St. Lawrence's Church, located in Appleby, is an active Anglican parish church with a rich history dating back to the 12th century. The church features stunning Norman and English gothic architecture and is home to striking tombs honoring Lady Anne and her mother, Lady Margaret. The building itself is a sight to behold, with notable features such as the 'Frosterley marble' displaying fossils and an old organ worth exploring.
St Lawrence Church is such an amazing place. The welcome you receive is priceless, honest, and warm. You're met as soon as you enter this peaceful place. You are warmly invited to take a seat and enjoy a cuppa with the parishioners and vicar. Pop in the welcome is amazing.

A fine, solid and characterful ancient church. It has kept so much of its original features that get a real sense of place. It poses history. It is also a vibrant community hub by the looks of things. I would certainly worship here. 🙏
Vince — Google review
St. Lawrence's is a wonderful Anglican church with a history dating as far back as the 12th century. While the building itself is worthy of study, there are many other aspects of interest, including the "Frosterley marble" (actually black limestone...) which holds many fossils in its polished surface. The old organ is well worth a closer look too, and the stained glass windows are too good to miss.
Alan M — Google review
Beautiful church. So peaceful
Marion M — Google review
St Lawrence Church is well worth a visit and a walk about. There are interesting memorial plaques and the seating is in family pews rather than open seats. Enjoy the stain glass widows presentations and have a look at some of the well caved tombstones. Also be informed that George Washington the first President of USA’s father and brothers worshiped in the church

Very friendly. Great that they allow dogs to attend too.

A lovely calm and quiet place to get away from the pressures of life. Friendly and helpful staff. Wheelchair access. Toilets, including disabled. Very pleasant to relax and chill down out of the hot summer sun.
Dan P — Google review
St Lawrence's is an amazing place of peace with a warm welcoming feel much has been done to bring the church into the 21 century And it's all credit to the PCC and church wardens who strive hard to keep this beautiful church alive For generations to come to enjoy Please Support your local church Because when there gone ! So is the soul of the place they represent ! Long live St Lawrence's

Popped in for a look around and got some cards and prints. Spotted something I wanted to get for my partners birthday but she was with me at the time. I emailed the gallery and Andrew very kindly helped me identify what I was after and sent it to me first class. Really lovely place, with brilliant staff!
S A — Google review
Great shop and super friendly, helpful owner. We left with some lovely art. Highly recommend you check this gallery out. Great looking cafe, good prices and great service. 10/10.
Dean S — Google review
Gorgeous little gallery and cafe in the heart of Appleby. Lots of affordable, original works by local artists, plus books, cards and more. Definitely worth a visit!
Tim H — Google review
Sadly it’s the worst coffee we have ever had. Could not even drink it all. In hindsight should have complained on the day but the guy serving was very rude regarding our dogs, and just wanted to make a quick exit.
Mariana M — Google review
Make sure to visit the Gallery if you're ever in Appleby! There's a great selection of locally produced art and gifts available, as well as a brilliant spot for tea/coffee and a slice of cake. They stock gluten free cake too so that's always a bonus! Andrew is super helpful and can also do some digging into your family tree if you'd like! Will definitely be returning. Plenty of parking on the road outside, or a good selection of car parks a short walk away. There is a short flight of stairs to get in.
Badger — Google review
The man serving in the shop wasn't very friendly. While we were there, my husband had to take a call from the cancer clinic at our hospital. Whoever was serving wasn't happy about us taking the call on the balcony of the cafe/shop despite the fact that there was nobody else there. He said we would have to move if somebody wanted to sit there for coffee. It just didn't feel nice being there. It's a beautiful little place though, probably delightful for art lovers!
Hazel S — Google review
What an absolute fine, just go through the passage into a small courtyard. Up the outdoor stairs to the small cafe andgallery/shop. Best and cheapest tea we purchased £1.90, presented in beautiful teapots etc. Home baking was spot on. Dog friendly. Please note they do not appear to have toilet facilities.

St Anne’s Hospital, founded in 1653 by Lady Anne Clifford, is a historic building that has provided housing for spinsters and widows for centuries. The stone arch at the entrance and the courtyard transport visitors to a bygone era. The almshouses are reminiscent of those in Bruges and offer a peaceful atmosphere with a quaint chapel and beautiful gardens. Visitors can admire the well-kept cottages, vibrant flowers, and serene surroundings while experiencing the hospitality of the residents.
I live here at St.Anne"s, just love it. So happy x

Beautiful - well kept and flowers in abundance with the chapel open for you to see and take pictures
Carole P — Google review
It was well worth the walk to the top of Appleby's steep main street to see these delightful 17th century almshouses enclosing a cobbled courtyard. The cottages are so neat and beautifully kept by their current residents and there's a profusion of lovely flowers. The quiet little chapel was open, was welcome to go inside and take a look.
Valerie H — Google review
Whenever I go to Appleby I always pop in through the gates to view the almshouses. They are historic and incredibly peaceful and remind me of the almshouses in Bruges. There is a calm quiet peace to be found in the little chapel in the corner which is lovely and often open. Then walk across the courtyard and see the beautiful garden and orchard through the gates.

I love this place. It has a tiny chapel, lovely gardens and borders and we met a very friendly resident. Well worth stopping for.

Just visited H&H this weekend for a couple of nights on our way home from Glasgow. Great, great little pub. Staff and I presume the landlady so friendly, atmosphere was fantastic. As for the locals, like been in my local, funny friendly people that were having a drink and making us laugh. Thank you for having such a great boozer, I’ll be back for more!

We were in Appleby on a coach trip so couldn't spend too long in a pub. I like good cask beers and it didn't look great. The lady behind the bar put a good one on for me specially and made us feel so welcome. Wish all pubs could be so friendly and welcoming. Well done, this pub is the best in Appleby. John and Theresa.

Had the steak pie 🥧 chips & veg. It was delicious, loads of steak in the homemade pie & fresh veg (not frozen). Will definitely be returning on my next visit to Cumbria. The lady on the bar was lovely too. 10 out of 10. Thank-you.

Daughter has swimming lessons here. Staff are attentive, great with the kids. Never had a negative experience always willing to help and answer questions. I will always remember the pool when it was an open air pool when I was my daughter's age! Along time ago. Gym is well equipped for the size of the center and it's rural location. Well done. Keep up the hard work. 👌🏻💪🏻

Nice clean pool with helpful staff. Only negative was trying to book online would not let me . Went to reception and payed and went straight in no problem. Might be different if really busy.
Graeme D — Google review
This is a lovely pool: simple, clean, well thought out facilities run by a thoughtful, lovely team. I visited for the first time and was given a little tour so that I knew where everything was. Thanks!
Julie S — Google review
Great to have in such a small location staff were really friendly and helpful, their lockers don't take the new pounds but they lent me one of those tokens that did the job, there is individual changing blocks rather than male and female, it loses a star as I couldn't have a proper shower as they are pool side, good for a rinse.
Neil N — Google review
Just finished a 2pm swim session. My first since last March 2020 and my first at Appleby. Lovely pool, nice and clean. Very poor welcome. Young msn sitting in office behind counter chatting to young female staff. No one on counter. I walked past and he noticed me. I said I have a 2 pm booking which he confirmed and I booked in. He then went back to the office to continue his chat. It would have been more welcoming had he asked if I'd bern here before, as then perhaps, he may have quickly covered Covid rules in the pool and changing rooms, one way systems, take all belongings to the poolside, location of changing rooms, locker routine etc. Ha.......aybe I'm expecting too much?

Appleby Castle is a charming hotel located within an 11th-century castle, offering complimentary breakfast and guided tours. Guests can also enjoy dining options and afternoon tea on the premises. The castle provides a unique accommodation experience with its historic ambiance and picturesque surroundings in Appleby-in-Westmorland, England. With its rich history and elegant setting, it's an ideal destination for travelers seeking a distinctive stay.
A Magical Night in History My family and I had the incredible opportunity to spend a night in the State Suite at Appleby Castle, and it was truly an unforgettable experience. From the moment we arrived, we were impressed by the warm hospitality - meeting the owner personally made our stay feel even more special and welcoming. The castle itself is absolutely stunning and impeccably maintained. Staying in the State Suite felt like stepping back in time, yet with all the modern comforts needed for a comfortable night’s rest. The historical atmosphere was perfectly preserved, giving our children an amazing chance to experience living history firsthand. What made the experience even more memorable was exploring the castle grounds and wandering through the charming village nearby. The kids were fascinated by every corner, and as parents, we loved watching them discover and engage with the rich history surrounding us. The attention to detail in maintaining both the castle and the rooms is evident throughout. It’s clear that great care is taken to preserve this magnificent piece of history while ensuring guests have a wonderful stay. We’re incredibly grateful to the owner for this unique experience. Thank you ☺️
Hassan A — Google review
We had a magically stay for 2-nights. Lovely team running the castle - friendly, helpful, and caring for the property they run. Breakfast and dinner were very enjoyable - worth a vist for dinner alone, with live music. The history of the castle is clear, great to walk down the corridors and up the stairs. History all around. The keep was great to visit and the view is worth it up top. Good clear history of the castle available to learn about in the keep. The room - the bedroom was lovely and had everything. No tv, but not needed. The bathroom wasn't great. It let down the experience. It felt like it could have some with some maintenance. Shower gels were empty. No housekeeping but we only stayed two-nights so not too bothered. Would stay again but not more than 2-nights. For history loves - just go for it and book!

Rude!!! Walking up to the castle and noticed the price list to go.in the grounds but no one in sight, walked further up into castle grounds to try and find someone, was greated with someone shouting at us asking if we had ticket, iam guessing the man was the owner he was rude and we were made to fell like we shouldn't be there, he then told us to walk into the tower to pay for admission but due to his shouting and rude manner we decided to leve, he escorted us out of the gate. Very odd behaviour and definitely wouldn't recommend keep well away as clearly your not welcome!
Nathan S — Google review
I visited Appleby Castle to see the tower grounds and tearooms. On arrival at the gate there was no one on duty at the cabin to pay. Only a QR code to pay we did this and were charged £10 each. Walking up into the Castle area it was totally devoid of any staff. We went to the tower to gain access everything was locked. We searched around and couldn't see any signage or anyone to ask for help. After 40mins we saw someone who we asked and told him we had paid our £10. He asked for our proof and openness the tower, he just sent us in no real explanation other than be careful the steps are steep. We noticed as we went around the exhibition there were signs for an audio tour something we were not offered. The exhibition was good and the views were great. When we came down we wanted to enjoy the tearoom as advertised when we booked online. However yet again no signage, no staff when we tried the hotel reception to ask the doors were locked. A very very disappointing venue to visit.

We really enjoyed our stay in the Russell room last night. What an amazing place so historic and beautiful. Thank you for making us so welcome even though we are pain in the arse vegans you gave us a lovely evening meal and breakfast. The pianist at dinner was a wonderful experience really special thank uou. I would definitely recommend a visit and we will come again. Best wishes Robert and Jacqueline
Jacqui Q — Google review
Great location and building, but the cottage was very very run down and not very clean. The place was absolutely full of spiders, at least 20 in the front room alone which was terrifying. The sound on the TV didn’t work, no proper pans to cook with and we were kept up all night by the noisy cottage next door. I wouldn’t stay again, shame for such a beautiful building!
B1234 — Google review
We visited today as we love historical sites, the website looked like it was perfect for us to take our little one along for the trip, showed us a lovely play area and walk, we met some friends and prebooked online the night before, my friend however didn't so tried to do it via the qr code, it kept declining. The play area kept the 3 year old busy for 10 mins The website stated parking was £5 for the day but on another section stated it was free. If you enjoy castles it's not bad for an hours wandering, it is either undergoing some changes or had a rough summer as it had some areas that weren't even lit up or were empty Once we exited the Norman castle we thought we would be able to use some facilities in the reception and we were also looking for a spot of lunch somewhere, we were greeted by a lady at the door, who informed us we had to go into the town as they had a shoot on so no toilets were available and proceeded to lock the door. The gentleman that greeted us in his car who I can only assume is the owner?? Was nice and friendly he told us how to enter the castle as there wasn't anyone around otherwise to guide. Looked beautiful on the website, and the views were amazing but not worth the fee really Won't be returning
Natalie C — Google review
Wish I could give a good review. We attempted to visit the castle during the traveller gathering, were denied entry and not treated with hospitality by the caretaker. I hope with the renovations and recent opening that the decorum has changed. We will not be travelling here again on our travels from america.

The little building that houses the TIC, Moot Hall, is also a very ancient building and worth a visit. If you're lucky and the Mayor of Appleby is there, you can sometimes get a guided visit of Moot Hall if your name's Appleby, and you also get to sign the Visitors' Book along with Applebys from all over the world. High Cup Nick is a stunning natural formation located on the border of County Durham and Cumbria. The area features Mickle Fell, the highest point in County Durham at 788 meters. Visitors can enjoy an easy walk from the village car park to reach this breathtaking glacial valley, which offers mesmerizing views of the Lake District, Eden Valley, and North Pennines. The hike is filled with beautiful scenery including small streams, waterfalls, and rocky paths.
Brilliant walk. Long steady climb, then walking along the edge of the valley to the end. Fantastic views.

Been wanting to walk this route for over 2 years with my 3 mates, finally we walked it and boy was it worth the wait I’d highly recommend you do this walk, 9.66miles for the car park 10/10
Paul P — Google review
High cup nick was a super day out for us. We parked in dufton and walked from there. We went through all weathers: sun rain and wind. The climb was quite steep in parts and we had three small breaks on the way up. We didn't quite make it to the end because it seemed a bit too steep and rocky for our mad dog. We still had wonderful views from the top. It took us about 3 hours up and 1,5 back down. (We are not professional hikers and we're getting on a bit). We met a few people on the way but not many so it was a very peaceful walk. I can highly recommend it.
AJ W — Google review
Great easy circular 4 hour hike here from Dufton car park with some amazing views. Few boggy places and temperamental weather but safe paths as long as dont go right to the edge if windy or wet.
Chris G — Google review
Absolutely stunning place to walk. We headed over to High Cup Nick. Headed up the middle, bit of a slog over wet moorland, then a great scramble over boulders to the top. Amazing views from the top. Fantastic scenery all day. We added Murton Pike onto the walk too. Long walk but worth it.
Donna W — Google review
Always a stunner, no matter the time of year. The best view of the Lake District is from the Pennines!
Nicola G — Google review
Absolutely fantastic views. Quite a walk to get there. We parked in Dufton but you can knock a couple of miles off by parking at the end of the lane instead

Had a lovely hike during Easter weekend with a gorgeous weather. Scenery was amazing on the way and mesmerising views in front of you when close to the valley. Lovely small streams and waterfalls along the way with rocky paths, would recommend comfortable footwear and warm cloths as it might get colder closer to the valley. We parked the car at public car park but limited spaces but can park along the road as well. Highly recommended for a great stroll with a lovely views of Yorkshire dales.

An unplanned visit to Mark at The Colour Makers House resulted in us purchasing some of his amazing art work. He is a friendly chap who was easy to talk to about his art and the traditional paint / pigment making he does on the premises. These paint sets would make ideal and unique gifts. Thanks Mark.

Yesterday we visited Mark's art shop and had a truly wonderful couple of hours learning about making pigments, looking at the raw materials needed to make paint and learning about art history. Mark is absolutely wonderful at teaching and sharing his passion. Would highly recommend this to anyone. Feel lucky to have discovered this and inspired to have a go at making our own paints. This would be a special birthday gift to anyone and would inspire interest in art, geology and chemistry. Looking forward to going back again with other family and friends. Thankyou 🙏
