Gardens
Connaught Gardens is a stunning public park located at the western end of Sidmouth's seafront. Maintained by the East Devon District Council and local horticultural group Sidmouth in Bloom, these gardens offer endless opportunities for photographers with their beautiful landscapes. Accessible via the South West Coast Path, these ornate gardens were established in the 1820s and provide magnificent views of the Jurassic Coast from atop the hill.
A wonderful hidden gem in Sidmouth It's a great walk from along the seafront from the town either go up the hill or or up to steps. I recommend up hill past the hotels the garden is in the left side. We always go clockwise and then down the steps and back to the town alone the beach walk. The garden is really well done with lots of history great plants and stunning views. Also a great restaurant as a bonus. Highly recommend

Lovely gardens even in the winter months. The views are beautiful from the top and it is a lovely spot to sit and relax in the sun. Lots of benches and clean toilets. Really enjoyed our visit.
Maria C — Google review
Always loved visiting these gardens since I was very small with my grandparents and they are still as good as ever. Absolutely beautiful

Very nice area Lots and lots of benches to sit.Great views and plenty of history of the area. The walk under the cliffs from Jacobs ladder is good looking up at the sandstone cliffs are huge and you can see fossilised plant remains.

Lovely location above the coastline of west Sidmouth. Nice views of the beach. Café with outdoor seating. Beautiful flower beds and a statue of the fiddle player with an information plaque behind him. Accessed from steps down from Manor Rd Car Park. Public convenience in a great location!

Museum
Specialty Museums
Sidmouth Museum is a small but fascinating museum located in the heart of Sidmouth, housed in a charming old Regency house next to the parish church. It offers an exploration of the town's history from its days as a tiny fishing village to its current status as a popular seaside destination. The museum boasts an extensive collection of Regency and Victorian items, costumes, lace, early paintings, prints, photographs, as well as rocks, fossils and footprints from the Jurassic Coast.
Spent a very interesting hour and a half in this museum. It's located right in the centre of Sidmouth, in a delightful old Regency house next to the parish church, and is run entirely by volunteers. Paid just £2.50 admission (under 16's can visit for free). There are two floors, but only the ground floor is wheelchair accessible. Although the museum is only small, there was a great deal for me to see. Both floors were packed with artefacts, photographs and information about Sidmouth and its history from the age of the dinosaurs to the present day. There were archaeological finds, items salvaged from shipwrecks, railway artefacts and a World War II gallery. Was really fascinated with the excellent collection of fossils and prehistoric footprints. I also loved the exquisite Honiton lace. Everything was clearly labelled, and there were some good interactive displays. The two volunteers were very friendly and showed a great interest in their museum and its exhibits. We had a chat and I learned some interesting facts about Sidmouth. There were also books for sale at the entrance. A must-see for anyone who loves local history!

Fantastic local history, it’s definitely worth a visit. I didn’t know so many famous people were from sidmouth. 👍🏻

Nice small museum, which had some interesting exhibits, you could easily spend two hours plus and it's very reasonably priced.

Lovely little museum with interesting local stories and geological history.
Steve D — Google review
An excellent small museum. My disabled husband could spend time (seated) searching the many interesting video choices, while I could wander the displays. Our tickets also allowed us to return after a lunch break. Thank you

Enjoy lace making on a thursday morning. The excellent displays in the museum are worthy of a much larger museum and are changed regularly. A wonderful source of local knowledge

3Jacob’s Ladder beach, Sidmouth

Jacob’s Ladder beach, located in Sidmouth, is the sandy western end of the town's mostly pebbled beach. It is backed by steep cliffs that provide shelter from the breeze and boasts a large expanse of sand with numerous rock pools to explore during low tide. Accessible via a level path from the town's main beach or through wooden steps from Connaught Gardens, this picturesque spot offers great photo opportunities, especially during the morning when the sun makes the cliffs glow beautifully.
Believe it or not, this wooden staircase connecting the beach path to the clifftop Connaught Gardens is a Grade II listed building! It was constructed in the 19th century and replaced a stairway cut into the cliff that had eroded away. I reached it by way of a scenic beachside path that begins at the western end of the prom. It's an open staircase, easy enough to climb though daunting to anyone who doesn't like heights as you can see right down to the ground through the gaps in the stairs as you ascend (not the case when you're coming down, it just feels like walking down three ordinary flights of steps). The view of the coastline when you reach the top is spectacular. There's a takeaway built into the cliff near the foot of Jacob's Ladder where you can get homemade sandwiches, pasties, ice-cream and drinks. Perfect for a picnic on the beach! They also do ice-cream for dogs. There's an alternative, more accessible route up to the gardens if you can't manage the staircase.
Valerie H — Google review
Nice beach lovely this time of year. Just been downtown and it was busy and beach was filling up. Couldn’t take many photos as I was on my motorcycle so the picture with boat in is at the other end of beach at the Ham and the other photo is at the top of Jacob’s ladder looking over the beach and town.
Paul S — Google review
Pebble beach surrounded by red soil cliffs, which are extremely dangerous at times due to rock falls. However, the east end of the beach is safe. Gentle slope into the sea, with a beautiful feeling of the Mediterranean or even Lake Como. Warm water in Summer too. Our visit was wonderful and we felt as though we were on holiday despite living only six miles away. Clock Tower Cafe is up some steep steps/ladder at the far east end, past the beach huts. A thoroughly enjoyable time here early morning but beware that it may get extremely busy at times. A fantastic beach however!
Ian H — Google review
Absolutely breathtaking. Pebble beach leading to sandy beach. My dog had a wonderful time, playing with other dogs and dipping in the rock pools. The colours of the red cliffs are absolutely mesmerising. I will certainly may be back.
Thula H — Google review
Walk around the red rocks at the end of Sidmouth to Jacobs ladder, a beautiful little beach which pops out after an interesting walk around the red rock face! Pebble/rock beach!

Lovely place and stunning views 😍 👌
Karina K — Google review
Stunning scenery, coastline, cliffs and beautiful gardens all within easy walking distance. The beauty of this area is second to none. The glorious Jurassic coast laid bare as far as the eye can see and a beautiful walk, either above the beach on the cliffs for those who don't mind a hilly adventure. Or a beautiful pebbly walk along the far stretching beach. The famous white steps which lend their name to this amazing place lead up to the wonderful Connaught Gardens, where old and young alike can enjoy a stroll or explore the different areas, all interconnected by well kept pathways and secret entrances. The gardens are stunningly well maintained and are a visual treat year round. The views of the coast are amazing from here and there are numerous benches where one can take a pitstop. And if all this is not enough to entice a visit, the amazing Clocktower Cafe, to be found within the gardens is worth a visit on its own. The views from this small but well run establishment are possibly the best views a cafe could claim to have, beautifully framed by the quaint arched windows and the decor is a delight. And as for the food... It is reasonably priced and of a very high standard, using locally sourced products where possible. And on to their cake counter.... I could not possibly describe here the mouthwatering, seemingly mile high cakes that are on display. All manner of delights and the only downside is trying to choose which one to have! The staff here are very personable and although busy, always go the extra mile to provide a friendly service. We went after 4pm and sadly the upstairs was closed but eating a piece of cake looking out across the cliffs, pebbles and sea is most certainly food for the soul as well as the stomach. ❤️

Nature & Wildlife Areas
The Byes is a picturesque riverside park that spans over a mile from the toll house at Salcombe Road to the village of Sidford in Sidmouth. It features rolling fields, grassy meadows, and the tranquil River Sid. The park offers benches for enjoying the views and wildlife, including kingfishers hunting for fish.
The byes is the perfect place to get away from the busy town and just listen to the birds and streams, I highly recommend a late night walk around 11pm-12am it's when all the wildlife starts springing out! Watch the bats fly, the foxes run around, and owls call to each other it really is a completely different experience to the day!
George S — Google review
A tranquil wooded and grass meadow running beside the River Sid from the edge of town up to Sidford. Public footpath and cycle routes give easy access through this nature reserve, which is beautiful!
Philippa B — Google review
A lovely place in the middle of Sidmouth to go for a walk and experience nature at its best. Green grass, large trees and a stream. Perfect for dog walkers and ramblers or anyone who wants to get a breath if fresh clean air.
Julie S — Google review
Lovely area to walk your dog or just to walk or ride through as it has a bike path. Beautiful on hot days as your can explore more along the fields as it’s not to wet. 🐶🐕🦮🐩🐕‍🦺🐾
Paul S — Google review
We visited the Byes on a hot day. There was plenty of shade to walk with our dog. She went in the River Sid a few times. Once, completely disappearing as it was deep. She made it out herself and shook herself off to chase her ball.
Çhristine T — Google review
A beautiful place to walk and leads straight into Sidmouth town centre with lots of lovely shops, carry on walking and you arrive at the beach....what could be better. This area is simply perfect 👌
Sl — Google review
Great place for walking dogs. Lots of places for them to run and interact with other people and dogs. River nearby is easy to access, especially in the summer.
Dan G — Google review
Well worth parking back from the seafront and taking a walk along the river. There is a footpath and cycle path that follows the river right down the the centre of Sidmouth so you can enjoy a bit of nature down through the Byes, and then enjoy the beach without having to drive through town!

The Norman Lockyer Observatory is a historical site that serves as a hub for amateur astronomy, meteorology, radio astronomy, and science education. Situated on the hills between Sidmouth and Salcombe, this observatory offers visitors the opportunity to enjoy informative talks, planetarium presentations, and explore historic telescopes and technology. With its location in an area with minimal light pollution, it provides an ideal setting for observing planets and cosmic bodies through telescopes dating back nearly two centuries.
A great day out. Really friendly volunteers and staff. Historic instruments, and a great atmosphere. A shame I'm not closer or I would visit more often.
Matthew T — Google review
What a super interesting evening. I came on the public open day. All staff were very friendly and knowledgeable. The night sky was clear with a number of different telescopes 🔭 looking at different parts of the night sky. The tour was fantastic looking back at the historical telescopes. Planetarium was probably my favourite part of the evening. It’s definitely worth the visit. Highly recommended. Thank you 🙏
Malcolm P — Google review
Great for a visit whether a family or by yourself there is a lot of history to learn about and be part of, alongside taking part in active observing if the weather is clear using Victorian and modern telescopes even if overcast touring all the detecting equipment at the Lockyer Technology Centre can be just as exciting! It’s also fantastic place to join up as a member for an annual fee, you can meet and get to know the other members and become part of the fabric of the observatory absorbing information from the members events; talks and observing workshops just to mention a few and perhaps becoming one of the volunteers during the open evening explaining how the site mixes it Victorian and modern day equipment from an orrery to a muon detector! I would be bias in saying this was probably the top attraction in East Devon and a hidden gem in the South West overall being a volunteer at the NLO but it’s true :)
Alex B — Google review
A great visit to observatory! Thanks a lot to Alex, who showed telescopes, history and planetarium! What a lovely, interesting and inspiring trip for me and my son!
Катя К — Google review
Visited the public observatory tour and perseid meteorshower evening while on holiday. It consisted of a planetarium, lecture, tours of the telescopes and technology center, stories around a campfire and of course some stargazing. Was a clear night so got to see a good few shooting stars even caught one on the mobile phone. Staff there were very knowledgeable and they have some amazing kit there. The whole event was very interesting and great for my daughter too. Would highly recommend going to one of their evenings.
Matt C — Google review
Got so much value from the tour. Only £10 and we were there for over 3 hours. There were some presentations, got to look through 2 telescopes, other monitoring systems in the technology centre and learned lots about the history of the place
Vinnie R — Google review
What a fantastic historic Observatory this is. The NLO deserves government funding to preserve the facility, and to promote it for public visits. Absolutely amazing!!

Enjoyed the Saturday matinee of Oklahoma by the local theatre group. Full house!

My family are occasional visitors to this Theatre and have enjoyed a variety of performances including some classic comedies. Pre performance drinks and intermission ice creams recommended.

How special is Sidmouth to have a very good live theatre repertory! We try to catch at least a show when we visit, and last night's rendition of Dial M for Murder was definitely quite well done. Kudos to the cast and production crew!

Sidmouth Beach is a picturesque spot with an esplanade running alongside striking red cliffs, leading to the sandy Jacobs Ladder area and Connaught Gardens. The town center offers historic pubs and seafood restaurants, while Kennaway House and Sidmouth Museum are nearby attractions. The pebble beach provides stunning views of the esplanade and red cliffs, with opportunities for swimming or simply soaking in the coastal ambiance. Visitors can also enjoy kayaking, surfing, or paddleboarding with available equipment and instruction.
Beautiful walk along the Esplanade to the clock tower. The sun was shining in between rain showers and the sea was wild. Lots of things to see in Sidmouth, it's a beautiful little town with a wide pebble beach.

Nice beach. Sand gives a lot of fun for children. The cliffs on the background offer picturesque views. Wonderful place for having fun and making great photos as well. But be careful with the tides

Excellent Sandy and Rocky beach for families. Lovely views, good access. Tide changes beach access considerably over the day so plan accordingly. Can be quite busy, but lots of spots to set up.
J M — Google review
Lovely and clean pebble beach. Pet friendly. Very short walk from the car park. Plenty of photo opportunities and Nice places to sit at Jacobs ladder beach view point and Connaught Gardens to enjoy the scenery of cliffs and the sea.
Viral M — Google review
The scenery is breathtaking. The streets are clean and tidy, with ample parking. The award winning Ice Cream shop lived up to it's reputation and everyone I met seemed friendly and helpful.
Russell D — Google review
Lovely quiet beach. Not much to do on the actual sea front. There was a small section of beach that was dog friendly which was nice. Car park a short walk away up a hill and clean toilets on the beach and just as you go in to town too
Nicky D — Google review
Stunning Scenery 💙 Beautiful Beach ⛱️ Highlights are Cliffs either End & Jacob's Ladder 🪜 + Connaught Gardens 🌳💐
Peter S — Google review
Sidmouth beach is a brilliant place at anytime of the day. It varies between pebbles and sand as the tide rises and falls and the views, especially at sunset and sunrise are spectacular. I also sighted two dolphins swimming about 200 yards off the beach but they swam back and forth for a full twenty minutes. Dolphins in the wild. Incredible. The sea is still fairly warm in October and a swim will help your body and brain regenerate it's power and throw off the fug of normal life.

The well-maintained course provides beautiful views of the surrounding countryside. Visitors can enjoy a corporate deal that includes a bacon roll and coffee, 18 holes of golf, and a delicious 2-course meal. The club's staff is known for being welcoming and friendly, making it an enjoyable place to play for both members and visitors alike.
A must play if staying near Sidmouth. The golf course is kept in great condition, the greens are excellent. The staff are welcoming and very helpful and they serve great food at good prices. A short course in yardage but plays much longer because of the hilly conditions. Definitely go back.
Jennie P — Google review
Lovely quirky little golf club with plenty of hills and par threes. Though only 5000 yards, the course is no push over. Spectacular views. Nice friendly clubhouse and great staff
David H — Google review
First time we played here and won't be the last. Probably In the top 3 clubs I've played. We had a corporate deal with bacon roll and coffee, 18 holes, and a 2 course meal after. The food and the excellent service were great. The course was in great condition and very challenging. We will definitely be back soon. Another great game today and great food before and after at a good price. Always very welcoming.

Challenging undulating course with sloping fairways and tight greens that are tricky to land on in dry conditions. Some landscaping and drainage improvements since we last played… friendly staff.
Chris W — Google review
The friendliest welcome in Devon and unique and quirky golf course. The course plays along the side of a hill so there's lots of side slopes and accuracy is at a premium. The greens were great, and a real challenge. And the views over Sidmouth and the Devon coast are magnificent.

Mutter's Moor Car Park is an ideal starting point for various walking opportunities, offering both challenging and shorter routes. The location provides a varied walk through lovely woodlands with occasional views of Sidmouth and the surrounding areas. Additionally, it offers access to the cliffs and coast path between Sidmouth and Ladram Bay. The car park is free but has a stoney surface, making it unsuitable for wheelchairs. It also features dog waste bins as its only facility.
Had a lovely walk with family, it was a lovely day & met friendly people in passing. Just a pity some paths were inaccessible because of water logged paths. 🥺🥺

A woodland car park just outside Sidmouth. Great views across the moors towards Exmouth and good for dog walkers, but not much else. The car park has a rough stoney surface that could become very muddy in wet weather. No benches for outdoor sitting, just a doggy waste bin.

Gastropub
The Anchor Inn is a traditional pub that offers delicious and hearty meals, including weekly specials. It prides itself on serving real ales and locally produced gins in a charming setting. Despite some reports of being fully booked, the staff went out of their way to accommodate customers by offering tables in the bar area. The Sunday roast is highly recommended for its mouthwatering flavors and generous portions. Despite being busy and understaffed at times, the service remained attentive and efficient.
Updated 7/02/25 Re visited again today while in area, once again food fantastic flavours and very good quantity. Pub well worth visiting for a meal when in Sidmouth. Is much larger inside than it looks from outside with plenty of seating in several different areas. Very good menu with plenty of choice and also a good range of daily specials. Service is quite fast, staff very attentive. The quality of the food is excellent and the amounts just right. Have now visited several times for lunches now and have never been disappointed.
Ian F — Google review
Great food and excellent staff. Well worth a visit (although please note, the desserts are over the top!)
Hugh R — Google review
Alot if the tables were reserved however we had a table ordered a tuna and cucumber sandwich which was doorstep thick accompanied with salad crisps and coleslaw my friend had a prawn sandwich she said it was one of the best she has ever had, also chips and onion rings. Definitely worth the money which we thought wasn't overly expensive as we also had a latte and pint of coke all for £29
Heather B — Google review
Absolutely fantastic pub and restaurant with melt in the mouth and to die for food, very friendly and helpful staff really polite and courteous who went out of their way to make sure everything was just right and that we had a great experience. The service was outstanding the whole place was clean, smart and they served top quality food at very reasonable prices, we hadn't booked a table but many tables were reserved but they still accommodated us and many others too. This restaurant is very popular and I can see why we will definitely eat their again but we may book next time so as not to be disappointed if it's busy. Congratulations and hearty top marks to the management and staff for a really great experience, well done to the whole team. 👍👍👍

My wife had cod and chips and didn't leave me any scraps whatsoever. Respect to the chef! They also provide smaller portions at a good price. I highly recommend this pub.

Always a joy to visit: the food is delicious, generous and well presented; the staff and service are excellent, very friendly and efficient; and it has a great atmosphere. It's often busy, understandably so given that it's so good, so it's wise to book a table.

Nestled in the stunning Otter Valley of East Devon, Bicton Park Botanical Gardens is a treasure trove of horticultural history that spans nearly 300 years. Covering an impressive 64 acres, this enchanting park features a delightful mix of formal gardens and greenhouses, including the remarkable Palm House with its intricate glass design.
Pick a sunny day and you'll be in for a treat. Something to do and see for all age groups. Doggy friendly too. Plenty of seats to stop at and look. Little cafe/resturant allows dogs and good selection of foods. My coronation chicken sandwich was jammed full and delicious. Bonus for the older person is the country museum, it is second to none and full of nostalgia. Worth every penny and really enjoyed my day.

This is one of Devon's best-kept secrets. It is not a National Trust property, so it doesn't benefit from their exposure and marketing. It is truly a spectacular experience. If you want to appreciate all its wonderful trees, plants, different garden styles, and plant 🪴 houses, you could easily spend a few days here. This is a botanist's paradise with some of the rarest trees and plants from all across the globe. This garden is in the top 60 for species diversity and density worldwide. There are over 1500 different tree species alone, with many among the largest in the country. Among the many attractions are a miniature railway that will take you around the estate, a museum of horticultural artefacts, and a picturesque lake. If you are visiting the West Country, this is the one attraction you must visit. There's a cafe for refreshments but only a limited selection. If you are coming for a whole day ( recommended ), I would advise having a hearty breakfast beforehand.
Martin T — Google review
This is a beautiful garden set in a landscaped area and dates back over 200 years. There is a charge to enter but you can easily spend a full day here exploring the different gardens and features. There is a narrow gauge train that takes you through the park and gardens with an additional charge but worth the cost. For younger members of the family, there is a soft play area which if you come with young children they provide a free pass and here you will also find refreshments. In the park you will find a Country museum which has some very interesting exhibits and audio visual displays. There is a good value cafe area with a wide selection of hot food and the obligatory Devon cream tea should you wish.

A beautifully maintained garden and grounds. So much interest especially the museum. Cafe serves a wide range of food and beverages at reasonable prices. Lots of activity areas for children. The miniature railway is well worth a ride for adults and children alike. Some lovely walks which are well signposted. Overall a really great place to visit.

Wow, what a beautiful place 😍 loved our visit. Stunning grounds. Loads for kids to do, including a miniature train. Really friendly staff. Dog friendly. My only one negative is the cafe, it was expensive for what you got, my JP had minimal filling.
Louisa D — Google review
We used to visit here when my children were young and it was great for them to return as adults. Expensive entry fee, but worth it if you can spend most of the day here. Beautiful gardens, arboretum and glasshouses. Shame the trees around the car park have been filled. Good food in the cafe but limited choice. Friendly and helpful staff. Absolutely wonderful collection of trees from around the world including some many national champions, veteran oaks, beeches, chestnut and others.

The Italian gardens in splendid colours and manicured lawns, dahlia beds a picture. Yes, the Autumn sunshine enhanced the colours of trees, most notably, encouraged all visitors to be cheerful and friendly. Look forward to next visit.

It's known for serving traditional pub fare and offers a charming garden with outdoor seating. The inn holds historical significance as the home of 'The King Of Chit', an annual celebration dating back to the town's fishing community. Visitors praise the delicious meals such as roasted mushroom and ale pie, handmade chicken fillet burger, and fresh salads.
Great local pub with a warm welcome and delicious food, huge portions and a roaring wood burner on a cold and stormy night! Enjoyed so much we returned for dinner the second night too! What's not to like?!

L shaped room with an adjoining room to the right. Food being served which smelt amazing. Tap beers and a few real ales available. Cash or card payments. Most of the ceiling and walls are a wooden panelling which as been painted. Wooden floor in bar, adjoining room was carpeted more like a lounge where people dined. Marquee outside at the back of the premises for outside drinking. Staff were friendly and polite. Beer was good. Enjoyed my visit.

visited a few pubs in Sidmouth and based on the one pint view - the Swan was easily the best. Felt like the interior matched the character and history of the exterior (didn’t get that from some of the other pubs). We walked in at about 7ish on a Thursday night and it was pretty much full with a lovely atmosphere. Bar staff super friendly. Good beer.

Discovered this pub on our last visit to Sidmouth when searching for a cheeky beer. Came back again and enjoyed a lovely lunch & beer. Great pub, beer was spot on & food was fab. Bar staff could not be more friendly, made us and our dog feel super welcome. Love that as you walk in you're greeted by dogs chilling whilst their owners have a drink, sets the vibe for the pub. If authentic pubs with home cooked food & great beer selection are your thing you will not be disappointed here!
Louise A — Google review
Superb home cooked food, good choice. Friendly, helpful staff, nice clean pub, outside seating to side & rear. Only criticism, and it is only a very slight one, is beer choice. Three hand pulls available on my visit; would have liked to see choice from brewers like Palmers of Bridport or Salcombe brewery, but this is a very minor niggle. Far and away the best pub in Sidmouth!

Absolutely delicious meal. Roasted mushroom and Ale pie and Handmade Chicken fillet burger. The salad was delicious with a whole variety of salad ingredients. Coleslaw was wonderful. Crunchy chips, and all piping hot. Service was wonderful and so friendly. Lovely old fashioned traditional pub. Can't recommend highly enough

Sidmouth was fully booked for food on a Saturday night. The Swan was close to our hotel and had good reviews. Fortunate to get the last table in a packed out pub. Very busy and loud but a friendly atmosphere. Was taken to a table and the menu selection was on boards on the wall. We went for deep fried whitebait and the lasagne. Huge amount of whitebait and good portion of lasagne. Both were nice. Fair price. Appreciate getting a table.

A very small river that starts near Honiton and runs to its mouth at Sidmouth. Contains trout and salmon during their appropriate season. Not the most well managed river but pleasant enough. The Byes in Sidmouth run parallel to the river near its end and is again a fairly pleasant walk. Other than the Byes there is no River walk as the river is small and runs under roads, behind private properties etc.

Sidmouth Folk Festival is an annual event that takes place in August, featuring a variety of local and international bands, dancers, and storytellers. Additionally, the town hosts the Sidmouth Literary Festival in June and the Sidmouth Regatta at the end of August. Attendees can enjoy a diverse range of activities and performances throughout the week at different locations around the town.
Fantastic huge marquee, all seated for some of the shows, this year featuring the wonderful Fisherman's Friends 2 days before the actual week long festival kicked off. Wonderful array of different acts throughout the week in many different locations round the town. Already looking forward to 2025.
Alan P — Google review
Last year’s festival was amazing. However this years wasn’t as good. The water on the campsite had an unknown infection for the Wednesday/Thursday. The amount of toilets want good either, with them also being at the bottom of the tent side field, with two trailers worth. The showers being next to the toilets meant that sometimes you couldn’t wash your hands, so having to use the drinking water tap and not knowing what you were actually putting on your hands. At the Ham, sometimes you couldn’t even flush the toilets. When performing the the Blackmore marquee, backstage felt very exposed and one night I saw a parent using it as a space to try to stop their child screaming (I know it was the family ceilidh but the kids who were in the band that night had spent time to practise tunes, some of them knowing no other members of the band before. Also there was not space for the performers of large bands to get the chance to watch the spots if they went to deal with other important tasks like filling up water bottles and going to the toilet. It was nice that there as a backstage toilet as it meant that you didn’t have to wait in the queue of the rest of the ceilidh dancers. However the rest of the festival was amazing and I cannot wait to be back next year.

Nestled in the serene landscapes of Devon, The Donkey Sanctuary in Sidmouth is a delightful destination for families, especially those with children aged 4 to 10. This remarkable sanctuary is home to over 500 donkeys, many of whom have been rescued from difficult situations. Visitors can freely explore the expansive grounds and interact with these gentle creatures in the main donkey yard. The sanctuary features an outdoor play area themed around farm life and a fun maze that promises hours of entertainment for kids.
Spotted signposted on our way to Sidmouth and decided to swing by on our way back and very happy we did. It was a lovely place to drop by at and a big place to walk around leisurely. Loads of donkeys all over the place and a fun little maze. Free entrance but we made a donation and bought some bits on their shop as it goes towards a nice cause looking after them and provides a nice place to come if you are in the area. Recommend it and if in the area again I am sure we would swing by again as like I say, was a nice place to walk around if nothing else. We went on a Saturday afternoon and was easy to park and not too busy. Relatively flat under foot, not that it mattered to us but just letting you know if you have any walking issues.

Great place. Definitely recommend coming here. Free entry and you can donate to help out. Donkeys were lovely and funny when one started issues with another donkey for smelling poo. They do sound like they have sore throats from all the noises they make 😂. Beautiful place tho and good clean toilets

I just had to meet Walter! The donkey whom my husband had gifted an adoption from The Donkey Sanctuary. I was expecting an old fashioned set up but I was totally wrong. The entrance is modern, well kept and clean. It is all well organised and the lovely people who work and volunteer, are well informed and willing to answer questions. We sat through a lovely informative talk where we watched the donkeys like a heard of cattle go back into the main barn that had fresh hay. They are such gentle animals, well worth the visit. It caters for all ages and with plenty of car parking spaces too. Definitely would recommend

What a beautiful location! There are so many well-cared-for donkeys, and we enjoyed an informative talk from one of the staff members. The hedge maze and play area for children provide great fun for everyone. There is plenty of seating around the park and fields. The restaurant was very popular, with a big queue leading into the main area. The food is excellent and offers amazing value for money, with huge cups of coffee. All the staff were working very hard. How is this place free? The shop has a wide range of items, all at low prices. It’s just fantastic! We will definitely be back soon.

Wonderful example of conservancy & protection of these gentle creatures. See many donkeys living in grassy fields and close up in their pens. Great layout of viewing walks all signposted with donkey info. Children will love it. Tea rooms and lunches also served.
Dale T — Google review
What a gem this is. A peaceful, tranquil site with c.200 donkeys roaming the many paddocks. Good restaurant, gift shop, educational area and things for kids including a surprisingly tricky maze. Highly recommended way to spend an afternoon, with your dogs if you like also. Just remember to donate as the place is free entry.
J W — Google review
Amazing place to visit. Facilities are great for visitors and Donkeys! The staff are excellent. The talk at shelter 1 when we went was very interesting and also entertaining when one naughty Donkey nibbled and undid the shoelace of the handler doing the talk. I never knew Donkeys cannot take much weight at all despite everything you see on screen and TV! Its well worth a visit. Entry is free! But please donate to such a good cause. We were visiting our adopted Donkey, Ashley on the day but the walks around the massive grounds are great to do and the cafe is well worth a stop off after too!

The Clock Tower in Sidmouth is a charming spot to unwind and enjoy delicious food and drinks. The tea rooms offer stunning views, especially from the tables up in the tower. Visitors can explore the gardens, take in the cliffside scenery, and even visit Jacobs Ladder nearby. While some found the menu limited to pre-made items like baguettes and sausage rolls, others appreciated the generous portions and tasty treats like carrot cake.
Wow! What an absolutely stunning cafe/reataurant! Location: Seaview hilltop with indoor & outdoor seating and beautiful gardens. Food: Big selection of freshly made cakes, baked & scones as well as a delicious hot & cold menu. I ordered the most delicious hot chocolate (the I’ve had personally) Customer service: outstanding 5* service, all of the staff are so friendly & welcoming. Met the owners who are the friendliest people. The place is clean, tidy even though it’s quite busy they keep up with the demand so well. Food & drinks came out in good time, views from the indoor & outdoor seating is so astonishing. It’s a local gem. HIGHLY recommend!

First visit to this café and can’t believe we’ve never been before, truly a hidden gem. Beautiful views from the seating area inside of the sea and red cliffs (not included to protect fellow customer privacy) and a lovely little garden with seating outside. It was quite busy, we were lucky to be able to snag a table inside on lower floor but there is more seating upstairs. As it was busy we could tell the staff were in a hurry taking orders etc but everyone we interacted with were perfectly pleasant and friendly despite the rush. I can understand some might not like feeling rushed but it was so busy and is quite a small space by the tills I don’t know what else you expect. We really liked our food, cakes and bakes all looked so good and the ones we got tasted amazing. Not the cheapest but generous portions and clearly fresh and perfectly made. We’ll definitely be back 😊

Nice cafe with stunning views. Cakes are delicious and the service is very good. It is dog friendly place. When we were there at least two clients came with their dogs. The cafe offers nice seating options outside, in the garden itself

This cafe and location are breathtaking and the outside and indoor seating let you enjoy both. We ordered an English breakfast tea, Cappuccino, flat white and hot chocolate. The hot chocolate can with a choice of dark, white or milk and all the drinks were perfect! There were plenty of cakes but we opted for the scone, Victoria sponge and raspberry and white chocolate blondie. The portions were satisfying and the raspberries in the blondie were full or flavour. Staff were friendly and attentive and the seating inside and outside was comfortable. Will definitely be returning when in the area.

Neat little cafe. Nicely presented seating in conservatory with coastal view and sunny outdoor walled gardens. Glad they served matcha. Generous sized pieces of cake, but the pistachio cake had too much almond essence for my liking. Coffee and walnut cake definitely recommended!
Golden B — Google review
There can be no denying that the Clock Tower serves up some fantastic food in a fantastic setting - with incredible views. But it was the service today that left a bit of sour taste for us. Walking into the empty cafe, there were no less than five staff behind the counter, and not a single customer in sight. Whether the café had just opened or not, I’ve no idea, but we stood there waiting like lemons to be served or for any sort of acknowledgement. We even contemplated walking away. Even if not ready for us, a quick “bear with us” would have made the world of difference - and would have been preferred to being ignored entirely. Understandably, food and drinks are paid for in advance, and staff asked us to choose a tip amount. The quality of service wasn’t deserving of a tip, however. The food was very good and the prices acceptable. But based on the less than brilliant service, we would be unlikely to return.
Mike K — Google review
As usual as per our at least annual visits to Sidmouth, a visit to the Clock Tower (CT)represents a highlight and must do each trip. Situated within the beautiful Connaught gardens with their abundance and wide range of flowers, The CT provides the perfect place to relax with good coffee, tea( wide range of choice) and delicious cakes, before or after ( or both) a walk around the fauna or for the more adventurous, a walk down Jacob's ladder to the sandy beach with waves lapping onto the red sands. Equally welcoming if the tides out are the numerous rock pools to explore and very large expanse of sand to enjoy, children especially love the experience. The CT is perfectly placed to offer respite at any point during your day at the seaside, offering a wide array of home baked cakes, scones and savouryfoodstuffs that will delight any connoisseur of tasty fare. I love good coffee and that's guaranteed here.

A stunning venue with a wonderful view of the coast. Lovely staff who were very helpful. A great menu with plenty of veggie and vegan options. I was slightly disappointed to find the "vegan breakfast " had drastically changed from years previous which I had held as the best breakfast I'd had (especially missing the homemade beans), with a better description now being scrambled tofu and mushrooms on toast. Having said food was still nice, and would fully recommend to anyone in the local area and can't wait to visit again.

The museum features an enormous display of Sylvanian Families, along with a wide variety of other toys such as Lego, dolls, games, Star Wars memorabilia, and cars. Visitors can also enjoy huge working train displays and engaging quizzes for children with prizes at the end. The museum was started by a local man who shared his personal toy collection from his childhood.
I really enjoyed this small museum, it was like stepping back in time with toys dating back from the 1940 , 50 , 60 , 70 and the my own childhood memories of the 80s. It’s a small museum but packed full and it’s definitely worth a visit. It will make you smile 😊, thank you to all staff members very friendly and full of information.

Excellent collection of various toys, in an old chapel /church. It very interesting and lots to look at, there were quiz sheets to do. It was extremely busy due to the bad weather so quite difficult to spend time looking at the displays as I was holding people up as the aisles were narrow, Not wheel chair friendly due to the size of the building and narrow aisles. No parking but paid parking nearby. Still glad we made the effort to go. (no toilets but they were public ones near by)

This museum is a real find. It is packed full of toys and exhibits and it has clearly been curated as a labour of love by its creators. The interactive displays and quizzes really added to our enjoyment of the museum. It was really fun to see some of the toys from our childhood and our daughter was delighted by some of the old toys, especially the original Lego mini figures. There's something for everyone here. Don't miss it as we have never seen such an extensive and delightful exhibition of childhood toys.

What a wonderful museum for young and old. So nostalgic for older folk spotting cars we used to drive (models), toys and games we used to play with and trains we used to ride on. So many things for kids to spot and great model railways that even the youngest will enjoy watching. Sidmouth Town Beach is a delightful gem nestled in the charming seaside town of Sidmouth, Devon. This beach is a favorite spot for picnics, where you can savor your sandwiches while listening to the soothing sounds of waves gently lapping at the shore. On sunny summer days, it buzzes with activity as families spread out their towels and enjoy quality time together. This is a nice wide beach with nice laid back atmosphere with some decent shops. Plenty for all the family to do including body boarding and surfing in high season. There is also the Jacob’s laser and also some nice gardens to stroll around or have a picnic added to this parking is not too expensive and can also get some free street parking if out of season or early.

Really lovely day here. From Kent , so was only a visitor passing through. But along promenade bit there are buskers dotted about singing every genre it felt like. Market was lovely. Couple of stalls I really wish I’d come back to. Seemed to be a few more locals about here. You know who’s local with how friendly they are and willing to give information and local advice. We’d wanted to walk along the bit that’s closed off at mo. Obviously we wouldn’t have gone in there as was closed off but a local man did just explain it was closed due to cliff falls in recent weather and that we’d be better off the opposite end of the town. We did walk up to the other end (not far) and had a lovely time (even saw some Morris dancers)

This is a great seaside town with a lovely beach it is mainly large pebbles but there is some sand when the tide goes out towards the Jacobs ladder end...The beach always looks clean,we actually see some locals litter picking...Well done you,it a shame that there is litter to pick up in the first place there are a lot of people in this country that do not respect our beautiful island and leave rubbish everywhere they go..I would love to dump it back in there gardens...Now back to the beach the sea is lovely and clear also...Overall a great place to visit......Another visit on a very stormy day,as you will see by my photos the sea was quite rough throwing sand and pebbles across the promenade....With people and children standing there and getting soaking wet.....A bit silly if you ask me as they could have been hit on the head with some of th pebbles being thrown into the air....

Historic building with long a history, all documented on info boards inside. Bookings are available. A lift operates on all the floors, so ideal for the less abled.

Lovely venue for a private party, friendly staff who go out of their way to be helpful. The building itself is lovely, spacious and airy but small enough to provide an intimate venue for all sorts of events. There's a lot going on the rest of the time, always worth popping in to find out what's on!

My Husband and I were recently married at Kennaway House on 3rd September 2022. Our Special day was magical from start to finish. Nikki the manager of the house allowed myself the bride to get ready at Kennaway before the ceremony. We had a photographer and videographer there to capture the preparation of me getting my hair done and dressed. Once I was ready, soon after the guests started to arrive and it gave me the chance to see them all without them knowing. Being able to get ready at the house meant so much to me. I think it settled the grooms nerves too knowing I was there ready to make my grand entrance. We celebrated our whole day at the house using the cellar for our wedding breakfast and reception in the evening. Doing this made our day run so smoothly. Our guests even told us that our wedding was the best they had ever been to. The venue is so close to the seafront and Connaught Gardens that we managed to slip away for a short amount of time, to get some private photos taken with our photographer and videographer. We can't recommend Kennaway House enough for the perfect place in Sidmouth to be married. Thank you so much Nikki and Kennaway House for having us. Mr & Mrs Mitchell

Very disappointed, came to see my child's art work as displayed in this building, should have been open, all signs out but doors locked, no one answered the phone and lights off. Really disappointed. No note to say closed for emergency or anything.

Just had a wonderful mid morning treat with friends at this beautiful house. We had freshly brewed coffee with a slice of carrot and passionfruit cake! Delicious. Service was excellent and the surroundings lovely. To top it off they used real china cups/saucers/plates 😁 I would highly recommend! Monday-Friday 10am-3pm till March

We had our wedding ceremony at Kennaway house in September 2020. I can't rate it highly enough. Nikki was so welcoming and helpful, paying such attention to detail. The house itself is beautiful and perfect for photos. We didn't want a big room that our small number of guests would be swamped by and it was just perfect. There was full disabled access and parking too which was important for us and the Devon Registrars ceremony was brilliant. A total hidden gem, particularly for smaller weddings.

Jacobs Ladder Beach Kiosk is a charming and exotic spot with a delightful tower cafe offering fabulous food and large cakes. It's a beautiful place to visit regardless of the weather, with relaxing walks down to Jacobs Ladder beach or nearby Chit Rocks. Visitors can also explore Connaught Gardens for peaceful surroundings and amazing views. The area offers plenty of chargeable parking, making it a great place to spend the day exploring.
A place of wonder and beauty. The sound of the sea on pebbles is a cleansing experience, well it was for me. Very charming with an oddly exotic tone. The tower cafe (think that's what it is called is a delight. The food was fab and the cakes are a sight for sore eyes, never seen such large cakes before. I had a rock bun the size of a small cake and it was the real thing. Lush.

A beautiful place regardless of the weather, so relaxing once walking down the steps onto Jacobs Ladder beach or nearby Chit Rocks, if you prefer, you could walk further upwards to see the most amazing views or even walk around the Connaught Gardens, so peaceful whatever you decide to do, plenty of chargeable parking close by too & a great place to spend the day exploring.

Brilliant little field where your dog can run and play securely and safely. Love that you can just have your dog on their own. Water available and tunnels etc to mix it up a bit. 2nd time we have been there and will certainly book it again.

Myself and my pooch love Unleashed. My dog literally drags me up the hill to get there. He is a Romanian rescue and can be nervous around some strangers. Unleashed has become our special place where we can train and have fun together whilst feeling secure. We’ve invited friends along and we recently celebrated his year anniversary with a pawty and a picnic in the beautiful Devon Countryside. 🐾💕

Amazing. I'm a professional dog walker from Berkshire and was staying in Sidmouth with my four dogs. I use exercise fields local to me, but none reach the standards of Unleashed. Love all the facilities - my guys loved the tunnel and mounds the best. The shower with proper drainage is a great addition - very useful during those winter months. Will definitely be back when we next visit Sidmouth.

Unleashed Core hill is the absolute perfect place to walk / train our dogs in the knowledge that they are safe and relaxed at all times. The facilities are excellent, to have water, shower and bins for dog waste means you can walk, run and play securely in all weathers. The added benefit of a picnic table with umbrella means that owners also have comfort when needed. Thank you and well done on providing an excellent and safe environment. Simply the best and safest place to exercise your pets.

Sidmouth Ford is a unique and timeless human creation that offers an alternative way to enter the charming town of Sidmouth. It's located along the east Devon coast and provides a fascinating experience for visitors. The area around the ford is perfect for foraging, with meadows by the river Sid offering edible treasures. Visitors can also enjoy a sensory garden nearby, making it a delightful place to explore. However, cyclists should be cautious as the ford can become slippery during wet weather.
I love Sidmouth, its one of my favourite places along the east Devon coast. We had a wonderfully damp sunday, spring afternoon, foraging with a lovely earthy lady called Liza, learning all things edible in the meadows in the Byers by the river Sid. We walked through the town looking for coffee! We found Mocha open on the sea-front. And meandered back along the river finding a surprising but rather spended sensory garden, where I am afraid we did some more foraging! But not too much. Over the Ford bridge and back to the car. All in all a lively place to spend some time. If you drive a little further towards Budleigh Salterton, you pass another garden on the hill with a tea room and further still wonderful walks and of course 4 miles or so west, on the same road, Otterton, my favourite place in the world, and I've been around a bit! Enjoy it all...💜

Located conveniently next to Peacock Lawn, Sidmouth Library is a valuable resource for the community. Additionally, visitors can enjoy amenities such as free computer use, complimentary tea or coffee for a donation, and a selection of books.

The 'quiet room' has people in there talking to each other, there's not even a set or doors or a sound dampening curtain to stop the shouting of staff communicating with people hard of hearing (I understand this is a necessity but you can't say a room is quiet when this is happening). There is no disabled toilet for the use of children or disabled people like myself which is disgustingly disrespectful and ableist tbh, I had to go and wee elsewhere which is painful for me to even walk far. Completely Ableist. The only reason I've given two star's is because Carol was amazingly helpful in getting me to a near toilet.
Jasmin C — Google review
I was on holiday and needed to print something. Really helpful staff and happy to pay a small amount to use their PCs and printing facilities. My boy had grazed his knee outside and they went above and beyond, showing concern and providing some wipes and plasters. For me the whole experience just shows how valuable local libraries are for every community and why we need to fight to keep them!
Patrick R — Google review
I have used the library for borrowing books (including ordered books), printing documents or just for sitting and reading. The online system is easy to use for renewing and for ordering books. The staff are always welcoming and helpful. There is also a rack of coats and jackets available for those in need to take free of charge.
Steve S — Google review
The staff tried to help but couldn’t explain how to use the ebook apps recommended by the library as they hadn’t been “trained”. Surely if an app is to used by the public it should be intuitive and not require training. It was suggested we come back another day to see if other staff were able to explain how the two recommended apps worked. We are not unintelligent and regularly use dozens of apps. So why is the libraries app so counterintuitive that staff can’t use it?

Jacob’s Ladder beach in Sidmouth is a picturesque spot with a historic wooden staircase that dates back to the 19th century. This Grade II listed staircase connects the clifftop Connaught Gardens to the beach path, offering stunning views along the way. The beach is dog-friendly during certain times of the year and features ample parking, shops, cafes, and restaurants nearby.

Nice beach lovely this time of year. Just been downtown and it was busy and beach was filling up. Couldn’t take many photos as I was on my motorcycle so the picture with boat in is at the other end of beach at the Ham and the other photo is at the top of Jacob’s ladder looking over the beach and town.
Paul S — Google review

"The Bears" are a collection of five wooden carved figures located near Back Brook in Newton Poppleford. One of the bears, the largest one, can be seen fishing by the brook and has even caught a rubber duck. Many people enjoy catching a glimpse of these charming figures while passing through on their way to Exeter, although there isn't a designated stopping area for visitors to get out and take a closer look.
