Castle
Fortress
Kayseri Castle, dating back to 238 CE, boasts inner and outer walls with 18 towers and has a rich historical significance as it was once owned by Emperor Gordian III. The castle's outer walls were constructed during the Roman period while the inner walls were built during the Eastern Roman Empire. The Kayseri Archeology Museum is housed within the Inner Castle, showcasing artifacts from various civilizations that have influenced Kayseri throughout history.

Initially the fortress and its walls were built during the reign of the Roman emperor Gordiouns III (238-244). Since then it underwent many additions and changes. Visiting this fortress will allow you access only to its inner courtyard. You cannot go up any of its walls or towers.

Kayseri Castle, located right in the heart of the city, is one of the most iconic landmarks in central Türkiye. Steeped in centuries of history, this impressive fortress has witnessed the rise and fall of great civilizations — from the Roman Empire to the Seljuks, the Ottomans, and into modern-day Turkey. Its thick, well-preserved stone walls and sturdy towers stand as silent storytellers of the countless events that have shaped the region. Walking through the gates of the castle feels almost like stepping into another era. Each section reveals a different layer of history, visible in the architectural details, construction styles, and even the materials used. You can almost imagine the bustling life that once filled its courtyards — merchants, soldiers, and townsfolk going about their daily routines. Inside the castle, history blends beautifully with modern-day charm. Nestled among the ancient structures are cozy cafés and charming restaurants, perfect for taking a break, sipping a cup of Turkish coffee, and soaking in the atmosphere. Whether you’re there to explore its rich heritage, capture stunning photographs, or simply relax in a unique setting, Kayseri Castle offers an unforgettable experience. It’s more than just a historical site — it’s a living connection to Turkey’s past and present.

definitely worth a visit. Wasn't inside the museum, but what you can see of the castle is impressive. Had a wonderful Turkish coffe inside the castle area.

Super clean and well equipped castle. We visited it at night after they turned on the lighting and the walls looked super good. Inside, you will find a museum and other stuff to visit. It seems to be recently renovated as everything is in very good shape.
Erik W — Google review
The castle is massive and greatly maintained. Have some restaurants n coffee shops inside but they are built in modern style. If they had followed the traditional castle, it would have added more beauty to the castle
Aliya S — Google review
Astonishing architecture! I like the shape of the castle and it's really majestic. There is an archeology museum inside which cost 20₺ to visit (you can enter freely with müze kart). I recommend to visit this castle in winter when snowing. Really unforgetable experience.

The Kayseri Clock Tower is a must-visit historical site located in the heart of the city. Built during the reign of Abdulhamid II, it stands proudly in Cumhuriyet Square, marking the entrance to Kayseri Castle. Although closed for entry, visitors can admire its beauty from the outside and marvel at its significance as one of many clock towers constructed during that period.
Kayseri Clock Tower (Kayseri Saat Kulesi) I recently had the pleasure of visiting the Kayseri Clock Tower (Kayseri Saat Kulesi) during my trip to Kayseri, and it was a truly delightful experience. Located right in Cumhuriyet Square, the tower is a stunning piece of history that immediately catches your eye with its intricate stonework and timeless elegance. Built in 1906, the clock tower reflects the charm of the late Ottoman period, and it’s fascinating to think about how it once served as an essential tool for the city. Standing there, you can almost feel the history embedded in its walls. The clock on all four sides is still functional, which adds to its charm. The surrounding area is lively and filled with energy, with views of the nearby Kayseri Castle and other historical landmarks. I spent some time just sitting in the square, enjoying the vibrant atmosphere, and imagining how this spot must have looked over a century ago. If you’re in Kayseri, I highly recommend visiting the clock tower. It’s not just a monument; it’s a gateway to the city’s rich past. Plus, there are plenty of cafes nearby to grab a coffee and enjoy the view. A visit here makes you appreciate the perfect blend of history and modern life.
Arsalan A — Google review
The Clock Tower was commissioned by Salih Usta of Tavlusun with the decree of Abdülhamit Il and the support of Kayseri Governor Haydar Bey in 1906. The rectangular venue adjacent to this structure was constructed as a time chamber. The 15-meter high clock tower can be ascended via a spiral staircase.

This clock tower stands right on the main square in front of the Kayseri castle and beside the Ataturk equestrian statue. It marks the entrance to the castle which is very nice to visit.

Kayseri Grand Bazaar is a bustling market located in the heart of the city, known as the second largest bazaar in Turkey. Dating back to the Ottoman Period, it has various entrances and sections dedicated to different products. Visitors can enjoy a full day of shopping for souvenirs, clothing, and more while exploring numerous restaurants and supermarkets. Bargaining is common here.
The bazaar was built in the end of 15th century. The bazaar had a big fire in 1870 and it was restored to its present structure.

I LOOOOOOVED my experience there! It was such a cool place and different from everything else I had seen in my life! Although if you are a tourist and you don't speak turkish, beware. Some will try to overcharge you. Try going with a native! Your experience will be better anyway with a friend or two! I also bought my skz shoes there for a veeeery low price compared to if I bought it back home in Canada.

Krásné místoBeautiful place in the city center, quite nice goods. The impression is somewhat spoiled by pushy carpet salesmen. It was the first time I visited such a big bazaar.
Petr V — Google review
Stuffy and smoky. Definitely a lot of selection but quality is quite poor compared to the markets in Istanbul. Bonus is the vendors aren’t as pushy and prices seem quite reasonable (but of course, you’ll need to negotiate).

Really nice place to visit if you want to do an all day long shopping spree, lots of souvenirs shops clothing stores and restaurants, supermarkets and almost anything you can think of. Do some clothes shopping, have lunch, buy some souvenirs, have dinner, see the sight, and so on... Tip, it never hurts to bargain.

Gevher Nesibe Müzesi is a historical museum showcasing displays and artifacts from the Anatolian Middle Ages and the Seljuk Civilization. The exhibits provide visitors with insights into the culture, lifestyle, and achievements of these eras. It is a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts who wish to learn more about Turkey's rich heritage.
It's a fantastic museum! Edifice as well as the exhibition are exquisite. The only downside is the lack of descriptions in any other language than Turkish. It's so beautiful that I will still give it a 5 stars.
BARTOSZ R — Google review
An interesting place to gain insights into the Seljuck culture. I found myself wanting more, however. I was disappointed not to see the Museum of Medicine - I didn't find it there. It's an open air museum, so quite cold in winter. For 15TRY its worth the trip.
Illka G — Google review
As per the will of his sister Gevher Nesibe, who died.of an illness, the Anatolian Seljuk State Sultan Giyaseddin Keyhüsrev I commissioned this structure in the year 1204. The structure is comprised of a medica madrasah, hospital and a mental asylum. The madrasah is regarded as the Anatolia's first applied medicine madrasah and hospital. Currently it houses the Seljuk Civilization Museum.

The entrance fee per january 2024 is 15 TL/person. It is a well designed/planned museum with limited English description/stories but they put an english note on most objects. The overall museum is bigger than what it seem, I really like the lay out of it. Do not skip the music/theraphy hall it is pretty, so is the hammam. I got a bit of shock with sudden human model in this hall, just be aware. The museum is empty, I can enjoy all of it by myself (went there around 10am).
Prisa R — Google review
The museum is located in a central area so visiting it is easy. The architecture and the design of each room are very nice and have a nostalgic feeling. While you are visiting parts of the museum, you listen to very relaxing music and tunes that make you feel like in past times. Entrance fee is 30 TRY

Too much cold if visiting in winter. It's really warmer outside the walls of the museum. Most part of exhibits does not have translations. Entrance fee is 2 lira.

This is a very good and informing museum in the very center of Kayseri, right inside a beautiful park. The museum is about the Seljuks, which occupied large territories in Asia from early medieval times, focusing on their origins, history and culture. Don't expect a world class museum, but honestly it exceeded my expectations with a great layout and some interactive displays. Symbolic entry fee of 4TL, count on 1 hour for a visit

Constructed between 1228 and 1237 by Empress Mahperi Hunat, wife of Sultan Alaettin Keykubat, this complex showcases an impressive array of structures including a grand mosque, an octagonal mausoleum for the empress herself, a theological school (medrese), and a traditional hamam.

The three sarcophaguses found in the tomb belong to Hunat Hatun, Selçuki Hatun (daughter of Giyaseddin Keyhüsrev) and an unknown woman from the dynasty. (Translated by Google) Hunat Hatun Tomb was built in the classical Seljuk style and is the most ornamental and spectacular tomb in Kayseri. It was built in 1238 by Mahperi Hunat Hatun, the wife of Seljuk Ruler Alaaddin Keykubat I. Hunat Hatun Tomb (dome), one of the structures of the Hunat Hatun Social Complex, is a building located between the mosque and the madrasa and was added to the building group later. It was built in 1238 by Mahperi Hunat Hatun, the wife of Seljuk Ruler Alaaddin Keykubat I. Hunat Hatun Tomb was built in the classical Seljuk style and is the most ornate and spectacular tomb in Kayseri. However, since its location is between the mosque and the madrasah and the (west) side facing the street is closed by a wall, only its cone is visible from the outside. While the courtyard where the tomb is located can be accessed from within the mosque, the interior of the tomb can be reached from within the madrasa via stairs. The tomb, which is one of the works symbolizing the peak of Seljuk art with its stone decorations on its exterior, is an eight-sided structure placed on a square base. The dimensions of the square pedestal it sits on are 8.3X7.6 meters. Between the pedestal and the ground on which the tomb sits (except for the facade of the tomb adjacent to the madrasah), the east, west and south facades were given 5 rows of muqarnas, and in this way, the dimensions of the area on which the tomb sits reached 9X9 meters. There are colonnades at the corners of the building. The outer surfaces have double arches and legs. The surfaces of the arches, the columns at the corners and the triangular spaces at the top of the arches are each decorated with separate geometric motifs. A belt with thuluth inscription in relief surrounds the tomb, 4.90 meters above the ground where the building sits. This thuluth script is Ayet'el Kürsi. The muqarnas belt, located just above this belt, goes around the entire perimeter together with the colonnades. An octagonal pyramid covers the tomb from the outside. The inside view of this pyramid is in dome shape. The southern wall of the interior is completely covered by mirabiya and is decorated. There are three sarcophagi inside the tomb. The closest thing to the mihrabiye in the tomb is the sarcophagus of Mahperi Hunat Hatun in the form of a marble sarcophagus. It is known that the sarcophagus in the middle belongs to Selçuk Hatun, but it is not known to whom the sarcophagus near the entrance belongs.

Between the mosque and the madrasa and according to the determination of Halk Karamağaralı, both the mosque and the madrasa were forcibly built without a portal in place of an older building. The floor of the dome is also decorated with marble muqarnas, and the outer surface in particular is decorated. What is striking is the belt with the inscription Âyetü'l-Kürsî, which moves under the cone with the windows with muzeyyen stitching. Of the three sarcophagi in the tomb, Huand Hatun's consisted of an ancient sarcophagus lid; Although his inscription does not contain a date, his son is II. It is also stated that Keykhusrev died. The Forum Kayseri Shopping Center is a bustling mall that features numerous popular chain stores selling fashion, electronics and other goods. Additionally, it boasts a food court where visitors can enjoy a variety of dining options and a movie theater for entertainment purposes. This shopping center offers an array of shopping and leisure activities all under one roof.
Within three weeks staying in Kayseri, I found here the largest shopping center over the city. Turkish people call it, AVM ( AlışVeriş Merkezi). Interestingly, the prices are affordable as well rather than other cities that i have visited. It is really a large center u can find whatever product and brands you want.

Forum Kayseri: A Comprehensive Shopping Destination Forum Kayseri undeniably stands as Kayseri's premier shopping mall. Its prime location in the heart of the city, coupled with its expansive size, makes it a convenient and attractive destination for locals and visitors alike. The mall houses a diverse range of both national and international brands, ensuring there's something to cater to every taste and budget. Fashion enthusiasts will find themselves spoilt for choice with stores like LC Waikiki, FLO, Boyner, and DeFacto, while the mall's other offerings extend to electronics, home goods, and more. A particular highlight is the mall's extensive food court. Offering a tantalizing array of both local and international cuisines, it's the perfect spot to refuel after a shopping spree or to enjoy a leisurely meal with friends and family. While Forum Kayseri undoubtedly excels in providing a comprehensive shopping experience, it's worth noting that the mall can become quite crowded during peak shopping hours. Nevertheless, its efficient layout and ample parking facilities help to mitigate any potential inconveniences. Overall, Forum Kayseri is a must-visit for anyone exploring Kayseri. Its combination of retail therapy, dining options, and convenient location make it a standout shopping destination in the city.

Ataturk House Museum, located in the Imamizade Rasit Aga Mansion, is a historical site dedicated to Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the founder of the Republic of Turkey. This 19th-century building showcases typical Late Ottoman Period architecture and served as Ataturk's residence during his visits to Kayseri from 1919 to 1934. The museum features a wax statue of Ataturk and displays photographs from his time in Kayseri.
The building is known as the Imamizade Rasit Aga Mansion. The House and Museum of Atatürk building was constructed in the 19th century. It is an historic Turkish house of the Late Ottoman Period. Besides its cultural significance, the mansion is particularly important for hosting Mustafa Kemal Atatürk in December 19 and 20, 1919. Atatürk visited Kayseri the first time on behalf of the Delegation Committee, this mansion had him as a guest for two nights.

The leader and founder of the Republic of Türkiye stayed in this house during his visit to Kayseri. It is a showcase of the house and the way that it was arranged in 1919 when Ataturk stayed there. The mansion was built in the 19th century in late Ottoman fashion and is known as the Imamizade Raşit Ağa Mansion. It is of great importance to this city and the heritage of this great nation.

Nice small museum without an entrance fee. It's good for city to have it. I would suggest to have the documentary movie at the entrance in English too. However, -1 star for the wrong order of boards showing Ataturk's life. Dates are correct, just boards are supposed to go from left to the right. Also wax statues of Ataturk have too much facial hair in spite of information written in the neighboring room: "Every morning, Ataturk used to have his coffee and cigarette, then his barber shaved him. After that he used to have his massage, have bath, get dressed, and go to his study. He had a second shave on the nights he went to balls. It was very important for him to be beardless, and he got very angry when he saw unshaved people in his service".

The Sahabiye Medresesi, constructed in 1267 by the Seljuk vizier Sahip Ata Fahreddin Ali, stands as a remarkable testament to Seljuk architecture and history in Kayseri. This 13th-century educational institution showcases intricate stonework typical of the Anatolian Seljuks. Visitors can explore its charming inner courtyard, which houses smaller libraries and offers a pleasant atmosphere with nearby bookstores and a tea garden.
(Translated by Google) It was built together with the fountain and the masjid in 1267 by one of the Seljuk viziers, Sahibi Ata Fahreddin Ali. The masjid belonging to the building group was demolished, and the Sahabiye Fountain, the oldest fountain in Kayseri, was removed from its current location and moved to the eastern part of the entrance facade of the building due to road planning. The building was built entirely of cut stone according to the Anatolian Seljuk architectural tradition. The front of the madrasah, which has a rectangular plan, an open courtyard and a single storey, looks like a medium-sized caravanserai. The building, which has bull and lion figures on its gargoyles and around the gate pillars, has remained low due to the roads around it rising nearly 1 meter over time.

(Translated by Google) It was built in 1249 by Ebül Kasım İbn-i Ali Eltusi during the reign of İzzettin Keykavus II, one of the Seljuk Sultans. It was repaired in 1547 by Hüseyin Bey, the Sanjak Bey of Aksaray during the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent, and recently restored by the General Directorate of Foundations. The mosque-madrasa complex is the last example of its time among the structures. The current minaret was added in 1901. Ebül Kasım's tomb is in Tokat. The rectangular structure features a mosque to the south, and a madrasah with a porticoed courtyard to the north. The mosque is essentially built on the deep-sloping plan type, common and developed during the Anatolian Seljuk period. It is a rare example of a mosque style integrated with a madrasah around a courtyard, with a longitudinal plan perpendicular to the mihrab wall. Although the entrances to the mosque and madrasah are separate, a wide opening inside connects the prayer hall and the madrasah courtyard. Hüseyin Bey's tomb was originally located on the road east of the Hacı Kılıç Mosque but was later moved to the side of the minaret. His epitaph refers to him as "Hüseyin Bey, son of Sinan Bey, Mirliva of Aksaray." This information corrects the misreadings of some historians: although Hüseyin Bey left lasting works in Kayseri, his place of duty was Aksaray. His connection to this city likely stemmed from his family roots or religious/social affiliations.

This Museum is really an interesting place for anyone interested in learning about this very important time in the history of Tyrkiye. The falling of the ottoman Empire and the beginning of the modern Tyrkiye. The main emphasis is on the suffering of the people and the local struggles during the resistance of foreign (European) attempts to colonize all of ottoman Empire. As a tourist I would have loved if this Museum would pay more attention to the context of the falling of the ottoman Empire and the creation of the modern Tyrkiye, but you can't get all your wishes I guess... I loved the fact that this Museum actually has nearly all the information translated to English. It's really not my experience that you can expect this in Tyrkiye, unfortunately. I'd also like to highlight that we spoke to some of the people working there, and that it was very nice that they spoke very good English. Traveling around Tyrkiye I've learned that this is rare and it's really nice to have conversations beyond what Google translate can help you with. Thanks for the welcoming experience and the good advices on what to experience after the museum.

Nestled in the charming district of Talas, the Yaman Dede Culture and Art House is a captivating historical stone mansion that offers visitors a glimpse into the past. This remarkable site honors Yaman Dede, originally named Diyamandi, who hailed from a Greek merchant family. (Translated by Google) It is in the city center of Kayseri, next to the Grand Bazaar. Although it is known as the Ulu Mosque, it is also referred to as Cami-i Kebir or Sultan Mosque in different sources. It was built by the Danishmend ruler Melik Mehmet Gazi in H.530/AD1135. His tomb was built adjacent to the mosque on the qibla side. The Ulu Mosque was damaged by the great earthquake that occurred in 1716, and after remaining unused for 5-6 years in a dilapidated state, it was repaired by Matbah-ı Amire Emini (Palace kitchen manager) Hacı Halil Efendi from Kayseri in 1723. In this restoration, the collapsed cone part of the minaret was also renewed, and the collapsed dome and minarets were also repaired. Although it is thought to have been converted from an old church or palace due to the columns belonging to Roman and Byzantine architecture used inside, it is a unique work of Islamic architecture with its architectural plan and pointed arch applications. The use of architectural elements such as columns used inside can also be seen in many mosques in our country.

Ahi Evran Zawiya is one of the important centers where this culture is kept alive. The zawiya generally functioned as a dervish lodge or a religious education center. In the Ahi Evran Zawiya, religious and social activities related to the Ahi culture were held and educational and professional information was imparted. One of the main aims of these lodges was to provide tradesmen with values such as morality, honesty and cooperation. Historical place
Köşk Medresesi, located in the Gültepe District of Kayseri on a hill known as "Köşk Mountain," is an abandoned historical site that dates back to 1339. The madrasa is rumored to have existed even before its official construction and is said to have been a place where Ahi Evren's teacher, Evhaduddin Kirmani, taught for 23 years.
(Translated by Google) Köşk Madrasa Located in Gültepe District, the madrasah was built by Alaeddin Eretna, the founder of the Eretna State, which dominated Central Anatolia between 1331 and 1381 after the Seljuk period. In the middle of the courtyard rises the tomb-mausoleum, which was apparently built for the ruler's wife, Sulipaşa Hatun, and completed in the month of Muharram (July/August 1339) in 740 Hijri. In this tomb, there are the graves of Suli Pasha Hatun and Aleaddin Eratna, as well as their sons Gıyaseddin Mehmed and his son Aleaddin Ali. Today, it continues to operate as a "Soup Kitchen" by the Regional Directorate of Foundations.

Unfortunately, neither the Regional Directorate of Foundations nor the Melikgazi Municipality is doing any work on this place. I wonder how a generation that does not protect its past will look to the future and what kind of legacy it will leave to future generations. How would they protect their past in other countries? In our case, it is completely the opposite. This place should be opened to tourism and everyone should see it. My late father used to say that when he was a former translator of Kayseri, he brought many tourists here. I invite everyone to be a little sensitive.
