Botanical garden
Located within Eastern Park on the eastern outskirts of Geelong's central business district, the Geelong Botanic Gardens is a serene and historic destination. Established in 1851, it is the fourth-oldest botanic garden in Australia and boasts a diverse collection of plants from around the world.
Parking was very easy, and free, and just a short walk to the main gates. Beautiful mid-sized botanical gardens, with a vast and beautiful selection of plants and flowers and trees, shrubs, ferns, the list goes on. Lovely little oval space entranceway that then leads to some beautifully well maintained lawns, the greenhouse, fountains and other impressive sculptures. There was some minor upgrades/repairs that were being conducted, but nothing major that hindered the experience. Very peaceful to walk around, so many varieties that you could spend well over an hour or two just reading into each species and enjoying their beauty. If it’s your sort of thing, I’d recommend bringing a picnic blanket and some snacks as the lawns are very well maintained and a lush green. There are also several of them that are quite large in size, so you can relax with some privacy. All in all a great stop and definitely recommend if you’re in or passing through Geelong!

A small garden but beautifully maintained & a pleasure to walk around. Nice little coffee shop to sit & enjoy the surroundings. Very close to the foreshore also.

Great place to come and visit. Well laid out. Plenty of signs around next to the plants and trees. Good walkways. Areas to sit through out. There is also a cafe within the gardens. Well must visit. Be mindful of the times as it is open at a set time each day.
Christine B — Google review
The garden is very well maintained and not too big. We spent about 1.5 hours here, slowly admiring the plants and blooms, as my elderly companion loves flowers. We visited on a weekday morning, and it was quite difficult to find a parking spot, not sure if it is always like this or if there was an event nearby on that day. There is also a café inside. Free entrance and parking. Worth a visit if you are in the area and enjoy plants.

A Peaceful Escape at the Geelong Botanic Gardens – Where Nature and Reflection Meet A recent visit to the Geelong Botanic Gardens turned into one of those quietly unforgettable experiences that linger in your memory long after you leave. I went with a friend, expecting a simple afternoon stroll, but what we found was a place that perfectly balances tranquility, beauty, and inspiration. From the moment we stepped through the gates, the lush greenery and thoughtfully designed pathways drew us in. Each section felt like its own little world, vibrant flower beds bursting with colour, century-old trees providing shade, and the gentle sound of water adding rhythm to the atmosphere. We spent time wandering through the heritage garden, reading the plaques, and learning about native Australian plants that thrive in this unique coastal climate. There were plenty of lighthearted moments too; like when we tried (and failed) to capture the perfect photo under a canopy of leaves that kept moving with the breeze. It was one of those places that naturally encourages conversation, laughter, and quiet reflection all at once. What truly stood out was how well-maintained and welcoming the gardens felt, the layout was accessible, and every detail reflected care and pride in preserving this space for the community. The Geelong Botanic Gardens reminded me that sometimes, the most meaningful moments happen when we simply pause to appreciate the natural beauty around us and the company we share it with.

Scenic paths winding amongst a wide variety of trees, palms & shrubs. Licensed cafe with a good menu provides a pleasant interlude for vistors. Free entry.

Had a great experience there. Was fun exploring different areas, run, hide and seek, talk about different plants and flowers etc. we took our bikes and kids enjoyed biking there.

Points of Interest & Landmarks
Nestled in the heart of Geelong's Cultural Precinct, Geelong Gallery has been a beacon of artistic expression since its establishment in 1896. As one of Australia's oldest regional art galleries, it boasts an impressive collection that spans over 6,000 works, showcasing significant pieces from the 19th and 20th centuries alongside contemporary Australian art. Visitors can immerse themselves in a rich tapestry of creativity that includes not only paintings but also decorative arts from European masters spanning three centuries.
Geelong Gallery pairs classical charm with contemporary vitality. The grand entrance opens onto light-filled rooms where colonial landscapes share wall space with bold modern pieces, and the juxtaposition feels fresh rather than forced. Skylights throw soft natural light across varnished floors, making colours glow without glare, while well-pitched labels offer context in plain language so you learn without slowing the stroll. Temporary exhibitions rotate through the central hall and often bring big-city calibre works to a regional setting, giving locals regular reasons to return. Staff greet visitors with a genuine smile and seem happy to chat about recent acquisitions or offer quick tips on what not to miss. The compact footprint means you can see the permanent collection in an hour yet still find quiet corners to linger, especially in the mezzanine where smaller works encourage closer inspection. A glass wall overlooks Johnston Park, adding a moment of greenery between galleries, and the adjoining shop stocks thoughtfully curated art books and gifts without feeling touristy. Entry is free, donations are gently encouraged, and elevator access keeps the space friendly for prams and wheelchairs. Geelong Gallery succeeds in making art feel welcoming, relevant and refreshingly accessible.

It is a nice place to visit while in Geelong and is free of charge. For me, there were less things to see which I didn’t enjoy much as the place was wide but only offers limited art pieces. The gallery though was clean and bright which made the place vibrant. There are places to seat while waiting for friends or family members who are enjoying the place. Although this place is not for me but willbe enjoyed by people who love art and learning the history about it.
Hillary C — Google review
The permanent exhibition has good landscape works from historic Geelong, though a broader selection would be welcome. The Archibald Prize exhibition is certainly worth visiting.
Ida N — Google review
A beautiful gallery situated in the heart of Geelong. It offers a captivating blend of temporary and permanent exhibitions that are a must-vist for art lovers. I recently explored a temporary exhibition at the gallery, Janenne Eaton: Lines of Sight - Frame and Horizon, and it was and inspiring and thought provoking experience.
Mitraja B — Google review
Good place to spend your day off for about an hour. The place isn’t very large, but there are still some things to see. When I went, there was a special exhibition that required an additional fee.

Went to the Geelong Gallery for Archibald 2025 and it was a wonderful experience. The exhibition was well organised, the staff were friendly, and the space was clean and quiet.
Meng-Hsuan L — Google review
Geelong Art Gallery, such a divine small space and today it was filled with big paintings celebrating modern Australia. The Archibald Prize finalists were awesome! There is a great coffee shop across the road, Tutti... in the theatre building, if you need.
Kristin W — Google review
We Saw the Archibald Prize paintings and prize-winning ones. Very interesting. We have some wonderful painters; and their paintings looked like photos, showing the xlnt skills of the painters. A few looked lousy to me. I saw no painting skills in these ones. Overall a very good experience and only $20 admission. Lovely big gallery rooms , and had booklets to explain every one of the 56 paintings on show. There is also a licenced cafe selling meals etc. Very busy, but service was xlnt and fast considering the crowd there. We will go again next year to see the next exhibition. Nice clean toilets. A very nice precinct. Well worth going.

Johnstone Park is a charming Victorian-era park located in Geelong, offering extensive lawns and beautiful sculptural works. Originally a swamp that was later transformed into a dam, the park provides a peaceful setting for leisurely strolls and relaxation. It is also home to cultural institutions and hosts occasional markets and concerts. With its rich history dating back to the late 1800s, Johnstone Park offers visitors a serene escape with its lush greenery and tranquil ambiance.
The park is an ideal destination for those seeking relaxation, as it features a vibrant display of flowers and a cool breeze during the winter months, making it perfect for pleasant walks.
Oliver ( — Google review
Pretty decent park that not only serves as a shortcut to the train station (or CBD) but has enough grass, gardens, seats and paths to be relaxing and accommmodating. Markets and concerts here occasionally are always good. I had my wedding photos done here a long time ago. A longer a time ago, when colonists arrived here circa 1830s, it used to be a water resource and if you catch Addy articles from those times you can read about drunks falling in to it or animals (not drunk... I hope).
Par H — Google review
The park is at a walking distance from Geelong station. It has a nice garden which is ideal for a picnic with kids and family. It does have Geelong library at the centre of it which is also a must visit. Just cross the road and you would be in the market where you can find lot of eating options.

Beach
Eastern Beach in Geelong is a popular spot for families and beach enthusiasts. It offers a swimming enclosure with safety measures, including a shark gate, making it ideal for kids. The beach features a boardwalk along the sea baths, providing easy access to the water and diving facilities. Visitors can enjoy sunbathing on the sandy white beach or take leisurely walks from the carousel to the bathing enclosure. The area is bustling with people having picnics and children enjoying the busy children's pool.
Best beach in my opinion, especially for gatherings with families and friends. Swimming pool, the diving platform, BBQ machines on the grass, and much more. You will have plenty of fun there.
Mark L — Google review
This place is perfect for spending time with family—relaxing, chatting, and watching the sunset together. It’s truly beautiful and incredibly peaceful. Laying out a picnic mat on the grass and just enjoying the moment felt like pure happiness.
Lois C — Google review
Eastern Beach There are delightful things at Eastern Beach, a Ferris wheel, a swimming pool for children, a café, open space for sunbathing, picnics and sports. The driver requires AU$10 payment for riding the tour bus. The seagulls welcome visitors but don’t feed them. Better apply insect repellent on your skin and clothes because of the mosquitoes in the grass. The toilets are dirty with messy food and liquid on the ground.
John L — Google review
If keep driving until the end of Eastern Beach you will arrive at a most beautiful location when you have the pool and sky wheel view at the left and a park in your right where you can have family gathering and a cuppa.

7Geelong Railway Station

Train station
Geelong Station is a well-preserved station from the golden era of train travel, exuding a sense of grandeur and history. The friendly staff and preserved architecture add to its charm, making it a convenient stop for travelers heading to the city center and Eastern Beach. The station offers connecting services and features a well-stocked cafe for visitors.
Geelong Railway Station blends historic charm with practical amenities, making it a solid hub for regional travel. The lifts and customer service are standout features, and the bus connections are a plus for exploring the Surf Coast. That said, a few tweaks—like better vending options, improved signage, and a deeper clean in high-traffic areas—could elevate it to rival the polished stations I’ve seen in Europe. If you’re passing through, take a moment to admire the period architecture and old railway photos in the booking room—they’re a nod to Geelong’s rich history.
Travel V — Google review
Cafe is Small and nice. Toilet is always dirty.
Anjil — Google review
Geelong Railway Station blends 19th-century character with the practical needs of a busy commuter hub. The red-brick façade and clock tower greet passengers with a touch of Victorian grandeur, and arched windows in the main hall let in enough daylight to soften the constant shuffle of travellers. Step onto the island platform and you still catch glimpses of the original bluestone foundations alongside modern electronic departure boards. Trains for Melbourne run frequently during peak hours and usually stick to the timetable, while services toward Warrnambool feel more relaxed but still reliable. V/Line staff at the ticket window are quick with advice about Myki top-ups, platform changes and connection times, and conductors often add an extra bit of local knowledge for visitors. Practical touches make the stopover easy. Sheltered seating keeps the wind at bay, a small kiosk supplies decent coffee and toasties, and clean toilets sit just beyond the waiting room. Lifts and ramps provide step-free access between street level and platforms, though the footbridge can feel narrow when two trains empty at once, so a little patience helps. Bike racks and long-stay parking cater to commuters, and the taxi rank out front usually has a cab or two waiting even after the last evening train. Geelong Station may not aim for city-terminal polish, yet the blend of heritage architecture, friendly staff and generally smooth operations gives it a welcoming character that makes the commute or day-trip start on the right note.
Le G — Google review
Beautiful old station with great staff. Lots of connecting services and a well stocked cafe if you get stuck and have to wait for a bit. Plus it's close to town so a good location. Carpark could probably be bigger but it's not like they have space to expand!
Matthew L — Google review
Geelong Train Station holds a special place in my heart. Not only does it serve as a vital transportation hub for the city, but it also boasts a rich history that adds to its charm. As one of the oldest stations in Victoria, Geelong Train Station carries with it a sense of nostalgia and heritage. Its iconic 19th-century train shed, listed on the Victorian Heritage Register, is a testament to its historical significance. It's fascinating to know that this station has been a part of Geelong's story since it opened its doors in 1856. Over the years, the station has undergone several upgrades to meet the needs of modern travelers while preserving its heritage. From the construction of the current station building in the late 19th century to the recent installation of a new pedestrian overpass and CCTV cameras, each improvement has enhanced the station's functionality and safety. The upgrade completed in 2015, brought further enhancements, including DDA-compliant facilities, brighter LED lights, and improved signage. These additions not only improve the overall experience for passengers but also contribute to the station's aesthetics and sustainability. Geelong Train Station is more than just a transportation hub; it's a symbol of Geelong's rich history and ongoing commitment to progress. Whether you're commuting to work or exploring the city, this station welcomes you with open arms and a touch of heritage. A heartfelt thank you to everyone involved in maintaining and improving this beloved landmark. Whether you're passing by on your daily commute or exploring Geelong's heritage, taking a moment to admire the station's architecture and history is a must.
Kia Y — Google review
Genuinely furious, and the worst part is individuals rely on this system so my review does NOTHING. I understand the need to shut down this station at a certain time as the demand is too low, but Geelong is a city. I should not be forcibly removed so they can close the station, 15 MINUTES before the bus replacement coach had arrived. I was informed that the station would have a 11:07 train to southern cross station. This caused me to leave my event earlier so I could make it. After arriving at the station I had to make my way to the service desk as my train didn’t leave at its intended time and no one told me that a new bus replacement would be occurring 20minuyes later. When I tried to stay inside they pushed me out so they could close the space. No other place seems to close early when customers are still using their service. Instead we all wait until the customers are happy, especially if we (the employees) are the cause of the delayed service.
Jack V — Google review
THE MOST UNRELIABLE SERVICE! Horrible experience — I commute every day, and about twice a month the trains aren’t running. They’re replaced by coaches, which take three whole hours as they stop at every station.
Parth V — Google review
Plenty of parking.. There's 2 kind of parking, this car park and another one in another side of platform 1. but thats only for V/Line customers and only limited 10 minutes park. If you park here, you must walk abit, go downstairs and cross inside the tunnel follow the sign board, not really dark at night but it is so quiet and feels eerie at night, like creepy feels. After that, go upstairs and you will find the parking lot for the customers V/Line limited 10 minutes only. Sometimes in the night you will find some kind of mad person keep talking to you and keep shouting like drunk. Shouting to you non-stop.

For the love of history and a place in time! If those that worked here over a 100 years ago could see the space now, in all its modern splendour... Would they feel as if some part of themselves has lived on? Their photographs frozen in time to remind us. The gifts of those human beings that came before us has given us what we have now. The architecture is grounded in the past with thoughtful changes and new structures bringing it firmly into the future while we exist in it in the present. I relish in the blend of old and new. Bringing new life into something time has kindly left us to build apon. I adore the understated individual garden spaces in all areas. A lovely touch. Wonderful for those that work there to take a moment for themselves. Gardens are gifts for the mind/body and soul. Laying foundations for tranquillity and oneness with nature. Effortlessly creating a more balanced work/life ratio. After all we are human beings not robots. The gardens are splendid for visitors to meander about leisurely aswell. A gift for which I'm grateful for. I look forward to more creative transformations at our visionary Federal Mills, sewing the seeds of inspiration. 🙏❤️⏳️

this station is perfect except for the tain timetable. as a high school student i depend on public transport as a way to go school, tutoring and extracurriculars such as my soccer. at least 50% of the time the trains from this station dont even come also trains dont visit this station often enough compare to tarneit which gets visited by one train line twice in 20 minutes but in little river youll be lucky to get a train coming once every 35 mins, i jus had a soccer game in deer park which i couldnt go to becuase my train was canceled and the next one was in 35 mins. this is so annoying i cant even get to school on time. i also think vline has to work on itself and stop cancelling so many trains we depend on its frustrating and causes so many loses, if only i could drive.

It's very difficult to get an uber from here if you're going to Avalon Airport, plan ahead and use the skybus instead

Station has car parking and the station is clean, there are no toilets, no customer service, no inside waiting area and no rubbish bins

This place is absolutely stunning – full of vintage charm, character, and history. Every corner feels like a piece of the past frozen in time, yet still so alive and beautiful.🌿If you haven’t been, it’s definitely worth a visit! Perfect for a wander, photos, and just soaking in the atmosphere. Truly a hidden gem right here in Geelong.💛

Beautiful place but many workshops were closed even on a Sunday which was a bit disappointing. Definitely worth a visit as it’s just a short distance from Geelong.
Divya D — Google review
Stunning historic paper mill, when opened in 1878 was one of the most advanced paper mills in the world. Best seen from the Buckley's falls spot across the river. I used to take the kids here when they were young it was such a gorgeous and interesting piece of architecture and history.
J D — Google review
Definitely worth the trip. Very pretty and much to see. Driving to the other side of the river (Buckley Falls lookout) to see the mill from a distance as a backdrop to the gorgeous river/falls is a must.

Simply a cool place to be, be reminded all workshops open in weekend* only
