Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine is a serene and historic Shinto shrine known for its beautiful wind chime corridor, intricate carvings, and vibrant festivals. Located just a short walk from the charming street of stone warehouses, this shrine has a 1500-year history of bringing together couples and fostering matrimonial happiness. Young women often visit dressed in traditional yukata to pray for finding a husband.
I’ve been to a lot of temples all over Japan, this one is one of the most beautiful in my opinion. Very calming atmosphere, also a good place to go if you want to wear a kimono!

A lovely shrine to spend the day. Heard that the shrine is famous for matchmaking, and the wind chimes corridor is beautiful and the sounds from the wind chimes are soothing.
Five stars for Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine. We came at night and the lantern-lit grounds felt serene and magical—quiet, spacious, and very stroller-friendly. We bought a souvenir chime blessed by a priest, and hearing it at home instantly brings us back to that beautiful evening. Thoughtful staff, peaceful atmosphere, and a perfect spot for families looking for something memorable after dark. Highly recommend.
Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine feels like something straight out of a daydream — soft wind chimes tinkling, ribbons swaying, and sunlight filtering through the trees. Known as a shrine for love and good relationships, it draws couples and hopeful hearts from all over Japan. People tie little wooden plaques with wishes, or pull “love fortunes” wrapped in tiny, colorful fish — it’s charming and a bit magical.
The shrine has a huge torii at the back which is picture worthy. There were lots of traditional festive activities happening at the jinsha which tourist might be able to observe and enjoy. And if not, you can always enjoy shopping for lucky charm and gochuin.
A little far off the main street (about 15mins walk but not hard to navigate, although walking along the road with cars passing by can be a little scary). Interesting activities like “fishing” for luck and also the tunnel to explore. Nearby there is a canal which gives a rustic feel.
The temple is very serene and has a very pretty river flowing behind it. you can walk around and check out the area without going into the temple.
Very beautiful shrine. We were able to hear the drum, and see women and children dressed up in kimonos.

Taisho Roman Yume-dori, also known as Taisho Romance Street, is a pedestrian street that takes you back to the early 20th-century Taisho era. The street is lined with traditional Japanese-style and early Western-style shop buildings, reflecting the heavy cultural influences from the West during that period. As you stroll along this atmospheric shopping street, you can browse through interesting shops and enjoy snacks from street food stalls.

Just a few stores along the street. For me , it is nothing special.If you visit honkawagoe, I think it is one of the stop.
The koi no bori (fish flags) look so beautiful blowing in the wind. It's a relaxing place to walk and enjoy some snacks and take selfies

Great day trip away from Tokyo. Kawagoe really earned the name “Little Edo”, because you truly get a feeling of life back in feudal Japan! All of the local shops, restaurants, and vendors go out of the way to being authentic for the area.
The place are full of foods, drinks, cafe, and cute things, don’t forget to see the old clock tower
I actually spent quite a few hours around this street. It’s very fun and has many photo opportunities within it. Very much worth a stroll through it.

Toki no Kane, also known as Shi Zhong, is a historic clock tower located in the heart of Kawagoe. Originally built in the Edo period and reconstructed after being destroyed by fires, it stands at 16 meters tall and is a popular symbol of the area. The bell inside chimes four times a day and has been officially recognized as one of Japan's 100 soundscapes.
Worthy visit from Tokyo its just at the prefecture north of the city Saitama so a short day trip is doable. There is a small area in the city which showcases what looks like Edo era Japan architecture. It gives a vibe of Gion-Shijo area in Kyoto. That old Edo era look. The bell tower is the center of this old town and there are many small shops selling trinkets and food items.

Funny to write a review about a clock tower. 🤣 Though when you come to see this landmark, it's more about the area then just the clock tower.
Old Japanese architecture in the buildings surrounding this area. It is nice to see the old architecture compared to all the new architecture around Tokyo. It brings you into the historic past. There are several shrines in the area too. Though all these old buildings are now modern shops on the inside. Lots of different food, snacks, and shopping to be had. It is a large tourist area with not just foreigners, but many Japanese. And you will see people walking around in kimono attire. It is a fun time.
Note: During the week, after 3pm, most of the dining shuts down getting ready for dinner around 5pm. So get there early and enjoy your time before 3pm.
Fun area with very historic buildings. Its so nice taking a step back in time and imagining how people lived back then. The bell tower itself was a bit underwhelming as its been rebuilt. Doing a google search said that the bell tower rings 4 times a day and we waited for the 3pm one. But it never rang.

Before continuing our journey to Saitama, we made a meaningful stop in Kawagoe, often referred to as “Little Edo” for its beautifully preserved historical charm. Our main purpose was to visit the iconic Toki no Kane, or Time Bell Tower, one of the most famous and culturally significant landmarks in the city.
Standing tall amidst traditional wooden buildings and narrow merchant streets, Toki no Kane is a symbolic structure that has marked time in Kawagoe for over 400 years. Although the current tower was reconstructed after a fire in the late 19th century, it still functions today, chiming its bell several times a day to echo the town’s past. There’s something magical about standing in front of such a historic structure—an architectural reminder of an era where life moved to the rhythm of a bell rather than a screen.
The surroundings of the tower added to the charm, with quaint shops, nostalgic alleyways, and the aroma of traditional Japanese street snacks wafting through the air. Despite the gentle drizzle that lingered from the morning, the visit felt calming and immersive—like stepping into a timeless moment.

Wet LOVED this area of Kawagoe. The shops are really neat and the vibe is just different! Setting the ancient buildings was really cool. Definitely recommend!

Highly recommended. A must see in Kawagoe. You can dress up and take photos. Very affordable entry fee. Hollywood style museum design with immersion experience. The staff was very helpful and helped us take photos when we dressed up. There is a nursing room, a lift for wheelchair users and pram. Great for children and babies in pram. Audio guide in English available.

There are some English translations and an audio guide as well. The guides try their best to help you learn about their culture. This festival of floats originated from the Edo capital but is no longer celebrated except here in Kawagoe.
Found this museum in Kawagoe almost by accident and almost at closing time. In spite of this we were welcomed by the staff, and one of the volunteers there went on to give us a very interesting, detailed explanation of the Kawagoe Matsuri, its history, and traditions that are still followed to this day. We are so glad we came here and we're able to learn more about this festival. Thank you everyone at the Kawagoe Matsuri Kaikan!
Really fascinating and charming museum! Unfortunately I missed the festival itself but learning about it in the museum was great, especially for the price of only 300 yen.
The staff were exceptional and incredibly friendly, and they did their utmost to ensure I understood each of the exhibits and the history behind them. During the presentation in Japanese, one of the guides very kindly explained everything to me in English and took photos of me with the floats! It's definitely worth visiting if you are in the area.
This museum showcases a very unique tradition, especially Matsuri floats in depth. The topic itself was interesting and the staff were wonderful.
The receptionist was very welcoming, and offered us English audio guides.
The older gentleman giving the theater presentation was a true gem! He offered to take pictures of us with a float and props, told us which seats were best for viewing the video, and even gave us a little extra explanation in English afterward. You could tell he was proud of his culture and wanted to share it with others. (He was there around 1pm on Friday, Oct 10)

An amazing collection of items from past and present Kawagoe Festivals, including films and an oral presentation by one of the staff. The museum is easily navigated, and wheelchair accessible. A must-see for festival fans!!!
If you want to learn a lot of good information about the city’s history and the stories behind the local festivals, look no further than this museum. It’s not as expansive as other places but the staff are full of knowledge about their hometown. Come to find out that October 15 - 16, the city will celebrating 100 years with the largest festival ever. Can’t wait to attend!!
Really great museum!! Only 300 yen but really well presented space with videos, lots of photo ops, and really nice layout of the floats and history. Also, the staff were soo friendly - one saw me looking at a photo op section and ran down with a list of English phrases to ask me if I wanted him to take my picture! Another one explained the floats and history all in pretty good English which was a first for me in Japan. The only improvement I would say is they could put English subtitles in the videos but all in all very worth it

Kawagoe itself is a lovely mix of traditional and new. Lots to see with museums and sites and a great selection of stores and restaurants. Yes, it can get busy so go early if possible, especially at weekends. Tourists take a day trip from Tokyo so time your visit accordingly! Free English speaking guides available too.

Very interesting and educational museum focusing on the history and culture of Kawagoe. It’s especially impactful when paired with a trip to the palace across the street. There is a huge scale model of what Kawagoe looked like about 150 years ago with interactive exhibits explaining the history. My husband and I are Japanese language beginners so we weren’t able to utilise the interactive exhibits but a very friendly worker spontaneously came over as we were looking at the scale model and explained everything in English which we found very kind.
I recommend visiting the museum to learn about the history of the palace first and then heading over to palace itself. We spent about 45 minutes in the museum and quite enjoyed the variety of exhibits ranging from ancient to modern times. For its smaller size there is an impressive amount of exhibits.

Kawagoe Castle Honmaru Palace, originally built in 1457, is a historic structure located in Kawagoe City. It was the former residence of feudal lords and features a garden, tatami rooms, and life-size costumed figures. The palace was constructed to oppose the Ashikaga clan under the order of Uesugi Mochitomo.
Small museum and old palace in the heart of Kawagoe's old town. The exhibitions were really great. The place was informative and educational. Entrance fee was JPY100. The garden was so beautiful.

I'm a fan of Japanese architecture so seeing a section of how they repaired and reconstructed the castle was awesome.
Japan is incredibly advanced but also has deep history, I greatly enjoyed being able to tour the castle.
A great experience by complete accident! I was walking around Kawagoe and stumbled upon this beautiful temple and museum. I even got to experience a Buddhist Shinto priests perform a ritual prayer. While I was there there was some journalists and cameras interviewing an older priest so it was great to see the Japanese learning about their heritage.
Inside the museum though all of the signs are in Japanese so I would recommend you download google translate and use the photo feature to understand the context of the artifacts. But still neat to see!
The popular tourist spot "Koedo Kawagoe" was once a prosperous castle town, and it still retains the streetscape of the Edo period. Kawagoe Castle is also highly regarded for its location as a fortress in the north of the Edo period, and the Honmaru Palace is the only building left in Kawagoe Castle.
The original Kawagoe Castle was built in 1457 by the Muromachi period general Uesugi Motomori and his retainers Ota Michizane and Michikan. The only building that still exists today is the Honmaru Palace built by the then feudal lord Matsudaira Naranori in 1848 during the Edo period. It is the only remnant of Kawagoe Castle. In addition to Kochi Castle, the only remaining Honmaru Palace is the Kawagoe Castle Honmaru Palace, which is a prefectural designated tangible cultural property building.
The only area open to the public now is a part of the Honmaru Palace of Kawagoe Castle during the period when Matsudaira Yamatomori was the lord of the castle, such as the entrance hall, the large hall, etc., and the relocated and restored family elder's office.
A less crowded place, beautiful architecture but sadly there is little exhibition to see. There is a chill quarter where the elders meet with garden view.
Pretty small place, but worth a quick visit and only for 100 yen. There isn't much inside and I was out within a matter of minutes, but I like that you can actually go inside such a place and see what it's like living in those times.
We didn’t make it inside. Palace is open till 5pm but last entry is 4:30pm. I’d recommend going early.
This is a bit disappointing as I was expected the castle is much bigger however… it is much smaller than I ever imagine 😅

However, it can get quite crowded later in the day due to tourist influx.
First of all, the staff is very helpful and courteous. They try their best to find the cute cup stopper for me! Thanks! This Starbucks cafe locates in a heritage part of Kawagoe with a relaxing vibe and cozy environment! You can relax in the cafe and enjoying the coffee break. The Caramel Macchiato is very well prepared. You should not miss the opportunity enjoying a cup of coffee in this cafe!

Visited with 3 people and fell in love with this Edo-style Starbucks in Kawagoe! The building blends beautifully into the historical street with a traditional wooden facade and noren curtain — so photogenic! 📷
Inside, the space is calm and welcoming, and the back garden surprised us with a lovely Japanese rock garden. You can sip your coffee while enjoying nature — total zen! 🪴
The interior design is refined, featuring sumi-e art and chalkboard illustrations of Kawagoe. We ordered drinks and snacks, and everything was tasty as expected. Though it's a popular spot, staff were polite and service was smooth.

The quality here is just like any other Starbucks — consistent and reliable — but what makes this location special is its beautiful building. The architecture has been preserved from the Edo period, giving it a charming, traditional look on the outside, while the interior is modern and comfortable. There’s also a small, lovely backyard area where you can sit and enjoy your drink in a peaceful setting. Some of the staff are deaf or hard of hearing, and the store provides an information sheet showing how to say ‘thank you’ in sign language, which is a really thoughtful touch. A perfect blend of history, inclusivity, and modern comfort, highly recommend visiting.

The most unique Starbucks I have ever been to. It's like drinking coffee in one of those tea houses back in Edo Era(not sure if I get the timeline right)
We ordered ice cafe lattes and boo (Halloween special) and sat behind in the open area where there was a picturesque garden. Slowly sipping and enjoying the good coffee.
Loved the ambience but just that it can be quite crowded at times.
This Starbucks might as well be one of the prettiest cafes of the chain. The design is modern and warm, with lots of wood and light inside.
The outside has been adapted to the local traditional architecture so it doesn’t stand out. Even the logo has been desaturated to fit the overall theme.
Given the aesthetics the cafe can be quite busy. There is some additional outdoor seating outside the cafe if you walk all the way through it

The remains of Kawagoe Castle, originally built in 1457, are a testament to Japan's feudal history. The castle was once a center of power for the local daimyo, who ruled independently and established their own laws and systems. Although most of the structures were demolished during the Meiji Restoration, visitors can still see the Honmaru Goten building where the castle lord lived and conducted business.
AMAZING experience. For just 100 yen I got to explore a classic Samurai castle for as long as I wanted. So simple yet so elegant. It was like I got to travel back in time.
It's a quick trip to Kawagoe from Tokyo and so much is in walking distance. Take advantage of it if you are in the area!

It’s Just 100¥ To visit Castle… so old yet beautifully preserved.
For ¥100 you can explore a castle, site of a dramatic seige in 1545-6. There's not a lot of information here, especially if you can't read Japanese. But if you like Japanese history, it's an atmospheric series of tatami-mat rooms with views out to the ornamental garden. Unlike the shopping streets, you can really get a sense of the past here.

We had an amazing experience here. From kawagoe station there is a free shuttle bus for the round trip. The frequency of the bus is not very high in the week days. There are many things we can see here which belongs to samurai. Although there is entry fee but its completely worthy and we can spend as long time as we want. Really nice experience
The location it self is beautiful, but a perv stole my wife's shoes, do not leave your shoes outside, the lady from the desk said it happened a couple of times before, at least she was kind enough to rent us a sandal.

Kawagoe Kita-in Temple, located southeast of the city's warehouse district, is a renowned Buddhist temple with a rich history dating back to 830 CE. It houses over 500 statues and features beautiful gardens. The temple is closely linked to the Tokugawa clan and contains remains of the original Edo Castle, including an annex palace with various rooms and structures relocated from Tokyo in the 1600s.
Nice big temple. You have to pay 400 to go inside. You also cannot take pictures inside which is normal. Nice that i was like able to walk on a japanese temple feel environment. Pictures are trees as seen from inside

Kita-in Temple is a significant Buddhist temple. It is a major historical and cultural landmark, with a fascinating history that ties it directly to the powerful Tokugawa shogunate. But Kita-in is not just a historical site; it's also a vibrant center of local life.
Kita-in Temple is easily accessible and a must-visit for anyone exploring Kawagoe, providing a tangible link to the country's feudal past and a serene escape from the bustling city.
I went late in the day and it was very quiet and there was no crowd. It is a beautiful temple area with a lot of history.
I found the 500 statues, each with their own personality, to be the highlight of the visit. The entrance took a little time to find because I didn't know it is in a dark corner next to the snack shop.
The ticket to see the statues includes the museum...or the other way around. The museum has a lot of interesting items in the actual rooms that were used. For non-Japanese speakers, like me, not everything is marked in English so i had to use my phone to translate for me. Not a problem anymore.
Taking the bus was easy but check the schedule since it doesn't come too often.
This is a good place to visit while in Kawagoe.

It is quiet and peaceful. One thing quite unique about it was that there was some kind of plaza around it where there are many shops for food. Most of them were closed when I visited but seems like on the weekends must get busy.
The temple was undergoing some contructions as well which is a good sign to show that they still care about it.
It’s one of the most beautiful shrines I have been. We can also pay entrance fees and take a look at the temple inside. This temple has a history of 1200 years. The temple is well preserved and maintained for us to experience the history. So it’s a must to take a look inside. Buddha’s idol inside is very powerful.

Kawagoe Kumano Shrine is a popular prayer site known for its unique rituals and activities. Built in 1590, the shrine holds historical significance and is adorned with symbols like the Yatagarasu on lucky charms and wooden plates.
I came here during October 2023 Kawagoe Festival. The emblem of the shrine is the Yatagarasu (八咫烏) - three legged crow, which serves the great god Kumano (熊野).
The place consists of many other small shrines along the main shrine. It also have a wide variety of charms and goshuins. When I came in the morning there weren’t many people but it quickly became crowded. There were also many festival’s food stall and game stall nearby.

This shrine is set back from the road slightly. The crow is the symbol of the shrine. Has some interesting small little places to look and enjoy. Amazing the crow and the various religious icons that are on display. The shrine is in the smaller side so done be disappointed if you are looking for a lathe scale shrine. It quirky and enjoyable!
This shrine is located near Taisho Roman dori and right across Renkeiji temple. Famous shrine for matchmaking/love and also its Yatagarasu, it is visited by both locals and tourist all year round.
It is only a walk away from famous tourist spots like Toki no Kane and Kashiya Yokocho. Also, it is a one ride bus away from Kawagoe station/Hon Kawagoe station. Don't forget to take a pic of the black and gold Yatagarasu.
Five stars for Kawagoe Kumano Shrine. Small, serene, and beautifully kept, it’s an ideal pause between exploring Candy Alley and the warehouse district. We enjoyed strolling the lantern-lined paths, drawing an omikuji, and trying the pebble “foot health” walking path—fun and surprisingly soothing. Staff were kind, and the vibe stayed calm even in the afternoon. Tips: visit on a weekday for fewer people, bring cash for omamori/omikuji, and expect mostly stroller-friendly grounds (some gravel/low steps). A memorable, peaceful stop in Kawagoe.
Cool shrine with an interesting activity for individual/couples/family. And one of the starting attractions of the main attraction street of kawagoe.
Lovely shrine and accessible for those on wheels. You can wash your money and pray to the white snake god for good fortune, and get a message from the three legged raven by touching a crystal ball. It was pretty busy on a Tuesday afternoon.
Very popular and crowded. The rest of Kawagoe had small crowds when I was there but this shrine was filled with people.
There were many things to do which gave the shrine a carnival atmosphere, which is not what I expected or wanted. It was unique but not my cup of tea.

Another historical temple around the area. We happened to chance upon it and simply walk in for a visit. The compound wasn’t huge but I was capitulated by its architecture which was really refine. Truly an artistic piece of work. I spent only around 10-15 minutes there taking some pictures of the temple.
Five stars for Renkeiji Temple. We went for a family-friendly event in early September and had a wonderful time. The grounds felt welcoming, the food stalls were delicious, and the community spirit was strong—everyone was so nice. One tip: many vendors were cash-only, so bring cash (small bills help). A relaxed, wholesome outing for all ages.

This is a simple ancient Jodo temple built in the 16th century. Although it is not spectacular, it is rich in history in terms of the 3 founding priests. We visited Kawagoe in Spring and was extra blessed to have been able to view this historical site in all it's beauty. This was my first time seeing Kyuichiro Aihara's paintings, and they were so captivating I wanted to linger on them forever.
The landscapes are devoid of people, and the dark, cold nature unfolds before my eyes. However, the grasslands covered with dead leaves exude a warmth reminiscent of animal fur.
Other works on display are primarily by 19th-century Japanese artists. I particularly found Hashimoto Gaho's work particularly powerful.

Koedo Kurari is a charming establishment situated in a refurbished 1800s sake brewery, designated as a National Tangible Cultural Property. This unique venue offers visitors the chance to explore local culture and history while enjoying sake tastings, sampling fresh regional produce, and browsing for souvenirs. The complex includes a gift shop, restaurants, and a sake-tasting shop set within three separate warehouses from different historical eras.
We had a great time here! Lots of different sake to taste. And I like that they also have the premium sake for two tokens instead of one. But it was well worth it! I bought two bottles of premium sake (daiginjo). Delicious!

This was a fun (and tasty) experience if you enjoy sake! There were many options to choose from with indicators on the machine as to personal taste preferences so you would know what numbers to select. There was indoor and outdoor seating options.
Our vehicle was parked nearby and we chanced upon this place. It was a place that showcased all the sake breweries’ products in kawagoe. There was a corner where one can buy three small cups of sake using 500 yen, more like a sake tasting nativity. They have a number of the sakes on sale as well. Within the compound, there was also a restaurant in which we didn’t try. Interesting place to shop for sakes produced in the region.
I had high hope of finding a sake that I like. It's cool that you can try different sake's in the vending machines for 100 yen. However, all were slightly bitter at the back end.
If you have a weekness of souvenir and a fondness of Japanese sake, this place is your wonderland. Everything was nicely packaged and displayed. There was even some restaurants inside the building that served decent food (as well as a variety of local sake)!

I enjoy some if them. There is sake tasting too. At the other building next to It, has cooked locsl food and vegetables for sell, you can eat there too, there is microwave and few tables.
Interesting place. Besides souvenirs and snacks, it laso has a separate section which has 3 types of sake tasting for 500JPY from the vending machine.

Kawagoe Hachimangu Shrine, founded in 1030, is a prominent Shinto shrine located just 5 minutes away from Kawagoe Station. The shrine features an impressive stone torii at the entrance and a paved path lined with traditional Japanese toro lanterns. Despite being one of over 200 shrines in Kawagoe City, it stands out as the only one bearing the city's name.

Hachimangu is a popular shrine to worship at in Kawagoe. For New Years people line up for "hatsumode" the first homage of the year. There is also a shrine and some other religious paraphernalia on the grounds. They have events during the year including a children's sumo competition. There is some parking on the grounds, but during busy periods it is hard to get a spot. There are coin parking lots nearby.

離れは母屋の裏手に入口があり、1階に2間・2階に1間。材木商の方のお屋敷とあり、柱や欄間等見応えがありました。
綺麗に手入れされた日本庭園。枯山水や水琴窟、小さな祠があり一人ゆっくりと散策を楽しめました。
水廻りはキレイにリノベされています。化粧水等アメニティも充実。トイレも清潔です。
お風呂は露天風呂のみ。温泉ではありませんが、いつも適温で気持ち良く入浴できました。シャワーも脱衣場も屋外にはなりますが、ガスストーブがあり暖かくして下さっています。シャンプーはKNOLL、洗顔料はAesopでした。
基本素泊まりなので、夕食は宿から徒歩15分程の蔵造りの町並みを散策し、そちらの飲食店で食事を取りました。

また、女将さんのご好意で朝食をサービスして頂きました。美味しい手作りのおかずと土鍋ご飯。庭園を眺めながらゆっくり朝食を頂きました。

If you have time and budget you should go to Gifu or Nagano you will have a much better experience.

This place should win some type of award for their matcha desserts, I had the matcha latte and matcha terrine and I was just sat there in bliss to the last bite. I’ll have to go through their entire menu now because I’m sure the tiramisu and pudding are just as good. Service was really nice and friendly as well, just a gem of a cafe.
I visited the area in early September and it was still very hot. I had seen some good reviews on this cafe and decided to drop by and cool down.
