The Mackay Mansion Museum, originally built in 1859 by George Hearst as the headquarters of the Gould & Curry Mining Company Office, is now a well-preserved Victorian-era mansion. The museum showcases original period furnishings, mining artifacts, and Tiffany silver. Visitors can explore the office, dining room, and upstairs residence rooms while learning about its rich history.
Went there with my wife and friend. Dawn was really well versed on the history of the area and more importantly, the building. Really awesome history lesson. The paranormal stuff was fun, she showed us pictures that had been taken in the mansion of known ghosts. The way it was presented was credible and modern (she looked up pics on her phone haha). She lets us play around and do a little light ghost hunting. We had a blast, definitely worth 14 dollars. For the record I’m a ghost skeptic and I was impressed with how Dawn made the atmosphere feel haunted and set the tone in a way that made it enjoyable to give the idea of ghosts some credence. Really great tour and a fun way of end our day in Virginia City!

The host of our tour was very knowledgeable and clearly has taken a lot of time and care with not only this house and the history it contains, but also in teaching and sharing about it. The tour was a great value, and our host was a delight! Thank you for making this experience possible!

What an amazing tour! Our tour guide was exciting and animated. He told the stories so well and they were interactive and fun! Its amazing how much history is still in this building! Its a must-see for Virginia City!!!

We had a fantastic tour of the Mackay Mansion with Dawn, and it was one of the highlights of our time in Virginia City. Dawn was incredibly knowledgeable and made the tour feel personal—she tailored it to our interests and shared so many fascinating details about John Mackay, Virginia City’s history, the strong connections to San Francisco, Hearst Castle, and much more. The mansion itself is stunning, filled with original furniture and artifacts, each with its own story connected to important figures in history. Dawn also wove in some of the spookier tales of the house, which made the experience even more memorable. We came away learning so much, and it truly felt like stepping back in time. We loved every minute of it and would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Virginia City.

The guided tour of the historic Mackay Mansion was nothing short of amazing! Our tour guide made the entire experience unforgettable—he was knowledgeable, funny, and brought the rich (and spooky!) history of the mansion to life. You can tell he loves what he does, and that energy is contagious. The mansion itself is breathtaking, from its well-preserved rooms to the beautifully kept grounds that make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. Between the fascinating stories, the hints of haunted history, and the gorgeous setting, this tour had the perfect mix of charm and chills. Highly recommend this tour if you’re in Virginia City—it’s a must-do!

Experience a journey through time with the Virginia & Truckee Railroad Company, offering historic train rides along two routes: the "Sisters in History Route" and the "Historic Route." The multimillion dollar reconstruction of this historic railroad allows visitors to ride through the original line, passing old mines and silver ore veins. Dating back to 1869, this rail line was crucial for transporting silver from the area's mines.
Educational and fun, nice people working there. A little short but enjoyable regardless. Good way to see gold hill as I couldn't get there or didn't want to in my RV.

One of the most memorable tours we have been on! We loved the explanation of everything we were seeing along the way and that the tour guide spent time to answer questions! Going through the train tunnel was unforgettable and American Flats is a beautiful place! Highly organized by a friendly group of folks! Thank you for making this memory special for us and teaching us about my home state, the Silver State!
Ryan G — Google review
Great experience in the train ride. It's a short ride of around 40 mins with a guide explaining the history and the significance. Lots to hear and see and learn. Fun experience.
Sandeep B — Google review
Nice train ride where some stories about Virginia are told. We took the 35 minute tour which runs daily every hour. It was a little bit short and you’ll have to take the same way back (no round tour).
Stefan H — Google review
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The Ride the V&T Railroad tour was shorter than I expected, and honestly felt a bit pricey for the length. That said, the experience was saved (and then some!) by our conductor. His vibrant personality, comforting voice, and deep knowledge of the history along the route made the ride engaging and memorable. If you’re looking for a quick trip through some beautiful scenery with an extra dose of charm thanks to the crew, it’s worth checking out. Just know going in that the ride itself is on the shorter side.

absolutely disgusted by this tour guide. when stopped half way I asked my four year old child if she wanted a picture. the tour guide proceeded to go on the microphone and asked who I'm talking to because "he was talking". I said I'm asking my daughter if she wanted a picture. he publicly shamed me saying he "doesn't care who I'm talking to everyone can hear me" and to be quiet. he also spent a good 5 min degrading Chinese people. my 4 year old whispered when she wanted to talk to me after this. would never go again and never recommending it
Cu. C — Google review
Such a nice train ride. We enjoyed the conductor a lot. He gives a good history of the area and has a fun sense of humor. The gift shop has a variety of goodies for all tastes. The front is a shady area to rest while you wait for the train. We will certainly be back for the holiday season to see Santa there.

The Historic Fourth Ward School Museum is a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts. Housed in a 19th-century schoolhouse, this museum offers exhibits on local history and the Comstock Lode. The building itself is a Victorian Gothic landmark and the last of its kind in the United States. Inside, visitors can explore the lively history of Virginia City, from mining technology to Mark Twain's early journalism career with Virginia City's Territorial Enterprise.
This is a must see while visiting Virginia City! So much rich history just in this one building. There was so much to read and see. My family and I love history so we had to visit. Plus this school is beautiful! I'm so glad places like this still exist! Would love to do a paranormal investigation here! 🖤👻

This is an absolute must see for anybody visiting Virginia City. The architecture is simply incredible and the man working at the information counter is a wealth of information. Going inside the classrooms is like a time capsule back to the 1800s.
Dave D — Google review
The best place in VC for a great history lesson. Covers everything from the school itself, Mark Twain & printing, mining & minerals, Comstock history, 110 years of local school alumni, and a changing exhibit that always features something very interesting. If there's only time to visit 1 place in V C for your history lesson from knowledgeable & friendly folks this is it! Not to mention the museum is housed inside an authentic historic school from 1876. The beauty of the building itself is enough reason to stop for a visit.
Barbara J — Google review
The Fourth Ward School probably does a better job than most tourist attractions in the area of actually helping you understand what life was like in Virginia City for an average person who wasn't Mark Twain or a guy who hit it rich buying a mine. While things could still be done to help visitors understand even more (for instance, I never was able to figure out why it's called the "Fourth Ward" school), this is definitely one of the more historical and less "tourist trap"-y places to visit in Virginia City.
Brady B — Google review
This school in Virginia City could school 3,000 kids from 1st grade to high school. Architecturally it is a fascinating and beautiful structure fully restored to its former glory. There are many historical timelines and displays for history buffs but the best part is your imagination and thinking about how generations past built a structure like this and educated thousands of kids with a good old fashion "get 'er done" attitude. They don't make folks like that anymore. Worth the visit.
Chuck H — Google review
A cultural landmark! Many original artifacts such as desk, geographic maps, chalkboards and more. There was a friendly staff member that was very knowledgeable of the history of the school. The visit cost $7 for adults and slightly less for children. The museum is quite large. Parking is next to the building. Parking is slightly on the small end so get there early. Great views of the valley from the parking lot.
W O — Google review
The absolute best place to delve into the history of Virginia City! The staff truly makes the visit exceptional; they're incredibly helpful and knowledgeable, elevating the experience from good to outstanding.

Piper's Opera House, originally built in 1863 and later renamed after John Piper, a prominent German immigrant in Virginia City, has been a cultural landmark since its early days. This historical opera house has been restored and now serves as a performing arts center hosting various events for all ages. From bingo nights to murder mystery productions, country dancing to cocktail mixology classes, there is something for everyone.
The opera house is always beautiful and has so much history. We saw a Comstock Christmas Carol this year and it was a wonderful production. I loved the fog effects and the snow effect and you could tell that the cast worked really hard. The scene changes with the carolers encouraged audience participation and beautifully covered the set changes. For an evening out with my family, it is always a wonderful time to go to the theater!

One of my favorite places in Northern Nevada is Virginia City. One of my favorite places in Virginia City is Pipers Opera House. Although I've been to Pipers Opera House on several occasions, I've never been asked to draw my Event Caricatures there, until this last visit. The event was AMAZING!! Imagine exchanging vows in all the glory of the late 1800's! If you're looking for a unique site for your upcoming nuptials or even an upcoming event, be sure to check out Pipers Opera House in Virginia City, Nevada! Oh, and to make your event even more memorable, invite Michael Hopkins Event Caricatures to your event!

Immerse yourself in the rich mining history of Virginia City with a visit to the Chollar Mine Tour. This iconic tour takes you through what was once the leading producer on the Comstock, offering insights into its role in extracting millions of dollars worth of gold and silver. Led by knowledgeable guides, visitors can explore deep underground, marvel at the timber frameworks supporting the mine's structure, and view historic mining equipment.
We were there with a bunch of submarine veterans from 60-70 years old. We found Andre very knowledgeable as we spoke before the tour and Rick, the tour guide gave great history and answered several questions. He helped us understand the sacrifices made during that time with that technology to remove the gold and silver from the earth for further use. I highly recommend this tour. Prepare yourself to walk slightly upgrade while bent over to get inside where you can stand for the explanations. The floor is packed mud, so just be aware. Hard hats are provided and required. You'll be glad you have one as you may bump your head on an overhead timber. Enjoy

We just got to enjoy John Tyson from our community. He was our tour guide. Definitely worth the time and money for this experience. It takes about an hour to complete. We have 6 kids. They really liked the history. GO CHECK THIS OUT!

We went to visit the Chollar Mines on a trip to Virginia City and it was a great experience. Our tour guides were very friendly and knowledgeable about the history of mining. The tour itself was very informative and insightful. We even got to go into an old mine and experience a tad of what the miners had in the past. I would definitely recommend experiencing this before it’s gone.
Julia D — Google review
Loved the experience. The guide is a veteran who's pretty knowledgeable and nice person to talk to. Going inside the mine tunnel was a unique experience. It's narrow and you need to bend to walk in.
Sandeep B — Google review
Chollar Mine Tour – A Glimpse into the Golden Age of Virginia City Recommended by locals, I made my way to the Chollar Mine, once the 5th largest mine during the 19th-century Gold Rush era. In its prime, it yielded an overwhelming amount of gold—worth millions of dollars then and easily billions in today’s value. Scattered across the grounds are authentic mining tools, giving visitors a sense of the equipment used back in the day. One highlight was the rock smasher, which the staff explained in detail. From the start, John and Gary gave me a warm welcome and patiently answered all my questions. Before we entered the mine, Gary provided a fascinating introduction to its history and operations—explaining how miners worked in 8-hour shifts, the intense conditions they faced underground, and how they coped with the heat from the geothermal groundwater. Equipped with a helmet, I followed the narrow tunnels where the ceiling is low enough to give you a bump if you’re not careful. Along the old rail tracks used for transporting minerals, Gary demonstrated the rope-and-pulley system, drilling tools, and even how miners once relied on rats and candles to test air quality inside the mine. He also pointed out the split line in the rock that marked different mining outputs, giving a vivid sense of how geologists identified the veins. To make the experience more tactile, he even handed me some clay samples from the mine, so I could literally feel the earth that once hid so much gold. Unfortunately, visitors cannot go as deep into the mine as I had hoped—I wanted to experience the underground heat myself—but for safety reasons, the tour is limited. The cave can be slippery, and you’ll often need to bend down to avoid injury. After the tour, Gary enthusiastically offered to take photos for guests, adding a personal touch to the visit. Beyond the tour itself, I learned that John now owns the mine, while Gary has written a novel that brings Virginia City’s Golden Age to life. --- Final Thoughts The Chollar Mine Tour is more than just a history lesson—it’s an immersive journey into the life of 19th-century miners. Thanks to the passion and effort of John and Gary, visitors can better appreciate the challenges, ingenuity, and culture of Virginia City’s mining heritage. ---
Scott L — Google review
This was a great tour, informative, fun, and very well done. Our tour guide was fantastic: knowledgeable, engaging, and clearly passionate about the history of the mine. He made the experience both educational and entertaining for everyone. We were impressed to learn that he has written two books on the subject, which we gladly purchased after the tour. If we visit Virginia City again, we would definitely take this tour a second time. Highly recommended!
Guelsy — Google review
Super fun tour for us. We came for the first tour, cash only spot. Tour guide and other staffers were very friendly and answered questions.
Selina — Google review
The tour guide was knowledgeable about the mine and the mining process. The experience is not really a tour. You walk about 400 feet into the mine bent over at your waste and then sit in a small room and the guide talks to you. Really not much to see. The guide was very opinionated about women and the LGBTQ+ community. Had I have known this I would have never given them my money.

Step into the Wild West at Red Dog Saloon, a historic 19th-century tavern that offers a unique experience with live music, Chicago-style pizza, cocktails, and coffee. The saloon has been period-restored to honor its Old West legacy while incorporating modern touches. Live country music adds to the lively atmosphere on weekends. Additionally, visitors can enjoy Tex-Mex cuisine at Cafe Del Rio or satisfy their sweet tooth at Barrels O Candy and Grandmas Fudge Factory nearby.
Great place for pizza, drinks and more! The service was good and the pizza was delicious! We stopped in during our V&T Railway visit from Carson City. Had a great time with another couple and like how it is set up, you order your food & pop on one side, then adult beverages from the bar. It was a neat little bar with a good food and beverage selection. Nice old west decor, Fun atmosphere and good place for people watching. Had a great time!

The Red Dog Saloon is a lively and historic spot that perfectly captures the Old West charm of Virginia City. The atmosphere is fun and full of character, with live music, great drinks, and friendly service. It’s a place where you can relax, enjoy good food, and soak in the town’s vibrant spirit. The pizza and wings are popular favorites, and the rustic décor adds to the authentic experience. It can get a bit loud and crowded at times, but that’s part of the energy that makes it special. Overall, the Red Dog Saloon is a must-visit in Virginia City a great mix of history, music, and good times.

Apparently a seminal location for the San Francisco renaissance of the 1960's, with psychedelic-rock memorabilia galore adorning the walls. The pizza slice a friend shared with me was excellent. Unfortunately, my order of fish n chips was quite middling. Great, warm staff. Ordered at window, given a pager, tho food was brought to table. Sadly this 3 night visit to VC on business was exhausting, and I did not have the opportunity to return. Will def be back for that bussin pizza, and some merch next time in the area.

Definitely gets busy and can get loud. But super food and service. Waited a few for our pizza but was super slammed. Otherwise worth the wait. We always go there when we're in virginia city at least 2-3 times in couple days.
Heather N — Google review
The food and atmosphere are great! The BBQ chicken pizza was especially tasty. They have multiple bathrooms, which is a plus, compared to other businesses in the area. The service is pretty typical of a fast casual dining experience - they’re friendly as they take your order, they deliver your food to your table, but other than that you’re on your own. Not that that’s a bad thing. The food is a little pricey, but you expect that in small, kitschy, tourist town restaurants. Our only complaint is that it takes a long time to get your food. To their credit, they have a disclaimer on their menu board that wait times will be long. Aside from that, it’s an all-around great place to eat!
Devin O — Google review
Nice, friendly and has a family feel to it. Great servers with 10 beers on tap and a area to get a good selection of food from that smelled delicious. Bathrooms were clean and there was a live band playing that was pretty good as well. We've been to most of the bars in town and this one is still our favorite.

The outdoor display showcases mining equipment and explains how mules were used for ore extraction. Inside, visitors can explore a wide range of artifacts including newspaper clippings, household goods, and maps.

Informative and quaint museum of the Comstock Gold rush mining in Virginia City. They have numerous original pieces, tons of literature, and descriptive signage (not just a non-descript, moronic blurb found in many newer museums). Staff was also very friendly.

Also the gift shop area had great things and they were all actually affordable! I spent $50 in the gift shop and $12 to get in and it was well worth! The staff was also very friendly!

They have a LOT of Everyday items from the city of Virginia from the eart seems Like they just went through these houses 150 years ago and picked up all the items and turned in the museum. The biggest gold Load was found here and all of the Mining equipment was developed here, Because this is the first place where the mines went down 2000 feet underground. Obviously the working conditions 2000 feet in the ground were crazy and they have a photos and videos about all that, which is really interesting. The admission is $5 so definitely Check out the inside of the museum

What an absolutely amazing place. Great to take photos. Great fun for the whole family, perfect little gift shop.
Nikki M — Google review
This small museum is *loaded* with mining artifacts and photos. Since mining is a huge part of why Virginia City exists, "the way it was" is an apt name for this museum. The fellow who took our money for entrance gave us a suggested route for the walk through; it's not terribly complicated (but ADHD brains might benefit from some arrows painted on the floor as a reminder). You'll find everything from examples of newspapers and maps to old apothecary items to actual mining equipment. There's a video to sit and watch, but my companions were impatient, so I didn't get to see the whole thing, and beyond that is a room displaying the equipment used to make ore into metal. My personal favorite part was the costumed dolls. Beautifully crafted dolls (the postcard I purchased calls them mannequins), about twice the size of a Barbie to give you an idea of scale, dressed in gorgeous 1800s fashions. If you like period fashion, or dolls, or both, you will love these! There were a few things displayed that I would have liked to know more about, like the "women dressed as men to visit in the mine" photo. No context was given. Were these wives? How long were the men down there, that women needed to go and visit them? Having placards giving more information for some of these items would have been awesome, otherwise it's just a collection of "stuff." Overall this was a really informative and interesting look into Virginia City's, and mining's, history.
W. W — Google review
Took off a star due to no restrooms even if paying for tour and another star for the annoying audio. You can hear the film in the theater and then they have different loop playing in the main room. Why can’t you have it playing the same audio in both places as they are all the same content. Made me dizzy. Not overly large but a lot stuffed in one place. Felt like a hoarders house but wait I think that’s how it got started. Bonus was there was a parking spot out front so we did not have to pay 10.00 to park in a lot.

The Ponderosa Mine Tour offers a 25-minute underground exploration of mine workings, showcasing tunnels, crosscuts, winzes, and over 300 pieces of antique mining equipment. Meanwhile, the Chollar Mine provides a 30-minute guided tour with a 400-foot level walk down an old mine tunnel to view original square-set timbering and silver ore. The experience costs $12 per person and does not involve descending into the mine but rather walking straight into it for about 200 feet.
exceeded my expectations - spencer was a phenomenal host. not only very knowledgeable (and hilarious for my taste) but so kind to our kids. we had 2 three-year olds with us and he tailored the tour to them, included them, and was genuinely kind. 10/10 would go back
Veronica T — Google review
Since Chollar mine has recently closed down, we decided to take this tour. One young man is apparently 100% handling it and I think he needs to look for work he actually enjoys. He handles selling tickets, putting groups together and the tour itself, so whatever he decides to do it what you get. Our tour has a group of 11 added just minutes before it was scheduled to start. Once we got inside, the first thing he said was “since this is such a large group, I’m going to skip the map part.” What?? What does the size of the group have to do with anything and why does I get less of a presentation just because he chose to have a large group? I was legitimately interested to know what I was seeing on the map in front of us and disappointed he chose to completely skip the first part of the tour. As we went forward it was obvious he knew a lot of facts, and I do appreciate a deadpan style of humor but it’s not easy to pull off effectively and he couldn’t do it. It was annoying not entertaining. I don’t recommend this tour to anyone

We came to Virginia City for a mine tour and weren't disappointed. The tour guide was friendly, knowledgeable, and a lot of fun. I highly recommend this tour. However, if you're tall, the mine isn't built for you so watch your head. If you're very tall (6'3" or more) you're going to be uncomfortable and I'd skip this tour.
Dan M — Google review
We went on this tour yesterday and it was horrible. The tour guide seemed like he was still drunk from the previous night's bender. He talked more about his failed relationship than anything in the mine. He was using profanity even though we had our 10 year old daughter with us. He also talked about how he got blackout drunk the previous Saturday night and ended up with a strange woman in his bed who he had to kick out. Do not go on this tour.
Maxine H — Google review
Our tour guide mostly discussed his irrelevant, contemporary political opinions and spoke little about the city’s history and mining. He made constant self-deprecating jokes that made everybody uncomfortable, and were wildly inappropriate for the children present. I learned nothing about the mine, as we were treated as a captive audience for his soap box. The lucky ones were in the back, who could not hear what we was saying.
Gwen M — Google review
Tour guide was revealing personal details about his wife leaving him a few days before our tour and his wish to die. While I am sorry he is in pain HE SHOULD NOT BE LEADING TOURS INTO A MINE! It was creepy and actually made us feel unsafe. This young man needs to be seeing a therapist right away!
Eleni W — Google review
Although there was a wealth of information and an interesting tour this may not be for everyone. The tour guide is a bit colorful, quirky and may not use language appropriate for young children.
Pam K — Google review
Our tour guide today was eclectic but quickly proved highly entertaining, practiced, and knowledgeable with a uniquely captivating delivery. Highly recommend this experience.

Step into the Wild West at the Bucket of Blood Saloon, a historical bar in Virginia City dating back to 1876. The vintage decor and Old West memorabilia create an authentic atmosphere, while live country music performances on weekends add to the lively ambiance. This quirky spot also hosts unique events like the Annual World Championship Outhouse Races in October, showcasing Virginia City's offbeat charm.
The Bucket of Blood Saloon in Virginia City, NV is an authentic piece of Wild West history! Stepping through those swinging doors felt like time traveling to the 1870s mining boom days. The historic wooden bar, antique decorations, and period photos create a genuinely atmospheric experience. I enjoyed a cold beer while listening to live piano music that perfectly matched the saloon's vintage vibe. The staff were friendly and shared fascinating stories about the building's colorful past. This isn't some touristy recreation - it's the real deal with genuine character and charm. A must-visit stop when exploring Virginia City's historic district!

No food, do have popcorn though. But the employees, atmosphere, products and beverages are awesome. We always load up on stuff when we go there every year. Highly recommend for price and fun.
Heather N — Google review
In my opinion, the Bucket Of Blood Saloon is a must-visit during a trip to Virginia City. Enjoy a drink, the memorabilia, and/or the view from the back window. I think you'll be glad you went.

Visited Virginia City for the Chili On The Comstock Festival. From the moment we arrived it was great. The entire festival was another of fun. The Bucket of Blood Saloon exhuded tons of charm and the people we met were very nice and friendly. Highly recommended...Thumbs up!

Great place to sit a spell! We took the V&T Railway from Carson City to Virginia City and found this gem of a saloon! The staff was very nice and attentive. The spicy bloody mary was excellent! The view out the back window was awesome! They have a good selection of food and drinks, as well as t-shirts, hoodies, slot machines, etc. Even saw a guy walking a pig outside the front door. Haha! We loved the laid back old west atmosphere and the unique decor throughout. The hanging chandeliers were exquisite. And did I mention that bloody mary? Yum! Highly recommend!
Rob V — Google review
We stopped in for a beer and learned that their Bloody Mary is the specialty of the house. Corrie was our bar tender. She made the drinks to our spiciness-liking. They were so delicious that we had a second round. The band was fantastic. I requested the song JACKSON. Free bowls of popcorn. Notice the antique jewel colored pickle jars on shelf above the liquor bottles. I highly recommend a visit to this saloon.

Drinks only for us. Bloody Mary, ice tea and beer. Free popcorn, band started and we were at the famous window table. What a great view.

Located in the Western mining town of Virginia City, Comstock Gold Mill offers visitors a glimpse into the area's rich history. The carefully preserved town exudes the spirit of the Wild West with its Victorian hotels, bars, and candy shops. The famous V&T railroad provides scenic rides along the mountain ridge. At Comstock Gold Mill, visitors can witness fully operational wooden and metal machinery used to process gold from ore to recovery.
A place not to be missed! Not just for the old machinery but for the guide’s comments and stories. It was great⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (cash only)
Bernadette D — Google review
My husband and I visited the mill yesterday and did a tour. Outlaw Dave really taught us a lot and it was truly fascinating to see the mill run and hear the history of Virginia City. Go!
Brenda H — Google review
I highly recommend this tour for anyone who likes history and/or science. The tour of the mill only takes about 30 minutes, but you learn a lot about the history of the Comstock Load and about the process of removing gold and silver ore. This information that you get on tour could easily be National Geographic or Discovery Channel special. Its that interesting!
Jœ — Google review
Outlaw Dave, the man who runs the Mill & does the tours gives you A LOT of information about not only the Gold Mill but the area's surrounding & their histories. In my opinion it's the best tour in Virginia City if you're there to learn some of the true history.
Corey C — Google review
Short opening hours, and the town (at least for me) is worth visiting in the evening. You can reach this place on foot in 5 minutes from the city.
Kinga — Google review
Really cool place but never open when they say they are. Tried to go 3 or 4 time and was never open.

Outlaw Dave will give you a good rundown on how the mill works and where to visit in the town. STAY OUT OF ABANDONED MINES in the surrounding area. 🇺🇸FLAG UP🇺🇸

Saint Mary In the Mountains, erected in 1870, is a prominent Catholic church in Nevada and still operates today. Visitors can explore its interior and a free museum showcasing Virginia City's history. The church's stunning architecture features beautiful woodwork and stained glass windows. A knowledgeable guide offers insightful tours, while the basement museum displays old photos and memorabilia. The church's timeless beauty makes it a must-visit for history enthusiasts and architecture admirers alike.
Beautiful church! I didn't know it was there until I seen it. I love old churches and this one is definitely worth seeing if you love them too. It has beautiful stained glass windows inside too. There is a small gift shop inside if you want to buy a couple of trinkets and help donate to it.
Varinia P — Google review
Nice well kept church with lots of history. The man at the gift shop Was very knowledgeable. Quite a lot to see in the basement as well.
Chris E — Google review
The care taker ( I think Michael) was so patient even though he was locking up for the night. My son and I enjoyed the special time in this beautiful church. We were able to buy couple candles and some special momentos for my family and friends. We also got some memorable pictures taken. Highly recommend seeing this church... Very special and historical
Celine M — Google review
Very beautiful and historic Catholic Church in Virginia City. They have a museum and gift shop for more information.
Felipe V — Google review
Rating this purely as a tourist attraction. I have never been to one of their services. This beautiful old Catholic church is full of history and is open to the public for you to go around and observe. There is a small gift shop just inside and to the right. There is also a museum on the lower floor, which is free. However, be aware that the museum has much more to do with Catholicism, and even some seemingly random other things, than it does with the history of Virginia City, specifically.

Beautiful Church. KNOWN AS THE "BONANZA CHURCH" BECAUSE OF THE RICH SILVER MINES OF THE LAST CENTURY, THIS MOTHER CHURCH OF THE COMSTOCK LODE TRACES ITS HISTORY TO 1858 WHEN REV. JOSEPH GALLAGHER (1821-87) OFFERED THE FIRST MASS IN NEVADA. HIS BROTHER, REV. HUGH P. GALLAGHER (1815-82), OPENED THE FIRST CATHOLIC CHURCH IN VIRGINIA CITY IN 1860. DESTROYED BY THE WINDS OF THE FOLLOWING WINTER, THIS CHURCH WAS REPLACED IN 1864 WHEN REV. PATRICK MANOGUE (1831-95) ERECTED A NEW CHURCH A BLOCK AWAY FROM HERE. THE PRESENT CHURCH, ORIGINALLY BUILT IN 1868, WAS SERIOUSLY DAMAGED IN THE GREAT FIRE OF 1875 BUT REBUILT IN 1876. TODAY ST. MARY'S STANDS HERE AS A TREASURE OF THE OLD WEST AND IS NOW RECOGNIZED AS A NATIONAL CATHOLIC HISTORICAL SITE.
Daniel R — Google review
It was a beautiful place to visit and see the museum with the saints and robes the priests wore and golden cups they drank from. Definitely a must see if you visit Virginia City.
Christina Z — Google review
Beautiful Church beautifully located you can not asked for more seeing all the views behind. Also, all the interior all the woodwork such as benches rails, divisions pillars and sealing are absolutely beautiful plus all the stain glass windos amazing. Also, a person at the church store is a very nice, pleasant man can share some information about the town.

The Washoe Club Museum & Saloon is a historic establishment dating back to 1862, offering visitors a glimpse into the past with its original chandeliers and luxurious accommodations that once attracted mining magnates during the Gold Rush. This storied saloon in Virginia City also houses a history museum featuring exhibits and offers ghost tours, drawing in enthusiasts from around the world.
So Virginia City has become a bit of a tourist trap with loads of over the top schlock and overpriced everything. If you like that kind of thing - fantastic! I don't so much. However, if you find yourself there, Washoe Club is the bright spot. Tours are reasonably priced, the folks who run this historical business are incredibly lovely and the tour guide is phenomenal. These folks worked with me ahead of time to move my tour date tickets three times for various reasons and when I walked in, greeted me by name! That's impressive. The tour guide was not only personable but had a deep knowledge of local history and how the club impacted national events. If you're in it only for the paranormal, he's got you covered there too! Truly enjoyed the time at the OWC!

Drinks in the bar are phenomenal & strong $1 drink discount with museum tour, it’s haunted. Went inside and old morgue, creepy and weirdly chilly. The tour is $10 and well worth it!! Staff is amazing and friendly!!

Fun tour of the haunted house. We met out front and went through 3 stories of spookyness. Great bar on the first floor. Neat museum too. Mortisha was there when I went which made it better. Spooky
Don B — Google review
I’ve been on several really good ghost tours in San Francisco, so I kinda knew what to expect during a tour. However, I was amazed by the history of the Washoe Club and of the paranormal activity described by our tour guide as we walked through the rooms. I must say that the spookiest area to me was the “Crypt.” The oddity was the spiral staircase that wound its way to the top floor. Back in the day, only the wealthy had access to the top via this staircase. Apparently there are several ghosts that frequent this area, although I didn’t see any. There were a lot of things covered in 45 minutes but I felt good about the tour and would recommend it. I’m now ready for the overnight lock-in.🫣

First time visiting the Washoe Club. This place is amazing! My family and I are paranormal investigators and have been wanting to visit for quite some time. We went on the tour and got to go up into the millionaire's Club. Our tour guide was so friendly and had so much knowledge the history of this building. I was even lucky enough to capture multiple orbs in my pictures. My husband and I plan on going back in October for our anniversary and my birthday and doing the overnight tour, I can't wait! 🖤

Great place to wet your whistle and do a ghost tour while in Virginia city. We've been here several times and love the charm of this bar and the city. On the ghost tour they take to upstairs to check out the mostly empty and storage areas with past ghost encounters. The tour guide was really good and have is plenty of stories as well as his personal experiences. It was a lot of fun!

We had a great time. Rented an EMF meter and ours was very active. I've been through the tour several times before. However, this is the first time ive experienced activity. I was taped on my shoulder and my friend had her hair brushed from her face. We will be back.

The Cobb Mansion Bed and Breakfast in Virginia City offers a historic and elegant stay in one of the city's oldest original buildings. The 1876-built, three-story mansion is beautifully restored with fanciful Victorian style, period furnishings, and antique opulence. Guests can enjoy delightful old-school rooms with clawfoot bathtubs and sweeping mountain vistas. The warm hospitality of the host adds to the charm of this B&B, providing a dreamy experience for guests.
The Cobb Mansion B&B is a wonderful place to stay! Connie and Kelly are such gracious hosts. Breakfast is delicious - a great way to start your day! The rooms (and house) are appointed nicely. You feel comfortable the moment you step into this beautiful B&B. A must if you visit Virginia City and want a really nice experience.
Maureen S — Google review
The room was awsome with its own bathroom and a door to a back porch. Full of antiques . The food was superb and exquisitely presented. Walking distance to downtown. A new favorite place to stay.
Cynthia K — Google review
Absolutely a treat. My then-fiancé-now-wonderful-wifey got married here recently. I had no idea what to expect, I had only heard from people close to me that it "was a really gorgeous house" and, to say the least, that was an understatement. Connie is a total peach and made our experience at Cobb Mansion a complete dream. The ceremony was perfect, we didn't have to worry about a single thing. We got to enjoy the Harris Suite and it made the whole journey just that much more special. This house, with all of the city's rich history adorning the walls, is amazing. AND we were treated to a breakfast in the morning which blew my mind, I was not expecting anything like that at all. Thank you, Connie, thank you everyone and anyone at Cobb Mansion. And thank you, little black kitty, who got to be my new friend over coffee and a cherry turnover. We look forward to our next visit to Virginia City and we hope there might be a room available for us at this magical place.

Connie is an absolutely wonderful host. My wife and I stayed in the Harris Suite. The room has so many antiques and oddities, beautiful bay windows that have a great view of the mountains in the distance. This place has so much warmth and character, and is just a quick walk away from the bustling downtown strip. Connie has great recommendations for what to see and do in Virginia City and provides a great breakfast and coffee. We will be back!

My husband Peter and I had the pleasure of staying at the Cobb Mansion last November. It was wonderful and magical, taking us back in time! Connie the owner is gracious and lovely attending to our every need. We woke to wild horses in the yard, we were able to feed them apples from her tree! We will go back and I wouldn't dream if staying anywhere else!
