Nestled in the heart of Malatya, the Malatya Museum is a captivating destination for history enthusiasts and curious travelers alike. This museum showcases an impressive array of archaeological artifacts that span from prehistory to more recent times, offering a glimpse into the rich tapestry of local culture and history. Visitors can explore detailed exhibits that highlight significant findings from nearby sites like Arslantepe, where some of the earliest known metalwork was discovered, including what is believed to be the world's first sword.
Well worth the visit Entrance fee: 20TL September 2022 Entrance free if you have Museum Card The explanations next to displayed items contain detailed historical information. Especially for the findings discovered around Arslantepe. (Covers mostly 4000-2000 BC period)I have learned here that the first ever sword in the world was made around this area. The ancient people were good with metals even at those times. The entrance on Google maps is misplaced. It shows the staff parking entrance. You should use the entrance from the Kernek Square next to the mosque

Must visit. There are a lot of things that part of Malatya history
Elektro D — Google review
Unfortunately, there's not a huge amount to see, but there are the least interesting of the oldest known swords in the world. The best from the find are in Ankara. There's a few other interesting bits and bobs but probably the least of the museum's I've been to in the last month in Turkey.
Jamie H — Google review
Shows the enormous history of this area. Impressive
Andre P — Google review
Nice displays of nearby archaeological sites, mostly Arslantepe but also a few others. Not a lot to see but nicely laid out and plenty of information, in English too. Friendly guards. Some of the major finds from Arslantepe have been taken to Ankara.

Since Malatya has abundant and rich resources in terms of archaeological and ethnographic works, a museum building has been needed. The museum, taken into service in 1969 is a temporary building was moved in 1979 to its new place near Kernek Park, whose construction was started in 1975. Information Relating to the Works in the Museum The number of the works re - arranged and taken into exhibition in the museum is 15.518. In the museum, the fossils found in especially the sand mines or sand rocks in Malatya region, Neolithic, Calcolithic, Bronze Period finds; Hittite, Urartu, Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk and Ottoman Period works are exhibited. In the areas under Karakaya Dam Lake in the provincial borders of Malatya, some of the works obtained from Pirot, Caferhöyük, Köşkerbaba, İmamoğlu and Değirmentepe Tumulus, Arslantepe Tumulus are given hereunder: Neolithic small sculptures (8000 BC); obsidian knives, sickles, arrow ends, cutters and perforators; swords and spear ends (3200 - 3000 AD); human grave (4000 AD); seal prints (3200 - 3000); rythons (1200 - 1700 BC), sculptures and rock inscriptions.

Nestled in the heart of Malatya, the Aslantepe Ruins offer a captivating glimpse into ancient civilizations. This archaeological site is home to remnants of a palace complex that dates back over 6,000 years, showcasing the early foundations of state society. Visitors can explore well-preserved ruins adorned with intricate carvings and learn about significant discoveries like one of the first swords symbolizing power and authority.
Probably the most niche unesco site in Turkey but well worth the visit of you're a neolithic and hittite afficionado like yours truly. It's free btw

Most of the remains are reconstructed but you can learn a lot. The historic value is great! 👍if you want to see the originals of Aslantepe visit the Archeological museum in Ankara as I been informed.

Aralantepe Archeological Site is one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Turkey. This place is an exceptional testimony to the birth of state society. One of the first swords representing power and authority was found in the mound. The first example of public palace was also uncovered here. Its close location to the Malatya city center is another advantage. You can reach Malatya from Istanbul via direct flights everyday. Go and eplore the first emergence of state society here.

Melid ( Arslantepe) located in the Malatya plain, 15 km south-west of the Euphrates River. Archaeological evidence from the site testifies to its occupation from at least the 6th millennium BCE up until the Medieval period. The earliest layers belong to the Late Chalcolithic 1-2 periods, contemporary to Early Uruk in Southern Mesopotamia (4300-3900 BCE) and are characterized by adobe houses. The most prominent and flourishing period of the site was in the Late Chalcolithic 5 period, during which the so-called palace complex was constructed.

Merkez Cami, also known as Malatya Grand Mosque, is a historic place of worship located in the heart of Malatya city, Turkey. The mosque has been described as a beautiful addition to the city, with one of its minarets having been destroyed in an earthquake. Despite this, efforts to strengthen and rebuild it have not been carried out. It is mainly used by industrial tradesmen and is known for its cleanliness and spotless appearance.
(Translated by Google) Malatya central mosque was a very beautiful mosque, adding a different color to Malatya. One of its minaret was destroyed in an earthquake. Despite this, precautions and strengthening works were not carried out and it was most recently destroyed in the February 6 earthquake. God forbid, if the earthquake had occurred at the time of Friday prayer, it would have been a great disaster. Why don't we take precautions quickly in such situations? I don't understand whether we can take precautions only after something collapses. The fee charged is not a problem, but the rudeness shown is too much. Moreover, the gentleman said that this is a picnic area and if you want service, go to a 5-star hotel. Thank God, I go to all the places, but I have never seen such arrogant people in my life. If it is a picnic area, why do you provide service? (Translated by Google) The buildings, which have the characteristics of traditional Malatya houses and consist of five mansions side by side, are two-storey houses facing the street, on Saray District Cinema Street. Of the two three-storey mansions, the Malatya house has four rooms and ethnographic artifacts are exhibited in six rooms. The mansions were built in the early 1900s. It is within easy reach of a sightseeing tour in Malatya city centre. The name of the district is Five Mansions anyway, whoever you ask knows it. Five mansions have been beautifully restored to their original form, one of them has been turned into a museum, the others are also used, just spend half an hour. Tashoron Church, located northwest of the city center, has recently undergone a complete restoration, giving it a brand-new look with an impressive 19-ton iron-cast dome. The church had been abandoned for decades but was revived in 2021. Although the neighborhood may seem rough, the church stands as a testament to the Armenian heritage of the region. Following moderate damage from a 2023 earthquake, it is currently closed to visitors.

Bölgede, açık sahada namaz kılınabilmek için yapılan tek eserdir. İpek Yolu olarak bilinen, surların güneybatısına yakın yol güzergâhında bulunmaktadır. Kesme taş kullanılan eserin üzerinde Selçuklu tarzında bir mihrap ile taş basamaklı minber vardır. Mihrabın üst köşelerine yakın iki tarafında birer mühür görülmektedir. Bu mühürlerde, Memlûklu hükümdarı Sultan Melikul Eşref Ebu’l Nasır Kayıdbay lakaplarını ihtiva etmektedir, Namazgâhın yapılış ve onarım tarihlerini belirten kitabeler vardır. Birinde II. Keyhüsrev zamanında; Saceddin İshak oğlu, Selçuklu komutanı Kemaleddin Kamyar adına h.640 - m. 1242 tarihlerinde yaptırıldığını, diğerinde ise Mısır Memlûklularından Seyfeddin Kayıdbay tarafından h. 878- m.1473 yılında onarım gördüğü yazılıdır. Kıble duvarı ortasında yer alan kitabeli mihrabı Selçuklu motifleriyle bezeli olup renkli taş kullanılmıştır. Mihrabın yanında sekiz basamaklı bir minber yer alır. Namaz alanının üç tarafı taş duvarlarla çevrilidir. Vakıflar Bölge Müdürlüğü tarafından 2008’de restore edilmiştir.

The building located in Battalgazi district has survived to the present day while preserving its originality. According to the inscription on the mihrab, it was built in 1243 by Kemaleddin Kamyar, son of Seceddün İshak, one of the Seljuk commanders. Another inscription states that it was repaired in 1473 during the reign of Seyfeddin Kayitbay, one of the Egyptian Candle Holders. The infrastructure of the prayer room was created by laying a rectangular-planned pedestal and smooth cut stones. In the interior of the building, the mihrab is located in the middle of the qibla wall, and the surface of the mihrab is decorated with Seljuk motifs from outside to inside. There is a seal on both sides of the mihrab, near the upper corner. From these seals; The Mamluk sultan is nicknamed Sultan Melikul Eşref Ebu'l Nasır Kayidbay. On the right side of the mihrab is the pulpit with 8 stone steps. The entrance to the building is from the north. In the region; It is the only work built to allow prayer in the open field. It is located on the road route near the southwest of the city walls, known as the Silk Road. The repair was completed in 2008 by the General Directorate of Foundations. Castle
Roma Surları(Battalgazi Surları) in Malatya, Turkey, were initially built by the Roman Emperor Trajanus around 98-117 AD. Over time, the walls gained significance as the city developed during Diocletian's reign and later during the Sasanian-Byzantine struggles. Emperor Justinianus completed these walls in 532. This historical site offers a glimpse into what these 2300-year-old walls looked like in their prime.

(Translated by Google) The construction of the first walls began during the Titus period. Constans I (363) continued the construction and Justinian (532) completed the construction. The walls, which once protected the city of Melitene against external factors, are now in a rather dilapidated state. The construction of the walls, which began with the construction of the Legion Headquarters (XII. Legion) during the reign of Roman Emperor Titus towards the end of the 1st century AD, was expanded and continued by Trajan. Constans I accelerated the construction of the walls during his reign and it took its final shape during the reign of Justinian. The walls, which were built on a pentagonal plan, are in a rather dilapidated state. The construction technique in the surviving parts; the inner and outer surfaces of the walls were covered with smooth large-sized stones and the spaces between the flat stones were filled with rubble stones and fused with mortar. The damaged parts were reinforced with cut stones in the repairs made later. According to the records, it is understood that the walls had 95 bastions and 11 gates. The moat of the castle was expanded in 1060, and the walls of the city, which was captured by Danishmendli Gümüştekin Ahmet Gazi on September 18, 1102, were repaired. Evliya Çelebi gives information about the castle in his Seyahatname and mentions it. (Original) İlk surların yapımına Titus Dönemi'nde başlanmıştır. Constans I (363) yapıyı sürdürmüş ve Justinianus (532) yapım işini sonuçlandırmıştır. Bir zamanlar Melitene şehrini dış etkenlere karşı koruyan surlar günümüzde oldukça harap vaziyettedir. MS. I. yüzyılın sonlarına doğru Roma İmparatoru Titus zamanında Lejyon Karargâhının (XII.

(Translated by Google) The Roman Emperor Trajanus had the first walls of Malatya built in 98-117 AD. The importance of the walls built by Trajanus increased with the development of the city during the time of Diocletian, 284-305 AD. In parallel with this, the walls built by Costance gained even more importance, especially as Malatya became an important border city during the Sasanian-Byzantine struggles. Emperor Justinianus (527-565) completed these walls in 532. It was subjected to significant destruction in the Roman-Byzantine-Sassanid and Byzantine-Arab struggles, and was repaired in accordance with its original style each time. It continued until the Ottoman period. Evliya Çelebi gives general information about the castle. He mentions the Malatya castle, made of five-cornered smooth stone, as "Rakabe Castle", and continues: He says that Kayser named Rakabe, whom Prophet Yunus Aleyhussalam brought to faith while he was in the city of Mosul, had a castle built here because he liked the water and air of Malatya very much. It is stated in the sources that when the region came under Turkish rule, the walls of Malatya were very weak and the city was almost without walls, and while the Great Seljuk sultan Tuğrul Bey was dispatching the Turkmens to Anatolia, the Turks, who reached Malatya via Kemah and Arapkir in 1057, easily captured the city. However, we examine that later, by Constantine The walls, which maintained their importance until the 17th century, were largely destroyed and became ruins after this century.
