Stadium
Soccer field
Nestled in the heart of Saint-Étienne, Guichard Stadium, affectionately known as "Le Chaudron" or "L'Enfer Vert," is a must-visit for sports enthusiasts and culture seekers alike. This historic venue has been the home ground for AS Saint-Etienne since the 1930s and serves as a vibrant hub for rugby union matches and concerts too.
Still the greatest stadium in France 😁 Such an atmosphere and public support 🟢 ⚪

Great atmosphere (well, it is the Rugby World Cup!), well organised, and easy to navigate. If I lived closer, I would come to support Les Verts!

Beautiful Saint Etienne stadium
Bebop P — Google review
Quite an iconic stadium that still retains old-school appearance. You can feel the passion that the locals have for this club.
Oneofthebhoys — Google review
Great stadium for watching an ASSE football match. It was easy to get tickets online. We were about 2,5 hours in advance of the game and it was very easy to park (on a sunday) the car near the stadium for free. Via the tram line T1 and T2 you are in 15 minutes in the city centre. The atmosphere in the stadium is great. The ultra's behind the goal are singing all match while the match was not even that good. I think the fans/club got some kind of penalty because one of the stands was completely empty (home match against Brest) and there were some chants against people in Paris I understood 😉. The stadium itself is a very new and modern stadium and offers all facilities needed. Therefore all credits to the ASSE fans as in the newer stadiums these days it is not that easy to create a good atmosphere. Allez les Verts!
J L — Google review
Easily accessible and excellent view from all seats. Plenty of buses and trams away at the end.
Engee001 — Google review
This was my first time here and the fans put on quite a show before the match. Bothe teams played their hearts out and it was a great atmosphere.

Great stadium with easy access by foot, tram, tain or bus but i wouldnt recomend cars. Down side, food and drink very expensive, two small waters and a packet of m&m's over £10.

The Musée des Verts, also known as The Greens Museum, is a tribute to the renowned AS Saint-Etienne football team. Located at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard, it offers stylish galleries where visitors can explore trophies and accounts of legendary players from the 1970s. The museum provides an inside look at the team's history, including their impressive nine league titles in 18 years and their near miss at the European Champions Cup in 1976.
Very well equipped museum detailing the history of L’AS Saint Étienne.

Fascinating to learn about the great history of the AS Saint Etienne. The tour is multilingual and the lady at the reception desk couldn't of been more helpful. Since visiting I've developed a soft spot for the club and follow them in the UK. Not the largest or longest tour to get around either which stops any boredom.

Museum
Nestled in the heart of Saint-Étienne, the Musée de la Mine stands as a testament to France's rich mining heritage. This remarkable attraction showcases the last operational mine in the region, which ceased its activities in 1973. Visitors can embark on an immersive journey through a reconstructed tunnel that vividly illustrates what life was like for miners during the 20th century. The museum employs modern museography to present the history of coal mining engagingly and informatively.

(Translated by Google) The waitress (brunette with medium-short hair, tattooed) was TOP! Very welcoming, smiling and very helpful (do not hesitate to offer an elderly lady to take her arm to accompany her to her table). The little kid in training too. In short, professional and competent staff. As for the meal, I admit that I didn't appreciate not having a choice of meat accompaniments. Vegetables were compulsory. Otherwise you would have to take a more expensive menu...Moreover on Sunday the choice is reduced, if we had had these 2 pieces of information we would not have come. The meal and dessert were satisfying.

(Translated by Google) A little local history. There are better and more documented ones in the nearby area. Finally, it's good to have a different and perhaps less touristy vision of working life in the Loire region. This city 🏙, linked to Saint Etienne Métropole, does not communicate much about its heritage. As a result, it remains a sort of cultural niche that is well hidden and not even known to all the inhabitants. What is the municipality trying to do? Building 🏢 quite poorly maintained and highlighted. (Original) Un peu d'histoire locale.

The Musée d'Art et d'Industrie, housed in a grand 1861 mansion, offers a captivating journey through the local design history. The museum showcases an array of artifacts including weapons, textiles, and bicycles that trace the city's industrial past. Visitors can explore the three-story layout and delve into the underground basement to discover antique bicycle prototypes, providing insights into the technical evolution of bicycles and the history of bicycle manufacturing in Saint-Etienne during the 1800s.
The best place to learn about the history and cultural heritage of Saint Etienne. There are exhibits on sports, arms manufacture and textile manufacture: the three things that constitute the most important part of Saint Etienne's culture. The building is beautiful and it feels calm and peaceful to sit outside in the garden.
Sinjini — Google review
What a wonderful museum! History of bicycle and weaving technologies engaged one in the rich industrial heritage of the region. Great bookshop. Excellent proximity to other spots which should be on your list to visit like the big indoor market & restaurants and cafes under glass. And I got to see displays and explanations of the origin of the Jacquard Loom punch cards which were the basis of the Hollerith cards used in the early days of programming computers! I learned programming on punch cards in the late 1970’s and there they were from hundreds of years ago. Wonderful, wonderful, eye opening experience.
Kevin D — Google review
I'd highly recommend to visit with a guide to see how the Jacquard machine function in 1808. It has stunning collections and well introduces the development of Saint Etienne.
Salut G — Google review
Lots of items, but the curator should be fired. Absolutely no structured narrative or anything that would capture young imaginations. Many information screens didn't work, and despite displaying an English language symbol, that didn't work either. You'd think that with Saint Etienne hosting four Rugby World Cup games and nearby Lyon another five over a month that the cities would have prepared their cultural centres for visits... The "Cafe" is two vending machines, one for Coffee the other for Snacks...

I had no idea that there were such beautiful museums in Saint-Etienne, and this one was one of the best. If you're a bicycle, industrial and arms history, you should definitely visit Musée d'Art et d'Industrie.

Nestled on Rue Fernand Léger, the Musée d'art moderne et contemporain is a treasure trove for art enthusiasts, showcasing an impressive collection that spans the 20th century and contemporary eras. This architectural gem boasts one of Europe's largest collections of modern art and design, featuring over 15,000 works. Each year, visitors can explore around 15 exhibitions that delve into significant artistic trends through both permanent displays and thematic showcases.
Expansive spaces showcase a broad and deep collection. Great curatorial prowess evident in each presentation of work. Nice notations and explanation are very helpful for contextualizing where an artist’s work fits within the field of modern and contemporary art movements, ideologies, projects, collectives. Funky gift store and high class bookstore rounds out the experience. Plan to go to their on-site restaurant /cafe for breakfast or lunch - even the gastronomy is well curated!

The Museum’s space itself, wow !! The staff was friendly & helpful (even asked me if I was eligible for a discount 😮, being in New York for a long time, it’s like… ehhh, what ? what ?) Artwork looked amazing and very nicely displayed. Entrance fee $6.5 (again if you’re coming from NY….) At the end of my journey, I picked up my bag from the locker and there it was… a coffee maker (literally every type of ☕️ you wanted) for a whopping 0.50 cents (again NY…). Artwork collection: Highly Recommended !!

Saint-Pierre Church in Firminy, just a short train ride from Saint-Etienne, is a must-see attraction. Designed by the renowned Swiss architect Le Corbusier, this unique church was completed in 2006, over 40 years after his death. The white concrete building has a striking pyramidal shape and stands at 33 meters tall.
A very good place to discover one of the most important figures of contemporany arquitecture. It's near Firminy railway station: you only need to go ten minutes!
David V — Google review
An interesting creation by a renowned architect. It certainly represents Corbusier's contribution to the brutalism style. Strangely, once inside, it can be hard to find the steps to the chapel, which are hidden behind a big door on the first floor. Once in there it certainly has a presence. The constellation on the wall makes an impression, as does the 11sec echo. However, it's certainly not beautiful and whilst striking I'm not sure if I actually like it. Apparently regular services are held, where you enter by the ramp and not the ground floor entrance.

Was here and performed with the choir Allmänna Sången during FestyVocal 2023. The acoustics of the church were breathtaking!Absolute must try experience for any choir/singer that gets the possibility. The FestyVocal volunteers were amazing and very welcoming! We had a blast and are very thankful that we were invited to sing in this amazing church. It was quite cold (~+10 degrees Celcius) in the church when we were here (October) because of the construction (non insulated concrete) of the church. Might be worth keeping in mind when visiting.
Johannes F — Google review
Fantastic world of Le Corbusier, enter in the Nef the morning of a sunny day, and you'll see strange projection of sun light rays on the monumental walls. No words. On top of that, employees are so kind there, simply amazing. Last but not least, Charlotte Perriand exhibition was also very nice even if much smaller than the one presented at Louis Vuitton i Paris. Really recommend both of them ...
Jacky S — Google review
Fantastic church by Le Corbusier, though he never got to see it finished. Captures all the essential elements of Corbu's late style featuring expressive yet sculptural use of concrete, as well as a masterful play of light and colour.

Logis Hôtel du Midi is a straightforward lodging option featuring vibrant rooms and a charming bar/lounge, as well as a business center. Thoroughly enjoyed 4 nights of business travel here. The owner and his wife jumped through hoops to make my stay as comfortable as possible. Rooms are great and plenty of great local restaurants nearby. Good quality beds and pillows. Decent free WiFi connection. Underground parking provided at the hotel, but you can also park on Boulevard Pasteur (if you can find a spot!) Highly recommended!

I stumbled onto this hotel by chance after my late night arrival via hire car from Lyon. It was a lucky choice. This is a very nice, comfortable boutique hotel in a quiet, handy location to the tram line. The double room size was generous, with a comfortable bed. The staff at the hotel were friendly & helpful, in particular Chloe whose customer service was exceptional, and really made you feel welcomed and informed on how to get around Saint Etienne.

This hotel closes and locks you out and won’t let you stay in your own room for an hour every Saturday afternoon and four hours every Sunday for cleaning. Stores and restaurants in vicinity are all closed sundays so there is nowhere to go. You are forced to leave your key at the front every time you leave. Creepy staff never at front desk, just appearing when you walk up as if you’re been being watched on cameras. Was told not to order room service by staff as it was a frozen meal they microwave. Do not recommend.
