Lake
Lake Tōya is a popular resort area known for its stunning caldera lake, which features picturesque islands and offers boat tours and hot-spring baths. The region also boasts a variety of dining options, including a renowned soba restaurant in the town of Toyako Onsen. Additionally, visitors can explore the Toya Caldera and Usu Volcano UNESCO Global Geopark, Japan's first registered geopark.
As per our tourist guide, lake Toya was formed by the eruption of Mt. It, and is the ninth largest lake in Japan in terms of area, and the third largest of the crater lakes. marathon has been held here since 1975, and every year many athletes run along the scenic lakeside course. indeed a great view despite the snow surrounding the lake. We had great lunch here, enjoyed curry rice☺️
SherryG — Google review
Came here because the lake is the motif of Verity Lake in Pokémon series. The view is beautiful and it is worth taking the cruise to explore the lake. Note that the last ride (16:30) does not bring tourists to the island in the middle of the lake.
Eric C — Google review
A picturesque lake with many activities and sights along the shore. Tranquil and relaxing. You can drive around the lake. The southern end has a lot of accommodation and food options. The island in the centre: Nakajima, can be reached by ferry. The monthly fireworks display during summer another draw. In all, this place is definitely worth the trip from Sapporo.
Ron Y — Google review
Lake Tōya is one of the most beautiful lakes in Hokkaidō, surrounded by mountains and a peaceful natural atmosphere. The water is crystal clear, shimmering in shades of jade green and deep blue that look stunning in every season. Walking along the lakeside or taking a boat ride offers refreshing views that feel calming and unforgettable. The area is also known for its relaxing hot springs, perfect after a day of exploring. At night, the lake becomes even more magical with spectacular fireworks that light up the sky and reflect beautifully on the water. Overall, Lake Tōya is a perfect destination for both relaxation and breathtaking scenery, day and night.
Min M — Google review
Lake Tōya becomes the best destination for me in Hokkaido. All great scenery with quiet atmosphere. This time I just have a 1-day trip. But I suggest to have at least 1 night here with the travel route.
Sooksira G — Google review
30/04/2025 Reached about 10.30am at Lake Toya. Took a bus from Toya station. The area was really quiet, with lots of shop closed. I going to assume it is due to Golden Week. Therefore, there wasn't really anything to do other than sightseeing. The wind was rather strong so the Swan boat was not available for rental. There a few free footbath onsen which was nice to have, not particularly hot but do remember to bring a small towel in adv so you can wipe your feet. Lots of tourist bus dropping by and going to the Nakajima island. I didn't venture far but I believe it is a good place to visit during late spring and early summer. The sky cleared mid afternoon and it was more pleasant. I was able to see a clear Mt Yotei and it was beautiful! I suggest staying at least a night here so that you can do more exploration. Mine was a day trip.
Huan L — Google review
very peaceful and relaxing location. There is a cruise and swan boats for activities. Very fresh air
David T — Google review
Went to Lake Toya for a day return trip. It’s very beautiful and there are some nice hotels there. The boat cruise on the lake is a must do activity. You can get off the boat at the central island, hike around for several hours and visit the natural museum there, before hopping on the next boat for the return trip. There is a firework show over the lake in the evening; but it was too late for my return train so I didn’t see it.

Volcano
Mount Usu is an active volcano standing at 2,405 feet high and offers a pedestrian walkway to a lookout point with breathtaking views. It is located near the serene onsen town of Toyako Onsen, which boasts an abundance of hotels and traditional inns. Visitors can relax in geothermal pools while enjoying stunning views of Lake Toya. The area around Lake Toya features numerous hot spring facilities, making it one of the most extensive hot spring resorts in Hokkaido.
You can take ropeway to the top, cost about 2000yen per pax. The view from the top was superb. There are plenty of chairs for you to sit and enjoy the views.
Michael L — Google review
Great if you’re looking for a chill and slow hike. It’s costs ¥2000/person for a round trip ticket for the gondola. The gondola intervals are 15 minutes. You can also pay ¥1,100 for a one way trip a you can hike back down but it will be further away from the starting point/carpark. It’s also paid parking (we paid ¥500 - parked around 2pm), but when we got back to the carpark around 4pm - there were no more parking attendants, so maybe you can park for free after 4 but the last gondola leaves at 5.15pm so take note!
Kevin R — Google review
After all the great food in Hokkaido, it's good to take a day out for hiking around mount Usu, the active volcano at lake Toya. The walk usually is about half a day and if you are lucky, you can see steam coming out from the mountain. 🚶
张TakWAI — Google review
Even from far distance you can see the steam coming out from all direction at the Gunnima crater, it is a sight to behold. We went up by cable car so we only went half way down the trail as it leads to the sea side, which is the opposite side to Lake Toya. I suggest others to take the cable car up one way and hike down. Those stairs are relentless as you can see from the photos.
Carnivore H — Google review
The trail is a good hike, just be prepared for the parking costs and the buses of tourists in the autumn season. Hiking the other side of the mountains is also great and gives you a great chance to see the power of the 2000 earthquake on the houses and roads the passed through the area. There is free parking available on the western side.
Barry A — Google review
We've been here in mid-september 2017. We took the cable car to mount Usu and watched lake Toya and Showa-shinzan from the first viewing platform. From the second viewing platform you can see the summit of mount Usu. From there we took a short hike along the rim of the crater. The walk was absolutely beautiful and the smoking mounting is seen all along the way. From the end of the trail you can also see the stunning view of southern Hokkaido across the bay. Allocate 2-3 hours for the entire trip.
Eyal G — Google review
Amazing wide view on this top of mountain. You can rest, take a coffee and relax here.
Theera S — Google review
Scenic ropeway and clear beautiful view on top of Mount Usu, with a terrace facing Lake Toya to relax and appreciate nature. There’s a short walk around, but we did not go further down the boardwalk as it seemed slightly too far for us. Recommended to visit if around the Lake Toya area!

Shōwa-shinzan is a striking lava dome that rises majestically to 1,306 feet and is known for its captivating volcanic smoke. If you're planning a visit to this stunning area, it's easy to combine your trip with other nearby attractions like the Usuzan Ropeway. A short bus ride or rental car from the terminal will take you to both sites, which are conveniently located just 15 minutes apart.
A volcanic lava dome next to Mt. Usu. The peak is now 398meter and still actively smoking. This can be prove by no snow covered the peak as the surface are very hot, snow will melt and not stick on the surface. Had a nice lunch there and walking distance to Showa Shinzan bear ranch.

Ice cream shop
Lake Hill Farm is a picturesque destination in Hokkaido, particularly in the Toya area. The stunning scenery includes the majestic Mount Yotei as a backdrop and an array of adorable animals like rabbits, cows, sheep, and goats. Visitors can indulge in delicious gelato ice cream available in various flavors while taking in the breathtaking views. Additionally, the farm offers other dining options such as pizza and main courses to savor amidst the beautiful surroundings.
very pretty scenery, peaceful, and a great place to bring your family or just on a relaxing outing. all the milk products were amazingly creamy and rich! all the flavors are unique and worth a try. the cheesecake was decadent and the cream puff pastry was light while the cream was lightly sweetened. the farm also has a horse (not friendly), a goat (friendly and like taking photos), and bunnies and rabbits.
Hanna K — Google review
Walking across the gentle pasture toward the little cottage at Lake Hill Farm, you feel as though you’ve stepped into a pastoral postcard. The gelato counter inside smells faintly of fresh milk, and the cases are lined with rows of creamy delights — melon sorbet, rich chocolate, corn, pumpkin, and more. I opted for two scoops: the corn and rum raisin. The corn flavor was unexpectedly luscious — sweet but not cloying, with that fresh-field-kernel brightness — while the rum raisin paired dark notes of raisin with creamy indulgence. Each bite was velvety, cool, and pure. But the magic doesn’t stop there. Stepping outside, I strolled through flower beds and gazed at the fields and distant Mount Yōtei. The crisp air, the silence, and that ice cream in hand felt like time slowed down just for you. It’s not just dessert — it’s a moment to pause and savor Hokkaido’s gifts. In short: Lake Hill Farm’s ice cream is sublime — fresh, creamy, thoughtfully flavored, and enhanced by one of the most beautiful settings in Hokkaido. It’s absolutely worth a detour if you’re touring around Lake Toya.
Min M — Google review
Came day before and had ice cream. Very smooth and tasty. Creamy and milk based better. Chocolate ice cream nothing special. Environment is nice with beautiful grounds and view of Mt Yotei. Came today. Shop opens at 9am but all pastries not ready. Disappointed and had to settle for coffee, hot milk, pudding (nice) and one slice of cheese cake 🙁
Paul C — Google review
Very picturesque cafe. Ample parking. Personally didn’t like the gelato that much, and cone seemed cheap. The milk pie on the other hand was very good, excellent pastry. Nice flowers in front of the stores. A goat named Yuki and some sheep behind also provide good photo opportunities. Good place to stop by for a break.
Xunliang L — Google review
Lovely place to catch a glimpse of Mt Yotei. We visited during Oct 2025, and they had a sunflower field in the front. Recommended to try their local ice cream flavours like pumpkin, and also their pizza.
Serene L — Google review
Nice place to stop at for a quick bite. They have ice cream too but the weather was too cold for any of this. Milk pie is nicer compared to cream puff. Milk pudding is good too.
KahSeng T — Google review
This was near our hotel so we came for lunch and ice cream. The small restaurant serves up a limited choice of pizzas and there are also some desserts like cream puffs. The pizzas are average but the vegetable pizza is not to my liking. The cream puffs are good. The ice cream is sold next door to the restaurant and is very popular. There is a queue for the ice cream. There are quite a few flavours to choose from. The ice cream is really good. Outside there is a large empty field and there are some smiles Like rabbits and goats to look at not not much else. Families with kids can let them run around and the place provides some catching games to play with. Overall I recommend that you can pop by for the ice cream if nearby and enjoy a nice view while eating the de cream.
Gooose — Google review
Very good location with such beautiful views on top of a big grassy field with mountain at the background. Perfect place for kids fo roam around, and for adults to have some coffee and pastries and pizzas. Would recommend!

The Shikotsu Toya National Park Silo Observation Deck is situated on the western shore of Lake Toya, offering a breathtaking panoramic view of the volcanic lake, Mt. Usu, and Nakajima Island. Visitors can also enjoy helicopter joy rides for an aerial perspective. The deck provides a stunning vantage point to admire the shimmering blue waters of Lake Toya and its surrounding islands.
We stopped by the Silo Observation Deck while driving around Lake Toya, and it turned out to be one of those unexpectedly pleasant breaks. The view was absolutely stunning—panoramic sights of Lake Toya, Mount Yotei, and the mountains beyond. It was quiet when we were there, which made it even more peaceful to just take in the scenery. There’s also a shopping area right by the deck that sells all kinds of local snacks and souvenirs. We picked up some treats to take home, and the kids had fun browsing the unique Hokkaido specialties on display. It felt more like a mini travel stop than just a viewpoint. Parking was super convenient—right in front of the building and free of charge. Everything was clean and accessible. We spent a good half hour here taking photos, exploring the shops, and just soaking in the fresh air. A really nice spot to stretch your legs, grab something local, and enjoy one of the best views in the area.

A great stop with a fantastic vantage point overlooking Lake Toya and Mount Yotei. The views are absolutely beautiful and well worth a photo stop. There’s also a souvenir shop with a nice selection of local snacks and yoghurt to try. Plenty of parking available — a convenient and scenic spot to take in the beauty of the area.
Sharyn C — Google review
Gorgeous view of Lake Toya. Great stop with a big gift shop attached with restrooms and a restaurant upstairs. Unfortunately the restaurant was closed today (Mon 3 Nov 2025). The gift items are quite interesting, ranging from souvenirs to foodstuff and products like horse oil ointment. Outside this big building is a small quaint building with a soba shop ran by 1 man called Soba Lab. The chef is very meticulous in his cooking and the food is delicious. I had the mountain yam while hubby had the mushroom soba. Both were superb. There is also an option to take a helicopter ride to see the lake view but it too expensive for us. Although a good stop for photos and restrooms.

Sairo Observatory: Panoramic Perfection in Hokkaido If you're exploring the stunning landscapes of Hokkaido, Japan, a visit to the Sairo Observatory (サイロ展望台) is an absolute must-do. Perched strategically overlooking the serene Lake Toya, this observatory offers some of the most breathtaking panoramic views you'll ever witness. Getting There Located near the town of Toyako, the Sairo Observatory is easily accessible by car, making it a popular stop for those on a road trip around Hokkaido. There's ample parking available, so you won't have to worry about finding a spot. You'll often find tour buses here too, indicating its popularity as a key scenic spot. The Views That Will Mesmerize You From the moment you step out onto the observation deck, you're greeted with an expansive vista that will simply take your breath away. The shimmering Lake Toya stretches out before you, its deep blue waters reflecting the sky. In the middle of the lake, you'll see the distinct shapes of Nakajima Island, adding to the picturesque scenery. Beyond the lake, the majestic peaks of Mount Usu and Showa Shinzan rise dramatically, a testament to Hokkaido's volcanic activity. The contrast between the tranquil lake and the rugged mountains is truly captivating. Whether it's a clear, sunny day or a moody, misty one, the views are always spectacular and offer fantastic photo opportunities. More Than Just a Viewpoint While the views are undoubtedly the main attraction, Sairo Observatory also offers a few amenities that make your visit more enjoyable: * Souvenir Shop: There's a well-stocked souvenir shop where you can find local Hokkaido products, snacks, and, of course, items related to Lake Toya and its surroundings. It's a great place to pick up gifts or a memento of your trip. * Restaurant/Cafe: If you're feeling hungry or want to grab a coffee, there's a restaurant and cafe on-site. You can enjoy a meal or a hot drink while still taking in those incredible views, often from large windows designed to maximize the scenery. * Restrooms: Clean and well-maintained restrooms are available, which is always a welcome convenience, especially on longer road trips. Why You Should Visit Sairo Observatory is more than just a viewpoint; it's an experience. It offers a perfect blend of natural beauty and convenience. It's an ideal spot for: * Photographers: You'll be spoiled for choice with the stunning landscapes. * Nature Lovers: Immerse yourself in the vastness of Hokkaido's natural beauty. * Families: Easy access and amenities make it a comfortable stop for all ages. * Anyone looking for a moment of peace: The serene environment is perfect for reflection. Final Thoughts My visit to Sairo Observatory was a definite highlight of my Hokkaido trip. The sheer scale and beauty of the landscape from this vantage point are unforgettable. If you're anywhere near Lake Toya, make sure to carve out some time for this incredible spot. You won't regret it! Have you been to Sairo Observatory? What were your favorite views or memories? Breathe taking views. But not too accessible by public transport. I rented a car and drove here. Had a picnic next to the lake, was wonderful experience.

Lovely viewpoint, though very crowded and our tour bus mostly used this to get commission from the gift shop. If driving independently, I would head straight for Lake Toya or a similar view at Usuzan Ropeway for a more relaxed experience.

Showa Shinzan Bear Ranch is located near the active volcano that shares its name. The ranch houses brown bears in concrete enclosures and offers vending machines with food for the animals. Despite being a small ranch, it provides an opportunity to interact with the bears by purchasing cookies to feed them. Visitors can throw the cookies into the cage or use designated holes for feeding.
Cute encounter! 🐻 Shōwa-shinzan Bear Ranch offers a fun and safe experience with Hokkaido's iconic brown bears. A must-visit for animal lovers and families 😊
Rachmad B — Google review
It was nice to be able to see these beauties so up close, but then I’m really not sure what’s the story here. Are these bears being rehabilitated? Are they let back into the wild once they’re well? Or do they live here their whole lives? Which would be really depressing. We did see baby bears as well and they were so adorable. But again they were kept in this glass walled box. So it’s hard to make assumptions about what state these bears actually live in, because I’m not the biggest fan of zoos where animals live in abysmal conditions. I can see if you want to keep few animals for educational or rehabilitative purposes. But to keep so many in each enclosure is not something I’m in favour of.
Arti P — Google review
It is not worth visiting. Bears are kept in small enclosures with no landscape to help stimulate and protect the bears from the changing weather. The entrance fees is a hefty 1000 Yen which you can learn nothing much about bears except their sufferings being kept against their wills. The ranch can be completed within 15 mins if you are not trapped into buying fruits to feed them. Many bears looks malnourished, and the facility seems to want to profit from that by encouraging visitors to spend more to buy overly priced apples and packs of cookies. The cubs were separated from their mothers.any other bears are confined in cages. There are nothing to learn about bears too. Buses of tourists are loaded here, lined with manyany souvenir shops. So it is a commercialized touristy attractions that are not worth your precious resources. I believe there are better places to spend your valuable money.
Est M — Google review
The Shōwa-Shinzan Bear Ranch is an interesting place to visit — we were happy to see so many bears up close, and they are really cute. It was fun giving them cookies and watching how they interacted, which made for a unique experience. However, we also felt a bit sad because there are quite a lot of bears kept in a relatively small and caged area. It would be much better if the management could provide a larger, more natural space for the bears to live more comfortably. Overall, worth visiting to see the bears, but there is room for improvement in how they are cared for.
Min M — Google review
Visited in mid-June and found the bears rather lethargic—perhaps due to the weather. They lounged about with little interest, even as visitors tossed biscuits their way. Amusingly, crows were far more energetic, often swooping in and beating the bears to the treats! While the farm offers a close-up look at these magnificent creatures, the overall atmosphere felt a touch melancholic. Worth a brief stop if you’re nearby, but manage expectations.
Isaac S — Google review
Cute to feed the bears. However, spaces are somewhat tight and they lack nature. Some bigger areas with bigger pools, trees, some grass, whatever additional space would be much better. The park is surrounded by so much nature so hopefully they can expand in the near future.
Taku Y — Google review
Good if your kid loves watching bears on TV, lol. Entrance fees are expensive for the experience. It has 4 different units, with a lot of bears (8-10) in a single unit. They seem to trained to ask for food so that's fun to watch but I hope they are not starved so we can see this. Its not a ranch, more like a zoo, caged zoo. Overall not a good spot, not recommended.
Toshali G — Google review
My family and I who are tourists visited this "bear ranch" - or "bear zoo" - today when we were also in the area for the Mount Usu Ropeway. Whilst initially we were "excited" to see some Hokkaido bears "up close", we later "mixed feelings" if such an attraction was a good thing in terms of wild(?) animal welfare, because seeing the bears "begging" for food from visitors was to us, quite sad in that the bears have been conditioned in such a way. So, I am sure if it is a good idea to recommend this attraction to anyone.

Nestled within the stunning landscape of Hokkaido, the Toyako Visitor Center serves as a gateway to understanding the fascinating volcanic history of Mt. Usu and its surrounding ecosystem. This small yet informative museum showcases engaging exhibits that delve into significant eruptions from 1977 and 2000, utilizing audio-visual materials and interactive displays to bring these events to life.
The visitor center at Lake Toya is quite informative and interesting to explore. Entrance is free, but there's also a paid museum which we did not visit. It's worth checking out to gain some knowledge about the area. We spent about 30 minutes here but didn't fully read all the exhibits. On a Monday at noon, it wasn't very crowded, but it wasn't completely empty either.

Sought shelter from the heavy snowfall. Glad we did! The volcano museum is so well done. While just a small space, there's a good variety of exhibits from the 1977 Mt Usu eruption. Includes a simulation space experiencing the tremors leading up to the eruption. Ended with a 15min mini feature in a small cinema. The cinema shakes too! Entrance fees is 600 yen

The Usuzan Ropeway is a delightful recreational tramway that offers an unforgettable journey to stunning elevated views of Lake Tōya and the volcanic crater of Mount Usu. In just six minutes, you’ll ascend from the base station to the summit, where breathtaking panoramas await. Along the way, keep your eyes peeled for majestic sights like Mt. Showa-Shinzan and Mt. Yotei. Once at the top, visitors can stroll along a 1.
I loved this place. It is totally worth going to the top of the hill because you get gorgeous views of the whole valley and even Mt Yotei. The gondola takes about 6-7 minutes one way, and it’s available every 15 minutes. I had a time constraint as I came with a tour group and we also went to the bear ranch nearby. But I guess you can skip that spend more time here to explore the top.

The view is breathtaking, we able to see the lake and mountain view at once. To travel from City to The Lake and Usu spent about 2 hours so its recommend to visit this place earlier and check the cable car closing time.

Mt Usu was probably one of the highlights of our trip. It was a very cold day but we were lucky it was also sunny so the view was just stunning. This was our 2nd ropeway during our Hokkaido road trip and as compared to Daisetsuzan, Usuzan is way better. It was newer, faster and felt smaller so we weren’t so squeezed. The views at the top were just amazing anywhere you looked. We decided to go on the crater walk. It was pretty steep at parts but the paths themselves were easy to walk on. We did wish the signs were clearer - we weren’t sure if it was a loop or you had to go back. Turns out it was not a loop. After the strenuous climb back to the ropeway, we stopped at the Cafe to get a Perilla soft serve, which we enjoyed on sofa seats overlooking the stunning lake view.

We arrived about 3pm and we're able to buy tickets immediately. A short wait and we were inside the cable car. It was a short and smooth ride. From the station, turn left to go to the crater lookout. Quite a steep climb up with many steps. It was super windy and cold (3 November); about 7° but with the wind, it was likely 4°. Love the smoking craters clearly seen from the observation deck. Hubby walked about 20min to get to the scenic shot spot. It was a very hilly hike. The observation deck on the right side of the station was a short walk only. The view was of the town and Lake Toya. Very pretty too. We spent about an hour and enjoyed the view and took many pictures. I didn't know the station had long puffy (orange) jackets which visitors can borrow before exiting the station. Very practical and useful. If you haven't layered enough, do borrow the jackets.

Tickets are cheaper on klook but have to book a day in advance. We went 10+ on Sunday/Nov2 and had no wait. There is the terrance side and crater side. Both were beautiful. On the crater side, you do need to climb. It was cold with the wind but the view make up for it. Recommended!

A must do on a visit to Lake Toya with absolutely stunning views from the summit of Lake Toya and surrounds. In the warmer months there's a trail also that would be open closer to the crater and back towards town.

A simple yet charming LED light display that truly shines at night. The short tunnel, illuminated with colorful LEDs, creates a unique experience—almost like traveling through time. However, during the daytime, it may look a bit less impressive. Still, it’s a fun and visually pleasing spot to visit after dark!

Lake Toya is a stunning destination that captivates visitors with its serene beauty and vibrant activities. This picturesque lake features charming pathways perfect for leisurely strolls or biking, allowing you to soak in the breathtaking scenery. You can also enjoy paddle boating or take a scenic cruise around the lake, which is especially enchanting during summer when nightly fireworks light up the sky. The surrounding area boasts lovely parks where families can unwind and children can play.
Lake Toya in winter is like a scene straight out of a postcard. The serene, mirror-like surface of the lake reflects the surrounding snow-covered mountains, creating an absolutely magical view. The crisp winter air and the peaceful ambiance make it an unforgettable experience. Walking along the lakeside promenade, you’ll find stunning photo spots at every turn. The view of Mount Usu in the background adds to the beauty, and if you’re lucky, you might catch the seasonal fireworks lighting up the night sky over the lake—it’s pure magic! Whether you're there for a quiet stroll, a romantic getaway, or just to soak in the beauty of Hokkaido in winter, Lake Toya will not disappoint. A must-visit if you're in the area!

Amazing views of Lake Toya on a clear day. Nearby there's the Toya-usu UNESCO Global Geopark where the mountain looks exactly like Mt. FUJI. There's also a cute goat with its red small hut to make the mountain views even more beautiful. The ice - cream here is a must - try for all icecream lovers as the milk is different.

With more hot spring facilities than any other resort in Hokkaido, it’s a haven for relaxation. The serene atmosphere is complemented by nearby attractions like Mt.
One of our favorite onsens! Separate areas for men and women, it’s open for day use if you aren’t a hotel guest. You can also rent towels and there are lockers. The onsen has several indoor pools and several single to double occupancy outdoor open-air baths. Incredible views! So worth it.

Nestled on an island in the picturesque Lake Toya, the Nakajima Mizuminomori Museum is a seasonal gem that celebrates local natural history and the forest industry. Accessible via a scenic ferry ride, this charming museum offers visitors a chance to explore its fascinating exhibits while enjoying stunning views from the silo observatory.
We didn't visit the museum itself but really enjoyed our visit to Oshima Island. Nakajima is the name of the group of four islands in Lake Toya, of which Oshima is the largest. A pleasant journey across the lake, and then we took the shortest walking route through the larch forest. I suppose if you don't stop, it takes 45 minutes, but it's so picturesque that we kept stopping to take photos and look for birds. The track can get a bit muddy and steep in sections, but for this short track, ordinary trainers would be fine. Everyone has to register at reception as you leave and check in when you return and take a numbered tag on a lanyard, but there are no staff out on the tracks. We were back by lunchtime but didn't visit the cafe as we'd bought a picnic. There are comfortable chairs and little tables under the trees looking out to the lake - an ideal spot. Together with the ferry trip, it was a lovely morning activity and I'd say very suitable for children too.
Pamela A — Google review
A very refreshing trail, with routes of varying difficulty suitable for all kinds of visitors.
Hao-Yun C — Google review
It was a great place with many natural scenes that are rare. It starts with a boat trip to the center of the island, the we see the mangrove trees. At the dock, there are beaches and a huge oak tree. Further inside was an ancient forest which do no get lost. Also there is a beehive in the entrance so beware
Superuser L — Google review
Nakajima Island, located in the center of Lake Toya, is a perfect destination for a peaceful hike surrounded by beautiful scenery. Upon arriving on the island, the first thing you'll see is the Nakajima Mizunomori Museum, which serves as the visitor center and the trailhead. Before starting your hike, it is mandatory to register. You'll need to write down the name of your party's leader, contact information, the number of people, and your estimated hiking time on a logbook and take a number tag. The trail is a loop of about 5.5 miles (9 km) with a moderate elevation gain of around 800 feet (245m). The path is very well-maintained, and the sound of the lake's waves, resembling the ocean, accompanied by the fresh scent of the pine forest, makes for a truly healing experience. Along the trail, you'll find interesting signs that explain the island's natural history, such as a reforestation area recovering from typhoon damage in 2004, and a large grassy plain called 'Ōhira-gen' where pine trees once failed to thrive due to soil conditions. Our hike took about 2 hours at a comfortable pace. We narrowly missed our ferry back by just 5 minutes, but it wasn't a major issue as the next one was only 30 minutes later. This gave us a pleasant opportunity to rest and eat the lunch we had packed. Tips for Hikers: • Registration is a Must: Don't forget to sign in at the museum before you start. • Last Ferry: Be mindful of the time. The last ferry departing from the island is at 4:50 PM. Plan your hike accordingly so you don't miss it. • Pack Accordingly: Bringing water and some snacks is a great idea, especially if you have to wait for the ferry. Overall, it was a fantastic and highly recommended experience for any hiking enthusiast visiting the Lake Toya area.
KEVIN — Google review
A medium size island in the middle of the lake, it's free to go in to the park and a small cafe for you to wait in for the next boat if you don't want to hike in the park.
Danny M — Google review
We were told the boat and the island only open in summer. It was in fact a very nice experience walking on the island. Apart from visiting the forest museum, you can also walk INTO the forest. First, you need to register at the reception of the forest museum with you name and time if you plan to walk into the forest. There are paths you can follow in the forest so it is not a problem. it is a real forest so you will see different kinds of insect and animals. The gate close at 3pm so make sure you go early enough!
Henry C — Google review
Museum with a small cafe inside. Also the entrance to the Nakajima Adventure Route. Recommand for a hike if you have the time but make sure you register at the entrance and leave enough time to catch the last ship to leave the island.
Iad D — Google review
Wow that was pretty crappy and they don’t tell you this when you before you take the ferry - the last entry for ANY walk is 230 pm, and we took the 2 pm ferry, got to the visitor centre at 234 pm and the guy was really rude about it being closed even though we just wanted to do the smallest 45 minute forest walk. It was a waste of time and money to come on the ferry just to be stopped from entering and seeing the forest upon landing.

The Lake Toyako Long Run Fireworks Display is a spectacular event that takes place almost every night from late April to the end of October. The fireworks are launched over the lake and can be seen from various vantage points along the lakeside, as well as from some hotel rooms. This display attracts tourists and creates a joyful atmosphere, with the entire sky and lake surface illuminated by colorful bursts of light for about 20 minutes each evening.
Great atmosphere! Will personally recommend to be at the lake front to fully experience the sound waves from each blast, rather than being from behind a window if your room is along the shore. Visited in late Sep when it was not too cold yet, and before the fireworks season ends for the year.
Alex Y — Google review
On May 7 (Wed), 2025, my wife and I boarded a castle boat and watched the fireworks from its top deck. On May 8, (Thurs), my wife and I watched the fireworks from the lake front. The daily 20 minutes showtime begins at 8:45pm. While the perspectives and feel were different, I prefer the down-to-earth one, and the images with the boat in the background support that.
Peter C — Google review
One of the more disappointing fireworks that I’ve seen. The fireworks do not appear choreographed and seem to be set off at random. The fireworks are mostly set off individually with a rather long pause in between. Took the boat to view the fireworks, 1,700 Yen for each adult. Boat was cramped with many other tourists, so had to jostle for a good view. Did not think it was worth it. But if around the area, free fireworks is better than no fireworks.
Xunliang L — Google review

I could view the firework from hotel room from 845pm, lasted around 8mins before they moved to next spot. It's not long enough but at least something to do at night at Lake Toya.

Its a beautiful lake with many hot spring hotels around it. If you are hotel guests, you could watch it from your rooms or if you are just happen to be there. Frankly it is not worth going there just to catch the fireworks especially if you have seen better ones in Japan. There aren't a lot of "bursts".

The special, uni don! If you're a fan of uni, sea urchin, then this is a must. It's a bit pricey but the portion is quite large, reportedly they recently increased the size. Nestled in a nature-rich landscape, the Konpira Crater Disaster Remains Walking Path offers a poignant glimpse into the aftermath of Mt. Usu's eruption. This unique trail allows visitors to explore remnants of the devastation that occurred during the 2000 eruption, including abandoned buildings and damaged infrastructure like bridges and housing complexes. As you stroll along this paved path, informative panels provide insights into the disaster's impact on the local community, evoking a sense of humility before nature’s power.
The remains trail is quite short tho interesting. If you continue to go up you can see the craters and also amazing views of the lake, even without going directly to the paid observatory. Pay attention that the trail closes at 16:00, so plan enough time to go out and back
Amit M — Google review
The first part of the walking path is an interesting paved walkway around the ruined buildings from the disaster, and it contains informational placards. The second part transitions quickly from a chill walk to an actual, muddy hike, which guide materials did not prepare us for.

Interesting, unique walking trail. Its creepy, sad but interesting to see the remaining/abandoned building, road, part of the bridge, etc. Its remind us to be humble to the power of mother earth/nature. There is no fee but recommended that you donate as you wish.

Interesting place where you can look at the damages the volcano caused last time. It is all real so it is worth the little walk. If you are up to see the crater there is also a trail that will lead you there
Lim W — Google review
Definitely must see for those who like to see abandoned buildings etc. Not allowed to go in but can see pretty up close. Allow 20-30 min. Closes at 6pm. Also can go to nishiyana trail from here but will be longer.

Very interesting place to visit. Quiet, not many people go there. Great to see how they have put preventative measures in place for future disasters.

(Translated by Google) The Kinpira Disaster Relics Trail is short and in good condition. Along the way, buildings damaged by the 2000 eruption of Mt. Usu are preserved, including the old Yasuragi House and the old Sakuragaoka Community. The former is a business that opened a year before the eruption and was destroyed by the volcanic eruption. The mudslide at that time was more than one meter high. Please note that the trail will be closed at 4 pm. In addition, if you continue walking up the mountain on this trail, you will reach the Kinpira crater, where you can see a smaller crater lake. It is worth a visit, but the road condition is relatively primitive. The Museum of Irie-Takasago Shell Mound is a national historic site that was discovered in 1942 and later renovated into a park. It is located near Mount Usu and Uchiura Bay, offering insights into the late Jomon period. The Kaizuka Museum displays excavated cultural relics such as tools used by the Jomon people, providing an opportunity to learn about their way of life.
Excellent exhibits, with lots of pottery and bones. We were allowed to touch 3000 year old pottery shards in an experiential part of the museum.

(Translated by Google) I'm surprised that admission to such a power spot is free. The pottery known as Irie-style pottery is characterized by its wavy patterns made with rope. Imagine what life was like about 5,000 to 7,000 years ago by touching the excavated earthenware and Hokkaido-style polished stone first hand... I saw how tools and accessories were evolving little by little, and I was exposed to techniques that I would not be able to make even if I was told to make them today, and I truly felt that ``humans are amazing!'' Who came up with such a stylish and cute design? ♡ Admission to the museum is free, and the exhibits include pottery, clay figurines, bone artifacts, and burial goods, giving a glimpse into the prosperous lifestyle of the Jomon people. The area is well-maintained and cleaned daily, providing visitors with a relaxing spot to rest after exploring the lake.

I should give it 5 stars, but i can't forgive it for my lack of coordination. As I stepped in I couldn't really see where I was stepping, because it was getting dark and I had spectacles on. As I was thinking "this bath is very shallow" I took another step and went ass up. It turns out there is a little step that I hadn't seen, which was why it was so shallow. 🤦‍♂️😂😂 Anyway, it was a good excuse to buy a souvenir onsen towel from the vending machine. I think it would have been a great spot to watch the fireworks from too, but i went further down the boardwalk. Highly recommended, but watch your step. 😜

A little further offshore, we were told it was 90 meters deep. We tossed in the pebbles we were given and felt the depth. It was my first canoeing experience, and I felt the urge to spend the whole day relaxing in the canoe. Our instructor said the waves were calm today, but that canoeing would be dangerous if the wind created whitecaps. Indeed, Lake Toya is surrounded by windbreaks, making it difficult for the wind to pass through. I imagine it would get rough when the wind blows. The surface of the lake was very calm, and it was a luxurious time as the three of us had the mirror-like surface to ourselves. The clarity was excellent, and I was able to spend a peaceful 90 minutes enjoying the beauty of Lake Toya, which was just beginning to change color in the autumn leaves. I didn't get particularly wet and was able to participate while carrying my single-lens reflex camera. The guide will also take photos for you, so you can leave some wonderful memories. I don't know if it's okay to use his name, so I'll just use his initials, but our guide, Mr. O, seemed interesting and approachable even before the experience started, which was great! During the experience, they took lots of photos, told interesting stories, and talked about things so that there were no barriers between participants, which made the experience even more fun! Since it was a sunny day, I also wrote things that would not apply on rainy or cloudy days. The weather that day was sunny, there was no wind, and Lake Toya was clear and green. When I put my hands and feet on top of the canoe, it felt cool and comfortable. I do have some regrets, wishing I could have played it more, maybe two hours longer, but I'll just keep it as something to look forward to when I do it again. On the website and in the email after I applied, there were a lot of things about getting wet and things to bring, but don't worry, unless it's raining, you won't get wet unless you put your hands or feet in the lake. I think it's a good idea to wear shorts, suteteko, rirako, or pants with easy-to-roll-up hems to make it easier to put your feet in the water. The sun can be bright on sunny days, so it's a good idea to wear a hat and sunglasses. In addition, the trail can be extended to the 1977 Volcano Relics Park. If you are interested, you can walk there. The Forty-Three Mountain Trail can be completed slowly in about an hour. Nestled in a quiet alleyway just off the bustling Dotonbori district, Hozenji is an intimate Buddhist temple that offers a serene escape from the surrounding noise and commercial activity. The temple is adorned with lanterns and features a moss-covered statue of Fudomyoo, the deity of protection. Visitors can offer prayers for safe travels before strolling down Hozenji Yokocho, a historic cobbled street lined with izakayas.
I didn’t plan to visit, just happened to walk by after a meal nearby, and I’m so glad I did! There were three adorable cats around, awwww! The shrine itself is super cool. The god statue is covered in grass and moss, he's called "不动明王", and you can pray by pouring water over him. It’s such a peaceful and special spot tucked away inside the busy commercial streets, full of rich Japanese culture. I absolutely loved it!

Very traditional, open, and interesting! Please make sure that you put your offering before you light up the incense and candle. And also the water by the shrine used to be put onto them not for the hands.

Before leaving the area, we stopped by Hōzen-ji Temple, a small but historic Buddhist temple tucked away in the middle of Dotonbori. Dating back to 1637, it’s famous for its moss-covered statue of Fudō Myō-ō, a guardian deity said to grant wishes. Visitors pour water over the statue when they pray, which is why it’s completely coated in green moss. The narrow alley leading to the temple, Hōzenji Yokocho, felt worlds away from the busy streets nearby—quiet, atmospheric, and lined with lanterns. I got a goshuin here too, a nice little memento from such an unexpected hidden gem in the middle of the city.
Jacob S — Google review
Hōzen-ji is a small yet profoundly calming sanctuary—an intimate spiritual corner quietly preserved in the heart of Osaka’s vibrant streets. Despite being surrounded by the energetic pace of Namba and Dōtonbori, the moment you step onto its stone pathway, the world seems to soften. The worn stone tiles, the wooden structures, and the rows of lanterns create a scene that feels timeless, intimate, and gently illuminated. The temple may be compact, but its atmosphere is rich with layers of tradition. Visitors pause before the incense burner, hands clasped, as thin streams of smoke rise softly into the cool air—mingling with the subtle scent of wood and the faint moisture of the day. Whether it’s travelers in kimono, nearby residents, or wandering tourists, everyone naturally slows down here, offering a quiet prayer or simply enjoying a brief moment of reflection. What stands out the most is how time feels a beat slower within these grounds. Outside are tall buildings, cables, and modern city textures; inside, the curved tiled roofs, wooden pillars, and clusters of lanterns preserve an older rhythm—gentle, enduring, and deeply resonant. The charm of Hōzen-ji doesn’t lie in grandeur, but in its ability to create genuine stillness in the center of a bustling city. It’s a place where Osaka’s soul reveals another side: not just lively and dynamic, but also warm, contemplative, and steeped in quiet history. Whether you come for a short pause during your stroll or specifically to offer incense and make a wish, Hōzen-ji welcomes you with sincerity. It is one of Namba’s most memorable hidden sanctuaries—small in size, yet immense in the peacefulness it brings.

A serene shrine tucked away in Dontonbori, though you’d never think it was with how peaceful this place is. It’s not a very big shrine, but it’s certainly gorgeous. In the center of the shrine is a moss-covered statue that guests can splash water on - doing so is said to give good luck.

If you're looking for a unique experience at Lake Toya, the '洞爺湖汽船' offers an unforgettable evening cruise that combines stunning natural beauty with a spectacular fireworks display. As you glide across the serene waters, you'll have the chance to explore Nakajima Island and enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. The highlight of your journey will be witnessing fireworks light up the night sky starting at 8:45 PM during summer months.
Bought the fire work viewing cruise voucher via kkday. Weather was good, we got to exchange the online vourchers for physical tickets at 7.30pm, boarded the boat at 8pm, set sail at 8.30pm. There’s a sign inside the boat for the direction of fireworks to look out for too. Simple fireworks but overall nice experience for our family😊

pretty nice boat ride - with good views of the mountains If coming during winter season, you’ll be treated to a view of a nice white snowy mountain. Along the dock there’s also a natural footpath you can try! Recommend!

Expensive at 1600 yen for the cruise. It’s quite short, at about 45 minutes end to end. There is a small shop inside the boat selling coffee, ice cream cones and and snacks. A lot of seagulls follow the boat, in the hope of getting some snacks from the passengers. They are quite aggressive, so be very careful. There are many levels in the boat to explore. The seating area in the main level has tables for eating and resting.

They have coupons, but you HAVE TO print them out like we're in 90s still. I tried with it pulled on my phone and it didn't work. Use the ship fare coupon because the natural "museum" ticket price on the island is only ¥200. All the seats are in inconvenient places to see where the ship is going through the front of the ship because on the first floor there's a stage, so the chairs and tables are all pushed back. The second floor has the store in the area that would give the best view. I suggest pulling up a chair as close to the stage as possible and sitting there. I don't understand why Japanese people need smoking sections on the inside ON A BOAT! It doesn't move that fast! Sure it has a own door to the outside, but it's also connected to the inside through an open staircase. Y'all have a serious problem; I really hope the indoor smoking ban goes through! They have umbrellas you can borrow for waddling around the island which is nice.

Had a great cruise experience with this operator, nice boat and the guiding was delivered throughout the trip. Only unpleasant thing was that of the tourist groups... unstopped photographs, gulls feeding and loud chatting...

Ticket price a bit high. The price is partly for the fireworks at night. I went May and fireworks start at 8:45pm. I ride the boat to the Nakajima and hike around the island. The boat at night will ride along the lake from the west to the east. and firework follow around the boat. The view of firework from the lake is also beautiful. During evening ride, bring some bread or food for the seagull.

This park has an incredible array of fall colors to enjoy in late October. There are 3 major sculptures to visit and many more beautiful locations to take personal photographs with friends. Right now the kids playgrounds are all roped off and covered with tarps, probably to prevent the spread of corona. They didn't seem to be in bad condition. Also the garden area is also not in season for blooms, but the fall leaves are stunning all around and there are many benches under wisteria bushes that look really promising for the spring. The park is really easy to access and park at off of the highway, and you can see the mountains really well across the water. Really worth your time to stop and visit on your way in or out of town!

The occasional cloud blows in from the mountains and veils everything is a misty shroud before the sun breaks through again. Walking a little further along the park in the direction away from Toya Onsen brings you to a charming little island that is home to some ducks who launch into the water on your approach. The sound of birdsong and the lapping waves on the shores are lulling and relaxing.

The walking path at the southern exit of the 西山山麓火口散策路 (Xishan Mountain Crater Trail) offers stunning scenery compared to its northern counterpart. While most visitors start from the north entrance and turn back at the crater, taking the south entrance allows for an easier return journey. Along this route, one can explore notable landmarks such as the kindergarten, candy factory ruins, and ultimately reach the crater.
(Translated by Google) I found a post on Google Maps that said [it is recommended to go from the south exit] because you have to make a U-turn and come back here instead of going around the circuit, so I decided to go from the south exit! I took my parents, who are 90 and 85 years old, so I went from the south exit and it was a great decision! Even though we started the tour from the south exit, the road from the kindergarten was quite an uphill climb, so it was not an easy road. We will continue with many breaks along the way! The road is very well maintained, so you won't have to climb over any big steps, so if you take your time, you'll be able to see the magnificence of the eruption. There was a lot of climbing on the way up, but after a U-turn, it was all downhill, so even my older parents were able to get down slowly! It's been 23 years since the eruption, but you can still see the severity of the eruption vividly, so if you have time, we highly recommend it! (Translated by Google) After seeing the crater of Mt. Konpira, I took a stroll from the north exit. Perhaps the south exit would have been better. I decided to stroll around because I heard that the area still retains the same scenery from the 2000 eruption. However, it was very hot and tiring that day. However! Seeing the remains of the national highway, where lava flowed, fallen utility poles, road signs, and damage to a candy factory, cars, and kindergarten, I was convinced that nature has an undeniable power. Thinking back on that time is hard to put into words, but I heard that most people had evacuated... I imagine it must have been very difficult and painful. It reminded me that everyday life is not something to be taken for granted. A stroll from the south exit is a round trip. A stroll from the north exit is a round trip. There are all the things you can't see unless you stroll, so I have no regrets. There was an observation deck along the way, and the view of Uchiura Bay and Lake Toya from the observation deck was amazing. I imagine it must have been hard work for the people who prepared the area for strolling. Sneakers are a must! You can't afford to get injured while walking around and cause trouble for the Toya Fire Department. I think it's better to think of it as mountain climbing rather than a walk. I hope there won't be another eruption. Interesting geological feature with a signboard to explain the natural causes. There is an iconic shrine. You would have to navigate some stones to reach from the shore. There is parking just nearby. You will likely spend about 20 minutes here.

Unique. We visited during rain, we had the place to ourself. A short walk over step stones (inside the lake) to the temple.

Not much to do in the area from what I could see. Would be a great picnic spot though! The setting is very calming and it wasn’t that busy on a Sunday in early spring after the snow had melted.
Dan H — Google review
We came here in the first week of November and the weather is getting cooler. It was nice. This is the top sightseeing spot that we visited that day. The temple in the middle of the lake is very unique. And the autumn leaves and trees in the area had added accent to the lake and the temple. It was beautiful indeed.

The view is nice. U can have a clear view of the lake with the pagoda there. It’s windy so bring ur jacket. Might be able to see the swan there too ~ There’s a big car park next to it. So parking shouldn’t be an issue.

Takasago Park, situated in Takasago-cho, Toyako-cho, can be easily accessed from Route 37. The park boasts a variety of amenities such as swings, untei (Japanese-style pavilion), slides, playground equipment with swings, Tsukiyama (artificial hill), and toilets. This spacious and secure park is an ideal location for spending quality time with grandchildren or engaging in outdoor activities like playing soccer with a rubber ball.
Really good place especially during spring to relax and watching flower.

I think it will be easier to take early evacuation action because you can quickly detect the approach of someone who looks like a suspicious person. Great little hike that includes an interesting historical element (learning about the volcanic eruption and the damage it caused) along with some really stunning views of the lake. Highly recommend - especially if you are in Lake Toya without a car.

Really cool to see as you follow the trail! I would really just recommend taking a photo of the map though - we went too far and the signs along the way were not very good. If you reach #7 you've gone too far!!!

My family and I who are tourists visited the vantage point from where we could see this crater "in all its glory." And as bonus, the said vantage point is also where you can have a magnificent view of Lake Toya and the resort town of Toyako Onsen. By the way, my family and I made our way to the vantage point by 4x4.

Easy 15-20 min hike, nice as a side quest after visiting the 2000 eruption memorial ground. Not much to see, nice little pond that you can't approach, but that is about it. Very little place at the top so not suitable for lunch break / rest stop.

There is free parking at the bottom of the hill. It is a 800m walk up hill. There is a ¥1,000 entrance fee - 1-5 persons. If it is hot or you rush for time, you can drive up but it is an additional ¥1,000 per car. Can get near to the Ari-kun crater but it is a good experience and a good view down onto Lake Toya
