The Broken Hill City Art Gallery, housed in the historic Sully's Emporium building, offers an eclectic collection reflecting the town's unique character. The gallery showcases works by the controversial Brushmen of the Bush, including Pro Hart, as well as classical European pieces from George McCulloch's collection. With a strong focus on Indigenous art and featuring renowned artists like Arthur Boyd and Tim Storrier, it also hosts ongoing exhibits of Australian painters past and present.
We traveled to Broken Hill for the Pro Hart Outback Art Prize, in which I was a finalist. The staff and Gallery Director did a great job of hanging the show. It looked fantastic and the opening was a success. The Gallery is a beautiful space with a strong art collection you can view in the upstairs gallery. The staff are very helpful and welcoming, I do recommend popping in for a look.
Suzannah J — Google review
What a nice surprise of an art gallery. It had quite a few exhibits including the Bald Archy Prize portraits when we were there. We were able to spend quite some time viewing the art works since the gallery welcomed our dog also. The place is a credit to the Broken Hill township.
Cayte P — Google review
Really enjoyed our recent visit, a great introduction from the staff member on arrival and a really calming experience taking in several high-quality exhibits. The Sam Byrne exhibit was a highlight. The building is also impressive, a great space. Highly recommend.
Claire S — Google review
Broken Hill should be very proud of this beautiful gallery. Stunning building and beautifully presented works. I enjoyed visiting the pro hart art competition works.

Another gem in the west. Pro Hart prize was on exhibition along with the permanent exhibits. 100% recommended with great staff who are only too happy to help make your experience the best it can be.

Fantastic. Stunning art work. Some incredible historical pieces along with contemporary exhibitions. Absolutely worth visiting.

The Line of Lode Miners Memorial in Broken Hill is a significant site that offers a poignant tribute to the lives lost in the city's mining industry. The memorial, completed in 2001, stands as a towering monument and an open-air museum showcasing old mining machinery. It serves as a reminder of the harsh work conditions endured by local miners and honors over 800 individuals who perished while working in the mines.
Shout out to an amazing new Local Business in Broken Hill! 🙌 I believe they're still doing soft openings. We were fortunate to turn up while they were open. Beyond impressed with the food, service, staff, owners and the views are outstanding!! ♥️ Definitely go visit them! 🎉
Anne C — Google review
The miners memorial is terrific. The Cafe is now closed and has been for a coupla years apparently. Bugga. Worse thing. The flying Australian National Flag is a disgrace. It's a tattered rag. Shame on ewe mob.
Greg M — Google review
A great memorial to the very large number of miners who have died since mine started. Good to see that recent health and safety has nearly stopped the loss of life.
Brian F — Google review
The location is amazing, the way they have set this out is just brilliant. We reckon that they should put the information centre up here. The machines that the miners give you are understanding of what it was like. The miners memorial is so interesting, you learn so much, their age, how they pass away, the it happened. I fully recommend that you put this on your list.
Rick R — Google review
Such a sad but lovely memorial in honor of those who lost their lives. No tickets needed walk through but a bit disappointed that the information centre part was closed when we went.
Peaches D — Google review
This large memorial is in the open on top of a hill. It was very windy and cold the day we visited. Access the memorial along a raised board walk. Interesting seeing the multitude of names and causes of death and to realise the high risk toiners that persist today.
Julia L — Google review
A very moving place so it pays to take a little extra time to read some of the name plaques at the memorial. Great views of broken hill and excellent spot to watch sunset. A must do when in Broken Hill. Free to enter.

Sculpture
The Living Desert Sculptures, located in Broken Hill, are a collection of 12 unique sandstone sculptures created by artists from around the world during a 1993 art symposium. Despite initial challenges with the solid material, these sculptures have become an iconic attraction in the area. The site is situated within a predator-proof fenced flora and fauna sanctuary just 9 km from Broken Hill, offering visitors the chance to observe local wildlife and plants in their natural habitat.
I spent the morning doing all the walks and admiring all the wildflowers. That was just lovely. And only $10 solo park fee for the day. I was so glad I went back at sunset as the sculptures glowed with the light from the setting sun. I then understood the vision of the creative 1993 group who hauled the sandstone up the hill and unleashed their creativity. Make sure to arrive a bit before sunset.
Judy R — Google review
Not really worth the price of entry into the national park. $25, per family for a 15min visit. Not going to lie we didn't pay to enter as there was no one there to collect the money and they had a tap payment option, but it looked like there was a skimmer on it so we took the chance along with about 5 other cars and just drove in, the gates close at 6pm, we were there at around 3.30pm, perhaps it would have been better to see at sunset. The sculptures are very weathered and are missing details being sculptured out of sandstone, without any protective finishing. 23 years of weather has made details hard to make out.
Amanda M — Google review
🗿 The Living Desert Sculptures are tucked inside a reserve roughly 6km from Broken Hill, with a $25 entry fee. While the sculptures—created by a handful of artists—aren’t particularly historic or extensive, the setting does offer some scenic views. That said, the overall experience feels a bit underwhelming for the effort and cost. More of a “nice detour” than a must-see destination A B.
Meth H — Google review
A must see location. Two options to see the sculptures….you can drive to the top of the hill where the rock art is located or as we did take the time to walk from the picnic base area meandering up through the amazing colourful natural landscape. Expect to see amazing views towards Mundi Mundi and also Broken Hill and surrounding areas, and of course absolutely stunning rock sculptures positioned throughout a hilltop walking circuit.
Mark D — Google review
One of the major tourist attractions in Broken Hill. This place consists of several sculptures carved from rock, each telling a different story. The view is outstanding. The best time to visit will be around sunset. There is an automatic ticket counter at the entry of the park, and apparently there is a camping site nearby which is quite popular for astrophotography. A must visit
Debaditya A — Google review
Fantastic location. Sculptures were average. The electronic payment system is random. Didn't always work.
Steve — Google review
Amazing! Beautiful view of the surrounding area. Wildlife around. And the sculptures were very cool! Worth the drive!

Living Desert Sculptures – A Place of Magic and Wonder Visiting the Living Desert Sculptures near Broken Hill is like stepping into another realm. This unique outdoor gallery, set against the breathtaking outback landscape, is pure magic – especially at sunrise or sunset, when the light dances across the stone and sky. Each sculpture tells a powerful story, blending human creativity with the timeless beauty of the desert. The walking paths are thoughtfully designed, with helpful plaques and stunning views at every turn. It’s a peaceful, inspiring place that invites quiet reflection and awe. And if you look closely between the ancient rocks, you might just spot the newest guardian of this sacred place – a magical dragon said to have made its home among the stones. Whether legend or truth, there's no doubt this land holds deep energy and mystery #suchawonderfpowerfuldragon Easy access, disability-friendly, and just a short drive from Broken Hill (watch out for kangaroos!), the Living Desert Sculptures are a must-see for travelers, dreamers, and lovers of art and nature. — Alex from Perth

The Pro Hart Gallery in Broken Hill, an old mining town, pays homage to the renowned artist who became a leading figure in Outback painting. Pro Hart's artistic vision was shaped by his experiences working on a sheep farm and in the mines, which inspired his narrative art depicting outback life. The gallery showcases many of his iconic works, including scenes of shearing, station hands, miners, and dragonflies.
Review: Pro Hart – A True Aussie Treasure What an absolutely talented man Pro Hart was. His work is nothing short of extraordinary — rich in colour, energy, and storytelling. Each painting captures the essence of Australian life with a unique mix of humour, emotion, and striking detail. From his iconic outback scenes to his experimental pieces using unconventional materials, Pro Hart’s creativity knew no bounds. He didn’t just paint; he brought stories to life on canvas, making art that’s both relatable and deeply moving. Visiting his gallery or viewing his work is a reminder of how one man’s passion and perspective can capture the spirit of a nation. A true Aussie legend and a rare talent whose legacy continues to inspire.

Brilliant. When enter the Pro Hart gallery you are meet with the friendly staff that will help you with any of your inquiry. The gallery is 3 level high, with the 1st level (the ground floor) full of so much information and so many amazing things to buy and you get to see Pro Hart work spot and watch are very interesting video 📹 of him. The next 2 level have his paintings 🖼 and again this was our first time and it was fantastic.
Rick R — Google review
So happy we experienced all his talents and history of Pro Hart on Mon 1 sept Only $5/ head entry. Really well set up and sooo much to look at and enjoy. The lady that was working was warm and friendly. Worth going. 😊thank you!

OMG always admired the talent of this amazing person and to visit his gallery was a joy. More than I expected. Don't miss out on his sculptures across the road
Linda W — Google review
A visit to Broken Hill would not be complete without going to the Pro Hart Gallery. And it was an easy 30 minute walk from town. Don’t miss the sculpture park across the Road, it’s so peaceful and all worth the visit. I also took a detour to Julie Harts Gallery on the way back.
Catherine S — Google review
It was an honour to finally be able to visit his home and gallery. $5 adults, $3 seniors and pensioners, children free. So good! Don't forget to go across the road and see his sculptures. That is free!
Patricia T — Google review
Fantastically presented gallery/ museum. Brilliant art of course, but nothing pretentious. Lots to look at and take in over the 3 levels. Friendly, helpful and engaging staff.
Monique S — Google review
My favourite activity in Broken Hill. The Pro Hart Art Gallery is just out of town, plenty of street parking and only $5 for adults and $3 for kids / seniors to get in. Was wonderful seeing Pro Hart's old house and art studio (which is left in original condition). It is interesting to see his earlier works which were quite conservative and quintessentially captured Australian scenes like at the beach and the cricket. His later abstract works are what most people are familiar with - including the iconic carpet ads from the late 80s / early 90s. There are multiple levels of artworks here and you could spend a solid hour here or longer if you watch the documentary on loop. When the entry is so cheap I always like to support the gift shop so picked up some cool tea towels for home. The staff are really knowledgeable and friendly. There is an outdoor sculpture garden across the road. Several of Pro Hart's sculptures can be seen downtown as well as large painted artworks at Broken Hill Regional Airport inside the departures terminal.

Bell's Milk Bar, Australia's oldest milk bar, is a beloved icon of Broken Hill culture. Originally a small candy store in 1892, it retains its charming 1950s American-style diner atmosphere. With over 50 traditional milkshake and soda spider flavors, as well as an array of delectable desserts, it's a paradise for those with a sweet tooth. Families will appreciate the kid-friendly menu and nostalgic decor.
An Absolute Gem in Broken Hill! What a nostalgic and fun place — I absolutely loved it here! As someone who appreciates a good old-fashioned milkshake, this spot hit all the right notes. I had the banana shake and a classic hotdog, and both were spot-on. The shake was thick, flavourful, and exactly how it should be — they really know what they’re doing. The vibe is like stepping straight into the 50s or 60s, complete with a fantastic little museum tucked away in the back. It’s such a cool experience for families, couples, or anyone just chasing a sweet moment of retro joy. The staff were super friendly, welcoming, and genuinely seemed to enjoy being there — which makes all the difference. I even saw them give a little ice cream treat to a customer’s dog, which was such a sweet touch! Would love to see a milkshake sampler tray added to the menu — there are so many flavours I want to try. But either way, I’ll be back for more. Don’t miss this spot when you’re in Broken Hill. It’s an experience. — Alex from Perth
Alexander Z — Google review
Friendly service and I was surprised there's a museum at the back. I hope they advertise that a little bit more. It was very interesting. The ice cream I had was delicious full of peanut butter.. but very icy. I think probably there was a bit of misstep in its preparation. My friends enjoyed their milkshakes and their homemade flavours, though I still feel it was.. just artificial style flavours. Interesting disco Dinner vibe.
Anthony G — Google review
It's a retro milkbar. Good milkshakes. No thick shakes on Sunday? Great hot chips. The museum is free and worth a wander through as you go to the dunny (toilet).
Greg M — Google review
We arrived shortly before closing, but were happily seated in the booth section. We both loved the 50's vibe. Staff was dressed in old school outfit which gave us a 'Back to the future' feel. We'll definately return!
Gesine K — Google review
A 50s style milk bar with milkshakes, spiders, waffles and burger-type food. It doesnt appear that the decor has changed much since the actual 50s, so it feels a bit grimy. However, the waffles were fresh and tasty, and the flat white was good but not great. But by far the biggest downer is the lack of relevancy in some of the wall art - images that should have been removed long before now (see pix).
Matthew T — Google review
Wow, great place, amazingly you walk in and take a step back in time. We had amazing food. I had the waffles with banana, 10/10.
Nicole A — Google review
A must do if in this town. Great flashback to the 50s worth the decor, milkshakes amd the customer service

Mundi Mundi Lookout is a picturesque hill that offers sweeping views of the expansive desert plains and the Silverton Wind Farm. Located just a 5-minute drive from Silverton, it's a popular spot for capturing stunning outback sunsets and witnessing dust storms or thunderstorms rolling in. The lookout is also known for being the backdrop for the Mad Max movies and hosts an annual 3-day festival called the Mundi Mundi bash every April, featuring live music concerts and local food.
Spectacular. Spectacular. Spectacular. Do not miss. Be very careful of kangaroos. We got food from the Silverton hotel took chairs and a table and arrived 30 mins prior to sunset. Great access for all. Be mindful of the road with children about. Fabulous disability access, easy parking. Unbelievably beautiful.
Vanessa K — Google review
A very popular tourist site if you are visiting Broken Hill. The panoramic view is just amazing, a combination of hills and valleys. Apparently, some scenes of Mad Max 2 were shot near this site. This place is a couple of kilometres from Silverton. Bear in mind that the road is very bumpy, and you need to look out for the sudden changes in the road profile. Further some places looked like they were in the way of floodwaters, and can contain some debris if there is a recent flooding. Despite the hardships, it's a must visit, you won't be disappointed.
Debaditya A — Google review
A beautiful spot to see the whole open quiet scenery on a Monday arvo. Lovely spot to have noonies take in the sunset which we were too early..

The Silver City Mint & Art Centre is a vibrant venue that showcases a diverse range of art, including paintings, sculptures, and jewelry. One of its main attractions is the Big Picture, an enormous 100-meter-long acrylic painting depicting the outback landscape. Created by a single artist, it's considered to be the largest of its kind in the world. In addition to art, visitors can also explore locally made chocolates and unique silver jewelry at this renowned art centre on Chloride Street.
What a great experience. Lots of jewellery and art through this unique set up. Watched a short video to start with. Then meandered through to the cave like experience where you come out on to a walkway and beholds a magnificent art of work that is 100m long and 12m high. In this natural looking setting the artist has captured the true essence of the outback. Magnificent. It the other end settled in to the video of The Big Red, well worth a viewing. More art and jewellery on the way out plus chocolate.

Interesting stop to view some local silver jewellery, gemstones, artworks & knick knacks. The $20 family entry fee is worth it to check out The Big Picture & other displays
David G — Google review
Well worth the small fee $7. Amazing painting - geographically fairly accurate. Well assembled.
Jenni G — Google review
I can't say how much I appreciate the staff here. They did an amazing job cleaning up and adding a pendent to my chain. The place was amazing to explore and the largest painting was like finding new little things. Its a must see in Broken Hill.
Paul H — Google review
There’s some lovely jewellery in the shop lobby but $8.50 to visit the rest of the shop is pretty ludicrous. The giant painting is impressively large but twee - lots of disproportionate flora and fauna and stuffed toys. And don’t get me started on the fake aboriginal cave 🥴 If you really feel you must go, get the discount coupon from the info centre first - $6 will feel less ripped off.
Anne M — Google review
It is interesting looking at the pure size of the painting but otherwise it's a bit touristy. The building itself uses space quite well and the cave like room with different types of stone and the room in which they make stuff was pretty neat.
David B — Google review
A very special place to see history of silver minting. Plenty of silver jewellery, art pieces, chocolates and brikabrak to buy. The magnificent painting is just breathtaking! A must see to say the least. Entry is very Conservative.

Well, the lady that was there was a bit rude. Never look at you when talking to you. Keep doing her work. Like a robot .it needs a bit of love in there . But the big picture was nice to look at. Need to lots $$$ if you want to buy anything in there .

The Mad Max 2 Museum, located around 20 minutes from Broken Hill in the town of Silverton, is a must-visit for movie enthusiasts. This privately owned museum showcases an extensive collection of costumes, photos, memorabilia, and original vehicles from the post-apocalyptic film series. The owner, a dedicated fan who relocated from the UK to run the museum, has assembled an impressive array of items related to Mad Max 2.
Unreal Experience – A Must for Mad Max Fans If you're heading to Silverton, the Mad Max Museum is an absolute must. Whether you're a die-hard fan or just curious about Aussie film history, this place delivers. The collection is huge – original costumes, vehicles, props, and rare behind-the-scenes photos. You can feel the passion and dedication that went into creating this space. Adrian and Linda, the owners, are legends. Their love for Mad Max and Silverton is infectious. Adrian knows everything about the films and shares stories that make you feel like you’re part of the production crew. Linda is super warm and welcoming – it feels like visiting old friends. There are areas where photography isn’t allowed, but you’ll still get epic shots outside with some of the original vehicles, including pieces from Razorback and of course Mad Max 2. Just a heads up – check the opening hours before you come out, as it can be a bit unpredictable. After the museum, pop into the local bakery – seriously, amazing food. Silverton surprised me in the best way – it’s a little town packed with big stories. — Alex from Perth

A lot of work has been put into replicating props/vehicles that have been destroyed or are in museums overseas. Some original pieces are on display. A great display of photos from filming and other sources. Glad we made the effort to go.

The Albert Kersten Mining and Minerals Museum, also known as GeoCentre, is a captivating destination in Broken Hill. Despite its smaller size, the museum offers a comprehensive display of minerals from the region and delves into the geological history and mining industry of Broken Hill. One of its notable attractions is a 42-kilo silver nugget. The museum's location in downtown Broken Hill makes it easily accessible for both locals and tourists.
For something I’m not into .. it was amazing!!! Lots of information.. lots of minerals The history of Broken Hill Mine explained well Throughly enjoyed Would recommend a visit!!
Leanne U — Google review
The museum is well worth a visit The history of the city is bound up in mining and mineral resources There is a great collection of mineral samples and many historical documents and photographs Highly recommended
Graeme F — Google review
Fantastic hour I spent going through here, and that was rushing things. Lots of info and mineral samples which I love, and the video while slightly dated, has a great explanation on how the ore body formed.
Malcolm S — Google review
Interesting place, informative staff, loved learning about the minerals and rocks discovered and mined around our local. A microscope so you can look at them in detail. A little gift shop aswell to purchase some very reasonable priced rocks to take home. Donation as the entry fee. I love crystals 😉 Just a couple of photos I thought I'd share.
Gabriella S — Google review
Well worth the entry fee. It doesn’t look like much from the outside, but once you step in the door you realise you’ve found a gem (pun intended). Not so suitable for very small children but anyone aged 10+ should enjoy themselves. You don’t need to have an interest in minerals/mining, it’s interesting regardless. Allow about 45 minutes for a full walkthrough. There’s some gems and such available in the gift shop.
Holly R — Google review
A great museum for anyone interested in minerals and ores. So well displayed.
Jenni G — Google review
Anyone visiting Broken Hill should consider this a must see. Such an unexpected pleasure to find such a comprehensive explanation and display of the history and fabulous mineral wealth of Broken Hill. Do not miss the 11 minutes documentary.

The Geo centre as it's locally known covers the different minerals and genealogical finds that are apart of the Line of Lode. There are some great audio visual presentations, many mineral displays and lots of read. It's a must visit for those who love geology and enjoy gemstones and mineral collections.

Kinchega National Park, located just over 100 kilometers southeast of Broken Hill, is a serene outback park surrounding the stunning Menindee Lakes. This historically significant land offers visitors the chance to explore nature and indigenous history through guided hikes and well-marked driving trails. The park is known for its river red gums, diverse birdlife, and picturesque sunset and sunrise views over the lakes.
Some fantastic places to visit, but check out the Information Building to see how it all works. Driving after dark is challenging, with lots of animals grazing on and around the roads.

Darling River camp grounds is where i stayed, camp-site 9. I found it in the dark, and I was happy with my choice. Past weird 32 is a little bit less water, but still the entire 23km river road camp grounds are a great place to camp. I was solo and enjoyed the serenity of bird calls and fish jumping but a family and friends camp would be just as good. The distance between sites varies busy mostly they are distances of around 1km. A few long drops on the way.

One of our favourite National Parks! Lovely camping spots along the Darling River Campground. Great fishing and fantastic bird watching. Modern and clean amenities - showers at the Visitors Centre, BBQs and toilets at Emu Lake Campground. Don’t miss a self-guided tour of the Woolshed
BoneoMalone — Google review
Today we visited the Woolshed, Homestead ruins, and drove the loop back through River Drive. What a great place to camp!! The road was in good condition and the river drive has heaps of fabulous campsites on bends in the river. Many of them would be plenty big enough for a van and decent tow vehicle. I’m kind of disappointed we camped on the lake now that I e seen these campsites!! Woolshed was very interesting and the restorations are well done. The Homestead is a ruin. But the walk is interesting and should spark the imagination thinking about how tough life was on these places. The road was fine for the entire loop. It’s not bitumen, it’s dirt road into a National Park not a highway. But I’d happily take our van in there. Campsite near the Woolshed was unappealing to me at this time of the year, so you might want to check that. But if the road is open, we will camp on the River Drive next visit.
Annette R — Google review
Spent a day here .My favourite was The Billabong walk and the Woolshed. It was wonderful to see all the birdlife this park offers. Lots of lizards too which seem to enjoy sunning themselves on the side of the road . Bring all your food and water for your stay and something for all the flies .It was $8 for a day pass .There are envelopes at the entrance for you to put your money in.
Sally M — Google review
We stayed a night at the Shearers Quarters at Kinchega National Park. It's just basic bunk accommodation, but great value at $50. It was clean, had heating/ aircon, and access to a large kitchen/mess area. The old shearing shed is nearby, and kangaroos and emus are plentiful.
Michael M — Google review
Fun drive around the lake edge. The woolshed was a good stop. Watch out for Emu, Skippy and Shingle backs. Confirm roads are open on your chosen route. Camping on the Darling looks a great option.
David H — Google review
A fabulous National Park with interesting places to visit and extremely scenic. We went to the woolshed site and loved exploring it. You can still smell the lanolin which amazed us. We also visited the site of the old homestead. There's not much of it left but it was interesting to wonder around. The drive along the river was pretty with lots of places for picnics.

This was such a delight. Run by local volunteers who clearly love what the do. So informative. Thought we might be 30 minutes, 2 hours later we had to leave to search for food. Highly recommended for all ages. Great to be able to actually enter the train collection 😀 Definitely go through the Migrant Museum - so informative.

Outstanding. So much interesting history, beautifully presented. History is far broader than simply trains. Also includes nursing, mining and rocks, social history of Broken Hill including the Queen's visit. Just amazing. Would recommend allowing 2 hours if possible.
Kathryn H — Google review
Amazing place. Full of so many interesting things from the past - not just rail history, but Migrants, hospital, Vivienne Bulwinkle and lots of other interesting things.
Mary M — Google review
What a great place to visit and spend an hour, very well presented and informative volunteers. I particularly enjoyed being able to climb aboard the engines and walk through carriages, really getting a feel for the times. My favourite being the 1937 Silver City Comet, acquired in 1990. Most trains on Australian lines were built in Manchester, England. What a journey to get to Broken Hill. There’s plenty to see of general life through the times that will entertain all.
Paul S — Google review
A real gem. This place has a few old carriages, and a lot of information about them. Usually not that busy, and takes around 20 mins to go through the place. The centre of the town and many other attractions are very close. This place does close soon, so maybe start your day with this, and move to the other spots.

Outback Astronomy in Broken Hill offers a unique stargazing experience guided by the passionate owners, Linda and Travis. From their humble beginnings as self-taught astronomers to winning a tourism award, they now provide an unforgettable journey through the Milky Way galaxy using high-powered telescopes and laser beams. Located away from city lights, this tour allows visitors to witness shooting stars, satellites, and the iconic Milky Way up close.
Absolutely incredible! We had the perfect experience at Outback Astronomy! From arrival we were welcomed at the door with complimentary hot chocolates (Easter special). Shown to our recliner seats and set up with our audio headsets and binoculars. The sky show started and our guide had sooo much knowledge about the stars and out of space/ constellations etc. she used her laser to guide us where to look. It was magnificent and brought me to tears a couple times! We had the chance to get up and see different nebulas/ stars/ moon via their telescopes. We did take our 6&7 year olds which by half way through fell asleep😂 Not because they were bored but because how warm of a night we had and how comfortable the chairs were! It’s a beautiful atmosphere with everyone eager to see and learn about the stars/ out of space! Will definitely do this again when we visit next! Thank you for a lovely night!
Phoebe C — Google review
Such a lot of fascinating facts about the night sky. A very well set up big telescope for a direct view and only a small group to share it with. Saturn was so sharply visible. Also a digitised view direct to a TV screen. Amazing. Great explanations and a clear passion for all things astronomical. Highly recommend. But wrap up warm!

We had a great experience last week with a Moon night at Outback Astronomy. Instructions were clear on how to get there and get the best out of the evening. Linda has an excellent oratory style and is clearly passionate about Space. Travis did a cracking job on getting the telescopes set up and it was fantastic to see nebulas and the Moon on the TV screen casting what the telescope was seeing. Don’t miss this if you are in town.

If you're in Broken Hill and it's a clear night, go and do this. Amazing close up views of planets and stars, informative and entertaining. What we learnt stuck with us for the rest of our outback trip.

Amazing experience and education of our beautiful celestial night sky. We were blown away by the in depth commentary and technology used (high-tech telescope) and the story arc from ancient astrology to modern day astronomy. We learnt so much about the starry starry night. Would be of interest for novice to advanced star gazers. Thanks so much Linda and Travis! Highly recommend if you are visiting Broken Hill.

Living Desert State Park, located just 12 kilometers north of Broken Hill city center, is a 180-hectare sanctuary showcasing the stunning natural beauty of outback Australia. The park features twelve impressive sandstone sculptures and a diverse display of local flora including unique wildflowers. Visitors can explore various walking tracks to immerse themselves in the park's rich fauna and flora.
A must do attraction at Broken Hill. Living Desert State Park is stunning at sunset. Entry is $10 per person (not based per vehicle). There are many walking trails to take advantage of here with wildflower gardens before driving up to the carpark near the sculptures walk. Time it just on sunset for the best photos at to get the iconic sun setting through the hole sculpture shot. Lots of people quietly enjoying the sunset, seeing the solar powered windmills in the distance and cracking open a tinnie! So ironically Australian. Left soon after the sun dipped as I was nervous about the roads leading out which were soon becoming pitch black with the risk of wildlife on the roads. Take it slow and stay vigilant.
Timeshare C — Google review
Nicely set out. The Sculptures are good for the purpose of visual ascetics and well positioned on the top of the hill that is accessible by car. There is a well laid out walking track (grade 2) to the lower fauna and aboriginal exhibits... it also has bbqs and picnik area. This is a return track to get back to your car from the top Sculptures. The alternative is to drive to the Fauna and Aboriginal exhibits and treck up to the Sculptures. Sunset time is amazing at the Top Sculptures Site. Stop and pay your entry fee at the automated teller booth.
Richard C — Google review
Amazing at sunset. Quite a spiritual experience amongst the sculptures and looking out across the vast landscape. Well worth the drive out.
Jenni G — Google review
Love it up here celebrating the sunset. All of the sculptures take on different colours throughout the sunset. Beautiful place.
Mary-Anne V — Google review
The locality is brilliant, the sunset is beautiful but those sculptures, apart from a couple of exceptions, are quite rubbish. The in situ geology is far more interesting.
David M — Google review
A great walk, including a loop through the flora section. So much to see, you do need to set aside a couple of hours to fully immerse yourself in the cultural aspects as well flora, rock formations etc. There are toikets, rest stops & a water drinking station.
Wendy D — Google review
Great out of the way place. You would need a 4 wheel vehicle if it rains ( which doesn’t happen often) 😂
Alison G — Google review
The sculptures are really awesome. The drive out is a bit long and the road is very narrow and quite steep towards the car park. The sunset is out of this world. However, be aware that when you leave there will be lots of wildlife on the side of the road and on the road, especially kangaroos - so be very careful and be hyper vigilant when leaving around/after sunset.

Take the guided tour of the hanger with the knowledgable staff. There is a history of the RFDS from small beginings, to Queen Elizabeth 2nd bestowing the royal title. Souveneir shop with clothing, drink bottles, and much more. Proceeds going to the RFDS.
Stuart D — Google review
We've been to a few RFDS places but this was the best. A great museum section and a wonderful look at aircraft in the hangar, all brought together by a really good couple of guides. Top stuff, and we learnt so much more about RFDS operations
Colin S — Google review
Great 'experience' well worth a visit if you are in Broken Hill. Wonderful insight in to the history (and present) of the RFDS - what a fantastic organization and the history of Reverend Flynn and his mission to set up the service is inspiring. Interesting collection of planes etc from the history of RFDS as well as a nice Broken Hill history lesson. First part of the tour is 'guided' which was OK but probably unnecessary ... the place speaks for itself! Entry fee applies - but the $60 for a family is well worth it - even if it is just a forced donation!
Andrew N — Google review
Our visit to the Flying Doctor Heritage Centre in Mildura was excellent. Our tour guide gave us an interesting and at times funny history of the RFDS, and this was accompanied with 2 movie presentations as well as aeroplanes on-site. The recording of an outback wife to RFDS in the early years seeking help for her injured husband was both interesting to listen too, but also quite heartfelt. Well done. An excellent display.

Lots of very useful local knowledge provided upon request at the Visitor Centre. An interesting town with so much to do and see. We loved our four busy days exploring BH and Silverton and local attractions. So much creative talent evidenced in the many art galleries. A Caution: We also joined the 10:00 heritage walk but found it very slow and repetitive taking just on 3 hours when it could EASILY be completed in half this time. We appreciate that these tours are run by volunteers with a wealth of knowledge and stories to tell but these could be shared between locations and kept relevant. With temps rising into the 30s less is more!

Visitors can't miss the Mundi Mundi Lookout with its expansive desert views or exploring the Day Dream Mine.
Love the mozzarella sticks & Nachos. $18 Irish Coffee (Coffee w/- a nip of Bailey's & Jameson Whisky). Merch is expensive. Service awesome. With 3 Coaches a day visiting Silverton, eat at 11:30am.

Great place to have a cool drink and food. They also sell souvenirs & t-shirts. All day menu is great so you can eat at any time after the bakery is closed.

Great people and our burgers were so good. The egg was perfectly done, chips were good, but we were stalked by birds! Definitely don't feed them! Lol, literally it started with one, and before you know it we were surrounded - and we DIDN'T feed them. Good food, decent prices, and a talking cockatoo at the back near the toilets. Adorable. We aren't into Mad Max, but the other memorabilia around is cool. Worth the stop.

This place is certainly about the vibe. The service can be a little bit short as in a bit rough but it seems okay. I definitely want to come back here and check out all the decoration. History and memorabilia of all the famous people, TV shows and movies that have used this hotel. I think the food is okay but we only got chips this time.
Anthony G — Google review
We ordered seafood basket and grilled fish and vegies. Umph, grilled fish, hot chips good but vegies and seafood basket heated food. Our wines were $8 a glass which was good. Best thing was being out there at sunset as the flies went to bed, the camel ride came into town and the donkeys grazed down the road. The hotel was very dog friendly but not busy.
Robbie F — Google review
It was a pleasure to be welcomed by 4 Donkeys when we walked over to the pub for dinner, the ‘inside’ staff were very welcoming, the beer was cold and the food was a simple menu but well cooked and timely.
Jamie H — Google review
Quite the worst pub food I have ever been served. Bangers and mash, hard to stuff up but they did. In a sentence, set a low standard and failed to achieve it. Cheap thin sausages that appeared to have been tortured in a sandwich press. Gravy that was congealed like resin. This place runs on a memory, thats all it will be to me now. Over priced and over rated. A diehard mad max fan may find the sights of of interest, otherwise save your money, time and suspension.

Nestled in the heart of the Australian outback, Broken Hill Distillery is a hidden gem that has quickly made a name for itself since its inception in February 2021. This charming distillery, run by brothers Eric and Paul Hanna, has already garnered accolades at the World Gin Awards for their exceptional gunpowder gin.
Gin with attitude! Gorgeous small distillery behind the pub with a wonderful beer garden out the back. The first thing I noticed in the distillery was the smell of the botanicals. Absolutely intoxicating! Great tasting paddle options with local ingredients taking National Awards to enjoy in the garden outside.

Yuuuum. Fabulous tasting flights. 6 different gins all very good. I had 3 and my wife had 3 and we each tried a sip.

I was recently gifted the far west gin - and MY GOD! I love my gin, and this hit all the right spots of what a classic gin tastes like. It was strong and refreshing, and adding garnishes was fun as I could switch it up depending on what I felt like on the day - and it tasted delicious in every way. Who would have thought such a class distillery is all the way out west - what a treat. I cannot wait to visit and equally cannot wait to try your other gins! Thanks legends!

Great Gin Tasting experience. Award winning Gins! Booked in and fee came off our purchases. Various Gins were so good it was hard to make a decision so we bought one of each!!

Great place, great food, very friendly staff and a beautiful pub. The tour was very well done. .... thank you Paul for your knowledge and friendly banter. While not a gin drinker, I was amazed at the various flavours you are infusing into your award winning gins. Well worth the money and a "must do" while in Broken Hill.

You must try this if you love gin, I recently tried a bottle of Broken Hill Distillery 6:45 Gin. Had it with 3 or 4 different mixers including, tonic, bitter lemon, on ice over fresh squeezed mandarin juice and same with lime juice. My favourite was the mandarin but all were sensational. This stuff also packs a wallop so you don’t have to use so much to really get the taste of this great Aussie product. Pete South east qld.

The Historic Daydream Mine in Broken Hill offers a glimpse into the underground life of miners from the 1880s. This well-preserved silver mine provides guided underground tours, allowing visitors to explore tunnels and voids while learning about the challenging working conditions of early mining days. Located around 20km north of Broken Hill, it's a must-visit attraction when in the area.
Best hands-on and real-life underground mine tour I've been on. Our tour guide today was Tyson. A great young bloke who knew the history of the area well. This non-working mine is about a 20-minute drive out of Broken Hill on the way to Silverton. The underground tour is not for anyone who doesn't feel comfortable in close spaces of which I'm one. However, I went down with some trepidation, and I was ok. It is a little tight in a couple of spots and you do need to be sure footed as well, but there are railings to hold onto and its only a few minutes before you can stand fully upright again. It might not be suitable for people with larger frames and who are over 175cm tall as these mines were originally created by our Cornish forefathers, and they were quite small in stature. We arrived not as part of a tour group, but we were able to purchase our entry tickets and enjoy delicious freshly made 'Cornish' scones, with jam ad cream and a nice cup of tea. It's a top spot to visit and well worth including in your itinerary. Also, it's best to call ahead and book in. We didn't, but we were given a private tour on this occasion. If you buy your tickets in advance, you'll save a few $$$'s.
Jennifer R — Google review
Getting to see & experience this historic mine (in operation from 1880s) was very enlightening. Whole new appreciation for how hard a miners life was. The underground tour can be tight in some places and not everyone on our tour coped well with that, so just bare that in mind if you are claustrophobic or have a large frame. Scones at the end were lovely. If you have the time when out Broken Hill way I recommend popping in for a visit.
Ashleigh A — Google review
The area seems pretty looked after, they try their best. Very friendly people and full of tourists. The road to get there can be very rough though. I just hope next time that I can understand the tour guide better, his accent was abit mumbled. It is full of information and memorabilia. When there was a big crowd and the buses of people coming in, it was a little bit confusing. Who was going with which group. There is very little mobile reception so best to bring cash as the payment systems for card can fail.
Anthony G — Google review
Brilliant experience! The boys doing the tour work were friendly and entertaining. The lady in the kitchen made the most amazing scones and the quandong jam was delicious! Easy to get too, plenty of parking. Really peaceful place. Definitely worth the trip out☺️
Bec B — Google review
Really enjoyed the mine tour experience. Very real and certainly not "modified" for unfit tourists. On the negative - the grumpy old man at reception needs to let up on his lecturing for cash payments. For improvement - our guide Angus was very knowledgeable with a good sense of humor, however, his mono tonal and rapid speech made it difficult to understand him all the time and would have been impossible to understand for many O/S tourists.
Francesco L — Google review
Terrific insight into the mining realities of late 19th Century. The life beyond tough, makes today’s workplaces seem like an absolute picnic! The guide really told it how it was, which was fascinating and horrifying. Highly recommended tour. Scones afterwords delicious. NB: Apple Maps sent us to the wrong spot, so I’ve reported the issue
Stephen G — Google review
An eye opening tour about Australian historic mining. The guide was very knowledgeable and was great. I highly recommend the underground mining tour, but you do need to be about to walk down/up stairs and hunched over in the areas only 1.2m high. Enclosed shoes are a must. Our 8yr old loved every second of the tour. It's very authentic. Try the scones and tea afterwards or beforehand, yum. The staff here are helpful, friendly, and knowledgeable.
Michelle P — Google review
Now this is worth visiting.... the way miners operated in early times.... my hats off to them....hard work in trying conditions. Gives you a perspective of times gone bye. Excellent home cooked scones at the end.

The Silverton Gaol and Historical Museum is a captivating destination that offers a glimpse into the town's vibrant mining past. Housed in a former prison, the museum showcases an array of exhibits that depict Silverton's early mining years. With artifacts spread across 18 rooms and cells, visitors can explore the region's history, including its transition to Broken Hill. Additionally, nearby attractions such as the Mad Max 2 Museum provide an alternative perspective on the area's recent heritage.
WOW was I mistaken, I would be in and out of this small museum in the matter of a few minutes, so so wrong. This is a huge museum covering the whole of the history of the town of Silverton, from the beginning of the mining, and showing all aspects of the whole town over the years. While we had limited time and rushed through in only a couple of hours, you could spend almost all day here. Please do not judge this book by it's cover, or its name!
Val R — Google review
Another great museum in Silverton, the Silverton Goal is a beautiful old building and had a very extensive collection of historical artefacts from the area. I had a wonderful chat with the caretaker who told me about some locations in the area where Mad Max 2 was filmed and that he and his wife were involved in the film, too.
Daniel C — Google review
Wasn't expecting such a huge amount of information and history when I walked in. Friendly and helpful staff. Allow some extra time for this sppt. A massive amount of town history on one place.

I spent a good hour here today fully entertained and only left as I had the dog with me. There’s plenty to see, more than expected that’s for sure. 18 rooms of history both from the Gaol itself it also collections from the whole area. You can certainly get a feel of life in the ‘old times’ of Silverton and of the many mining exploits throughout the region. Everyone would find something of interest whether that’s family life or mining. Got to be worth a visit.

The Broken Hill Mining Museum & Whites Mineral Art Gallery is a must-see attraction for those interested in the historical heritage of Broken Hill. Hosted by a former miner, visitors can expect to hear real first-hand stories from the days of working underground. The museum showcases the development of mining since the 1800s through dioramas and mine displays, while also featuring unique artwork created from locally crushed rock. The collection offers a one-of-a-kind glimpse into the city's history and art.
You really can’t miss this spectacular attraction in Broken Hill. It truly is incredible. Home to THE LARGEST collection of mineral art, and some of the kindest most hospitable folks on the planet, I had the most amazing time here. There is also an immaculate collection of dolls- truly something for everyone at this museum!

If you only do one thing in Broken Hill this is it. We went just before a bus tour and Larry said we would be better coming back so he opened up for just us the next day for our tour. He is so informative and we went away with a great understanding of mining and how Broken Hill has contributed to Australia. If the council don't take on this museum it will eventually be lost forever

Larry's guided tour was informative and quite informal. Larry obviously has first hand knowledge of the mining and presents it in an interesting way. The exhibits, mineral art is impressive... the tour is in a shed but you feel like you are in an underground mine. It's all very well done and presented. Perched atop the Line of Lode, The Big Bench is a notable attraction in Australia, offering panoramic views of Broken Hill. While it was once a popular spot for visitors to sit and capture Instagram-worthy photos, it is now fenced off. Despite this restriction, the location still provides stunning vistas of the area's mining machinery and the town itself. Adjacent to the Line of Lode Miners Memorial, this site offers a poignant reminder of the region's mining history.
Great place to visit. Very good view overlooking the town. Great to see the Big Bench.
Christine B — Google review
This is a poorly design monument. There’s no sign or details around the chair. You can’t climb on the kids and your family can’t sit on it. If it was meant to be looking over the city it’s useless. Just sit with a chain around it and can’t be used what a waste of time.
Ozzie O — Google review
Calling it a “chair” might be a stretch—it’s practically a bench. It’s got the size, sure, but not a whole lot of wow factor. If you’re after a jaw-dropping experience, this probably isn’t it. More “that’s neat” than “that’s epic.” 😄
Meth H — Google review
We came here as we are seeing the ‘Big things in Australia”. It is chained off, however everyone bypasses this to climb up and take a photo. There is also a mine to look at with machinery and a memorial wall. It was really windy. A nice view of the town of Broken Hill. There are toilets and a cafe, however both were closed the day we went. We were told that you could walk here from the visitors centre. Yes, you could walk here but I would not advise it. You can walk to the bottom of the hill, but it would be unsafe to walk up the hill, you would be literally walking on the road. We drove, if we didn’t have a car, I would not have attempted it. It is FREE!
Kerrie R — Google review
The Big Bench is certainly red and from this location provides a commanding view over the town. The seat looks like it needs some TLC and is fenced off to prevent climbing
Paul S — Google review
I was quite literally blown away. The Big Bench sits at the top of a hill and provides awesome views of Broken Hill, but boy was it WINDY! The miners memorial was interesting and it should be even better when the new visitor’s Center is completed. The only disappointment was that the bench is fenced off and you can no longer sit on it to get photos.
Darren F — Google review
It’s a seat, it’s big.. but it’s fenced off and not to be sat on!

A great place to get a good look over the town of Broken Hill. The memorial is also a must see and a very poignant part of the experience of the whole pioneering mining days.

Lovely park, but couldn't use the dog park facility, and whoever heard of a park where you cant use toys? We are travelling and desperately need somewhere to let our dogs run hard for 15 mins or so, at which point we leave and let the next people have free run. At this one, people were using it like a picnic area with prams and small kids. Our dogs would have been too boisterous. After walking around for 15 mins or so, and nobody moved on, we gave up and left.

This was our first experience at a caravan park with our new caravan. We stayed at one of the ensuite sites and it far exceeded our expectations and has set the standard for caravan parks going forward for the rest of our lap. The amenities all appear to be recently renovated and the little details such as fresh bark for the sites was helpful as we've been staying off grid for the past week and it was a nice place to reset. The staff are all friendly and accommodating, there are events on a daily basis which we participated in and met other guests. The park itself is well located and only a couple of minutes to the centre of town.

We got a 2 bed cabin for 4 nights. It was fine for us and our 2 greyhounds. Check-in was quick, friendly & efficient, the rooms were clean. A minor whinge was that the cooking utensils & pots were limited and the kitchenette space was small. Fine for 1 or 2 nights, but if we stayed longer in future we would get a 3 bed cabin.

Great powered camping sites, with no issues getting the tent pegs in. The spots near the laundry were nice and quiet, the spots at the back near the camp kitchen were noisier being near the highway and a business with dog protection at night, and early morning rooster. The bathrooms were top notch. The kids play areas were amazing. Our kids didn't want to leave. We also enjoyed the shared fire pit area. The camp kitchen was indoors and amazing, with outdoor BBQ. The service desk was the most friendly we've used.

We've stayed at hundreds of motels around Australia and this is one of the best ever. Great set up with dining area, lovely kitchenette and a comfortable big sofa that leads into a separate bedroom with walk in wardrobe space and a large, modern bathroom. The bed was luxurious and even though it looks as if it's situated on a highway it's very quiet. What a gem!

Broken Hill City Sights Tours offers a range of sightseeing experiences, including cultural and theme tours, nature and wildlife tours, as well as full-day and half-day options. The operators have over 67 years of experience in the local area. Milton, a knowledgeable guide with a deep understanding of the region's history and culture, provides insightful commentary during the tours. Visitors appreciated his expertise and willingness to go above and beyond to make their time in Broken Hill memorable.
We took the day tour with Milton which included the Day Dream Mine, Mundi Mundi Lookout, Silverton, Mad Max Museum plus gallery's. The bonus of this tour is that Milton lived in Silverton from the age of four. If you want to know about a place you don't get anything better than an almost born and bred local. Fantastic day filled with humour and knowledge. We thoughly recommend City Lights.

Highly recommended. We did the full day Menindee Lakes tour with Milton. He was extremely knowledgeable and was able to provide a very informative tour of the entire Menindee Lakes system, the Darling River and Kinchega NP. Due to his vast local knowledge he provided an excellent detailed overview of his own extensive experience in the Broken Hill mining industry and its history as a bonus. He was very accomodating with morning tea and lunch included. We couldn’t have done the tour of the lakes by ourselves. This is excellent value for money, we thoroughly enjoyed the day.

Visitors often rave about the warm and welcoming atmosphere created by the friendly staff, which enhances the overall experience. This was a beautiful surprise to find in my spontaneous visit to Broken Hill. Walking by I couldn't help going in to check the happy colourful and calm vibe. Once inside I was surrounded by beauty. I bought a gorgeous painting from this place. The reception by the girl in charge was welcoming thus encouraging me me to go further into Broken Hill/Silverton and Mundi Mundi. Thank you for the hospitality, the Art, and for feeding my traveler's curiosity! I hope to comeback one day.

What a beautiful little shop. Products are high quality yet authentic showcasing many local artists and ethical initiatives which give back to artists and communities. Prices are also very reasonable. We purchased gifts here for friends back home - loved that it offers that hand made and unique type of product. If you are interested in art on any level, don’t miss this small gallery in the main (Argent) street. The artwork has a 60’s pop art vibe crossed with broken hill icons. This leads to vibrant colours and striking images with a distinct local identity. A change from the usual outback art which typically depicts outback nature scenes, the artwork here focuses on the buildings and events in Broken Hill. If you can’t stretch to an original canvas, there’s smaller prints, postcards, and items such as painted aprons, vases and lazy susans.
David D — Google review
I love the art Amanda creates, it's so uplifting. I'm new to town so not purchased before and wanted a picture as a gift but we are in lockdown. Amanda organised the perfect solution for me with contactless pickup, a gorgeous sunflower picture which made a special lady very happy. I asked the receiver where she was going to display her new picture, she described the spot in the house "because then I can see it all the time". Highly recommended.

In the heart of the town, visitors can explore the Old Town Hall facade, a remnant of the original structure. While only the decorative front remains, it still boasts a double-storey design with numerous rooms. The Victorian-era building exudes charm and history. Nearby attractions include the post office and Trades Hall. Golf enthusiasts can also enjoy a round at Broken Hill's renowned 18-hole championship course, offering stunning views as it winds through natural terrain.
A remnant of the old town hall, now just the decorative facade exists. This still has many rooms within its double storey structure and I imagine it would be quite decorative inside. It looks like it was just the main auditorium that was removed, I’ve no idea why but they did a good job of preserving the frontage. I lovely Victorian era building.

Located in Broken Hill, The Shed is a newly opened art gallery that showcases a delightful cross-cultural collaboration between established artists. Visitors can explore an array of artworks by Dirk Romeyn and other talented individuals. The gallery offers a diverse range of art pieces, including woodwork and carvings at reasonable prices. Guests have praised the welcoming atmosphere and the opportunity to meet the artists behind the captivating creations.
Visiting The Shed is a must when you visit Broken Hill. This rustic gallery has beautiful art (paintings and woodwork) created by two local artists along with a great selection of gifts and prints. All visitors receive such a warm welcome and Caroline and Dirk are very generous with their time and local knowledge. Highly recommended for a browse or stay for a cuppa.

The most authentic gallery in Broken Hill - welcoming chats about the town, art and life.. so enjoyed meeting these local artists and taking in lovely colours, forms and creativity of this gorgeous district. So much that we decided a few pieces of genuine art is the best souvenir.. so we returned to buy the next day. Dirk and Brian were genuinely moved to know about where their work was going and how special it was for us. We’ve never met the artist and purchased from them before - what a great experience.

Sunday afternoon driving in to Broken Hill. What an oasis in the desert. Most shops are shut but we’d read about The Shed and it was a real treat. It has such a lovely, unpretentious vibe and we were made to feel welcomed, but not hassled, by the lovely owners, Caroline and Dirk and their very well behaved lab, Faith. Dirk’s artwork reflects the beautiful natural environment, mostly from a macro view, looking at the gorgeous patterns and colours unique to this area. Dirk is a skilled woodworker as well. Other artists are also on show, including beautiful work by indigenous artist, Brian Harris. The Shed is also a community meeting hub for friends and groups. It’s well worth a visit if you’re going to Broken Hill.

Sundown Trail is a free nature trail located in the Living Desert State Park, accessible from the highway towards Tibooburra. The trail offers stunning views and diverse landscapes, making it a great hike for adults and older kids. It's recommended to start the walk 1.5 hours before sunset to ensure ample time to return before dark as the path can become difficult to find. Sturdy shoes are essential due to rocky terrain and some rock scrambling along the way.
Beautiful walk for adults and older kids. We did it close to sunset and just made it back to the car before it got too dark. I would recommend to start the walk 1.5hours before sunset to make sure to be back on time. Once the dark hits you won't be able to find the path anymore. The walk is pretty hilly and rocky. Decent shoes are required. The views are stunning. The walk is absolutely worth to do it.

Absolutely amazing! We took a tour which included watching a short film, getting taken through the 2nd part of the museum which included meeting ‘Maggie’ - which I won’t elaborate on. The Historical Synagogue in Broken Hill has a rich history dating back to 1900 when a Hebrew congregation was established with about 150 Jewish residents. The synagogue and attached residence were built in 1910 and consecrated in 1911. Although it closed in 1962, it was later restored by the Broken Hill Historical Society and now serves as their headquarters.
From the beginnings of its settlement around 1885, Jews have been part of its colourful and sometimes turbulent history. The first headstones in the Jewish section of the Broken Hill Cemetery date from July 1888, the year in which a typhoid epidemic claimed 123 lives in the new town. While Jewish religious services were held in the Masonic Hall from 1900 when the Jewish community numbered about 150, it was not until 1910 that a Synagogue was erected in Broken Hill on land purchased in July 1907 by Abraham Rosenberg, Samuel Dryen Snr., and Albert Edelman. On November 30 1910 the foundation stone was set in place on the newly erected Synagogue. A famous photograph taken on the day shows Rev Zev Mandelbaum, the first Minister, and Solomon Saunders, President of the Adelaide Hebrew Congregation, together with members of the Synagogue committee at the ceremony. The Synagogue was consecrated in 1911 and Rabbi Francis Lyon Cohen of the Great Synagogue, Sydney, attended. As the Jewish community grew to around 250 in the 1920s and 30s the Synagogue on Wolfram Street with its adjoining residence for the Minister and family became a vibrant hub for residents and visitors. During and following the Second World War Broken Hill’s Jews began to leave for Sydney, Melbourne, and Adelaide and beyond. The Synagogue finally closed its doors in 1962 and the scrolls were transferred to the Yeshiva on Hotham Street, St Kilda, Melbourne. The last Jew of Broken Hill, Alwyn David Edelman, died in August 2005 and is buried in the Jewish section of the cemetery.Following closure the Synagogue became a private residence. Then in a stroke of good fortune, the building was heritage listed and then purchased by the Broken Hill Historical Society in 1990.

Sacred Heart Cathedral, an age-old structure, continues to function flawlessly even after a century. Exploring its interior is a delightful experience as it boasts of an exceptional community that is truly supportive and amiable. Unfortunately, the cathedral's internal beauty remains hidden from public view, which is indeed regrettable. Nevertheless, visiting this majestic place guarantees a remarkable and memorable encounter for all who step foot inside.

The memorial is set amidst serene parklands with modern facilities such as BBQ areas, sheltered seating, and wheelchair-accessible toilets. Its historical significance adds to its grandeur, and it's conveniently located near churches and heritage walks.
A lovely, poignant and very unexpected memorial to find in Broken Hill.

Good spot. Lovely grass for a picnic. Good toilets. Kids park has flying fox and climbing web as well as swings. 5yr old says its missing a big slide but there are a couple of small slides. BBQ and a number of picnic tables n bench chairs. There is also a skate/scooter park in the grounds. Great spot!

Pleasant small park. Nice memorial for the Band from the Titanic that continued to play whilst it was sinking.
Tracy P — Google review
A nice memorial not just to the Titanic, but to the band that played while she sank.
Ryan K — Google review
Nestled amongst the tranquil setting of Broken Hills premier parklands. Centralised with brand new modern facilities including BBQ, sheltered seating, wheelchair access toilets. Historically the memorial is sentimental and is rewarded with appropriate granduer of the time being in fantastic condition. The site lends itself to close walking proximity to Churches and Herirage mapped walks. Great parking at a celebrated picnic site.
