The National Museum and House of Culture, established in 1934, is a significant attraction in Dar-es-Salaam. It showcases the history of Tanzania and its people, featuring famous fossil discoveries by Louis Leakey from Olduvai Gorge and historical displays on regional civilizations, the slave trade, and colonial periods. The museum also houses an ethnographic collection providing insights into Tanzania's past and diverse cultures.
The Tanzania National Museum and House of Culture is a treasure trove of history and heritage. My visit was a truly enriching experience—wandering through its galleries felt like traveling through time. I was lucky to have a guided tour, which brought the stories behind the artifacts to life with so much clarity and passion. From displays on human evolution and colonial history to the celebration of Tanzanian art, music, and culture, every section had something that sparked curiosity. The atmosphere was welcoming, and the layout made exploring easy and enjoyable. It’s definitely a spot that offers both education and inspiration, and I’d highly recommend it to anyone visiting Dar es Salaam.

It is a great place to see the history of Tanzania. Sadly, they are not preserving the historical things better. The beautiful cars, monuments to US bombing and other artefacts are falling apart and unkempt. With repairs, attention to cleaning, direction signs, background music etc this place could be a hit.

If you want to see a little bit about history of Tanzania, this museum is best choice for a city tour in Dar es salaam.

This museum offers visitors the chance to first explore human progress through evolution and then move on to the history of Tanzania. You can see the bones of extinct animals as well as traces of early human beings. However, the building itself is quite old and not well maintained.

Historical landmark
The Askari Monument in Dar es Salaam is a bronze statue erected to honor the local soldiers who fought alongside the British Carrier Corps in World War I. It was unveiled in November 1927 as a tribute to the native African troops and carriers who played crucial roles during the war. The monument stands at the central roundabout at Samora Avenue, serving as a poignant reminder of those who fought and died for their kings and country.
The Askari Monument is a well-known historical landmark in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. It was unveiled in 1927 and stands as a tribute to the African soldiers, known as "askaris," who fought as part of the British Carrier Corps in World War I. The monument features a bronze statue of a soldier in uniform, holding a rifle with its bayonet pointed downwards. The soldier is depicted in a marching stance, symbolizing the bravery and sacrifice of the askaris. The base of the monument is inscribed with a dedication in both English and Swahili, honoring the African troops who served and fell during the war. The Askari Monument is an important piece of Tanzanian history and a symbol of the contributions of African soldiers in global conflicts.

The visit on your way to anything, was no payment to enter. It is a small monument. nicely taken care of. a bit dangerous as the traffic circle is very busy. focus on the traffic and not taking photos till in a safe zone. Nice place to take photos. Worth researching what you are visiting.

Catholic church
Kanisa Kuu la Mt. Yosefu (St. Joseph Cathedral Dar es Salaam) is a stunning neo-gothic church located on the waterfront of Dar es Salaam, standing as a testament to Tanzania's history as a German colony. Built by German missionaries in 1897, this Roman Catholic cathedral boasts remarkable features such as stained glass windows, a shingled spire, and vaulted interior. The original German inscriptions and artwork add to its historical significance.
A remarkable landmark in the busy port area. A place to get calm shelter in the dynamic world around. Great architectural solution.

Nestled in the heart of the old city of Dar Es Salaam, you'll find a stunning Catholic Church, a hidden gem that has stood the test of time since its construction around 1903. With its charming architecture and rich history, this church is not just a place of worship but a captivating glimpse into the past, inviting visitors to explore its serene beauty and heritage.
Oriol R — Google review
This church is quite beautiful. It is still used for worship and you can walk in and see it . There is no entrance, it’s also right next to the road , opposite the Zanzibar ferry station

I had the blessing of attending 2025 Easter Sunday mass at this beautiful cathedral! In recent years, interesting contemporary neon lights (yes, neon!) have been added to it's Gothic historical architectural history; view photo. Mass is offered in both Swahili and English several time a day. All accompanied with an uplifting choir and upbeat music. If you have the opportunity, this is a lovely experience! Stumbled upon this Catholic church while having a wee wander along the waterfront (almost). It was in the middle of the afternoon on a weekday, but there seemed to be a service in progress. Apart from the local faithful of whom there were quite a few, there were a couple of tourists. The inside is well lit and very airy. Beautiful, peaceful place to have a quiet moment to yourself and meditate 🙏 A place to recommend for anyone in the area... 👍👍👍👍👍
Alexander F — Google review
It was a fabulous experience to visit this church that is so soothing and serene. Especially compared to the chaos of the Ferry terminal area just outside. The church is beautiful both artistically and in its positive energy. The nuns who were constantly cleaning the place, were so helpful, kind and welcoming. Such a difference from the superciliously rude lady at the Lutheran church who shouted me out of the church. I was able to visit in silence, pray in peace inside the church and the 2 open air chapels outside too (Blessed Eucharist & St Joseph).

Botanical garden
The Botanical Garden in Dar es Salaam was established in 1893 by Professor Stuhlman and served as a testing ground for various plantation crops and tree species. The garden boasts a diverse array of indigenous and exotic plants, including purple bougainvillea, blue jacaranda, crimson flame trees, and red hibiscus. Despite facing the threat of construction encroachment, the tranquil garden remains an enchanting spot with pathways lined by vibrant flora.
An amazing food experience in Nairobi, we order different appetizer and food and enjoyed all. Absolutely fresh and yummy. But the drink cocktails and mixes didnt satisfy us and we were expecting a better taste of mix. These is a DJ playing live there as well. Each last friend of month they also have party at end of night. Try to reserve for weekends to ensure we have your table and seats
Ashkan D — Google review
Unfortunately a scam. The garden is interesting even though there is no information but it looks neglected to some extent. If you download the app PictureThis it will show you in detail what kind of tree it is and give you more information. There are no flowers. Also keep in mind that the trees can be found elsewhere in Dar along the roads, in restaurant gardens etc. Entrance is free but the employee tried to rip me off by saying that I had to pay 20k shillings, and when I refused she lowered the fee to 10k and eventually 5k. I do think that 5k is a fair price, especially to make the place more lovely (if it doesn’t go in their own pocket, which is still understandable seen the minimum wage). However, because of the scam tactic I was turned off and left.

I love this spot! It’s located in the heart of Dar es Salaam. It has the potential to be come a tourist hot spot. It needs some funding to give it a face lift. Could be used as a recreational and educational center for the community. I learned so much about the trees and plants that are native to Tanz. Lots of potential here. Don’t let it go to waste.
Maggy F — Google review
It is not established at all. $10 per visitor. They are in need of help. it is more a natural park instead. You can see everything you need to in a drive by. There are some interesting trees. There also seems to be cranes.
Muhammed O — Google review
Pretty tired (botanical) garden and associated buildings, originally set up by the German colonisers in 1893. It is more or less abandoned although, fortunately, some specimens took root before being neglected. Upon entering a 'guide' will engage in conversation with you as he shows you around the various indigenous and non-indigenous trees and shrubs such as mahogany, royal palm, ebony, teak, ylang-ylang, etc. I did find the abandoned greenhouse interesting, with a bit of imagination, and it was a nice enough, informative enough wander for 30 mins or so. Peacocks roam freely, including taking their chances on the road outside, as they look for palm nuts to eat. Guide asks for Tsh5,000.....I paid him less, the "tour" wasn't great.
Agberolistic — Google review
This garden has so much potential but it appears to have been neglected and not funded for years. Nonetheless its a nice for a quick stroll through or to sit and relax - its very quiet and peaceful.

More of a park than a botanical garden. Some nice specimens of trees. Nice shady spot to hang out, if it weren’t for the mosquitoes!

Nestled in the heart of Dar es Salaam, the Old Boma stands as a testament to the city's rich history. Commissioned by Sultan Majid bin Said and completed between 1866 and 1867, this remarkable structure is the oldest surviving building in the area. Originally built to host visitors of the Sultan, who resided nearby, it features stunning coral walls and intricately carved wooden interiors sourced from Zanzibar.
This was my second visit to the Dar Museum of Architecture ,DARCH , and it's a great little hidden gem. You can see pictures and read about the brief history of Dar. The entire exhibit is also available as a book they sale which makes for a great coffee table book. It's a short 30 minute stop off next to the Azam ferry so if you arrive to the ferry early go check it out.

Had a lovely experience at the oldest building in Dar Es Salaam ❤️ Relaxed and had a beer and light lunch. Definitely a place you need to visit when in Town. Friendly staff...nice service .good food. Great value for money. AMAZING VIEWS 🤩 See for yourself ☺️ I would highly recommend this hidden gem. It sticks out from the tall architecture that surrounds it since it's only a few storeys high, but the history that is the old Boma lives on to this day and I hope for hundreds of years to come...❤️
Angela N — Google review
Old Boma is conveniently located by the Zanzibar ferry terminal and we dropped in after our ferry docked. It was difficult to navigate to as there are major roadworks happening outside and so we entered via the rear gardens, where people are seated eating - seeming to be from local businesses. After asking, a waitress took us into the old building - apparently the sultan's former guest house (his actual house had been demolished nearby to make way for the towering Johari hotel. Once we reached the roof garden, unfortunately they only had white rice, which we ordered with barbecued chicken. The rice was ok, served with some rather bland beans, although the chicken was really good and so we ordered another portion, that was not quite so good and the cold chips it was served with pretty poor - the food being run up the stairs from the kitchen in the garden below. It does serve beer, and I enjoyed a Safari. There are nice views from the roof.
Agberolistic — Google review
Beautifully restored, and one of Dar's few old buildings you can also see from the inside. Inside there is a permanent exhibition on the history of Dar whixh is very thorough and insightful, but also remains accessible to this not familiar with Tanzania's history. They also sell some nice postcards of the city. Don't forget to ask whether you can visit their gorgeous rooftop (which can also be rented as a venue for parties). In short: must see for those visiting Dar. For those only passing through on their way to Zanzibar a perfect thing to do while waiting for the ferry, as it is just across from the ferry terminal.

The building is fantastic and off course it deserves a visit. My wife and I had a coffee in the cafeteria in the roof. There where you can enjoy the view and the music. The waiter was very kind the place all in all was fantastic yet the only thing that the coffee machine was broken so we couldn't have our cappuccino and 🤦‍♂️so we ordered the African coffee, I mean how it comes that in a fascinating place like that you don't fix the issue immediately! Anyway, I strongly recommend this place , at least for a visit 😘 The guy who works in the reception was helpful and polite. We bought a souvenir from the shop , yet we couldn't see the exhibition because we were there after 17h00 so it was close.

Dar es Salaam State House, also known as Ikulu, has a rich history dating back to the late 1800s when it served as the residence of the German Governor. Following World War I, the British extensively damaged the building, leading to its reconstruction in 1922. Notable architectural features added during this time include scalloped upper-story arches and a crenelated parapet.
The Great ideas and agreements with the results of development of nation and citizens are formulated, the annex is full of wisdom, unity, solidarity, sovereignty it lay down the further achievement of country and citizens, it is full of organization that are working together to ensure proper utilization of resources, well accountable and transparent leadership is very stable in this Annex.

Located about 10 kilometers north of the city center, Makumbusho/ Village Museum in Mikocheni showcases traditional dwellings from Tanzania's 120 ethnic groups. Spread across 15 acres, visitors can explore replicas of tribal homesteads and observe local artists demonstrating traditional carving, painting, and weaving skills. The museum also hosts Ngoma and tribal dances as well as other cultural activities.
It was a very educational tour. We had a guide who took us around and guided us through the different traditions and houses built back then in Tanzanian villages. The tour ends with a performance from a dance group. It was well worth the visit.

I didn’t expect the museum to be in such good condition. The building looks as if it was constructed just a month ago, and the paths around the village are well maintained. However, the informational boards all need to be renewed, and the ticket counter definitely needs a printer. I was surprised they're still trying to charge the entrance fee in USD.

It’s a unique museum that introduces visitors to Tanzanian tribes and their way of life. You can see different types of traditional tribal houses, and with the help of a local guide, you can learn more detailed information about them. However, one thing to be aware of is that people often expect payment for almost everything, which is a common experience in Africa.

--- Visiting Kijiji cha MAKUMBUSHO in Tanzania was an unforgettable experience, and it left a lasting impression on me. The rich culture, history, and the warmth of the people were simply remarkable. During my time there, I had the privilege of learning about the Wahehe tribe, and I have to say, from my observations, they were by far the most organized tribe in the region. The Wahehe’s history of resilience and leadership is evident in the way they carry themselves today. The way they’ve preserved their traditions, from farming techniques to their social structures, speaks to a deep sense of unity and planning. I was truly moved by how meticulously they manage their community, passing down essential knowledge from one generation to the next with such pride. One of the things that stood out to me was how they balance modern life with the wisdom of their ancestors. Whether it was the structured way in which they organized festivals, or the communal efforts in maintaining their village, there was a sense of cohesion and purpose in everything they did. I couldn't help but admire their respect for history and how they’ve successfully integrated their traditions with the modern world. The Kijiji cha MAKUMBUSHO experience gave me not only an appreciation for the Wahehe people but also a deeper understanding of how cultural heritage can be preserved and celebrated in the most organized, thoughtful ways. I left with a greater respect for the Wahehe tribe and a genuine sense of connection to the history that thrives in this incredible community. ---

Not a very hot spot to visit in Tanzania, an old museum with mostly pictures not art works or old objects. Majority of the halls are just filled with pictures of Politicians and history of Tanzania and America friendship. There are 4 old cars, 2 Rolls Royce and another Mercedes Benz belonging to government showcased in the open area. In another corner in open area is the memorial of US embassy bombing thats interesting to read the story. I was expecting to a section for Tanzania wildlife, tribal life and evolution of human in Africa that you unfortunately cant find any related topic regarding this there.

Awesome place for a night out with live music bands and a lot of cafes/bars, tourists from across the world, a great view and souvenir shopping as well. For shopping you can buy clothes, fridge magnets, wood work, paintings, hats, necklace, t-shirts, showpieces etc This place is behind the slipway hotel and crowded at night, so better grab your seats otherwise it's a long long wait or maybe you wont even get a place to sit. And yes do order your food in time as these cafes run out of food in no time but u will still get your beer. Cheers

It has one of the best views of the harbour. You could see everything happening down below. The rooms are clean, neat and offer a beautiful view of the city. Stayed in an Airbnb and immediately fell in love with the place.

The Slow Leopard is a casual hostel in Tanzania that offers basic accommodations with a balcony, a restaurant/bar, and complimentary breakfast. It's known for its super relaxed and laid-back atmosphere, making it the perfect spot for sports enthusiasts to gather and watch games while enjoying delicious burgers, finger foods, and reasonably priced beer. In the evenings, this venue transforms into a lively hotspot with great music when there are no sporting events.
Finally, a place where the owner knows what he’s doing! (Sorry, I had to say this after a year of traveling…) Staying at Slow Leopard feels like finding a temporary home amidst all the bumpy travels. The hostel is clean (though the showers could be cleaned more often, as they get dirty quickly), the included breakfast is tasty, and the team is generally very pleasant and helpful. There’s also a laundry area, which makes travelers’ lives much easier—you only realize how sacred proper laundry is after traveling for so long! The vibe around is cool and it feels good to chill around. The best part was how the owner, despite being busy with all his establishments, still takes the time to genuinely help guests (even remotely) and share so much. That’s something truly valuable and shows that he runs this business out of pure passion. There are two other hostels in the same group—we also stayed at the one in Kilwa, and it was a beautiful experience!

Very helpful staff, nice atmosphere, easy to meet people, a real hostel, filter water tap - big plus! Rooms are a little small for the amount of beds, a little smelly in the rooms, no WiFi in the room, nice to have the mosquito nets sprayed and AC, overall quite clean

Went there to do some work and study , The vibe was calm and quiet . Soft music was playing , and the service was quick and the servers were polite. Definitely good for a day out of the office. The coffee was great and the food was okay.. Definitely worth my day

Lovely place to stay. Paid 35,000 for a bed in a 10-person mixed room. You may find there are cheaper places to stay that are more central to Dar es Salaam, however it was super relaxing here with many fellow backpackers who are easy to get along with. Food is good, although also a little pricy. Overall, would recommend if you're looking for a relaxing stay in-between your travels.

Overall, it's a bad experience. The staff are friendly and helpful, maybe that's the only plus. The room is extremely hot in the night so that you couldn't even sleep. l waited an hour for breakfast. Maybe because the low season. PS. The place they recommend me for exchange gave me less change than expected. What a shame.

Best hostel in Dar! The staff are so kind and helpful, and it’s a great place to meet other travelers. Free breakfast is delicious, and the rooms are clean and beds are comfortable!

Staff is helpful and friendly but I wouldn’t stay here on a Friday or Saturday night as its more a bar/night club so sleeping is not really possible. Great to visit for a drink but not to stay for me, but maybe the younger crowd won’t mind pumping beats till late

Visitors can explore well-known brands like Puma and Adidas at the GSM Shoe Express store or indulge in delicious meals from various food stalls and restaurants located nearby. The mall also features essential services such as banks with ATM facilities and mobile service shops for added convenience.
Mlimani City is one of Dar es Salaam’s largest and most popular shopping malls, offering a diverse mix of retail stores, dining options, and entertainment facilities. It features international and local brands, a spacious food court, and a cinema, making it a top destination for shopping, leisure, and family outings. Its convenient location and ample parking ensure a seamless shopping experience.
IMMANUEL H — Google review
Mlimani City is the best and most convenient shopping mall in Dar es Salaam. It has everything you need in one place — supermarkets, clothing stores, electronics shops, restaurants, banks, and even a cinema. The layout is spacious, clean, and easy to navigate, making shopping comfortable even on weekends. The mall is air-conditioned and well-maintained, with good security and plenty of parking space. The staff at most shops are polite and helpful, and prices are reasonable for the city. The food court offers a nice variety of local and international options — perfect for a quick meal or coffee break. It’s also a great place for families, with areas for kids and a safe environment. Whether you need groceries, a new phone, or just a relaxing afternoon, Mlimani City is always a reliable choice. Highly recommended for both locals and visitors who want a modern shopping experience in Dar es Salaam!
黄芊 — Google review
Visiting Mlimani City Shopping Mall was an experience that blended modern convenience with a touch of Tanzanian vibrance. Located along Sam Nujoma Road in the bustling city of Dar es Salaam, the mall stood out with its spacious layout and clean, well-maintained environment. As I entered, I was immediately greeted by the cool air conditioning — a welcome contrast from the city’s tropical heat. The mall was buzzing with life: families shopping, students grabbing snacks, and professionals moving between shops. Shops and Variety One of the things I appreciated the most was the variety of stores. From well-known clothing brands like Mr. Price and LC Waikiki to electronics shops selling phones, laptops, and accessories, there was a bit of everything. I took my time exploring some local boutiques too, which offered unique Tanzanian fashion pieces that you wouldn’t find in typical malls abroad. There was also a Shoprite supermarket, which was incredibly convenient. It had a wide selection of groceries — both local and imported — and the prices were fair. Food Court & Restaurants After walking around, I stopped by the food court. It had multiple options: pizza, chicken, local dishes, burgers — you name it. I tried some nyama choma with chips, served fresh and flavorful. While eating, I noticed how relaxed the vibe was — people laughing, kids playing, and background music playing softly. Entertainment & Services For entertainment, there’s a cinema inside the mall which shows both local and international films. I didn’t get the chance to watch a movie, but the posters looked promising. I also passed by a few bank branches and ATMs, which was convenient for anyone needing quick financial services. There’s also a salon and a phone repair shop — a good example of how the mall caters to everyday needs. Cleanliness & Security The mall was clean and secure. Security guards were present at every entrance, and there were clear signs directing people where to go. The restrooms were well-maintained, which I always consider a sign of a well-managed public place. Parking and Accessibility Mlimani City has a huge parking area, and it’s easy to access via both private cars and public transport. There’s always a flow of daladalas and boda bodas outside the gate, making it very accessible. My visit to Mlimani City Shopping Mall was enjoyable. It’s not just a shopping destination — it’s a social hub where people meet, eat, shop, and relax. Whether you’re a tourist, a student, or a local resident, there’s something for everyone. It’s definitely one of Dar es Salaam’s modern gems.
Ismail O — Google review
I had a nice experience visiting Milimani City Mall and would rate it 4 stars overall. The mall is neat, clean, and well-maintained, giving a fresh and comfortable atmosphere for shoppers. One of the major advantages is the plenty of parking space available, which makes it very convenient for visitors and reduces the hassle of finding a spot, especially on busy days. The design of the mall feels luxury and spacious, which makes walking around pleasant and comfortable. Being the largest mall in Dar es Salaam, it has a lot to offer. Mr. Discount Supermarket inside the mall was particularly impressive with good product variety and reasonable choices. However, I did feel that the mall is relatively small in terms of floor space compared to other large malls globally. Adding more floors and expanding options would definitely make the shopping experience more attractive. At some stalls, the prices of products seemed quite expensive, which might not be suitable for everyone. Overall, the mall is already a great place but still has scope for improvement in terms of variety and affordability. It remains one of the best shopping destinations in the city, and I look forward to visiting again.

Mlimani City Shopping Mall is a vibrant place with great shops, restaurants, and entertainment. I really enjoyed my visit, but I truly hope they improve the washrooms and hygiene. A clean and well maintained restroom is very important for visitors. It would make the mall experience even better. Everything else, from the food court to the cinema, is wonderful. With better hygiene facilities, the mall would be nearly perfect for everyone.

Tatu S — Google review
⚠️🚨 WARNING!🚨 DONT STAY HERE! Terribly overpriced. Terrible value for money. The place is very rundown. Everything is makeshift, ramshackle, flimsy, broken. The rooms are super basic, like pop up military barracks, but worse. For the price they charge, it's insulting. No AC, no wifi, no private bathroom, no breakfast included, 25$!!! Are you kidding me... The tiny pool they have is murky/milky and looks very dirty/unsanitary. The beach is super dirty, littered with trash. They can't even make minimal effort to keep the beach clean? Pathetic. But the biggest nono was the fact that a beach bar next door plays extremely loud music the entire day until 2am. Rooms are not soundproof at all so it's very bothersome and completely ruins the experience of everything. The beach water is also very murky. And the beach is very packed with people. Of course the on site bar and restaurant is also overpriced. So as so oft in Tanzania, terrible rip off, terrible value for money. Better go to another country entirely. One where they respect tourists.

The first night we were quite excited sadly it took a turn over the following days. At least one can say that it was an Adventure … First of all, the only person really working hard and did good on customer service was Gloria. Otherwise the hotel staff was quite unfriendly, unresponsive and really really slow. The language barriers were often too high and they just acted that they understood us and then ignored us. The accommodations were very small and are full of bugs and mouses nobody warned us before. The mouses destroyed two of our bags and a good jacket. We couldn’t save them and sadly had to throw them away. Also the premises is quite dangerous! There are a lot of palm trees with many many coconuts on them (in every stage of ripeness). Apparently they’re cut down every week or so on… but they weren’t. Furthermore I stepped on the stone base from the pool but one was completely loose and put into place that it looks nice. So when I walked down the huge stone plate fell on my foot and cut the back side open. Only minutes before that incident a huge, heavy palm branch fell 5 m down the tree and landed directly on the head peace of my boyfriends beach chair. Luckily he only sat a little bit more in the front. Otherwise he wouldn’t be here any more…. For breakfast we had to wait 2 freaking full hours. Even though on there weren’t a lot of people around at all!!! We are talking about maybe 6. And then we were only allowed to have 1 cup of coffee. And don’t let me start with the fact that you had to run and ask for everything because they forgot it. (In the pictures above you can see our 3 little pancakes that took 2 hours to make and also our toast with scrambled eggs… not because we got sunny sight) P.s. we’ve been in Tansania for 4 weeks already. But we didn’t have to face anything similar to this experience.

Safari Inn offers straightforward rooms, some equipped with air conditioning, and provides complimentary breakfast and parking. The inn boasts an excellent location just a 10-minute walk from the Zanzibar ferry. Guests can expect basic yet clean rooms in a very central and secure location. The staff is known for being extremely helpful, arranging inexpensive airport transfers and offering excellent laundry service. While the accommodation is basic, it's reasonably priced and conveniently situated near various city attractions.
Excellent location at 10 mins walk from Zanzibar ferry, room with air conditioning and fan, very reasonably priced. We had forgotten a bag full of valuables in our taxi, who then unknowingly drove off. The managers were kind enough to help us call the airport taxi company (we had only the taxi driver's name to go on) and eventually helped us locate the bag! Thank you so much!

We've slept at Safari Inn one night. Rooms are clean and comfortable, good for the price, and breakfast is the typical breakfast you get in hotels of this category. We were back in Dar after a couple of weeks and the hotel staff allowed us to leave our luggage for free during the day although we would not stay overnight and organised our transfer to the airport. Very kind and helpful!

It's a very rundown and old hotel but I come back every time I stay in Dar. It's very cheap and the location is unbeatable for that price, very central and close to the ferry to Zanzibar. The staff is nice, breakfast is basic but good with fruits, juice and eggs (for an extra 2000), and there's lots of nice restaurants in the area. If you're on a small budget and don't have high expectations it's a good place.

Budget hotel in central town. Great location but a very run down place. The rooms felt dirty, a lot of the fixtures and furniture items were broken, the rooms are poorly designed, the bathroom very basic too. Still felt overpriced even though the price is low. It is easy walking distance to the ferry terminal and the beach as well as all of the city centre attractions. Rooms are small and simple but fine for a night - it is very quiet at night. The thing that stood out for us however was the service - very welcoming, helpful and flexible, including letting us leave our baggage for a week whilst taking a trip to Zanzibar and even shower and freshen up on our return before heading to the airport. Plenty of tips for the neighbourhood and generally very friendly. Bearing in mind the pricing compared to other nearby options I was very satisfied with Safari Inn and would recommend to any budget travellers.

We stayed over one night because we arrived late and wanted to be near the ferry for the next morning’s first departure. It is very basic but the staff are incredibly helpful. They organised a taxi for us at 5am and helped us to find places to have dinner and beers. Its not fancy but it is the best price with great service near the ferry.

I think it should be a college, instead of university, for hours that I spent there I didn't appreciate how students are being treated,it's more like a secondary school or something, but building are great although not that much for the university

YWCA, located on Maktaba St., offers simple and clean hostel-style accommodation in a bustling neighborhood. The single rooms come with fans, sinks, closets, desks, chairs, and beds with nets. Although the shared bathrooms are decently clean, the breakfast provided is not particularly tasty. However, considering the price point, it's a reasonable option for budget travelers. The building itself is relatively secure and there is free breakfast included in all bookings.
For the price it is totally worth it (see rates in the photo). The room and toilets are very basic but clean, wifi works well in the canteen and a simple breakfast is provided free.
Lan K — Google review
For the price, it's not bad. The single rooms have a sink, closet, desk, chair, and bed with a net. They aren't self contained. The bathrooms are decently clean. Breakfast (bread, egg, and chai) are included. There is wifi, but I've never been able to connect to it when I stay here. The building itself is relatively secure.
Abigail M — Google review
Cheap accommodation (20.000 TSH single room). Rooms are very small but clean. Shared bathroom on the floor. Stuff not very friendly and the breakfast (included) is a joke (2 dry slices of white bread, 1 boiled egg and a cuppa).
Stefan S — Google review
Cheap and safe accommodation in the city center. The rooms are very simple and the shared bathroom definitely needs maintenance. There is no air-conditioning, only a van in the room.
Afra M — Google review
Basic, safe, accommodation. Good for travelers on a budget. Shared bathroom for every room. Basic breakfast provided. Very convenient location in city center

We were surprised that there was even wifi here so that's definitely a plus. Friendly people willing to help and free breakfast :). Rooms have a fan and the bathroom is okay but it's great for what the price is.

You cannot enter the place without a permit. That you need to get a permit from some building in town & the people there are not particularly helpful with directions Such a shame that a historic monument like that is not easily accessible to the general populace. You can’t catch a glimpse too as around the monument vendors are there.

Afri Roots Adventures offers a variety of tours in Dar Es Salaam, including bicycle tours that provide an opportunity to explore the city's historical landmarks and interact with locals. One tour is dedicated to experiencing the nightlife of Dar Es Salaam. The 'Dar Reality Cycle' tour provides insights into the lives of people in different districts, offering a glimpse into their lifestyles and local cuisine.
This tour is much better as it described. If you really want to feel Dar es Salaam, just go and try with them. Jeffrey was out guide who also lives in one of the area he showed. So we had very authentic experience. The bile tour is 12km, but with many stops, so you wont feel. Overall 3-3,5hs but with bit of coffee, sweets and refreshments. I really enjoyed it.
Patrik T — Google review
Absolute recommendation! Please go for this tour if you really want to go ‚behind the scenes‘, explore the ‚real‘ Dar all while supporting a local business. While it‘s nice and comfortable to hang out in Masaki, the ‚Reality Tour‘ opens your eyes to Swahili everyday life, culture and community. Jerry, our guide, was so knowledgable, considerate and always took greatest care of us. He even took us to his neighborhood and we met his mom. Organisation was flawless, friendly and super professional. Most special tour, go for it!
Elisabeth S — Google review
I booked the Reality Tour about 24h ago via Viator, came to the meeting point (main entrance of Village Museum), waited for 45 minutes only to find out that nobody showed up. Tried to reach them via Viator platform since their number on the website does not support WhatsApp. No reaction whatsoever. I was very much looking forward to joining this tour but I cannot recommend doing business with such an unorganised agency.

We booked the "Dar Reality Cycle" tour which was absolutely amazing! Our guide provided an insight into the life of the people living in Dar Es Salaam. We saw the very poor and middle class districts, got to know the lifestyle of the people and tried different food and drinks. We were well taken care of by our guide Joseph who was very professional. I also liked that we didn't stop at shops where we were expected to buy something. When booking the tour you should definitely know how to ride a bicycle. The roads are quite bumpy, rocky and sandy. Highly recommended tour!

I did a day hiking to Pugu hills in Jan 2021 and enjoyed very much. After Kilimanjaro Trekking and Safari, most people bypass what Dar and the south has to offer. I would definitely recommend for the hike or bird watching or even mountain bike with these team. They know the local environment and you will appreciate very much.
Hailey K — Google review
I have booked several tours with this company, from walking to hiking to biking to camping to safaris. Each experience was very rewarding and exciting . African owned, the staff are very professional, the costs are affordable and they always put a personal touch on their tours that distinguishes Afriroots from the hundreds of tour companies operating in the country.

Real estate
Located in East Upanga along Bibi Titi Mohamed Road, Uhuru Heights is a towering structure that offers a mix of commercial and residential spaces. The building features retail shops on the lower levels, ample parking, office spaces from the first to ninth floors, and residential apartments from the tenth to twenty-fourth floors. Additionally, there is a luxurious penthouse apartment on the twenty-fifth floor.
I stayed at an Airbnb on the 14th floor. It was quiet and comfortable. Cleaning was done once per day. You can easily walk to the city centre or ferry terminal from here. Across the street there is a mini market located in a passage behind Pizza Hut.

If I could give it 0 stars I would but I am unable to. Just poor had no hot water, dirty bedding and duvet, clothes went missing till we asked where they were and then they were outside on washing line the following day. Do not recommend defo AVOID. Also has a load of cockroaches in the room and had to ask to move to another room which was slightly better but still poor condition.
Anjali — Google review
Beautiful on the outside, disgusting on the inside. Roaches EVERYWHERE! Even climbing into bed. Outdated appliances. Gym is only open when they decide (should be 24hr not everyone is Muslim) Seems to be a mold/ humidity issue as I started to become sick staying here. I stayed for an Airbnb and canceled my stay because for the same price more or less you can get a better quality hotel. I booked the apartment because I wanted to be able to cook. But who’s cooking next to roaches?? STAY AWAY from here

We stayed in the Downtown Seaview apartment at Uhuru Heights on the 16th Floor, from 12th - 16th March 2021. The place looks deceptively good in the pictures, not in real life. The main entrance door to the common area appears to be falling out of the wall. The bedroom smelled pretty bad because of the humidity and noxious smell coming in from just outside the bathroom. The bathroom was in bad taste with the black handbasin countertop looking extremely nasty due to age-old stains that nobody has cared to cleanup. The kitchen is infested with cockroaches and the washer is rusted and smells bad. Future potential clients MUST avoid this place at all cost.
Jafy P — Google review
It's a shame to allow such buildings to raise in Africa. Poor management doesn't help a staff trying to do their best to help hopeless clients. Very dirty common spaces with an horrible smell at many floors, amenities not working. Elevators dangerous !!! Also, there's nothing Tanzanian in this...indian acting like colonizers took the control of this horrible and pretentious place Should be destroyed.
