Historic Sites
The Crypt at St Leonard's Church in Hythe is home to the largest and most well-preserved collection of ancient human bones and skulls in Britain. With over 2,000 skulls, this bonehouse holds a mysterious history as the origins of these remains remain unknown. The churchyard where these citizens were initially buried was later extended over, leading to their exhumation in the 13th century. Visitors can expect an informative guide who can provide insights into this intriguing collection.
The best preserved collection of ancient bones & skulls in Britain. It’s only a small crypt but is staggering how many bones have been found & now kept here. A small fee to enter & a guide is inside for any further information needed & to help preserve the bones. The lady we saw was very informative & helpful.
The F — Google review
Really interesting to see that many skulls and bones at one place. The church also worth a visit, looks nice inside. There is a parking place next to the church. Check the opening times on their website, done by volunteers.

One of the very few ossuary in the uk and definitely the main one of those. A really friendly elderly man greeted us and gave us a phenomenal history of the place, for only £1! The place is well maintained with lots of bones and the church its attached to is very interesting as well. Really worth your time to come and visit and the town nearby is worth a little wonder.
Caïna V — Google review
The largest and best preserved collection of ancient human skulls and bones in Britain! The 2000 skulls of St Leonard's Bonehouse are from citizens of Hythe who were buried in the churchyard and then dug up in the 13th Century when the church was extended over their graves. Very informative guide who will answer any of your questions. The crypt is located on the steep hill, but it will be worth visiting. The crypt is currently closed and will reopen again to visitors next Easter.

What a fascinating collection, we got a little tour and very much enjoyed looking at the bones. Amazing… and pretty weird. The church is really impressive too, massive organ…

Incredibly interesting place, unfortunately didn't get the man's name in the ossuary but he was amazing. Very knowledgeable and engaging. Highly recommend a visit here!
Harriette C — Google review
A fantastic place to visit, an oddity to be sure, but fantastic, not expensive at all and I urge you to donate to the church fund to keep it open for generations to come. Don't forget to visit the church above. Limited disabled parking,

Beach
Outdoor Activities
Hythe Beach is a charming and unspoiled pebble beach located on the south-eastern coast, nestled between Folkestone and Dymchurch. The beach offers a steep slope into the sea, with deep waters that are perfect for swimming. It's a peaceful alternative to the bustling towns nearby, offering lovely walks, rich military history, and quaint dining options along the old-school high street.
Hythe beach is a long stretch of shingle coastline that also takes in Sandgate and Seabrook. Hythe is steeped in history, and running parallel to the beach is the military canal that runs through the historic Kent town. Hythe is formally one of the cinque ports and still retains many historic remnants of its past.
Daniel D — Google review
Shingle Beach. Free parking along the front and side roads but this was very busy when we went down was lucky to get a spot or you could have a bit of a walk, not bad but if like me you have all the beach gear for the kids could be an issue. Toilets are at one end, not the cleanest. We were at the lazy shack end and was able to get some chips later on. Good beach if you want to just sit and read a book. Not the best for the kids I would say.
Dan — Google review
Hythe, located on the Kent coast, is a charming seaside town that offers a delightful mix of traditional English charm and beautiful coastal scenery. One of the highlights of the town is its picturesque beach, which provides a peaceful retreat for visitors. The pebbled shoreline stretches along the seafront, offering stunning views of the English Channel, and it's perfect for a relaxing walk or a quiet afternoon by the water. The beach is clean, uncrowded, and ideal for anyone looking to escape the hustle and bustle of busier seaside towns. The town also boasts a wide selection of places to eat, catering to a variety of tastes. Whether you’re in the mood for traditional British fare, fresh seafood, or something a bit more contemporary, Hythe has plenty of options. Local pubs and cafes offer cozy, welcoming atmospheres, while the restaurants along the seafront provide the perfect backdrop for a meal with a view. There’s something for everyone, from casual bites to more refined dining experiences. Hythe’s high street is another feature that gives the town its traditional feel. The street is lined with a variety of independent shops, boutiques, and local businesses, making it a great place for a leisurely stroll. You’ll find everything from artisan gifts and homeware to clothing and fresh produce. However, it is worth noting that there are perhaps too many charity shops along the high street. While these stores can be great for a bargain hunt, they do tend to dominate the shopping scene, which some visitors might find a bit repetitive. One of the most convenient aspects of Hythe is its parking situation. There’s plenty of easy street parking available along the seafront, and the best part is that it’s free, which is a rare find in many coastal towns. This makes it easy to access the beach and town centre without the hassle of finding paid parking or walking long distances. Overall, Hythe is a delightful coastal town with plenty to offer visitors. Its beautiful beach, variety of eateries, and traditional high street make it a pleasant place to spend the day. While the abundance of charity shops may not appeal to everyone, the town’s relaxed atmosphere, scenic views, and easy parking make it a lovely destination for a day trip or longer stay.

Nice beach. Pebbles. Couple of cafes/restaurant. Shops are all in town. Well kept beach
Richard J — Google review
It's a shingle beach! At low tide, lovely small lagoon paddling for children inshore of rocky reef. Pity nearby Sandgate Hotel can't find its identity - fancy not serving drinks etc in the daytime! Never mind, Sandgate itself has lots of enticing cafes instead.
Christiana B — Google review
A lovely pebble beach. It was very quiet when we went and my children enjoyed finding stones and splashing in the water. There was a cafe at the end of the beach which had food, drink and nice clean toilets. If you are lucky you will get to see one of the fishing boats go out to sea.
Laurence B — Google review
Outdoor gents and ladies toilets were open and reasonable, shingle working beach with good fish and chip shop at one end and a couple of pubs and cafes dotted down the front. Parking free and unrestricted on the front with access over the sea defences to the waterfront
Theo D — Google review
Such a wonderful place, lovely walks, interesting military history and the high street is old school and has some lovely places to eat and drink. Definitely recommend a visit here. If you can rent a place on the seafront like we did, that would be the icing on the cake!! Waking up to the superb Sea views is enough to start your day in a fantastic way!!!!

Hythe Local History Museum is a delightful treasure trove that showcases the rich military heritage of this charming town, which has been linked to the Cinque Ports and served as a garrison town. Established in the 19th century, it highlights significant historical elements like the School of Musketry and remnants from Napoleonic defenses, including its picturesque canal. Visitors can stroll through Hythe and discover informative plaques that narrate its strategic past.
Visited her earlier this week with our little grandson. What a fantastic find! We all loved it (for different reasons). Very interactive and engaging. And free! Would highly recommend a visit

Amusement park
Outdoor Activities
Beaches
Dymchurch Amusement Park is a charming seaside attraction with a variety of rides and amusements suitable for the whole family. From dodgems and a ghost train to arcades and a rollercoaster, there are options for all ages to enjoy. The park opens daily at 11:00 am, offering an old-fashioned yet fun atmosphere that has been enjoyed by generations. While the rides may be more geared towards younger visitors, adults can still join in on the fun.
We visited a lovely little amusement park right next to the seaside, and it was such a pleasant surprise. While it’s on the smaller side, it’s incredibly convenient and very reasonably priced. There’s plenty to do for both children and adults, making it a perfect add-on to a seaside visit. One of the absolute highlights was the bumper cars — hands down the best bumper car experience I’ve ever had. The ride was much longer than most places, and it added so much fun to our day. It really stood out as the highlight of our visit! A quick note for visitors: the park only accepts cash, and you’ll need to exchange it for tokens to use on the rides. So make sure to come prepared. All in all, it’s a fun, budget-friendly way to spend a few hours by the sea. We’ll definitely return!
Kobz A — Google review
I love Dymchurch, its not over crowded and not overly expensive. The amusements were reasonably priced. The rides were perfect for the little ones. Its not huge, but enough to entertain for a short while. The sandy beach is located right behind it.
Lorren J — Google review
Great fun for toddlers and teens. Enjoyed walking along the long stretched beach and freshly made doughnuts!
SnapNSpill — Google review
Not all rides were available. Mostly for younger children. Ghost train was fun. The elephant ride looked fun but ever so slow! Would say 10 yrs old and younger is perfect 😊
Alison R — Google review
All of the years I have been to Dymchurch Amusements I have not been let down! My grandparents have a lovely time with me all the activities! I think it is clean! Quite over priced as one ride is 2 tokens! The staff are soooo friendly! Every time I have been it creates a new memory I will Cherish forever!
Helen W — Google review
took my son Who is severally autistic but OBSESSED with rides, most rides are 2 Discs per person and having to go on with him, 4 discs per ride and with a child who wants to go on constantly cost me £50! I think for what it is it's very pricey, the workers didnt say a single word, no greeting going onto the rides seemed very fed up. I think I counted 8 rides and the bumper cars. but the main thing is my son was happy which makes all these things alright. but you could get a day out somewhere bigger for the money youd pay he especially if you have several kids!
Aimee F — Google review
Kids loved this place. You need cash to buy tokens, the more you buy the cheaper, so 20 was £25 and you can get more, but if you ge less, it dearer.. 3 for £5. Small rides for little ones and bigger rides for older ones, mine are 7 and 10 and tall and had 5 rides each but could have done more! No queuing to get on, we went at open time.. 11am. Good fun!! Parking jsut down the road in a pay and display managed by ring goor cash.
Sarah T — Google review
It's a rather shabby, over priced collection of mediocre rides. The token stall only accepts cash. The shooting star ride is really boring, it sits at the top for too long barely dropping. The children barely let out a noise of excitement. All rides are 2 tokens (working out just less than £5 a ride) . The smaller rides are 1 token. The waltzer was fun - the children enjoyed that one. The rest left them underwhelmed (They are primary school age) The staff working the rides are miserable and don't look like they want to be there. Generally a miserable expensive place to visit.

"The Red Lion" is a charming and traditional pub with a cozy atmosphere, offering rustic dining options and a lovely garden. The bright rooms come with complimentary breakfast, making it an ideal choice for a pleasant coastal walking weekend. Conveniently located near Hythe High Street, the military canal, and the steam railway, this establishment also provides ample parking. Guests have praised the friendly staff, spotlessly clean and well-decorated rooms, as well as the delicious food served in the restaurant.
Lovely budget Hotel. Clean and well appointed room. A very big room and bathroom. Staff are attentive even helping carry our bags. We were informed when booking that the hotel is located on a busy road and some traffic noise is to be expected. Whole traffic noise was evident it did not prevent a good nights sleep with the windows open, in the morning when the road became a little busier simply closing the window reduced traffic noise allowing my wife to sleep in until 9 am. The restaurant is excellent with generous good quality food served by very attentive staff. All round a great place to stay.
Graham C — Google review
Stopped for a 2 night stay at a very good price. Considering where the pub is situated. Can’t find fault. Beech 10 min walk away. Clean and tidy rooms and shower. We didn’t opt for breakfast. Booking, check in & out was very easy. The fella on the phone was very helpful. Made our short stay on the south coast very welcoming. Thank you !
Rob — Google review
Food was amazing. Live locally so visit often. Had soup of the day. Leek and potatoe with Focaccia bread. Bread would be better sliced to spread the amazing butter rather than served in 2 chunks. Still thoroughly enjoyed though. Xx

Good pub food and great real ale at very competitive prices. Staff very pleasant and competent. I'm from Yorkshire so know all about good value for money so get yourselves there and get some snap and a few pints in you!🍗🍻
Ray — Google review
When we're on holiday in the area (twice a year), we have come to the Red Lion for lunch for 6 years running. The car park is quite small for the pub. In the past, the food and surroundings were excellent - for example, the fishcakes were delicious and the lemon meringue pie piled high with meringue. Today the food and surroundings were average. The place was clean and tidy but there were plastic flowers and leaves as decoration. My husband had the pie of the day (steak and cheese) which looked fantastic but had pieces of bone inside. The vegetables were cooked al dente which were then too hard for his teeth 😒. My squash and chickpea curry was a good sized portion and tasted fine. The waitress offered us water for the table and was pleasant but couldn't work out 10% of the bill (in her head) to add as a tip, so we just rounded the bill up for her.
Heather W — Google review
Had an amazing Sunday lunch. The food was superb, a good traditional roast dinner at very reasonable price. The service was first class with such friendly and helpful staff. Highly recommend 👌
Kirstie S — Google review
I’ve never tried the rooms but this pub is so friendly I recently lost my mum and I was worried about going out but I have been here three times no other place I would want to go. The food is top notch aswrll I recommend the pork belly!!

4 real ales, Youngs and Harveys plus 2 guests. We had good ale and locally recognised. We had dinner but should have had the Thursday night 30% off steak. I photgraphed the board but didn't read it. Proper pub that is very clean, including the toilets. Monthly quiz and live music.

Beautiful place, lots to explore and had the place to ourselves today which was an unexpected bonus! Our kids enjoyed the play park and were very excited by the cascade. We saw a Heron amongst other wildlife and enjoyed the walk around the lake. Well worth a visit!

Brockhill country park is near to Hythe in Kent It has a lake, wooded areas and open grassland and also the Brockhill stream. There are three marked paths, the blue route is 1.1 km and mainly goes around the area of the lake. The other two walks are around 2.5 km. There is a pay and display car park,a cafe is close to this area as well as toilets including one with disabled facilities. There are also picnic tables nearby. The park also has a kids play area. Dogs are allowed and can come off their leads in most areas. It's quite peaceful with the sounds of nature in the air, it's easy to spend a couple of hours exploring the area, longer if you take a picnic.
W H — Google review
Brilliant place! great for a little wander around the lake and play in the park. The stream is great fun to jump over and although lots of the steep banks are now fenced off, there is still one that provides a climbing challenge for older children. There are things to look at/read dotted around and if you take paper and a crayons you can do rubbings in various places. The gardens are very well kept and there wasn't any rubbish. The parking is expensive but it's understandable for the upkeep of the park. the loos are free and the cafe is very reasonably priced...I can't remember the last time we had a cornetto type ice cream for £1 each! The free biscuit when you say the word written on the board is a lovely touch!

What a stunning place for a walk . Never knew it was there in all the times I have near Hythe. Two routes to walk and the red one takes you into a lovely valley. Very good cafe and clean toilets. £3.50 at weekends for all day parking.

Lovely park with an excellent cafe - by an ISKCON devotee. Well laid out trails - easy, moderate and tough. Restrooms and facilities available.

Bit expensive if youre just using it to run your dogs as its about a 30min lap. It benefits from a stream thats accessible in the large fields after the sheep enclosure. Parking is £3.60 on a sunday for all day. Theres no hourly rate so it you use it for an hour or 9-7 you'll pay the same which isnt good for quick visits. I came here before jumping on the leshuttle so the dogs they sorted. Good news there's toilets available. A cafe was there but closed 5pm on a sunday. Id avoid the car park and enter from the estate which I found blonde doing a lap of the park. Entrance here is ///paving.jiggle.flagpole (what3words) save yourself some money if youre not a fan of paying an all day fee visiting for an hour.

Wedding venue
The Hythe Imperial Hotel is a historic 18th-century venue offering a luxurious experience with its 9-hole golf course, spa, and elegant restaurant. The hotel, housed in a Jacobean-inspired building dating back to 1894, provides stunning sea views and an idyllic location overlooking Kent's white-cliffed coast. Guests can indulge in pampering treatments such as massages, facials, and beauty sessions while enjoying the picturesque surroundings.
We stumbled across hotel in a search on Google and booked afternoon tea. We had a friendly greeting from reception who told us to inform bar staff in bar room opposite. The hotel bar did seem under staffed but staff were friendly and courteous. As we were early they gave us a couple of options, and we opted for sitting at the Gazebo in the well tended gardens. We were offered drinks twice and afternoon tea followed on. It was delicious and even the vegan scones were great. I’m not sure why it wasn’t busy but we had whole of garden area to ourselves. We never did get offered the tea & coffee as a wedding started in the hotel and we assume made the bar busy, but it was fine as we had complimentary Prosecco already offered, and a jug of water with soft drinks, so none went thirsty.😉 Afternoon team was great value less than half of what you would pay anywhere else especially if in London. We absolutely loved the experience and would return again next year. There is ample parking here, the seaside is just opposite and the beach was empty for a sunny afternoon we thought it was a rare occurrence but we will find out only when we return next year. Highly recommended

Booked a midweek 2 night stay for a birthday treat. Staff were all so friendly and professional, their standards were amazing including their attire. Nothing was too much trouble, they arranged to bring surprise champagne to the dinner table and made us feel like VIPs. Dinner was outstanding, food was excellent and incredible service. Lovely ambience and music too. Breakfast was very good, huge selection and again great service. All food was continuously being topped up, so always fresh. Arrived early before check-in to use the gym and the staff were brilliant and very accommodating. Towels provided along with padlocks for lockers and there's also a machine to dry your swimwear after a dip in the lovely pool. Fantastic room with air-con, fridge and a huge comfy bed. We have stayed in other 4* hotels and none match the Hythe Imperial. We've had the most amazing stay will definitely come again.
Ann N — Google review
The Hythe Imperial Hotel offers an impressive setting on arrival, and the reception staff were both friendly and professional, giving the initial impression of a polished, well-run establishment. Unfortunately, that was where the so-called “posh” treatment ended. While the room featured some modern décor touches, the furnishings were noticeably tired, worn, and gave the sense of being well-used over many years rather than refreshed or luxurious. Our biggest concern was around safety and privacy. In the evening, a male staff member knocked and, without allowing time for us to respond, opened our door uninvited. He claimed to be delivering extra pillows we had never requested. This was unsettling, and I could not help but wonder how safe or comfortable an elderly female relative would feel in the same situation. Other aspects of the stay were equally disappointing. Navigating to the spa felt like wandering through a dark maze, and once we finally found it, it appeared closed well before expected hours. The following morning, breakfast was a letdown. Despite arriving almost an hour before service was meant to end, most of the food was either cold, stale, or already being packed away. The selection was bland, and we felt rushed to leave. While the location and reception staff were positives, the issues with security, privacy, and overall upkeep mean we would not recommend the Hythe Imperial Hotel to family or friends.
Heather M — Google review
Excellent hotel the rooms were lovely and roomy with king size beds, lovely bathroom and all necessary facilities. Had spa treatments which was very enjoyable and extremely relaxing. Afternoon tea was delicious and they catered for all dietary needs. We also had a very relaxing evening meal with excellent service and beautifully prepared food. Breakfast was buffet style with lots of choice and again very well prepared The staff for all areas were very attentive and nothing was too much trouble. They were very friendly and very well trained. I would whole heartedly recommend this hotel.

Nice room with a fantastic sea view. We enjoyed the champagne bar, and breakfast was fine, BUT.... the downstairs bar (next to the entrance) is absolutely grim! An empty room with some tables and chairs and lighting that reminded us of the freezer department in Sainsburys. Questions below - would you describe it as - Luxury - no, it is due for some refurb work Quiet - no. there are weddings, and they're never quiet Child friendly - unfortunately, yes. High-tech - no. unless they mean does it have wifi(?!)

I have no problem in recommending this hotel

A lovely hotel right next to the sea. Our room was spacious and comfy with a lovely view over the town and the hills. Despite the air-conditioning, the room was hot at night though. Otherwise everything very good; a nice pool and gym. Great location, comfortable, and friendly service.

Absolutely awful experience. No air conditioning working when we checked in. Were told it was on the website, but no email or call prior to let us know. Who checks the website the day of checking in? No one. Irrelevant anyway as the dates listed on the website were completely different to our check in dates so not applicable to us. Were provided with a fan which isn’t a suitable substitute in the heat. Breakfast was abysmal, £19 for rock hard hash browns, cold beans and watery coffee. The hotel is majorly outdated and needs a major scrub and upgrade everywhere. Bathrooms are dirty and all surfaces were dusty. Swimming pool was full to the brim with kids and hotter than the sun. Reception staff were incapable and rude, the lady checking us out couldn’t care less about the uncomfortable night we had. You can’t provide a service and then not provide it and then when asked for compensation for not providing the service asked for say you are no longer going to reply to emails. The receptionist on the emails also said my name in emails wrong twice. Attention to detail = zero. It’s literally right in front of you. Would not recommend staying here at all. Save your money and go elsewhere.

Nature & Parks
The American Garden is a serene and vibrant oasis, featuring an abundance of rhododendrons and fragrant azaleas intertwined with sunlit clearings and winding pathways. Visitors can explore the 'Magical Forest,' as it's affectionately called by many, in May, where children often spend their weekends surrounded by the enchanting scents of wisteria and wild garlic.
Beautiful relaxing gardens full of flowers, a very reasonable tea room - definitely worth a visit
Caroline H — Google review
Beautiful! Meandering paths with a large collection of azaleas and rhododendrons (planted in 1820) and even a couple of redwoods. It's a lovely way to spend a few hours and the visit can be topped off with a cuppa and cake from the little café. Uneven paths. £7.50pp children free.
Lisa Q — Google review
Beautiful gardens and cute cafe. Entry price is £7.50, they prefer cash for entry and card at the cafe.
Angela C — Google review
Absolutely divine! Well worth the entrance fee. Embarrassing that anyone moans when you can't even buy a pack of cigs for that sum. :-( Stunning gardens, lovely cakes and drinks and absolutely staff. Will be back! Good parking too.
Lucinda R — Google review
Open weekends in May. Beware hefty entrance fee! A nostalgic sense of bygone family lives lingers across this rambling estate. Winding paths wend through a valley of exuberant rhododendrons, small streams, gunnera, Japanese knotweed. It's a relief to emerge onto a lawn with chairs, tables and a quaint, welcome tea hut. The 'garden' represents valiant attempts to tame this frankly neglected wilderness - American only in name. Previous clergy have cherished this place. It's sad to see it so under-gardenered.
Christiana B — Google review
Lovely wild garden perfect for an afternoon walk and a slice of cake after.
Christophe T — Google review
So glad that the owner decided to reply to a review from 10 months ago. I was about to myself but the owner did it so much better. The reviewer may not be a fan of the news but there is an international economic crisis caused by wars, global warming, scarcity etc. Costs and prices have everywhere gone up. A very few years ago the owners used to charge £3 entry to the garden. I was one of, doubtless, several people who told them this was ridiculously cheap. The reviewer, who seems to frequent cafes rather than gardens, should check other garden prices. Several private gardens in the NHS now charge £8. The writer would clearly have preferred the Folkestone Leas in the 50s with manicured grass and tulips and lobelia in regimented rows. A huge amount of work goes into maintaining the garden in the style presumably imagined by it's creators. They, like other plant hunters of the time, were trying to reproduce, in non mountainous Kent, the landscapes of the Himalayas and China where the plants originated. On a practical note and to comply with Google's request. They are happy to accept cards and cash. The "tea hut" is a small venerable pavilion common in many large houses of the time for those playing either croquet or tennis on the adjacent lawn. I would challenge you to find cheaper or friendlier tea coffee or cake in such idyllic surroundings. Yes, there are excellent rest rooms in another garden building. Very clean with hot water and lovely soap. For those who find the hill a challenge there is an easier side entrance from the car park. The garden offers season tickets, a bargain at £15.
Marie R — Google review
This place is a hidden gem! In May my children and I come most weekends to spend time in the "Magical Forest" as they call it. The rhododendrons, azaleas, wisteria, together with the smell of damp earth and wild garlic all add to an amazing experience of walking down winding paths and hand etched steps, allowing to experience this deliberately "unkept" gardens from all the angles. The variety of plants is astounding too. It is impossible to feel unhappy while you're there. And the cakes served with a fresh brew of tea are just the cherry on top.

Striking piece of military history in a great location overlooking the channel. The grassy roughs just west of Hythe are an interesting environment, the uneven ground providing a challenging walk to the sound mirror, with some rocky outcrops to see along the way. If you're visiting with a dog, it'd be a good idea to keep it on a short lead as sheep graze the area and roam freely. The views over Romney Marsh and Hythe are excellent, and the area has an unusual, wild feel that sets it apart from the surrounding countryside. There's no official parking, but some of the streets in Hythe have free roadside parking if you don't mind a bit of a walk. The sound mirror itself is protected by a fence, probably for the best as the old receiver station nearby has been defaced with graffiti and filled with litter. Nonetheless, it's a fascinating military relic with a great walk to reach it.
Andrew T — Google review
Did a wild camp here last night. The area is very overgrown with nettles so can see it very well as it is currently. Hard to get to from the way we approached as had to scale down a very steep and wet bank. There is also an old bunker next to it. The area around it is very good for walks and scenery.
Tom C — Google review
Due to thick vegetation, going is quite difficult, especially in the summer. But once you are at the top, the view is beautiful. Walk from south towards the hill. If you approach from the uphill direction towards the downhill, there's no way to gain access.
G V — Google review
The Roughs surrounding the sound mirror offer breathtaking vistas, with rugged terrain stretching as far as the eye can see. From the windswept cliffs to the rolling hills, the landscape is a tapestry of natural beauty. Whether you're admiring the majesty of the sea crashing against the shore or marveling at the vastness of the sky, the Roughs never fail to captivate with their spectacular views.
Peter.J H — Google review
The Hythe Sound Mirror is a historical landmark, which is located in an area known as The Roughs. It is an example of unique warning systems that was built between about 1916 and the 1930s and was intended to provide early warning of incoming enemy aircraft in World War II. It is fenced off but you can still get close to it. Although, be prepared to face you walk in very overgrown area with nettles and thistles. The Sound Mirror is a little bit remote to find and lacks sign posting. We followed satnav indications and approached it from a field at the top of the cliffs. Needless to say, we needed to walk through the farm field , but we got there at the end! :) Awesome views of Hythe and the coast from there, so we didn't regret it at the end.
Irina S — Google review
The walk from the cycle path alongside the canal was over the fence and a short walk up, however the further you walk the more overgrown it was with nettles and thistles. But in saying that you get a great view I haven't seen before of Hythe across the shooting range and further. But be warned, I couldn't even make it all the way to the sound mirror and it's fensed off anyway but even half way up that hill had great views
Emily Q — Google review
Needs a better access but very nice to see it still there. Beautiful views and interesting to go to the fallen over one just east of it.
Christopher F — Google review
Bit if a hike to get there from the canal side but interesting Disappointed that the smaller example by the canal bridge didn’t seem to work but another walker says it never has !!🤣

A lovely space, perfect for small ones. The ladies running the place were really sweet and friendly, this is just what mums need. A safe space for kids and parents to relax, with a coffee and cake of course.

You can tell a lot of thought has gone into everything here for the sake of parents and children. A great play area that always seems to be evolving every time we come. Absolutely amazing brownies! Great coffee and all cafe prices are reasonable. Plenty of free parking around the area too. We love coming.

Immaculate, comfortable, inclusive. Hosted by 2 fantastic, experienced ladies. All needs considered of targeted ages, from a quiet corner for nursing mums, to full on adrenaline fuelled role play heaven! Great selection of party packages available, perfect kids picnic benches set up banquet style ready to refuel with ease. Can’t wait to come back to play again x

We love a trip to the play parlour , it keeps my 2 year old and her cousin, also 2 entertained! My 3month old son also enjoyed laying in the baby sensory area. The ladies here are so lovely and accommodating- they were more than happy to warm my baby's bottle up. The toddler toilet seats/ potty / extras are such a lovely touch and very welcome! There are so many lovely toys for them to play with and the venue is immaculately clean.

What a fantastic idea this place is! Came here this morning with our 2 year old & was really impressed! Staff were lovely, the place was immaculately clean & the facilities were great. It's so nice to have a play space to take the little ones that isn't as manic (or filthy..) as Kidz Planet and is just a relaxing fun time for the children. Highly recommended & will definitely be coming back soon. Thanks :)
Mad H — Google review
What a lovely place - the play area is set up perfectly for the little ones to explore and spark their imagination. My older child had a whale of a time - he got to be a pirate, a fireman, a barista, a builder and a shop assistant - and already wants to go back. My baby was fascinated by the toys in the baby area and I was very grateful for the quiet and comfortable breastfeeding/book corner. The whole family really enjoyed the visit!
Aleksandra K — Google review
The play parlour is a very welcome and lovely new addition to Hythe. My children had a great time. The owners have done a really good job with the space available and made it very accesible for all ages. The story area is a nice touch. Maybe lunch options for children would be a good improvement when the timing is right.
Nathalie S — Google review
Nice place to entertain the toddlers. They can go shopping, play in a fire engine , pirates ship , builders yard and hairdressers. Nice area set aside to give the kids lunch. Cafe present and open. All types of coffee and some cakes. Coffee and browny for £5. Kids lunch boxes sold. You can bring your own food and use the tables and chairs / high chairs. Staff friendly and helpful . So thumbs up. Bring the toddlers and let them explore.

Shepherd Hut Studios is a charming shop located just off Rye high street, with another branch in Hythe. The store offers stunning designs capturing the beauty of the Kent & Sussex coast, countryside, Romney Marsh, and birdlife on various items such as canvas, cushions, prints, tablemats, coasters, and greeting cards. However, the standout pieces are the incredible light and lamp shades featuring imaginative incorporation of local landmarks and views.
My husband and I popped into the shop so I could show him some pieces I had seen in the window a while back. My goodness, some of the art is breathtaking. We weren’t going to purchase anything and then we both decided we couldn’t leave this little gem behind. A beautiful piece of the dunes in Camber. It reminded us of all the beaches we love. Thank you, couldn’t recommend this shop enough!
Emily S — Google review
I just purchased a 40cm lampshade of Hythe Beach and am absolutely thrilled with it. On its own it looks very big but once on the floor lamp stand it is just perfect. It’s so nice to have something depicting a local view and such high quality prints at a very reasonable price. Terrific service and very helpful and friendly people. I would highly recommend. I hope they will sell place mats at some point again. Thank you!!

What a little find! The most beautiful and unique prints/homeware. The lovely lady and gentleman there couldn't have been more helpful and attentive. Absolutely chuffed with my new customised lampshade, that was ready to collect the same day! Couldn't reccomend enough.

Stunning shop tucked away just off Rye high street (they also have a shop in Hythe) absolutely beautiful designs of the surrounding Kent & Sussex coast, countryside, Romney Marsh & birdlife are captured onto canvas, cushions, framed & unframed prints as well as smaller items like tablemats, matching coasters & greeting cards - however, the stand out items here are the incredible light & lamp shades - the imaginative way the local landmarks & views are incorporated into the light shades is so impressive they really do catch the eye, not surprisingly we bought two & I can't imagine finding anything we would like better. Stylish, colourful designs which are so fresh & different, the items sell themselves, prices pitched just right too. A real gem of a find - outstanding!!!

This is such a lovely shop and the owners are very special. There are so many beautiful items and gifts. I have had the pleasure of exhibiting my art work in their window. The card selection is great and one can be spoilt for choice. I enjoy having a good browse. I particularly like the toys and marbles. There is a framing service available and many original paintings by various artists including the owner Hilary. There are lovely China ware and so many special treasures.

I live in Canada and saw a lovely Sam Toft print at this studio (online). As a Sam Toft devotee, It's frustrating to see prints in UK galleries that I would like to have, but the Gallery won't ship to Canada. Not so with Church Mouse Studio. Mr. Scoble took a lot of trouble to get the print to me. It arrived quickley and I've never seen such sercure packaging! I really, appreciate the trouble Mr. Scoble went to. What lovely customer service. Over and way beyond. Can't thank you enough Mr. Scoble. I hope to visit your Studio one day.
