The Pantheon of the Duchess of Sevillano is a stunning Byzantine-style structure built in the 1880s to honor Maria Diega Desmaissieres' father and relatives. Nestled among lush trees, this 19th-century architectural gem showcases Italian art influences. Inside, visitors can admire a blend of paintings, sculptures, and tombs. The interior boasts an amazing Byzantine style that captivates visitors.
We visited on a weekday, so it was really quiet and there weren’t many people around. I really love it. It’s very well-kept, the surrounding area (garden) is very well-maintained. It’s free entry, you can access the path towards the pantheon and visit the surrounding grounds. You can also enter the pantheon, though you’d need to buy a ticket for that. Sadly they only accept cash. The grounds around the pantheon is beautiful; strolling around the garden and spending the day there with a book in one hand is a good idea whenever you’re around the area. Recommended to go on weekdays for sure, to really absorb the tranquil atmosphere.

(Translated by Google) It's worth a visit. Magnificent both inside and out. Beautiful interior decoration with mosaic floors and neo-Byzantine ceilings. In my humble opinion, the fact that you can't take photos after paying the entrance fee seems a bit harsh in these times. Since it's private, they charge a little more and allow photos. Palacio de la Cotilla, a Renaissance palace from the 17th century, is a gem in the heart of the old town. Once owned by the Marquises of Villamejor, it reflects the noble taste of its time. The Chinese hall is a major draw, showcasing a 19th-century rice paper depicting feudal life in Imperial China. This cultural and artistic center offers classes in painting, piano, guitar, and ceramics.

(Translated by Google) We really liked the Cotilla Palace because you can see how a building with many years of history still has a historic element, like the Chinese Room, something unique and very special, and a modern and contemporary element that features paintings and various educational classes. We definitely have to thank the guide at the door with the tickets. When we asked her the name of the palace, she told us the whole story and explained all the details of the Chinese Room, which are quite a few. Noticing various details and with someone knowledgeable about the subject, it's truly a luxury to be able to see the graphic representation of the history of Chinese society in such detail on its walls. You can see the different social classes through their clothing and armor. Truly beautiful. I recommend it.

Don Luis De Lucena Chapel is a 16th-century gem located near the cathedral. The chapel's brick facade is striking, but the real treasure lies inside with its Mannerist frescos adorning the vaulted ceilings. These frescos depict biblical scenes and are a testament to the owner's Christian heritage. Despite its small size, the chapel holds significant historical and architectural value, making it a must-visit in Guadalajara.
Entrance is 1€. And it's very pretty inside. Small but very historic.

(Translated by Google) Beautiful chapel with spectacular frescoes on its ceilings. The frescoes represent images of passages from the Bible, with them Luis Lucena wanted to imply that both he and his family were Christians since they came from a Jewish-converted family. The place is small since it is the only chapel that remains standing from an old church. The girl who attended us was very nice and gave us a very interesting explanation about its history. You can also go up to a small room via a narrow spiral staircase that provides spectacular views of the frescoes from a very close perspective. It is worth the visit and the climb up that narrow staircase. Highly recommended visit if you visit Guadalajara. Don't leave without seeing it.

(Translated by Google) The Luis de Lucena Chapel, originally called Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles or Urbina, is a chapel located in Guadalajara (Spain). It was ordered to be built in the mid-16th century by the humanist Luis de Lucena and, originally, it was attached to the church of San Miguel until its demolition in 1887, when the chapel was left as an isolated building. In the second decade of the 20th century, after having been acquired by the State, it was restored following the project designed by the architect Ricardo Velázquez Bosco. Since then it served as a warehouse for the Provincial Monuments Commission to store works of art, artistic pieces and archaeological finds. However, it was not until the end of the century when it was equipped with the necessary interpretive elements so that the plasterwork of the Orozco chapel, the recumbent sculptures of Juan Sánchez de Oznayo and his wife, and some fragments of the tombs of the counts of Tendilla could be displayed with dignity. The chapel enjoys a rich symbology that is developed in both its constructive and decorative elements, the final result of which is a risky aesthetic program: a Mannerist licenza, positioned in the dialectic then open on the layout, form and dimensions of the primitive and disappeared Temple of Solomon. On the outside it has a fortress character suggested by the crenellated cylindrical bastions, its ashlar base, the arrangement of the bricks at the top –simulating the braiding of sapling baskets–, the loopholes and the windows inserted in an eave of complicated geometry. Furthermore, the latter show a Davidic psalm in the edge of their limestone gutter. All those elements and construction material, beyond the Mannerist exercise, relate this sacred place to the fortress churches of the French Midi, more than to the Hispanic Mudejar.

The Torreón del Alamín is a venerable 12th-century tower that formed part of the defensive wall surrounding medieval Guadalajara. Located in the El Alamin neighborhood, it is a highlight of the city and features an attached bridge constructed in the 13th century. Once guarding a secondary entrance over the ravine, it now serves as an exhibition space showcasing the history of medieval Guadalajara.

(Translated by Google) The Alamín Tower, also known as the Alamín Keep, is a historic tower located in Guadalajara, Spain. It forms part of the remains of the old medieval wall that protected the city and is situated on the north side of the wall, overlooking the Alamín ravine, behind the Co-cathedral of Santa María. Originally, it guarded access to the city from the Alamín suburb. The tower has a square floor plan and rises approximately twenty meters from its base at the bottom of the ravine. It is constructed of mortar and masonry, with walls almost two meters thick. It has two floors, connected by a narrow spiral staircase. The main entrance is on the south side, at street level, through a simple lintel doorway. On the upper floor, on the same side, there is a doorway with a semicircular arch that was the original entrance to the tower. On the north side, facing the Alamín district, two small lookout balconies open onto the upper floor, and several loopholes can be seen in the walls. Historically, the tower was part of the reinforced and renovated city walls built between the 13th and 14th centuries. It provided access, via the Puente de las Infantas (Bridge of the Princesses), to the Alamín district, the city's main Muslim quarter, located to the northeast. In the 16th century, it lost its military function and was used as a hospital. On May 23, 1921, it was declared a National Monument. In 2004, it reopened to the public as an interpretation center for the walls of Guadalajara, housing a permanent exhibition about the medieval city, including a scale model showing the defensive layout of the old city. The tower's architectural ensemble is complemented by the Puente de las Infantas, built at the end of the 13th century by the Infantas Isabel and Beatriz, ladies of Guadalajara, to facilitate access to the Convent of San Bernardo. The Alamín Tower is one of the few remaining vestiges of Guadalajara's medieval city wall, along with the Bejanque Gate and the Álvar Fáñez Tower. These structures bear witness to the city's historical and defensive importance in bygone eras. Today, the Alamín Tower is a tourist attraction that offers visitors the opportunity to learn about Guadalajara's medieval history and appreciate the defensive architecture of the period. Its location and structure allow one to understand the strategic importance it held in protecting the city.

Palacio del Infantado is a stunning Gothic-style palace in Guadalajara, built in 1480. It has a rich history, having hosted two notable royal weddings. The former Palace of the Dukes of Infantado was damaged during the Spanish Civil War but has been beautifully restored. The museum inside showcases local art and history, with a dramatic courtyard as its centerpiece. The ornate facade and beautiful interior with Renaissance decor make it a must-see attraction.
The only place we visited whenviaiting Guadalajara. Very interesting place and beautiful. They have a printed paper with the information about the items you cannot miss there. I believe that is the only English version information there. No issue with that, you can still spend time and explore it. Free entrance.

The former Palace of the Dukes of Infantado was built in the 15th century and badly damaged in the Spanish Civil War of the 1930's. A video in the museum shows the extent of the damage and the neglect of the building later. But now it has been beautifully restored with the spectacular inner courtyard , the Patio de Leones, as a marvelous centre piece The museum is nice with some interesting details like some painted ceilings. There is also the beautiful marble tomb of Duchess Aldonza de Mendoza who died in 1435. It looks like she could wake up any moment When I visited, early January 2023, the entrance was free but that may have had to do with the holiday season.

(Translated by Google) Fortress of Andalusian origin built in the 9th century. During its first period, it served as a military base for the Muslims who were in constant battles with the Christian Kingdoms of the north. After the conquest of Guadalajara in 1085, the castle was rebuilt and remodeled, becoming the place of residence of the Castilian kings. During the 14th century it reached its greatest splendor with Alfonso XI, converting it into a Mudejar-style royal palace. During the reign of the Catholic Monarchs it was known as Peso de la Harina. In 1460, Henry IV captured Guadalajara, expelling the Mendoza family from the city. At this time, the fortress was quite destroyed, which led to the construction of the Infantado Palace as a place of royal residence. After this, the fortress remains in ruins, being used as a barracks for the Communards of Castile, being almost entirely destroyed by the troops of Charles I. It was later used as a Cloth Factory in the 18th century. In the 19th century, the San Carlos and Santa Isabel barracks were installed on the site, later it was used as a School for War Orphans, and finally as an Aerostation Battalion. During the Civil War it was used as a barracks by the national side, being bombed by the republican side, causing the almost complete destruction of the castle. It is currently in a state of restoration and archaeological excavations have been carried out to study and understand the different rooms of the construction.

Beautiful, tranquil place to hike and swim (both in the rio and laguna). There’s an old restaurant overlooking the waterfall which is a great way to end the day. Tip: keeps maps open while entering as signal tends to disappear once your in the park. There’s a lot of rocky ‘wrong turns’ to to take!

This park offers great views on canyons and sandstone or limestone cliffs. It is however quite large and not so easy, as it seems to get around: good roads that are navigable by normal cars are scarce and distances between for instance several miradors are simply to large to do it by walking. Furthermore: there seems to be no accurate hiking maps available (which is common in Spain) and paths are marked/signposted in a confusing, ambiguous or otherwise unclear way. We encountered a "red" path from which 2 other "red" paths branched off, each with it's own code - but that is meaningless when a map with all the codes and trajectories is not available. In some other places, marking was very poor and sketchy - more for insiders then for tourists that are not familiar with the park. Again, this is common practice in Spain. They seem to have big difficulties with creating or issuing appropriate hiking maps, which you would need to get around in such an extensive area independently by foot. The information point in Zaorejas was very helpful with English-speaking staff, and pointed out some directions that really helped in getting our way in the park. But: again no good hiking map, the only map available was small and ambiguous without colours or code and too large a scale. No better hiking maps, and also poor marking of trails. We didn't understand it: creating a lot of very well equipped information centers, a proper website and creating publicity but more or less ignoring the core business: how to get around? Where to hike? And providing good maps. We have hiked in Italy, Austria, Chech Republic, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro, Rumania, Bulgaria and even the Ukrain and everywhere they understand the importance of an accurate, small scale hiking map and proper marking/signposting of trails. Except Spain. It is the core business of parks that aim on outdoor experience and hiking. That is much more important then 3D video experiences of the regional vulture population in the information center. We therefore wonder whether this and other nature parks in Spain operate on the right priorities. I want to conclude with a positive note: it IS a beautiful nature parc, with spectacular views and miradors.

In the center of the city of Guadalajara in Spain you will find a special place of peace and tranquility. Usually the place is empty and you can feel the spirit of the holy, a great sensation of relax and hilling. The main wall is decorated with beautiful images of catholic themes. On the sides there are sculptures of Saint Merry and of Jesus Christ. Surely if you are a person of faith you will feel here at home.

The Museo de Guadalajara, located in the Palacio del Infantado, is a captivating destination offering a diverse collection of archaeological artifacts, fine arts, and ethnographic exhibits that provide valuable insights into the region's rich history. Visitors can admire beautiful paintings on the ceiling and explore a charming inner yard. The museum also boasts impressive architecture and offers free entry on Saturday mornings.
The only place we visited whenviaiting Guadalajara. Very interesting place and beautiful. They have a printed paper with the information about the items you cannot miss there.

Hiking area
Las Cárcavas is a stunning geological wonder located near the border of Madrid and Guadalajara, making it an ideal day trip for nature enthusiasts. This unique site features impressive formations created by erosion in conglomerate and arkosic rocks, shaped over time by the Arroyo de la Lastra. While reaching Las Cárcavas can be a bit tricky, many travelers find that taking the longer route offers breathtaking views that make the journey worthwhile.
I attended this hike with a group and was really glad I went. It started off pretty easy but definitely became challenging as time wore on. Be sure to take lots of water and some food for breaks.

OK it’s tricky to get to. And those that say the indirect route gives you a greater ‘wow’ moment are correct. So getting there: This is designed to help with what I know and what we got wrong. We took the long way round to approach it from above. It was painful but worth it. Park at the ponton de la Olivia or at the Bar Chuleta. Across the road from Ponton go straight towards the Dam. You cannot cross the dam so you need to go right before you reach it. Then down towards Bar Chuleta and follow the track road. Through the gate (see pics). Then when the road bears left you can take the path which goes straight on. Now here is your decision. After a few hundred metres the path goes slightly left and up or slightly right and down, if you take the right and down path, it’s the most direct route. It’s steep and hard (we came back that way) it’s was dry, so only dust slip rather than rain slip. Then you simply keep heading up, eventually it will bring you to the brim of a hill where you can see the Las Cavernas from below, so it’s just the arduous task to keep going. This route looses the wow factor we got, but whilst it’s a hard climb, it’s shorter and not so hard to get lost, especially as you are essentially walking in a straight line from the Bar. We however too the slightly left fork thinking it would be a shortcut to the track road which was meandering. This in hindsight may have been a mistake, we do not know, because our mistake may have happened later. Anyway, we followed the path which took us up alongside the left hand side of the dry river valley, we reached the aqueduct back on the track road and took a small path that went right, which was the direction we needed to go. It took as up high, BUT we needed to descend into the valley to go back up the other side of the valley. This was hard and rather dangerous and took several hours of going through hard thistles, trees, and serious drops which we had to go around. It was rough, a lot of cuts and scratches. Once in the valley we went back up the other side, which while steep was straightforward along a path. Until the final section which involved some climbing/walking using whatever was available for balance and leverage. However once at the top we reached the old stone house (you can see from the valley), and from there it was simple to navigate a few hundred metres to las cavernas. Exhausted, bloodied, aching, covered in flies it was worth it. Will I do it again? Maybe but I’d need a different route… I hope this helps.

Great place for hiking. It's quite a climb to get up there but was worth it. Careful with the path...it's not marked and easy to take the wrong turn.

Very nice place. Struggled a bit to get there but looking at Google maps satellite images we could see the car tracks that took us 500 mts from las cárcavas and walked from there. Recommended combining with a late lunch afterwards in patones de arriba.

Such a beautiful place!! The zone of las carcavas is really a blast, it is kind of magical to see and to visit. Is perfect to spend the whole day, you have much things to see, the area around las carcavas is also beautiful, I recomend this place for all nature lovers!! I just give 4 stars to it because I feel they could put more signs on the road, is a bit difficult to understand where's the best place to park the car, so I would recomend you to park in pontón de la oliva and them walk the rest of the way, is maybe 3/4km
