, and city views. Perfect for a calm walk and photos. 🌿✨
Sazzadur R — Google review
Good place. Very small castle & rebuild. You can visit inside & no entry fees. Nothing much to see here. But can spend 1 hour with family. Also I front of free parking.
Akhil J — Google review
Visited in October 2020 It's essentially a remnant of a feudal castle that is repurposed as a park, which is unique. Typically, Japanese cities and towns just simply let their castle ruins (those that didn't survive intact through the post-feudal and World War 2 eras) to rot. Here, instead of fully restoring the castle or raze it, they preserved the moat, enclosure walls, and guard towers as they are. The inner part of the castle, which is now an empty ground, becomes a public space, where the locals do sports and other recreational activities, and occasionally local festivals. Surprisingly, elevators were installed to access the wall rampart. The guard towers also house some artifacts of the feudal era, but by the time of my visit, it was off limits and not in display for public.
Lontongstroong — Google review
One of the best place to see cherry blossoms, you can enjoy see and around, and you can take some photos There are some photo spot that you can create your own, some people doing camping too, just come and feel it!
Sheryl M — Google review
Somewhat interesting place in a nice setting. Beautiful during hanami (cherry blossom season) and one of the earliest places to enjoy sakura in Utsunomiya. Besides from the park and the reconstructed keeps/turrets and wall there's a small museum and information place with old maps, models and English speaking volunteer guides. Make sure to visit and let the guides tell you about the old castle, it's definitely worth the time. Now and then there are events and festivals held at the big grass lawn, including spring and gyoza festival.
TOKYOYO J — Google review
Visited during the gyoza festival. Great atmosphere. The small museum is interesting although nothing is in English

Utsunomiya Futaarayama Shrine is a storied complex with a rich history, accessed via stone steps and home to the Rei-sai thanksgiving festival in October. The shrine is an integral part of Utsunomiya's cultural heritage, dating back over 1,600 years. It has been a symbol of the city and holds great significance for locals.
stunningly peaceful—one of those places that instantly puts you at ease. If you're driving, do yourself (and your knees) a favor and use the parking lot at the hilltop.
Chayoot V — Google review
Visited in October 2020 Urban oasis in the heart of Utsunomiya. Like many shrines in Japanese cities, it's perched on top of a hill and can be reached by climbing a steep stair. There is no lift or escalator of any kind unlike in some downtown shrines elsewhere, so some cautions are needed. One can see down towards the bustling downtown and preserved Utsunomiya Castle some hundred of meters away.
Lontongstroong — Google review
It takes about 15 minutes on foot from JR Utsunomiya Station. It’s a bit of a walk, but you’ll see the large torii gate straight down the main street. By bus, get off at “Futaarayama Jinja-mae” and it’s right there. Climbing the stone steps gives you a pleasant view over the city. The shrine grounds are surprisingly quiet for being in the city center, and you can enjoy seasonal scenery such as cherry blossoms in spring and autumn leaves in fall. Restrooms are also available inside the grounds. The shrine has a long history, said to be founded about 1,600 years ago. The enshrined deity is Toyokiirihiko-no-Mikoto, known as the pioneer of this region. The name “Utsunomiya” itself is believed to come from this shrine. Although it feels far from the station, this shrine has always been the true center of the city. Utsunomiya originally developed as a castle town, and the shrine served as its guardian. When the railway was built later on the outskirts, the distance from the station became noticeable. It may take a little walk, but this is one of the best places to feel both the history and the atmosphere of Utsunomiya.
L O — Google review
A peaceful retreat from the busy city of Utsunomiya. Nestled atop a hill, you must climb several flights of stairs to reach the shrine, which had a restful and sacred air. It was quiet, yet lively with only a few people around noon time. The surrounding statues are interesting, and the contrast from bustling city to serene shrine was amazing.
ItzMe — Google review
A very large shrine with many special attractions. It's recommended to come early to be able to explore everything.
Maggie — Google review
I went to explore since I was in Utsunomiya. It was a nice place but there was so many stairs that I was already tired half way up. Though I was lugging a bunch of camera gear and was tired from traveling. I don’t know much of the history behind this place but known as Omyojin-sama or Futaara-san. With three deities Toyoki-Irihiko-no-Mikoto, Omononushi-no-Mikoto, and Kotoshironushi-no-Mikoto being worshipped.

Matsugamine Catholic Church, completed in 1932, is a stunning example of Romanesque architecture and is made entirely of Oya Stone, a unique volcanic stone found only in the nearby Oya Valley. Designed by Swiss architect Max Hinder, the church stands as the largest building constructed with Oya Stone. The interior features a large pipe organ and impressive stained glass windows that create a mesmerizing play of colors within the space.
Registered Japan heritage. Sunday has mass. Good to join Great church and building. Main gate may close but can go via back yard Free no ticket.
Yuniarto - — Google review
Completed in the 1930s, this Catholic church may not be a big draw for foreign tourists, but its exterior is made from Oya stone, so if you've been to the Oya quarry museum, you may want to see an example of large-scale construction using the material. It is free to enter and there are interesting carvings in the stone used inside as well.
Aaron M — Google review
This is one of the biggest building made out of Oya stone which is an ingenious material only found here in Utsunomiya. The stained glass looked nice but wasn’t really something I would travel out of my way for. It was enjoyable to see that there are Japanese people that are Catholics though.
William O — Google review

Utsunomiya Zoo, located in Utsunomiya, Tochigi Prefecture, is a charming escape into the animal kingdom. The zoo offers feeding encounters with giraffes, a petting zoo, and amusement rides set among seasonal cherry trees. With an affordable entrance fee of around 600 yen per person, it's a budget-friendly option for families and solo travelers alike.
I am giving 5 star for the cute animals. But overall my impression is, they aren’t really making enough space for the animals and not being fed well. They feel a bit cramped and hard to move around. Especially the elephant, it’s so lonely and it has hardly any space to move around. The tigers aren’t fed properly I feel as they are too skinny. I think customers won’t mind paying high entrance fee to feed and take care of the animals well. There was one zoo keeper, who was kind and he made us even touch the lion’s feet (of course via the heavy grilled window). He also clicked some photos for me on my mobile and gave me.
Lakshmi — Google review
Absolutely disgraceful. This zoo is a heartbreaking example of outdated, unethical animal captivity. The elephant Miyako has been held in miserable conditions for over 50 years with no proper space, no enrichment, and no natural environment. Her enclosure is shockingly small and barren — this is nothing short of animal abuse, plain and simple. Many of the animals here are confined to tiny, inadequate cages that reflect zero regard for animal welfare. The leadership of this zoo should be ashamed. This facility needs to be investigated immediately. Do not support this cruelty.
Michael C — Google review
This place has potential to be great but the lack of anything natural other that dirt and concrete and cages for the animals is very concerning. you can tell they are lonely and neglected in these small cages . No natural grass or forest area for them especially for the elephant and she's 50 years old ! The zoo need to retire them to a sanctuary where they can be free . The zoo will have the space to transform into an amusement park for family. Win win I see .
Sabrina N — Google review
Cool playground for kids. The tigers and giraffe here are pretty beautiful, but the facilities here are pretty old and I think it should be upgraded. There is a pool here, but you need to pay for it even when you have already paid for the ticket to get into the zoo. We like the animals here, but this zoo is really old. Personal recommend: ★ ★ ★ Family-friendly: ★ ★ ★ Date for couples: ★ ★ ★ Parking lot: ◯ free Services/meals/products/design: ★ ★ ★ Period for stay: 2 hours Charge: adults 1,400 yen kids, free Baby room/accessible toilet: ◯ Cleanness: ★ ★
William ( — Google review
I came for the the Jet Coaster, but got upset by how small the animal enclosures are. The Amusement area is ok and the Jet Coaster is unique, but I would like to see bigger enclosures for all animals *Photos of the rides only for reference
Charlotte B — Google review
Deeply Disappointed and Heartbroken by What I Saw I visited Mikayo the Elephant Zoo hoping to learn about and appreciate these beautiful animals, but I left feeling heartbroken. The elephant looked visibly distressed and confined to small, unnatural enclosures with little enrichment. It was painful to see such intelligent, social beings living in such poor conditions. There was little information provided about conservation or welfare efforts, and the overall atmosphere felt more like exploitation than education. Zoos have a responsibility to care for their animals and promote awareness — unfortunately, Utsunomiya Zoo failed to do either. I sincerely hope they take steps to improve Mikayo the elephants welfare, expand her habitat, and shift toward genuine conservation and ethical care. Until then, I can’t in good conscience recommend visiting.
Chloe H — Google review
It's small but suitable for small kids. Good chances to feed various animals. The chance to feed the hippo directly and actually touch it is something I haven't experienced anywhere else. The attached amusement park is really expensive and worth getting the pass if you have a couple of kids old enough to go on themselves .
Adrian S — Google review
It's an OK zoo. I really dislike the condition of the elephant, pigs, and some other animals. I believe that if there isn't enough space for the animals to move around then they don't belong at the zoo. This zoo doesn't have enough space for some animals and so they look depressed and are very unhappy. They even look a little sick from my perspective. I've been there twice. I went a second time because I wanted my infant son to see animals. I won't go back there to see animals. Maybe next time, just for amusement. The changing areas for babies are not sanitary enough. The facilities look very old and dirty. Other than those, you can have a nice time. Amusement Park, eating area, picnic, a few nice animals, pool and toys for kids. My favourite animal there is the giraffe. They look clean and healthy and have plenty of space to move around. You can feed them too.

Nature & Parks
Hachiman-yama Park is a charming hilltop park in Utsunomiya, known for its seasonal beauty. With around 800 cherry trees and vibrant azalea flowers, the park offers stunning natural displays. Visitors can enjoy evening light-ups that illuminate the blossoms and explore the park's suspension bridge leading to Adventure U Park, a great spot for kids. The park also features a small zoo and playgrounds.
Last week there was still no cherry blossom so I went back yesterday. This park is huge! There is a couple of things you can do here. I enjoyed spending time here with friends last week and some me-time yesterday. I also went winter January 2019. We went up the tower and the view was amazing. Due to covid, I did not go up the tower to avoid crowded and closed spaces. It could have been nice to see the cherry trees from a bird's eye view. This park is worth the visit.
Faith M — Google review
On the evening of April 14th, we stopped by on our way back from sightseeing in Nikko. Although the cherry blossom festival had already ended the day before, on the 13th, we were lucky to experience a beautiful flurry of falling cherry blossoms. I had also visited on Friday the 11th another client, when the festival was still ongoing despite the rainy weather, and were able to enjoy food from the snack-booth, such as grilled squid and takoyaki, octopus balls cooked in a special pan and topped with sause and bonito flakes. During the festival, lanterns were lit even after dark, creating a lovely atmosphere for viewing the cherry blossoms at night.
ITokyoTravel-iTokyoDrive T — Google review
Cute little park and very good for cherry blossoms. Has a small zoo with some sad looking birds. During hanami season has some food stalls at the top.

Went towards evening time and it was still so pretty. Just a cool and beautiful place to walk around and get some fresh air. A lot of shrines and historical things dotted around the area along with a zoo, the garden, park and the bridge which are all awesome to look at but also good photo opportunities. Is worth checking out if you're in Utsonomiya. About a 20-25 min walk from Utsonomiya Station.

Utsunomiya Gyōza-kai (Kirasse Store) is a must-visit for gyoza enthusiasts. Located in Utsunomiya, this underground food court showcases five of the city's top gyoza restaurants, offering a variety of fried or boiled meat and vegetable dumplings to sample. The casual dining atmosphere allows visitors to enjoy the delicious menus from each restaurant.
Gyoza Theme Park they call it! And they are right! In the basement there are shops selling frozen gyoza, gyoza keychains, gyoza flavored snacks, gyoza everything. Kirasse specializes in gathering gyoza from established restaurants around the city, and serving them up in their two restaurants where you can try many varieties from many stores in one visit. One restaurant serves a la carte of all the offerings, while the other restaurant serves mainly gyoza variety sets. The reasonable gyoza sets come with 2 gyoza from 5 different stores for a total of 10 gyoza an order. Very good value for money (840 yen per set), but you will need to line up from the LINE app. If you do not have the LINE app, you can still line up by telling staff that you do not have LINE and they will give you a physical ticket number.

Date of enjoyment: 11/4/25 Came here for dinner bb o o n a Wednesday night. We had to go through Don Quijote and down to the basement level. There are 5 gyoza restaurant that’s famous in the area has a stall here. The interesting thing was out of the 5 stalls one of the go on rest days one time during the weekdays. This means on a weekday there’s only 4 stalls to choose from. Only on the weekend will foodies get to see all the best Utsunomiya has to offer. If you went to the actual stores of the restaurant you will have to wait longer. This is a no longer an issue by visiting Kirasse. We ordered two best dishes from the food stalls and boy oh boy they are very tasty. From soup dumplings to dumplings with 7 different fillings. All in all the place does get busy on a Wednesday, with heaps of locals coming for dumplings and beer.
Jay C — Google review
I finally made it to this spot, and getting here was a breeze! The buses run frequently and it only takes four stops. What’s great is that all the famous shops are clustered together, so you can sample a little bit of everything without overstuffing yourself. Right next door, you’ll also find plenty of unique local souvenirs to take home. If you’re short on time, this is definitely a place I’d recommend checking out—you can experience so much in just one visit!
Cerise — Google review
We visited the Utsunomiya Gyōza-kai Kirasse Store and had a great experience. It is located in an underground food hall where several well-known gyoza shops each have their own counter. This makes it very easy to try a variety of gyoza styles in one place. We were able to mix and match pan-fried, boiled, and deep-fried gyoza, which was perfect for tasting the different flavours and textures. The service was fast, the atmosphere was casual and friendly, and the prices were reasonable too. It is definitely a convenient and enjoyable way to sample what Utsunomiya is most famous for. A must-visit stop for gyoza lovers.

Stopped by for a late supper after a nice walk around Tobu. Took a bit of effort to find the place (quick tip: it’s in the basement!), but totally worth it once we got there. We only managed to try a few menu items since we were already pretty full, but everything we had was absolutely delicious. They’re definitely masters of gyoza—crispy, juicy, and full of flavor. Prices were great, and the cold beer just made everything better. Would definitely come back with a bigger appetite!

Utsunomiya Gyoza-Kai Kirasse Store is a must-visit for any gyoza lover! Inside the building, there are 5 different gyoza restaurants to choose from, and the great thing is there are actually 2 Kirasse stores here. You can enjoy a variety of delicious gyoza at very affordable prices. I tried 6–7 kinds and each one felt better than the last. My favorites were the Okonomiyaki Gyoza (really good), Gyu Gyoza (really good), Yaki Gyoza (great taste), Banetaki Gyoza (great), and Ude Gyoza (great). The Aoshiso Gyoza was good, and the Suigyoza was not bad either. A fun and tasty experience — highly recommended!

Tochigi Science Museum, situated in Utsunomiya City, Tochigi Prefecture, is an educational hub featuring hands-on exhibits, live shows, and a planetarium. The museum's exhibition hall is divided into six areas with the theme 'Science All Around You,' offering interactive experiences for children to learn about science through seeing and touching. While some activities were affected by COVID-19 restrictions, the museum continues to refresh its offerings with different events.
Excellent place to bring your kids or anyone really, to learn about science and the universe. Unfortunately all the signs are in Japanese but many of the experiments to try are obvious if you have basic knowledge. Admission is very reasonable too, and there's an outside park to run and play in once you've learned enough inside!

Good place for kids. Both of my sons enjoyed a lot...!!! To enjoyed fully, it needs about 3 hours...! There is entrance fee, for adults 550 jpy person and for kids 220 jpy. There are very big sliders outside...!!!

Fun spot for the kids. Keep in mind everything is in Japanese if you're a foreigner. Lots of hands in exhibits, and you can walk to a bike and train park for the kids.
Dave A — Google review
During the renovation the website said the park playgrounds would be open. I brought my two children by train only to find out all of the surrounding parks were closed and locked. This was non holiday, regular hours. I couldn’t even call anyone or talk to a staff member on the grounds

It was amusing, demonstrates practically basics of science. Imagine how best you can explain a2+b2=c2, how black body keeps heat, how dynamo generates electricity, planes rockets, how to join bones to make up whole skeleton etc. I wonder school time can be more interesting for kids after visit to this musuem.

Exhibitions in science museum are very impressive. Renewable energy, such as solar, wind and so on, are used to move game like equipment. Also, kids loved slides and jungle gyms at outside playground on a hill.

This is a super fun place - I can't imagine how great it must be when there's no need to worry about COVID-19. A lot of activities were unavailable because of COVID-19 - like the forced perspective rooms 😢 It is old and some things are dated, but even so they're trying to keep things fresh with different events, and the dated feel of it adds to its charm too. This is best for kids in kindergarten and early elementary.

The museum is quite old and a lot of the activities were either closed or not working but the kids will still like it. This place is probably best for kids aged 5+. My kids were too young to really understand anything.

The history zone provides a comprehensive introduction to Tochigi's history, from ancient times to the present. The museum is particularly noteworthy for its dinosaur skeletons, which are not found in Tochigi, but the numerous exhibits, spanning prehistoric, Kofun, medieval, and early modern periods, are accompanied by detailed explanations, making it a truly fascinating experience. The natural history exhibits are a spectacular sight, with numerous specimens of plants, animals, minerals, birds, insects, and more. The special exhibition "Unusual Colors and Shapes" was also being held on the day, and it was fascinating to see the many rare folk artifacts on display, including a statue of a secret god that is not usually shown to the public. The sheer volume and depth of the exhibits would have taken hours to explore. Please note that there are areas within the museum where photography is permitted and areas where it is prohibited. Farm
The Four Seasons Bamboo Forest Wakayama Farm is a must-visit destination, known for its sprawling bamboo forest that has been featured in movies and TV commercials. It's the largest bamboo farm in Japan, boasting over 10,000 bamboos of about a dozen different varieties. Visitors can take leisurely walks through beautiful paths adorned with various bamboo-crafted pieces and even enjoy activities like chestnut picking in September.
Who knew a sudden plan could turn into a super-duper camping experience! Lately, I had been buried in work and desperately needed to get outdoors. My wife was also feeling down because I hadn’t been home much. We had been planning a mountain hike, but that idea fell through due to the rainy season. 😰 Luckily, while doing a quick search on Google Maps, we stumbled upon Wakayama Bamboo Farm—and to our surprise, they offered hammock tent camping right in the middle of a bamboo forest! This discovery happened around 9 in the morning, and we decided to call them on the spot. To our delight, they said we could reserve for the same day—even though that’s usually not allowed! Their kindness and flexibility already made the experience feel special. When we arrived, the staff were incredibly welcoming. They guided us through everything, and the best part? You can rent all the gear, so there’s nothing to worry about. By around 3 PM, we were already under the tent, resting peacefully among the bamboo trees. Even though it was raining, the experience felt absolutely magical. Sleeping in a hammock tent surrounded by tall bamboo, with the gentle sound of rain… it was like something out of a dream. The entire bamboo park is open for you to explore freely, and at night, the forest is beautifully illuminated. Best of all, it wasn’t crowded at all—it felt like we had the whole place to ourselves. The next morning, we explored the peaceful, human-less park once again. My wife was so happy that she could take plenty of photos and roam around freely without any crowds. It was the perfect reset for both of us. Surely, we will go there again on a sunny day to experience this magical place all over again—this time in a different light! Highly recommend❤️❤️❤️ this place for anyone looking for a peaceful, unique, and unforgettable escape in nature—even on a rainy day!

The Bamboo Museum is a small but charming stop with free entry. Inside, you can admire beautifully crafted handmade bamboo bags and other delicate bamboo items — each piece showing amazing skill and tradition. To actually enter the Bamboo Park itself, you need to buy a separate ticket, but even just the museum is a pleasant visit. A lovely spot for anyone who enjoys Japanese craftsmanship and unique finds!”

Extraordinary beauty without the crazy crowds of other bamboo forests. It was peaceful and tranquil. Had such a wonderful half day experience. Aesthetically pleasing landscape design with lots of surprise sculptural elements (they do an amazing night light garden). Began with lunch and dessert at the cafe. The set meals were delicious! Then purchased our entry tickets and explored the extensive estate. Felt happily lost in the bamboo groves. My child also really enjoyed the swing and netting walkway which were suspended in the trees. Great toilets and parking too.

A pleasant walk in a bamboo forest! Wasn't busy and the staff were helpful. The place has free parking and a few cafes, some swings and a small shop/museum. Sadly both cafes were closed when we visited, but as a tourist looking for a bamboo forest that wasn't overly packed like the one in Kyoto. It did everything I wanted. A relaxing spot worth visiting!
Conor M — Google review
I visited on a weekday afternoon, and it wasn’t crowded at all. Every corner of this place looks like a postcard — it’s incredibly beautiful. There are several types of bamboo here, each with different colors and textures, which makes the scenery even more interesting. Some international visitors even said it’s much better than the crowded spots in Kyoto — a true hidden gem. The farm milk soft-serve ice cream I had at the small tea shop was also absolutely delicious. There’s something I think future visitors should know. I visited with a friend to take my maternity photos. My friend politely asked for photo permission at the entrance, but we were charged an ¥8,000 photography fee for just 1 hour and 20 minutes. He brought his professional-looking camera — he’s not a professional photographer, and there was no money exchanged between us. Most other visitors around us were also taking photos freely, and none of them seemed to be paying any photography fee. When we asked the staff about the difference, they said there was no clear rule or boundary. I could understand the charge if it were for commercial shoots like TV or magazine features, but ours was just a personal memory shoot. It felt very unfair. It’s such a beautiful place, which made this experience even more disappointing. I truly hope this policy will be improved, so I’m giving two stars.
KOKO O — Google review
Arashiyama in Kyoto, eat your heart out. This bamboo forest is larger, far less crowded, and pristine. You can wonder at the different varieties of bamboo as you wander around. There are hammocks in the middle of the bamboo groves, and match tea with chestnut sweets. We enjoyed tea under a tent in the rain and it was very tranquil and meditative. There are playgrounds for the kids, and on summer evenings they have lights through the groves. There are different kinds of bamboo, as well as cultivating chestnuts. There's a small museum with bamboo craft as well. Free carpark, toilets, shop, cafe. Highly worth it if you like the asthetics of bambool
Douglas A — Google review
Such a peaceful and breathtaking place! The vast bamboo forest feels like stepping into another world, with endless tall bamboo swaying gently in the breeze. Surrounded by the stunning Nikko mountains, the natural beauty here is simply mesmerizing. Walking the well-maintained paths, hearing the rustle of leaves and the soft sway of bamboo, I felt completely calm and connected to nature. The forest is a true hidden gem, perfect for anyone seeking tranquility and the magic of beautiful, pristine nature.
Tony R — Google review
Nice trip and time to spend in nature. If you wait 17.00 you will enjoy night illuminations. I advise you going to the shop after visiting the bamboo area; maybe you will find a nice lamp to buy made by bamboo.

Heiwa Kannon, also known as the Goddess of Peace, is a monumental 27-meter-tall statue of the Kannon Bodhisattva located at the former Oya Stone mining site. Carved by hand over six years starting in 1948, it stands as a symbol of peace and remembrance for those who perished in World War II. Visitors can ascend to an observation deck within the statue for panoramic views of Utsunomiya and its surroundings.
The Heiwa Kannon in Ōya is a breathtaking symbol of peace and compassion, standing tall amidst the dramatic stone landscape that defines the region. Carved from the local Ōya stone, this massive 27-meter statue was completed in 1956 to commemorate peace after World War II and has since become one of Utsunomiya’s most iconic landmarks. The serene expression of the Kannon, set against the rugged quarry walls and surrounding greenery, creates a powerful and tranquil atmosphere. Visitors can climb a nearby observation point for a beautiful panoramic view of the valley and the statue’s gentle form rising above the stone cliffs.

The rock craved Kannon 観音 is erected in small park (located in a former mine). The park open to public and there is no entrance fee. You can walk up to the shoulder of the Kannon via stairs on the side. It is not that tall. The park itself is small and one can see the rock formation left from the abandoning mine. There is a free parking outside and it only takes 2 mins to walk from there.

The museum is situated near a beautiful park. I’ve visited this museum several times to see special exhibitions....which have been absolutely wonderful, excellent and exciting. Their permanent collection is weak and boring. However, there are 2 René Magritte paintings🍏, which are my favorite, some beautiful Japanese photographs but that’s all, really. The good thing is... there’s never a crowd. Very few people, always. Anyway, the museum itself is grand and beautiful...beautiful Oya stone and super clean ✨Love the outdoor sculptures. The Former Shinohara Family Residence is a historic building in Utsunomiya City, Tochigi Prefecture, and is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. The Shinohara family ran a soy sauce brewery and fertilizer business from the late Edo period, and were known as one of the prefecture's leading merchants during the Meiji period. The remaining main house (which doubles as a storehouse) and new storehouse were built in 1895 (Meiji 28). The main house is a two-story earthen storehouse, and is notable for the use of Oya stone, a specialty of Utsunomiya, in part of the exterior walls. In 2000 (Heisei 12), the main house and new storehouse were designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan. The library storehouse, built in 1851 (Kaei 4), also has cultural value. (Translated by Google) I went to see the special exhibition, "Dear Friend Vincent Van Gogh." I went around 2pm on a Saturday, but the main parking lot was full, so I was directed to a temporary parking lot. As it was a Saturday afternoon, the museum was very crowded, with crowds of people gathered in front of the artwork. The special exhibition and the collection exhibition are in separate buildings, but you can also view the collection exhibition for the special exhibition fee. The special exhibition building is tall and made of glass, but the exhibition venue is on the first floor. The collection exhibition venue is on the first and second floors. The Van Gogh exhibition does not feature any original works, but it does feature moving artworks created using digital fine art. I was able to see many never-before-seen works on video, and it was very fascinating to be able to experience moving artworks from Van Gogh's perspective as we would have seen them. At the collection exhibition, I was very moved to be able to see Alfred Sisley's "Winter Sunset (The Seine at Saint-Mamès)," which I acquired in 2023, together with works by Turner and Constable, two artists I admire. Such a bad public communication strategy here. Social media shows it’s open and once you arrive, it’s totally closed. They close on Mondays not Sat or Sun. I don’t think I’ll ever come back.

I was able to park where one car had just left, but the next person couldn't get in, and I saw many cars circling around in slow-moving traffic. I was impressed by the "Moving Van Gogh" exhibition this time, but that doesn't reflect my review of the museum itself, so I'll leave that out. If the parking lot was properly maintained, I'd like to visit again on another occasion. As someone who lives in a neighboring local government, I'm deeply impressed by the fact that this event has continued for 79 years. I took my time to appreciate each piece, each one a unique masterpiece, painstakingly crafted, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Fine Arts indeed! There were several pieces I wanted. "MEISSEN"... The Naoko Ito Meissen Porcelain Collection was also bailey good! It was great. By the way, this was my first time visiting this museum, and I think it's well-designed. This time... The Game Center charges double on new items, the layout is awkward, it’s not suited for large crowds so avoid weekends and holidays. The akachan honpo is a get size and good staff. There are good baby rooms and elevators. You can find good street clothes and character items

It's a good sized shopping mall with pretty much everything you'd need for a morning or afternoon out shopping. Lots of choices of where to eat too! There's a regular bus from Utsunomiya Station and I think it also goes to the Mashiko pottery area on its route too. A few stores have changed since 2021, such as a new kids adventure group club is now on the second floor.

Good place to get your day to day shopping done. Very crowded on the weekends with families and middle school students. The food court has pretty good selections. The movie theater is across the street (with a access bridge).

It's a great one place shopping mall. It got everything you need like grocery, daily necessities (100yen shops), clothes, 1000yen barber, cinema, even phone and sim cards. It got good restaurants and a lot of non-pork meal. Parking spots are plenty although sometimes they're not enough on the weekends. You can also take bus to and from Utsunomiya station.

The site also produces its own beer and collaborates with various companies for unique products.
Loved the staff, the room, peaceful scenery, the bread and vegetables at the market, and of course the Onsen. We bought the package with the all you can drink for 90 Minutes, including a dinner set and a Breakfast set the next morning. It was well worth it. The shop by the front desk also was worth stopping by. I bought some sandals, handbags for shopping and a bunch of Japanese comfortable socks.

I like this amusement park. Child friendly staff. Easy to access. The rides are all safe for the children. If you go by train you can exercise by atleast 10mins.walk from the train station. It has also a lot of parking lots. Must be visit.

Cute, clean and well-kept Amusement park. I came for the Jet Coaster, and to my surprise, the train was modelled as a Shinkansen! Amazing find. Rides are quite cheap and you buy the ride tickets from the vending machines. Staff are all friendly and even though I don't speak Japanese, they really try and communicate, which is lovely. Toilets were clean - no hand soap though! It's free to get in, and there is a car park located right next to the park! It's located right next to the stadium so I'm guessing ot gets crowded on event days and the parking probably fills up too!

I thought this place was super cute. Free entry into the park. You buy tickets to ride the rides individually. Lots of great tables to have a break or a picnic lunch. We went in the beginning of September and they still had misting stations out to cool down under. Parking is free for up to 2 hours and then it's only 500yen for the day. Baby room has two changing tables and a nursing corner that has a privacy curtain. Good variety of rides even for little tiny kids.

This enchanting temple offers visitors an opportunity to embark on the Saigoku 33 Kannon Pilgrimage, while also showcasing a vibrant collection of Arhats. Unlike other tourist temples, Shounji exudes authenticity and is frequented by locals. Its unpolished charm adds a unique touch to the overall experience.

The weeping cherry tree, which is over 350 years old, is famous as a prefectural natural monument, and the 33rd Kannon statue in Saigoku is enshrined within the vast grounds of over 50,000 square meters. I will transcribe some of the information boards I took. On the day of my visit, April 6, 2024, the weather was bad, so I was only able to visit a few places, but if I had time, I would like to take a closer look at all 33 places. ●Shounji Kannon sacred place Saigoku Sanjusan Kannon Reisho was opened in the Heian period by Tokudo Shonin and Pope Hanayama, and has been a place of worship for people around the world for over 1,000 years. The sacred place of this temple was built with the faith of many people at the request of the 27th head priest of this temple, Hiroyuki Nukiyama, who was a devout believer in Kannon. Under each statue, soil from each sacred site that has been visited is stored in a jar. The flowers surrounding the statue were donated by believers. Each Kannon statue is enshrined in a well-maintained environment based on the impression and atmosphere of the temple in which it resides. We hope that you will remember this sacred place in the distant Saigoku region, and that after visiting this sacred place, as many people as possible will decide to make a pilgrimage to the Saigoku region. ●No. 1 Nachisan Seigantoji Temple Principal image Nyoikon Seon Bodhisattva Mt. Nachi, one of the three Kumano mountains, is located at the southern end of the Kii Peninsula near Shio Cape, where the Kuroshio Current flows, and the entire mountain is covered in a lush virgin forest. Seigantoji Temple is located along with Nachi Gongen, and from the grounds you can see Nachi Falls, the highest spiritual waterfall in Japan. According to a temple legend, a nude hermit from India washed ashore here and found an eight-inch statue in the basin of Ichi-no-taki. Later, during the reign of Emperor Suiko, Ibutsu Shonin created a statue of Nyoirin Kannon based on a dream, and placed the statue inside and made it the principal image. Mt. Nachi is said to be the east gate of Mt. Fudaraku, the Pure Land of the Bodhisattva Kanzeon, and has been a place of worship since ancient times, and the legend of the crossing of Fudaraku remains. hymn The scenery of the Fudarakuya is a fox that echoes in Mikuma's Nachinoyama. ●No. 25 Banshu Kiyomizu Temple Principal image: Eleven-faced Thousand-Armed Kanzeon Bodhisattva It is said that it was founded by the legendary Indian monk Hodo Sennin during the Taika period, and later, in the 2nd year of Jinki (725 AD), Gyoki Bodhisattva established the Thousand-Armed, Thousand-Eyed Kanzeon Bodhisattva. Although it is located in an inland mountainous area of Hyogo Prefecture and has poor transportation, it has long been famous as a sacred place for Kannon and attracted the faith of noble men such as Sakanoue Tamuramaro. It is said that Eisai Zenji also came to live there. Located on the top of the mountain about 2km from the foot of the mountain, there is a clear spring near the main temple, from which the name Kiyomizu was given. hymn Aremiya What's this beautiful water here? ●No. 26 Ichijoji Temple Principal image: Sho Kanzeon Bodhisattva This temple in Kasai City, Hyogo Prefecture is surrounded by hills that can be compared to an eight-leafed lotus flower, and is located in a quiet forest that makes you feel like you are in another world. The Kaikihodo hermit lived in this area and used his divine powers to send out treasure bowls to receive offerings. During the Taika era, a pot was thrown at a ship loaded with taxed rice while it was sailing at sea, and the ship's owner refused the request to donate rice as a memorial service. Then, as the empty bowl flew back, the rice bags followed like wild geese. The shipowner hurriedly went to the hermit, apologized, and asked for all the rice bags to be returned. It is said that this temple was later built by an imperial order to pray for Emperor Kotoku's recovery from his illness. hymn Haruha Hana, Summer, Tachibana, Akihakiku, Always Taehana, Nori no Hanayama ●No. 30 Chikubu Island Principal image: Thousand-armed, thousand-eyed Kanzeon Bodhisattva Chikubujima is an island floating in the middle of Lake Biwa near the northern tip. This area is the deepest part of the lake, surrounded by steep cliffs, and the island's shadow is reflected on the deep blue surface of the lake, which is said to be ``a scene where the shadows of green trees sink and the fish climb into the trees.'' There are Tsukubusuma Shrine and Hogonji Temple on the island, and it began as a Buddhist temple in the Jinki era (Nara period) when Gyoki Bosatsu first enshrined a statue of Daibenzai Tennyo and then Senju Kannon. The current Kannon statue was built during the Kamakura period. It is said that the Ugaya Benzaiten of Shounji Temple was solicited from Chikubu Island. hymn Tsukimo string Nami ni Ukabu Chikubushima Let's gather the treasure in the boat ●Extra: Kazanin Principal image: Yakushi Nyorai The name of the temple is Bodai-in, and it is said to be the place where the retired Emperor Kazan (Homyo Nyokaku) lived in seclusion. It is said that it was founded by Hodō Sennin during the Taika era, and Kobo Daishi also trained here. The empress and ladies-in-waiting who remained in the capital, admiring the retired Emperor Hanayama, asked him about it, but the Emperor did not allow women to approach the top of the mountain, so the wives built a hermitage at the foot of the mountain and lived there. Seiganji, the sole iron pagoda in Japan, was constructed by Sadatsuna Utsunomiya during the Kamakura period. Positioned near the entrance within a storage area, it remains accessible to visitors with an unlocked door and a sign guiding them to enter and switch on the light. Protected by glass enclosure and air-conditioning for preservation purposes, this remarkable structure cannot be physically touched but can be observed closely. Nestled on a gentle hill, the Utsunomiya Castle Ruins offer a delightful blend of history and natural beauty. Originally established in 1063 by the influential Fujiwara Clan during the Heian period, this site has undergone various renovations throughout its existence, particularly in the Edo period. The castle features an earthwork structure that reflects traditional Japanese architectural styles. Visitors can enjoy leisurely walks through its expansive grounds, which are especially stunning when cherry blossoms bloom in spring.
Cool for what it is! Awesome that the city kept the ruins around. Smaller than expected but in a sense, it’s a nice treat before going to get dinner. Highly recommend it if you’re in this part of Utsunomiya. 15-20 minutes is all you need to check this spot out. At night it’s pretty cool since the spotlights make the ruins a bit more dramatic.
Michael S — Google review
The Inner Citadel of Utsunomiya Castle is the core of the historic fortress, once the seat of power for the Utsunomiya clan and later an important stronghold under the Tokugawa shogunate. Though much of the original castle was lost during wars and modernization, the area has been carefully reconstructed, giving visitors a sense of the scale and authority the citadel once held. Walking through the broad earthen ramparts, massive stone walls, and reconstructed yagura towers, you can imagine how formidable this castle must have been. The citadel controlled key routes to Nikkō and northern Japan, making it a strategic hub for centuries. Today, the grounds feel peaceful, with open spaces, moats, and historical displays that contrast sharply with the turbulent history they once witnessed.

More of a park than a ‘castle ruins’. Interesting if you’re in to castle ruins and history. Interesting nooks and crannies to check out. Parking at the municipal city was free, though you just need to take a ticket when going in and then return it when going out.

About 20 to 25 mins walk from Utsunomiya JR Station. Quite a pleasant walk along the river. Nothing much to see at the park actually. The castle structure is a rebuild, not original. Can visit the small museum which has a nice diorama showing the old Utsunomiya castle. There s a Yakult cafe nearby, but nothing special.

Actually, I don’t even want to give them a star. I’ve brought some friends with me as a part of my birthday celebration. There were 2 open air baths for women so we tried them. The one with what they call “wine bath” was dangerous because you can’t see the stair going down to it. I stumbled, my friend stumbled and as we were bathing, more guests stumbled too. So, when we were paying out, I told the staff about what happened at the bath and advised him that they should do something about it because it’s dangerous. I was expecting an apology but to my dismay, he added more insult to the injury. He said, “it was written somewhere maybe you guys didn’t understood!”The guts!!! So, what happened to those Japanese who also stumbled? They also didn’t understand the said warning signs? Honestly, there wasn’t anything written. The only written thing I had read was about the depth of the water which says…. That part is deep and the other part is shallow. There wasn’t anything written about the stairs going down the bath? This staff should better be trained how to treat guests. I wish that the owner and manager could read this and do something about the said staff’s attitude. This happened today, April 14,2024. FYI, I’m a foreigner yes, but had been living here for more than 36 years and hate to say that I was very embarrassed of this unfriendly staff of yours. Maybe, you should include English translations on your warning signs so we,”foreign guest's”….. who in a way help you with your business could understand them too😂 フロントのお仕事やるなら、お客の気持ちも分かって下さい。事故ったらもう遅いでしょう?まぁ、二度と行かないけどね。もちろんお友達たちにもおすすめできませんね。

I gave up taking bath here, because of their non-sense rules. My son is 1year old uses a baby diaper. They prohibit babies who use diaper from bathing hot spring. It's totally no make sense to me. (Translated by Google) A shrine dedicated to a scholar from the Edo period who was born in Utsunomiya City. This shrine is dedicated to Kimihei Gamo, a late Edo period scholar, and is known locally as the god of learning. The shrine was founded in 1930. In addition, a stone statue of Akashi Shiganosuke, the first Yokozuna, is from this area, so a stone statue is placed in the precincts. There will also be a youth sumo tournament where all the naughty sumo wrestlers from around the prefecture will gather. The precincts have an idyllic atmosphere and are calm. The laid-back, unpretentious atmosphere of the countryside is comfortable. Kimpei Gamo researched imperial tombs and ancient tombs across the country and wrote ``Sanryōshi,'' and was the first to use the figurative name ``keyhole-shaped tumulus.'' Kimihei Gamo's ancestor is said to be Ujisato Gamo, the lord of the Aizu domain. In front of the torii gate stands a pillar with a hole. It is said that you will pass if you pass a pen, pencil, brush, etc. through the hole in one shot. This shrine is visited by a large number of worshipers who come to pray for passing the exam. Since there is no parking lot, I parked in the parking lot of the prefectural office and visited the shrine. The Utsunomiya archaeological museum is a fascinating historical site featuring reconstructions of dwellings and artifacts from over 2000 years ago. While some buildings are closed to the public, one can explore the inside of one of the larger structures. Set amidst natural surroundings, including plants, animals, insects, flowers, and trees, this small museum is located adjacent to a cemetery and offers its own car park area. A visit to this site promises an intriguing experience as the seasons change.
It's a wonderful small historical site that has reconstructions of dwellings and features from over 2000 years ago. You may go inside one of the larger buildings but the others are closed which is ok. I came in September and there were many interesting natural things around the site too such as plants, animals, insects, flowers and trees. Its located next to the cemetery and has its own small car park area. I think it will be an interesting place to visit as the seasons change.

The path up is narrow, and there are places along the way where you can climb up the wall by relying on chains and a few footholds dug into the rock wall, and if you are not careful, you will fall down the cliff. It's better to assume that you won't be able to climb on rainy days. People in the past often thought of climbing on this rock. Kannon is standing on a large rock on top of the mountain, staring at Mt. Buko. It takes about 25 minutes by car from Tobiyama Castle to Katsuyama Castle, and about 20 minutes by car from Tobiyama Castle to Utsunomiya Castle. It is possible to siege three castles in one day. The following is from wikipedia Tobiyama Castle is a flat mountain castle built on a rectangular territory measuring 240 meters from east to west and 420 meters from north to south, using the terraces on the east bank of the Kinugawa River. The ruins that remain today extend over a vast area of about 14 hectares, and are solidly built, surrounded by cliffs along the Kinugawa River and its tributaries (25 meters in relative height) on the north and west sides, and double earthworks and a dry moat on the east and south sides. The inner dry moat preserves the remains of a large structure measuring 15 meters wide and 4 meters deep. The castle is made up of seven curves. There is a main enclosure in the northwest, which is divided into five sections by a dry moat. There was one kuruwa on the south side, and a long and narrow kuruwa surrounding these kuruwa on the east and south sides, and five turret platforms were placed along the outer moat. Each kuruwa is surrounded by earthworks and a moat, and it is thought that the castle lord's residence was located in the northernmost small kuruwa. This is quite a basic campsite and barbecue area, however there's a lot of space and it's a great atmosphere when everyone's cooking, playing games and having fun. The river is immediately next to the camp area and ideal for fish to cook. Parking is easy, but it's really not ideal at all to try and get here by bus. You'll need one that uses Route 123 if you do. The Utsunomiya Civic Plaza, also known as the Utsunomiya Fairy Museum, is an enchanting museum dedicated to fairies. Nestled within the city of Utsunomiya, this atmospheric building captivates visitors with its unique theme. The museum not only showcases exhibits on fairies but also houses a vast collection of books on myths and folklore from around the world.
I liked it! The fairies live in the cabinet.

There are many cute things, Admission is free, so if you're a fairy lover, we highly recommend you give it a visit. When I walked up from the foot of the mountain, the sun was about to set, so I climbed up the mountain road, which is about 4m high and difficult to pass each other, praying that there would be no oncoming cars. There are several places along the way where you can wait, so you should just take your time. That's right😅 When I climbed the stone steps from the parking lot at the top of the mountain and arrived at the shrine, I felt a different atmosphere. The parking lot for passenger cars is a little small, but it seems that you can park large cars up to the size of a microbus! (Are you coming that way?) ...Well, you have to go up a long flight of stairs from the parking lot, but if you take a leisurely walk while admiring the magnificent cedar trees and flowers beneath your feet, you'll probably find that it's not that difficult. The slope is not steep either. As soon as you reach the top, you can see the company directly in front of you. Gyoza Street is a food-and-dumpling-themed stretch in the centre of Utsunomiya (on Miyajimacho-dori) that brings together multiple well-known gyoza shops—e.g. Minmin, Masashi, Goku, Butakaki, etc. It’s not an entire boulevard lined only with gyoza joints, but enough density of specialty shops + lots of visual gyoza motifs (dumpling-shaped lanterns, manhole covers, signs, “gyoza monuments”) to make it a destination for people who love gyoza.

A bit of a hidden secret, this place. Well worth a visit. It has a big collection of stuffed birds and some animals from Japan and other countries. All in excellent condition and well displayed. You can also see hundreds of butterflies, beetles and fossils. The curator was very friendly and helpful. Although the exhibits had the names in English all other information was in Japanese only.

The curator personally gave us a detailed explanation, and we listened to a lot of stories about wild birds and stuffed animals. Historical landmark
Nestled in Utsunomiya City, Tochigi Prefecture, the Mikurayama Kofun is a fascinating historical site that often goes unnoticed by passersby. To reach this ancient burial mound, visitors must ascend a steep set of stairs located to the left at the tunnel entrance. Along with the tumulus itself, you’ll also discover Raijinja Shrine nearby, making it a perfect spot for those who enjoy exploring hidden gems while immersing themselves in Japan's rich history.
(Translated by Google) Mikurayama Tumulus 5-1 Hanawata, Utsunomiya City, Tochigi Prefecture 320-0027 At the tunnel entrance, if you go up the steep stairs on the left, it says that you will find Mikurayama Tumulus and Raijinja Shrine, but unless you are walking around, you will probably not notice it. The trajectory of Utsunomiya Mikurayama Tumulus [Utsunomiya City designated cultural property] (Designated on March 21, 1997) This tumulus is a medium-sized keyhole-shaped tomb built around the first half of the 6th century with a total length of about 62 m and a height of about 5 m, with the front facing west-northwest. Fragments of pottery and clay figurines have been excavated from the surrounding area. The burial mound has three levels, the lower half of which was shaped by cutting down the mountain, and the upper half of which was built by mounding up the earth. There is a ``Kokanki'' at the foot of the tumulus, and ``Rai Shrine'' at the top. When the shrine was built, the tops of the front and rear circles were removed by about 1m.
