Lake Okutama is a picturesque man-made reservoir nestled amidst the stunning mountains and verdant forests of Chichibu Tama National Park, making it a popular day trip destination from Tokyo. The area offers various activities such as hiking trails, scenic overlooks, and an information center known as 'Yama-no-Furusato Mura.' Visitors can enjoy camping facilities, log cabins, BBQs, guided hiking tours, and workshops for crafting activities.
We went car camping to stargaze and then woke up early to wait the sunrise, then enjoyed some swan boating on the lake. It was a great way to enjoy the beautiful weather with family.

Nice dam lake with the beautiful views surrounding the lake with the bridges.
Jeck L — Google review
I visited this place on 29 Nov 2024. There were very few tourists. Traveling here is quite limited if you don’t drive, as the area is quite vast. However, there are buses available. I love this place; it’s more beautiful than I could have imagined. But it takes quite a long time to get here and requires several transfers. If you have time, finding accommodation nearby would make the trip less tiring.
Gingger — Google review
Oct. 14, 2024 2nd monday of October. Sports day. From the parking with the toilet head to the dam Cross to the other side, and in the middle of the bridge, there's observatory. Don't miss it! It's worth going to see the dam structure and miniature.
Miyuu — Google review
It is a beautiful lake accessible by train and bus from central Tokyo in about 2.5h. The lake has a serene atmosphere which is very soothing after experiencing busy Tokyo.
Warre Y — Google review
I came here by bus from Okutama JR station. I stopped at Lake Okutama “奥多摩湖”. Firstly, I surprised about the big lake and it’s beautiful deep blue color. Then I climbed the observatory to see the whole scene of the Lake, the Ogouchi dam, the mountains. It was a bit scary to look down from the window but it was a great view. There is a good atmosphere and a beautiful nature here. I was healed so much from my busy days.
Flymt2moon — Google review
Definitely an must visit place if you are Japan. One of the beautiful places I visited. Prefered time to visit is autumn. You can get busses from Okutama station to Lake Okutama. The journey with mountains valleys and autumn colours will be amazing to see. Get down at the dam and spend sometime there. But the real view comes later take the bus from the dam again and get down at Ideno bus stop. This place seems like no where but if you walk a little 100m from the bus stop you can find a opening that will lead you down hill and directly to the bank of the lake. You can get the best view of Lake and the surrounding mountains from here. It was stony and dangerous but also exciting and thrilling.

Explore the Nippara Limestone Caves, the largest cave in the Kanto area, for a mesmerizing 40-minute, 800-meter journey through an enigmatic maze. Admire impressive stalagmites and discover scattered Buddha statues within the tunnels. The colorful LED lights add to the magical atmosphere of this underground wonderland. Escape the summer heat as you delve 800 meters underground into a refreshing 11°C environment and marvel at centuries-old limestone formations.
Very interesting! Never been in a place like this before, and I loved it! It was very cool inside- almost cold!! (11 degrees Celsius?!?) It’s very damp inside and water does drip on you, but I found it pleasant. It takes about 30 to 60 minutes to really enjoy the inside, and maybe another 20-30 minutes outside. Highly recommended for people of all ages- especially children and families, and anyone looking for a unique and natural experience. There are a lot of stairs and places where you have to duck down, so it might not be appropriate for people who have mobility issues.
Andrew O — Google review
This expansive, beautifully winding limestone cave seems popular with young Japanese couples and friend groups for dates and outings. The cave itself is impressively deep with stunning geological formations and refreshingly cool air that provides relief from outside heat. However, getting there is genuinely terrifying. The access road is single-lane both ways, forcing cars to back toward cliff edges when meeting oncoming traffic. Most incredibly, regular buses navigate this route multiple times daily - I cannot fathom how drivers manage this, especially during rain or fog when visibility drops to zero due to mist. The bus drivers deserve serious respect for their skill and courage. If you can handle the nerve-wracking journey and brief moments wondering if the cave might collapse, you’ll be rewarded with a spectacular natural wonder. Just be prepared for white-knuckle driving and quick cave visits due to the challenging access.
Minwoo K — Google review
Really enjoyed exploring the Nippara Limestone Caves with my guide, Ayumu. It was one of the highlights of my trip. Be warned! The temperature within the caves drop down to 10 degrees (this was during Summer time and I was looking at the thermometer inside the caves drop down). It’s best to bring a jacket. The cave inside has lots of twist and turns with some small openings, so be careful when walking up the stairs (you might bump your head). Inside, it’s quite a sight to behold and very tranquil.
Lok F — Google review
A cool cave system to explore. It’s quite cold (around 5-10 Celsius) so bring a jacket. Though you might build up a sweat since there are SO MANY stairs to climb around the cave. And these stairs are very steep and slippery, so you have to tread carefully. Make sure to bring a jacket and a pair of non-slip shoes. As for things to see around the cave - there are a few shrines, large caverns, and stalactites and stalagmites to view. I’m not particularly interested in these things, but it was an experience to visit once. My boyfriend who really loves nature loved this though. Regarding facilities, they are well-developed. There are restrooms, a small store/restaurant, and even a smoking area. Once we bought tickets, they also gave us some themed bookmarks. If you’re in the Okutama area, I think this would be worthwhile to see. I don’t think it’d be worth it to come to the area just for this spot though. It is quite difficult to get here (45min bus ride from Okutama station that only has a few runs per day)
Elizabeth T — Google review
This was a fun and unique experience on my trip to Japan. The drive here was scenic and exciting- full of winding, narrow mountain roads and amazing views. The entire cave system is lit, but I recommend bringing your own headlamp so that you can peek around unlit crevices. My friend once found an old 1960s Fanta can. He brought it home but later thought that it had bad energy as he was having nightmares and night sickness which ended as soon as he got rid of the can. I believe him because this place is quite eerie. There is a shrine in the back full of small piles of stones that were assembled by grieving parents and which allegedly hold the souls of their lost babies and fetuses. The legend says that these souls are here as punishment for the pain that they caused their parents. There is also a deep section of the cave called "Hell's crevice," and there was a miniature shrine building labeled "the black gate" down in that section. If you don't know any of this, then you can just stroll through the caves with the only impediment being the many stairs and the bats - some of the bats are lurking in tight spaces where they could be close to your head. But if you do know all of this information, then there's an extra layer of eeriness about the caves and you find yourself imagining what you would do if the power went out. Thankfully I had the headlamp lol. Price was very affordable, you will probably spend more on gas getting here if you drive than you do on the admission. The cave only took 1 hour to explore, so we also visited some local hiking trails, the local gorge and canyon, and a local onsen.
Oliver W — Google review
It's extremely lovely. Please highly recommended to visit, especially for the people who love old caves. 7000 years old. Moreover, it's kind of cold inside 11 degrees, and good pictures can be taken inside and along the way to the caves.
Amro M — Google review
One of the highlights of the Okutama area, the Nippara Limestone cave is huge and fascinating except that there are no signs or descriptions in English so you do not know what you are looking at. We went on a weekday so it is not crowded at all. (although there is a huge 200 lot car park nearby so I would assume it gets very crowded in the weekends)
Kee H — Google review
The cave with nice illumination..... although it's a bit tough for climbing up at the almost vertical staircase to the new cave.

Hikawa International Trout Fishing Area is a managed fishing spot located near Moegi-no-Yu, downstream of the Nippara River. It's about a five-minute walk from Okutama Station and offers recreational fishing on a flat riverbank. Visitors can rent equipment on-site and enjoy an outdoor BBQ area to grill their catch. The area provides opportunities for trout fishing using various methods such as rod, speed, or even hands-on techniques.
Had a great time coming here to experience fishing for the first time! Staff and the other locals were kind enough to show me how to fish and unhook the fish. Spent a few hours learning, catching, eating and just enjoying the scenery of the site. The caught fish tasted fantastic fresh off the grill. Not too crowded in the morning, but the day pass will be higher price, if you come in the afternoon I believe you will be paying almost half price for day pass. I also rented rod and bought some bait, fee for your fish being cooked is pretty low from memory(100-300 yen per fish?) so I ate my money's worth.
Stanley L — Google review
Got there around 11 am. Available parking even though there were tons of people. We were able to catch 5 trouts and had them grill them for us. Slightly pricey for what it is as they’re not wild but more thrown into a pond. You can bbq and picnic freely. We had fun.
Roy M — Google review
Great place to visit near tokyo in about 2 hours distance to the location. Locates 10 minutes walk from okutama station . Good environment with not so costly price . You can lend fishing goods there and can take home all the fishes you caught as well.
Itsme A — Google review
It's nice but overcrowded! My kids had fun fishing and eating the fish we caught.
Angela — Google review
Really nice fishing area, you can rent all the stuff here and BBQ here as well. Feels colder because of the river so dress appropriately. On the website they mention that you can get fish cleaned professionally, but I didn't see that service, I had to clean by myself. The prices are a bit on the high side, I feel the afternoon only pass is more worth it
Dash — Google review
Literally a walk from the end of the rail line. Here you can walk from the station and for a few catch your meal. The fish are stocked, the choice is live or artificial bait. The hidden gem is the restaurant, great curry, great view, relaxed atmosphere. Highly recommended even if you don't fish.
Ted D — Google review
The restaurant in the place is idyllic with ok food. The fishing area feels like a scam - they charge you 1,700 yen for basic rods and then charge for each person separately as well as for the bait. The fishery organizer was quite rude - he refused to sell rods and tickets separately to us as we were two families. Also, the fish are about 15cm long (6 inches) and released only when you pay. Many do not catch fish at all. Nice for kids but not a good experience overall except for the restaurant. There are also a lot better fisheries.
Lari H — Google review
Fantastic trout fishing experience. They refill the area with trout to make sure that people have something to catch. It's a nice surprise if you are able to catch the mountain trout that are naturally there - not the ones they release into the water. It's better to focus on fishing earlier in the morning when the fish bite more so you can have more catch, and start grilling them early afternoon. They only accept cash and paypay so make sure you have either ready.

Mountain peak
Mount Kumotori, standing at 2,017 meters, is a forested mountain that offers breathtaking panoramic views and hiking opportunities. The summit features a hut for visitors to rest and camping options are available as well. Mitsumine Shrine serves as both a famous power spot and the gateway to hiking Mount Kumotori. The park also includes other peaks such as Mount Kinpu and Mount Kobushi in the Oku-Chichibu massif.
I have been there in the winter with my friend. It was a little bit tough in the snow. Be sure to carry aizen, enough food and water. It is necessary in the winter, bring them or you would regret. We climbed from 8AM to 7PM to the lodge near the top, so we could see sunrise in the next morning. The scene is great as you can see. The lodge was reasonable and comfortable. Breakfast is simple but delicious. Always hope to be there again since then!!!

11-Feb-2025 #intothewild At the Top of Tokyo: Mount Kumotori (2017.1m) 🥾🧗‍♀️🏔️ This is highest point of Tokyo and route easy but very long. We started our hike from Mitsumine Shrine around 11AM and arrived at Kumotori sanso at 6PM. For hikers, we suggest to arrive at least before 4PM. We stayed at Kumotori sanso. Next day we started at 6AM and sun was already on horizon. It took 1hr to reach the peak of Mt Kumotori. It was windy and cold in peak so we only stayed couple of minutes there. For about an hour we stayed in emergency shelter near peak. The shelter is well established with toilets too but no water. We enjoyed breakfast in shelter with beautiful view from there. Around 8:30 we descended to Okutama. Always wanted to do winter hike, and on this special occasion of my birthday we embark for this challenge. It was also the birthplace of one my favorite anime Kamado Tanjiro (Demon Slayer)🥷 It was tough and memorable days with my beautiful wife❤️
Rahul B — Google review
Standing at 2,017 meters, Mt. Kumotori is the tallest mountain in Tokyo Prefecture—and a 2-day, 1-night climb that's well worth the effort. We hiked on a Monday and had the trail mostly to ourselves (only five guests stayed at the lodge that night, including us). In June, the insects are relentless—no amount of repellent will fully keep them away. A face net is your best defense, along with light-colored clothing. We started our hike at 10:30 AM and reached the lodge around 3:30 PM, including a 40-minute break to take shelter from the rain. Just follow the trail signs and use Google Translate when needed. However some of the signages cannot be read but we were very lucky to bump into climbers coming down which were able to point us the direction (there is just 1 part of the trail midway which is confusing and a wrong turn will lead you back down the mountain on the other side.)
Kee H — Google review
Took me 8.5 hours to get to the top and to get back. If you are a slower hiker, it is better to take the first bus. Otherwise it will be too dark for you to come back....alive.
LING C — Google review
Totally recommend warming up by starting from a breakfast spot on the lake level. I dropped 1 stop before Kamosawa and ate my bread on the Tozura floating bridge. The approach to the parking lot was fairly easy to find. At the end of October, this route saw more traffic as my wife said it was some holiday period in Japan. Everyone was friendly on the trail, I lost track of the number of greetings I said up the forest tracks. Interestingly, there were a few water spring spots along the hike in the forest and the approach after the Nanatsuishi hut. I would pretend these had extra minerals and chug them sparingly from my bottle till the end of my hike. This year (2023) also saw more bear sightings according to the news, and my mother in law packed a rusty bear bell for me carry, though the 'ching ching' does sounds like dinner bells to my ears. Once you ascended Nanatsuishi, you can see Kumotori in the distant cloudy tree tops. Tracing the top of the ridge would bring you past a helipad and up rocky zig zags slopes before finally seeing the shelter hut at the top. Foolishly, I chose the dark descent to Sanjo no Yu which was my hut, and the next hour saw a desolated, quiet descent which saw a few huge animals rustling away from the chingaling bells from my hips. I saw glimpses of 2 deers and 1 white animal which I believe to be a goat. Overall I loved the climb despite the complaints from my thighs and feet.
Yitzhak K — Google review
A very long trek to the top from Kamosawa bus stop. Easy to climb except for some steep sections near the top. A very good experience that also included encounters with deer, monkey and a cat at the Mt. Nanatsu cabin. The trek itself is easy but feels difficult due to the long and unending trail to the top. I covered 24 km. in a single day starting at 0758 in the morning and finished at 1845 in the evening. I do not recommend a day trip to this mountain but if you want to make sure to reach the trailhead by 0600 in the morning(only possible by car/taxi), or take the 0534 bus from Okutama station that will drop you near the trailhead at 0608.
Vinayak B — Google review
Great mountain! A bit snowy during the winter, but still beautiful views. When I had visited, a local had offered to let me stay a night in his home in fear of the mythical oni that roamed at night. I had declined at first, but he insisted. The next morning, I kept venturing up the mountain until a foul smell hit my nose, and from there I decided to turn back. Other than that, great experience!
Henry L — Google review
Amazing view of Mt Fuji and Minami Alpes. For hiking is great. It’s not a hard trail, just some steep parts, however it is long one, around 10 km until the top. There’s a place to sleep, bring your sleeping bag.

Moegi no Yu Onsen is a natural hot spring located just a short walk from Okutama Station. The hot spring offers both indoor and outdoor baths, allowing visitors to relax while enjoying picturesque views of the surrounding mountains and the Tamagawa River. The water, sourced from one of Japan's oldest rock strata, is known for its healing properties, containing metaboric acid and fluorine which are said to soothe various ailments such as neuralgia, muscle and joint pain.
We just had our dinner here. Everything we tried was perfectly delicious. The cafeteria is nice and clean. And you can just go there to dine without having to go to the spa just like we did.
Jocelyn D — Google review
After two days of climbing Mt. Kumotori without a shower, this Onsen feels like pure heaven. Just a short drive from Kamosawa, it’s clean, modern, and newly built. Towels aren’t available for rent, so either bring your own or be prepared to buy one on-site. The food is also surprisingly delicious—a perfect way to end the hike. There is a small footbath area for 100Yen next to the onsen.
Kee H — Google review
This was a very relaxing, cozy, clean establishment. You should bring your own towels, they do not rent towels here. They do sell them, but that doubles the cost. The tubs are very small, but it was not too busy when I was here so it was fine. They do not seem to have a problem with tattoos here. I enjoyed the cafe and gift shop upstairs.
Oliver W — Google review
When here for lunch with a few friends and the food is great. They sell fresh wasabi products on the 2nd floor. They have a good foot-bath as well
Liam M — Google review
Great onsen experience after a hike. The staff were friendly, the facilities were nice and clean, the price was reasonable. The outside area for the male section was great to relax and listen to the nearby river too.
Finlay M — Google review
Very scenic and easily accessible. The facility is nice, clean and well kept. It has both an indoor and an open outdoor hot spring. The place has nice views and offers a relaxing opportunity after hiking or and the end of a camping expedition.
TAHIR C — Google review
Onsen just next to the Hikawa Camp Site ⛺. For ¥1,250 / person, you can try the onsen with tree views for both indoor with jacuzzi style and outdoor bath (there are only 2 baths). Heading to the restaurant upstairs or try the chair massage for more relaxation.
M P — Google review
Nice location, lovely staff, and large gift shop/dining area. Only three stars, because overall it’s not worth the price. There are only two large baths: one inside and one outside. They are peaceful and refreshing, but feel crowded. No individual tubs like other onsens, and limited counter space to get ready after. It’ll do if you’re in the area, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to check it out.

Mountains
Mount Mitake is a popular destination for nature lovers and hikers, located just a 1-2 hour drive or train ride from central Tokyo. The area offers stunning views of lush greenery and surrounding mountains. Visitors can take a funicular or hike to the peak, where they'll find the Musashi Mitake Shrine dedicated to a white wolf deity. The mountain is part of the Chichibu-Tama-Kai National Park, featuring walking trails, waterfalls, and scenic landscapes.
Very nice hike suitable for beginners! You can drive all the way up to the cable car because there’s a convenient parking lot. Kei cars might have some trouble driving to the top because it’s very steep lol be careful on icy days there’s lots of signs warning of slipping!
Akira — Google review
A wonderful hike up Mt. Mitake to visit the temple at the summit. Start by taking the ropeway up, then head to the tourist information counter to pick up maps and details about the trail. Be sure to visit the Rock Garden—it's a highlight of the hike. There's also a large rock you can climb for a bit of fun. The round trip takes about two hours.
Kee H — Google review
It's a pretty awesome place to hike. Easy for beginners. You can take a bus right outside Mitake station, turn left, cross the road, and turn left. Or just ask the visitor centre and ask for a map.The bus is scheduled, so do take note of the time. Once you board the bus, it will take you all the way to near the cable car. You will need to walk uphill for 5 mins to reach the cable car station. Once there, I suggest you take note of the cable car timing to prepare the time to descent. After exiting the cable car station, you will need to walk for abt 10 min on a stretch of road to reach the town. To even reach the start of the walk to the shrine, you will need to cont uphill inside the town. Those who are planning for the Nanayo waterfall, you will need to go to near the shrine, and turn left, follow the sign board. Overall, you can walk 1 loop to the nanayo waterfall> rock garden> ayahiro fall> cedar trees> shrine. Spent a total of 2.5 hr or less for the route. Its steep initially will downhills and slopes then slippery rocks and icey pathways w snow, followed by gentle path back to the shrine.
Chrystabel G — Google review
I can really recommend Mount Mitake as a day trip from Tokyo. Breathtaking views. Just remember that if you take the last cable car down from the mountain you will miss the last bus to Mitake train station :)
Alfred H — Google review
Great hiking and shrines to visit Cable car is ¥600 one way saves 1 hour on foot, but the beautiful forest is worth the walk with all their sacred old trees
Jordan D — Google review
Anyone can easily reach the summit by taking the mountain train. The streets near the summit were old-fashioned and interesting. It is not that crowded, so you can take your time to explore the nature.
Rintaro — Google review
I climbed here by using Senzoku trail to first summit Odake and after Odake, Mitake felt like heaven by how easy it was to get on top and go back down.
Mert K — Google review
Easily accessible by train. Good for a day trip outing. Can take the Cable cart too. Need to walk a bit to reach the Nanayo waterfall. There is a place mentioned as Rock Garden but actually there is no specific Garden such as instead the route to Ayahiro waterfall is surrounded by rocks and the water stream in between that is the Rock Garden.

Sake brewery
Sawanoi - Ozawa brewery, with a history spanning over 300 years, offers an immersive experience into the culture and production process of Japan's renowned sake. Nestled in the scenic Okutama region of Tokyo Prefecture, this brewery boasts a sprawling garden overlooking the Tama River. Visitors can savor bowls of noodles and sake tasting sets amidst the serene natural surroundings. While tours are currently conducted only in Japanese, prior reservations through their website are necessary.
I visited here as part of a private tour and really enjoyed the experience. It was very interesting to learn the history of the building and family as well as the production methods. I was very interested to learn about the “ball” which is hung outside that gradually changes from green to brown over the year. I would love to see the start of the season! It was also interesting to understand the changes made following the reclassifying of “sake” and how this now impacts the brewery. It was a very enjoyable time.

The Ozawa Brewery located off Route 411 in Ome. The tour was quick and only lead us through limited parts of the brewery. There was literature in English but the tour was exclusively in Japanese. The tour was okay but you might look elsewhere if you want to see more facets of sake brewing. You can make reservations of the tour over the internet.

We tried all 10 sake at the brewery and they were all good! Unfortunately, the tour is only delivered in Japanese. They will provide the pamphlet in English but you’ll have to figure out which part they are sharing.

Great sake in a great location. Lovely garden area on the river serving sake, sake snacks, and other café items. Across the bridge there is a temple which you can climb to see some view other views of the river. Very close to the train station and available for tours.

Highly recommend! My husband took me here for Mother's day and it was beautiful. I could spend the whole day here. We couldn't get a tour because they were all booked but my husband went on the tour a few months back and loved it. The sake was delicious, my husband and I bought a bottle of the #2. Even if you don't drink sake it is worth a day trip. There is a cafe with coffee, cake and other food/ snack options. A bridge and a bell, and shrine. You can tip your toes in the cold river on a hot day. So beautiful that it shouldn't be missed.

This sake brewery is located in a beautiful mountain region of Japan. A terrific place for a memorable day trip out of Tokyo. The sake is excellent and there a shop that offers samples and bottles for purchase. There are a number of restaurants clustered in a wooded area by the river. They also offer a brewery tour but be sure to get tickets ahead of time. This is a popular place for hikers and nature lovers as well as folks out for good food and drinks. It can get a little crowded on weekends and holidays but is still a terrific place to visit to enjoy sake and food in a beautiful nature setting.

It was a very lovely afternoon excursion outa city. Arrived with plenty time to enjoyed yummy lunch at the cafe by the river and joined in on the 2pm free brewery tour. Their free tour is in Japanese but you can pick up an English pamphlet that gives you detailed info about the brewery and the process of making Sake. Plus there‘a often other English speaking tours (with their Japanese guides)part of the brewery tour so you can get quite a bit from that too. The tour was short and sweet and then the fun began… We tried 4 different types of sake and they were all very yummy.. we spent time in the tasting room enjoyed our drinks. You get to keep those very beautiful cups too. They made it back home safely. Definitely a worth day/half day outing choice.

Wasn't able to schedule the tour but the sake tasting was great. What's not to like about being able to sample as much as you like shots of sake for around ( $.067 ) a shot. It was great to sample in one sitting may different styles and actually taste the differences. They required a phone call (japanese ) to make a tour reservation and I never had the hotel call for me.

Mugiyama Floating Bridge is a captivating sight as it winds its way across the serene waters of Lake Okutama, providing pedestrians with access to the base of Mt. Mito. Situated near Ogouchi Shrine, this tranquil place of worship replaced several shrines that were displaced during the construction of Lake Okutama. Accessible by a 30-minute bus ride from Okutama Station, visitors can enjoy a leisurely stroll from Ogouchi Shrine to reach the bridge.
Beautiful area with scenic views. Some very nice paths to walk around the lake as well.

Don't confuse the other Mugiyama Bridge (normal bridge) with this Floating Bridge - there is only one Looks nice, not as impressive as in photos and you definitely cannot walk across it because it's not connected to the ends, you can't walk down the stairs either Right beside a highway Worth it if you're not tight on time and know the bus schedule well But otherwise Lake Okutama itself should be more worth it than this bridge alone 7-9min walk from the nearest bus station, bus 14 from Okutama Station but quite a long distance out

The peak of Gozenyama mountain can be reached by connecting hiking trails and offers breathtaking views from the top. The summit provides an excellent vantage point to take in the scenery. Along the way, hikers may come across a variety of flora such as clusters of stunning Japanese dogs tooth violet. While not too difficult, the hiking trail presents a moderate challenge for those seeking to reach the peak.

Very beautiful and calm place, after a long climbing. It is important to have enough water on you, there are no restrooms or water resources on the way, and it will take about 6 hours and a half depending on your speed and experience in climbing or hiking. Nature is amazing and relaxing, you can enjoy having a cup of coffee (bring your own, there is nothing) and snacks. Many bugs of all sizes are found in different birds and small animals. The place is so much quiet that we could hear the raindrops and bugs cry very clear. Not very recommend to take this root on rainy days, it is super steep and slippery, it would be a good idea to wear special boots and have hiking basic hiking tools if needed, but water is very important. You should also be careful of the bears especially close to the waterfall, it is better to go early as much as possible to avoid being in this area after 4 PM. Also, there are no vending machines on the top of the mountain. 😛

Nestled at an elevation of over 3,000 feet atop Mount Mitake in Tokyo's Ome City, Musashi Mitake Shrine is a historic red Shinto shrine accessible by a scenic cable car ride. The shrine boasts intricate murals, carvings, and statues, offering visitors a glimpse into ancient Japanese art and culture. Pilgrims can also experience traditional Japanese meals and accommodations at Higashibaba, which consists of buildings dating back 150 years.
A very beautiful shrine. Unfortunately it’s only open until 16:00 / 4PM. But you still can visit it after the hours. You just can’t go inside. The way to the shrine is also very beautiful with the lanterns.

Magical mountain shrine with breathtaking views and a sacred wolf guardian 🐺 If you’re looking for a spiritual escape just outside of Tokyo, Musashi Mitake Shrine is a hidden gem. Located at the summit of Mt. Mitake, this ancient Shinto shrine is known for its guardian deity — the wolf, revered as a protector against evil and disasters. It’s a rare and powerful symbol in Japanese mythology. The shrine is reachable by the Mitake Cable Car, which boasts the steepest incline in the Tokyo area — a fun and scenic ride up the mountain. From the cable car station, there’s a moderate hike of about 30–40 minutes, with some steep paths, but it’s a great workout surrounded by lush forest and fresh mountain air. The atmosphere at the top is peaceful, energizing, and spiritually refreshing. Whether you’re into hiking, history, or nature, this place offers a bit of everything. You’ll also find some beautiful torii gates, stone lanterns, and panoramic views along the way. Tip: Wear comfortable shoes, bring water, and try to go on a clear day to enjoy the views! Highly recommended for a day trip that connects culture, nature, and spiritual calm.

The cable car is 1200 yen round trip then a short hike to the shrine. The shrine is pretty big and there are stores and restaurants that are close to it on the mountain. Provides a beautiful view on a clear day. The path is nice and well maintained but be prepared for a steep hike.

Musashi Mitake Shrine, where a mythological wolf guided legendary warrior turned emperor Yamato Takeru to safety. Believe it or not, the air at 929 meters above sea level is fresh and climbing all these stairs is good for your blood pressure and calorie burn. In regular, non COVID times I saw some gift offering rituals in the back, more sacred area, but I’m not sure all of them are held today. It was also sad to see a lot of the shops and hotels struggling and either close permanently or temporarily. So if you’re a dog-person (or any pet) do yourself a favor, support small businesses, get your pet an omamori and stay healthy by visiting this amazing place.
Omri R — Google review
Perfect hike with your furry friend. Pets are welcome on the cable car going up to the shrine and may even be blessed at the temple.
Stephanie N — Google review
Get off at the Mitake train station. You can take the bus and cable car to get to the shrine. Or you can hike up the mountain. The shrine is pretty nice but there are lots of steps. It is not disabled friendly so be aware . There are many walking paths and photo opportunity spots all around. It's a great way to experience something just outside of Tokyo.

Hatonosu Canyon is a rugged gorge formed by the Tama River cutting through Chichibu Paleozoic strata. The canyon features walking trails, bridges, Shinto shrines, and hot spring hotels. Visitors can explore the Kori area before the suspension bridge or cross to the Shiromaru area, passing by the Shiromaru Dam.
A perfect summer escape... I came in mid-September (35°) on a Friday, and it wasn't busy at all. A few other people were scattered across the river, but it was easy to find a quiet spot to enjoy. The water is absolutely freezing, which I failed to anticipate, but don't let that stop you from swimming as letting the currents take you downstream is a fun experience. If you want to find the spot I went to all you have to do is cross the bridge and take a right, then after taking some steps down keep your eyes open to the righthand side for an opening that gives you a really nice view, from there scale down some rocks which was fairly easy and it should take you right down to a sandy part where you can relax😊
Therz — Google review
It’s a bit of a hike to reach the bottom of the canyon and explore the Tama River, but well worth the effort. We took the staircase next to Kikori Café to make our way down. The canyon is stunning—peaceful, scenic, and full of natural beauty.

Hatanosu Canyon – Perfect Autumn Escape 🍁 Just 2 hours from Tokyo, Hatanosu Canyon (鳩ノ巣渓谷) is a hidden gem for weekend treks or bike rides. Easy access, peaceful vibes, and cozy cafés — a perfect autumn day trip getaway! 🌿✨
Rajnish C — Google review
Another scenic area of the Tama River, Okutama area, this one is probably more rugged/jagged than other parts. There is a suspension bridge here which connects the 2 sides of the river/canyon and is a great spot for viewing autumn leaf colors. I went on November 25, 2025 and while it looks like the general area is past peak, this place still gave an impressive show. To get here from the Hatonosu train station, turn right after exiting, down the street to the main road, and continue to the street just before Hatonosu Tunnel. Continue down towards the parking lot and the way to the canyon is around the building (if you don't look at the area maps, it will appear that the way to the canyon is well hidden). The hiking is not that straightforward, rather difficult, and you have to be careful if it has been raining. Docked one star because of its hidden nature and that. Still, this is a good place for photos.

As you ride the train to Okutama, you'll see many people heading for hikes, even elderly folks, which is pretty impressive. There are different hiking spots to explore. We started at Hatonosu Station and walked to Okutama Station, around 10km, but it was totally worth it. The track is pretty easy and beginner-friendly. The path is calm and green, with lots of trees. The river water is clear, and some folks are fishing for rainbow trout. You can also try canoeing with a reservation, I think. Late November would be a great time to visit, when the trees turn a beautiful red.

(Translated by Google) I visited this dam on a drive during the long weekend. It's not a big dam, so I was able to look around like it was a light stroll. The parking lot is located high up, and the entrance to the fishway observation passage is right next to it, and the exit is at the same height as the dam, so it's more efficient to start by observing the fishway, as you'll have to go up and down fewer stairs. The fishway observation passage is free. The dam itself is easy to walk on, so you can enjoy seeing the sluice gates up close, and you can see the fishway from the dam. The fishway was quite fun, so I'd like to go again at a different time of year. You can descend a spiral staircase to the underground area where the fishway is located, and it is pleasantly cool when you reach the bottom. I recommend visiting this dam together with Ogouchi Dam further ahead. Dam cards are distributed at the Shiromaru Dam fishway near the dam. Normally they are only available on weekends and holidays, but during the summer vacation period they are also distributed on weekdays. Hyakuhiro-no-taki Falls is a breathtaking natural attraction located in Japan. The cascading waterfall plunges down from a great height, creating a mesmerizing spectacle for visitors. Surrounded by lush greenery and serene landscapes, the Hyakuhiro-no-taki Falls offers an immersive experience of nature's beauty. Its pristine waters flow into a tranquil pool at the bottom, making it an ideal spot for relaxation and contemplation.
An absolute must see for any experienced hiker. The approach hike is rather dangerous and is not for the feint of heart. The trails are all very well maintained and quite scenic all the way through. At the waterfall tranquility becomes all one can feel. It is such a spectacle!

Beautiful trail along the river with many unmarked waterfalls culminating in this big waterfall. At a leisurely pace it is about 2 hrs from the bus stop during ascent. Have good shoes which should not slip and are ideally waterproof. Trekking pole would be better but not mandatory.

Beautiful and chilled summer adventure – Hyakuhirono Falls From Okutama Station, take the bus from Platform 1 to Kawanori Bridge. From there, it’s about a 1–1.5 hour walk on a paved road, followed by a 40-minute hike on a forest trail (some parts are a bit steep). The waterfall itself is stunning, and we even enjoyed a refreshing swim there. Perfect spot to cool off in summer!

A wonderful museum near the Okutama Dam with a great view! It’s an excellent spot for sightseeing and even offers a virtual hiking experience using the museum’s facilities. You can also learn about the region and its culture in an engaging way. The cafeteria serves delicious food at reasonable prices. I had the curry udon, it was flavorful, the broth rich, and the noodles perfectly chewy. If you sit by the window, you can enjoy breathtaking scenery while eating. Best of all, admission to the museum is free! Highly recommended as a stop if you’re planning to go hiking or simply strolling around the Okutama Dam. They also have omiyage store, good for buying souvenirs or snacks.

It's such a nice forest not too far from the city centre of tokyo. I saw a snake but hesitated to pick it up, and it escaped(luckily so, as it turned out to be venomous). Very few people on the trail during weekdays, mostly seniors picking herbs or just taking a relaxing walk in the forests.

This is a bit far out but it was worth the trip. And even during golden week it wasn’t too crowded. Get there early for a good parking spot. The main lot fills up early but they do have another parking area nearby. They do provide free shuttle service between the venue and the parking area. As far as the forest itself there are plenty of trails to choose from and interesting things to see. You can see a beautiful view of Mount Fuji quite a ways up the mountain but you go even further up you can view more things. I stopped at the Fuji viewpoint cause I was tired. If you’re not used to it, this can be a challenge. They also have a shop for food and souvenirs. But check this place out if you have a chance. You don’t have to go too high to enjoy this place. They also have a bike rack if you want to ride here.

A beautiful and interesting forest of mixed trees including old beech trees, which are rare for the Kanto area. Accessibility is a factor in how appealing it will be for foreign visitors. There's a special rapid train on the Chuo Line that runs directly to Musashi-Itsukaichi station on weekends and holidays. Otherwise, transfer is required. From there, there is limited bus service to the forest -- only three buses in the a.m. But they run multiple buses to accommodate all the hikers April to November, so you're generally able to sit for the rather long and winding -- though scenic -- one-hour and about 900 yen ride. All those hikers seem to disappear somehow, though -- the trails are only moderately busy on big holidays and autumn leaf season. There are easy one-hour hikes and longer 4-5 hour moderately strenuous ones requiring proper footwear. At 1500 meters, it's also cooler and more prone to rain than Tokyo proper. There is a visitor center and two places to get food -- mostly typical noodles and curry. With a waterfall, various wildflowers and birds, a few good views, and fresh air, it's a nice place to experience nature if you're willing to put in the effort.
Aaron M — Google review
Located near the end of twisty Okutama road, the place serves as a rest area. They have a few shops, bus stops so that you can take a bus home if you wreck your car or bike :-) There're a couple of other parking along the way, and they would give you much more beautiful mountain and lake views, but they're much smaller and not paved.

Mitake and the Ootake Limestone Caves, it makes for an all-round weekend experience with a campground on-site.
Great challenging yet rewarding trail, I enjoyed it a lot. The hike took around 5 hours to finish including a lunch break on top We saw Fuji but for best views of it better to reach the top in the morning (before noon)

Great hike, 4hr 20mins in total. Certainly has some challenging parts where you are physically climbing/on all fours.

Definitely a tough trek for beginners, but should be no problem for experienced hikers and people who are otherwise active. Assume the standard route to the top, in either direction, will take anywhere from 3-5 hours depending on your pace and frequency of stops. Be cognizant of when the sun sets as portions of the hike are deep in the forest. It gets rather dim earlier than you might expect.
D. S — Google review
We started hiking from Okutama station and hopped on Mt. Nokogiri, Mt. Otake san and Mt. Mitake. It was quite an adventurous trek but beautiful views at Otake summit was worth taking some pains during the rough hiking areas. Some patches between Atago shrine to Nokogiri summit are specially challenging. Make sure you carry sufficient food and liquids are there is almost nothing until you reach Mitake.. Definitely a must try route!

The hike was scenic, not very difficult even now in February, but of course do not underestimate it especially when going down, it might be very slippery on the wet snow. There are passages with only a narrow path and a steep slope on the side but there are chains. I wasn t lucky with the weather, the view from the top was just milk all around:)...

Really good hike, and the beauty of Odake-san is that you can do a long or a short hike since there are a lot of trails. The terrain gets rocky and treacherous close to the top, so don't forget your hiking shoes.

Windy and rainy conditions when we went so couldn’t see much. It was super foggy when we were hiking too. The area surrounding the falls presents some challenges, including steep descents and slippery terrain, so sturdy footwear is essential. The falls are beautiful, with a stronger current than the close-by Ayahiro falls. However, the descent is very steep, and at several points there are tall steps to go down or roots and rocks making the terrain tricky without good shoes. Nestled in the western part of Tokyo, Mt. Kawanori offers a serene day hike away from the bustling city. Accessible via the Chuo Line from Shinjuku Station to Okutama, this hidden gem boasts steep forested slopes, streams, and waterfalls leading to a summit with breathtaking panoramic views. Unlike its busier neighbors, Mt. Kawanori provides a peaceful trek without temples or shrines but rewards hikers with sights of Hyakuhiro-no Falls.
Loved this hike. Started from the trailhead a short bus ride from Okutama and finished at Hotonosu station a little under 6 hours later. Stopped multiple times to capture the dynamic beauty up there! I took a short snack break also at the falls which was real nice. Today, January 27 2025, there was a little snow and ice up there, glad I brought crampons! This hike won’t pose too many challenges for most people, however, I wouldn’t attempt it with a hangover, lack of sleep or after heavy rainfall. You need your wits about you and your footwork on point. There are quite a few old log ladders built over some heart rate elevating drops! Also the pathway on ridges can be quite tight and covered with leaves etc. Other than that it’s just a glorious slog for a few hours to the top. I saw a pack of monkeys at the summit which was exciting, nerve wrackin! Probably good to wear sturdy boots as my trusty Salomon shoes were getting chopped up by the loose rocks everywhere.

This was the first hike of my life, and I absolutely loved it! The trail follows a river, and you can hear the sound of waterfalls along the way, which made it really refreshing and peaceful. The total hike took us about 6 hours and covered around 16 km, not including rest or lunch breaks. We went on a weekend, but it wasn’t crowded at all. I think this hike is great even for beginners. You can get there easily, just take a train to Okutama Station, then a short 15-minute bus ride to the starting point. There’s also a beautiful viewpoint along the way that’s worth stopping for. Highly recommend this place if you’re looking for a nature escape near Tokyo!

Peak of mountain is ok but path is just filled with greenery and river alongside the route. Enjoyable hiking experience. Recommended to hike during summer time.
Rahul B — Google review
Very pleasant hike and the Hyakuhiro waterfall is incredible especially in winter. Plenty of space at the top to have a break and some good views on the surrounding mountains (depending on weather). Took the bus from Okutama to Kawanoribashi, from there the ascent might be a bit tough for people who have height anxiety, as there are many wooden and steel bridges and the trail runs along the ridge. A bit slippery with snow and some steps might be hidden with snow/leaves. Descended down to Hatonosu, this trail is easy and goes through the forest without any major views. Totally recommend as one day hike for people with at least some experience and level of fitness.

Some sections are not only narrow but also have cliffs next to them. You must pay attention to safety. There are many rocks on the trail at the top of the mountain. If you go down the mountain to Hatonosu Station, there are also many gravels of different sizes. Be careful not to slip. The journey to reach it involves a short but steep climb up stone steps, rewarding visitors with tranquility and an almost sacred atmosphere. (Translated by Google) I visited the shrine on a holiday morning. By chance, there were no other visitors there, so I was able to spend a peaceful time. However, what made the biggest impression on me was seeing a Japanese serow near the shrine's parking lot. There were two of them lined up on a cliff, but one of them quickly ran away after I approached carelessly. I was glad that I managed to take a photo of the remaining one. Gallery Poppo is a charming restaurant nestled in Hatonosu Valley, situated at one end of a suspension bridge. The cozy eatery offers delectable dishes such as soup curry, pizza toast, and cake, complemented by a selection of coffee and tea. With only counter seating available, diners can savor their meals while taking in the breathtaking view of Hatonosu.
Nov.3, 2023. Had lunch at Poppo Gallery. I ordered Yasai Kare (vegetable curry). The curry has strong spices so it gives bitter taste. I like the spices. Inside there are 17 seats by the window. Outside there are 4 chairs under a parasol. It opens at 12 noon. Better come early. No reservation needed. When you come in, take off your shoes, and put on the sandals. When I came, there was only one lunch course, veggies curry. However, there are many kinds of cakes and drinks. If you drive, there is no parking spot. The entrance is through a hot spring hotel Hatonosu. Walk down the valley.

Overall, it’s a nice place to give a break while hiking along the river.

The parking lot is small, so I had to wait in line. However, the complicated layout of the lot makes lining up difficult. In the end, someone cut in line, which put a damper on my enthusiasm. The restaurant has a nice atmosphere, but it's a little hot. Soup and water are self-service. I ordered roast beef and coconut curry. Both looked just as delicious as the photos! I had high hopes! The wasabi sauce for the roast beef is served on a separate plate, so it's perfect for families with children. But...the overall flavor wasn't to my liking. I wonder. Was the roast beef a little overcooked? Was the flavor unbalanced? (The rice would have been better if it had more flavor.) The curry was clearly bland. I asked for salt and ate it. Hmm. The atmosphere is nice, and the ingredients are good. It was a disappointing feeling. Atago Shrine is located on a 30-meter mountain and can be reached by a steep trail, taking about 20-30 minutes to walk from the main road. The climb can be challenging with steep stone steps and no guard rails in some areas, making it scary for those afraid of heights. However, the shrine offers beautiful views of the village below. The annual festival is held on New Year's Day and June 24th.
I was not prepared for how scary this climb was! It was a completely beautiful mountain and a good hike, but I was shaking like a leaf. In hindsight, it was totally worth it, but I would advise against hiking it if you have moderate issues with mobility, or get dizzy when looking down. There are many points in which there aren’t guard rails, so it can be scary. I’m chronically afraid of heights and I did it, crawling on my hands and knees, dirt under my fingernails- but I did it! If you want to see it but have issues climbing, or if you make it to the too from the trail and get scared to come down, there is a way to get there by car- however, there will still be a climb, but it will be safer! I’m glad I did it for sure. PS: I know my photos show mostly stairs; I was unable to take photos of the next leg of the journey, I was way too scared- just trust me lol! But I believe if you’re like me and afraid of heights, it is possible. I was almost pushed to my limit with this but it feels great to conquer this fear!

(Translated by Google) From Okutama Station, it takes about 20 minutes on foot to reach the beautiful five-storied pagoda and the main shrine. Continue on the upward path. There is a fairly steep stone staircase with 188 steps along the way, but you have to climb a step-like slope to get there, so it's almost a climb all the way. It can be quite difficult if you are not used to hills. When I went from this road in mid-July, I was captivated by the large white mountain lilies blooming on the slope in front of the tower. If you go down on the other side, you will see a guardian dog and a torii gate, so this side is originally the front. I prayed for safety on the long saw ridge ahead. I wonder if that's the right position. Hikawa Camp Site is a popular camping destination located in Okutama, just a few hours outside of central Tokyo. It's easily accessible from the station, making it perfect for walkers and families. The site offers convenient facilities, lodges, and bungalow-type accommodations. Situated next to the Okutama River, visitors can enjoy activities such as BBQs, swimming, and stand-up paddleboarding.
Pretty great camping spot. It can get pretty windy and humid if you camp too close to the lake, but there's slightly elevated spot in case you want to avoid it. There's shop for camping necessities that open until 5pm. Local shops also provide nice food ingredients at surprisingly reasonable price. Paid warm shower also available at 300 yen ish. Toilet is pretty clean and can be accessed anytime. The log houses seems to be great option if you want to explore okutama and stay overnight, without the hassle of setting up tent.

Direct fire is allowed.

Neko J — Google review
I went there on the 5th of August and set up an overnight camp on the riverbed tent area. I have only used the tent area therefore will only speak of the tent area. I was surprised to see that many people on a Tuesday but a large majority of them (about 90%) didn't stay overnight. It's a camping site where you set your tent up wherever you want so you can try to identify people that won't stay overnight by looking at their gear and set your tent up accordingly (where you want to end up after 5pm when most people go home/wake up at in the morning, not where you want to start your day if you check in relatively late) so you won't have to move your setup later. ⊛A few positive things: ⁂ Relatively long but very easily accessible from Shinjuku Station. ⁂ I thought it would be very warm at night but I did turn my portable fan off at night(33 degrees Celsius during the day, about 22-23 at night). ⁂ The water was very clear and I was able to swim in the river. It was very refreshing (watch out for strong current zones) ⁂ You can fish if you purchase a fishing permit. ⁂ Very close to the Okutama Train station, 1 convenience store (not 24h) and a small butcher. ⁂ Camp fire anywhere you want. ⁂⁂ Shower (cold or hot) for 200 jpy/4 minutes which was very, very refreshing before sleeping. ⊛A few negative things I had to deal with: ⁂ Might sound funny but I had to fight off a very stubborn horsefly that kept coming for me every 30-60 mins. These things bite and suck your blood, are pretty big and their bite hurts. It seemed to only come for me even though there were people that had tents around me (I usually am "the buffet"). I did the research afterwards and all I can say is DON'T wear black/dark uv protection clothes and use DEET-based (at least 30–50%) or picaridin repellents on exposed skin and clothing. ⁂ This camp for some reason seems to attract non Japanese people. There was a group of an ethnic group I won't mention that was loud even after 1am, even when passing close to my tent to go to the restroom. Shining their torch, phone flashlights without caring about where they were aiming. I had to ask them to be quiet and they did. Now, I could've just gone and spoke to nightshift guy instead of talking to them myself but ⁂ it's quite a workout to go from the riverbed to the reception after a long day.

We spent a night at Hikawa Campsite in a cabin with six adults. The cabin was reasonably sized and priced, equipped with cots for everyone. While it lacked air conditioning, it did have a refrigerator and a fan. The absence of air conditioning could be an issue in the summer, but fortunately, the weather was pleasant during our stay. One downside was the absence of a private fire pit near our cabin. Although there was a barbecue area, it was quite busy with loud college students. So, we opted to set up a barbecue by the riverside, though it was a bit of a challenge due to the steep terrain and the need to carry heavy coolers. The staff were incredibly friendly, and they offered affordable firewood and fireworks for purchase. The restroom facilities were surprisingly clean for a campsite. Additionally, the campsite had a designated garbage disposal area, which was a welcome convenience not often found at other sites. The only disappointment was the steep parking fee of 1,400 yen per car. Unfortunately, there was no way to avoid this fee, especially when carrying a lot of camping gear. Overall, I'd rate the cabin and the atmosphere a 4/5, but I have to deduct one point for the lack of a private fire area near the cabin and the high parking cost.

The station is particularly renowned for its picturesque name and beautiful surroundings, making it an ideal spot for enjoying the changing leaves.

This is one of the most iconic rural train stations in the Tokyo area. It offers the perfect sight of a traditional looking train station, combined with the view of the nearby mountains and the surrounding town. There are toilets available around the corner, and they are quite clean too. The station gets its fair share of passengers on the weekends, but it's not terribly busy despite only having a single gate. If you're going to the mountains or coming back, I hope you will enjoy this unique beautiful sight as much as I did.

Dodokoro Bridge is a suspension bridge near Lake Okutama on Okutama Mukashimichi, offering stunning views of the surrounding valley and autumn foliage. It is more stable than the nearby Shidakura Bridge, accommodating up to 5 people at a time. The narrow road leading to the bridge makes it challenging to access by car, so walking or biking is recommended. Despite being somewhat damaged, Dodokoro Bridge provides an authentic and picturesque experience for visitors.

Mt. Mito, located in the quiet Okutama area of Western Tokyo, is a family-friendly hiking destination offering picturesque views and natural beauty. Ogouchi Dam, located in Tokyo, offers a stunning panoramic view especially during the early autumn season. It's a great place to visit with children to teach them about the source of water. The area is popular for autumn foliage hiking and short mountain climbing, making it quite busy during peak seasons. Although there are limited facilities such as a restaurant and small souvenir shop at Fureai-kan, the breathtaking views make it worth a visit.
One of my most favorite spots for quick motorbike trips. There's a lot of lovely places around to have some rest, vending machines and toilets. There's also a lovely walk path, mostly flat, around the lake, which I recommend to anyone, who is not able to hike or do a physically demanding walks in the mountains. Very quiet (despite loads of bikers and their loud machines) and excellent for photography lovers.

Whether you visit during autumn for the vibrant foliage or in spring for cherry blossoms, the scenery is breathtaking year-round.

On a slightly cloudy day, this dam offers one of the most amazing views of nature, water, mountains and the dam itself. This dramatic scene looks almost too perfect to be real, like an artifical background for a movie scene or a painting. It is beautiful to observe and walk around the dam/lake at a time like this and just witness this marvel of nature. There is also an observatory, but it's basically just a 3 floors tall tower that doesn't provide a whole lot of extra view since the lake and dam are just so vast to begin with. However, it offers a slightly different perspective, there is an exposition about the dam and the entrance is free, so you might as well check it out if you visit at the right time. Regardless, this dam is always worth checking out for its absolutely stunning scenery.

Mt. Takanosu is a challenging mountain with a steep trail, ravine, and ridge leading to its summit, offering stunning views of Mount Fuji and the surrounding area. The south side provides breathtaking vistas of Okutama mountains, Tokyo peace pagoda at Mt Odera, and iconic Mt. Fuji on clear days. In summer, the peak boasts a variety of wildflowers. Climbing in February still presents significant snow along the ridge, requiring crampons or spikes for the icy path.
Just came back from the top of Mt. Kuratoyama (right before Mt. Takanosu). The trail was awesome and beautiful. It’s super sketch as I did it in middle of February. There was a lot of snow, and I had on regular hiking shoes. I camped at the summit on the snow, and decided to turn back at this point as I was the only person in the area. It was so cold at nite that my hands were sore thru my gloves. Wonderful sunset and hot food made the trip fabulous. Left in the morning amongst the fluttering of birdies. For those going during February, don’t hesitate to turn back after Kurato especially if alone as it only gets colder and snowier the higher u go.

The grounds, surrounded by trees, were cool, even in the middle of summer. More than anything, I was soothed by the cat that suddenly appeared on the grounds. It was friendly, and spending some time with it felt so peaceful and luxurious. It's not flashy, but it's a very charming shrine nestled in nature. Because it's not overly touristy, you can really experience the tranquility and sanctity. If you want to take a deep breath and escape from everyday life, be sure to visit. It's a peaceful place for relaxing your mind, a small local Japanese village. It takes two hours from Tokyo Station by Ome Rapid train. It's worth taking a trip here if you have free time. I just wonder why it's so beautiful, but few people come here. You can get an English map and some suggestions from an information center in front of Okutama Station.

Tucked away just 90 minutes from Tokyo’s bustling heart lies one of Japan’s best-kept secrets — Hikawa Gorge (氷川渓谷) in Okutama. It’s not just a destination — it’s a reset button for your soul. From the moment you step off the train at Okutama Station, you’re greeted by fresh mountain air and the soft roar of the Tama River weaving through ancient stone and moss-covered boulders. The gorge unfolds like a Ghibli backdrop — serene, lush, and wildly photogenic. Think emerald waters, vibrant foliage, and the kind of peace that city life can never offer. The trail along the gorge is an easy, accessible walk, perfect for casual hikers, couples, or even solo travelers needing to disconnect. Every twist in the path offers a new view — a shimmering pool of water, a wooden suspension bridge, or sunlight filtering dreamily through cedar trees. In autumn, it transforms into a kaleidoscope of red, gold, and amber. In summer, the cool river breeze makes it a perfect natural air-con retreat. What sets Hikawa Gorge apart is its unspoiled charm — no crowds, no tourist traps, just nature in its purest form. Want a picnic by the river? Do it. Want that Instagram-perfect bridge shot? It’s there, waiting. Need to clear your mind while listening to the river’s lullaby? You’ll find your zen here. Whether you’re an overworked Tokyoite or a traveler looking to escape the beaten path, Hikawa Gorge is your green antidote to city noise. Bring your camera, your favorite snack, and a quiet heart. You’ll leave with more than just pictures — you’ll leave with peace.

My experience here was almost dreamlike, such a beautiful, and serene place. I wanted to visit Okutama, so I hopped on all the trains I needed to get there. A much needed break from the city which was met with such an interesting progression of concrete buildings, to family homes and finally to lush green rolling hills, valleys, mountains dotted with patches of buildings and homes. As I got closer to Okutama I noticed my train cart becoming emptier and emptier as people departed at their stops. At a point it felt like I was the only one on board, an almost spirited away kinda feeling. I got off at Okutama station, step out of the cabin like designed station into a calm mist like drizzle of rain. I was one of 5 passengers leaving the station and the rest went off in their respective directions while I made my way to Hikawa gorge. It was so strange I walked past a shrine at the entrance to the bridge that leads to the paths of the gorge and it felt like I was the only person there, in fact I was. I crossed the wooden bridge and had free rein to go where ever I wanted. I walked all over the place, listening to the rain, feeling the cool atmosphere, and breathing in the crisp mountain air. I wish I had more time here but I arrived a few hours before sundown and felt like I needed to leave soon. I wish I also brought better footwear because I would have hiked up the shrine at the top of the nearby mountain. Anyways please go visit okutama and Hikawa gorge it was great

I came during the week in autumn when it was not very busy. The water is so clear and beautiful! The views are spectacular from the bridges and trails! We also enjoyed looking at the abandoned hotel - very eery. We saw people swimming and kayaking nearby. We also visited an small onsen in the area - perfect for after hiking. This is a great place to come for a day hike.

(Translated by Google) Shirahige Shrine is a shrine built next to a large rock that is approximately 30 meters high and 40 meters wide. The large rock is a natural monument of Tokyo. This wall-like rock is said to be a major exposure of a fault plane. In September 2020, I drove the entire length of the 10km old Ome Kaido ``Okutama Mukashi-michi'' from Okutama Station on the Ome Line to Lake Okutama. ``Okutama Old Road'' is a road that was formerly called Ome Kaido and runs from Hikawa to Ogouchi. This highway was a back road in Koshu that ran from Kosuge to Kofu over Daibosatsu Pass, and was said to be about 8km shorter than the Koshu Highway. This place is significant due to an inclined rock. The rock is not really immediately interesting but the inclination and fault lines and color are all interesting. I wish I had gottem some geological info before coming. Besides the rock, the view is only remotely interesting and the temple ia nothing really special. But it is a nice treat to stop over and enjoy many things beaidea the visit to ths dam. Only thing is to be careful on how to get there. The way is tricky. Google map shows the location but no road. So use street view and go forward or back to know how to get there.
