Hachijo Botanical Park, located in Hachijo-jima, takes advantage of the warm climate to showcase a diverse range of plants from both local and international origins. With approximately 100 varieties of tropical and subtropical plants, including hibiscus and bougainvillea flowers, the park offers a vibrant display. The pathways, adorned with red volcanic gravel, create a tropical ambiance for visitors to enjoy.
A nice free botanical garden with very cute animals. You can feed them leaves. The animals was the highlight!

Hachijo Botanical Park is a truly beautiful and lush hidden gem on the island, offering a unique experience that's a must-visit for any nature lover. The botanical garden is incredibly well-maintained, with various paths winding through diverse tropical plants and trees, making for a wonderfully relaxing stroll. What truly sets this park apart, however, is the magical phenomenon of the glowing mushrooms. Seeing these bioluminescent fungi softly illuminate the darkness was an absolutely unforgettable and almost surreal experience. It adds an incredible layer of wonder to an already peaceful setting. During the day, the air is so refreshing, and the nature is vibrant. This park perfectly blends education with a sense of wonder, making it ideal for both leisurely walking and exploring. It’s an experience you won’t find just anywhere, especially with the chance to witness the natural glow. The glowing mushrooms make it feel like stepping into a fairy tale.

Would highly recommend. Very peaceful gardens where you can hear lots of birdsong and see a wide variety of plants and scenery. There is also an area fenced off with small dear, called "Kyon" in Japanese which is a nice place to sit and enjoy the surroundings. It's only a 20 minute walk from the airport and the visitors center is also well designed for children so I would recommend a good 2 hours to fully enjoy the park if you have the time.
Anna P — Google review
Much bigger than expected and free! If you ask in the information center for English guides they have a few brochures. A must on Hachijo.
Jon Y — Google review
Good amount of ground to cover. Free parking. Most of the attractions were closed by the time we arrived (want to say 3 or 4 PM). The deer enclosure needs to be larger for the animals.
J G — Google review
Small muntjac deer in an enclosure are very friendly. Small but beautiful fish tank in the visitor center with many local reef animals.

(Translated by Google) It's a modest tourist spot. I've been traveling to Hachijojima about once a year for about 30 years, but this was my first visit. I was satisfied to learn about the island's ecosystem and learn about things related to it. The Hachijojima Muntjac is also cute ❤ I learned about Hachijojima Muntjac from the old manga Gaki Deka! It was a much smaller deer than I had imagined. There was a stuffed specimen at the Pricia Resort Hotel, which went out of business a long time ago, but the living Muntjac was completely different from the image I had of it. If you're here, I recommend seeing the Muntjac of Hachijojima. The tropical botanical garden was also a good learning experience. The way bananas, vanilla, and other tropical foods grow, and the traveler's tree (Tabibitonoki) were spectacular. The glowing mushrooms at the visitor center can be seen in an instant if you close the curtains, so I think it's a good idea to see them. There are also large stuffed turtles on display. In fact, when you go fishing on Hachijojima, you sometimes have the chance to see large turtles. Especially when fishing at night, I have seen turtles with heads as big as humans. Just looking at the stuffed turtles is impressive. I would especially recommend this to people visiting Hachijojima for the first time.

(Translated by Google) Hachijo Botanical Garden is a public facility run by the government, yet it's surprisingly packed with content. Despite the free admission, the garden is expansive and well-explored, and I enjoyed it more than I expected. What particularly impressed me was the abundance and diversity of plants. Surrounded by the impressive trees and flowers unique to the tropics, it felt like I'd wandered into another world. The greenhouse area was particularly impressive, allowing me to see rare tropical plants up close, and it was full of learning and amazement. The garden is also dotted with little delights, such as a delicious gelato shop. When you feel a bit tired from exploring the garden, it's a delight to enjoy a cool, sweet gelato. There's also an area where you can observe glowing mushrooms at night, a fantastical sight unique to Hachijojima. The different charms of day and night are also fascinating. As a government-run facility, I had a slightly stuffy impression of it, but it was actually a relaxing and exciting tourist spot. In addition to the impressive plants, there is also a combination of gourmet food and unique exhibits, making it a place that can be enjoyed by a wide range of people, from children to adults. It is a recommended park that is definitely worth stopping by when visiting Hachijojima.

Miharashi-no-Yu Hot Spring is a popular onsen in Hachijojima, offering indoor and outdoor baths with stunning views of the coast and ocean. The facility has separate bathing areas for men and women, each with its own unique view. It's recommended to visit two days in a row to experience both sides. The hot spring is accessible by bus, but there are no nearby dining options, so bringing your own food is advised. Green tea is available for free.
The outdoor onsen has an excellent view of the sea. I visited during the evening and enjoyed looking into the ocean. You can see few whales at far also.
Bhanuka S — Google review
A nice Onsen overlooking the sea, too bad abit cloudy. I was using the Bus-pa 2 days pass using mobile app. The network here wasn’t that good. But managed to connect to an unsecured wifi. The towel here cost $300 yen. Advice to bring your own, in my case a souvenir.
Steven S — Google review
Awesome spot for 500yen only, with a stunning atmosphere and view and a friendly staff. But it gets packed fast. Was lucky to enjoy it by myself for a while before so many people showed up.
Fiso — Google review
There's 2 bathrooms for men and women as same as other onsen. One of them has extremely good ocean view. And the rooms exchange based on the number of date, even number or odd number. So I recommend you to come here 2 days in a row. And bus comes just few times a day. There's no place to eat around here. So I recommend you to bring some food. Green tea is free of charge with self-service.
Ahimsa 4 — Google review
The hot spring which represents the island. As it is common in Japan this hot spring divides men and women for their baths and it changes daily who can enter the "beautiful" side of the hot spring. However, I have been to the both sides and I'd argue that both are equally beautiful. You can enjoy the ocean view from both sides so no worries there.
Mantas J — Google review
We enjoyed the beautiful star while in hot spring! We will visit again!
Akiko K — Google review
Very nice outdoor pool Onsen, which actually was second or third best in Japan. Views are great, facing south, so while you can’t see the sunset directly, you can see the sun go down behind the mountains. As they switch the pools daily between gents and ladies, should go at least twice. Admission was 500 yen, so it’s on the pricey side, but I’d say it’s definitely worth it twice.
J K — Google review
No frills onsen with a fantastic view of the mountains and ocean. Note that while we had the onsen pretty much to ourselves (mid-June), the onsen is reportedly packed during most other seasons. This onsen does not have food or onsite massage. Just the onsen with a Hachijoujima towel you can purchase.

(Translated by Google) These are my impressions from a visit quite some time ago. There are no shops or anything, but there is greenery even in the crater, so beautiful is probably the best word to describe it. It doesn't require much physical strength either. At the time, we had it all to ourselves, and even now only people who can make it to the island come, and since their main purpose is probably to see the sea, you can enjoy the view from the mountain without the crowds. The ranch on the slope along the way is beautiful, and the cows are adorable. Whether you're halfway up or on top of the mountain, it all contributes to the beautiful scenery☺️ (Original)

The Hachijo Visitor Center is a contemporary art museum that showcases historical, cultural, and event-related information about the botanical park and Hajijo Island. The center offers unique and diverse learning experiences on the nature and origins of Hachijojima, including an impressive video screening area featuring sea creatures. Furthermore, each exhibition theme features handcrafted introductory texts alongside actual specimens, creating a spectacular impression for visitors. Visitors can also explore the carefully maintained botanical garden divided into themed areas for an authentic nature experience.

Outdoor Activities
Sokodo Beach, located on the stunning island of Hachijo-jima in Hachijo-machi, is a unique gem that stands out as the only man-made beach on the island. With its striking dark sand and well-maintained shower facilities, it offers a perfect spot for relaxation and fun. This beach is particularly famous for its incredible sea turtle sightings, making it a must-visit for snorkeling enthusiasts eager to explore vibrant marine life.
This beach is very safe, with lifeguards constantly on watch. Since it is located within a bay, even when the waves are rough in the open sea, it's still possible to swim in the bay. Sometimes the sun can be quite intense, and the lifeguards seem to work hard under the heat. Unlike other beaches, the bay has a sandy bottom, so there aren't many fish, but you can still spot plenty near the nearby rocks. This is one of the safest swimming areas on the island. Because of the sandy bottom, there’s no risk of injury from sharp marine life, and you can float freely on the water. The beach is equipped with showers and restrooms, making it very convenient.

Nice clean green emerald water, but can get dirty with plastics and other debris... Volcanic beach with black sands is tiny. Mountain view is nice. Beautiful viewpoint overlooking the west side of the island! There is a parking spot and you can cross the street to see the amazing view! No need to buy ticket at all. It is free access. Nishiyama, also known as Hachijofuji, is an island formed by a volcanic crater with walkable trails leading to a summit that offers stunning views of the Pacific Ocean. With an altitude of about 854m, it boasts a beautiful cone shape similar to Mt. Fuji and is considered the highest peak among the Izu Islands.
(Translated by Google) Although the footing was poor due to the typhoon, I had the courage to give up and climbed the mountain. (Translated by Google) It started from the 7th station, but it takes a lot of physical strength to climb up. There are so many stairs, and by the half way sign, it's still half way! ? It almost breaks my heart. But it's worth the effort. If the wind is strong, visiting the pots can be scary, so it's better to go on a day with less wind. Touring the pots can be scary, but if you have the energy and time, I think you should definitely give it a try. The ocean side is nice, but the mountains are amazingly forested. I thought that even an erupting mountain will become a forest over time. I never get tired of looking at it even if I walk around it. It was clear and calm up to an altitude of 700m, but near the crater, there was nothing to block the wind, it was covered in clouds, and winds were strong, reaching 8-10m/s. My 6-year-old son said it was scarier than Mt. Hoken. The ridge was narrow, and it was my son's first experience bushwhacking with sideways gusts. He couldn't maintain a stable position in the strong wind, and it looked quite challenging, so we climbed to the summit and gave up on circling the Ohachi crater because it was dangerous. We can try again someday. I think it was a good thing we did, as it would have been terrible if we had pushed too hard and caused an accident for my child. There was almost no wind impact from the trailhead to the crater area where the Ohachi crater circumambulation is taking place. However, in the Ohachi crater circumambulation area, even though there was nothing to block the wind and the ground was calm, there was considerable wind impact and the ridge was narrow, so please be careful. On a clear day, you can enjoy spectacular views of Miyakejima, Mikurajima, Aogashima, and Hachijo Kojima from the crater. Also, just a few hundred meters from the trailhead is Fureai Ranch, where you can enjoy beautiful views of the townscape of the Sakashita area of Hachijojima and Hachijo Kojima. In Makoto Shinkai's ``Your Name,'' there is a scene in which the main character, Mitsuha Miyamizu, offers kuchikamizake to a shrine on a small island in a swamp inside a caldera. There is Sengen Shrine inside the caldera of Hachijo Fuji, and you can also see a small swamp on the central cone. The location is quite close to what the anime envisions. This time, I climbed the mountain without proper equipment, so I descended the mountain without visiting the Sengen Shrine or visiting the pots inside the caldera. It was sunny and extremely hot at the bottom, but there were clouds near the top. Sometimes the clouds parted and we were able to enjoy the view of the world below. At this age, climbing more than 1,000 steps was quite a challenge. I was sweating profusely. Although the mountain trail is well-maintained, there are no easy places to take a break along the way, and the stairs and slopes continue in a straight line, making it quite tiring. You can drive up to No. 7, where Fureai Farm is located, so I think even beginners can climb this mountain with a little effort. However, be careful of sudden changes in the weather. Once you get to the top (or more accurately, the Ohachi Meguri junction), there is a course called Ohachi Meguri that goes around the crater. It looks like it will take about an hour. I walked halfway, but the weather suddenly looked like it was going to get bad, so I gave up on going around the bowls. Actually, it seems that you can see a wonderful 360 degree view when you go around the bowls. It was a shame to give up, but I think I made the right decision at the time because I was hit with gas on the way down and I couldn't see anything around me. The Fureai Ranch is a suitable place to visit for those who are physically fit and equipped with a touring bike. It is advisable to have a decent low gear and general fitness to climb with the bike, although walking it up is also an option. The advantage of ascending with a bike is that you can later descend via a different route, adding variety to your experience.
Hachijofuji Makino & Fureai Bokujo truly embodies the beautiful nature of Hachijojima. The expansive ranch offers breathtaking panoramic views that stretch endlessly across the ocean and the surrounding island. It's a remarkably peaceful and relaxing environment, a perfect escape from the ordinary. Watching the cows graze freely in such a picturesque setting is incredibly calming. The opportunity for interaction with the animals, including curious goats, adds a lovely, unique dimension to the visit, especially for kids. The fresh, refreshing air and the sheer scale of the landscape make it an ideal spot for a leisurely afternoon. It's a fantastic photo spot for capturing the vastness of the nature and the charm of the farm animals. This must-visit experience offers not just a view, but a profound connection to the island's serene beauty and agricultural life.

I climbed with my touring bike definitely only recommend that if you have decent low gear and general fitness though you could walk it up with the bike I suppose. Benefit of going up with bike is that you can go up, then down later via different route for variety. Nothing overly special about this farm though you can get pretty close to the cows and calfs if lucky. Decent sights of the area in good weather. I also used this as a visit spot to spend bit of time waiting for the clouds to clear (if you time well clouds can disappear during afternoon) I gave it 4 stars mainly because this is the last stop for toilet or drinks before the hike and crater loop so I assume most will get here on the way up.

An explanation board said that it was a shrine dedicated to Princess Ubaihime, the wife of Kotoshironushi-no-Mikoto on Hachijojima, and her son Kohoumaru. It is a Shikinai shrine that is also listed in the Engishiki Shinmyocho, and is the general guardian of Hachijojima. As you know, Kotoshironushi-no-Mikoto is a god who appears in the myth of the transfer of the country. He advised his father, Okuninushi no Mikoto, to hand over Izumo Province to Ninigi no Mikoto, the grandson of Amaterasu Omikami (Amaterasu Omikami). It is said that after leaving Izumo Province, Kotoshironushi no Mikoto ruled Miyakejima and died. This is the origin of the so-called Mishima faith. It is no wonder that Mishima Shrine is enshrined next door. At the back of the shrine building, next to the main shrine building, there is a stylish Christian lantern said to have been built by Senjiro, a wandering stonemason. In addition, the cobblestone walls and the giant Sotetsu tree in the precincts are spectacular. Therefore, I set aside two "backup days" in case I couldn't return. Essentially, I stayed overnight on Hachijojima, one day before my return flight and the day before that. However, since my trip to the outlying islands from Aogashima went as planned, I was able to use those two nights to circle Hachijojima. And this is Upai Homyo Shrine. It's the main shrine of Hachijojima, and its deities are Yasoyahime and Kohomaru, the roots of Tanabata faith. While its origins are unknown, this ancient temple's name can be found in the Engishiki (927). It's located about 200 meters inland from Prefectural Route 215. While there are few buildings nearby, if you look carefully, you can see it from the prefectural road. The temple grounds also contain a rare Christian lantern, believed to have been made by the exiled stonemason, Senjiro. Of course, they were paid for their labor. Even exiles with skill could live this way. I couldn't help but sing along to the lyrics, "Setting off on a journey with a single knife wrapped in bleached cloth..." (Lyrics by Tonomura Tetsu, Music by Iida Kageo). By the way, my business is similar in some ways. "Skill and courage wrapped in white*..." ...And so, I'm off for a bit. (Translated by Google) Hachijojima is on the path of typhoons and has been frequently hit by them. For this reason, it is customary to surround houses with stone walls to protect against wind damage. This stone wall is one of the most elaborate stone walls on Hachijojima. Round stones of uniform size are piled up using an elaborate technique called "Roppo-zumi". Since the building that surrounded it was a camp, the effort and cost may not have been of concern. These round stones were collected from Yokoma Beach (Yokomagaura), about 1 km away. It seems that the exiles were paid one rice ball per stone to transport them. It is a cheap reward if you like. However, walking 2 km round trip consumes about 90 calories of energy. Since they also carry luggage, the consumption is estimated to be 1.5 times that, 135 calories. And since one rice ball is about 200 calories, it seems that the energy balance was somehow positive (although this is just a calculation...). By the way, there is a condition called "topophobia". It is a condition in which people have a strong aversion to clusters of small holes or bumpy things, but it seems that the size of the bumps that people react to varies from person to person. Some people are frightened by the size of a beehive, while others have difficulty taking close-up photos of compound eyes. And for me, the size of this stone wall seemed to be the "size." Gritting my teeth, I managed to take this much, but that was the limit. This is the result of having the opportunity to see a valuable cultural asset. I'm sorry. 2025.5.19

Originally the site of the mansion of the Hattori family, who were in charge of the shogunate's official ships during the Edo period. Although none of the original buildings remain, demonstrations of ``Hachijo Taiko'' and ``Kashidate Odori'' are held here. The cycad trees that are said to be 700 years old and the cobble stone wall gate are also worth seeing. When I visited, it was after the performance had ended, but the staff were kind to me. Kaminato Port is situated in the northeastern part of Hachijojima island, offering a wharf for large ocean liners. The island itself is characterized by the Miharayama and Hachijo-Fuji ranges, with steep coastlines at Miharayama and Hachijo-Fuji's northwestern side, while the area between features gentle slopes and plains.
Kaminato Harbor is a port area which consists of a passenger harbor and a fishing harbor. The harbor has a large coastal protection building so that it can be seen from a distance. Hachijō-kojima is a small uninhabited volcanic island located 7.5km away from Hachijojima, accessible only by chartered boat due to strong currents making it impossible to swim across. The island offers amazing views around its crater, which takes about an hour to circle. In 1969, it became the first Japanese island to be completely evacuated and now stands as an uninhabited destination.

The Summit of Mt. Hachijo-Fuji is a breathtaking destination that offers stunning panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and the nearby island of Hachijo Kojima during daylight hours. This hike is accessible for beginners to intermediate climbers, making it an ideal adventure for those looking to explore nature without extensive experience.
(Translated by Google) It takes just under an hour from the trailhead to the summit, but from the fork in the road to the crater and the rim, there is a narrow path that makes it impossible to pass each other if you go clockwise. It is difficult to go back, so once you start going around, you need to go around once, and if you go around slowly, it takes about an hour and a half. There are short trees growing, and you will have to go through some parts. Trekking pants are essential to avoid injury from scratches from branches. Also, the wind is strong when going around the crater, so the temperature feels low. You may get hot from moving around, so bring a jacket and water to adjust it. However, the scenery is spectacular, so if you have a certain amount of physical strength, I think you can go around. I had to be very careful, as I couldn't see where I was standing. Once I made it through the vegetation, I found myself on a scree-covered slope. The occasional wind and rain made my steps even heavier. Still, the views between the rain and sunshine were spectacular, with the green of the mountains and the blue of the sea a beautiful sight. With little prior information, I parked my car on the side of the road and casually started climbing from the entrance, but I think it would be a good idea to spend about 3 hours round trip to the top of the mountain. When climbing, we recommend that you be prepared with proper clothing and hydration. I only brought one plastic bottle, but to be honest, it wasn't enough. Also, when we reached the top of the mountain, the wind was so strong that it was difficult to walk properly. Starting here, the crater perimeter perimeter is the midpoint, and the summit is the midpoint. I thought it would be no big deal compared to the crater perimeter of Mt. Fuji, but after about 5 minutes I started to regret it. There are signposts at appropriate intervals, so there is no need to worry about getting lost. However, the path is in terrible condition. The path is covered with vegetation, just like an animal trail. This makes it impossible to see the condition of the road underfoot. It is muddy in places and your feet will be scooped up. When the vegetation stops, it becomes a scree field. There are slopes on both sides of the path, so if you fall, what will happen?... Still, it may have been easier since the weather was good. Plus, we could see Hachijo Kojima clearly, and we were able to see the first flight take off. So, as a pioneer, I strongly recommend the following. Wear sneakers at the very least. If your lower legs are exposed, you may get injured by the hard branches of plants, so wear long pants. There is nothing to block the sun, so wear a hat. In summer, carry at least 1 liter of water. Even those who are not confident in their physical strength can climb the mountain trail to the top without any problems as long as they take breaks in between. There were quite a few people with their children, and even small children were climbing with their parents. There are no restrooms anywhere from the entrance to the mountain trail to the top, and the only restroom is at the farm, so it's best to relieve yourself there. There are only 7 or 8 parking spaces in front of the trailhead, so we recommend going early in the morning even during the off-season (other than summer). There are no signs prohibiting street parking, but it's always better to get there early. At 8:30, there were already 4 cars parked (as of November). Nambara Senjojiki is a captivating island destination that offers an awe-inspiring sight of stone resembling lava formations. The rugged cliffs and gusty winds add to the dramatic ambiance of this place. The overall view is truly enchanting, with its wild and tranquil atmosphere during the day and a breathtaking sunset at dusk. It's important to exercise caution when visiting this spot, especially if you have children, as there are steep ridges and cliffs near the water.

(Translated by Google) This place is also famous for viewing the harvest moon. However, the moon was only 3.7 days old on this day, making it difficult to enjoy the view. It's also said that if the weather is good, it's possible to see Aogashima, but we arrived at 5:50 PM. As you can see, there was no view of the horizon. So... Nago Observation Deck, about 100 meters further back from here, shows a temporary closure on the map. There's a rope strung across the path leading to the observation deck. Perhaps it's a landslide or something? It's dangerous, so we turn back. The rest house is also locked and inaccessible. I peered inside, but it was empty, with only a table. They probably don't serve food or drinks there anymore. As I was heading back to my car, I happened to look around and noticed a stone monument. It was a memorial to the 16th Shin'yo Special Attack Unit. Shin'yo was a suicide weapon developed by the Imperial Japanese Navy at the end of the Pacific War. The boats were made of plywood, approximately 5m long and 1.7m wide, and were equipped with a 250kg bomb mounted on the bow, designed to crash into enemy ships. At the bottom of this stone monument is a plaque detailing the history of the 16th Shin'yo Special Attack Unit, and at the top is a stone slab engraved with the calligraphy of politician Abe Shintaro. Why is Abe Shintaro at this memorial for the kamikaze units? After researching, I found out that Abe joined the navy as a reserve student while attending Tokyo Imperial University. He was assigned to the kamikaze units, but the war ended before they could be deployed. He then became a politician who supported the turbulent postwar era. I feel like I've gotten a glimpse into the core of his political philosophy; my hands are in peace. Tide pools are artificially separated from the sea, and there is a small hole in the pool, and when the waves are high, the waves can get in a little beyond the partition. Even when there are whitecaps, tide pools are calm and safe with no waves. I thought it was an artificially divided sea, but when I entered it I was surprised. Perhaps because it is connected to the ocean and difficult for large fish to enter, it is like a paradise for small fish, and there are many brightly colored small fish. Moreover, the transparency is very high. Unlike the bottom soil, there are no sea turtles or large fish, but there are far more small fish than in the bottom soil. It's so beautiful. Since we visited at the end of September, the pool had no water. The seawater pool is 1.2m deep and is made of concrete, so you don't have to worry about waves or jellyfish. Marine shoes are not allowed, so you will need to take them off. Due to high waves at the beach, swimming is prohibited on that day. Even in that state, the seawater pool in the tidal pool is extremely calm. Transparency allows you to observe brightly colored fish just by bringing your face close to the sea surface. You'll regret it if you don't bring a snorkel. The water temperature is also quite high as it is heated by the sun. It's a rocky area, so it's a good idea to wear marine shoes, and the water can get deep quickly if you're not careful, so keep an eye on children. Parking is free, but please note that spaces are limited. The road is quite narrow along the way, and it is unclear where you can park if it is full. Of course there are no shops, but there are no vending machines in sight, so you will need to prepare your food and drinks in advance. Karataki Waterfall is a picturesque tourist spot that requires a wide-angle viewfinder to capture its entirety. The average water volume adds to its charm. Upon initial observation, the hole located beside the waterhole may be mistaken for a wind vent, but it is actually an artificially dug passage adjacent to it. This cliff can serve as a strategic fortification when connected with other moats. Research suggests that rather than being excavated for sulfur retrieval, the tunnel was likely created intentionally.
(Translated by Google) It is located about a 15 minute walk from the sulfur marsh. Unlike the road to Sulfur Swamp, the road is considerably worse. The mountain trail crosses streams and has steep slopes, so it's a good idea to bring hiking shoes and gloves. The waterfall is a wonderful place that will make you feel like you are in a hidden gem. The area around the waterfall basin was cool and wonderful. (Translated by Google) It's no exaggeration to say that this is a truly hidden gem. This area is prone to landslides, which often result in road closures, so it was truly miraculous that we were able to visit such an amazing place. *The photo was taken when we visited around May 2022. The hiking trail is not well maintained, so please watch your step. Along the way, there is a fork in the road that leads to Mt. Mihara, but it is overgrown with bushes and impossible to proceed. It was so dangerous that you could lose sight of the trail if you tried to go any further. To reach Mt. Mihara, you will need to return to the parking lot. We are saddened by the damage caused in various places by the typhoon that struck on October 9, 2025. There is a risk that Karataki Falls may have collapsed again. In the event of a typhoon or heavy rain, we recommend checking the site before heading there.

(Translated by Google) I visited during Golden Week in 2024. The location of the parking lot is a bit confusing, it's on the right side of the road leading to the waterfall. Be careful not to park in the wrong place by mistake. The waterfall was located further back than I expected, and the road leading up to it was about to collapse due to a landslide, so it was in a very dangerous situation, but it was worth the effort to see it. The height of the waterfall was so high that I couldn't take a picture of it all with my smartphone, and the amount of water was so abundant that I was fascinated by it for a while. It's a dangerous path even for adults, so I can't recommend it to everyone, but if you can, it's definitely a waterfall you should go see. While English signage may be limited, the experience of reaching the top is worth it. Nestled in the serene Oga-go area of Hachijojima, the Site of Ukita Hideie's Residence offers a unique glimpse into Japan's historical tapestry, away from the bustling tourist spots. To find this hidden gem, simply follow a small sign behind Nakata Shoten and stroll past a private home. While there are no grand structures to admire, visitors can appreciate remnants of history such as cycads, a tranquil pond, and an ancient waterway that whisper tales of the past.

Follow the small sign behind Nakata Shoten to reach the historic site, passing right by a private home. As one person put it, "There's just a monument and an explanation, no buildings." However, the site still retains vestiges of its past, including cycads, a pond, and a waterway. History buffs have expressed interest in the possibility of seeing stones from Okayama Castle on display, evoking a romantic connection to the local area. Also, since the site is privately owned, some visitors commented that "they will pass through a garden, but this is a consideration." Because there are fewer tourists, this is the perfect place for those who want to immerse themselves in a quiet atmosphere and appreciate the historical site. Asobidaira-Makino Watchtower is a hidden gem that offers stunning views of Hachijo Kojima, especially during sunset. While the area isn't overly crowded, it provides a peaceful atmosphere to soak in the scenery. Accessing the watchtower by car is convenient, but parking along Hachimaki Road and walking up might be advisable due to narrow roads. The surrounding landscape features charming spots like Fureai Farm where you can occasionally spot cows grazing nearby.
(Translated by Google) It's not very crowded, but the view is nice. There is a sign that cars are prohibited from entering the road on the south side. However, there is some space around the hut. (Translated by Google) In the early Edo period, the entire Izu Islands were considered a "penal colony," but by the end of the Edo period, it was reduced to just three islands: Hachijojima, Miyakejima, and Niijima. The number of people exiled to Hachijojima numbered 1,900 in the 265 years from Hideie Ukita in 1606 (11th year of Keicho era) to 1871 (4th year of Meiji era). By the way, if you are found to be leaving the island, you will be sentenced to death. However, in principle, exile was a life sentence, so it is not surprising that there were people who tried to escape on a high-stakes basis. In fact, there were records of people leaving Hachijojima 15 times during the 265 years mentioned above. However, only one case was successful. One example is Kisaburo of Sawara. A chivalrous man whose real name was Kisaburo Hongo, he was born in 1806 (Bunka 3rd year) in what is now Sawara, Katori City, Chiba Prefecture. In May 1837, he was exiled to Hachijojima for killing a gambler. In July 1838, he and five of his companions escaped from the island and washed ashore on Kujukuri Beach. However, three months later, he was arrested again in Edo and imprisoned. He was released on May 9, 1845, but died one month later, on June 3, at the age of 39. Just a side note. In October 1931, a man was sentenced to life imprisonment for murder. After that, he escaped from prison and was re-imprisoned several times, and was exiled to an isolated island called Devil's Island. But I didn't give up. He threw a bag of coconuts over a cliff, grabbed onto it, and was able to escape. A movie called ``Papillon'' was later made based on the autobiographical novel written by this man. Two great actors, Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman, co-starred. Moreover, the music is by Jerry Goldsmith (author of Rambo's main theme). Please take a look at this masterpiece, which will give you hope for tomorrow. しかも音楽はJerry Goldsmith(ランボーのメインテーマの作者)。 2025.3.3

(Translated by Google) It's said that Hachijojima suffered from chronic food shortages during the Edo period, and efforts to reduce the number of mouths to feed were frequent. One piece of evidence of this is that elderly people were abandoned here...it's basically a veritable example of "The Ballad of Narayama." There's a similar "abandonment hole" on Yonaguni Island: Kubura Bari. Islanders suffering under heavy taxes are said to have pushed a pregnant woman off here, reducing the population by two. It was a desolate, eerie place. These sites serve as "witnesses" to what life on a remote island was like in the past. By the way, thinning refers to the removal of slow-growing plants or seedlings with misshapen leaves, but in the Edo period, the custom of killing newborns and infants to reduce the population was called "thinning." It was a custom that was also practiced on Honshu. Northern Kanto and Tohoku have often suffered from famine since ancient times. Up until the early Showa period, it was common for girls to be sold to human traffickers. It's easy to imagine what it was like even earlier. It's unthinkable now, but it's said that in times like these, when a mother was malnourished and couldn't produce milk, or when she had too many children to feed, it was common for them to kill newborns. By the way, there is a folk craft called kokeshi dolls, which is a variation of the word "ko-keshi" (child-killing), and is said to have been a memorial to the spirits of children who had been culled. 2025.3.25

(Translated by Google) Considering the famine on Hachijojima, it may be unavoidable to reduce the number of people I talk to, but I can't help but think about what it would be like to be abandoned here. If people were brought here when there were no roads, the physically weak people would be unable to leave this hole where they were sheltered from the rain and wind, and would starve to death. There is also a water hole a little further down, so you may not feel thirsty. I think the person who threw it away also left it in this hole because they wanted it to live as long as possible. A small Jizo statue is watching over it now. Nestled on the picturesque island of Hachijojima lies Tanaba Tanba's Grave, a site steeped in local legend and history. This grave honors Tanaba, also known as Eve of Hachijojima, who is said to have survived a catastrophic tsunami that devastated the island long ago. As the only survivor, she gave birth to a son and continued her lineage through an unconventional tale that has become part of the island's folklore.
(Translated by Google) I visited his grave on August 8, 2024. The Tanaba faith is said to be unique to Hachijojima. According to the commentary board, a huge tsunami engulfed Hachijojima a long time ago, and only Tana, a pregnant woman who had clung to the boat, survived. Eventually, Tana gave birth to a son. Legend has it that when she intersected with her grown son, her descendants increased and became the ancestors of the islanders. I think it's nice that it's not as tragic as Oedipus in Roman mythology, which is typical of Japanese mythology. The tombstone itself seems to have been replaced during the Meiji period. After giving birth to a son, Tannaba has a child with her own son. The child then gave birth to more children, and this process was repeated until the population of Hachijojima recovered. All the islanders, except for the exiles, are descendants of Tanaba. If Tanaba had been pregnant with a girl, Hachijojima would have become a deserted island. In order to preserve the tradition of Tannaba, efforts are expected to be made, such as making a picture book and reading it aloud at kindergartens on the island, or incorporating it into games and plays. (Translated by Google) There is a legend that goes, "Long ago, a huge tsunami hit Hachijojima and only one pregnant woman survived. Afterwards, she mated with the boy she gave birth to, and their descendants multiplied and became the residents of Hachijojima." To be honest, it's not a very pleasant story. However, there are many stories in myths and legends about heroes being born through inbreeding. In Greek mythology, there is the story of Gaia and Uranus (parent and child), Rhea and Cronus (sister and brother), and Zeus and Hera (brother and sister), and in Japanese mythology, there is the story of Izanami and Izanagi (brother and sister) (although there are also objections). The origin of this legend is the "Hachijo Jikki," written by Kondo Tomizo, who was exiled to Hachijo. And the original source of that story is "Kyuseki Soujima Banashi (1819)," written by Takahashi Yoichi, a Chinese scholar from Hachijojima, but in that book, the baby born is a girl. Kondo Tomizo (May 31, 1805 - June 1, 1887) was born as the eldest son of a samurai. He committed an assault and was exiled to Hachijojima in 1827, where he died. "Hachijo Jikki" is a 72-volume memoir that compiles what Tomizo saw and heard during his 50 years on the island. The contents are highly credible, and it is now a "Tokyo Cultural Property." Tomizo must have been a highly cultured person, since he compiled such a memoir. He may have known these myths and intentionally dramatized the story of Tanba. By the way, there is a circular road (Route 215) on Hachijojima, but the road from Tanba's grave to Sokodo Port is a difficult stretch with many winding roads. Locals have advised that non-islanders should refrain from passing through. If you are still concerned about this, please be careful. 2025.5.21

History of southern reclamation to Minamidaito Island, Ogasawara Islands, Saipan, Tinian, Guam, etc.
