Rampestreken is a popular trail leading to an observation deck perched on a rugged mountainside, offering stunning views of dramatic peaks and fjords. The hike uphill can be challenging but provides ample opportunities to rest and admire the scenery. Visitors are rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of Andalsnes town below and the surrounding mountains. Additionally, there is a restaurant called Eggen where hikers can enjoy coffee and sweets, although prices are on the higher side.
Coming from someone who isn’t as fit, the hike was not easy..but the view was totally worth it! 70% of the hike was nicely shaded so you could pace yourself and take breaks when needed. A lot of climbing, especially as you get closer to the viewpoint. Took us about 45mins going up. Do note that the restaurant and gondola remains closed on Monday (day we were hiking). Highly advisable to go early in the morning to avoid large crowds (they come in at 10am and above).

Took a while to get to the top but goodness me was it worth it! Plenty of opportunities to sit and catch your breath, lots of friendly people to talk to on your way up, and of course the views were absolutely incredible! It might feel a bit exhausting when you’re climbing but you’ll feel so good when you get right to the top! We took the gondola back down though as we were very tired, which itself was lovely and very fast! Highly recommend!

We went up independent after everyone had all ready gone up it cost about £40 pounds return but we'll worth it cafe lovely hot chocolate and toilets. Fantastic views and walk ways. When we was last car down 16.00pm.
Rosemary W — Google review
From the summit to that ramp it takes about 25-30 minutes to walk down, and from the bottom to walk up, I heard people that they did about 1.5 hours on a relaxed hike. Views are great

Cable cabine was very expensive, however you can decide to climb (2km ~600m elevation). We had unstable weather so we decided to take lift, it was good decision and worth it. You can hike higher from cable cabine station, very well marked routes which gives incredible view points all around. Just take wind and watter proof jacket and dress well, in 5min weather can be completely changed.

My wife and I took the gondola up and down. We were limited on time and found the gondola to be worth the price. The views from the upper gondola station are beautiful, and there's a few walking trails you can take. The Rampestreken viewpoint, however, is one of the more iconic options. The gondola station is actually even higher than the Rampestreken viewpoint. You need to descend down and then back up. I read a lot of reviews that scared me, people saying it was very hard to do this. I was also very worried about the trail itself and how safe it would be. To my surprise, getting to/from Rampestreken from the gondola was actually quite simple. Most of the trail is full of stairs, some made of stone, and others of rock. There are some parts of the trail that require a little more mobility, but it was nothing that we couldn't manage. It took us about 30-45 mins at a very slow pace to head down, and the same to come back. I actually found the way back to be much easier, despite it being uphill. Yes, I was out of breath, but going down required some balance, while going up was mostly steps. The trail is most difficult toward the top, and is a bit easier near the viewpoint. The views are well worth it. The entire way is full of spots you can stop and enjoy the scenery. The viewpoint itself is also very iconic and worth going to if you have the time and energy! The only thing I will suggest is avoiding days where it is raining. If everything was wet and muddy, things would have been much more difficult. You can still enjoy the views from the Gondola station and try the other trails.

Hard going for someone who is unfit, but doable if you take your time. I’m 57 and have two bad knees but I made it. It’s very steep over rocks and tree roots, with a lot of big stone stairs. But it’s worth it and the cafe etc at the top is welcome.
Shaun C — Google review
Hike to 540moh is not one of easy...spare time and take gondola to eggen restaurant and hike some 100m down to rampa. For me, that was 3rd hike over 500m in the last 12 hours, and it was difficult. But the trail is awesome. Stairs from massive stones. Stunning view points along the way up.

A pretty cool place to hang out. Beer on tap and a good menu to choose from. Mainly though the outdoor patio and views are the main attraction here. When the sun is shining this is a great spot to visit

Amazing bouldering gym in such an unexpected location! 20+ meters high walls. World class gym but also cozy… will want to come back some day! Also alpinism museums was very charming and informative. Must visit when coming to Åndalsnes!

Staff seems to be bored and unmotivated. We asked for hiking recommendations. What we got was just an brief map, unclear directions and no information on the current conditions of the trails. We ended up cutting our hiking short as the trails were slippery and dangerous.
Fernando A — Google review
We found the museum really insightful. The staff is very friendly and the exhibition has some interacting areas. I found very interesting the explanation on how gear for climbers evolved throughout the years and how it developed. Inside there is also a climbing wall you can use and the price is included in the ticket. We also watched the documentary about trolls and mountains and that was interesting as well. I would definitely recommend this when visiting Andalsnes.
Alessandro B — Google review
We were there in May which is a great time to visit Andalsnes as it's not as touristy. The food at the café was good (be aware that the kitchen is closed on Sunday) and the view was amazing. The Staff were super nice and because it was slow when we were there, they spent some time talking to us which added to the great atmosphere.

Mountain cable car
Romsdalsgondolen is a newly opened cable car in Andalsnes, Norway, offering a quick and breathtaking journey to the mountain peak of Nesaksla. Although it may be considered expensive for some, the panoramic views during the 5-minute ride are truly spectacular. Once at the summit, visitors can enjoy stunning vistas of The River Rauma and Romsdalsfjorden.
Amazing amazing amazing. Well worth going, cars every 30 mins. Wheelchair friendly, toilets available, large coffee/restaurant looking over the town. £65 for two people. Very windy but well worth going. Look at my posting for the town as this will explain more about this

This is where I found my happy place. Expensive but worth every penny/krone. We set off early, only 8 people onboard going up. Incredible views, made me quite emotional. Quiet, clean air, able to roam freely without crowds. Returned to reality, just 4 of us on the gondola, so we had front seats on the way down. Would have liked to have walked down but had a cruise ship trip booked pm and wasn't sure if we could make it down in time. I highly recommend this experience.
Lynne F — Google review
A great way to get to the mountain top above Åndalsnes. Go early to avoid the tour buses, but the cars were pretty frequent. Trip Advisor suggests getting tickets in advance , which we did and never received them! Luckily the attendant at the cable car managed to find them in the system. So, don't bother buying them in advance, just get them there.
Martin R — Google review
A Short walk from cruise ship. Fantastic view's from the top. With a cafe and toilet facilities at the top. Can't comment on the food as cafe was too busy, there was mixed reviews from fellow cruise friend's who ate there....from good to okay...and it is over priced...but is expected in Norway...This was my first stop in Norway
Peter H — Google review
Views are incredible during good weather. You can climb a bit uphill for even better experience. The only downside is that the lift is seriously overpriced. 1500 NOK for a round trip for a family is less than acceptable.
Radek P — Google review
Absolutely stunning views, thanks the cabelcar everyone can see out from the top of the mountain, right now it costs 560 NOK per person, but is worth it
Tomáš H — Google review
Do not be afraid of clouds, makes for great photos. Check the prices for the gondola before going, because it will make the Swiss blush.
Olav M — Google review
We wanted to explore during the day and also booked for dinner in Eggen so needed to head back in the evening. Bought the day tickets so used 4 times in total, not cheap but gives great views and it's less painful than walking to the summit with my old legs. There was only 1 side running for maintenance so there was a queue returning in the afternoon but got straight in t at other times. Plenty of washing to do at the summit, views from each side are completely different and your can easily get away from busier parts

Hiking Trails
Romsdalseggen Ridge is a must-visit for hikers in Andalsnes, Norway. This challenging hike offers breathtaking views and is not for the faint of heart due to its steep and narrow ridge. The trail takes around 4-5 hours to complete, with an option to take a cable car part of the way. Hikers should be prepared for muddy and crowded conditions, but the stunning panoramic views make it all worth it.
Absolutely stunning Norway hike on ridge, not to be missed on a sunny day. The ridge portion is challenging but rest, less so. Completed to the cable car in ~4 hours, but decided to save the $30 and hike the rest of the way (added another hour). In retrospect, would have preferred to take the cable car as it was very muddy, crowded and too many slippery tree roots. I am sure it make take 8 hours if you go slow and stop a lot, but if you have basic fitness, you can do it much shorter time (there was no rush and we stopped for a 20 minute lunch). Just a great day-- go!
Jim S — Google review
Hiking the Romsdalseggen Ridge will always be one of the greatest experiences of our life! Fortunately, we were able to do it on a beautiful day in July where the weather seemed to get better as the day progressed. It was also a huge benefit that the days in Scandinavia are very long in the summer. Thankfully, on this day, it did not start to get dark until around 11PM and we needed just about every minute of that daylight. Thankfully, the Grand Hotel Andalsnes offered a one-way shuttle service from our hotel to the start of our hike. Hiking the Romsdalseggen Ridge is a one-way hike where you’ll hike back to Andalsnes to complete your hike by the end of the day and you’ll want to allow plenty of time for this. On our hike we saw some of the most beautiful views we’ll ever see in our lives. While we’re not professional hikers with spikes, ropes, and cliffs, we’re definitely the type that are used to challenging, long distance, all-day strenuous hikes. However, we have to be honest and state that there are 4 areas along this hike that are extremely treacherous and dangerous to get across. These sections sometimes narrow to no more than about 18 inches in width with a straight, long, massive drop off on both sides. If you fall crossing any of these 4 areas you won’t survive the fall. There were other sections where you have to hold onto a chain to make your way around some cliffs with again very steep drops behind you. These are also areas where there is no way you would survive a fall from there. Finally, we felt that some of the most dangerous sections of the hike were poorly marked with directional arrows or anything else that would help. That might not matter on a day with a lot of hikers that you could follow, but on a day with only a few hikers we had to guess which direction was correct. However, this is not the place where hikers should try guess at the correct hike direction, because if you’re wrong you might end up in a place where there’s a higher risk of falling. We started this hike around 8AM and didn’t finish it until around 11PM. But to be clear, we took our time and stopped many times for photographs and to relax and have some food along the way. And we did a bit of exploring and enjoying the views from the top of the gondola ride overlooking Andalsnes before completing our final decent. We do understand that often times directional arrows and other trail maintenance is sometimes done on a volunteer basis by other hikers and we sincerely appreciate that. However, even if you’re experienced, this will be one of the greatest hikes you’ll ever do but you’ll need to proceed with extreme caution!
Michael L — Google review
May be one of the best hikes we have done. Highly recommend taking the bus to the trail head and hiking back to the car in Andalsnes. The bus was labeled Romsdalseggen at the station and was an easy 20 minute ride. Also took the lift down for the last segment to save the knees. Too early in the vacation to be suffering!
Emily — Google review
Did the hike last week of September 2025. There was only 1 bus (9am) that run (almost end of the season). I was very glad to see many people taking the bus as i was worried abt snow and unsure if the hike can be done. After walking ~2.5km of gradual ascent, abt 1.5hr into the hike, there was snow as I climb up the first steep wall of rocks)… on all fours. It’s a bit scary with all the snow and some ice. I am glad for all the hikers that went ahead and led the way! I followed their footsteps. I had clear sky and nice sunny weather! After the restaurant, it was a steep descent. About 3/4 of the descent had “steps”, and that was very helpful, though still intense in th knees. (Turns out, quite a people did the hike from Åndalsnes town centre, past the restaurant and kept going to the top and returned the way same. This had much lesser snow. Though I read that during busy time, the hike is done one way, from the bus drop off and back to Åndalsnes as some parts on the ridge are narrow)

Hiked Romsdaleseggen from Venjedalen to Romsdalsgondolen via Mjolvafjellet and Hogaksla (5.3 miles, 2747 ft gain). One of the most scenic routes I've hiked; sweeping landscape views nearly everywhere. Started at 0945 and arrived at upper gondola at 1700; though I consistently stopped to take pictures, there's always something to view. I hiked at start of the Andalsnes off-season, where there is snow on the higher parts of the ridge. The bus that usually runs from the Andalsnes visitor center to Venjedalen (at 0830 or 0930) was not operating, so I called a private taxi. I completed the hike with no technical gear; only hiking boots, gloves, and multiple clothing layers. You will have to rock scramble (use hands and feet to climb), use chains anchored to the route, and follow the red trail spray paint to complete. Hiking poles would have been nice to test the snow; with the blanket snow coverage, it's hard to tell where flat surfaces are beneath the snow, I stepped in many holes and on precarious rocks. This route was amazing; no boring areas, rocks scrambles were fun, views were spectacular, and a large section follows the ridgeline cliff edge (so you're constantly seeing the dramatic landscape). One of my favorite hikes. I think the views right as you summit Romsdaleseggen Ridge and until Mjolvafjellet are the best.

The Rauma Railway offers an unforgettable journey through the stunning landscapes of central Norway, stretching 114 kilometers from Andalsnes to Dombas. This scenic train ride is a must for railway enthusiasts, as it weaves through majestic fjords, lush forests, and picturesque valleys while crossing 32 bridges and six tunnels. For those looking for a shorter experience during the summer months, there’s a special tourist train that operates twice daily from June to August, providing insightful commentary along the way.
Its a one full day train journey from Oslo Central Station to Andalsnes. You can book ticket online or from the NSB counter in OSLO central station OSLO S. They staff at the NSB explains you very well about the travel. From OSLO S you should take train to Dombas and from Dombas to Andalsnes. The route from Dombas to Andalsnes is known as the wildest and most beautiful train journey in Norway. The best time to visit is in Aug. I got to know when i spoke to the local people in Dombas. The train is very comfortable and they have restaurant in trains. You can buy coffee and food from the restaurant in the train which is very comfortable and convenient. The seats can be adjusted and spacious enough. The train staffs are very friendly and they will answer all your concerns about travel in the best and polite way. Very friendly staffs. I really enjoyed this journey. Looking forward to visit during Aug to enjoy the real beauty of Norway.

Troll Wall, known as Europe's tallest rock face, is a breathtaking natural wonder surrounded by rugged peaks. A visit here is enhanced by the scenic Rauma Railway ride, which offers stunning views of the Trollveggen cliff and Kylling bridge while providing informative commentary in multiple languages. The area boasts a visitor center and café for refreshments after exploring nearby trails. Whether shrouded in mist or basking in sunlight, the wall's imposing presence captivates all who see it.

Amazing attraction. Don't rush while driving up and down the road, just enjoy the scenery. If you visit early in the day and it is foggy, take a trip through Romsdalen, Øverdalen or Eiksdalen and return to Trollveggen in the afternoon, because it will most likely have cleared up and the view will be astonishing. In the middle of Trollveggen there is a large waterfall running through, this ends up in a river going through the forrest which runs along the road that leads to all the winding roads and hairpins. The forrest has different hiking paths that takes you all the way up to the top of Trollveggen.

Definitely worth a stop if you’re traveling by. Nice little visitor center at the bottom, most of the stuff sold there is the usual tourist junk. But the wall itself is just amazing. We were unlucky this time, but even with clouds it looks massive. Quite some people died there climbing or basejumping over the years, so it’s not an easy mountain.

(Translated by Google) I visited the shop on a Sunday in July to ask for some information, and Giorgio was incredibly kind and went out of his way to resolve a problem for me with a cancelled train. There aren't 6 stars, but they deserve all of them. Thank you. Waterfall
Nature & Parks
Stigfossen Waterfall is a magnificent natural wonder located in the iconic Trollstigen pass. The waterfall cascades down sheer rocks, creating a stunning sight that offers great photo opportunities. Visitors can enjoy two different viewpoints of the waterfall, one from the top and another high above the roadway, accessible via a 15-minute walk. It is highly recommended to dedicate about 40 minutes to fully appreciate and explore this breathtaking attraction.
Home » Waterfalls » Norway » Stigfossen (Trollstigen) Stigfossen (Trollstigen) Stigfossen is a huge waterfall near Åndalsnes, located at Trollstigen, in the region More og Romsdal, Norway. Stigfossen is in my opinion one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Norway and is certainly in my top 10 best waterfalls in Norway. Trollstigen is the most famous road in Norway and is one of the touristic highlights of Norway. Trollstigen means Troll’s ladder and is also called the troll route. The road has 11 hairpin curves and an elevation of approximately 850 meter. The road is only open in summertime!Information about the opening and closing dates can be found on the website of nasjonaleturistveger. Driving down the road (or up) leads you along two waterfalls. Stigfossen is the biggest waterfall and is the one seeing first.

Everyone needs to make this trip a bucket list item! The drive alone from Alesund to get to Trollstigen is eye dropping in itself. It’s utterly gorgeous. Then once you get near you will drive up the hairy, scary but the most beautiful switchback road you’ll ever see. Then, once you get to the top, word can’t describe what you will see.

(Translated by Google) The waterfall is worth seeing, no question. And a trip there can be easily combined with other great destinations. But it is also dangerous, because tourists stop in the middle of the narrow streets to take photos - mostly without their heads. Be careful if you want to take a photo stop here!

Lovely little haven for prayer, contemplation or just shelter from the rain while in Åndalsnes and waiting for a train. Thank you to those who maintain it for the public to enjoy. I had some lovely time practising my reading Norwegian from the Bible while sitting out a very rainy afternoon.

Intriguing concept for a chapel built out of an old train car.
