Restaurant
Salsa Brava Restaurante Caribeño is a vibrant spot that has risen from the ashes of Bamboo, a beloved dance club that was once located by the water. The Tex Mex bar offers enticing drink specials and an open-air setting with scenic views. For sports enthusiasts, The Point in Playa Negra features multiple flat-screen TVs and serves up satisfying bar food.
We sat right by the water with an amazing view. Drinks and food were good. We even saw a sloth family in a tree right by our table. Overall great spot right on the water and in town!

I was there visiting the town and found Salsa Brava and stayed. The drinks all the stuff and the management are amazing. Beautiful food full of flavours. Absolute amazing dining room set on the beach looking out to sea. All the cocktails 🍹 you want and more. Awesome range of beers and drinks. And amazing cocktails 🍹. All the stuff are so beautiful and happy to help with anything. Cheers to all you mob for making a funny holiday. 🍻🍻🍻

Best place at the beach in Puerto Vijejo. I was looking for a place at the beach. Nice atmosphere and good music (not loud and annoying). I had awesome sundowner, a very good Aperol Spritz (given it’s not EU) and DIEGO made me feel very welcome. Highly recommend this place!
Steven D — Google review
The staff here are awesome! We came by for breakfast and coffee one day and Ardie was our waiter. He was fabulous! He made my special request coffee and was happy to talk to us about the local wildlife and culture. We came back our last morning while in the area before they even opened and he recognized us as we walked by. He once again took my special request coffee order. Ardie was happy to give us a few suggestions of local things to do our last day and once again spoke to us about other local wildlife we were interested in. He was very attentive even though I only ordered coffee. We’d ordered eggs our first day here. One of us added avocado and we highly recommend doing so as the order with avocado was excellent. The bread was also very good. Last night, we wanted to walk the beach and the staff invited us right in and said we could take a seat even if we didn’t order anything. We of course ordered dinner on our way back through after a night stroll on the beach. The nachos were excellent. Very different, but so good!

My friend and I have been staying in puerto viejo and this has been our favorite place to be! The vibes are awesome and they play the best music. They have outdoor and indoor seating and with the view of the ocean. We also saw a sloth on one of their trees just a few feet away.

Calamari was perfect. Tacos were tiny. Drinks were delicous. Service was wonderful. The pollo caribeña was sooo goood. Highly recommended 👌

Place to be in Puerto Viejo! Right in the center, Caribbean Vibes, good food, music and drinks. Since 3 years one of my fav. place to enjoy while day/night. There are pleanty of good events to shake your hips in the nights. Pura vida ;)
Tenzing K — Google review
The food here is solidly good, and the service is even better, especially Kerlin. He was very attentive to our party's needs, even bringing over an extra chair before I needed to ask for one. Atmosphere is also very tranquil, as the outdoor seating is right by the beach, and they have live music Sunday evenings 16:00-18:00.

We had a fantastic dinner here! I ordered the Peruvian chaufa with steak and seafood—it was delicious and a generous portion, so come hungry. I highly recommend it! The staff was also incredibly accommodating; when we mentioned my friend is vegan, the chef prepared a special meal just for him, and he loved it. The glowing lights around the restaurant create a wonderful atmosphere, making it the perfect spot for a memorable night!

I highly recommend this restaurant! Staff: Incredible! Anything we needed or requested was provided immediately with sincerity and a huge smile. Atmosphere: Beautiful! We sat in the front of the restaurant and over looked the beach. If you’re lucky you may see the local resident sloth walk by. Food: Great! I had the Snapper, fresh and grilled. It was delicious. Dessert was the banana in a box- so good and perfect for a finishing touch Beverage: Happy Hour! Till 6pm and the drinks were tasty and beautifully decorated. Thank you to Chris and all the staff you made our Tuesday night amazing! See you next time. 🤗

Definitely dress to impress for KOKi this restaurant was definitely on my list for a fancy dinner. Great for date night or for family dinner celebrations. Reservations are recommended it does get busier past 7:30pm you may be able to get a spot if it is not busy but every time we drove past it was the restaurant to go to. Food was amazing and tropical drinks were 10/10. Location was in a busy intersection trying to get to the next beach but you get the view of the beach and vendors across.

Loved our anniversary dinner here! It felt so special- our server Andres was a huge part of that! Beautiful setting and delicious food with an excellent presentation. Ambiance is great. Next time I wouldn’t sit as close to the road (it’s noisy) but great sunset view! We had a shrimp dish and a steak dish that were both packed with flavor! Would love to come again!
Jen H — Google review
Food was excellent, my friend and I got the garlic lobster and the grilled octopus and the spring rolls as well as the passion fruit crème brûlée. All were great but the octopus in particular was grilled to perfection, crispy skin and tender meat 🤤. Our server andres was incredible and super friendly
Kienan M — Google review
The food was delicious, especially the meat which was perfectly cooked and beautifully presented. The restaurant itself has a great atmosphere and stylish decor. Special thanks to our waiter Andrés, he was very friendly and provided excellent service. Highly recommended!

We had a wonderful dinner and service. I can’t say enough nice things about this restaurant. The food was incredible and the restaurant was beautiful providing a relaxing and comfortable environment. We appreciated how friendly and accommodating the staff was. Andres in particular was pleasant, kind and made us feel like his only customer. For my birthday, the servers sang happy birthday and just made our experience rememberable. i would recommend this restaurant to anyone who is looking for exceptional food, drinks, and service at a good price.
Britney D — Google review
Excellent restaurant with good quality food and wonderfully atmospheric in the evening. The table service was great, food quality great (We had Ribs with Caribbean sauce and Beef Stir Fry and a passion fruit creme brûlée dessert) remember you're in Puerto Viejo, not some city eatery so this is defo fine dinning for the location and a bit more expensive than some other places 🙌 totally worth it.

Beaches
Playa Puerto Viejo, also known as Chino Beach, is a small yet charming soft sand beach located in Puerto Viejo de Talamanca on the Caribbean side of Costa Rica. The beach is lined with palm trees and features natural rock pools that break the waves, making it an ideal spot for relaxation and safe for kids to play. While not suitable for swimming due to shallow waters, the beach offers picturesque views and opportunities for exploration.
Go for the black sand beach if for no other reason. It is absolutely incredible. It glistens as if there are micro diamonds and minerals in it. I swear you can feel the energy enter your body from the sand through your feet. I loved fresh fruit, the healthy green drinks and walking the center of town on a random night during New Year’s Eve.
Sophia P — Google review
It was really nice. The beach was clean, and the waves were large. Very blue water. The little town had all sorts of cute shops and funky stalls with artists, jewelry makers and restaurants. Love Puerto Viejo!
Michelle J — Google review
Maybe on weekdays it's nice if there's no people. On weekends it's crowded and there's not much space, the beach itself is super small and narrow. Only if you go to the woods there will be less people. Also waves don't allow to swim much. I probably won't return here.
A A — Google review
The vibe in Puerto Viejo is so chill anf the black sand beach runs for miles. Puerto Viejo is for the lazy-day adventurer and for those that want to spend the whole day at th beach doing nothing. Calmer water, shallow beaches (in spots) for the little ones. You might come across the occasional coconut salesperson wondering by too. I loved it here so much that I came back after a visit to Limon in between. Rented a bike for the week (18,000 colones / $35.57) and rode down to Cocles, did my store shopping, or just moseyed along. See my other reviews on local spots to frequent.

Puerto Viejo de Talamanca is a small town on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. It's very popular with tourists. There are more beautiful places close to this town such as Punta Uva, Gandoca Manzanillo Refuge and National Park Cahuita. I think this is a party town just like Jaco Beach on the Pacific coast of the country. This is nice as well.
Lejla V — Google review
Nice beach for snorkeling around the coral reef. More of a place to bathe rather than swim because of the reef.
Mr. H — Google review
Water was lovely and warm. Options to hire Mopeds, bikes , quad bikes. Ideal end of a tour

Serene and beautiful, if you walk a bit futher into the woods you'll discover less attended places with practically no people around.

Restaurant
Bread & Chocolate, located in Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica, has gained popularity as a must-visit cafe. It is known for serving wholesome breakfasts, lunches, and delightful baked goods such as handmade truffles, brownies, and muffins. Despite its limited seating on a raised deck off the main road, the cozy ambiance makes it a favorite spot for both locals and tourists. As the name implies, visitors are encouraged to indulge in some chocolate treats to take home with them.
We got Iced mocha lattes, and traditional breakfast, and a avocado on plantain toast. The food was delicious! And the coffee was also very good. The highlight for me was the eggs, they were cooked perfectly. Highly recommend as it was a great way to start the day!
Max F — Google review
We loved the place and would come back several times if we had more time in Puerto Viejo. It's a great spot for either breakfast, lunch or cake/ coffee. We had the potatoes with bbq sauce and the sauce was so great - it had small pieces of vegetables in it and was the best bbq sauce we had eaten so far. We also got the gluten free chocolate cake (queen of Sheba) which was incredible! The iced cappuccino tasted great too eben though it was different than expected (they put the milk, ice and coffee in a blender so that it looks like a smoothie). It comes with cinnamon which was great for us since we like that. The card indicates what is gluten free and what is not. They have two different chocolate cakes that are gluten free and also a cookie for take away. Big recommendation!
Sophia K — Google review
We heard about this place before we came to CR. It did not disappoint. We had breakfast, some tasty coffee, ice coffee and an excellent banana smoothie. Quick and friendly service. Food was fresh and delicious. Don’t leave without trying some dessert! The homemade peanut butter cups were fantastic!
Bryan B — Google review
My husband and I came here and we loved it. We got the scrambled egg plate with potatoes and got a bagel with Chipotle cream cheese and was amazing but forgot a picture. Highly recommend and very nice and friendly. Iced cappuccino was just ok but I like super strong coffee. French toast was great also and very fresh.
Megan L — Google review
We stumbled across this restaurant while looking for breakfast near puerto viejo. What a great place to eat! Kids all tried smoothies, pancakes and French toast, while adults had a breakfast sandwich and some eggs, potatoes and fruit. Enjoyed everything and grabbed some chocolate and treats to go after.
Jason S — Google review
Wow - delicious! I had a coffee, ice cream float. The locally-made vanilla ice cream would have been wonderful just by itself, but with the coffee and caramel drizzle it was super-wonderful 🤩 And my mocha cheesecake was equally delish 😋 The service was great and the staff super friendly.
Andrew M — Google review
Lovely, super calm. The food is actually so good I got the everything mixed bagel and I’ve never had a bagel so good. The coconut pie was actually so good I could cry. Go eat there

High ratings for good reason - a lovely little cafe with lots of brunch/lunch options, from standard fare to more interesting options. The avocado on plantain was incredible, and lots of avocado too. Cold brew was strong and a good size.

Cafe
Cafe Rico is a hidden gem in Puerto Viejo, offering not only excellent coffee but also some of the best breakfast and lunch options in town. The open-air space is surrounded by lush vegetation, providing a shady and relaxing atmosphere where you can spot sloths and exotic birds while enjoying your meal. Additionally, the cafe boasts the town's best selection of used books.
Very laid back, hidden gem in Puerto Viejo. This outdoor cafe was charming with delicious food options. Had come here a decade ago and had banana bread French Toast, was extremely pleased to try this again a decade later and have a delicious meal.
Andrea W — Google review
Would definitely recommend this place. Got the chilaquiles and they did not disappoint. Definitely had a Mexican flare that is hard to find in Puerto Viejo. My wife got the special: Elvis Breakfast Sandwich - banana pb bacon French toast sandwich. She loved it. We also really enjoyed the smoothie and cappuccino. Overall, very good price for what you get and it felt very homey! Would highly recommend. We would go again but they are closed the next two days.
Giovani B — Google review
Beautiful concept with book trading shelves that make the place unique. Highly recommend the mocha latte and the toast chicken sandwich, both are delicious! The staff is very friendly as well
Susan G — Google review
Absolutely loved it here!!!! I got the cinnamon french toast. It had a crunchy outside but such a chewy inside, so good! My husband got the enchiladas, it was the special of the day. Also so very good. Flavor was there and good portion. Our waiter was beyond friendly. And the place itself is SO cute. Lots of books and plants and you’re under a canopy of trees. You should definitely go!

Great breakfast!! The banana pancakes were delicious! Very kind staff. We really recommend this place
Klaudia K — Google review
This is a great place to start your day! The kitchen uses fresh ingredients. I had the Avocado Toast, plantains, along with a fresh papaya juice. My wife enjoyed the everything bagel. We wrapped up with a delightful Cafe Mocha coffee.
Anthony H — Google review
They really do have the BEST espresso in PV. I've tried several other local shops and nothing compares to this spot. Owner Lena is super friendly, along with staff. Their iced espresso lattes even have espresso ice cubes in them. So yummy with de Leche coco. Breakfast is fresh & delicious, I got the huevos ranchero. The vibe is casual & peaceful and you may get to see some local wildlife even!
Queen J — Google review
Delicious food, coffee, and great staff. Enjoy the peaceful garden setting in the middle of Puerto Viejo. Food made with lots of love. Also, a great place to get a used book. My favorite menu items are the omelette, Ana Rosa, and the French toast. Ask about their weekly special. They now have some fabulous sandwiches to offer for lunch!

Bar
Johnny's Place is a well-established beachfront bar and dance club in Puerto Viejo, known for its lively nightlife scene. During the day, it may seem unassuming, but after dark, it transforms into a hot spot for dancing and partying. Located near the town's police station, it offers cheap drinks, DJs, and a vibrant atmosphere perfect for beach parties on weekends. In addition to its nightlife, Johnny's Place also serves food with great views of the bay.
We were in town for my Friends birthday back in July. We were stopping at a few places to check out the night life. Johnnys has a great bar, music and vibes. Nice ocean front spot that I’ll definitely go back to whenever I go back. Shout out to the owner Johnny! Big up yaself!!
SHAMIA T — Google review
A great place to relax beach side with great views of the bay here. The Girl / waitress was lovely and really helpful and attentive. There are TV's on the wall if sport is your thing but this place is really quite peaceful. You can eat inside or out virtually on the beach under cover. The catch of the day fresh caught fish is amazing and priced by weight. Reasonably priced with a good menu. Nice place

Poor exchange us$ to local currency price. Helpful floor manager. Empty aside from our group at happy hour. Great location with potential, but it seems something isn't working well.
Pierre D — Google review
This was recommended by many as a hotspot at night but everytime we went to check it out they were either closed or closing which didn’t align with their listed hours. When we finally did go for karaoke night it was a nice spot on the beach but the crowd lacked. This place had lots of potential. Not sure if this a better daytime spot but when we passed by during the day they weee also closed.
Andrea W — Google review
Johnny's Place is my favourite spot to hang out when I was solo traveling in Puerto Viejo in Costa Rica. It's a good place to chillax during happy hour while people watching and taking a dip in the ocean. They've got great cocktails and their seafood ceviche was soooo yummy and fresh. The beachfront view is also soooo gorgeous. They even have beach chairs where you can lounge while having a drink. Definitely a great place to check out when you're in Puerto Viejo.

Hot Rocks is a popular nightlife spot in Puerto Viejo, known for its lively atmosphere and entertainment options. Located at the center of town where the main road meets the harbor, it features a big stage for live music and karaoke, a packed bar, as well as pool and foosball tables. The venue also offers an open restaurant setting with swinging chairs and hosts various themed nights including karaoke, salsa, and Ladies Night.
Whats not to like about hot rocks? Happy hour, good bar food, live music, open mic nights, salsa dancing, good people, great bartenders, and its pretty much hoping on the weekends with a mix of locals, tourists, and expats. It's in the center of Puerto Viejo and a well known hot spot. They have cheap drinks as well. I'm personally obsessed with the chicken fingers and fried plantains or french fries with some ranch.
Queen J — Google review
Cool Caribbean style place, easy food for kids. Local Costa Rica food available, spanish finger food too. The fajitas were delicious
Adam E — Google review
Hot Rocks was a cool stop on our trip through Puerto Viejo. They usually have live music or karaoke and they welcome people on stage to dance. The setup inside is difficult to navigate though- the long tables make it difficult to walk through and it can get super packed on event nights. I recommend ordering at the bar if you can- unfortunately they were pretty short staffed when we visited and it took about a half hour for us to get our drinks. When all is said and done though we still had a great time and I loved the atmosphere.
Marissa L — Google review

Went on a Saturday with my cousins. Got a table near the pool tables. Service was random and kind of slow. Food was fine, the menu is pretty extensive. My cousin LOVED the chicken fajitas, and couldn't stop raving about them. The atmosphere is the real draw. The entertainment was amazing! Super fun place, very local, highly recommended.

Best place in Puerto Viejo for live music. They get great bands
Matz S — Google review
This was a great place to stop for live music I liked the band, but the service absolutely ruined our experience. I took two sips of my drink and wanted to spit it out. I asked my waiter if we could exchange it but the waiter never brought the new drink. When he finally came back with the bill he double charged our drinks. When we brought it up, he said he drank the drinks and didn’t see a problem with it. I was stunned by the comment and lack of service
Threy S — Google review
Terrible food and service. We had the worst drinks I’ve ever tasted. Tasted like sour, cheap trash in your mouth. The live music is nice but please don’t eat or drink here. Spent $56 for 3 drinks.

Soulsurfer is a hidden gem that offers delicious gourmet burgers, chicken sandwiches, and breakfast options. The menu features a variety of mouthwatering choices, including bagels and refreshing beverages like latte macchiatos and pineapple juice. The friendly staff and fair prices add to the overall positive experience. The restaurant's unique proposals, such as the "backlash" burger with blue cheese, stand out among its offerings.
What should I say this time ?! I am writing this review just because I know how important it is these days. The people in CostaRica relay on it then the business is hard. For some of them it is just a “hobby” then they have just to much and don”t really care. For others it is a different between keep going or leave it. So, I am writing every time I was in Martina’s SoulSurfer. At first let’s have a look on the place… There is always pro and cons If you prefer to have a delicious dinner in a lovely and almost quite setting, then you are on the right place. In minutes walking distance to Puerto Viejo’s main square.Don’t get me wrong, it is just my preference. I can”t enjoy this kind of food next to a loud and crowdy place. About the food… I am visiting every time Martina’s place and have never been disappointed. It starts with something for eyes… did you ever asked yourself why the burgers in a fast food restaurants looks quite different to those pictures on the walls? In Soul Surfer you don’t need as the burgers are better than the pictures. There is always room for improvement as we all are individuals. Some are preferring to get the fries separately in a busker or so. Other like blue plates … for my eyes it was very very good. The burger was medium, juicy and with flavor of blue cheese as ordered. Fries with the magic spice sauce ( shame Martina doesn’t want to share the receipe ). Service… All of the team are very nice. I was too busy with the food to keep eye in so excuse me but I can’t really review this time. Based on previous visits there were always mega good.

This place really serves huge burgers and I love that they have plenty of vegetarian and vegan options. I ordered the senia burger and almost couldn’t finish. The fries we shared and those were also super delish. Burger itself really tasted homemade and fresh. Recommended! Just don’t order the pineapple burger cause from what I’ve read here that’s apparently not really a burger.
許櫻花Sakura — Google review
Food was delicious. I had the fajita chicken burger which was amazing, friends had veggie options that they enjoyed equally as much. Low season so not many customers/activity to score higher on the atmosphere front, but worth a visit to any time of year. Could pay cash or card and they had wifi.
Amanda G — Google review
All around amazing experience. The owner is so nice and attentive. The drinks were refreshing, and the burgers were amazing. We had the dude beef burger and the beach break tuna burger; plus a marg, caipirinha, and mojito. The burgers were delicious, cooked perfect to order, and the ingredients complemented each other so well. The drinks were super refreshing. We were even talking about coming the next night to try different burgers. Thank you soulsurfer! Great experience

Stopped in based on reviews. We were not disappointed. Prices are higher than what we topically pay but the food was well worth it. The service is exceptional. The only things is that it was raining cats and dogs and the whole restaurant got wet. There was a very limited "indoor" that provided some shelter but not completely.

Food was amazing! I'm a vegetarian so I was skeptical when my wife told me this place was a must see. They have an entire vegetarian section for burgers that are just as good, if not better, than the real thing. If you're in town, be sure to stop by! This place is worth all of it's 5 stars.

Withouth a doubt one of the best hamburgers I had, And yes I am constantly looking for new hamburgers place everywhere I go in Costa Rica... There's a lot of proposals that are for good, out of the usual within their menu, if you like blue cheese (not everyone does) order the backlash and you won't regret it. I had such a happy meal at their place I want to go back whenever I go to Perto Viejo again.

Nestled just before Cocles beach, Caribeans Chocolate and Coffee offers a laid-back atmosphere with its rustic decor and a wide array of delectable coffee and chocolate. Visitors can also partake in guided tours that delve into the global spiritual living ethos. The highly recommended Chocolate Tour provides an insightful look into the production of chocolate. Additionally, the establishment's unique experience allows guests to learn about the ancient Mayan culture of cacao and its modern production methods.
FYI: we didn’t eat at the cafe, only tasted the chocolates. This place is great and all except two flavours are vegan. The tour is around 40 USD per person and will take around 2-2.5 hours. Highly recommended to learn more about chocolate making. Also a good activity when it’s raining a bit.

Everything about this place and everyone you encounter working here are amazing! The food, drinks, and chocolates are so flavorful. The tour was informative, delicious, and fun. The land you get to be on during the tour is so beautiful and full of wildlife. We felt very welcomed and definitely recommend the full experience to others!

I stopped in for a mochaccino and a fresh fruit bowl, and everything was absolutely perfect. The quality of both was outstanding, with rich, smooth coffee and fresh, flavorful fruit. The atmosphere had a calm, relaxed vibe that made it an ideal place to start the morning. Customer service was phenomenal, friendly, and attentive. The location is great, right across the street from Playa Cocles. This spot quickly became one of my favorite places in Puerto Viejo.
Jake B — Google review
We went on a chocolate tour that was both educational and enjoyable. We learned about the process of growing cacao and roasting it to turn it into chocolate. During the walk, we also got to see some wildlife, including sloths, frogs, and birds, including my favorite tucán. We also had a wonderful sandwich while waiting for our tour to begin.
Alan P — Google review
We did the Cacao beans tour (in French) and had lunch there. Absolutely to be recommended, one of the highlights in the area! We learned a lot about cacao, about the jungle, we saw sloth, tucans and had a lot of fun.

In the begining we ate a tasty lunch. Then we had a wonderfull two hours chocolate tour with amazing guide Oscar. During the tour we saw three sloths and troop of howler monkeys. What an experience!

We were so happy we stopped here on our trip to Puerto Viejo. We had a fantastic time at the chocolate tour. Iced mocha was the best we've ever had!

We had such a great experience on the Caribeans chocolate tour! Our guide, Dan, was wonderful and incredibly knowledgeable about the entire chocolate-making process. On the walk up to the factory, he pointed out lots of animals including frogs, spiders, and even sloths, which made it extra special. The chocolate itself was amazing, and my favorite was the espresso one. The tour lasted about two hours, which was exactly what I wanted in a chocolate tour, long enough to be informative and hands-on without dragging on. We got to try plenty of different chocolates throughout the tour and received a discount for the store and café afterward. With only four people in our group, it felt very personal and relaxed. Highly recommend this tour for anyone visiting the area!

Located in the heart of Puerto Viejo, Choco offers a unique experience of pairing wine, beer, or rum with chocolates sourced from the best cacao farms in the area. The region is renowned for its cacao production, and visitors can join tours to learn about the process of growing cacao, drying the beans, and making chocolate. The interior is small but charmingly decorated and always bustling with people enjoying drinks and tastings. The staff is friendly and everything offered is locally sourced.
This was such a fun, educational and tasty experience! We did the rum and chocolate experience and we would highly Recommend this. The only souvenirs we took from this trip were chocolate bars from this place. Highly Recommend!

We did a wine pairing as well as a rum pairing and both were deliciously paired with local chocolates. Fun date night idea.

Amazing cozy store and cafe to have an awesome tasting opportunity of local chocolates. They offer a few different pairing options, a selection of different chocolates that can be paired with the option of coffee, beer, rum, or just a degustation platter. The people working there are awesome and will explain each product and what to expect from it, as well as tips on how to make it pair even better. Definitely recommend this place to have some local chocolate tasting from the whole region. Also you will have a chance to buy any of your favorite chocolates and also book a tour to some of the plantations which offer this service.

Who would ever think to pair Rum & Chocolate ? When In Costa Rica and you’re looking for something different to do this experience is the one ! You can choose the rum & chocolate tasting or the rum & wine . We chose rum & chocolate . This experience is super affordable you’re looking at $30 per person for the rum & chocolate and the price is slightly cheaper for the wine & rum pairing tasting . They start off by explaining the process presented to you is 3 different aged rums but the same brand , & they pair each one with a chocolate . This chocolate literally melted in your mouth and I definitely had a favorite. When over you have the option to purchase any thing you tried along with others inside the store . Do your self a favor and add this experience if you’re a local in Costa Rica or just visiting .

Amazing place right in the middle of Puerto Viejo! The place is a local chocolate store that sells in a fare trade way amazing cacao productos from the Talamanca region. They have so many options with so many flavors that it’s difficult to decide what to get. The place is beautiful, designed by one of the owners that happens to be a graphic designer! They also sell coffee, local beers and rums, and they match this drinks with the perfect chocolate. Be sure to get the tasting chocolate and coffee! Superb options. The service is incredible and the atmosphere is delicious. Thanks you!

Wonderful experience of chocolate tasting. But wait, there’s more! You can also pair it with wine, craft beer and amazingly good rum, made in CR. Highly recommend for a chill one hour to hang while the sun is up🌞

Excellent and fun experience!! We booked our beer tasting with airbnb and they welcomed us very friendly. They even gave us a costa rican wine tasting and halved a cacao fruit for us to try fresh and raw. Really amazing experience to do in Puerto Viejo, whether it’s raining or not. All chocolate is also vegan and local from the farms nearby!

Chino Beach, located in Puerto Viejo, is a popular spot surrounded by bars, restaurants, and shops. It's a small beach with calm waters and a shallow shore that makes it ideal for families with young children. The reef provides protection from large waves, creating a waveless area between two small boats where visitors can enjoy swimming safely. Additionally, the nearby bars offer convenience for grabbing drinks and snacks before taking a dip in the ocean.
Fun side of town. Safe for kids to swim, light are kept on till late, so we swam till 10:30pm. The whole place is such a vibe, they have public fire show in the evening and some local artists come and person some times. The best part is the safe swimming areas midst of corals.
Pradeep A — Google review
Place is ok. Water looks clear and beautiful, many corals, but nice pool sized chrystal clear water areas. Sadly the beach smells bad and fishy.
Maria E — Google review
Great spot to chill yet plenty of action. There is a children’s playground, a basketball court and the MEPA bus station.
Christina # — Google review
Nice and beautiful beach with waveless place between two small boats. Also there are few bars facing this beach which is very convenient, we took some cocktails and smoothies for baby while enjoying the see breeze, than can leave your drink and go swimming and come back. Would definitely come back again to this place!
I D — Google review
A not-so hidden gem right in the middle of Puerto Viejo. This is a great little beach for families with children - from toddlers to 10 year olds! The reef protects this area from any large swells or waves. The water here is very shallow with a gentle, sandy slope into the ocean. It almost seems like a huge outdoor swimming pool because of the shallow depth and calm water. From the waters edge, it's about 15 meters out before you reach a depth of 1 meter. Obviously the tides affect this, but you get the general idea. There is also a cool old boat that is anchored in place that the kids can play on and jump off of. Also convenient is the availability of some great food (and drinks!) just steps away.
Robert S — Google review
Cons: can get crowded Pros: calmer waves than other beaches in the area, kid friendly, in front of a few different bars and cafes (that have wifi), beautiful view of sunset A must visit 💚

Restaurante Lidia's Place is a must-visit for an authentic Costa Rican dining experience. Located in the local neighborhood of Puerto Viejo, this restaurant offers delicious Caribbean flavors, making their casado one of the tastiest in Costa Rica. Known for their exceptional rice and beans, Lidia's Place also serves fresh seafood like lobster and red snapper at great value. The friendly staff, including the welcoming owner Lidia herself, adds to the warm and inviting atmosphere.
We visited here for dinner after hearing such amazing reviews about the food and we’re definitely impressed. I ordered the shrimps ‘house style’ and my boyfriend ordered the oxtail. The portions were so generous and the rice and beans were the best we’ve had so far! Authentic menu in a lovely restaurant off the main road - nice and quiet with good on road parking away from the busy streets of Puerto Viejo. Would definitely recommend if you want authentic Caribbean food!

After a long ride from San Jose, we were craving a delicious late lunch in Costa Rica. On our first day in Puerto Viejo, we stumbled upon this hidden gem! It was just a short stroll from our hotel, making it super convenient. The service was impeccable, and the food was absolutely fantastic. We were served generous portions of red snapper with a zesty sauce, beans and rice, and fried plantains.

Lidia's place is very nice. They have very nice staff, especially Orlando. Great guy and nice vibe! I had such great food here. And most of all, Lidia made us feel special by coming out to greet us whilst we were eating. She also told us that we are very welcome to call her mom or auntie. She quoted, "If there is no love, there is no flavor." We were honored to meet her and felt special. The fish I had was a 500-gram red snapper freshly caught from the sea, and it was super good. Pura Vida!

Seguramente the best place to eat in Puerto Viejo de Talamanca !!! ❤️❤️❤️ Everything is home MADE with Love and authenticity. The service was done with warm heart from the moment we passed the door. 🙏🏻The place is cosy and lovely as such as the owner, Lidia. ☀️ She made us feel home and welcome. The food is generous and delightful just like her. I highly recommend the traditional Caribbean juices “Sorrell”🍹 and ask for the home made banana vinegar & chile 🌶. There are vegetarian 🌱 options

We had a very good visit. The food was fresh, homemade, and seasoned with a nice variety of spices. You can tell the kitchen puts real attention into the dishes. Lidia, who opened the restaurant 29 years ago, stopped by our table for a chat. It added a personal touch without feeling staged. Overall, a solid place with good food and a straightforward, welcoming atmosphere. Definitely worth a visit.

Great spot on the beach in the center of town. Was always open when many of the other places were closed. Lots of vegan options. Went there twice for dinner. The peanut butter smoothie with almond milk was amazing. Also had the mushroom tacos and the curry bowl. Both were tasty and filling.

The food was good. It's a little pricey for what it is. And don't get the bean dip with chips. Maybe we got a bad batch, but it was not good. The burrito, and steak and cheese sandwich were very good. Pina colada was ok. It's right on the beach so you can bring your gear to take a dip. The seating outside could be better organized, but it's workable. And because it's on the beach, you might see some crabs too! Their Saturday fire show is a lot of fun. Service is good, but very much in keeping with the pura vida lifestyle. Don't expect to be checked on frequently or get everything you need at once. The atmosphere is wonderful. The staff is super nice and friendly. There are a couple of spots to take photos, too. There are a couple of stores right around the corner for you to dip out and do some shopping and an ice cream place too with amazing flavors. Huge lot where you can park right next to it. It's a great place, day or night. They play great chill music and not so loud that you can't have a conversation, so that was a huge plus!

This spot has the best sunsets in all of PV, its right on the beach. I went here several times to just watch the sunset, get some food or drinks and socialize with people. Some nights there was music, dancers or fire artists on the beach. I absolutely loved their mixed drinks, I think I've almost tried all of them. My favorite was the dragonfruit margarita. The food is excellent as well, I tried several dishes but my favorite was the housemade coconut shrimp. It's so popular that some nights were sold out. Staff was amazing as well!

We had an incredible experience getting lost in this unique garden. Be sure to bring your hiking shoes and a baby carrier—it's not like the polite botanical gardens you might find in Europe. A must do if you’re in Puerto Viejo for few days. You can feel the love in this place. The people taking care of the lands are here for the second generation and they know what they are talking about. So many things to learn and discover about the Flora of Costa Rica. Especially if you like fruits you’ll be amazed by this place. They also give you some of their fruits at the end of your tour, some are pretty hard to find in shops. On this lands you’ll see trees that are pretty impressive in size and the owner will tell you a lot of interesting facts about it. I was amazed by the size and length of the roots of some trees, you can follow it on more then 20 meters on the floor. Have fun and take your time.

A Gardener's Paradise! As a gardener who values knowing where my food comes from, Finca la Isla was a dream come true. The visit starts with a helpful map and guide, setting the stage for a self-paced adventure through the lush grounds. It was incredible to see foods like chocolate and mangosteen growing right on the trees! The tour culminates with a tasting of exotic fruits grown on-site, which was a perfect ending. Be sure to wear good shoes, as the paths are more like a gentle hiking trail. This was a truly delightful and educational experience. I can't wait to visit their stand at the Saturday farmers' market to bring a taste of this paradise home!

We had a wonderful experience at Finca Las Islas. What a great farm! Peter and his son have truly created a botanical paradise, cultivating an incredible number of exotic fruit species. We absolutely loved our walk through the fruit tree forest and garden. The property is teeming with life; we spotted coatis everywhere, toucans, and even a sloth! The experience was topped off by the owners' generosity and knowledge. When we returned from our hike, Peter's son shared a tasting of delicious exotic fruits with us. We also had the pleasure of purchasing several exotic fruit trees from Peter to take home. A must-visit paradise in Puerto Viejo. Peter and his son have created something truly special!

A must do if you’re in Costa Rica - the owner is very knowledgeable and he showed us around and gave us some great fruits at the end of the tour, in fact they grow exotic fruits here that we’d never seen before, if you like fruits and want to see them growing (most people think fruits are grown in supermarkets) then I highly recommend this place. The trails are very well marked and the owner gives you a clear map and an information leaflet which is mega helpful. Highly recommended and with the fruit he gives you the entrance fee seems too cheap !

Nestled in Puerto Viejo, Roots Family Hostel offers a serene and laid-back atmosphere for budget-conscious travelers. The hostel provides clean rooms, a well-equipped kitchen, and a charming garden for relaxation. It boasts affordable private rooms and dorm beds, making it ideal for those on a tight budget. With its central location near beaches, restaurants, and bars, guests can easily explore the area. The spacious dorms and inviting communal areas create a cozy ambiance where guests can connect with fellow travelers.
We had a wonderful stay at Roots Family Hostel in Puerto Viejo! The location is perfect, right in the heart of the town, making it easy to explore everything. The staff is incredibly friendly and always ready to offer helpful tips on what to do and see in the area, which really made a difference during our stay. For just $7 a day, you can rent a bike directly from the hostel, which I highly recommend. Biking around Puerto Viejo is an amazing way to experience the area, with its beautiful beaches and vibrant culture. The kitchen is well-equipped with everything you need to cook your own meals, which is a nice bonus. The only downside to our stay was the room. We booked a single room for four nights, and while it was functional, it was a bit small and quite noisy. The walls are thin, so you can hear a lot of the activity in the common areas. However, considering the price and all the other great features of the hostel, this was a minor issue. Overall, I highly recommend Roots Family Hostel for anyone visiting Puerto Viejo! Great atmosphere, friendly staff, and a perfect base to explore this beautiful part of Costa Rica.

My friend and I stayed in the hostel for one week. We felt very welcomed there as the staff was really friendly and helped us out with everything. The hostel has a perfect size and is very social if you want to connect with other travelers but not too crowded. It really felt like a little family and the common spaces were always clean! The location is perfect because it’s so close to town but not too loud and we could always walk to the beach.

Roots family doesn’t only have family in their name, they live it. I fell in love with the interior, it feels so calm and immediately like home. The kitchen is beautiful, I had so much fun cooking on the gas stove. And the most important part: It’s very easy to meet people. Sometimes people stay a little longer and spend all the time together in a big group. It’s a vibe! One of my favorite hostels in the world. I hope I will be back soon.

Can highly recommend Roots Family Hostel if you’re coming to Puerto Viejo! Such a chill vibe, great dorms with individual fans and mosquito nets which you definitely need, very nice kitchen and common area. Everyone working here was super friendly and made you feel very welcome. My friends and I definitely felt a bit like at home for the couple of days we stayed here :)

Stayed at this hostel for 3 nights and I wouldn't be back or recommended staying there. The price you pay for what you get is a complete rip off. The 'private room' is a bamboo prison box sepeated by a bamboo sheet which is as useless as a regular sheet, the photos and descriptions on the website are very misleading. Any privacy is small. The hostel is crammed together the toilets and showers are beside the kitchen. The hot water in the shower worked once in the 3 days. Unfortunately we had neighbors in the 'private room' that turned the hostel into a party and were throwing up at 1am on the floor of their room which basically felt like our room. The kitchen is open all night which means there's a mess left In the morning so If you get up early before the volunteers you have to deal with a mess. We mentioned the room situation and got offered to move to a just as bad room, or pay more for the actual 'private room'. I know you can't choose what guests stay in a hostel and it can affect your stay but how the hostel staff deal with the guests is another story and unfortunately the staff and volunteers don't really care about the hostel and if you're not getting paid to work I wouldn't care either. You couldn't even tell who worked there to ask questions. My final word is pay your 'volunteers' and you might actually have people who bring value to your hostel and actually make it more enjoyable and clean!
Leigh L — Google review
The private room is a tiny bamboo box located in the showerroom. It is humid and smells moldy. The room it self is not private and has no window. the “shared” toilets Are located in the kitchen so everyone can hear you taking a shit while eating breakfast. It is pretty expensive so rent an Airbnb instead. You Will NOT regret it.
Julle F — Google review
Each bunk has a spacious locker curtain, and bug net which was great, the bed was comfy too. Volunteers were super nice too! Social but not party which was great. Very central location. Only downside is that the common areas were a bit cramped, the bathrooms smelled, and there were lots of mosquitos so bring bug spray!
Janice L — Google review
It's a cute space and you can rent bikes. But the dorm is a 10-sleeper with not enough space for your luggage and kinda open towards the common room towards the top. Vibe wasn't very social either, while I was there. But great cats!

The school's experienced instructors provide small group classes with personalized attention and a fun atmosphere. Whether you're a beginner or looking to improve your skills, Surf the Jungle ensures an unforgettable experience. With Salsa Brava, one of the world's renowned surf breaks nearby, it's an ideal spot for surf enthusiasts.
For the second year in a row my family has had surf lessons with Surf the Jungle and it has been the highlight of our vacation. This year we were 14 people- 8 kids and 6 adults and the experience was flawless. They were able to perfectly manage all of our kids ranging from ages 7-15- giving each of them full attention and quality explanations without anyone feeling left out or scared: this really sets them apart as professionals! Simultaneously the adults also got plenty of great waves, fun memories and a great workout! Misael has a special way with people and a connection with the ocean that immediately put everyone at ease. You can see that he truly loves what he does, and the other instructors and logistics staff were also amazing. I would definitely recommend Surf the Jungle to any and all families for an experience to remember ❤️
Lara B — Google review
My wife Chris and I recently visited Puerto Viejo and had the pleasure of taking three surf lessons and a kayak tour with Surf the Jungle. As complete beginners who had never surfed before, we couldn't have asked for a better introduction to the sport! Our first day at Playa Cocles with Misael was fantastic. He was patient, encouraging, and broke down the fundamentals in a way that made us feel comfortable in the water immediately. His expertise and teaching style gave us the confidence we needed as first-time surfers. For our second lesson, Jerry took us to the beautiful Punta Uva. His enthusiasm and guidance helped us build on what we learned the previous lesson, and the stunning beach setting made the experience even more memorable. Darshan led our final lesson at Playa Grande, where we were able to put all our new skills together. His professional instruction and amazing energy made our last surfing session the perfect culmination of our lessons. Beyond surfing, Darien guided us on an incredible kayak tour through the jungle. This adventure gave us the opportunity to spot wildlife including sloths, iguanas, and a variety of beautiful birds. His knowledge of the local ecosystem added tremendous value to the experience. We also want to give special mention to Nico, whose wonderful presence at the shop made us feel welcome and taken care of from the moment we arrived. His friendly demeanor and helpful attitude tied the whole experience together. If you're visiting Puerto Viejo and looking to learn how to surf or explore the natural beauty of the area, I couldn't recommend Surf the Jungle more highly. Their knowledge, personalized approach, and enthusiasm for surfing and nature made our experience unforgettable. They are incredible people. Five stars across the board - we'll definitely be back on our next visit to Puerto Viejo!

10/10 experience at Surf the Jungle! Misael was our instructor and he did an amazing job. We were all beginners and he was very clear in his instructions and very supportive. Our safety was his number one concern. He was constantly checking on us and would help us if we were drifting. He made us feel safe and had amazing vibes. He even went out of his way to find us some sloths by the beach and cracked open some coconuts for us. We all stood up on our boards and were riding waves. If you are looking for a surf class in Puerto Viejo, this is the one!
Sofia A — Google review
This surf school exceeded all my expectations! Misael is one of the best instructors I’ve ever met! He is professional, kind, and passionate. We surfed great waves, saw dolphins and even a sloth up close! After the lesson he treated us to fresh berries, sugar cane, and coconuts. All of this, just out of generosity 🌴🌸 It was a magical experience, and I cannot recommend this surf school enough!

Misael was incredible.Ppatient, kind, and so great at teaching our 5 year old his first ever surfing lesson. First waves, first stoke, and a memory we’ll treasure forever. 🌊 Puerto Viejo couldn’t have been a better spot for it! Huge thanks to Surf The Jungle and an even bigger shoutout to Misael for making it all happen. 🤙

Misael and Elia were two excellent instructors! Super knowledgeable, very patient, always available and attentive, as well as very friendly! They taught us so much and no one had any trouble catching the right waves and enjoying the experience, even though it was their first time on a board. I didn't have any problems with the language either, because they speak perfect English! I would definitely trust them again.

Our experience at the surf school over three days was fantastic. As total beginners, we started as a group of three friends but ended up as just two in the water. Misael was incredibly friendly and relaxed, which made the learning process enjoyable. His patient guidance led to noticeable improvement each day. Meeting him was a highlight of our trip. We highly recommend this surf school for its good instruction and fantastic atmosphere. It’s the best surf class in town! 🌊

This place was perfect for my wife and I. We stayed two nights here as part of our honeymoon and my only regret is not booking more nights. The room was very clean and bed was comfortable. the breakfast every morning was amazing. two of the best breakfasts we had the whole trip. They also offered opinions on dinner recommendations. both places they recommended were fantastic. beautiful B&B and wonderful owners. We will be back to stay again!

I had an amazing stay here during my April trip. The breakfast was delicious, rooms were nice/ clean, and the location was very safe and convenient! I was able to walk to most things. Couldn’t have asked for a better place to stay as a solo traveler. Thank you Martin & Dominique!

What a lovely B&B Martin and Dominique have! We started our trip in Puerto Viejo and had the best four nights. They paid attention to every detail: from the breakfast that looked (and tasted) delicious to free insect repellent in the room. Both are happy to help with all the tips they have. I would highly recommend this B&B.
Robbert B — Google review
The staff here were all very kind and helpful. The breakfasts that they make each day were some of the most delicious food we had while in Costa Rica and was a highlight of our trip! They provide lots of hotel amenities such as an outdoor communal dining area, a saltwater pool and towels, as well as room amenities such as coffee, tea, chocolate, fresh towels, and toiletries. The owner was very communicative during the booking process and the entire stay was very easy. We felt the value was excellent for the cost and would absolutely stay again. Highly recommend!

My partner and I stayed here for a few nights while visiting Puerto Viejo. Martin and Dominique were so kind and so accommodating. The rooms were clean and comfortable, the breakfast was delicious, and they had bikes we were able to rent for just a few dollars a day. With just a few rooms available, this is a quiet and relaxing place to stay. The pool is perfect and the location is central to anywhere you may want to go while visiting. They even let us keep our luggage there for a few hours before taking off to go to La Fortuna. We had a fantastic experience overall and we will be back!

We’ve stayed at Jody’s place several times when in Puerto Viejo. It’s such a beautiful sanctuary a stones throw from town and the beach. Her breakfast is one of the best in town and her rooms are top notch, so comfy and decorated beautifully! The kitchenettes are very well appointed with what you need for cooking meals in your room. Her place is spotless, extremely clean! My favorite is the pool with the waterfall. My husband loves the outdoor shower and bathroom next to the pool, super cute!

My best friend & I do a yearly trip together & this year we decided on Costa Rica! We did a lot of research on hostels & hotels in the Puerto Viejo area & when we came across Jody’s Sueno Grande Bed & Breakfast we just knew we had to book our stay there. From the moment we arrived (which was pretty late in the evening, after 7pm) we felt at home. The staff was very welcoming, friendly, & informative. We did the poolside room & it was so cute! Plenty of space for both of our luggage, pretty large bathroom with full sized bottles of shampoo, conditioner, body wash, lotion, & hand soap. A fun hanging chair that was the perfect spot for snapping cute photos, robes, a safe. They even had local bug spray & reef safe sunscreen for use, & a bar of locally made chocolate. We originally added on breakfast for our first morning there, but ended up doing it again for our last morning because it was incredible. We sat & had wonderful conversations with the assistant manager while she prepared our breakfast - she gave us a lot of great recommendations & just was fun to get to know her! Jody, the owner, was so great at communicating. Answered a lot of my questions over email, helped book our shuttle for SJO to the b&b. I could go on! I would give them more than 5 stars if I could. If I ever find myself in PV again in the future Sueno Grande will be the first place I reach out to to book my stay. Highly recommend! Pura vida to Jody & her amazing staff!

Puerto Viejo has so much to offer and Sueno Grande does not disappoint. This was our second trip Puerto Viejo and we wouldn’t think to stay anywhere else. Jody is an exceptional host and will immediately make you feel at home. You’ll enjoy breakfast in bed each morning that is made up of something a little different each day but always equally delicious. The pool is always just right and the perfect way to cool off after a day around town/at the beach. The rooms are beyond accommodating, they are absolutely luxurious. My husband and I have now stayed in two and they were well equipped and then some. You’ll enjoy quiet and efficient AC, fresh and plush linens, and don’t even get me started on the bathrooms! The showers are incredible and filled with locally sourced soaps. I couldn’t say enough amazing things about Jody! She set up all of our travel accommodations and made sure to greet us with a smile upon our arrival. She offered great advice about Puerto and amazing recommendations. You can tell she cares about each guest that comes into her oasis. You will feel safe, comfortable, and cared for at Sueno Grande.

Casa Wolaba is a charming hostel situated in Puerto Viejo Town, offering an ideal base for exploring the stunning beaches of Manzanillo. The hostel features a warm and inviting common area as well as a fully equipped kitchen for guests to socialize and prepare meals together. Accommodation options include 4 or 6 bed dorms, private or shared double rooms, all complete with hot water and towels.
Excellent hostel all around. I booked a private room, which was across the street from the actual hostel. Felt like a hotel room, honestly (very clean and well kept, too) except you also get to have access to a kitchen and other hostel facilities, so lots of opportunities to save $$$ during your travels. The location is really great, too. They put a lot of emphasis on social activities, so it can be pretty loud at night if you're introverted and a home body. I was generally exhausted each night from hiking a lot, so it wasn't a big deal. But ear plugs may help here. Thanks for hosting me.

Casa Wolaba Hostel Review Casa Wolaba is a vibrant hostel located in the heart of Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, Costa Rica. It offers both dormitory and private accommodations, all equipped with air conditioning for comfort. Guests can enjoy a spacious communal kitchen, a cozy lounge area with hammocks, and daily social activities, fostering a friendly and sociable atmosphere. Additionally, guests have access to a swimming pool at the partner hostel, El Clan, just across the street. The hostel's central location is ideal, with easy access to local eateries and the beach. While many guests appreciate the cleanliness and the opportunity to meet fellow travelers, some have noted that the social environment may be more suited to younger guests. Overall, Casa Wolaba provides a lively and enjoyable stay for those looking to experience the vibrant culture of Puerto Viejo. Pro Tips: Bring a padlock for the in-room lockers to secure your belongings. Earplugs might be useful if you're sensitive to noise, as the hostel hosts regular social events. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️☆

I enjoyed my stay here. The rooms are clean, the vibes are good, the staff is nice and the whole layout makes it easy to meet new people. The location is close enough that you can walk everywhere but still far enough from the center to avoid loud noises. The only complaint I have is that we couldnt put our clothes in the sun to dry after a day of heavy rain because they dont want you to hang your stuff everywhere. I understand why this generally makes sense but imo you can do an exception after a rainy day when everybodys things are wet.

Next time i am in puerto viejo i will be staying here again- it is perfectly located you can walk about 3 mins to the beach and the bars and restaurants. It’s tucked off so it’s not super busy infront which is good for pick ups. I don’t like shared rooms so of course i recommend getting the private- it’s not that much more expensive and it truly changes the whole experience. The workers explained everything perfectly. Pura Vida!
Jewel M — Google review
Perfect location in a quiet area but close to the beach. Super spacious room and private bathroom (which has a slightly odd layout where you have to shut the door to be able to get to the shower but it worked for us)! They have activities on every evening (Friday is drinks before a bar crawl so it’s a little louder but they also do movie nights etc so something for everyone)!
Carys R — Google review
We chose this hostel because of its location and resonable price in an expensive area. Beds were pod style, with AC turned on at night, which was so lovely. Rooms were a little cramped for a 6 bed dorm, so we needed to take turns packing up bags with the other roommates. The kitchen was fully fully stocked but again really cramped for how many people were making their own meals so time your cooking differently than everyone else. The staff behind reception were chatty, friendly, and helpful to all of our traveling needs. You can book all the shuttles, bikes, tours, etc. through the hostel, but it will be a few bucks more expensive than doing all the figuring out by yourself. Overall, we loved it here, and the vibe was perfect for chill nights and early bedtimes.

So I was here for one night because I arrived early to Puerto Viejo. I then had to switch hostels to one I had previously booked. Let me tell you I immediately regretted not being able to stay here my whole time in Puerto Viejo. Casa Wolaba is a phenomenal hostel. The staff are so kind. The rooms are great (the dorms are kind of cubicle style so you get privacy in your bed which is always a good thing). And the atmosphere is fantastic. I met so many amazing people here. The place is set up for everyone to meet each other and have a good time. It’s also perfectly located in the main town area. Easy to get around. I’ll put it this way I ended up having to stay at another hostel because I couldn’t cancel that reservation but every and I mean every night I was hanging out at Casa Wolaba.

Personally one of the nicest hostels I stayed in so far. Location is perfect, in town, close to all bars and restaurants and only 5min walk from the beach. You get discount to rent bikes around the corner. The hostel itself is very beautiful and clean and made with a lot of love. The dorms have ac, dormbeds are super comfortable and they all have a curtains for more privacy. Kitchen is also always very clean and has everything you need to cook your meals. The volunteers, workers and owners are extremely friendly and welcoming. I would absolutely recommend staying here :)

Couldn’t recommend this hotel enough! The attention to customer needs: Daily towels for both the pool and room, Included Laundry, Well equipped kitchen were all so appreciated. Rooms were decorated really nicely and each room has a private balcony overlooking the lush green plants and much enjoyed pool. Hosts are welcoming and pay attention to the fine details, they went above and beyond for us even as far as helping us with getting something from the pharmacy. The hotel is in a good location around 10/15 minute walk from the centre and we found it so peaceful listening to the birds that surrounded us. Would definitely come back! Thank you so much!

We are currently staying here, and it's one of the best small hotel experiences we've ever had! Owned and run by a Spanish family, they have done a fantastic job creating a wonderful experience for guests. The photos posted online don't do it justice—everything is so much better in reality! The property consists of only four rooms, each very clean and cozy, with tasteful decorations. Daily room cleaning, fresh towels and a free laundry service are included, which is super considerate of the owners. The AC works great, and there's high water pressure with hot water. A shared open kitchen and a wonderful saltwater pool are definite bonuses! The property is tucked away from the main street, making it super peaceful and quiet. Overall, we couldn't be happier—such a delightful experience!

Wow what an amazing stay! Tonet and Nadia are such lovely hosts. We stayed for 6 nights in this beautiful accommodation. The bamboo rooms had everything we needed and were beautifully decorated. We felt instantly at home and we were so happy we choose to end our trip here. Tonet and Nadia really thought about everything in this stunning property. We felt in the middle of nature with the amazing plants and flowers all around. The balcony was spacious and we enjoyed relaxing there on rainy days. The breakfast was delicious and having a kitchen next to our room with coffee/tea and fresh water available was great. They offered a free laundry service and our room was refreshed/ cleaned every day if we wanted it. They also offer beach towels which you can use by the pool or to take to the beach - ideal since we were travelling light and didn't have these things with us. Our 3 year old loved playing in the pool and also with the little play-kitchen - Nadia also offered more toys if we needed it for her :-) In the evening the property felt so cosy and relaxing with the beautiful lighting around the pool and in the plants. There was a QR code in the room which made it easy to view the menu and there were plenty of recommendations in the neighbourhood. The location is also ideal - away from the business main street but just a short walk away. Highly highly recommended! Thank you so much for a wonderful stay! :-D

The hosts are really friendly and very helpful. Nadia washed all of our clothes after they were soaked from traveling. They had some great recommendations too. The place itself is SUPER clean, the pool is nice and the room is just amazing. The shared kitchen is very nice too. You really get great value for what you pay. Great location, just away from the noise yet close to the town. Definitely on the list if we ever return and can recommend 200%.

We recently had the pleasure of staying at black bamboo and I must say, it exceeded all my expectations. The room we stayed in was impeccably clean and beautifully decorated, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere. One of the highlights of our stay was discovering that Nadia is fluent in French. As French speakers ourselves, it was a pleasant surprise and made communication effortless. Her fluency in the language allowed for an even more personalized and enjoyable experience during our stay. Furthermore, the kitchen in the guest house was immaculate and fully equipped. It was a pleasure to cook and prepare meals in such a well-maintained space. The cleanliness and organization of the kitchen added to the overall comfort and convenience of our stay. I definitely recommend this Bed & breakfast to anyone visiting Puerto Viejo.

Beautiful garden, clean swimming pool, tasty and affordable breakfast, new furnishings. We spent a lot of time by the pool because you feel immersed in nature without having to leave “home.” Nadia and her husband are great hosts, with good recommendations for local activities, drivers, and restaurants. We loved the Cahuita National Park walk and the ice cream place they recommended :) Our air conditioning didn’t work when we arrived, and they had it fixed within an hour. 5 min walk to town. Highly recommend and would come back. Way cleaner and more comfortable than most places I’ve stayed in Costa Rica.

I cannot recommend you enough a stay at Black Bamboo. We were supposed to stay 3 nights and we extended for 2 more nights as we felt so good in this place. Nadia and Tonet are the best hosts. They’ll welcome you like family and give the best tips of places do go and what to do in the area. Rooms are incredibly clean. You have a fridge to store your goods in your rooms and the kitchen is shared. Tonet’s breakfast is a must try! The center is close by (10m walk). You have a place to park your car inside. La Tribu is a laid-back and welcoming hostel that caters to budget-conscious backpackers and travelers. The simple and clean rooms, along with communal areas, provide ample opportunities for socializing and meeting fellow travelers. Despite some contradictory feedback about the comfort of the beds and reception service, the hostel offers a well-equipped kitchen, comfortable dorms (albeit with some squeaky beds), and plans for introducing yoga, meditation, and more events.
One of the best stays I’ve had. Amazing hostel. Reception very friendly and helpful. Very clean, pretty much every day staff is cleaning the facilities which is amazing. The kitchen is unreal! So spacious and well equipped. So fun to cook in this environment, and saves a lot of money. Love the yoga classes and the evening activities. I had an amazing experience, all the girls were so kind and friendly, great way to make friends. I felt very safe, amazing location. Unfortunately some nights there weren’t warm water in the shower but besides that the stay was 10/10, Would highly recommend!!!

I stayed at the hostel for 1 week in July and even though I loved my experience because I felt safe and I liked the group activities, I wanted to mention that the receptionist ruined my trip a bit. She was never smiling, spoke very stupidly, I always felt like I was bothering her. I was afraid to go and ask her for information or for a lock with my bike. I find that when you work in customer service, it’s the least you can do to be kind and helpful to others. I could also hear her talking to the volunteer and her tone was very dry. Anyway, I felt really good, it was clean but I think this place should change the receptionist, her name was Vanessa

I loved my stay at La Tribu! By far one of the best experiences i’ve ever had! As a first time solo female traveler I was a bit nervous but I can confidently say I never felt unsafe, all the women are so welcoming and nice, the activities they plan are so cute and fun! The rooms are immaculate and surprisingly private for a shared space! They have restrooms in the main area but also in each dorm that are all kept very clean! The kitchen is very clean and spacious as well! The location is great for people without a car it’s walking distance from everything to food, the beach and shops! They also offer bike rentals for less than $10 a day which came in very handy to ride around to nearby beaches like cocles and punta uva! I would 100% recommend La Tribu to every woman looking for a safe space to travel alone or with friends

Very clean and welcoming hostel! The layout of the hostel is really smart, everything is built around the (very nice) kitchen area and big table so it is really easy to get to know each other. I even extended my stay cause the vibes between staff and the girls is so great and there’s always group activities in the evening!

The hostel is very clean and the staff super friendly & helpful. They do lots of mostly free activities and put lots of love in the place. The yoga place could need a little more love and then would be a nice alternative chill out area during ongoing activities in the main one. At the moment it's not really possible to "escape" the party mood. Still at 10pm the latest it's quiet and you can sleep.

I'll start by saying that I meant to stay here for 4 nights and I stayed two weeks, and I'm not the only one, I think at least 4 of us rearranged our trips to extend. This hostel is special and truly becomes a home for the girls. There's a peace that comes with there being only girls here and the volunteers are incredible. Sam, Hila, Cata, Nadia, and Juliana made my experience incredible, they went above and beyond always always always for everyone here and I can't wait to come back. As for the hostel itself, it's super clean, spacious, safe, and centrally located to get everywhere easily. Cocles is a 10 minute scenic walk away, manzanillo, punta uva, and cahuita are a quick (cheap) bus ride away. If you ever have any questions, the volunteers know literally everything and give the best recs. Highly recommend La Tribu Day, between entry, transport (the bus does not stop close to the waterfall entrances, just trust if you're not local don't wing it) and experience prices for a chocolate tour and facial-- it's a steal (also highly recommend not to go to BriBri alone, from experience). With your Tribu bracelet, you also have access to casa wolaba and la clan hostel areas and activities too, which is nice because they're more party-hostels and I'd loved being able to enjoy that and then come back to a hostel that's always quiet after 10. Towels are a $10 deposit that you get back when you return. Kitchen is well equipped if you like to cook. Pillows are really comfy and bedsheets are soft and clean, but sometimes the room gets cold so if you have an extra blanket I'd bring it. It's a small town, but you never run out of things to explore or do on any budget. As you may have heard, keep some colones in cash-- bus ticket offices only accept cash as well as street vendors.

I loved this place. The vibes were awesome especially around night time when some of the staff rally people to go out with them. My friends stayed in a private room & I stayed in a shared dorm. Wish the AC was a little stronger in the shared dorm but that’s my only complaint if any. I liked that we had access to some of the other hostels as well & there was a pre game there before we all went to the club. It was another opportunity to meet new people. You get a wrist band & there is overnight security & a gate with a code. All the women, staff & residents, were kind & sociable. They reached out to me via what’s app to get an estimate on my arrival. The tribu whatsapp group was nice to get to know the other girls & events in town. This is also an optimal location for going out & going to the beach. If you want to see the other beaches there’s $7 bike rentals or close to transport to get you there. The public Mepe bus drops you off in town if you coming from a different part of CR which is less than a 10 min walk to tribu. I would stay here again!

Puerto Viejo is a charming village in Costa Rica that offers a vibrant cafe culture with an array of fresh salads, fruit smoothies, and delicious baked goods. The town boasts beautiful beaches, warm locals, diverse flora and fauna, exquisite cuisine, and rich cultural heritage. Visitors are captivated by the magical charm of this place. The central location provides convenience without the hustle and bustle of the main street.
Nice village with plenty of restaurants and bars. We enjoyed staying here 3 days. You must rent a bike to go to Manzanillo, a tour of 12 km. Also up North the National Park of Cahuita has a beautiful walking path. Worth walking, we found it one of our favorites.

We had an incredible tour with Esteban! We started with a small hike around Punta Uva before getting into the kayaks. Immediately upon beginning our tour, Esteban was spotting wildlife and teaching us about the various flora and fauna surrounding us. We were surprised with how much Costa Rican history and culture we learned from him, too! We saw several sloths as well as an abundance of turtles, iguanas, bats, and lizards. Esteban was very personable and fun to chat with throughout our tour, taking his time with us along with having a great eye for wildlife!

I booked the kayak journey for my husband’s birthday, and it was truly stunning. Elmer was such a great guide, full of wisdom, knowledge, humor, and good energy. We usually don’t enjoy guided tours, but this one left us feeling inspired, relaxed, and deeply connected. We saw plenty of wildlife, with highlights including the red-headed woodpecker and the peaceful sense of being in the Amazon as we paddled. Thank you for curating such a special experience. Highly recommend!

This tour was unforgettable! We hiked through the jungle, saw birds and lots of frogs. We passed through an indigenous community, learning about their culture and medicinal plants. Our guide was very knowledgeable and made the experience even more special. We tasted wild fruits and ended at the most amazing waterfall, where we swam for a while, it was incredibly refreshing! On the way back, we even saw a snake and a sloth! This was a beautiful mix of nature, culture, and adventure. Highly recommended!🌿

We had a wonderful time paddling peacefully down the river with Lynch as our guide. We loved the relaxed and informative approach, allowing us to appreciate our surroundings away from man-made paths or roads. He told us about the various plants and animals we came across, as well as being thoughtful about the bigger picture of the role of tourism in Costa Rica. We also went on a short walk to a viewing spot on Punta Uva- again, super-chilled and a fun addition to the kayaking. Would highly recommend!

What a spectacular experience! Elmer was such a wonderful guide!! I booked a private tour for the women I am hosting at my retreat and the experience was flawless all the way through! We did the river tour + walk to the Punta Uva lookout point and cave. We saw sloths, toucans, turtles, lizards, iguanas, a hawk! I will be booking with Caribe Sur PV to take my family next. Thank you Lynch and Elmer 🙏🏼♥️

We had an amazing tour! Lynch was able to accommodate us, my wife is a double leg amputee, and he made sure we were all set and ready to rock. Juanito was our guide and was amazing. He went above and beyond and even found us some frogs. We even gave him a ride after our tour and he pointed out things along the way. The highlight of our trip. We saw lots of sloths, monkeys, turtles, bats, frogs, spiders, basilisk lizards, and a swimming iguana. If you’re reading this just book it. You won’t be disappointed. You will be if you don’t book because wherever you go won’t be as good as this.

We did the clear transparent kayak tour with Juanito. A very experienced tour guide who made us feel comfortable and relaxed. Juanito showed us sloths, howler monkeys, spider monkeys, turtles, jesus lizard, toucans, macaws, hercules crabs, jungle shampoo, mountain chicken... It made our day! It was in July, in a sunny day with little wind.

Bicycle rental service
Tuanis Rent a Bike is the perfect choice for exploring the small town of Puerto Viejo. Their super nice bikes at good prices make it easy to reach most places in the area. The bikes are well-maintained, equipped with gears and comfy seats, and come with a good large lock for security. There's no excessive paperwork involved, and you can rent a bike for 24 hours at an affordable price. Plus, there's an ATM conveniently located right next door for cash transactions.
I rented a bike but couldn't use it, so I left it there all day... I came back and Felipe offered and gave me a refund, no questions asked. They're so nice!
Adrian E — Google review
I had the worst experience that I’ve had in all of Costa Rica at tuanis bike rental. There’s nothing tuanis about the owner of this bike rental place. I wish I had read the negative reviews before coming here… you live you learn I guess
Josué B — Google review
Avoid at All Costs – Worst Bike Rental in Puerto Viejo This place is awful it’s a complete joke. The bikes are rusted, falling apart, and borderline dangerous. Chains slip, brakes barely work, and the seats feel like torture devices. You’d be safer riding a shopping cart down a hill.the customer service was terrible! The one and only bad experience I had in Puerto!! Never again….
Sarah H — Google review
Stay away!!! The bike chain of my husbands bike broke and we were far away. Not came off but actually broke. The guy didn’t send help or assisted us at all. My husband had to organize himself a taxi and I had to come back by my own all alone over 12km.

Stay away!!! The bike chain broke and we were far away. Not came off but actually broke. The guy didn’t send help or assisted us at all. On top of that he charged us for an extra day. Definitely not worth the money that you save renting from this guy. Go to a real shop.
Rafael P — Google review
Avoid at All Costs – Worst Experience in Puerto Viejo If I could give this place negative stars, I would. This is hands down the worst bike rental shop in Puerto Viejo, run by a bitter, nasty old man who seems to wake up every morning fueled by the singular goal of ruining someone’s day. If customer service were an Olympic sport, he’d be disqualified for excessive hostility. Let’s start with the bikes—if you can even call them that. They are rusted, barely-functioning death traps with chains that fall off mid-ride, brakes that don’t work, and seats that might as well be made of nails. I wouldn’t wish these hunks of junk on my worst enemy. Renting from here is less about transportation and more about testing your survival skills. Now, let’s talk about the delightful owner. Imagine the most miserable, unhinged, aggressive old man you’ve ever encountered, multiply that by ten, and you might come close to this guy. He acts like he’s doing you a favor by taking your money, then treats you like absolute garbage the second you step inside. Rude, condescending, and downright hostile—his presence alone is enough to make you regret ever coming to Puerto Viejo. And God help you if you dare to ask a question or, heaven forbid, expect the bike to actually work. He’ll either ignore you completely or launch into an angry tirade about how “this is just how things are in Costa Rica”—as if basic decency and functioning bicycles are somehow foreign concepts. Returning the bike? Another nightmare. He inspects it like he’s checking for microscopic scratches on a Ferrari, looking for any excuse to keep your deposit. Spoiler alert: he will find something. A speck of dirt? That’ll be extra. A tire slightly deflated (probably because it was already falling apart when you got it)? You’re paying for that. The seat moved slightly? That’s a damage fee. By the time you leave, you’ll feel like you just got scammed, verbally abused, and emotionally drained—all for the privilege of riding the worst bike you’ve ever encountered. Do yourself a favor: go literally anywhere else. Rent a bike from a different shop. Walk. Crawl. Ride a stray dog. Anything is better than this place.
DEXTER — Google review
Warning! Do not be fooled by the advertised price!! I ended up having to pay a bunch of extra fees that were not disclosed at the beginning of the rental... Save yourself the trouble and go somewhere else!

Caribbean restaurant
Soda el Ranchito is a local gem located in downtown Puerto Viejo, serving up a family recipe of traditional Caribbean dishes that have been passed down for generations. Despite its limited menu, the food is delicious and well-prepared. The restaurant's location along the jungle trail between Puerto Viejo and Playa Cocles offers unobstructed views of Salsa Brava and the surfers riding its extreme waves.
Best food in Puerto Viejo! It’s a hidden, simple, unassuming spot right on the beach with delicious local Caribbean food. You can miss it if you are walking in a hurry, so I’m so glad a friend recommended it to me! It is right between the Salsa Brava restaurant and Amimodo restaurant, but you have to walk on the beach rather than the street side to find it. My fav dishes here are their specialty Rondon soup, Caribbean Chicken plate and patacones. They have the best patacones I’ve tasted in Costa Rica hands down! The juice was also freshly prepared and very delicious. Their location right on the beach is amazing!! You can watch the waves and surfers as you dine. 5 stars!! Highly recommend this gem of a soda - El Ranchito!!
Khadeejah C — Google review
I don’t even need to go to other restaurants to know that this is my favorite place to eat in puerto Viejo. I prefer sodas to restaurants and this soda is the best!! It’s location is very cool, hidden back on the beach amongst the trees and only accessible via beach. There are only a few tables, so it can’t get too crowded. The vibe is very low key and easy. The menu is petite but delicious. We had chicken rice & beans, rondon, coconut water, and lemonade. All perfect. The wait staff was also very kind and calm and friendly. Absolute best!
Heather N — Google review
The best rondon in puerto viejo. We went 3 different times on our trip. The rice and beans with shrimp or chicken was also amazing. Quaint, local vibes on the beach. You have to walk by the Salsa Brava bar along the beach to get there. Sometimes there’s even a little bonfire going. This place is A MUST!!! Bring cash.
Margo W — Google review
Excellent place. I can’t believe this Soda does not have more reviews. May be based on its location, but that’s part of what makes it so special. It is located along the jungle trail between Puerto Viejo and Playa Cocles, just past the Salsa Brava restaurant. It has outdoor seating that has unobstructed views of Salsa Brava, and the surfers who dare to ride Salsa Brava’s extreme waves. As for the food; it has a limited menu but does the local favorites very well. I had the Caribbean Chicken with rice and beans and plantains. Excellent! I especially liked the vinegar based hot sauce with pickled peppers and cabbage. I washed my lunch down with a chilled coconut. Not bad for only C4,000. Tasty and reasonable entrees with a multimillion dollar view. Yes please!
John S — Google review
12/10 for the food. Fish was a poem, staff super friendly, location beautiful directly at the beach. We went three days in a row and sometimes I’m still thinking about the texture and the spices of the fish- even after months since we’ve been there.
K N — Google review
Ordered the Caribbean chicken for lunch - it was clearly from the day before and not even properly reheated. It was two boneless pieces of tepid, super dry chicken breast with no sauce. I asked for some sauce as that is how Caribbean chicken is supposed to be - they brought me a few tablespoons - still nowhere close to enough to make up for how dry the chicken was. It also tasted very under-seasoned - really just onions and a bit of garlic. And the cabbage slaw had no dressing and tasted like lemon soap. I tasted my friend's fish - it was cooked properly but also very little flavour and bland seasoning. The waiter was kind enough to let me taste the rondun soup and this was much better than the chicken and fish with rice and beans that we ordered. I just wasn't in the mood for it - it's like a Caribbean chowder - thick with a nice smoky flavour as it's cooked on open fire.

Tasty, fresh, and simple. The kind of restaurant you dream for on the beach. Staff is super friendly and vibes are pleasant. For those seeking authentic experience! BYOB allowed.

The Amazing Treehouse and Nature Observatorio in Puerto Viejo, Limon, Costa Rica is a remarkable experience set within the Refugio Nacional Gandoca-Manzanillo. It offers the opportunity to observe the diverse flora and fauna from a height of 25 meters in the jungle canopy. The hike to reach the treehouse is an adventure in itself, led by knowledgeable guides who share insights about the untouched jungle. Climbing up to the treehouse using ropes adds an element of fun and challenge.
If you know excelent place times it like 10 x and that is not even close to how amazing treehouse is. You hike through untouched jungle with owner of treehouse who is after many years he spended in jungle professional nature guide. We saw many species of animals which we didnt even see in 7 hours hikes in other national parks. Hike to treegouse takes up to 40 minutes. And now treehouse: You need to climb up to the tree using rope its super funny thing to do it up to 30meters from ground. The thing is its hard to explain how amazing it is you need to see. everything view of jungle, sounds that animals making. parrots toucans flying around you in so close distance. You are like part of the forest :) The treehouse is construction like you never see somwhere else Peter done great job. whole project with peter idea making great concept how to protect nature while you can see it from close distance. I applaud him since this is great idea to make money from tourism and buy even more jungle to protect more. Do not except 5star luxury thing... this is even better but not from luxury side, from side of how easy you can be in touch with nature when you up on tree :) There is everything you need: Plenty of hammock and other hanging chillling things. Table where you enjoy great local dinner after they vring it to you attach to the rope and you took it up to you. the bed under the roof where you enjoy the symphony of night jungle. if google have 10 stara i even give it 100 :) Thanks for people who do their job with suxch a passion and eco friendly. Easy 40 minute hike, to the tree house. Along the way you are shown many kinds of jungle wildlife and many amazing things that the jungle has to offer. Peter, the owner and his partner, Jason, are very informative and friendly. Climbing up to the tree house, by rope, is challenging, but fun. Once you get to the top, the temperature and humidity change. It becomes cooler and dryer, with a nice breeze. Peter is very passionate about protecting the environment and is eager to show you how the tree house is suspended from the tree and not hurt, in any way, by sharing the space, with the tree house. I recommend this hike for people interested in jungle tours, tree houses and seeing the forest canopy, from a bird's eye view.

If you're looking for an exciting surfing experience, head to Playa Cocles on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. This popular surf spot offers plenty of waves, making it a favorite among surfers. Keep an eye out for red flags signaling unsafe swimming conditions when the waves get big. While the beach can get crowded at times, it's still a fun place to catch some quick rides and enjoy easy paddling.
Playa Cocles. Plenty of surf. Quick rides, no barrels. Easy paddle. The beach is actually more fun. Can be a zoo at times. Oh, and that's not fog, it's funny smoke. Be advised.

Playa Punta Uva is a stunning gem on the Costa Rican coast, renowned for its soft white sands and inviting turquoise waters. This beach is an ideal destination for families, thanks to its generally calm conditions that make swimming safe and enjoyable. For those seeking adventure, Playa Punta Uva offers fantastic opportunities for snorkeling and scuba diving among vibrant coral reefs teeming with marine life. Kayaking and paddleboarding are also popular activities here, allowing visitors to explore the serene waters at their own pace.
Very pretty stretch of beach with interesting rocks in one part, directly goes up to an expanse of rain forest on one end, soft sand throughout, minimal waves, and a river lagoon. We spent the better part of the week staying at the bungalows right next to it, so got to experience a few of the beautiful sunsets.

Playa Punta Uva is a beautiful and very clean beach. There were enough shade area so that you can enjoy the beach and white sand. No rocks which makes more safe. Many tourists and families with kids were there. Free parking was limited but we were able to find both times when we visited the beach. Highly recommended.

One of the first beaches that we explored. The water was so clear and calm and the sand is soft. It feels very quiet and private in this area compared to some of the other beaches. Take the short hike to Punta Uva for great views and pictures.

I loved it here, but I loved all the beaches in the area! We rented kayaks which was fun, but felt a bit silly since the river is actually a ravine and doesn’t go very far. Revision: It turns out the ravine was blocked by a bunch of trees from a big storm. We went again with a guide, saw spider monkeys! And travelled farther.

Beautiful beach, definitely the beach to hit if you're looking for a place to camp out on. Beach front parking, you can find your own secluded spot, and the sand is some of the best sand I've felt under my toes! You will certainly not be disappointed with this beach! If you are looking for a place to hang out for the day, that is more private and secluded, this beach is your ticket. It'll be hard to find any locals selling goods, food will require you to either run a few min back into town, or plan to bring something prepared or to cook.

Outdoor Activities
Playa Cocles is a popular white sand beach known for its surfing, swimming, and sunbathing opportunities in a laid-back atmosphere. Unlike the intense waves at nearby Salsa Brava, Playa Cocles offers surfers steep lefts and rights that break on the sandy beach. The best wave breaks near an offshore island, providing a mellow left-hand longboarder's ride over a deep reef during the right tide and swell conditions from December to March.
This is the beach you should plan to spend most of your time at! The beach is full of people and activities, you can easily find surf lessons, and food can be hard by just walking from the beach! Locals will be wondering through with all kinds of homemade goodies and gifts. Locals definitely prefer to spend their day here, and you can expect to see beach games, surfers, and even fire twirlers at night! This place was our highlight for fun in the sun! The sand bar makes it easy for swimming without going out deep, be weary of the surf as the waves can be rather big and crash on the beach. You will truly enjoy your experience here!

This is a really fun beach! Tons of action!! Great waves, restaurants directly on the beach, a gym on the beach, volleyball courts, beautiful sunset, lots of young people…..my young adults kids did not want to leave! 😆 Also nice was the large number of life guards present which made us feel safe because the ocean here is pretty rough. This is an absolute beach to go to. 😎

Amazing beach, one of my favorites! Good vibes, nice sea and water. Felt safe and I had some good swims. Also a nice walk from the city
Maxime S — Google review
Small surf at this beach or at the time of our visit. Only a few people out surfing. Life guards were present and kept people where they needed to be for safety. This is a big wide open beach with lots of space to spread out and not be on top of other people. Not a lot of shade as there is at many other nearby beaches. Bringing an umbrella or canopy would be an option for helping get out of the direct sunlight.
Lanster — Google review
Beautiful beach with many bar options. The weekends on vacation could be very crowded with lots of loud music. For people who likes peaceful places like me It could be a nightmare. For the ones who like lot of people and nightlife, It is perfect.

Beautiful beach with relaxed vibe and pretty wild and unspoiled sorroundings. If you have a chance, get a walk to the nearby little jungle, there’s a couple of great viewpoints as well the possibility to spot wildlife!
Natalia A — Google review
Very long and beautiful beach with easy access to parking and nearby vendors. Might have been just the day we visited but the waves and current were too strong to swim in (even a couple of feet in) and the beach doesn’t offer any shade anywhere close to the water so we ended up leaving and going to another beach with calmer waters for swimming.
Rachelle M — Google review
This is such an amazing beach with the perfect waves to play in all day long. Boogie board and surfboards are available for rental along with classes. The most beautiful women spend the day here ❤️

Playa Chiquita is a secluded beach offering privacy and beautiful surroundings. The sandy shore is lined with trees and reefs, perfect for swimming and snorkeling. A nearby hotel provides convenient amenities. The water is calm, clear, and warm, making it ideal for aquatic activities like swimming near the coral reefs or going further out into the sea beyond the waves. Playa Chiquita boasts stunning vegetation that allows visitors to find private spots along the beach.
A hidden gem in Costa Rica. Inaccessible by road, you have to walk a trail through the rainforest to get to this beach which makes it all the more enchanting. I spent time over Christmas 2023 and New Year in this very area, and visited this secluded beach every day to soak up the tranquillity. The jungle lines the sand which provides shade from around lunchtime onwards. As it's hidden away it seems nobody visits here and you become quite attached to your own private beach. The Caribbean Sea is so clear here, so ideal for swimming and snorkelling. We carried body boards through the jungle on our 1st day, but the waves were too small for that, so I wouldn't bother. During swell season, the rip tides are no joke so be very careful. Every day, around a half an hour before sunset, a handful of Great Green Macaws fly over the beach, heading homewards for the evening. You could set your watch to it. What an amazing sight, although you will definitely hear them before you see them. This sight also makes the locals very happy, as only 10 years ago there was none of these magnificent birds left in the wild in this area. Conservation and a reintroduction program in the Puerto Viejo area have successfully brought these back from the dead and it is a joy to hear their calls over the sound of the waves while sitting on this beach. You can also see lots of other wildlife activity on the jungle walk to here - namely 3 different types of toucans which seem plentiful. Another world! This is the perfect place to escape the corporate grind and clear your mind.

Beach has a strong undertow. There is a warning sign when you get there. When the tide is in there is drop off and rocks to be aware of. This is an unsupervised beach. We had to walk down a path to get to the beach. The path has tons of holes with crabs. 🦀 At points we had to take a path cut through the jungle to stroll at length down the beach. Note this is not a “groomed” beachfront. It is lovely tho.
Vani E — Google review
This is a lovely beach, quite secluded, so it almost feels private. At least when you walk a little bit along the shore to a quiet area. It's nice to just relax here in the shades, or not, if you like to get tanned. Beware of the rip tides, it was quite intense when we were there. There is no supervision, just warning flags and some rescue materials at certain points. No beach amenities, just one beach club to the north side of the beach.
Benjamin P — Google review
This is a nice beach when the tide is out and the waves on the small side. There are tide pools that you can sit and soak in, while the small waves wash in fresh water every so often. We visited on a higher tide, big wave action day , so the pools were hard to stay in. The seas were very rough and large swell in the water. Lots of covered space under the trees. Good shade.
Lanster — Google review
Small and calm beach. Great for kiddos. The beach access however is narrow, with a ditch on one side and barbed wire on the other. Not great for kiddos.

A beautiful beach on the coast of the Caribbean Sea in the Atlantic Ocean. The coast is lined with palm trees, trees and jungle, in the crowns of the trees you will come across howlers and parrots. The beach is sandy, gentle entry into the ocean, not very strong waves. Very quiet place, if you want to be alone, just walk a little along the beach and find a place without people. An unforgettable experience. Amazing place.
Stanislav F — Google review
Beautiful calm beach away from the crowds 🏝 the beach is very clean and pretty! The water is transparent but there are rocks in some areas. There was a lot of seaweed in April (I’m not sure whether it is a seasonal thing)
Valeria T — Google review
So far the most beautiful beach we’ve been to in Costa Rica. Good for swimming relaxing and taking really neat pictures. If you walk 10-15 minutes from the parking lot you’ll pretty much have your own private beach. Good for families with little ones. There are some pools that are calm due to coral calming the waves in certain parts which make it good for 4-8 year olds who might not prefer the waves. Our family with little boys enjoyed jumping waves as they came in lots of places where it’s 3ft deep for about 40ft from the edge of the beach.

Nestled about 10 kilometers from Puerto Viejo, Playa Negra is a captivating black sand beach that stands out for its unique charm rather than traditional beauty. This lesser-known gem offers an inviting atmosphere with a quaint village nearby, complete with cozy cafes and hotels. The soft, shiny black sand—believed to be volcanic—feels wonderful underfoot and adds to the beach's character.
My favourite beach! Not over crowded. More of a local vibe than tourist vibe like nearby beaches. The black, sparkling sand is said to be volcanic in nature and possess healing properties. Nice place to walk your dog.
Christina # — Google review
Interesting beach with black sand. Liked that there are pickick places to have some lunch or just chillout. Did not like the sand as you are all black after swimming. But worth stopping.
Ernestas K — Google review
Beautiful stretch of beach with black sand and pure Caribbean vibes. But be careful: some areas have strong currents – not ideal for inexperienced swimmers. There are spots with water rescue equipment available.
Florian S — Google review
The most special beach we've ever been to. Sparkling black sand, pleasant water, and plenty of comfortable areas to sit and relax, even with a car.
Gaya A — Google review
So far our favourite beach in Costa Rica. The black magnetic and very fine sand is amazing. Also great waves and not overrun.
Steff C — Google review
Easily one of the coolest beaches I've ever been to. I can't believe it's not more of tourist hotspot. There's not even a fee for parking! We just parked on the side of the road and walked up. The sand is not only totally black but also extremely soft and feels great on your feet. It's slightly metallic and shiny as well. I spent hours drawing things in it. It's more of a wading than swimming beach due to rip tides but absolutely worth a short walk or drive from Puerto Viejo.
Amanda B — Google review
One of my favorite beaches! The black sand is extremely soft and compared to the beaches close to this, it has no corals in the water so you can enter the sea with no problem. Also there are not many people.
Lisanna K — Google review
What a wonderful long unspoilt beach... it only has one small hotel and the rest is a natural shoreline.

One World is definitely a place worth experiencing. I say experiencing in favor of visiting quite intentionally. And, that's because it's truly an experience. Not only are the surroundings beautiful but you get to experience the true jungle. And Ken, the host, is full of knowledge. You can learn SO MUCH here. He is very gracious and welcomes you like family. You will feel right at home here and experience peace.

In the end of 2015 I went to Costa Rica and lived 6 months on the One World farm, working as a volunteer, in the beginning not even speaking a little bit of spanish. I loved it; the whole One World family, including Ken, his lovely family and Adolfo the worker, are just great people! Besides doing really important work in the project, helping to protect vulnerable rainforest territories in a remarkable way, you can spend time at the close village Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, which offers offers a ton of possibilities to entertain yourself, from surfing to partying! I never had such an interesting and amazing time in my life before, diving into a whole new world, learning about culture and nature, seeing things actually move forwards and learning a new language. A highly recommended Place for people that seek profound experience! Saludos y Pura Vida Mischa

This place is a absolute treasure, hidden away in the forest, the eco farm is full of wild life I think me and my girlfriend saw more wildlife just from our balcony than the whole of Manuel Antonio park ! ( for the record sloths, howler monkeys, skunks, praying mantis, and we even got taken to see their resident crocodile Alasandro on a forest tour) Make sure you ask about the Bribri culture and if there are spaces on the Bribri reserve tour where you meet local people and learn about Bribri religion and the deep connection to the local flora, and the chocolate ritual where you'll get to make your very own chocolate while looking over the very chocolate plants the beans came from !
