Kars Castle is a reconstructed 12th-century basalt fortress that includes a watchtower and the tomb of Jelal Baba. The city's rich cultural heritage is evident in its architectural landmarks, such as Kumbet Camii, an Armenian church turned mosque, and Fethiye Camii, a former Russian church with twin minarets.
An unforgettable experience. It may seem a bit steep but don’t hesitate to go up in the citadel. The scenery is breathtaking from there. The cafe inside the castle is closed for some time

A visit to Kars Castle is like stepping into a timeless journey through history. The place is not just wonderful; it's meticulously maintained by the municipality. Moreover, its convenient proximity to the city center allows for a leisurely stroll. Whether you explore it in the summer or winter, its charm remains captivating. You'll find serene mosques for prayer, and charming riverside cafes, all adding to the allure of this remarkable destination.

This castle, built in 1152 by vizier Firuz Akay by the order of Sultan Melik İzzeddin during the Saltuklu Principality, is a monument not only made of stone and brick, but also bearing the traces of history and emotions. Here are my feelings and thoughts while wandering around this fascinating building: When I started to tour the castle step by step, I was impressed by the atmosphere of this place intertwined with history. The solidity of its stone walls symbolized the power of time and the durability of this masterpiece created by human hands. When I walked in, I felt like ghosts of the past. All the events that took place here, all the words spoken here were felt as living memories in the marks on the walls. This castle is not just a structure, but also a personality that has witnessed the lives of many people. Saltuklu Sultan Melik Izzeddin's idea of having this castle built was perhaps a reflection of the power and magnificence of his time. Timur's destruction, III. Reconstruction by order of Murad, destruction by Shah Abbas I of Iran and subsequent repairs; all these reflected people's devotion to this castle and its historical importance. While visiting the castle, I couldn't stop myself from thinking about the flow of history. All the events that took place here and the efforts spent to repair this castle help us understand the history of humanity. People fought, repaired and rebuilt to defend this castle. This castle represents the resilience and determination of humanity. Castle walls are a place where history speaks loudly. The coldness of the stones makes this structure, which has been the silent witness of centuries, even more impressive. Walking among these stones feels like a meeting with the past. It seems like there is a story under every stone, a period of time hidden behind every wall. This castle, like time itself, is a monument that bears the traces of past experiences, and witnessing this monument was a magical experience for me.

This is free entrance for the Kars Castle. One of the beautiful castle, visit during winter, full of snow. Castle located right at the city centre, walking distance like 1km. Surrounded with other iconic attraction, such as Kumbet mosque and stone bridge and etc. Is a MUST visit when you in Kars.
Koeyaa — Google review
Wow wow wow!!! This is a must if you visit Kars. Allow 90 to 120 minutes to wander around. Take a camera and snap away. We visited in January 2022, and there was snow on the ground. There is a little tea shop at the top, but although it was open, we did not grab anything to drink/eat. It got really cold when the sun set. There are toilets available. All photos shown were taken on my phone.

Ani ocakbaşı is a historical site located 42km away from Kars, Turkey. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the remains of a ruined medieval town that was once the capital of the Kingdom of Armenia. Due to its tumultuous history, it holds significance for both Armenians and Turks. The area has been affected by strong earthquakes and conflicts, leaving only a few buildings and remnants of walls standing.
I only had soup so basing review on that, but the staff were friendly, there was a clear menu with reasonable prices and English translation. Also nice music playing. Other hot dishes available at the counter and they will say which are vegetarian.

The food was good, I don't eat much anyway. But the waiters very unhospitable. In all Turkey you are offered cay after lunch included in the price. The Turkish people from the next table got cay, I didn't get it because I am a foreigner. I wasn't even asked for cay. I was planning to come again tomorrow, but not not anymore. Search for a place with more hospitality.

Food was very good, great waiter too. Reataurant is big and was quite empty so it was lacking ambiance but it’s off season so I’m not judging

Many guides advertise this place as one of the best in town to try local specialties. Alas, no local specialties are available. Moreover, even the priced positions on the menu may not be available at the time of your visit. Nevertheless, the quality of the food and service are quite OK. So, if you aren’t scouting for local specialties, but simply looking for a hearty soup and a good old döner or kebap, don’t hesitate to come.

Kumbet Mosque, a historic monument situated on the southern side of Kars Castle and in the neighborhood of Kale C, was originally built as an Armenian-Georgian church during the Bagratuni Kingdom era. It later transformed into a mosque in 1064 and subsequently converted into a Russian Orthodox Church under Russian rule. In 1918, it once again became a mosque before being repurposed as a museum in 1964.
(Translated by Google) It was built as an Armenian-Georgian church during the period of the Armenian Bagratuni Kingdom, which ruled in and around Kars in the 10th century, and provided an opportunity for worship to the Armenians and Georgians living in this area. The church built by King Abas was completed in five years. Rather than being a place of worship, this building was built to commemorate the 12 Apostles, who have great sanctity for Christianity. Later, in 1064, this church in the region came under Muslim rule and was converted into a mosque and named Kümbet Mosque.[2] When the region came under Russian rule, the mosque was converted into a Russian Orthodox church, and when it came under Turkish rule in 1918, it was turned into a mosque again.[3] In 1964, it was converted into a museum and historical artifacts obtained from the excavations in Kars began to be exhibited here. This old place of worship, also known as Kars Museum, continued this function until 1981. It has been used as a mosque since 1993.[4 (Original) 10. yüzyılda Kars ve civarında hüküm sürmüş Ermeni Bagratuni Krallığı döneminde bir Ermeni-Gürcü kilisesi olarak inşa edilmiştir, bu civarda yaşayan Ermenilere ve Gürcülere ibadet imkânı sağlamıştır.

Located in the Kale İçi neighborhood at the southern foot of Kars Castle, the Church of the Holy Apostles is one of the city's Armenian churches. It was built by King Abbas during the Bagratid Kingdom between 932 and 937 AD. The church has a central plan, resembling a four-leaf cloverleaf, with a right-angled space widened by four niches. The Kars Peynir Müzesi, also known as the Kars Cheese Museum, is a unique and compact private museum located in the cool depths of a former bastion. The museum celebrates the cheesy heritage of Kars, showcasing a special type of cheese called Kars Gravyer that attracts Turkish tourists from all over the country. The exposition is concise and media-rich, providing an enjoyable balance for visitors. While most of the information is presented in Turkish, there are English translations available.
Kars Cheese Museum in northeastern Turkey attracts great attention from locals and foreign tourists as it is 18th cheese museum in the world and the first in Turkey. When you go inside, they explain, especially Kars' cheeses, from its production to the sale process. There is a plateau section, a milking area and an endemic plant section. They have sections where they introduce Ottoman houses and Russian buildings. In the museum, tools used in making cheese such as storage tanks, gruyere cooking apparatuses, casks for yeast, and salt molds have also been put on display while cheesemaking is animated as well. They include the history representations of Kars Station, Kars' vegetation, Ankara Gazi Station, gruyere production hall, cheese hall, Kars' houses, chef's working station and workshop areas. WC facilities. Entrance 50 TL

It’s a very nice museum for the city of Kars but some of the videos at the museum were not available to watch which made me wonder why as that is a huge part of the museum experience. In addition to this, beware of the museum staff at the gift shop as they are quite rude against people that are visiting. I wouldn’t recommend buying anything from there, you can buy cheese etc. from the locals in the area or Kars city center.
Dilara A — Google review
It was really good there was a lot of information about kars's vegetation to cheese making the only bad thing was they didn't let us taste the cheese we wanted to buy so minus 1 star for that

Kars is so much more interesting to spend time in this museum! İt's a new building with interesting design and 0 level contents of last century style, while they don't show any historical artifacts or instruments, they write very strange explanations as to history of cheese.

One of the interesting Müze you need to visit while you at Kars. Unfortunately most of all they use only Turkish, they welcome us and with the group they explained everything. Entrance is 40TL with credit card ONLY. They have one souvenir store selling like bag, t-shirt, mug, and etc, of course they do sell cheese as well. Unfortunately they did not host the cheese tasting. The things they do and the building itself is amazing.
Koeyaa — Google review
Very interesting museum. I love the fact is hosted in a historical bastion. Well designed, nice layout, there is a shop to buy cheese at the end. The only problem is that you have to buy without knowing the taste of each cheese so we decided better not to do it. I think the Museum could benefit from offering a tasting at the end, maybe offering an option to buy a platter where you could try a piece of each cheese.
JR S — Google review
It's a compact quirky private museum, based in cool depths of a former bastion - the history of which is laid out as you enter. The exposition is concise and media-rich, a pleasant balance in my view. Translation into English is machine, so a bit rough around the corners, but the gist comes through, and it's equal to the amount of Turkish text, which is a treat. The whole thing takes about 30min, if you take your time, and costs ~1.5€, which I didn't grudge in the end. Light, amusing immersion into the history of cheesemaking in the region. Thumbs up!
Dan M — Google review
Hilarious fun. Quite a few errors in the exhibit but hey it's cheese. When we went to buy some cheese afterwards there just didn't seem to be any staff. Gave up. What they had on sale seemed massive and probably not what tourists travelling light want.

Kafkas Cephesi Harp Tarihi Müzesi is a museum dedicated to the wars and Turkish fighters in the region, situated on the border between nations. The exhibitions are meticulously designed to immerse visitors in the challenging historical periods. While most displays have English narratives, some information remains untranslated. The museum is housed in an old Ottoman bastion and offers a wealth of historical insights. Visitors can expect informative presentations from staff at the front desk.
A very informative and well done museum. It has a ton to see inside and learn about! The staff at the front desk gave a great presentation and overview of why this place was built and other important facts! Would recommend on your trip to Kars. If you do not speak Turkish, I would have google translate up to help you understand everything. There are very limited translations.

A definite must see when you are in Kars. Tribute to all the Turkish soldiers who lost their lives during Sarikamis war with Russians. There is a section to commemorate Hungarian soldiers who fought in the eastern front with Russia as well. You feel goosebumps when you’re reading letters of soldiers.
Tolga D — Google review
I recently visited the Kafkas Cephesi Harp Tarihi Müzesi, and while it is undoubtedly a place of great historical significance, my experience was somewhat mixed. The museum offers a deep dive into a specific chapter of history, but it lacks inclusivity in terms of language and perspective. Firstly, the majority of the information is presented exclusively in Turkish, with very few English translations available. This makes it difficult for non-Turkish speakers to fully grasp the historical context and appreciate the exhibits. For a museum of this importance, it would be beneficial to provide more comprehensive multilingual support. One of the highlights of the museum is its atmospheric recreations, including wax figures and detailed displays that effectively convey the harsh realities of war. However, it’s important to note that the museum primarily presents one side of the conflict, which might leave visitors with an incomplete understanding of the events. A more balanced presentation that acknowledges the perspectives of all parties involved would provide a fuller picture of this historical period. Another disappointment was that we were unable to enter the historical train carriage, which was closed during our visit. This was particularly frustrating as it is one of the museum’s key attractions. Additionally, while the museum is well-curated, it is relatively small and might not meet the expectations of those looking for a larger or more varied collection of war artifacts. In summary, Kafkas Cephesi Harp Tarihi Müzesi is a significant place to visit, especially for those interested in Turkish military history. However, the lack of English translations and the limited perspective presented might detract from the overall experience for international visitors.

Nice little museum in an old Ottoman bastion. Unfortunately only part of the documentation is translated into English such that foreign visitors miss out on much of the information on the historical context. It’s a bit out of the centre and the neighbourhood isn’t particularly interesting, so you don’t miss much by taking a cab. The entry fee is EUR 3. And note that they close quite early.

A very modern museum. A must-see one. Mirror room is the symbolizes of eternity of the soldiers who died in the war. Letters of soldiers, families of soldiers are very touching. There is a semi transparent glass room where you can see the walking soldiers only if you take a photo with your phone or camera, but not with your eyes..

I really enjoyed this compact museum. Loved the ‘infinity’ set up of the soldiers slippers and the very life like scenarios of field hospital, camp kitchen, soldiers living quarters etc. Not easy to find but well worth the effort.

(Translated by Google) The Evliya Mosque was commissioned in 1579 by Lala Mustafa Pasha in memory of the Khorasan saint Abu'l Hasan Harakani, adding a mystical atmosphere to the historical fabric of Kars. Its most authentically preserved feature is its single minaret, with a square base and cylindrical body; it is a fine example of Ottoman stonework. Restorations carried out between 1996 and 2004 significantly altered the mosque's architectural plan; although interior elements such as the mihrab and pulpit were renovated, the spiritual atmosphere remains. The adjacent Evliya Hazretleri Mausoleum and fountain area enhance its appeal for prayer and pilgrimage. Visitors appreciate the mosque's simple yet peaceful atmosphere and the unique texture of the historic minaret. Tripadvisor highlights the emphasis on "spiritual atmosphere." While its architectural authenticity has largely been lost, it holds a significant place in Kars' cultural history. Conclusion: The Evliya Mosque offers historical depth and spiritual peace, reflecting the spiritual richness of Kars. Its authentic Ottoman stone minaret, along with its tomb and fountain, should be a short but impressive stop in the city.

Merkez Kümbet Cami, originally an Armenian-Georgian church built in the 10th century, was renamed when Kars came under Muslim rule in 1064. The building has been open for worship since 1993 and is a historical monument worth visiting. While nicely restored, it lacks much of the original church artifacts as it now functions as a mosque. Despite ongoing groundwork and missing information boards, the live history of this place makes it a must-visit.

In the city, where Islamic and Christian architectural structures are located, military and civil architecture, especially religious buildings, played an important role in the formation of the city. The baths, which are among the water structures in the city, are lined up in an orderly manner on both sides of the Kars Stream passing through Kars. Mazlum Ağa Bath, one of these structures, dates back to the 18th century. It was built in the 19th century Ottoman period bath architectural style. The bath was built on the ground in the east-west direction in Kars Central Kaleiçi District. The bath is surrounded by Kars Stream to the north, the road to the south, and neighboring parcels to the east and west. Mazlum Ağa Bath was built under the leadership of Kars Governorship in 2017 in order to bring it into conservation and cultural tourism. Under the coordination of the Culture Tourism and Infrastructure Service Union Presidency, application survey, restitution and restoration projects for repair have been prepared within the scope of the 'Project for the Protection of Historical Texture'. The restoration works, which started in 2017, were completed in three stages at the end of 2021. Mazlum Ağa Bath project-repair application and usage research was conducted based on a descriptive and applied model. By identifying historical documents and photographs of the building using descriptive and research model methods; Additionally, the findings obtained by taking existing photographs were evaluated.

It is the most prominent example of 18th-century Ottoman architecture in the city that has survived to the present day. The blind arches and niche decorations in the interior of the Mazluağa bath, which has a rectangular plan and is made of smooth cut basalt stone, are remarkable. The survey projects of the bath, which was expropriated by the Kars Municipality, have been prepared and its restorations will be carried out. (Translated by Google) It has no name or history. A historical place of worship whose interior was destroyed. Its gates are closed with stones. He was abandoned to his fate. However, as a structure, it has defied the years and survived solidly. (Original) Adı ve tarihçesi yok. İçerisi yerle yeksan edilmiş bir tarihi ibadethane. Kapıları taşlarla kapatılmış.
