Piedra del Indio is a remarkable rock formation near Coyhaique, holding great cultural significance for the indigenous communities of the area. This natural wonder not only showcases geological beauty but also serves as a sacred site intertwined with local history and beliefs. History Museums
The Museo Regional de Aysén in Coyhaique offers a rich overview of the region's culture, history, and environment. It showcases the history of colonization and the Patagonian sheep farming boom of the late 19th century. The museum features interactive displays and a well-designed garden, making it suitable for visitors of all ages. While some visitors found it unfortunate that not all displays are in English, others appreciated its audio guide available in multiple languages.
Really great spot, free. If you only speak English just download a translation app on your phone that can translate from your camera… and don’t complain that an attraction in a foreign country isn’t using your native language, people are incredible with what they’ll complain about.
Andrew F — Google review
To access Internet we needed to input our passport number and create a password. It also requires mother's maiden name! There was no staff present to help navigate through the cumbersome process. Following this we were able to download QR code for audio, which didn't work for us.. The museum had some interesting items but seemed superficial in it's coverage. There is room for improvement in this regard and use of space... Lot's of space to add exhibits which, I assume, they are working towards.
Marilyn S — Google review

Very nice buildings and well designed garden. The section of the museum that is open is very interesting and interactive. Good size for kids. The exhibition on the evolution of whales and dolphins is amazing (not sure whether it is permanent or not). Worth a visit

It's a really great museum but unfortunately none of the displays are in English which excludes all people who don't speak Spanish. Would be really great to help others learn about the region by translating all the information. Otherwise I loved it. Extremely interesting.

(Translated by Google) All craft fairs share the same thing: work done with affection to take home the best memories, but this one stood out in our visit for welcoming our time and consultations about craftsmanship and representativeness of work with the regional. Pleasant conversations with the attending artisans. Two stores with two bookshelves on political topics and another on regional culture stand out. A pyrography artisan shines in his technique. There are some very interesting publishers of books on regional themes in the region that need to be disseminated and known more carefully. Transportation service
Terminal Rodoviario de Coyhaique is the bustling heart of bus travel in this charming city, strategically located in the center. This modern terminal connects travelers to various major cities across Chile, making it an essential stop for those exploring the region. While it boasts a clean and spacious waiting area, some visitors have noted that ticket purchasing can be tricky due to limited vendor hours, especially on weekends.
We found it very hard to buy tickets for busses as the bus vendors were always closed but the lady at the tourist information was super helpful - she called different companies for us and even booked us some ferry tickets online for later on in our journey- we literally wouldn't have got to our destination without her thank you so much!
Ellen W — Google review
The bus operator offices were not open on a Sunday I was looking for the bus to Puerto Ibanez / Chile Chico, which leaves 3 / 3.5 hours before the ferry leaves Puerto Ibanez, go to www.busticket.cl to find out the ferry times, or use the office in the terminal
Mark — Google review
Every bus schedule is not being cleared. Staffs don't appeared on time. Especially Gardy staff was appeared at 16:20 even though announcing to open at 15:00 . We had to wait for 1.5 hours to see her. The terminal is fine. It is a new building and relatively clean, but the condition of the buses departing from here is outdated and unfortunately there are not many options to choose from.
Kálmán K — Google review
Way bigger than old one, it's farther too. You have no public transportation to it, so you must either take a taxi or walk a couple of blocks. Food prices inside are airport-level expensive, a nonsense considering it's not an isolated place.

When it comes to car rentals at Balmeceda Airport, Hertz stands out as a reliable option. Known for its excellent service and well-maintained vehicles, Hertz ensures that your journey through the stunning landscapes of Chile is smooth and enjoyable. Many travelers have shared positive experiences with their friendly staff who are always ready to assist, even if language barriers arise. Whether you're navigating the scenic Carretera Austral or exploring local attractions, renting from Hertz can provide you with the perfect vehicle tailored to your needs.
Excellent service (Hertz/Mitta), despite our poor Spanish and their poor English. We got a good discount by going to the office - better than the 20% Web discount.. Yet to pick up the vehicle, but no issues anticipated. ...adding to this, the vehicle was perfect for our needs and we had no problems at all with it.

I had a very good experience with MITTA in Coyhaique. The car was in great condition and perfect for navigating the Carretera Austral. The staff was friendly and helpful. There was a mix-up with my reservation (the MITTA system did not update when I amended the reservation online even though I received a confirmation email with the correct changes) but we were able to work it out after a few emails back and forth. I would definitely rent from them again.

(Translated by Google) The price-performance ratio of the vehicle I received was unbeatable. I might choose a four-wheel drive vehicle on a future trip, but the truth is that the sedan they gave me, an MG 5, performed very well, despite not being a car designed for unpaved roads. On the other hand, this photo is from a visit to the Coyhaique branch (the car was delivered to me at Balmaceda Airport). I went to the branch to resolve a question about an incident in Puerto Río Tranquilo. They treated me very diligently, leaving me convinced I could enjoy the remaining half of my vacation. And so it was. I returned the car with 2,640 kilometers on the clock and without a scratch, just as I received it. They also gave us a car with a bad license plate, which we realized when we arrived in Coyhaique, got out of the car, and couldn't unlock it. A stressful vacation. (Original) No tienen atencion preferente para embarazadas ni AM, y como la atencion para retiro en Balmaceda es lentisima, nos tuvieron mas de una hora de pie esperando a pesar de dar aviso y de que el embarazo era evidente. The square is worth visiting, providing benches and walls to sit and take in the stunning views towards the east of Coyhaique.

Reserva Nacional Cerro Castillo is a stunning mountain reserve featuring the iconic 2700m Cerro Castillo and offering extensive hiking opportunities amidst breathtaking alpine landscapes. Encompassing 1796 sq km, the park boasts glaciers, rushing rivers, and dense beech forests. Accessible from Coyhaique, visitors can embark on long-distance hikes and enjoy camping at sites like Rio Turbio and El Bosque with basic amenities.
I recommend the Las Horquetas trail of 4 days. The reserva offers a variety of landscapes including mountains, lakes, rivers and some beautiful flowers. Next to that, the trail is well marked and the campsites have many facilities.

Beauty: 5 stars, make sure you go to the small laguna which leaves from El Bosque. Please note, their hiking map is strongly outdated. The camp La Tetera does not exist. The direct way to the village from Cerro Castillo, gets you to a gravel road 4 km away from the village and not to the village. Map quality: 2 stars Path quality: 3 stars Price: I paid 56 Euro in Jan 2025 for 3 days, 2 adults, not from Chile
Anna M — Google review
I habe mixed feelings writing this review as the park itself is really nice (especially Laguna Duff! ❤️🇨🇱) the park is lovely, the mountains crazy and the landscape beautiful! The camps have even toilets and sometimes real ones with flush and buckets to throw the paper away🚽! BUT CONAF! Have you heard of Trail maintenance or trek repairing? Some trails can be barely seen as the bushes and trees grow 🌳 especially after some rain it’s nerve breaking to go through the wet bushes and get wet twice. sometimes there are bridges and sometimes you need to cross a river barefoot 🦶 why are are you charging foreigners 3 times more (16$ for 3-4 day) and locals nearly nothing. For that price it like to see some trail maintenance as in all the other parks around the world.. CONAF. You can do better.

Xue C — Google review
From the top of the hill you can have an amazing view of the valley, the Cerro Castillo Hill and lagoon. The short hike (you leave from Villa Cerro Castillo) takes about 6 hours, and it is a difficult climb, but totally worth it.
Francisco L — Google review
The park is beautiful. There is a day hike, 3 day hike, and 4 day hike. The day hike is very popular and there are lots of people on the path. The 4 day hike is the next most popular, however it is nearly empty. We ran into about 2 people per day. Be warned, the multi day hikes are difficult. You must bring lots of warm clothes and be sure to have hiking poles. There are very very steep passes that you make. We went near the end of the season (December 15 - March 15) and the passes were covered in snow, making it very difficult to cover. Be aware of what you are getting into before you go, don’t just walk in expecting a casual hike.

Nature & Wildlife Areas
Reserva Nacional Coyhaique is a serene nature reserve close to the city, offering walking trails, campsites, and picnic areas surrounded by lagoons and woods. The reserve is home to diverse native wildlife species such as pumas, pudues, huemul, guanaco, seagulls, black woodpeckers, and Kingfisher. In the coastal area, visitors can spot sea lions, dolphins, otters and more.
For a park so close to the city it's very good, and it's well worth arriving before 10am so you can climb the mountain, the views were stunning although it was rather a tough climb and took me about 6 hours there and back. I didn't see any humans for the whole 6 hours and i had the whole place to myself. If you climb the actual peak which is just off the trail (which circles the peak), it's better to ascend and descend from the west, as the east is very steep

It was a cool cloudy afternoon. I only passed four people in for hours. Such a peaceful, beautiful place to be alone with your thoughts.

Easy 8km round trip hike to the Laguna Verde through deciduous pine forest and meadows. Path is very even, well maintained, easy to follow and has a steady mild grade except for a short climb near the viewpoint and so is suitable for all ages. Witches Hut was closed when we visited. Lake itself is very pretty and there are picnic tables in small huts and clean bathrooms. The Mirador has a couple of benches to relax and stare at the lake. There is a lot of maintenance work being done in the park, so the park drive was closed to us, but we did see buses using part of it. Keep your eyes and ears open to spot the local flora and fauna. Online reservations were required, but you pay by card only at the entrance. The drive from 240 is a few kms up a very steep, very rutted road.
Phil M — Google review
We did the large loop hike from the entrance up to the top, and it was a great hike! The ranger station said this is about 14 kms, but our tracjer placed it closer to 17 kms, so plan for a,big, long steep hike over the whole day. It was uncomfortably windy at the top, but the views and landscape was spectacular and worth it!

Perfect place for an easy walk. animals are hard to spot so if I go again I would take only wide angle lenses and leave all tele lenses behind. depending on the weather the light is very tricky but its usually dark in some places. but they are good for dramatic photos. consider that it rains a lot so take something to protect you and your equipment.

Great walk to do on a short day trip from Coyhaique. Worth getting a cheap taxi to the start, as the road from town is not so safe to walk due to traffic. Two options for hiking - the lower route should take about 4 hours. Leave early if attempting the high trail, which goes to about 1200m.
