Shibu Onsen is a charming hot spring town with a rich history and fascinating legends. The Daija Festival in nearby Shiga Kogen commemorates the tale of a serpent in Onuma Pond, adding to the area's mystical allure. The back alleys of Shibu Onsen are filled with nostalgic charm, offering an array of discoveries from hot springs to Showa-era souvenir shops. Visitors can also enjoy collecting stamps from public baths, immersing themselves in the city's vibrant atmosphere.

I can't stop being excited Actually, there are hot springs inside the inn, but why not go out and visit the hot springs in the back alleys and main passages? Huh? why~? That's what I thought... Back alleys are interesting! Shooting targets and souvenir shops have a Showa atmosphere! Steam is coming from everywhere! This is a hot spring town!! ️ I'm enjoying this, yeah ❣️ I want to repeat it I want to take a walk in a yukata yeah? ! There was no costume rental shop. (Translated by Google) Although the atmosphere of the retro hot spring town is very nice, the customer service at the restaurants is terrible. The expression of the village is very nice traditional Japanese hot spring village but the most restaurant in that village is terrible. We do not recommend staying in this hot spring town unless you have a meal plan. In particular, we do not recommend staying at accommodations where you drive by car, do not have meals, or do not have a parking lot (you must use a municipal parking lot). There are no decent restaurants in the hot spring town. Not only are there very few stores open, but families with children are often refused entry or kicked out. Also, you can't get your car in or out of the municipal parking lot from 7pm to 7am, so you can't go to the next town for dinner. I visited this hot spring town with my children, and I just regretted coming to this hot spring town, and it ruined the trip I was looking forward to. You can only use the outdoor baths until 10pm. Although the hot spring town has great potential, it is a shame that there are many restaurants run by elderly people who are closed off and rude. Not recommend to stay hotel without dinner plan. There is no nice restaurants especially with kids. You even get kicked out from some restaurants if you are with kids. And public parking , you can’t get your car in and out at all from 7pm to 7am to go other town to eat. I just regretted to even went there with kids. That town ruined our entire trip that I was looking forwarded to. (Translated by Google) Be warned, if your hotel doesn't have a private onsen, be aware that the much-advertised "Nine Onsen Road" is actually just a string of dilapidated public baths. I think I would have made a different reservation or wouldn't have gone through Yudanaka at all if I had known what the place was really like. If you want to see monkeys, they are only present, or mainly so, in winter when it's very cold and they want to warm up in the onsen. For restaurants, plan ahead as they fill up very quickly. The village has charm, but there are many ruins on the main street. You can sense that something is starting to happen, but it doesn't quite live up to its reputation.

National park
Shiga Kogen, also known as the Shiga Highlands, is a renowned collection of ski resorts in Japan. It was the site of various sports during the 1998 Nagano Olympics and boasts 71 lifts. The area offers some of the best snow quality in Japan, with light and dry powder that makes it a paradise for skiing enthusiasts. Additionally, visitors can experience small-town Japanese culture and catch a glimpse of Olympic history while exploring this winter wonderland.
Fantastic ski area. 3 major ski areas are interconnected, central Shiga kogen ski area, Yakebitaiyama area and Okushhiga. If you do not know the way back, go to the base and catch a free bus back. Excellent natural snow conditions. Varied runs from each ski area. There is lunch available for purchase in almost every resort.
Martin N — Google review
Good amount of ski slopes and good snow across the whole mountain range/resorts, but very crowded still and some lifts are very slow. Also very annoying that most of the ski slopes aren't connected even though the map makes it seem that way. Yokoteyma had an amazing view though, best I've ever seen. However, snowboard/ski wise, not enough variety in the runs across the resorts to get 5/5.
Zayd — Google review
Shiga Kogen is an absolutely beautiful ski resort, especially when covered in soft, powdery snow. The scenery is breathtaking, and the vast expanse of the resort makes it a fantastic place for skiing and snowboarding. There are plenty of ski lifts to get you up the mountains, and I was pleasantly surprised that the lift lines weren’t long, even on a busy day. One of the best parts about Shiga Kogen is the convenience—there are plenty of spots to grab food and drinks, as well as rest areas to take a break and warm up. Maps are also posted throughout the resort, which makes it easy to navigate and find your way. The only downside is that the mountains aren’t as seamlessly connected as I’d hoped. After some runs, you may need to stop, unbuckle, and traverse to another area, which can break up the flow of skiing or snowboarding. Overall, though, Shiga Kogen is an amazing place to experience Japan’s winter beauty, with great snow, plenty of lifts, and all the amenities you’d need for a fantastic day on the slopes.
Mario S — Google review
People may hate me but I have very mixed feelings about the ski resort. The snow can be great in Japan so that is the one big reason to go. But the resort can be difficult to navigate, it is really a collection of a bunch of small resorts, so you have a lot of traverses and areas were you have to walk. Manny runs are short and lifts are generally very old. If you are not staying up at the resort the transportation to Nagano water a lot of time and can be frustrating. On mountain good was not exceptional, much better food in the cities
Tim C — Google review
My husband's bucket list to snowboard in Nagano. Tovisit the biggest ski area with so many resorts was huge. He had the most amazing time.
Lynda — Google review
The most important information had learned was that the free shuttle between the stops was slow and infrequent. I would recommend avoiding taking them if possible. That means, avoid skiing down a different trail than where you had started and ended up far away. Check your map before going down the trail. The resort is HUGE! There are so many different "resorts" in a single area, and there are even more resorts in other areas. But you could just stay in one area and that's enough. We began at the Yamanoeki Bus Stop, where the Alpina Sports Ski Rental Office and coin lockers were located. You can also park your car next to the building. We caught the bus the first day and drove the next. Right next to the building is a gondola that takes you to the skiing area. We spent most of our time on gondola/lifts 15, 16, 34, and 33, and that was more than enough to fill the whole day. There's a cafe stand and a dining room on top of the mountain if you need some food. The dining room is good for a quick bite. We saw monkeys here running around and jumping on top of hotel awnings, and even on top of people's cars. The hotel workers obviously despised the monkeys. They would throw snow and even point the snow blowers at them to try to scare them away. They tried to tell me why, but the language barrier prevented me from fully understanding. However, it's clear that they are considered a nuisance. Shiga Kogen is a great place for novice skiers. There are many long, green trails perfect for practicing and having fun. We stuck to the green trails the entire time, and we never got bored. It’s also really accessible from Tokyo, and both the lift ticket and ski rental prices were really great. The only downside is that we went in March when there wasn’t much powder left. We plan to go back in January next time for a more powdery experience.
Janet H — Google review
Shiga Kogen area is a great place to ski as it is mostly connected to the other ski areas (save for a few which required bus transfer to) so there is less scope to get bored with skiing the same runs, good mix or green, red & black slopes, plenty of lunch food options outside of the Prince ski area. Relatively quiet with few lift queues, and close to snow (onsen) monkey park One minor gripe is there are quite a few areas where you need to walk up gradients to get to ski lifts or neighbouring ski areas One major detraction is the lack of any sort of night life once the skiing has finished for the day, with not many restaurants choices connected by the local shuttle

Snow Monkey Park (Jigokudani Yaen Koen) is a secluded park in Nagano, offering an up-close experience with Japanese Macaques, also known as Snow Monkeys. Visitors can take a scenic walk to reach the park and witness these wild monkeys bathing in a natural hot spring. The park is located in the Jigokudani valley near Shibu and Yudanaka onsen towns.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Stow Monkey Park is such a wonderful experience! The walk up to the park is beautiful — a shaded path along a peaceful stream surrounded by tall trees, which makes the journey as enjoyable as the destination. The entrance fee is very reasonable at just 800 yen. The park is well maintained, with public restroom and a free drinking water machine available, plus a nice little gift shop. Watching the monkeys up close in their natural setting was absolutely incredible — truly an unforgettable experience. Highly recommend!
Olga L — Google review
Came here because of samsara! Knew it would be a magical place and it truly was. Forewarning, you can't guarantee that you'll see any monkeys. I got there and was told only 1 monkey is out. Got there and spent 15mins looking for him, to find he was hiding behind me and not in the bath! Lol Even without the monkeys it's a lovely spot with stunning views and really nice warm water! If you have any disabilities or struggle walking I'd reconsider. My old man has COPD and struggled to get there (we parked in the car park) otherwise it's just a good climb of stairs. Not much else there, I believe there used to be a restaurant and hotel. But looks closed down. Parking was cheap. Plenty of spots.
Conor M — Google review
Second visit to park, both in November but many years apart........first time the monkeys did not come down from the mountain - mating season we were told !!! The visit of 17th November 2025 was especially enjoyable with a very large number of monkeys roaming around in the park and using the hot pool. It was particularly fortunate to be with the monkeys considering they had been absent from the park for several days before our visit. The 30 minute easy walk through the forest to the park was also a memorable experience. Anyone visiting Nagano should make a visit a priority.
Stephen J — Google review
Mixed feelings about this place. Firstly, the area itself is gorgeous. The walk to the park through the forest and past the geyser are beautiful. But the monkey park operation is quite small. I can see how this place would be packed instantly. Secondly, nothing much about any of this can be considered wild or natural. The hot spring pool there is man-made. And they lure the monkeys over with food via daily feeding sessions. That being said, we did manage to see 2 monkeys in the early morning who were just passing through (no food offered and not in the hot spring), so I will call that a win. But set expectations properly.
Ilse E — Google review
Look at these little pricks, they’ve got everything! The attention, the hot water baths, 2 meals a day from the park’s authority, free meds and on top of that, they tried to steal my camera. Despite all, they’re so lovable, I forgave them! The habitat of the snow monkeys is located at a 15-minute taxi ride from Yudanaka, followed by an enjoyable 30-minute walk through the woods on a well-maintained hilly gravel path to Jigokudani Yaen-Koen. Once out of the taxi and walking towards the park from the road, don’t miss the geysers here and there; they may surprise you anyways as they burst sporadically. Whenever you hear a drum-like sound, it’s only one of the adult monkeys running their 200-lbs or so (90 kg) down the hills, but don’t be scared as they are quite sociable. Do mind your pockets and accessories though, because they have some surprising pick-pocket skills and they’re not shy about them. As for the smaller ones, they run like crazy and play joyfully. One took my shoulder as a prop when jumping between 2 fences. When the big ones come out of the water, take a few steps back from them, because they skillfully shake-off the water on tourists; it seems to amuse them. Have fun and cheers!
Stephan O — Google review
Super cool! Unfortunately they don’t come out often in the autumn. I recommend winter! They posted a schedule to show the history of when monkeys have come over the last two months. We got lucky we saw 2 but apparently at peak you’d see 150 but still so worth it!
Blog H — Google review
It’s not cold enough yet for the monkeys to go in the water so there is a chance you won’t see monkeys swimming or any monkeys at all. I have been told that in the start of december it starts getting cold enough. But it looks still very nice if there are some monkeys. Price is 800 yen. The walk takes about 30/40 minutes but it’s not a hard walk.
Niek D — Google review
It was very nice to see the wildlife in their own environment! We had considered going to the zoo with our kid but this little walk in the mountains was so enjoyable. We almost didn’t get to see any monkeys but then just as we were about to leave, a few came down to say Konnichiwa! We feel very lucky!

Japanese inn
Kokuya Ryokan Shibu Onsen is a tranquil hot spring inn that offers communal indoor and outdoor baths, as well as dining facilities. Guests have praised the incredible owner and staff who provide exceptional service, including preparing fantastic meals and creating a relaxing atmosphere. The variety of healing onsen available at the hotel has been described as amazing, making it an ideal place to experience traditional Japanese relaxation.
Kokuya Ryokan was the perfect base for visiting the snow monkeys, but honestly, I could have easily stayed here for two weeks. From the moment we arrived, we felt completely taken care of—the service was impeccable, and nothing was too much to ask. The food was delicious, and for those who prefer it, a Western pillow is available upon request. But the true highlight? The baths! With an incredible number of onsen options, we made it our mission to try them all in three days—and we did! Plus, experiencing the traditional bath tour in Shibu Onsen was a fantastic addition to our stay. I don’t understand the negative reviews—our experience was nothing short of amazing. If you’re looking for a relaxing, authentic ryokan stay, this is the place to be!
Eline H — Google review
If you are planning to visit in Shibu Onsen or the nearby Snow Monkey Mountain, Kokuya must be your place of accommodation. Although I stayed only for 1 night, it didn't felt enough because I was so impressed with bot just how well their ryokan and rooms were kept, but their service and care towards guests as well. Check in: I was one a few guests whom reached the ryokan early, just before check-in time. Their staff ushered me to take a sit first and unwind, showing me pamphlets of the nearby Snow Monkey Mountain, letting me know of what I should take note as I'm heading there. I was then introduced to Jenny, a staff at Kokuya whom speaks perfect English and had no issues communicating with me. Jenny proceeded to take down my details and asked for my meal timing preference before showing me to my room. I then had my height roughly estimated by her for my yukata measurement which she brought to me immediately. Following her to my room, she briefed me the restaurant/meal location as well at the ryokan's onsen while on the way. Upon reaching my room, she handed me the master key to visit the 9 public baths around Shibu Onsen (which i had no prior knowledge of them) as well as educating me in participating in the 9 public baths. She also taught me how to wear the yukata which she chose for me as well as informing me that my tatami mattress would be set up when I am having my dinner. Check in went super smooth throughout thanks to Jenny! Room: I chose the Japanese Style Room with Open Air bath. Needless to say, the room was huge and extremely specious. Everything was prepared neatly and everything was kept clean. Jenny showed me the water adjustment for my own private onsen and warned that both the private and 9 public baths were hot so just be careful. The toilet itself was automatic and there was a remote control at the side although it's all in Japanese, I had to Google Translate some of the functions to know what I was going to press. All and all, the room was perfect. Meals: I was served a 9-course Izakaya dinner at Kokuya. This dinner was nothing but superb, being prepared by both their chef as well as their kitchen staff and carefully brought in by the hotel staff and everything tasted delicious (I was super well- fed that evening). Jenny was once again there to guide and inform me of the dishes as well as the ingredients of each dish. Occasionally, she'll check in and ask if the meal is going well. Having my meal alone, I could hear guests from other tables how satisfied they were at Kokuya's service. Their meal staff will really stop what they are doing and take time to speak to you, answering whatever questions you have (regarding Shibu Onsen/nearby temples/Snow Monkey Park/your stay at their ryokan) and ensuring you are at your best comfort. Check out: Checking out was quick, handing my key only. I thing that surprised me thoroughly was when I exited my room and headed to the front desk, their staff had already arranged the shoes for every hotel guest for wearing (see photo). This service was really top notch and their staff really went the extra mile. Overall: My stay in Kokuya was nothing but fantastic and it exceeded my expectations beyond anything. Service, check. Room cleanliness and comfort, check. Ryokan that has onsen and is conveniently located near the 9 public onsens of Shibu Onsen, check. Just can't get any better than this. Special thanks to the staff for taking care of me and answering any doubts I had regarding temple visiting around Shibu Onsen and surrounding areas. Big massive shoutout to Jenny for serving me throughout my trip in Kokuya (you were great!).

We had a very nice stay at this charming ryokan. The staff is very friendly, helpful and speaks English and everything is super well organized. You have many onsens inside the ryokan and the outside ones are the best, they are beautiful and make you feel zen (especially the Issafuroku). The rooms are spacious, traditional and nice. The walls are quite thin so you can hear other people sometimes (snoring during the night). The food was very good, especially the dinner! We arrived on a Sunday and unfortunately there was no shuttle to even get to the snow monkey park, we walked there 1 hour but it might be long for some people. Overall a very nice experience!!

We had an amazing stay at Kokuya! The staff were so friendly, the food was delicious, the location is super convenient to check out Snow Monkey Park (and also very serene), the room was spotless and so cozy. Lastly, the onsen here are so relaxing and having a variety to try within the hotel was such a treat! Would stay here again!

Stayed here in May for 2 nights to experience a traditional Ryokan in Shibu Onsen, Nagano. We choose Shibu Onsen for a base to hike at Shiga Kogen and visit the Jigokudani Monkey Park. We were warmly welcomed by the staff at 3 PM. After check-in the staff introduced us to our room and showed our futons and showed us how the hotel private onsen worked. We had two breakfast en one dinner. The kaiseki dinner was perfect! Everything was cooked to perfection. We had some regional dishes, soup and fresh sashimi and sushi. Of course I am forgetting so much more delicious food. The Ryokan also provides a key for the bath houses in town. Really fun to walk in traditional yukata and collect all stamps. Definitely recommend 10/10! And a key memory of our time in Japan!

We had a warm welcome at this charming ryokan. We tried each of the private onsens and enjoyed a private soak in the mineral water. The quaint town is a nice place for quiet strolls. We especially enjoyed breakfasts and dinners here. We got to sample many traditional dishes that I've never seen in restaurants. This was real Japanese home cooking and every bite was a delicious surprise.
Suzanne O — Google review
What an incredible experience. Every member of the staff was so kind, helpful and accommodating. The private baths were very clean and the outdoor ones were especially beautiful. The location is close to all the other walkable onsen baths and a few izakayas but you won’t need to leave the ryokan if you don’t want to. They have everything you need. The food was excellent as well. We will return. I would give 6 stars if I could.
Ian C — Google review
What an experience! You're coming for an onsen experience so let me tell you, there's almost a million options available at Kokuya Ryokan. They're booked in 45 minute intervals and you have the whole bath to yourself. Talk about luxury. Relaxingly hot, almost too much so. Some of the baths need to be cooled down with the spigot but that's no big deal. Breakfast and dinner are amazing. They bring out so many dishes in such variety that you're definitely going to leave satisfied and ready to hit the day. For me, I loved the feel of the hotel. The concierge joked that it was dungeon-like in how there seem to be an endless amount of stairwells and paths. The map won't help. Just get lost and explore. Be sure to keep an eye out for the source of the onsen. At the same time, everything is kept spotless and my room was amazing. They'll try their best to accommodate for everything you need. I would love to come back!

Ryuoo Ski Park Administrative Office is located in Kita Shigakogen, just a 20-minute bus ride from Yudanaka station. The park offers various snow activities such as snow buggy riding and sledding, making it an ideal destination for those interested in snow experiences beyond skiing or snowboarding. Visitors can also take a scenic 166-person gondola ride to the SORAterrace cafe, which offers stunning panoramic views of Northern Nagano.
Went in February when the snow was fresh and deep Didn't go skiing but just to enjoy the atmosphere. Did snow tubing and snow sledge and enjoyed the fun activities. Very worth the 1000 Yen per pax fee. Good for families and children.

Great ski resort. Not so many people during weekdays. Stunning view from Sora Cafe if whether is good. During my stay, three black runs are closed, so the runs are a bit simple. Great powder on top area.

I’ve been here several times. It’s our preferred ski resort because the hotels are within walking distance. The slopes are good for beginners and intermediate.

Great place for practicing your skills. But a bit narrow.
Lung P — Google review
One of the most picturesque ski resorts that I've been to in Japan. (Yes - pictures are accurate) Runs at the top of the mountain are nice, friendly for beginners and intermediates but sometimes narrow which leads to some traffic bottlenecks (you know...when a group of people chill out in the middle of the path for some reason). The bottom of the mountain is extremely wide. If you're travelling with beginners and looking for a quick, easy day at the mountain, this is a good place. Terrain is beginner friendly and picturesque so it'll keep everyone happy and motivated. For advanced riders, they have an extremely steep tree run that connects the top of the mountain to the bottom (therefore a long complete run) but it requires a helmet (didn't have one on me). At the bottom they have a terrain park but I wasn't able to confirm beyond a few jumps and rails. It is by no means one of the largest ski resorts, but it's great for a day trip.
Tyler C — Google review
just spent four days skiing at ryuoo and it has produced mixed feelings. my overall impression is that this is a beginners resort. most of the runs that were open were gentle to say the least. it was crowded with snowboarders and even though the resort announcer was extolling them not to sit on the runs especially at the lift exits, they were en masse and was sometime hard to get through them to enter the run, the ski school people from the JSA were excellent and now both my children can ski and this is an excellent outcome. the lifties were good, but when it gotcrowded didnt really try to max out the available seat space but i never waited longer than a fewmimutes for a lift. however it would have been better if they had opened a few more lifts once the snow fell. we were squeezed onto a few of the courses on my last day they finally opened up the final pair lift to get to the top of the bottom section of skiable mountain which made for a very enjoyable run skiing the length of three lifts about 1800 metres at first the snow quality was average being mostly man made but then it dumped with 35cm fresh powder each day but as the runs were not steep it was hard to get enough speed up to get some turns in and almost impossible for beginners who could only snow plow in reality s a day trip is enough for this mountain but there is a shuttle bus to nearby resorts, like x jam and you could base yourself at ryuoo and ski a range of resorts

We had a great time with our kids playing at their kids adventure area. Lots of different kinds of sleds; snow tubing runs; and a thrilling opportunity to drive a four wheeler around a course while your kids hangs on for dear life. I also found the staff extremely helpful and fun to be around. They gave us tips on upping the fun level and were full of excitement. Satoshi helped us get settled right as we got off the bus, which is a free, 20 minute ride from Yudanaka Station. A great place even if you're not skiing or snowboarding.

Bus stop
Snow Monkey Park, located near Shibu Onsen and Shiga Kogen Ski Resort, offers a unique experience of observing monkeys enjoying hot springs. Accessible by a 25-minute walk from the starting point or a short bus ride, the park is worth the effort. In winter, appropriate attire is essential, but rental options are available. The entrance fee for adults is 800 yen. During summer, the scenery transforms, offering a different yet captivating experience.
Visited snow monkey park in Jan 2025, must do experience if you are staying nearby. A bit of warning that it takes 1.8km (20 minutes) to walk from the bus station, but the path is nice and going through a very lovely forest. You should wear sensible boots (not shoes or sneakers) in winter, we saw many people slipping and falling.
Marina G — Google review
I went to this place in December end during winter. Its a very beautiful place. All the monkeys we’re resting and shivering in cold. Need to walk around 40 minutes from the bus stop. The time is based on how fast you manage to walk in snow. Its not easy to walk as the path is slippery. Need proper crampons and outfit especially gloves. There is also a rental shop where winter gadgets are available. The entrance fee for an adult was 800JPY. After you went back to the starting point. Near the parking there is a small restaurant. I would recommend you to eat ramen and apple pie

When I went in summer all the moneys were hiding but I went this long weekend and the scenery was completely different and fascinating !! It took 40 minutes from the bus stop to the actual Monkey park entry but the walk was really nice during all seasons !! I have seen Monkey in many different countries , I must said the monkeys at snow monkey park are the most luckiest ones because of the onsen . I

Interesting place to see snow monkey enjoying onsen. Come early in the morning as it will be crowded after 10:00

This was one of my favorite places to visit on my trip to Japan. We went at such a lovely time of year. A misunderstanding happened, and we missed the last bus to the location, but we were able to take a taxi. The taxi took us to a different location and we hiked a shortcut to the park, so we had plenty of time to see the monkeys.
TheVerucAssault — Google review
Didn’t know what to expect what way beyond any expectations I had! Be prepared if you take the bus that’s it’s a nearly 2km walk uphill with steps so it can be difficult for some. I highly recommend arriving for opening or just before as it does fill up pretty quick, we got there at 9am and while there was a fair amount of people there it was well spread out to enjoy the views and take photos. After the park on the walk down there was some great little restaurants to stop in for coffee or some great Ramen. Definitely a place to check out! Big Tip! Come in the fall, winter and spring. When they have abundance of food they don’t come down from their regular area up the mountain as often.
James C — Google review
A good visit. We hired a car from Tokyo for a day trip. It was early December and winter was just setting in. A short enjoyable walk from the car park to the hot springs. We did see the snow monkeys there enjoying themselves. It was not too crowded. An enjoyable trip and we did manage some photographs too.
RAHUL B — Google review
It’s not that easy to go this place, but it’s worth it. From the starting point, you will need to walk a distance of 1.6km for about 25 minutes. We went during winter time, so an appropriate shoes and outfit is needed. There’s a rental shop where you can rent a winter shoes and a coat too in case you came unprepared. (800¥ each for shoes and coat) The entrance fee for an adult was 800¥. After you went back to the starting point. There’s a near small restaurant where you can eat. I recommend you choose the ramen! The sight of the monkeys enjoying their hot spring bath and playing with each other was a rare moment that you can only see in this place. The monkeys are also cute and they’re really nice.

Yakebitaiyama Ski area is a winter sports resort that offers ski trails suitable for all levels of expertise. It features a platinum snow slope and gondola lifts for convenient access to the top. The gondola ride from Prince Hotel takes approximately seven minutes, where you can enjoy beautiful scenery before skiing down, which takes about 10-20 minutes. Additionally, when combined with Okushiga, it becomes an excellent resort with plenty of variety.
This is Yakibitaiyama Snow Resort located at the northern end of the Shiga Kogen Central Area and the largest in the Shiga Kogen. When I visit Shiga Kogen by car, I sometimes get confused about where to park. It's quite difficult to find the car park even trying to use Google Maps. Here the Yakibitaiyama has a couple of large car parks which are free and easy to use. I visited on 2nd April 2023, it was cold enough in the early morning and the snow surface was in good condition. People enjoy the cherry blossoms and warm spring at the foot of the mountains but we can enjoy skiing at here in Shiga Kogen! Revisited on 24 Feb 2024, it was snowy last night and the snow covered the icy slopes, well it's a very difficult condition but enjoyed anyway. Also enjoyed other snow resorts connected by trails from Yakibitaiya.
Shige S — Google review
Great skiing - lots of snow; no lift lines; not many people on the trails Only downside was the quad lift out of service so we couldn't ski the West side at all Cheaper to buy tickets from Skiosk or online than on-site (which is a bit odd?)
Peter L — Google review
Terrible. I've been anticipating to visit for 1 year and only 2 green slopes and chairlifts are open today. Snow is too icy, there is not intention to use the snow cannons. I paid for the full price for the ski pass but I can use less than half the chairlifts; 2 out the 15 ski slopes. Don't visit.

Koishiya Ryokan is a circa-1926 hotel located in the historical Shibu Onsen district, offering cozy rooms with Shōwa-period elements. The ryokan provides both private and dormitory-style guest rooms, an on-site restaurant, and an informal cafe with a bar. Guests can experience traditional ryokan atmosphere and enjoy excellent food, staff service, cleanliness, and accessibility.
Great location, super friendly staff. Read the room/hotel descriptions well before going and see if it fits what you want. The rooms are simple and bathrooms are shared. Even though it was snowing outside, we didn't feel cold in our room.

My husband and I had an absolutely amazing stay at Koishiya Ryokan! The staff were so friendly, warm, and helpful, they really made us feel at home. The rooms were incredibly spacious, spotlessly clean, and had very comfortable beds. The air conditioning worked perfectly, which made the stay even more comfortable. The location was also fantastic, central to everything you need, with easy access to local sights and restaurants. It made getting around super convenient. Overall, we were very happy with our stay and wouldn’t hesitate to come back. Highly recommend to anyone visiting the area!
Michelle Z — Google review
We stayed here during the second week of September during a heat wave, so I think it wasn't the busiest time for the area. The room we stayed in was beautiful and had great air conditioning. The location is perfect for visiting the 9 baths and for seeing the snow monkeys. The staff was absolutely wonderful. They were welcoming and kind, and went out of their way to provide excellent service. On the day we checked out, we planned to leave very early, before the Ryokan shuttle service was scheduled to start, and were going to take the bus to the train station. The staff saw us leaving and insisted they drive us instead because it was so hot and humid outside. It was such a kind gesture and we are so grateful! We hope to come back at a later time and we will definitely stay here again!
Maria S — Google review
First to clarify, I didn’t stay here so can’t comment on the hotel itself, other Ryokans recommend this place for a “western style breakfast” Coffee was very cold and average. 1/5 (¥800 for a double shot latte) Breakfast baguettes were good. 3.5/5 (¥1000 for baguette) Baked goods 2.5/5 (¥400 each) Atmosphere was nice, and food was quick.
Alister I — Google review
Great experience! We were not expecting the front desk staff to be able to speak English at all, but the young man's English was perfect! He provided any details we could possibly need to know about Onsens, the hotel with its services, and any other questions we had. We stayed in the traditional style Japanese room and it felt extremely spacious with tons of room for luggage and storage. The beds were surprisingly comfy, although it does take a little bit to make them up so if you were coming late at night you might get tired making your bed. The pillows were hard but we asked and received softer ones. Nearby Onsens were nice but EXTREMELY hot in the summer since the hot water is left on and took a lot of cold water to cool down. #9 was the most pleasant I believe.
Mitchell A — Google review
Staff had awesome English and were very accommodating. Room was super nice, clean and fairly large. Hotel has a cute bar area to hang out. It was really easy to walk to the 9 onsens (note the photos are a bit misleading, this ryokan has no private onsen - but you get a key to access the 9 public ones in the town for free). They provide robes and wooden sandals.

The World Peace Kannon Statue and Daihiden Temple stand above two towns, symbolizing enduring peace on Earth. The temple houses a perpetually burning flame from the Hiroshima Flame of Peace, while the 25-meter tall Kannon statue commemorates the impact of the atomic bomb. Nearby, Issas Pathway honors haiku poet Kobayashi Issa, leading to seven shrines along a forest trail.
The statue and shrine are in a quiet peaceful area full of cherry blossoms. Pay 100 yen to ring the huge World Peace Bell
Ted B — Google review
This Buddhist temple has seen better days but was a lovely find in the hills above the ryokan neighborhood. We sadly visited during November and so the cherry blossom trees were not in bloom but as you can see form other people's pictures it would make for quite the sight to come up the temple stairs. Inside the staff will take you on a tour that includes beating a drum that drives away evil spirits as well as a series of bowls you ring in progressive order until you come to the main temple in the base of the statue. The staff were exuberant and did not lot the language barrier deter them from taking you along on the tour.

This is actually a replica of the original statue that stood here. During World War II, the original statue was melted down, and the metal was used to make bullets and weapons. This happened to lots of bronze statues throughout Japan during that time. It was rebuilt later on.

Onsenji Temple, a branch temple of the Soto sect Teijoji, is nestled in the charming corner of Shibu Onsen. Renowned for its historical significance, it received a generous donation from Takeda Shingen and played a role in healing soldiers during the Battle of Kawanakajima. The temple's territory was expanded with 70 kanmon and contributed to the development of the hot spring area.

(Translated by Google) On the outskirts of Shibu Onsen, or rather in a place overlooking the hot spring, you will find Onsenji Temple. The name of the temple feels perfectly suited to this location. Legend has it that during the Sengoku period, Takeda Shingen came here to heal his wounds after the Battle of Kawanakajima. As it is on high ground, the views are also amazing. If you are staying at Shibu Onsen, we recommend visiting Onsenji Temple in the mornings and evenings to watch the sunset and sunrise. The winter season sees excellent snow conditions, with weekends being the only times when it gets crowded.
So many courses available for a wide range of skills. Lift passes can be found on their website, but we recommend to go early as a lot of things close around 3pm such as restaurants, rentals, etc. coin lockers are available. Plenty of parking.

A cafe with a view. I came here on a Friday to snowboard in Ryuoo Park. The lines were longer than on a normal day, so it took us 1,5 hours to get to the top of the gondola. But the views were breathtaking so it was worth the wait. The food in the cafe was delicious. So far the best pizza I've eaten in Japan. I had meat and cheese covered fries for 1000 yen and a salad for 800 yen. It's possible to visit the cafe if you don't ski or snowboard. Good for a day trip.

Beautiful view on clear days. The food is fine. During peak seasons, there is very little space and very long lines, especially whenever a gondola (~85 people) arrives - there is definitely not enough space for that many people.

Had a great bolognese pasta and margherita pizza along with a hazy view of the mountainside. It’s a lovely spot for a date so I recommend it to couples or nature lovers, but we happened to go on a day which was completely overcast, so we weren’t able to enjoy much of a vista. Nonetheless, the food at this cafe was good and the lack of a view was not their fault. We enjoyed that they had a big projector playing kids shows near the main area, as well as bubbles blowing from a machine out on the patio. ‘Twas a delight!

We arrived at around 11:30, there isn’t much queue to purchase the ticket, and we waited less than 10 minutes to get onboarded to the ropeway, it runs every 20 minutes. The ride is around 10 minutes to get up to the top of the mountains. You get a good view of the towns, rivers and mountains around this area. After a 30 minutes walk, we rested at the cafe for a drink where you can enjoy the greenery, peace and serenity. You could actually spend a couple of hours here as they served lunch and drinks. Narrating my winter visit experience when the area was covered with snow during the first week of January. Accessible by private vehicle only till the ski resort, where we park and then purchase ropeway tickets to Sora Terrace for 2500 yen per person. Two ropeways and one gondola ride are required. The breathtaking view, open cafe until 1630, and restaurant until 1500 make it a beautiful winter destination. Ensure to wear snow boots or arrive early to rent them.
Gandalf — Google review
Place is a good get away for summer. But the weather is slightly unpredictable. We reached the ticket counter at 17:00 and it was cloudy weather. So they had to suddenly suspend the ropeway from 17:45 due to rain and lightning forecast. Luckily we got the 17:20 ropeway to the top. Also, they informed us that return ropeway from top also might not run as per schedule so we might have to wait for it on the top. After a while the weather was improved and they began to run the ropeway too. There is cafe, varieties of flowers and walk around space on the top. We could capture beautiful scenes. But the “sea of clouds” view is rarely caught. Overall it is a good experience for ropeway and view from top of terrace.

Nestled in the stunning Shiga Kogen region, the Shigakogen Maruike Ski Area is a delightful destination for families and skiing enthusiasts alike. This family-friendly resort offers an array of activities that cater to both adults and children. While parents can hit the slopes, kids can enjoy a dedicated play area filled with toys, scooters, and sleds—making it an ideal spot for first-time snow adventurers.
We didn't have enough time to go skiing, but there is a great play area with scooters and sleds that kids can use. Under 3's were free entry and older kids were 1,000 yen. My two kids had a great time (11 and 13, first time seeing snow).
Will A — Google review
Nice resort with lots and lots of slopes. They don't fill the lifts, so expect a lot lower capacity (and therefore weight) than they state on the website. Also don't count on the shuttle buses to go back. February weekend was not too crowded.
Thomas M — Google review
There were lots of different sleds and ski type toys for little kids to ride on. Ideal for pre-school kids. There was a nicely made slope and a conveyor belt to get to the top. There was even a "sand pit" area to play with the snow. Nearby toilets were convenient enough. There are other hotels and restaurants within a short walk. While we were there we saw a troop of snow monkeys and it started snowing too.

First time to visit Maruike Ski snow resort and snowing day. I don’t to do skiing but enjoying playing the snow with my friends in the lower grown in kids area.
Arnold H — Google review
Great day of playing on a small slope with the kids with free use of all the equipment and only ¥1000 each! There is a restaurant there but only limited options. If you’re looking for a quiet place to have fun with the kids, this is it!
AJ J — Google review
There's a free access area with a small slope right at the entrance. Suitable for kids. Adults also can use. Various items like tubes, sledges like stuff are available for free to ride down the slope. Wearing proper, water proof snow clothes, boots and gloves are recommended specially for kids. (I wore sneakers :)
Chandima U — Google review
Very nice family friendly resort. Adults can enjoy skiing too outside and inside the kids park area. Kids park area tickets are for 1500 yen/ adult. The park includes using the kids toys. The pro ski tools rent are for 4000 yen (3 pieces rental). Rental shop is under the nextby restaurant. In general, the place is cheaper than the pro ski resorts and safer for children.
Mohamed A — Google review
I didn't ski here. The ski area is easily accessible by car and public transport. As with many of the ski areas in Shiga Kogen there is a hotel at the base of the slope. The Maruike Hotel has a cafeteria, cafe, gift shop and ski rental. They also offer adapted equipment for disabled skiers. There is a children's sledding play area.

X-JAM Takaifuji is a compact winter sports destination located in the Nagano mountains. Despite its size, it offers four terrain parks for snowboarders, slalom courses for skiers, and nordic ski trails. The resort is interconnected with the neighboring Yomase Ski area, allowing visitors to access both areas using a single ticket.
It was a very good snowboard trip. The slope is okay for beginners and for the challengers, they have bumps.

Great progression for all levels . Heaps of jump and rail / box options that kept us entertained all day. We’ll be back.

Must recommended for beginners and intermediate learners. There are multiple planes to slide down from. However, it is little bit expensive for rental and purchase of gears here compared to other places. Location wise, it's perfect for snow boarding and skiing. Bus service is available from different places to here and vice versa. Lockers costs 300 yen which is one time lock system. If we open locker then we have to insert coin again to lock it which is not good system in my opinion. Restaurant is also available on the same building on top floor which if you purchase pass to here includes some discount on foods or lunch. There is smoking area too which is convenient for smoker but it is on the way to outside. Thus, making it inconvenient for non smokers as they have to pass through smoking zone. However, there are other entrance or exit doors too. Overall, it was good experience besides being little expensive.

X-JAM is a wonderful ski resort nestled in the mountains of Nagano. By itself, it's not too big of a ski area, but it is connected to the nearby Yomase Ski area, and you can use both areas ski lifts with your ticket. It has a good range or beginner and intermediate slopes, with a few upper level slopes higher up the mountain. One good point about the slopes here is that they aren't just straight, boring slopes. Many curve around, and go through the forest to provide beautiful scenery as you ski down the mountain.

It took me just under three hours to climb and an hour and a half to descend. I recommend it because you can do the round trip even at an odd time and enjoy the beautiful views. Ryuoo Ski Park is a picturesque ski resort featuring breathtaking mountain views and hiking trails during spring and summer. The Gondola ride to the top is a must-do experience. While the lower slopes can become icy on sunny days, the top mountain's snow remains soft, thick and powdery, providing excellent skiing or snowboarding opportunities through the forest. Though not massive in size, the park caters to skiers of all skill levels with various restaurants and cafes scattered throughout.
Experience is soo amazing!!🤩 The thrill was so exciting!! If your from the top of hill you can slide for almost 10~15 minutes or even more even if your fast. The snow slides are connected to each other. There’s a place called Skyland Station(a 10-minute ride up to the top of the hill) it’s soooo high!! It was exciting but I was soooo afraid of it 😳 😱 😆 !!! Just an aerophobia 😂 ,anyways it’s a FREE ride just use your card. You will also get a FREE 500Yen drinks 🍹 up in Skyland Station while experience the top of the mountains 😊 If your expert enough you can try the snow slide ( skiing) from Skyland station below. It’s very dangerous for me but you can try if you are expert enough!! Please be careful and enjoy!!! Yes ob course, there is a card uses for lifts, and they also provide night snow slides (skiing) but up to 9 pm only. From the top of Skyland Station there is still another snow slides up hill 😂 I though it was the end but still you can ride lifts and slide uphill 😂 I never expected that. They also provide foods for dinner and breakfast maybe additional around 2000~3000yen/day if I remember it correctly. Make sure to bring a copy of your covid certificate so you can get a discount. The rest of it 😉 Have a great day ahead!!!

Decent slopes with wide areas for dodging all of the snowboarders relaxing (???) on the slopes. However, the upper and lower areas of the mountain are split by an unbearably slow gondola ride that only operates once every 20 minutes. Plus, the only slopes connecting the upper and lower areas are three "advanced skiers only" areas (US equiv.: double or triple black diamond) that are too steep for most avid skiers/boarders. There are plenty of food options around the slopes, which is very nice, but expect resort prices (e.g., a Japanese pint will be ~¥1000)
Chris B — Google review
Not a very large mountain resort but still fun. All of the runs are connected so you're able to ride from the top all the way down to the carpark if you want. Decent powder at the top even though it was quite sunny today. Rental boards/skis are not allowed on the runs right under the Sora Cafe (think it's due to bushland/trees) and you'll need a helmet if you plan to ride there. Not a lot of English speakers or signs outside of the hotels but we were able to get by. Most places (hotel, rentals, restaurants, ski passes) take card but the Yamazaki convenience store nearby doesn't (they do accept PayPay though). Take a shuttle from Yudanaka (free) or Iiyama (reserve ahead of time) to get here.

The slopes and snow conditions are decent. There are 4 beginner slopes, however due to a long holiday, it's a little busy. The view from the top is stunning (have to take a Gondola 🚠), and with the freezing temps, I warmly recommended the SORA terrace's Cafe Mocha ☕
T P — Google review
Taking the Gondola to the top was a wonderful experience. We skied here during mid February, snow on the lower slopes can become hard and very slippery on sunny day but snow on the top mountain was steadily soft, powder and thick. There was more fun to either ski or snowboard among the forest which could only be found on the top!!
Keewa K — Google review
Not a very big mountain, but lots of fun regardless. The hardest course is called Kiotoshi and is only accessible from the peak and the staff require you to be wearing a helmet, so come prepared. They have lots of restaurants and cafes scattered around the mountain as well.

If you progress up the mountain and or want to explore other connected resorts, then you really must be at least intermediate level to enjoy this. Only one way down from the Hotel side of the resort if you aren’t ready for black diamond, which is an intermediate tight road full of snow boarders that have chopped it to pieces by mid morning. Excellent undiscovered and uncrowded resort with a variety of runs good for families with small kids. One huge complaint: most ski hills have the ashtray smoking pit right beside the entrance, these guys went one step further and connected the furnace intake to the smoking room so it pumps all the second hand smoke in to the restaurant and ski shop. Ski resort
Shiga Kogen Mountain Resort is a winter wonderland that attracts ski enthusiasts from all over. Nestled just 50 minutes away from Nagano Station by limited-express train, this area boasts an impressive collection of ski resorts, including the well-known Kita-Shiga Kogen. While it caters wonderfully to beginner and intermediate skiers with its plethora of groomed runs, advanced skiers may find fewer options for challenging terrain.
One of the best ski resorts that I’ve been to multiple trails, including more scenic routes. Facilities were also top class all the way from the reception area to the lift area.
Brian C — Google review
Relative to the region, this is a good ski resort and worth visiting. I strongly recommend staying for at least 2 full days in order to properly explore all the trails. You cannot ski the whole thing in a day, don't waste your time. That being said, this mountain is infuriating to traverse. Unlike many ski mountains, this is an association of 5 different ski mountains, 1 of which is about 15min away (by car) from the rest. Each mountain is self-contained with the bare minimum effort spent in connecting them to form a single, cohesive experience. If you like waddling uphill in your skis or taking shuttles, then you've come to the right place. The Central area, which is the main feature, is a maze of trails and lifts leaving you puzzling over your map at every turn. Another annoying detail is there is no singular digital map available for the entire region, you've got to download the individual resort maps, which aren't very high resolution. They do provide a paper map of the whole region, but it's a cumbersome beast to wield. Last real gripe is that the lifts are old, slow, and uncomfortable. This whole place gives off the vibes that the last time it was infused with significant investment money was the 1998 Olympics. I could gripe more, but in the end it was still fun. If you are driving, be warned, the road up the mountain is a beast! You need good tires and a set of chains ready to go. I'd even go as far to say that a 2WD car, even with snow tires and chains, might not make it in an active snow storm.
Steven T — Google review
El Niño hasn’t been kind to the Nagano area this winter, so I’m writing this report imagining better conditions and more snow than we got this year. If you are a beginning to intermediate skier, this collection of ski resorts is amazing! So many groomed runs to choose from. If you are an advanced skier, there aren’t many higher level groomed runs. With more snow, there may be ungroomed/tree runs to find, but I don’t know to what extent off-groomer use is permissible. If you are a higher intermediate to advanced skier, BRING YOUR OWN SETUP. The quality of the rental equipment was really bad, and obviously geared towards newer skiers. The boots had so much flex in them that it felt like I was wearing a touring boot in uphill mode. So I spent the day trying not to die and had to stop early because I had to overcompensate by tightening them to max, and my toes went numb. Giving 4 stars because it’s a great place with so many lifts! But the high cost of bad rental gear really affected my experience. So that’s something to be aware of and plan for, if helpful.

(Translated by Google) 1/16 The coldest wave of the year has arrived! It was so bad that most of the lifts stopped working, and I thought the strong winds and whiteout would be dangerous, so I took a rest at a mountain station. The day ended without being able to ski, and I was looking forward to the next day, and unexpectedly, Pecan! We attacked from Okushiga Kogen! As the name suggests, this is Japan's largest ski slope, but in order to conquer all the slopes (18 slopes are grouped together at Shiga Kogen Ski Resort, you can go around them all with a lift ticket), you need to take a bus instead of using a lift. . You won't know until you go... You can connect the left half with a lift. Is this enough? The bear drop of uncompacted snow will be buried. It's not that long, so it's over in an instant, but it's dangerous if you fall. Beginners should stop. There is a non-compacted snow zone in front of it, so I think it's best to enjoy it there. However, don't attack the left side too much. (danger) You can also enjoy the expert course with a slope of about 30. Skiers are having fun carving. I went straight down from the middle and got 72km on my board (lol) The ski slopes in Nagano seem to stick to the edges and are slippery. It's basically below freezing, so the snow doesn't melt and accumulates, so it's good to have something as soft as a memory foam futon. I wasn't able to go to the top of Mt. Yokote, but it's said that the view is spectacular and you can see Mt. Fuji on a clear day. It's a shame. It was a huge ski resort that couldn't be described in just one day. If you're not sure where to go, I think it's safe to go to the mountain station. The downside is that the time you can ski is short! 16:30 is the last gondola ride back to the mountain station. And a lift ticket to ski all areas! It's so spacious! A ski resort in the mountains with the scent of hot springs Although the facilities are all old, they are quaint and attractive. I think there are fewer people on weekdays compared to Hakuba and Niigata. It's best to research hot springs for day trips. From what I've heard, the reception is open until 3pm and there are many places that don't offer day trips. We recommend staying at a good hot spring hotel or going down to the Shibu Onsen area. I skied for 2 days from 2024/02/13 to 2/14. On the first day, I skated in the central area. The view from Terakoyama is the best. There were many places to enjoy the terrain, and there were many places to ski in the forest. On the second day, we went to the Shibutoge area. It was windy so I couldn't ski the Shibu Pass area, but you can climb up to Manten View and see all of the Alps. Mt. Shiga is a picturesque extinct volcano located within a national park, featuring lush forests, serene lakes, and various hiking trails. The Shigakogen Roman Museum is a stunning architectural gem that seamlessly blends with its natural surroundings. The museum boasts a diverse collection of artworks from various genres, with seasonal exhibitions that make it worth revisiting. Surrounded by the lush nature of Shiga Kogen, the museum offers magnificent views. Visitors can admire the impressive architecture and explore galleries featuring local artwork and photography exhibitions. The serene ambiance allows for a peaceful experience, although some may find the overall exhibition slightly monotonous.
I was very surprised to see such detailed history inside the museum. Many pieces from the Roman Era plus a separate space for Art. Very economical ticket to get such an amazing experience. Even 2 3 hours are not enough to go through the historic pieces provided here. Very informative and interesting.

It costs ¥500 per adult to enter. The museum is located right near the bus stop that heads back to Nagano station. It's a good place to stop by if you are waiting for the bus and want to warm up after visiting Snow Monkey World. The art display was contemporary but there were no English explanations so it was difficult to understand what the artist was thinking. The building is very cool!
Elias ( — Google review
To be honest, it is a nice clean place with (the time I was there) 80% worthy weird art and 20% Roman art (glass pieces). So, do not expect a European Roman museum, just flow with the place.

500 yen entrance per adult. The ground floor has beautiful glass sculptures and the second floor has many Japanese paintings, letters, and tools related to Yamanouchi. Some English titles but you'll mostly be able to only tell the year the art was made in.

A nice place near the monkey park. There was a Nagano Olympic &Paralympic games memorial which was free. The museum also has a cafe inside which is a perfect place to wait for the bus since the bus stop is near the place.

Great little museum in an amazing building (seriously, the architecture itself of the first gallery with the artifacts is worth seeing). The 2nd floor had an impressive gallery of local artwork on temporary exhibition. Good place while waiting for the bus back to Nagano, but I would recommend allowing AT LEAST 20 minutes to comfortably look at the artwork… I did a 9 minute speed run of the museum right before the bus came which was not enough time to fully appreciate the displays.
Doug — Google review
There was 2-level exhibition hall in the museum. I started from the upper one - it was photography exhibition which display the photos of natural and animals. The lower one was displaying Art of Glass Figure. I liked the silent ambience, however, overall the exhibition was a bit tedious. By the way, photography is allowed inside.

Yokoteyama Shibutoge Ski area is situated in the Shiga Kogen ski region and offers majestic views of Mt. Fuji from its high elevation. This resort boasts a mountaintop bakery and provides convenient access via car or the free shuttle bus from Yamanoeki. For accommodations, Yakebitai and Okushiga hotels are recommended options, while there are other lodging choices available in Yamanouchi as well.
Spectacular view of the surrounding mountains during my autumn visit. A great place to visit while you are in Nagano prefecture.

Very small skiresort with a couple of challenging runs. For snowboarders...dont get to the greens. Those are almost flat and you'll end up walking the whole slope. When you go up to the top it's amazing and you can really enjoy the view!
Travel K — Google review
Shame that some lifts weren't open - reduced the options considerably. Poor visibility at the top especially on the Shibutoge side but that's not the resort's fault! Fun intermediate runs and also nice to say you've skied the 2nd highest field in Japan.
Peter L — Google review
Japan's highest ski resort. It's served by a series of unhooded chairlifts which ensure you get thoroughly frozen getting to the top. The top runs are slightly steep and icy and opens up into a wide and flat green run at the bottom. Not recommended for snowboarders unless you can point your board straight. It's so far from the rest of Shiga Kogen so choose wisely
Lester L — Google review
Perfect resort for intermediate skiers, and because it’s off the beaten track, you will have the place to yourselves. We came for the Christmas holidays and didn’t queue once for the ski lifts! The powder was well groomed and even in the late afternoon you could find sections of the piste that had not been skied on from the night before - a dream! A great secret gem close to the “Snow Monkeys”. We enjoyed the restaurants and the fries chicken and wedges were a hit with the kids. The ramen and the borscht also looked amazing! We’ll be back!

This is our favorite part of Shiga. The area tends to be less crowded and the scenery is absolutely beautiful. We enjoyed the snow monsters in this area more than Zao, which tends to be extremely crowded and the weather is more unpredictable. The mountains and skiing are amazing. Highly recommend checking into this area if you are visiting Shiga.

What a place to ski! The powder was perfect in the Shibutoge side -- the slopes were groomed with lots of nice spots to go off piste for untouched powder. The visibility was low at first, but once the clouds blew away, we were treated with beautiful views. We had lunch at Mt. Yokote Hyatt famous for the bread. The borscht soup with bread set was perfect to warm the belly. Lovely view from this restaurant too! One drawback of this resort is it doesn't have many slopes. We pretty much went up and down the same couple of slopes.

Kumanoyu Ski area is a small ski resort that offers a slalom trail, a basic restaurant, and a hotel with hot springs baths. However, beginners may find some slopes steep and intimidating when skiing at night.

Its spring and only 2 chair lifts are running. The snow tends to get icy in the morning but will soften after the sun heats it up. The chair lift is pretty shallow. And if ur getting off the green run. U need to get off as the chairs go all the way up to the top.

Really beautiful rotenburo (露天風呂) outdoor bath surrounded by snow. Extremely strong smell of sulphur. Guess that means it’s good onsen water? 😅
Sophia A — Google review
Mountain was badly groomed. Staff was very unaccommodating, several people fell at the chair lift and on multiple occasions staff could/would not stop or slow it down. There is no route guidance. Price high for such a small resort to force people to buy Shiga Kogen all resort ticket. Food is overpriced, 2000 yen for a meal that consists of minced chicken meat. Ketchup packets cost 100 yen. Would not recommend this ski resort at all, would not recommend Shiga Kogen in general.
Amaryllis H — Google review
It's another ski park! Like the rest of Shiga Kogen, the runs are really wide, but the lifts are PAINFULLY slow. Very quiet on weekdays which made for great skiing!

(Translated by Google) From the Chaya trailhead on the mountain pass, you can climb the well-maintained wooden steps and reach the summit in 30 minutes at standard time. However, the wooden stairs gradually become steeper, making you feel like you have to hold on to the handrail. Once you reach the top of the stairs, the trail becomes flat, but just below the summit you have to climb a fairly steep rocky area, albeit a short distance. Please be careful of falling rocks. The rocky area at the top of the mountain is collapsing, and there used to be a route before the current route that went around the rocky area and split into two chains (known as ``Otokozaka'' and ``Onnazaka''). However, it was closed due to collapse. Part of the large rock on which the shrine is placed at the top of the mountain has cracked and fallen. When climbing on large rocks, be careful to make sure there are no cracks. Access to the Chaya trailhead on the pass is by car, so most people climb the mountain round trip, but going down to Kumanoyu Ski Resort is more fulfilling. However, if you park your car at the Chaya parking lot at Kasagatake Pass and climb the steep climb for about 30 minutes, you can reach the 2075m peak. I think it's a nice place, albeit a modest one. If the conditions are good, you can see an almost 360 degree panorama. I could also see Shibu Pass on National Route 292, Mt. Asama, and the Northern Alps. Gosetsu no Yakata Museum, located in Kanbayashi Onsen, is a well-preserved two-story grand building from the Ansei era. The intricate beams on the second floor showcase its sturdy construction that has withstood heavy snow for many years. Visitors are impressed by the mansion's architecture and can take a tour for a fee to learn more about its history.
Great service. There was no place for lunch when we got there. We needed to wait. However the staff were very thoughtful to know that we were trying to catch a bus and leaded us to a sofa seat which is really comfortable. We ordered a caramel macchiato and a umeshu lock. It was amazing. The environment of that restaurant is like a traditional Japanese house. Great place to stay for a coffee.

Went as part of a snow monkies tour and ate a meal here. Would have been better if meal was warm but as we waited for others to arrive it had gone a bit cold. We ate upstairs which was also quite cold. The food was tasty and there was warm tea/ coffee available. I would like to try not as part of a tour grouo.

Hiratoko Daihunsen, a popular tourist spot, offers breathtaking views and is currently less crowded due to fewer tourists. This must-visit attraction boasts magnificent scenery and is renowned for its hot springs and rising smoke. Although car parking space may be limited, the beauty of this place surely captivates visitors.
Always amaze to see this wonderful place, Car parking is hardly for 3-4 cars, Sometimes it will get crowded.

Golf course
Suwa Lake Hill Country Club offers a challenging golf experience with its unique layout of 27 holes. While the overall distance is average, the fairways are narrow, providing a test of accuracy for players. Additionally, some sections have wider fairways to offer variety. The course is situated amidst picturesque autumn foliage, although this can pose difficulties in locating stray balls due to fallen leaves being scattered by the wind. Nevertheless, players can enjoy an extensive and diverse food menu at the club.
(Translated by Google) I used it for my accommodation plan. The hotel room is a single room. I thought it would be a bit small, but I didn't have much luggage so it wasn't an inconvenience, and there was a refrigerator, TV, kettle, air conditioner, yukata, and tanzen. The toilet has a state-of-the-art washlet and the sink is separated for each person, which I appreciate. There is a free massage chair in the changing area of the bath. The grass on the golf course is well-maintained, and the greens are neatly mowed with no ball marks. The course is varied and quite enjoyable. Both the hotel and clubhouse seem to have a long history, but the facilities inside are modern and clean. The food was delicious and the quantity was just right. Morning coffee is free at the clubhouse restaurant.

(Translated by Google) This time we will introduce "Suwako Lake Hill Country Club". I came at the beginning of Obon. The forecast was for rain in the afternoon and cloudy skies in the morning, but nothing like that happened and it was just a hot day. It was a day where I was more concerned about the heat of the sunshine than the humidity. Play time was also a little late. I thought the limited edition meals had disappeared. Oh my God! ! ! ! There was some left! “Large shrimp tempura bowl”! I have no choice but to order this. I'm looking forward to it. The restaurant at Suwa Lake Hill had a large table and was very nice with plenty of space for 4 people. Tendon has appeared. The three giant shrimp that seem to pierce the sky are like the Sky Tree. When you eat one, the crispy shrimp appears inside the crispy batter. The sweet sauce was also a nice touch, and it covered the rice so much that I could eat the rice just with the sauce alone. Having three bottles is very luxurious. It's great to think that even if you finish one bottle, there will be another one lol It's filling, but even after eating all three, I didn't feel hungry at all. Next time if there is a special meal, I would like to try it.

There were some holes where the tee grounds were bald and it was difficult to take a straight stance, and some holes where the rough and green edge grass was quite overgrown, but overall it was well maintained and I enjoyed playing. I couldn't see Lake Suwa. The carts were manual and old, but they had navigation, so it was easy to understand even for first-timers. However, there is no air conditioning in the clubhouse (except for the bathroom). The restaurant only has large electric fans for meals. The staff were sweating while serving. Since this year, measures against heat stroke have been made mandatory, so even if it's a highland course, shouldn't there be air conditioning? We went to our car every time to cool off. At the very least, they should clearly state on their website that "There is no air conditioning in the clubhouse of this course." This is something to consider if you're playing in the summer. As an aside, I was asked twice to specify the time for delivery, but in the end a different time was specified, so I corrected it online. . . 。。

(Translated by Google) This was my first time playing here. Overall, I think it's a good golf course. I played the outbound course from the east. The course is narrow. Especially on the outbound course, the left slopes uphill and there's out-of-bounds. The right slopes downhill and there's no out-of-bounds, so if you hit into the right slope, you can't get back on the course! It was hellish. I'm not sure if the rough was recently mowed, but it was shallow, which was a relief. There were some noticeable areas of peeling grass on the green, but it didn't bother me at my level. The meal was more filling than it appears in the photo. I think it would be good for younger people. Unfortunately, the Kuroneko bag I received was damaged and in tatters. It had clearly been swapped with someone else's. It was only my second time, so I wish they'd been a little more careful. It wasn't expensive, but I've only used it twice, so thank you. (Translated by Google) It is said that during the Sengoku period, Takeda Shingen often visited Jiunji Temple, which is located near this stone. One day, Tenkei Zenji, the head priest at the time, stood on this rock in the temple grounds and told Takeda Shingen, ``Try shooting an arrow at me,'' and had him do it from close range. However, it seems that the arrows that were shot bounced off the rocks and never hit the Zen master. Takeda Shingen was curious and asked about it, and was told, ``This rock has the power to protect against arrows.'' Since then, there is a legend that Shingen received the arrow talisman imbued with his psychokinetic powers and went into battle.
