Historical landmark
Fukuyama Castle, located just a short walk from JR Fukuyama Station, offers stunning views of the castle from the Shinkansen platforms. It is recognized as one of Japan's top 100 castles and features free parking with additional paid options if needed. The castle boasts a museum with rich video content and recently completed reconstruction of the castle tower equipped with modern facilities. Visitors can enjoy beautiful exterior views and a great vantage point from the top.
We were able just to leave our luggage at the station and visiting the city for half a day. The castle and the area are well maintained. On top of an hill it gives you great view of the city. Would recommend you to do the museum, it’s inexpensive and interesting.

Worth the visit. Just right outside fukuyama station. You can visit inside the castle for 500 yen. Great view of Fukuyama city on top of the castle.

Fukuyama Castle – A Rebuilt Legacy with Panoramic Views Located just a short walk from Fukuyama Station in Hiroshima Prefecture, Fukuyama Castle is a striking reminder of Japan’s feudal past. Though much of the original structure was lost during World War II, the main keep (tenshukaku) has been carefully reconstructed and stands today as a proud symbol of the city’s history, resilience, and cultural heritage. Originally built in 1622 by Mizuno Katsunari, a cousin of Tokugawa Ieyasu, Fukuyama Castle was a strategically important stronghold during the Edo period. Its reconstruction in 1966 restored much of its former glory, and recent renovations have further enhanced the experience for visitors. The elegant white façade of the keep, flanked by stone walls and cherry trees, is especially beautiful during spring when the blossoms bloom across the castle grounds. Inside, the castle houses a museum offering exhibits on the local samurai culture, weaponry, armor, and the castle’s own tumultuous history. Displays are modern and informative, with English signage available for most exhibits. From the top floor, panoramic views stretch out over Fukuyama city and the surrounding area, offering a lovely reward for the climb. The surrounding Fukuyama Castle Park is a favorite among locals for walking, picnicking, and seasonal festivals. It’s especially popular during cherry blossom season, when the area transforms into a lively and photogenic hanami spot. Fukuyama Castle may not have the same name recognition as Himeji or Osaka, but it offers a quieter, more local experience steeped in history and charm. For travelers exploring the Chugoku region—or anyone passing through Fukuyama—it’s well worth a stop.

What a beautiful castle. Wasn’t crowded at all. The interior is surprisingly updated with an elevator and air conditioning. Lots of nice displays and the huge garden is absolutely fantastic. Koi ponds, huge statues and bonsai. Definitely worth visiting if you’re headed towards Himeji which is about 40 minutes away by Shinkansen. Castle is white in the front and black in the rear. Nice place!

Stunning castle in Fukuyama, worth the trip. Inside there is a small shooting gallery, sort of.
Umesh W — Google review
Fukuyama Castle is a beautiful and historic site that you should definitely visit. The castle's construction is impressive. Whenever you're in the area, make sure to go and enjoy exploring this remarkable piece of history!

Wow, what a beautiful castle. I'm so glad I took the time to go to Fukuyama. Beautiful castle full of beautiful rooms and amazing culture. The top of the castle with such amazing views... wow!! Definitely a place to visit. The garden right next door to the castle is absolutely breathtaking. Definitely go see both!

Tomonoura, located 14 kilometers south of Fukuyama Station along the Seto Inland Sea coastline, is a centuries-old fishing village known for its well-preserved traditional Japanese houses, shops, and temples. It has been a prosperous port town since ancient times and is mentioned in the Manyoshu, an 8th-century anthology of Japanese poetry.
Quiet, clean and beautiful town. Similar to Ise bay in that houses 🏠 are lined up along the bay, doing various small businesses like cafes, souvenirs, crafts and museum exhibits. Walk or drive along the small roads from the tourist centre to the stone lighthouse to find resemblances to the Ponyo movie 🎥. Around 1 hour or so is a good amount of time to explore this seaside town.

A Park Where Stillness Speaks Tucked away from the city’s rhythm, this park doesn’t ask for attention—it offers quiet instead. Shaded paths, gentle water, and the hush of wind through leaves create a space where your thoughts can slow down and settle. It’s not grand, not crowded—just calm. A place where time stretches, and silence feels like a companion. If you’re looking for peace, not spectacle, this is where you’ll find it.

Lovely relaxing spot to visit. There were very few people there when we visited mid-week. Took a bus to and from Fukuyama station, which took about 40mins. There are plenty of places to eat and drink nearby and lots of other interesting places to visit within walking distance.

I super love this place , Very old town and i feel back in an old era, during my visit to this town in May of this year 2023 , i feel happy walking alone and the place is realy refreshing, maybe one of the oldest town in Japan, if you want far from husstle city this town is for you, there are lots of things to do in this place while walking you will see those restaurant , the famous ice cream shop with fresh mochi, the Fuku zenji, and many more During my visit its cold weather with shower

Calm and secluded area. Very quiet fishing port, bus ride is definitely long enough for you to catch a short nap from hiroshima station. Shops was mostly closed when I went not sure if there was any special occasion and most shops were closed during the day. But a few restaurants are opened, definitely do try them out!

Nestled within the scenic Fukuyama Castle Park, the Fukuyama Art Museum showcases a blend of local and national art in its permanent and rotating exhibits. The museum features Japanese modern and contemporary art, as well as European modern and contemporary art. It also hosts various events, adding to its vibrant atmosphere. Visitors can also admire the 'Arch of Love' monument in the garden.
The place is not crowded. Its a good opportunity to get some fresh air from the city jam. Public clean toilets are available, and there's a cafe beside the area. It is 2min walk from Fukuyama Station. Surely a good spot for perfect chill and laid back sunday afternoon.

When I visited, the museum was hosting the "Masterpieces from the Geidai Museum of Art" exhibition, and I was moved by the wonderful works. The staff were kind and polite, and I felt really welcomed. However, it's a shame there isn't a museum shop. So I'm giving it one minus ⭐️🤭 (Original)

(Translated by Google) We took the ferry here for a stroll. Since it was cloudy and almost dusk, it was fun to take advantage of the opportunity to wander around. There are restrooms and a rest area and smoking area at the ferry terminal, so even if the weather wasn't great, it was still a relaxing and enjoyable experience. Actually, a full circumnavigation of the island would probably take half a day to reach the top, but I didn't have that much time, so I just enjoyed the island's fascinating scenery and created some wonderful memories! (Translated by Google) I visited Sensuijima to participate in an event in Tomonoura. It took about 1 hour and 15 minutes to arrive from Okayama. There are about 3 ferries every hour, and a round trip for adults costs 240 yen. Everyone visiting the island seemed to like power spots, and even though it was December, the weather was very nice, so people were going barefoot at the beach, putting their feet in the sea, and being earthed! Unfortunately, there was a fire in the bathroom a few days ago, so I wasn't able to use it. The road leading to Goshikiiwa was closed due to falling rocks. I had heard that you can go around the area in an hour, but I was pretty relaxed and the hour and a half passed in the blink of an eye, so if I can take a bath again and go to Goshikiiwa, I can easily spend half a day there. It felt like We walked around Senningaoka and then rode on the back of a dragon. Although it was a shame that the road was closed, I felt that spending time relaxing by myself was a luxury, and I would like to go to Mt. Omi in clothes that allow me to move more easily next time. There were some anglers, “At night, things are completely different.” I was talking. I was told that I could catch squid... It is said that the power of Sensuijima increases greatly during the full moon... I would like to go again on a full moon day! Step into a world of vintage cars, antique clocks, and other fascinating relics at the Fukuyama Auto & Clock Museum. This unique venue offers a diverse collection that includes automobiles from Japan and beyond, as well as an impressive array of timepieces. Visitors can stroll through the expansive grounds while admiring these historical treasures and even have the opportunity to touch and photograph many of the exhibits.
Truly enjoyed my visit to this museum. The exhibits are old and brought back memories of the yester-years when I was young. Also, I was allowed to sit in the vintage cars to take photos! It was also very fun getting my hands on the mobile music making cart, the old telephones and the straddles of the old horse carriage. The clocks of the Edo period were still clicking away!
Daphne P — Google review
A funky little museum covering mostly cars and then clocks after. Was fun being able to get into the cars as well, seeing how uncomfortable and difficult to get they were back in history. The odd few wax models of particular characters there. I’d say worth going if you’re really into cars, otherwise won’t be much time spent here.
Dave — Google review
Wild I came upon this place by chance just randomly looking on Google maps. Never heard of it before, but so glad I made the walk over. They have a bit of everything old and vintage. Cars, planes, military equipment, old machinery, clocks, etc. The best part is that they let you interact with the exhibits. Machines can be cranked and cars can be sat in. Their phamplet says they believe that history should be interacted with and not be something left in the past. Will things get worn out quicker? Almost certainly. But it definitely was an amazing experience being able to actually sit in the driver's seat. Definitely a must do in fukuyama!
Brandon S — Google review
Truly impressive! Hopped a quick shin from iwakuni to Fukuyama, walked about 10 minutes and literally found myself in heaven! As an amateur horologist, aviation and automobile enthusiast this place is like a mini mecca! First off photos do not do the collection size justice. The amount of antique clocks, watches, pocket watches, pianos, toys, phones, fuel pumps, vehicles, rocking horses, machines, airplanes, and motorcycles is mind blowing. A lifetime of incredible collecting for the average Joe to go and enjoy. These cars are not locked away. If you can fit in them or on them, you're welcome enter the vehicles and sit on the motorcycles and even sit in the airplane!! My son was over the moon while I was blown away by the amount of history and rarity at my fingertips. Honestly, it is one of the best museums I have visited in Japan and absolutely worth the trip. Short walk from the train station and lots to do and see in the area. Only 900 yen to enter for adults and worth ever yen! Can easily spend over an hour without even trying. Great photo opportunities in every nook and cranny of the museum, and the staff was friendly and knowledgeable talking to me about the owner and items in the museum (when she had a spare moment). I will be going back again just to enjoy this collection before I leave Japan. Go, enjoy, and support this incredible collection of history!!!!
Keith A — Google review
I set this museum as today’s cycling destination. The collection includes automobiles, clocks, and aircraft from earlier times. Personally, I especially enjoy seeing the cars — it’s fascinating to imagine how people used to drive back then. The numerous clocks on the wall were also quite impressive.

Excellent museum with lots of old unique cars and clocks. Easy to find. About a 20 minute walk from Fukuyama Station going past Fukuyama Castle. Much bigger than I expected with lots of cars and buses in display on the road on either side of the museum.
Team L — Google review
A VERY large variety of antiques and collectibles, beyond just clocks and automobiles. Definitely recommend going and giving yourself well over an hour, and you can also open and even sit inside of most vehicles (depending on how large you are, as I had a few bumps trying to go in and out at 5’11”/180cm). Extremely nice and helpful staff. If you’re interested in history at all, definitely go, as there are little corners with different bits of history tucked away throughout the buildings (and other vehicles/ultralights outdoors).

Wonderful Zen garden near Fukuyama. Take your time. One day recommended for visit. Enjoy Japanese bath, calligraphy, tea ceremony and the great art installation about zen.

This temple/museum is huge, and there are so many things to enjoy. The koi fish were beautiful and lively. It was also my first time seeing a donkey. I had udon for lunch, and the experience was very interesting. The server explained the meaning behind each way of eating. I wanted to try meditation and syakyou, but it was too hot outside, so I gave up. Hopefully, I can try them next time I visit, haha.

Had an interesting experience at the zen museum. The architecture itself is just outstanding and the installation you can experience in the museum is unique and a lot to feel during and after the experience. I won't talk too much about the installation as it is different to each person what you feel and think but you will be surprised.

We visited the Museum and Gardens in Mid-July 2025, on our great tour of Japan, the socalled "Golden route" as a kind of rest stop between busy megacities. It is a very beautiful estate and park, with some lovely old temples and other buildings reconstructed here, and a spectacular newbuild for a Zen experience in total darkness. You can have lunch with extra big udon. The highlight was the introduction in Zen Meditation by an english speaking monk, who had travelled especially from Kyoto to give this instruction to us. It was one, if not THE, highlight of our Japan trip. It was very quiet too (even in July) outside our little group of 4, we saw only 3 or max 4 visitors on the whole estate and park. Absolutely recommended !

One of the best place to enjoy autumn foliage. It was beautiful. Lovely 😍 I came on weekday and not many crowd, spent around 3 hours. I took private charter bus so its easy to navigate.

It is located in Shinshoji. The garden here is very beautiful, too. And the white pattern of a rock is worth seeing. The building was built by nawa, a famous Hiroshima-born man. That has a strange shape, but I think it is good. It's a half-hour system with max 20 people, but you hardly have to wait, so enjoy it whenever you want.
山梨WSC — Google review
It is highly recommended to reserve more than 2 hours for this place. Due to the light bus schedule that we could only enjoy partial of Shinshoji this time. The experience here should be relax and joyful. We also enjoyed the 五觀偈 Shinsho-ji udon at 光明堂 (1200 yen for one set). The most special part for me is to experience how monks eat these foods. The Unsui chopstick is cool even to Chinese people like me. To be honest, I still did not get a clue about the 洸庭’s performance for the entire 30 mins. It will be really nice if I can have some pre-study or introduction. Or please someone let me know wha exactly this is about! Last but not the least, I would like to express my appreciation to the staff again. They are super helpful! They guide us how to take bus to our next destination. In the end, they even drove us to the bus station! It saved our life and made our trip more memorials! 👍👍👍

Fukuyama City Zoo, located 15 km northwest of Fukuyama Station, is a compact yet charming zoo featuring monkeys, penguins, and tortoises. Despite being smaller than other zoos in the prefecture, it offers an equally delightful experience. The zoo underwent extensive renovations starting in 1999, resulting in newer sections and exhibits. Visitors can encounter 400 animals from 60 species, including Asian elephants and giraffes.
Fukuyama City Zoo just simply the best Zoo that we have ever visited during my stay in Japan. All the animal are in good condition and healthy. My daughter really happy visited it and would like to come again someday

Hight recommend. The zoo is not large but it’s very clean, the animals are near and look like happy. The children can see and learn a lot of things

I do not recommend this zoo. The animals are mostly solitary (even extremely sociable animals like meerkats) and kept in small, sparse, cold enclosures. They mostly do not seem happy, especially the large predators. ASA zoo in Hiroshima is not great either, but far better than this.

Joyato Stone Lighthouse, built in 1859, is a must-see attraction for any visitor. Standing over 10 meters tall, it is the largest Edo era structure at any port in Japan. Located in the heart of a fishing village, this lighthouse offers a glimpse into history and provides an essential photo opportunity.
The lighthouse or lantern tower is located in the heart of the fishing village. The buildings near the structure are from the Meiji era and well preserved. A small cafe, gallery and shops are in square and you can sit in the stone steps to view the bay and boats.

Since the location was perfect for a lunch break, I set here as an interim goal of the day. I had this pizza for lunch, which I bought at a nearby café. Originally built in 1622 by feudal lord Mizuno Katsushige, the castle has undergone reconstruction and now houses a museum featuring art and historical exhibits. Visitors can enjoy scenic views from the top of the castle. The surrounding area developed into a castle town, adding to its cultural importance.
Beautiful castle that has very nice surrounding grounds. The gardens are worth a tour as well as the inside of the castle, which is very modern. This house was built during 18th century and some famous nobles stayed here for a few days. It has some attractive points to see such as warehouse, garden, ceiling and wall. The family who lived here sold “Homei-shu” during Edo period all over Japan. And then, they produced it here so there are some warehouses. The reason why they could build such a great house was they were allowed to sell Homei-shu dominantly by Han, the lord. Thanks to its policy, they could make fortune. The Irohamaru Exhibit Hall is a small yet informative museum that showcases the historical Irohamaru accident. This incident involved a collision between the Irohamaru and a ship belonging to Kishu-Han, during which Sakamoto Ryoma, the founder of Kaientai, played a crucial role in securing compensations. The museum not only provides insight into this event but also offers an opportunity to learn about the life of Sakamoto Ryoma.
This museum shows that Irohamaru-accident. This was a ship accident between Irohamaru and the ship which belonged to Kishu-Han. The company called Kaientai conducted Irohamaru and they got an accident around this area. Kishu-Han was so strong that it was difficult to be against them at that time. However, thanks to Sakamoto Ryoma, who founded the company, Kaientai could receive compensations. You can know the life of Sakamoto Ryoma adding to Irohamaru-accident. (Translated by Google) The steamship Iroha Maru, purchased by the Ozu clan and operated by Ryoma Sakamoto's Kaientai, collided with the steamship Meiko Maru, owned by the Kishu clan, while sailing in the Seto Inland Sea, causing major damage and heading towards Tomonoura. This exhibition hall is named after the Irohamaru Incident, which involved a maritime accident in which the ship sank while being towed, and the compensation negotiations that followed. Ryoma stirred up public opinion in order to gain an advantage in negotiations and thoroughly damaged the reputation of the Kishu clan. The Kishu domain was engulfed in smoke and exhausted under the banner of universal public law. What they are doing is the same as the current Communist Party and Constitutional Democratic Party. He can hardly be called the behavior of a samurai, and is more like an unscrupulous merchant or a monster complainer. As a result, the ratio of errors was 10 for the Meiko Maru and 0 for the Iroha Maru, resulting in a total victory for the Kaientai. This was despite subsequent research suggesting that the Iroha Maru was also at fault, and that the Iroha Maru's cargo and damage amounts had been greatly inflated. Ichijiro Shigeta, who was in charge of the Kishu clan, was a hard worker who worked hard to get promoted from a humble beginning, but his life was ruined because of his involvement with Ryoma. The compensation that Ryoma stole was 80,000 ryo, which is more than 16 billion yen in modern terms, but he himself was brutally murdered without receiving any of the money. There are various theories about who was responsible for Ryoma's assassination, including Tadazaburo Sasaki of the Mimawarigumi, Kuwajiro Oishi of the Shinsengumi, Hajime Saito, and even Hanjiro Nakamura of Satsuma, but there have been rumors since then that he was a renegade of the Kishu clan. did. However, that would be too unsightly, so perhaps the name of a famous swordsman of the time was mentioned. And well, if you do something like this, no matter who kills you, it will only be considered divine punishment. This exhibition is strictly from Ryoma's side, so while it praises Ryoma's negotiation skills, it does not criticize his greedy methods. I think it is better suited for light users, but the content is undeniably thin. It's not worth making your schedule to see it, but it's a great way to kill time. Also, regarding the compensation that Ryoma never received, it is actually unclear what happened to him after that. It's only a myth, but there's a rumor that the money was embezzled and used to fund the founding of a certain conglomerate...Oh, it looks like someone's here, so please excuse me.

Jodo-ji Temple, located at the west end of Temple Walk, is a significant site of Shingon Buddhism and holds two national treasures. It is also part of the sacred Chugoku 33 Kannon Pilgrimage. The temple has historical ties to Takauji Ashikaga and features various artifacts related to him. Visitors can explore the temple grounds and even hike up Jodoji Mountain behind the temple for a scenic experience.
Fantastic temple located in the end/beginning of the temple walk. When we went there, the doors into the back of the temple and the quarters where the monks are staying were open. So we had a great experience seeing all the beautiful tatami rooms with fantastic paintings.

Beautiful and serene but could be treated with more respect. I saw a ladder and various pails just stored along the side and the electric service could have been hidden at the back. It looked cluttered instead of neat. But it is worth visiting.

Myoo-in Temple, established in 807 by Kobo Daishi, is home to the revered Eleven Faced Kannon statue. The temple's architecture blends Japanese and Chinese styles, showcasing a rich cultural heritage. Designated as a national treasure, the main hall and five-storied pagoda are must-see attractions. With its serene ambiance and picturesque surroundings, a visit to Myoo-in offers a peaceful retreat.

(Translated by Google) We visited in the morning, and the weather happened to be good and the temperature was comfortable. The temple is built on the riverside, on a higher ground, and the scenery is good. There was something going on that day, a meeting was held in a nearby room, but it ended quickly. We didn’t see any temple personnel during the visit, but we met enthusiastic worshipers. We also learned to add money for sesame oil and light candles for blessings by ourselves. There was a wooden plaque of Humo next to it, but no one wrote it, and we weren’t sure whether it needed to be written in what way, so we didn’t write it. There are no staff in the area selling royal guards and souvenirs, but there is a bell next to it. If you press it, someone will come out. The temple staff were very kind and even helped call a taxi. Thank you very much! There were a lot of fat little bees flying that day. Later I checked online and it seemed they were bumble bees, which were very cute. Onomichi City Museum of Art is a modern gallery featuring Japanese and global art, housed in a sleek glass-fronted building with a design by architect Tadao Ando. Originally opened in 1980, the museum underwent reconstruction and was unveiled in 2003. Visitors can enjoy temporary exhibitions, city views from the large windows overlooking Seto Inland Sea, and a cafe on-site.

Sorry a display of photos from Disney archives is not art. I expected a bit more from a museum of art. Wouldn't have gone up that hill you're on if I had knew this was the art on display. Only 1 star is for the view which is lovely but 0 for the art. Also you can't take photos of it? Your whole display is a photocopy of an archive. Shame I wasted 800 yen for this nonsens.

I decided to visit and took the train from Hiroshima hoping to spend a nice day in Onomichi. This is the 3rd time I have tried to visit the museum. Once again it was closed. The English website is confusing about opening times, perhaps a visual calendar with colour coding showing the days that they are closed would be helpful. The Buddhist temple Ioji offers a breathtaking and captivating panorama. It is highly recommended to witness the sunrise from this vantage point. As the sun emerges from behind one of the nearby islands, it gradually illuminates the charming town below, creating an enchanting sight. Additionally, visitors have the opportunity to learn about Tomonoura's rich history from a knowledgeable local resident. Another must-see attraction is located at the end of a relatively easy path starting in the temple area.

Adjacent to the museum is the Japan Folk Toy & Doll Museum, featuring a diverse display of local dolls and other cultural artifacts.

It was an interesting museum that displayed toys that colored the lives of the common people in a form that contrasted with the footwear that was necessary for the lives of the common people, but it is managed by Fukuyama City and is run mainly by volunteers. It was renewed in 2024, and a corner was set up to praise the achievements of local politician Kiichi Miyazawa. What was good about it ◇The footprint square that has become a symbol is a masterpiece by artist Taro Okamoto. A must-see. ◇Athletes' shoes are very interesting. Giant Baba's shoes are amazing. ◇The craftsman's house on the site was evicted to make way for the museum, but it remains as it is as a result of the founder paying homage to the people who opposed eviction until the very end. What I was curious about ◆Kiichi Miyazawa's achievements are great, but I think pros and cons are divided as to whether he is necessary for a museum that focuses on the lives of ordinary people. ◆Toys are thought to be aimed at children, but dolls illuminated by subdued lighting may be too stimulating for young children. ◆I hope that it will be managed by Fukuyama City and will not become a museum whose exhibition intentions are misaligned. 31Former Tomo Castle Site. (Mt.Tomoshiro Park.)

Historical landmark
The Former Tomo Castle Site, located in Mt. Tomoshiro Park, is steeped in rich history that dates back to the Azuchi-Momoyama period and extends into the Edo period. Originally constructed by Masanori Fukushima after the Battle of Sekigahara, this castle was a significant stronghold for samurai and their residences.
(Translated by Google) Visited on Saturday morning. It's a bit of a steep climb from the back of the street, but it's not a long walk, so it's relatively easy. It seems that there was originally a castle tower here, but it later became the town magistrate's office. It was a nice view of Tomonoura, including the cityscape.

(Translated by Google) Most of the former castle grounds of Tomo Castle are now residential areas, and not many remains remain, but parts of the original stone walls remain. The castle ruins are now a plaza, from which you can see the Seto Inland Sea and the densely populated streets of Tomo. There is no free parking, and the surrounding parking lots are paid, which is a bit of a downside. Tomo Castle was built by the Mori clan in 1576. It is said that Ashikaga Yoshiaki, who was driven out of Kyoto by Nobunaga (Tomo Shogunate), lived there. After the Battle of Sekigahara, Fukushima Masanori renovated the castle and even built a castle tower. This angered Tokugawa Ieyasu, and Fukushima Masanori was forced to demolish Tomo Castle and apologize. After the Fukushima clan was abolished, Tomo became the territory of the lord of Fukuyama, and the Tomo Magistrate's Office was established.

In fact, there seems to have been a castle itself at the time, but it was not until Masanori Fukushima that it was developed as a castle in the early modern period due to Tomo's stronghold. In the end, the castle was abolished under the One Country One Castle law. Tomonoura has changed its appearance as a tourist destination and has almost become an urban area. You can see the area around the main enclosure and the stone wall, but it's a bit lonely. The ruins of Tomo Castle, where the Fukuyama City Tomonoura History and Folklore Museum stands, are believed to have been built in 1544 by Innoshima Murakami Shinzoto Yoshimitsu of the Murakami Navy. In 1575, Shogun Yoshiaki Ashikaga also came to this castle and was under the protection of the Mori clan, and when the Mori clan retired to the position of defense chief after the Sekigahara battle, the Fukushima clan and then the Mizuno clan moved to the town magistrate. is placed. Nunakuma Shrine, also known as Tomogi Ongu, is located in Tomonoura and enshrines Owatatsumi no Mikoto and Susanoo no Mikoto. It has a rich history dating back to Empress Jingu's visits. The shrine is famous for its fire festival and offers a serene atmosphere with a Noh stage and unique power stones. Visitors can obtain amulets for various purposes and enjoy the peaceful surroundings away from the bustling tourist center.

When Numakuma Shrine was revived in 1871, it was formed by merging the two shrines (Watarusha and Gionsha). Gionsha was revered by the people as the guardian deity of Tomonoura. It was also revered by the Mizuno clan, lords of the Fukuyama domain, and the second lord, Katsushige, donated a stone torii gate to the shrine in 1625. The third lord, Katsutada, then acquired and donated a Noh stage that had been located in Fushimi Castle.
