Located in Roccelletta di Borgia, the Scolacium Archaeological Park is a significant site preserving the remains of the ancient Roman town. It features parts of roads, aqueducts, mausoleums, a theater, and an amphitheater. Originally known as Skylletion in Magna Graecia, it later became Minervia Scolacium during Roman times. The park also houses an interesting museum with most information in Italian.
Very warm, lots of walking outside through olive Groves. Lots of history to be seen and experienced. Bring water! Lots of walking up steep hills. A sight to been seen for history lovers. Museum on site and you are able to get a tour guide book full of great information in what ever language you speak.

Love this place because it spans many historical eras. From Ancient Greeks, Roman amphitheatre and theatre, Byzantine graves, Norman Churches set between a large commercial olive Grove with very old olive trees and a great view of the ocean and coast. Furthermore it has a museum the site it's not frequented by tourists.
Joe C — Google review
A beautiful, reachable, well organized, historically valuable archeological site. Ground floor of the museum, with the sculpture, has to be seen and fr a while long. Theatre and Foro are very precious testimonials of old times. Going up, you see a view which is wonderful and the rest of what was Scolacium. It has to be seen, all of it; and if you are lucky, the archeological site is also used sometimes to welcome events, like concerts or similar.
Carolina F — Google review
There is a pretty interesting museum on the grounds, unfortunately most information is in Italian so no luck if you don’t know it. Navigating through park during the August was a race from one shadow to another as it’s getting quite hot. If you go up the hill to the amphitheater you will find a nice view on the sea and nearby grounds.

Nestled in the heart of Catanzaro, the Complesso Monumentale di San Giovanni is a captivating blend of history and architecture. This remarkable site features remnants of the once-mighty Norman-Swabian castle, with only its iconic Torre Normanna still standing tall. In the 16th century, the church dedicated to Saints John the Baptist and John Evangelist was constructed here, serving as a spiritual hub for the Congregation of Santa Croce.

(Translated by Google) The imposing walls and tower of the castle tell stories of battles, defenses and conquests. Built to protect the city, the Norman Castle was strategically positioned to dominate the territory, offering a privileged observation point. The architectural elements, typical of the Norman era, reveal a skilful fusion of defensive functionality and aesthetic refinement, capable of resisting the passing of centuries. In addition to its military function, the castle represented a nerve center for local administration and cultural life. Situated in a dominant position, it allowed the flows and communications of the time to be controlled, thus becoming a symbol of power and order. With the passage of time, the ancient fort has transformed, acquiring new cultural values and today becoming a point of reference for those who want to know the historical roots of the city. In recent years, the Norman Castle has benefited from important restoration interventions which have enhanced its beauty and artistic value. Through guided tours, exhibitions and cultural events, the castle has been skilfully integrated into the urban fabric, offering citizens and visitors the opportunity to immerse themselves in an experience that unites past and present. The San Giovanni area, with its ancient charm, today proves to be an ideal context for reflecting on the importance of preserving the historical heritage.

It stands on what was the Norman castle, built by Robert Guiscard. Then a Convent of the Discalced Carmelites was founded there, then again it was used as a prison. For about two decades, after a restoration, it has been open to the public. In addition to the external beauty, from the surrounding walls, you can enjoy a large part of the panorama of the city from above, with the Bisantis Bridge below me.. Pure spectacle for the visitor. (Translated by Google) Escher Calabria, the myth: interesting exhibition with some pieces that I had never seen live before. Access to the exhibition was problematic because the ticket office is on a different floor from the entrance and is not well signposted. The exhibition begins with an interesting video on the life and works of Escher which I struggled to follow because at the ticket office some people were laughing and joking quite loudly, not caring who comes in to contemplate the works of art. Going forward we found 3 works whose titles were placed to the right of the works themselves but in a confusing way that does not respect the layout of the works themselves. Continuous reflections of the lights on the glass of the works, no heating inside the rooms or bathrooms: we left the Museum literally frozen! Difficulty in enjoying the exhibition due to 2 uncontrolled school groups whose members were shouting, moving their faces on their cell phone screens without caring about those present and no one to bring them back into line for a moment. When their guide saw us approaching a work, he rushed in front of us to explain the 4 notions we had learned by heart without waiting until we had finished looking at the hung works. Last but not least, it was not possible to pay with the teacher bonus because, according to the girl at the ticket office, it can only be used online by purchasing the ticket days before... Which is scandalous because we are in 2019 and we would like to be able to buy a ticket even 2 seconds before entering a museum. If it hadn't been for my love for Escher I would have left without visiting the exhibition! Terrible experience not to be repeated. The icing on the cake... After leaving the beauties of Escher you find yourself stuck between 2 walls of 'donated' works and without any relevance to the current exhibition to say the least... 3 in any case excessive cost for the number of works on display.

The Bisantis Bridge, an architectural marvel designed by Riccardo Morandi in 1962, stands as a testament to engineering excellence. Once the tallest bridge globally at 120 meters, it now ranks as the second tallest in Europe and holds the title of Italy's largest suspension bridge. This iconic structure not only offers a thrilling crossing experience but also rewards visitors with stunning panoramic views of Catanzaro and the sparkling Ionian Sea on clear days.

(Translated by Google) This viaduct, as well as being testimony to Italian engineering genius, is the largest single-arch bridge in Italy and one of the largest in Europe. Designed by the brilliant engineer Riccardo Morandi at the end of the 1950s, it allows easy entry, coming from the airport, or from any other direction, to the city of Catanzaro, crossing the Fiumarella stream in a single leap. It is imposing and majestic with its immense size. The arch is 231 meters long, more than TWO FOOTBALL FIELDS! It is 112 m high. Seen from below, it is impressive due to its enormous arch, which was built in continuously poured reinforced concrete (not like today, which is built entirely prefabricated). It was built in just 3 years (1959-1962). You see it everywhere It has become the symbol of the City of Catanzaro. Following the collapse of the Genoa bridge, it was closed and underwent major maintenance work. Now it is passable again. I report the words used by Prof. Morandi to describe his masterpiece: «a work of art of particular expressiveness, among the most modern possible, as it was designed with criteria of monumentality, without the aid of useless decorations.» Fu costruito in soli 3 anni (1959-1962).

(Translated by Google) I give 4 because it is one of the symbols of the city of Catanzaro. Despite the name, it is actually known as the Morandi bridge after the engineer who built it in the 1960s. It is the same Morandi as the bridge in Genoa... the Morandi of Catanzaro rises majestically, joining two banks of the city, or rather two promontories... it unites the historic center with the peripheral neighborhoods of via De Filippis, S.Antonio, Mater Domini and Gagliano. The bridge is the first in Italy in terms of height. Unfortunately it also has a considerable number of victims... not from accidents but from suicides... in fact, several decide to let themselves fall from a height of around 100m. The bridge is clearly visible from the square of San Giovanni (especially in the evening it is particular), but also from the road below the bridge itself.. obviously you cannot stop but passing by car it is clearly visible in all its grandeur.. lately it is the subject of various fears, given the current events... but it would seem that maintenance work has begun. Let's hope for the best... Speriamo in bene..

Teatro Politeama in Catanzaro, named after the local filmmaker Mario Foglietti, continues the city's rich theatrical tradition. Designed by architect Paolo Portoghesi and inaugurated in 1992, it features a horseshoe-shaped structure with a central auditorium and five tiers of boxes accommodating up to 930 people. The spacious stage is equipped for various performances including opera, symphonies, dance, operettas, plays, and musicals.

I would say a terrible experience... I recommend taking the sofas on the ground floor which are certainly more comfortable... the city of Catanzaro has a jewel on its hands but it doesn't know how to enhance it...I'm sorry...

Too bad it's very problematic to find parking. The Theatre, in theory, would have a car park which, however, for some unknown reason, remains impracticable, thus forcing spectators to park in the middle of the street with all that entails. (Translated by Google) Historical News XII (construction of the entire well) The construction of the public or private building, arranged on two levels and open on all four sides, dates back to the 12th century Description The building was built in the 12th century not far from the site on which the castle stood and one of the access gates to the medieval city. Initially its intended use must have been of a public or private nature, only during the 14th century was it transformed into a place of worship. The church dedicated to Sant'Omobono has been home, since 1450, to the congregation of tailors of which the saint is the patron saint. It presents itself dimensionally as one of the many small single-hall churches common in Calabria and Sicily, but differs from it in terms of the accuracy of its shapes. The building with a rectangular plan, with the side walls marked by two arches, ends with a rectangular apse with a hemispherical cap created in the thickness of the east façade. It currently takes light from two rectangular windows located in the infills of the arches, while the original structure was characterized by numerous openings closed in a later period. The façade, located above a flight of steps, opens on the shorter side in front of the main altar, and has an entrance door surmounted by a double arch of tuff ashlars mixed with bricks. The arch is lightened by a three-lancet window above, now walled up, and flanked by a single-lancet window. The decoration given by the chromatic alternation of the bricks and limestone ashlars is present throughout the external architecture, including the side façade on which two walled-up windows with round arches are still visible.
