Art museum
The Akureyri Art Museum, located in a beautifully restored building, offers a diverse range of contemporary and modern art exhibitions by Icelandic and international artists. The museum regularly changes its exhibits, showcasing paintings, sculptures, installations, multimedia works, and even student showcases from a vocational school. Visitors can enjoy lectures and tours while exploring the various displays. One visitor recommended spending 30-60 minutes to get an idea of all the exhibits and highlighted a moving exhibition called 'The Visitors.'
Huge area on multiple levels with many thought-provoking displays. There is also a place to store bags, bathrooms and a small cafe.
Eileen W — Google review
It is great that the town has a art museum. The day we visited it , the exhibition was mostly focused on contemporary art than modern art. Interesting pieces, specifically the coton paintings by Denya Zakn where your mind gets lost in their darkness. I also liked Jonas Vidar Sveinsson untitled white painting. On 3 floors, starts from the 4th
Jerome G — Google review
I spent about 30 minutes in this museum. It has a nice selection of contemporary Icelandic art, and the exhibits were all intriguing to look at. Additionally, the gift store was a treasure trove-- lots of work by local poets and / or situated in the country's punk scene.
Deneb — Google review
Interesting museum, but not for the adult price. The art display was on average, not the best or the worst, basically just art being represented by artists who got recently many awards on their work. Their interactive art activity was fun to do and you were able to send a card with a message and a drawing of your voice to your loved ones, which is nice. At least 18 and under were free though. If you’re interested in Icelandic art or want something basic to see and spend some time on, I would recommend this place. If you’re looking for just some good art to look at, I would recommend elsewhere.
Nikolai M — Google review
Interesting works by Icelandic artists. Very small museum. Lovely café. Visit knit shop across the street. If your in to knitting!
Tova H — Google review
I thoroughly enjoyed a couple of hours here. The advice to start at the 4th. floor ensured a variety of experience and sense of flow in working my way down. I know exhibits change but the museum placed each one appropriately considering light, visibility, and space for visitor movement. I was impressed by the age range and number of local and regional artists represented. The museum's windows connected nicely with the town as did the very pleasant coffee shop.
Thomas M — Google review
Nice breakfast, closest to our accommodation. Coffees, teas, brunch platter, various poached eggs dishes on sourdough toast and pastries.
CD D — Google review
I was stopping by in Akureyri for only a few hours and this was a lovely little museum to visit. I came less than an hour before closing but the man behind the desk was very friendly and gave me information on how to get the most out of my short visit. You can get an idea of all the exhibits in 30-60 minutes. They had a wonderful, moving exhibition on the top floor called The Visitors that I would recommend to anyone. The local artists and children's work they were displaying was quite charming too. Enjoy some coffee at the cafe before you go! It's delicious!

Nature & Parks
Gardens
Located in Akureyri, the Akureyri Botanical Garden is a 3.6-hectare park established in 1912 by Margrethe Schioth. It features a diverse collection of plants from Iceland, South America, and Africa, including subtropical species that thrive despite the region's low average temperature. The garden offers a peaceful atmosphere with views of the fjord and an impressive variety of flora.
Free admission to this garden, which was awesome! It’s was great checking out all types of plants here that some of them I had never seen before. The place itself was pretty big too, offering a cafe, 2 greenhouses, a statue of the original owner of the place, and a fountain. Some of the flowers pictured below were some of my favorites, since they looked gorgeous! Highly recommend stopping by, especially since admission is free!
Nikolai M — Google review
The garden is small but lovely, an unexpected gem just above the town. You can walk here, but it’s all uphill from the town or cruise port, so jump on the free public bus which does the rounds every 25 minutes or so, see the gardens, then walk back down past the church. As a bonus the garden has a lovely cafe in an architecturally designed building which does decent coffee and cakes.
Stephen S — Google review
The gardens, for this time of year, were still beautiful. I would love to come back someday to see it during peek times. We walked through in about an hour. There is a shop that had coffee and some bakery items. We didn't eat there because we had just finished eating sandwiches. If you enjoy flowers, and are curious about the names of some of the plants you have seen along your journey, take a stroll. You won't be disappointed!
Tamara B — Google review
Beautiful and calm place. Nice flowers, and trees everywhere. It has the information for everything around. The paths are easy to walk, charming nature and it has a caffe very cozy inside too. The parking is easy access right at front. Lovely place.
Rosi G — Google review
Beautiful little Botanical gardens in the middle of the city. Easy to get to a great place to bring the kids and family. Nice cafe right there. If the weather is nice. Definitely trying to make this a stop. And it's free!
Elliot F — Google review
I'm not sure how to summarize how stunning the Akureyri Botanical Garden is in person. P.S. The price is right - free! As a tourist, I was taken back by the beauty of Icelandic flora. Also, Iceland seems to have some of the happiest, most content bees I've ever witnessed. Good on ya, Iceland! I was mesmerized by all the different variations of flowers. The Akureyri Botanical Garden was the best place I visited in Akureyri. It's absolutely worth a visit. I would go back again and again! 🌸🐝
Heather L — Google review
Beautiful garden with pathways. Very peaceful. It's free. There's a Cafe to purchase coffee or Alcohol. Definitely bring your camera. The floral smells are so refreshing!
Amy G — Google review
Beautiful garden! A lovely place to spend an hour or more, walking the trails and seeing the different flowers. Note: Some of the trails are not wheelchair accessible, but you can still see a fair amount if your chair can go over gravel. The cafe onsite is cozy and provides excellent food and drink. I had some delicious avocado toast there as well as the best hot chocolate I have ever had. The gazebo with stained glass is a nice photo spot.

Churches & Cathedrals
Nestled on a hill in Akureyri, Iceland, the magnificent Akureyrarkirkja is a Lutheran church that captivates visitors with its stunning architecture and serene ambiance. Designed by Gudhjon Samuelsson, this modernist gem features an impressive white facade adorned with numerous stained-glass windows and a grand pipe organ inside.
Lutheran church I read they only close it for celebrations and funerals and I wondered when this would happen. Well we went today and there was a funeral going on. We saw the family and understood for whom was the ceremony for and it was very sad. The climb up builds heat specially when it's cold
Shanit R — Google review
Beautiful church right in the middle of this town. We couldn't go inside as it was closed in off peak hours. The entire place was really beautiful. The view of the city from the church compound was very pretty.
Shreyash S — Google review
Worth a visit. Beautiful modern church that overlooks the town and the water. Some interesting stained glass and an amazing organ. Was designed by the same architect from Hallgrímskirkja in Reykavik.
David S — Google review
We have visited Akureyri twice now, and an iconic sight visible from all along the waterfront is the Akureyri new modern church. We were unable to get to it to enter either visit, but enjoyed the architecture from the outside. I believe the two front spires are mostly decorative, but this makes it reminiscent of a European medieval catholic cathedral in style..
Graham T — Google review
Beautiful church. Honestly, this was one of my favorite spots while visiting Akureyri. Each stained glass window alternated pictorial depictions of the gospel and of Icelandic Christian history and heritage. It was moving and awe inspiring. It was such a beautiful display of local and national culture, and intricately displayed the intrinsic connection between Iceland’s national heritage with Christianity
Britt — Google review
Pretty church, with a clean design. The view of the city from the church was also great. Good shopping and food options in the central area right next to the church.
Ram R — Google review
I guess it is a modern design church but it would have been inspiring to Reykjavik church. If the weather was good, I could take several photo well and entered to get feeling.

A beautiful church worth seeing from outside as well as from the inside. Around it there’s a lot of parking spots that only needs to be paid from Monday to Friday 10-4pm.

Specialty Museums
Nestled in the charming town of Akureyri, the Akureyri Museum is a delightful cultural gem that invites visitors to explore the rich history of North Iceland. Established in 1963, this museum offers an engaging glimpse into the region's past through its diverse collection of artifacts and multimedia displays. As you wander through its intimate space, you'll discover exhibitions that frequently change, showcasing everything from contemporary art to fashion.
Very well done and interesting museum with thousands of items from daily use spanning the entire history of the town. As I walked around, I felt like I entered the past! Don't miss the turf house in the back! You can also visit the nearby Nonni house and a small church from the 1840s.

We had a nice visit with the guy at Admission, wish we got his name. Thanks for being so hospitable. Through the displays I could really get a sense of Akureyri (Aka-ray-re) roll the r's if possible. Someone could do a show like Derry Girls or Call the Midwife and focus on music in during early sixties to early seventies!

Great little museum that offers a rich and immersive experience into the local history and culture. This museum provides visitors with an in-depth look into the past, showcasing a variety of artifacts and exhibits that capture the essence of life in North Iceland through the ages. One of the highlights of the Akureyri Museum is its extensive collection of antiques. The museum features detailed displays that recreate historical settings, providing a vivid picture of how people lived and worked in the past, each artifact tells a story. Overall, the Akureyri Museum is a must-visit for anyone interested in history and culture. It offers a well-rounded and engaging experience that both educates and entertains. Whether you are a history buff, a cultural enthusiast, or simply curious about the past, the Akureyri Museum is sure to leave a lasting impression. I loved it

This is a very good local history museum with many interesting objects spanning the last couple hundred years. The preserved priest's house is extraordinary. Highly recommended.

Lovely little museum tucked away behind the woods, interesting exhibition if you want to learn more about the city and region's history. Loved the maps collection.
Joy — Google review
A small museum in Akureyri but for its relatively small size, this museum is able to successfully inform and educate, in my view. The museum itself was laid out in a logical, easy to follow manner, showcasing what life in Akureyri was like in the past. Exhibits have concise, bilingual explainers both in Icelandic and also English. There’s complimentary coffee too, near the entrance. Worth a short visit if you’re ever in the Gamla Akureyri area!

Public swimming pool
Akureyri Swimming Pool is a must-visit in the town, offering a range of geothermal heated pools, including several hot tubs at varying temperatures and even water slides. The facility also features a sauna, cold plunge tank, and spacious lap pools. Visitors can enjoy the relaxing atmosphere while interacting with friendly staff and locals. It's an ideal spot for families as kids will love the experience. Additionally, tourists can appreciate the affordable entrance fee compared to other spas in the area.
We passed the local pool several times on our way to and from the ski resort, and every time, the kids spotted the towering waterslides and begged to visit. One late afternoon, after a full day on the slopes, we finally gave in—despite the chilly 2°C temperature, we grabbed our swimsuits and headed out, unsure just how warm the outdoor pools would be. To our surprise, the entrance fee was an absolute bargain—less than £20 for two adults and two children under 12! The changing rooms were clean and well-maintained, with lockers, showers, and liquid soap provided. Just remember to bring your own towel, shampoo, and conditioner. After we realised, Akureyri Swimming Pool (Sundlaug Akureyrar) is one of the best geothermal pools in Iceland. It features multiple heated pools, hot tubs, exciting waterslides, a steam bath, and even a cold plunge for the brave (5-12 degrees celsius). The facilities are modern, spotless, and perfect for both relaxation and fun. We tried everything—the cold plunge, the various heated pools, and, of course, the slides. Four hours flew by in no time, and the kids still didn’t want to leave. Meanwhile, the adults were starving—8 PM and we still hadn’t had dinner, so we had to say goodbye- see you later! This place is a must-visit, and we’ll definitely be back on our next trip! For more north Iceland tips visit my instagram: mrsivyhyde

Wild camping so great to have these amazing facilities. A good scrub before going for a wonderful swim in their wonderful facilities. Beautiful clean changing rooms, clear rules, impeccable hygiene. An amazing choice of pools (we did our lengths). Then a choice of hot tubs. Then another gorgeous shower. And amazingly powerful top quality hair dryers (ladies changing rooms). This is our second public swimming pool experience in Iceland and we cannot recommend more! No photos permitted in the facilities Hence the photo as we drove on our way all squeaky clean and happy. The happy ♥️ town of Akureyri and its amazing swimming pool complex!
Weewildadventure — Google review
Like all local pools in Iceland, this one is great. 1350 krona to enter (10 euros) with 5 hot tubs, multiple big pools, kids pool, slides, sunbathing zone
Nadia — Google review
Wonderfull place, both when you will be for short time in Akureyri and if you will live there for quite a while. Prices for multiple entrances are very good scaled, 5 different hot tubs with different temperatures, three have option for hydromassage with bubbles (awesome after work!), sauna, some option for kids, two bigger swimming pools, cold tub (especially good when you combine it with sauna or hot tub, pretty cool place, very refreshing!). Swimming pool is located outside but you won't be cold there. Locker rooms are dry and mostly clean compared to swimming pools in Europe. There are even drying machines for swimsuits present. Definitely recommend it!
Maciej L — Google review
One of the best pools I've been to (huge call coming from australia). Hot pools, cold plunge pool and the slip n slide was honestly epic. Its affordable and you achieve maximum fun.
Evan S — Google review
This is a must visit if you're in this town! The pools are all geothermal heated. The lap pools are warm but not hot. There's several large hot tubs and some get to 110°F. They also have a cold plunge tank that's about 40°F. I thought I was too old for water slides but these two are incredibly fun! Overall it's a great visit and they have an amazing gym next door to add to it.
Billy B — Google review
A MUST visit. With a plethora of options, from warm to hot, this pool is swimmable year round. It also has a cold plunge, a sauna steam room, a park for kids, and places to hangout. The water slides are really fast and really fun, even for adults. This really is an amazing swimming pool and one of my wife’s favorites she has ever visited.
Bradley C — Google review
Terrible wind and rain/snow kept us in the cute town of Akureyri longer than expected. This was the prefect way to spend our evening and it didn't break the bank. There were about 5 different hot tubs with varying degrees, a steam room, cold plugs and slides for the kids! Would highly recommend if you need something fun for the family that's affordable.

Hof Cultural and Conference Centre is a stunning modern building located by the waterfront, boasting beautiful architecture both inside and out. The center offers city information, including maps and sightseeing options, as well as a tourist information desk providing helpful advice. Visitors can enjoy art exhibitions, concerts, a cafe, and a lovely shop within the center. Additionally, there are transportation options available from in front of the building for excursions to attractions such as Godafoss waterfall.
Visited the Hof Cultural and Conference Centre at Strandgata 12, 600 Akureyri, Iceland, and was immediately struck by its stunning architecture—it's truly an amazing building that blends modern design with the natural beauty of the area. Even though our stay was brief, the amenities blew me away: from versatile conference spaces to thoughtful touches like on-site EV chargers, which made things super convenient for us road-trippers. The service was fantastic, staff were warm, efficient, and went out of their way to make us feel welcome. And shoutout to the restrooms: spotlessly clean and well-maintained, which is always a highlight in my book. If you're in Akureyri for events, culture, or just a quick stop, this place is a gem.

Nice building just across the City Parking lot. You can pick up maps, buy souvenirs (very pricey), and use the facilities (located in the basement) free of charge. The interior and exterior are beautifully designed to represent Icelandic landscapes.

A beautiful place that hosts the city’s cultural events including concerts and social gatherings. There’s a tourist information center that provides free information. There is a quality arts and crafts store located within the info center. Off to the side, there’s a mini art gallery from local artists. If you’re hungry and want a break, there’s a cafe on the other side of the info center. The building inside is stunning with wood incorporated to the modern design. It also has toilets which is useful.

Nonnahús, also known as Nonni House, is a significant part of Old Town and a prominent landmark in Akureyri. It was the childhood home of Jon Sveinsson, an Icelandic writer and Jesuit priest who used the pen name Nonni. The house is beautifully decorated with low ceilings that require caution to avoid hitting one's head. Visitors can enjoy walking around the area to see the old houses and immerse themselves in the history of this small fishing village in Iceland.
I can definitely recommend a visit, it was fun to explore this house from the 1870s, especially climbing up to the attic! Amazing that so many people lived here. They have done an excellent job setting it up to the memory of Nonni, it was special to see the trunk he used while travelling! (This is part of the Akureyri Museum and entrance is included in that ticket price.)

Bar
Located on the main shopping street, Götubarinn is a popular spot in Akureyri known for its outdoor beer garden and live music. The venue stays open until 3 AM and offers cozy spaces to enjoy conversations or listen to jazzy tunes on the house piano. It's considered the only true bar in Akureyri with an amazing staff and a great selection of somewhat expensive craft beers.
The bar with a memorable and non-standard design. You can find both cozy corners with dim lighting and more open spaces. The interior details create a sense that the bar has its own history and personality. Guinness lovers, as well as those who appreciate an original atmosphere, might find this place appealing.
Alex — Google review
Great bar, well really the only true bar in Akureyri. That does not take away from the amazing staff and people. Great selection of beer, somewhat expensive, but all beer is in Akureyri (not their fault). This was a great place to people watch, meet friends, tie one on, meet strangers, sing with strangers at the piano, get told I was "not that old" and that was before the students hit the place. The ENTIRE CITY comes in around 10pm on a Friday or Saturday night. I had a blast and went back several times. I recommend it greatly.
Chris C — Google review
This bar is so much fun! Every single person who works here is really cool. I was here a little over a year ago, and I was probably in there almost every single day that I was in town which was about 3 weeks. The bartenders are really nice, the crowd is of the nicest crowds of people I have ever encountered consistently, and it is extremely spacious. There is a cool, outside patio, a main bar area, a separate room with separate bar (bar open when it's busy), and a couple of pianos. They have Fernet, Opal, Tópas, and a ton of other offerings. They have a decent selection of beer on draft too. (The only reason I listed kr 20.000 was because I was there a lot, hahaha. They have happy hour.) I hope to get back there as soon as possible to hang out with everyone again. 10/10

The bartender saw me entering and still kept talking to his friends at the bar and they had to tell him to take care of me I asked for a whiskey sour and there was no measuring, so as expected I only taste lemon 🤮 Decoration of the place is nice but this kind of service kills the atmosphere

This is where the local 18 year old (I swear there were 12yos in there) farm boys go to flirt with each other. Unless you can speak icelantic, have a justin beiner haircut, and are no older than 18, this is not a cool or welcoming place to be. They'll also charge you more than the locals.

St Peter's Catholic Church, located on Eyrarlandsvegi 26, boasts a striking exterior with red and white colors. Named after the revered saint St. Peter, this beautiful church in Akureyri is well-maintained and neat. Visitors have described it as one of the most beautiful churches they've seen in Iceland. The church is known for its welcoming atmosphere, with friendly parishioners and people serving there.

Holy mass at 11AM every Sunday in the St Peter’s Catholic Church. This is very nice.

(Translated by Google) Beautiful building. It is named after Saint Peter and is characterized by its red and white colors. The building was constructed in 1912 and purchased by the church in 1952. Between 1998 and 2000 it was converted into St. Peter's Church. The church is always open for private prayer. (Original) Schönes Bauwerk. (Translated by Google) I went on a birthday trip to Iceland and visited this beautiful church in Akureyri. To make my day even better, I was greeted by Sister Bia, who was at the door and is also Brazilian. I attended the mass, feeling very excited to be there, and at the end, the sisters and the priest took us out for coffee and a chat. It was the best experience! Incredible!!!! Unfortunately, I don't have Sister Bia's contact information, but I would love to talk to her and keep this friendship alive. Right now, I carry everyone in my heart and I pray to God that one day I can go back. A big kiss to everyone. God bless you!

Nestled in the heart of Akureyri, Bláa Kannan Cafe is a charming spot with its inviting blue siding and vibrant red roof. Throughout the day, visitors can savor freshly baked bread, delectable cakes, and light meals alongside exceptional coffee. As evening sets in, the cafe transforms into a relaxed setting ideal for unwinding over conversations or enjoying a nightcap after a day on the nearby slopes.
It's my first visit to Akureyri, and I tried special Icelandic Christmas dessert "SÖRUR" omg Fantastic!!!!!! super delicious with black coffee!!

I’m currently on the Scandinavia and Iceland trip. Visited Akureyri, Iceland, on a weekday late afternoon. Lovely little coffee shop in town. Very calm and pleasant city. Popped into this coffee shop for a refresher. Ordered a cappuccino and a cake. It's very nice indeed. Cost 1,990 ISK or around £12

We tried the chocolate latte and chocolate frappe—both were rich, indulgent, and perfectly balanced in sweetness. The lemon cheesecake stood out for its silky texture and subtle citrus tang, while the vegetable quiche had a lovely flaky crust and a hearty, well-seasoned filling. The ambiance was cozy and inviting, with friendly staff that made the experience even more enjoyable.
Patrick C — Google review
we ate lunch at the Bláa Kannan Café. It has a great atmosphere .The soup, sandwiches, desserts and beverages we had were delicious! We had read online to try the Sukkuladi Terta cake (like a chocolate cake). We choose that and a slice of Eplaterta (apple and marzipan like pie). Both were great! We recommend stopping in for a treat or meal when you are in Akureyri.

Blaa Kannan Cafe is a spacious coffee shop - restaurant in a central location in Akureyri. The service is super friendly and polite. We loved the fresh cakes, cheesecake was delicious! The quiche too! Totally recommend it!

17 September 2024. Nice cafe with old fashioned deco, I'm not sure if they are real antiques but they look like they are. The coffee was tasty, and the soup was good, but the grilled sandwiches were a bit dry for our taste. Would definitely come again.
Alan C — Google review
Coffee here was really delicious. We tried the bagel with cream cheese, tomato and avocado and it was also great. The bagel was amazing. Took a traditional Icelandic granola and rhubarb cake to go and oh my wish we had taken two! Great place to stop for coffee and a bite!

INTO THE ARCTIC is a museum in town that offers an exhibition on the history of the Arctic. The museum features well-done displays and a large collection of bird taxidermy, providing visitors with an entertaining experience. Additionally, there are other museums in the surrounding area, such as the Herring Era Museum and Sundry Museum, each offering unique insights into local history.
Small museum that opened a year ago containing hundreds of objects around Iceland and Greenland. Most objects don’t have explanation plates but just ask the owner, he will love telling you more about them! You can also get a local meal for a very reasonable price!
J.M. S — Google review
The museum was fun and interesting and the staff was great. I definitely recommend checking out this museum if you are in Akureyri. Also, the food in their restaurant is really, really tasty - possibly the best food we had in Iceland when visiting.
Lydia D — Google review
The restaurant in the museum is apparently amongst the cheapest in Iceland. 1800ICR for a main course (lamb or fish) + refillable soup + refillable salad + refillable coffee. The museum itself is interesting, but small and may easily be avoided as Its 1500ICR per adult. Helpful chap at the counter. Also met the retured pilot/owner who owns the museum . Interesting chap!!
Freaky — Google review
Quirky privately owned museum with well done displays and an extraordinarily amount of bird taxidermy from a private collection. Be sure to chat up the proprietor. He will entertain you with artic lore, jokes and shaggy dog stories. The icelandic home cooking restaurant which is located in the same building served the best meal that I had in Iceland.
Chris Y — Google review
Small exhibition about arctic circle, the problem is most of information is written in Icelandic, English explanation is either missing or difficult to read.
Dean S — Google review
Very interesting and detailed exhibitions. The owner even talked us through most of the museum. Highly recommended!

The Akureyri Municipal Library is a modern building located in the heart of the city, providing a peaceful and cozy atmosphere for reading and studying. Visitors can enjoy free Wi-Fi, access to books and magazines in multiple languages, as well as movies and music for rent. The library's friendly staff is always ready to assist, while the on-site cafe offers a variety of refreshments.
We stopped in Akureyri on our cruise and were walking to a disc golf course when we found this wonderful library. What a pleasant surprise! So bright and colorful inside with beautiful displays. And they had cooking pans etc to check out! Being from the US, we had never seen this before but what a great idea! Who wouldn’t want to sit and stay awhile?!

Also movies and music to rent. There is a free WiFi for locals and tourists. The library's staff is helpful and friendly. Ordakaffi is a nice café at the library, offering lunch, café and pastry. It’s recommended by the locals.

Rostislav G — Google review
I can only submit the outside as it was closed when I went there. Looks fascinating. Access is fine from the top end - what I would call the church end. Fairly easy slope but narrow. If you're in a chair, check access, it may not be wide enough. To get into the house itself is up a few steps so be aware. Gardens running down the slope involve steps and quite a few, again be aware. Waterfall at the bottom is lovely. You can approach this from the lower road.
