Historical landmark
Independence Square, also known as Black Star Square, is a historic landmark in Accra, Ghana. It was built to commemorate the country's independence and features the iconic black star symbol. Visiting this spot is an emotional experience for many, especially during national events when the enthusiasm of the locals is palpable. A tour of Independence Square provides valuable insight into Ghana's struggle for independence. The square serves as a significant place for preserving Ghanaian heritage and showcasing its culture to the world.
Since they said you’ve not been to Ghana without visiting this place, I had to pay a courtesy visit and boy, was I not blow away? Not sure what other activities go on at this place, but it’s surely a good place to preserve the Ghanaians’ heritage and show a bit of their culture to the world. Ghana surely has some beautiful places, but this Independence Square sure looks like one one the most beautiful places in Ghana.

Beautiful site just to reflect on our past!! Be careful trying to cross the main road getting to this site but overall a beautiful site. At the moment I was there the grounds was not taken care of (grass very high and they was cleaning up) On site there was a great tour guide/ security guard and he helped us take out amazing pictures and we went to the roof to the Black star. Great site . You can spend like 10 to 20 mins taking pictures. Nothing else there. Enjoy
Trevor T — Google review
Independence Square is one of the few sights in Accra that are truly worth visiting. The nearby Black Star Square is also well worth a stop. There are no official parking spaces, but with a small tip to the local hawkers, it's usually possible to park briefly on the square. The vendors can be a bit pushy, but are generally easy to turn away. Overall, a worthwhile visit for anyone interested in Ghana’s history and symbolism.

History Museums
The National Museum of Ghana, established in 1957, is a significant cultural institution showcasing contemporary paintings by local artists and an array of cultural artifacts. Divided into three main sections - ethnography, archaeology, and art - the museum offers diverse exhibitions featuring archaeological findings from ancient times, traditional Ghanaian paintings, and various exhibits illustrating the country's cultural history including language, chief system, food, clothing and handicrafts.
Amazing history and great stuff. You learn about the Stone Age. How Ghanaians lived way before Southern Civilization.
Gladys B — Google review
A wonderful place to find firsthand information about Ghana, it's origin, the people, and culture. Beautiful and handsome tour guides. For a national meseum, I expected a lot more from them, however, than they currently give. 7 out of 10 recommend!
Michael_kedey — Google review
The National Museum in Accra is relatively small and compact, making it easy to explore in a short amount of time. 80 Cedis Entrance fee for foreigners. While the exhibits themselves could be presented in a more engaging and visually impactful way, the real highlight of our visit was our guide, Mary (Adwoa). She brought the history and everyday life of the Ghanaian people vividly to life, sharing fascinating insights into their traditions and customs. Thanks to her storytelling skills and enthusiasm, the history of Ghana felt engaging and alive, turning what could have been a simple museum visit into a truly memorable experience.
Deborah A — Google review
Brilliant facility with varied history of Ghana, especially Ga and Asante customs/culture. Lots of great photo opportunities and knowledgable guides. The museum is not air conditioned but there are many fans for those sensitive to heat. Stand in the middle below the spider to hear a cool echo!

80 cedi/ 5 usd for foreign visitors. Love the wood craving and brass crafts. Not a big place. It’s nice to have a sip of coke at the restaurant right next to the museum in the hot afternoon.

I visited the National Museum of Ghana last Tuesday, and it was truly an enriching experience. The museum beautifully combines pictorial art, historical artifacts, and well-documented written history. Our tour guide gave us an in-depth overview with vivid explanations that were both engaging and highly educational. The entire place is neat, well-organized, and filled with fascinating historical information. I also appreciated the opportunity to ask questions and get detailed answers that deepened my understanding. One thing that stood out to me was the unique echo of our voices inside the museum—it added to the overall memorable experience. The museum also features a shop where you can purchase authentic African items such as bags, fans, slippers, apparel, and more. In addition, there’s a restaurant that serves meals, making it convenient for visitors to relax and refresh. This place is suitable for all ages, especially students who want to learn more about Ghana’s history. I highly recommend it to both locals and tourists—it’s definitely a must-visit.

The national museum of Ghana is such a historic place to visit. The place offers both pictorial art and views as well as written history. The tour guide gave us an extensive overview and vivid explanations which was very educative. The place is neatly and well organized with great and historical information. I had the opportunity to ask questions and also I got the information I needed. The place is a must visit as I was intrigued by the echoes of our voices when we talked. There’s a shop that sells African stuffs, ranging from bags, fan, slipper, apparels etc. They also have a restaurant that offers meals as well. Suitable for all ages, especially school goers to know more history of the country. I highly recommend this place for visitors.

Osu Castle, a historic fortress dating back to the early 17th century, is steeped in rich and complex history. Over the years, it has been a focal point of power struggles as various rulers vied for ownership. Notably, Osu Castle served as a significant holding site for enslaved individuals before they were transported overseas.

An impressive place that gives a good insight into the mischief perpetrated by various European countries, as well as into Ghana's more recent history. The castle is not as crowded as Cape Coast. We had an excellent guide, Hassan. It's a shame that the maintenance work isn't progressing... (therefor the 4 instead of 5)

Cost was 80 cedis for non citizens and 8 cedis for Ghanaians. I was so happy to be able to visit Osu Castle. It does hold a lot of history. Parking was easy/free. The Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park & Mausoleum in Accra, Ghana, is a significant landmark honoring the country's first president. The mausoleum and museum pay tribute to Kwame Nkrumah, who led Ghana to independence from British colonial rule in 1957. The impressive marble mausoleum features a black star symbolizing African unity and is surrounded by water and statues of African freedom fighters.
A historic place to learn about Ghana's First President and founder, Pan-Africanist, also voted BBC African of the Millennium, The Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. His birth and early life, school days, achievements, presidential days, all the way down to his overthrow and death. The tour guides are really helpful, and provide lots of information about the place. Tours can be organized in both French and English. The place is beautiful with much history. Some notable places are his burial ground, alongside his wife's, the place where the independence of Ghana was declared, the presidential library, a mango Tree Nelson Mandela planted when He visited Nkrumah, the iconic forward-ever statue of Nkrumah, and a lot more. Should be on your bucket list when in Ghana. I recommend 10 out of 10.
Michael_kedey — Google review
Great work done here to transform the look of this place. I love the environment and they’re really doing a good job here. Proud of the fact that they’re doing all they can to preserve our history. The your guides are very much informed and the way they articulate facts is impressive. I love how neat the place is. I hope they keep it up. The Government should add more pleasant features to heighten the hype around this place. Will surely be back again.

Had a good tour guide! Choose to listen before pictures, you can always do that after the tour, immerse yourself in the history. I finished the tour more knowledgeable, and that's the point for this place. The NAB Voyage, AKA, the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum hosts deep history and remains of the late revered pan-african leader. Key moments were preserved in the museum, and his thoughts were inscribed on the walls of the gallery.

The Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park beautifully honors Ghana’s founding father, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. The architecture is striking, the grounds are well maintained, and the museum inside gives a powerful insight into Ghana’s journey to independence. The statues, fountains, and peaceful atmosphere make it both educational and reflective. Whether you’re a local or a tourist, this place connects you to the soul of Ghana’s history. Highly recommend!

A beautiful display and museum honoring Ghana first president Kwame Nkrumah. When you arrive you pay an entrance fee about 100 cedis for adults and 30 for children. There are art pieces, videos, excerpts from his speeches and much more. The mausoleum where he and his wife lay is a beautiful architectural structure that stands in the middle of the park. It was a great tribute to their first leader of independence.
Colette G — Google review
Former polo field, this site stands as a symbol of change and independence for the Ghanaian population. It is composed of the mausoleum and two museum floors. The grounds are also pleasant to walk around.

Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park – A Powerful Tribute Located in Accra, the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park is a beautifully renovated tribute to Ghana’s first president and a key figure in Africa’s independence movement. The striking mausoleum, flanked by serene fountains and manicured gardens, houses the remains of Nkrumah and his wife. A well-curated museum and new Freedom Hall offer rare artifacts and powerful insights into his Pan-African vision. Recent upgrades include a presidential library, amphitheater, digital access system, and visitor amenities, making it both modern and respectful of history. Guided tours are informative, and the park’s peaceful atmosphere invites reflection. A must-visit for anyone interested in Ghana’s rich political legacy.

Independence Arch, also known as the Black Star Gate, is a significant symbol of Ghana's fight for independence from British rule. Built in 1961 by Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, it stands as a tribute to fallen soldiers and a beacon of freedom. The arch is located at Accra's Independence Square and serves as the focal point for national events such as presidential inaugurations, Independence Day celebrations, military parades, and more.
A must-visit in Accra! 🇬🇭 Independence Square stands as a powerful symbol of Ghana’s strength, resilience, and fight for freedom. Walking through its history and climbing to the top offered breathtaking views of the city a truly unforgettable experience. Whether you’re a history enthusiast or just looking for a stunning view, this landmark is worth the visit!

The area is quite open and neat, so it can accommodate many people at once. Nicely built structures that remind me of similar memorial structures in Washington. It's accessible even at night. The structures are well lit, so it is more aestatically pleasing at night, in my opinion. You can still take nice photos. But if you want to appear in them, you will need a good camera or special light of your own. Downside for me going at night was the mosquitoes! I was almost eaten alive! For some reason, I wore pants instead of shorts, and that was a life saver! Have a plan to avoid mosquito 🦟 bites as much as you can!
Arinze U — Google review
Visiting the Independence Square in Accra was such a beautiful moment for me. Standing under the grand Black Star Gate with the bold inscription “Freedom and Justice” felt like stepping right into history. The square is spacious and peaceful, despite the busy traffic. It tells the story of Ghana’s freedom in 1957 and stands as a reminder for generations to cherish independence. Walking around the square, I felt deeply connected to the spirit of Africa’s struggle and triumph. It had palm trees swaying gently in the background, making it perfect for both reflection and photos. If you ever visit Accra, make sure you don’t miss this iconic landmark. It’s more than sightseeing, it’s an experience that leaves you inspired as well as hopeful! 🌟

Really loved here. Will surely be back. But I wish tour guides can be assigned here to help people get around. Also, the place could be neater given its historical significance. There are some Nigerians here begging people for money. It is really annoying. Something should be done about that as well.

Osu Castle, also known as Fort Christianborg, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in the vibrant town of Osu in Ghana's capital, Accra. This 17th-century castle has a rich history, having been owned by various European nations before becoming Ghana's property after gaining independence. It served as the residence of Ghana's first president, Kwame Nkrumah.

A tour of this historical place is where you can get all the information about the comming of the first Europeans to Ghana in the 1400s, and their subsequent deeds, including slavery and colonialism. The tour guides/historians are well informed, and knowledgeable. You can freely ask questions and get answers. This place also served as the seat of Government, even after independence, hence so much history. I recommend 10 out of 10.

This should be a must see for any visitor to Accra. It is secure and safe as it is inside a government/military area. When you arrive you can pay for a tour which I highly recommend. The tour guide was phenomenal and taught us about the history of the castle in the history of Ghana including the slave trade, the British colonial period, and recent presidents. He was so knowledgeable the castle is very interesting. You can see the dungeons where they kept slaves, queen elizabeths’s bedroom, and even an underground tunnel used to transport slaves. There is also a beautiful garden area you can walk around after the tour. As a solo female traveler I felt very safe and there were many families with children as well. I only recommend keeping a hold on small children as they do have not high railings on every turn like in many western countries… I watched a toddler barrel towards a railing which was only a few feet high which she could have toppled over. (She was fine). I think this is a must see for any tourist and would highly recommend, excellent experience.

I don’t have an issue with Nigerians but loads of them are here sort of forcing you to give them money and that’s not good at all. Curious about history or just love iconic landmarks? Independence Square/Black Star Square, is a must-visit. This historic site, built to commemorate Ghana’s independence, is one of the largest city squares in the world. Its most striking feature is the Black Star Gate, a powerful symbol of freedom and African unity. The square is perfect for soaking in the atmosphere, taking pictures, or just enjoying the open space. It’s especially vibrant during national celebrations and events, where the square comes alive with parades, music, and cultural displays. Even on quieter days, its calm ambiance and rich history make it worth the visit. Highly recommend stopping by if you’re in Accra. Whether you’re exploring on your own or with friends, it’s a great way to experience a piece of Ghana’s heritage. 9/10.

The Independence Square (Black Star Square) is a square for most government ceremonies. It's open to the public at anytime, and one can freely visit, move about, and take pictures. Opposite the square, is the famous Independence Arch, not to be confused with the arch shape, at the square. This is also accessible to anyone at anytime, however if you want to climb to the top of the arch, you may need permission from some guides onsite. There are some photographers at the arch site, who can dress you up in royal local attire, and take photos, at a fee. There's also the "I love Ghana", in a park, signage behind the Independence Arch. There are no tour guides on both sites, and no tickets needed. I recommend 6 out of 10.

⭐ Black Star Square Review Black Star Square, also known as Independence Square, is one of Ghana’s most iconic landmarks and a powerful symbol of freedom. Located in the heart of Accra, it beautifully represents the country’s journey toward independence and unity. The vast open space, with its grand stands and the towering Black Star Gate, offers a sense of pride and history. It’s a great spot for photos, especially around sunset when the golden light reflects off the monument. The area is usually calm, but during national events and parades, it becomes a vibrant hub full of energy and celebration. A must-visit for anyone exploring Accra and wanting to connect with the spirit of Ghana. Tip: Visit early morning or late afternoon for the best lighting and fewer crowds.

A very enjoyable Sunday lunch. We rocked up without a reservation (which I suspect was frowned upon) but were able to secure a table upstairs, but outside. I’ve been to the Polo Club Restaurant a couple of times now, and they always deliver. From the service to the food and overall ambience, everything is consistently top-notch. It’s the kind of place that makes you feel taken care of from the moment you walk in. The indoor dining area is beautifully set and perfect for a quiet, elegant meal but my personal favorite is the patio. Dining outdoors while overlooking the lawn adds something special to the experience. If you’re lucky, you might catch a horse ride or two while you eat, which is always a treat. On my most recent visit, my waiter, Elton, was especially kind and attentive. It’s that level of service that keeps me coming back. Whether it’s your first time or your fifth, the Polo Club never disappoints.

A very big place of worship like Quodesh, didn't tour the place much but i tell you the arrangement of the structures is amazing literally like a museum, i love the fact that its build with brick. An architectural work of art. They have a school too.

Looks bigger from the outside. Sits like an old relic. Beautiful church.

Unfortunately, wouldn't recommend you go there. This is coming from a Christian and someone actively working within the Anglican church. Was spoken to very rudely after entering by someone I can only believe is security and told to 'get out!'. Very disappointing as I visit churches all over the world and have never ever encountered anything like this. I hope this lack of hospitality is not the norm

Very nice building of old, built with old church architecture. In a very calm atmosphere but in the middle of a very congested and business filled location of the high street after the Vodafone office in the Accra business Centre. It’s an amazing place to visit.

A good location for international and local trade affairs. The location has good, planned, and properly demarcated parking lots. The place might be busy most days. The place being in the middle of the town is a little problematic due to high vehicular gridlock. However, the location is a good one.

The Supreme Court of Ghana, located in Accra, is a significant symbol of the nation's legal system and governance. It holds a rich history that reflects the country's journey towards independence and its social and political struggles. The court building itself is well-maintained with historic architecture, providing a serene atmosphere for legal proceedings. Students from Best Brain International School have had the opportunity to visit and learn about the workings of the court, witnessing firsthand the expertise of judges in this beautiful setting.

A beautiful place and iconic edifice representing the legal strides and achievements of Ghana. There are no tours for this place, and pictures inside of the courthouse aren't allowed. Be sure to kindly talk to the security guards, before entering and taking photos. 7 out of 10 recommend.

"Equality before the law, like universal suffrage, holds a privileged place in our political system, and to deny equality before the law delegitimizes that system. . . . when these rights are denied, the expectation that the affronted parties should continue to respect the political system . . . that they should continue to treat it as a legitimate political system--has no basis." —David Luban, Lawyers and Justice: An Ethical Study, 251, 264-66 n.12 (Princeton Univ. Press, 1988)
Am3takoli M — Google review
The Supreme Court of Ghana is the highest judicial authority in the country, established by the 1992 Constitution. As the final court of appeal, it plays a critical role in interpreting and upholding the Constitution, ensuring the rule of law, and safeguarding democracy in Ghana. The Supreme Court's decisions are final and binding on all lower courts, making it central to the legal and judicial system of the nation. The Court is tasked with adjudicating significant legal cases, including constitutional matters, disputes between public institutions, and cases that have wide-ranging legal implications. It also serves as the guardian of the Constitution, ensuring that all laws and actions of the government conform to constitutional principles. Comprising the Chief Justice and other justices, the Supreme Court functions independently to ensure impartiality in its rulings. Its role extends to shaping legal precedents that guide the judicial interpretation of laws and protecting the rights and freedoms of citizens in Ghana.
Divine A — Google review
The infrastructure is quite impressive, though it's unfortunate the restroom cost GHS 1 to use. It could certainly benefit from some renovations. The cafeteria isn't exactly Starbucks, but it at least has coffee available. Security is tight, and litigants and visitors should expect to be searched. Lawyers walk through... It's a bummer, Ghanaian Courts are rooted on the foundation that the Courts exist to serve lawyers but not the people. Therefore, lawyers were deem the "public" when they were informed of upward Court fees increase by 30% whilst the rest of the public learnt of such increase when filing a process. The big part of their duties to shape civilization with each ruling or judgment is yet to see the light of day. On the plus side, there’s a spacious parking area, and it’s free!!! Hopefully, for now!!!

Located in the heart of Accra's Central Business District, The Octagon is a 12-story retail-office complex that offers office suites, co-working spaces, and serviced hotel apartments. It is known as the first commercial project in Ghana with a helipad. Despite some criticisms about space utilization and restroom facilities, The Octagon impresses visitors with its modern design and versatile facilities suitable for corporate conferences, social gatherings, or cultural exhibitions.
The Octagon is strategically located in the heart of Accra Central, surrounded by major landmarks such as the headquarters of prominent banks, Ghana’s main courthouses, and the Cedi House (Ghana’s Central Bank). It is easily accessible from Independence Avenue and Barnes Road. Positioned right across from prestigious 5-star hotels like Novotel, Movenpick Ambassador, and the new Kempinski Hotel, The Octagon offers an ideal business setting. Just twenty minutes from the airport, it is also within walking distance of Independence Square, Accra Stadium, and the scenic Ocean Front.

Here was a lovely cafe called CoCo Cafe in Accra Central. It's at the bottom of the Octagon building. It's a nice place to have a drink and a snack. They do a delicious pineapple 🍍 and ginger 🫚 drink and they do lovely salads 🥗 😋 Nearby is the Accra Metropolitan Assemblies. (new building)

The Octagon is a business centre that leases out office spaces to high target clients. The outdoor garden is beautiful, usually used for weddings, parties, and concert. Has 24/7 security, cleaning, and maintenance staff on the field. The office spaces have their own kitchen and washroom. Their elevators are fast and smell good. The whole reception smells so good, and the receptionist is so beautiful and speaks well. I highly recommend if you are looking for an office space.

People say it's a waste of space but I say, it's the best use of space in a congested vicinity. A spacious place for everything and anything. I liked the vegetable collection although more exotic pricey but cheaper than Max Mart. Maybe it was just me but a bit more lighting would be helpful

Once you make it to the 15th floor of the building you're sure you enjoy the views from the height. But the AC could be better in the pantry so it's not so warm when you go for your lunch meal.

Their staffs are well cultured. They smile, talk politely and give you guidnce where the need may be. They have a car park, wheel chair accessible entrance as well.
