Churches & Cathedrals
The Papeete Catholic Cathedral, also known as Cathedrale Notre-Dame de Papeete, is a historic colonial and partly Gothic-style church that was built by French missionaries and inaugurated in 1875. It is one of the must-see cultural sites in Tahiti, along with the Papeete market, pearl museum, and Paofai Park.
Beautiful local cathedral with Tahitian style. You have to visit. Wonderful architecture. Oldest church on the island. Beautiful wooden carvings. I really liked that the stations of the cross paintings had Tahitian flair.
Ernesto A — Google review
This is a church. In the middle of the city. Nothing special. But free parking for two hours, close to the main port, in a calm area.
Miklós C — Google review
I was in Tahiti on 22nd August, 2017, a beautiful but pretty hot day, and while out site-seeing was looking for the US Embassy (McDonald's) and came across the Papeete Catholic Cathedral, know as Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Papeete. Not at all far from the waterfront, it's a modest but nice Cathedral. It was built by French missionaries in the period 1848-1875 making it the oldest church in Tahiti. Also of interest is that it's the last remaining examples of the early colonial architecture of Papeete. The gaily coloured with red roof, not to mention the distinctive red spire on the church tower certainly make this cathedral a stand out in the centre of the capital. The Cathedral has benefited from several restorations over the years and it will be interesting to see how it holds its place in years to come as central Papeete develops, as I'm sure that it will. ps. Walking a little further down the road from the Cathedral I eventually found the rather uninteresting U.S. Embassy.

Sort of a sparse church, but excellent cross ventilation so it is very pleasant inside.

Nature & Parks
Bougainville Park, located in Papeete, Tahiti, is a small and peaceful urban oasis named after French navigator Louis Antoine de Bougainville. The park features tree-topped walkways, shaded lawns, public gardens, a tranquil stream, a koi carp-filled pond, tropical vegetation and an enormous shade-giving banyan tree. Visitors can relax on benches by the waterfront and enjoy people-watching.
Always visit parks where you visit. You learn a bit of history and enjoy the calmness amongst the hustle and bustle of downtown. It's much bigger than it looks and has a water garden too. This park is on the main drag and worth the stop to appreciate. It's also part of a bigger downtown walking tour.
Nancy C — Google review
Amazing place for chilling out, having some coffee or beer in a nice bars and restaurants surrounded. Or just go for a nice walk. If you feel like having exercise, perfect place for running or for a gym there is a several outdoor gym center free of charge available in the park.

Museum
The Tomb of King Pōmare V, originally the resting place of Queen Pōmare IV, now houses the cremated remains of Tahiti's final monarch. Despite its small size and somewhat challenging location to find, it is a site rich in history. Surrounded by beautiful grounds and located near a picturesque beach, it offers visitors an intriguing glimpse into Tahiti's royal past.
Nice little walk around, pretty little rock pools to look at nearby
Erin S — Google review
I thought the tomb was very cool. However, there was no explanation and you cannot go inside. It's also kind of hidden behind the church. It's a good spot to visit if it's in route of where you want to go. Otherwise it may be a little disappointing if you purposely drive there to visit the tomb.
Hester H — Google review
not much to see of the tomb but the beach here is very nice
Sylver C — Google review
Was expecting more than just attune. There was no information about it or anything else
Debbie W — Google review
Like most other sites in Tahiti, there is absolutely no information at all... Very disappointed to not find any information at all about this important historical site!
Jarrod H — Google review
OK, don't hate on me, please, but the tomb it's self is kinda boring it's cool to see once, but only once, BUT the beach is pretty nice. I see locals here all the time. The building around the tomb is also interesting. So it gets 3 out of 5.
Marcus H — Google review
The tomb is nice, but seen in the blink of an eye. Locals who were cleaning it said that it is "a tabu" and can't be visited inside.
Stf S — Google review
It was a little difficult to find this spot, but interesting all the same. There's not much else around except the church to see. The grounds are beautiful though.

The Musée de la Perle Robert Wan, located on boulevard Pomare at rue l'Arthemise, is a small yet captivating museum dedicated to the history of pearls and jewelry making. Named after Robert Wan, a pioneer in the local pearl industry, the museum offers educational exhibits on the legends of pearls and their cultural significance. Visitors can explore the process of pearl cultivation and learn about what to look for when selecting pearls.
A good place to understand how those pearls grow and where are they from. No ticket, no reservation, just walk in.
Jo A — Google review
Informative. Explains the history of pearls in the pacific. Took 20 minutes to view all exhibits. I know understand the Robert Wan is the Polynesian pearls equivalent of DeBeres. No cost for touring museum.
Jonny Q — Google review
The Robert Wan Pearl Museum in Tahiti provides insights into pearl cultivation through its exhibit, but it feels predominantly like a high-end pearl retail store rather than a pearl museum. While the free admission is a plus, the high prices of the items for sale gives a more commercial vibe.
SALMAN H — Google review
Small free museum about Tahitian pearl cultivation. Mostly, it's a retail store with expensive prices. It takes about 15 minutes to see all the exhibits. 3 small rooms, some videos. Explanations in French and English.
Lee M — Google review
It’s basically a shop with a few exhibits on the side. What’s actually nice is you can also see some really amazing pearls for sale. Parking is a bit challenging.
JeanClaude B — Google review
Worth stopping by if you are in town. Get a chance to learn a thing or two about the history and origin of pearls. Otherwise you can also buy some fine selections here. Finally don’t be afraid to ask the staff questions! They are very friendly and eager to share their knowledge.
Raphael E — Google review
Very informative tour. The guide explained how the pearl was harvested and the exhibits are interesting. It will take you about 15 mins to move around. Spend time to read some articles. And did I mention it's air conditioned - great to escape the afternoon heat for awhile.
Andrew C — Google review
It is more an exhibition next to the shop than a museum, but it is carefully arranged. The history of perls, the "production" and the different qualities are explained. The museum is for free.

Meherio Tahitian Bistro is a new restaurant located on the seafront, offering a delightful dining experience. The steak topped with foie gras and Uru gnocchi are highly recommended specialties. Guests can enjoy beautiful indoor dining with air conditioning or opt for the outdoor bar area overlooking the marina. Visitors praise the friendly service and multilingual staff, making it an excellent choice for tourists.
We came in without a reservation and got seated right away. We did not experience any slow service. In fact it was very fast. The restaurant was busy for a Saturday night with live music (which was good). The fish with vanilla sauce was excellent
K H — Google review
Had a delicious lunch at Meherio in Pape’ete. Our server Tam was lovely, and provided great service, along with local knowledge and recommendations. Tam also kept us entertained with some cheeky humour :) The Polynesian Platter and seafood bowl were great, and the star was the Saumon Risotto - phenomenal.
Raine T — Google review
Meherio Tahitian Bistro is a great spot right on the water in Tahiti. I found some unexpected flavors in the most delightful way. I had their Tuna Sashimi with Olives, Parmesan, and Pizza Seasoning. Yes, you read that right. At first glance, it might sound like a chaotic mix of ingredients… this recipe is coming back to St. Louis with me. The fresh, buttery tuna is at the bottom of the plate, topped with salty bites of olives, the richness of Parmesan, and the surprising addition of a pizza type seasoning, which somehow ties everything together. It shouldn’t work, but it absolutely does.
Sara G — Google review
Loved the ambiance and the profesional service, they were very fast and kind. The food was tasty and also received a complementary bread and olivecream.
Nagy H — Google review
I had to deduct stars because they allow smoking in the restaurant and that is unacceptable and ruined the experience. The food is excellent and has great views. If they would respect people's health and not allow smoking around guests eating I would give a stars.
Wandering R — Google review
Beautiful terrace staff are excellent but food was not something I would go back there for. I ordered the fish and chips the batter was thick and soggy the fish inside was overcooked and had no flavour at all. The fries were fine the mahi mahi starter was ok but quite salty. Prices are high and personally I do not think the meal was worth it. Should have had the traditional poke from the mall.
Qamar G — Google review
The food here is amazing. The views are great.. definitely the the best meal of our trip. The seafood risotto was fantastic.

MANUA Exquisite Tahitian Art is a great gallery that offers beautiful and unique pieces of art such as tiki carvings, ivory/wood carvings, and ukuleles. The staff is kind, helpful, and knowledgeable about the artwork. They provide excellent customer service by answering questions and even allowing visitors to feed their children there. It's a special place where visitors can find fine art and fun objects to remember their trip to paradise.
We saw the amazing Tiki Tattoo at the Four Seasons Bora Bora back in June of 2023. I have anted it ever since but could not make the purchase. We organised with the lovely owner and Laina that we would purchase the Tiki and collect when we were there in Feb of 2025. The quality of product, amazing service of Laina and the entire team and of course the pure joy of taking my exquisite Tiki, made this experience beyond 5 stars. They shipped the tiki from Bora Bora to Papeete at no extra charge. They securely wrapped it and provided all tax refund paperwork. Amazing. So amazing that I bought a second Tiki the following week!

My wife and I greatly enjoyed our time here. We purchased a beautiful tiki and a beautiful ivory/wood carving. We spent a significant amount of time there asking questions. We will continue to return in the future on any future visits.

The James Norman Hall Museum, located in the suburbs of Papeete, is a modest yet captivating tribute to the renowned American author. The museum is housed in the low-roofed property where Hall lived and contains over 3,000 books along with intriguing exhibits such as the author's typewriter and a model of the Bounty. Visitors can also enjoy a terrace-cum-tea room for a relaxing lunch.
What a gem! Well worth traveling by bus or car from Papeete to Arue to tour this house and learn about the Hall family. Easy parking in the small lot right across the street. And if Vivian is there, being shown around by her and hearing her personal stories about the family is a real treat. The museum should have videos with her talks to preserve her valuable knowledge!

A really nice museum for the author of Muriny on the Bounty. We went as part of a tour after disembarking from the cruise ship; I wasn't really into this stop but have to admit I was unexpectedly impressed. James Hall flew with the Escodrille Lafayette, an American volunteer fighter squadron in France 🇫🇷 in WWI. These were some brave, badass dudes risking their lives when they didn't have to. Huge respect for these heroes.

The expo serves as a fantastic venue for various events, offering ample space both indoors and outdoors for exhibitors and visitors alike.

Les 3 Brasseurs is a popular spot located along the waterfront in Tahiti, offering a great experience for visitors. They brew their own selection of five homemade beers, available in various sizes. The staff is friendly and attentive without being overbearing, and the food menu offers a delicious selection of French Polynesian cuisine. The rooftop bar features live music and a DJ, creating a fantastic atmosphere for an evening out.
Came here twice during my trip, both on Saturday nights, and had a great time each visit. The atmosphere is lively, especially with live music kicking off around 9 PM and going strong until midnight. While I didn’t make it to the upstairs bar, the downstairs area had great energy and was the perfect spot to enjoy the night. The drinks were all excellent — I tried the red wine, espresso martinis, and their house-brewed beer, and everything hit the spot. The food was just as good, making it a well-rounded night out. Highly recommend if you’re looking for good vibes, great drinks, and live music in a fun setting!

A crowded bar to enjoy live music. It's quite busy and the waitress takes their time to serve you. The atmosphere is really fun.
Alejandro B — Google review
We had dinner here and absolutely loved it. The Porc Roussillant and Frites de Manioc were both outstanding — crispy pork with rich flavor and perfectly fried cassava fries. They were recommended by our waitress as the chef’s specials, and it was spot on. The craft beer here is easily some of the best in Papeete — smooth, refreshing, and clearly brewed with care. The service was friendly and relaxed, and the staff made us feel welcome. The location right by the pier gives you a beautiful ocean view and an easygoing vibe. When the live music started in the evening, the whole place came alive without feeling too loud or touristy. Overall, this spot perfectly combines great food, local beer, and an authentic island atmosphere. If you’re in Papeete, this is one of those places you shouldn’t skip. 🍻🌴
Liah C — Google review
We stopped in while waiting to get on a cruise because we wanted to try some local beer. I got a flight, which had all their regular beers and a limited edition brewer's special. Their core beers are fine, not my favorite but drinkable. If you're an American IPA drinker, the IPA is not for you. It's much more of a malt-forward British IPA. The standout beer was the brewer's special! I know it changes, but it was by far the most delicious. After my tasting flight I got a pint of it!

What a great place to go for good food! We were looking for a local spot in Tahiti that was walking distance from our hotel and found this popular spot just down the road. There are two levels and we went up to the "Baroof" on te upper level. Great music, amazing service and a fun atmosphere! The pizzas are amazing and the Profiterols are to die for! Soo good. I would recommend this restaurant/bar to anyone looking for a nice night out in Tahiti.

Walked by this place and figured I would give it a try. Amazing staff, delicious food, and relaxing environment. I tried the swordfish (never had it before) and it was delicious, very flavorful, and filling. I also had their crab cake and dessert sampler. I definitely recommend this place and will be back.

We decided to dine here since our cruise ship doesn’t depart until much later. The staff is super friendly and helpful. The prices are well within reason. We ordered the fish ‘ceviche’ in coconut milk and a couple of steaks. Oh and local beers. Soon after we arrived, a life band started playing local music. My wife and I really enjoyed the food and the service was excellent.

Great place for a quick beer, friendly service, food is very good since they changed cooks a few months ago. Tha location is primo. Burger is actually pretty tasty, ordered medium-rare, best burger around these parts. Sashimi and Tartare duo is Fresh Fresh Fresh. Good choice for Dowtown PPT.

Beautiful restaurant, very pleasant service, provided everything we asked for. We had sashimi, tuna tartare, seared tuna, beef steak and everything was delicious. Sashimi with oyster/mustard sauce was just incredible, great piece of fresh tuna. One of few restaurants open on Sunday in Papeete.

Got the breakfast set menu with Tahitian raw fish. Fish was a good texture and I loved the cucumber and tomatoes with it!

This is one of my favorite places to eat in Papeete! My husband & I ate mostly from the daily special options. The Endive salad was simple, elegant & delicious. After our first visit(we went three times during our stay) we ordered anything that came with the Roquefort sauce. Its amazing! On fish or meat….I ate all of it. The atmosphere is perfect. Wait staff were very helpful & kind. They had old 80’s music videos playing on the tv….some I haven’t seen in years & a few you could only see in Europe. The location is great for people watching. It’s an excellent spot to pop in for a few drinks if you need to cool off or take a break from shopping. Anyone who would want to eat a hamburger when there is actual French cuisine available to them needs tapped on the forehead with a tack hammer.
Jane D — Google review
Definitely do not recommend eating here!!! Food was terrible. Worst on the island. Ordered a recommendation chicken sandwich ($20 sandwich) it was the worst one I’ve had in my life. I also took my second bite and had a huge bone in my mouth. There’s better places to eat on the island for sure. We just went here because everything else was closed. This might be a good spot for drinks just not food. It was dark meat and the egg was slimy with no flavor or spice, the whole thing had nothing on it actually. Juice was good but I’m sure it was from a carton. We got the crème brûlée thinking that would be better. No ); it was the worst one I ever had. I had to spit it out. I’ve never done that with a desert before. It was really bad. Wi-Fi also lasted 30 mins. I asked for it before I ordered and they didn’t give it to me and walked away, so I asked someone else because I needed it to translate and she barley gave it to me and wasn’t the nicest server. Don’t recommend this place.

Le Sully is a gem of a restaurant located in Arue, French Polynesia. The dining experience here is fantastic, with amazing food that includes dishes like duck breast souffle, grilled salmon with bernaisse sauce, and profiteroles with salted caramel. Although the service may be a bit slow due to the small dining space, the quality of the food makes up for it.
Favorite restaurant in Papeete. Leek soup was fantastic. Beef Wellington with foie gras was rich and cooked perfectly. Savory soufflé and Vanilla soufflé were the best I’ve ever had. Every menu item was perfect.

Dining highlight of our time in Papeete. Nice menu, well prepared in French fashion. Excellent and fair priced wine list. Lots of fresh fish options. Scallops and fish were superb.
John C — Google review
Highly enjoyable experience. The food was fantastic with good, friendly service. They had a great selection of reasonably priced wines, and a wide selection of food options. We enjoyed both meat and fish options as well as a wonderful simple pasta they made for my daughter. All of it was delicious. This was the best dinner spot we found in Tahiti. The online reservation option made booking a table easy.

Fantastic restaurant in a Papeete backstreet. Super-friendly and helpful staff, they even let us taste some wines so we could make an informed choice. The food was superb. We chose our mains from the day menu (pork and veal) and both were absolutely delicious. The entrees and desserts were excellent too. Also, the chef came out several times to ensure everybody was happy, how often does that happen these days?

Fantastic dining experience at this gem of a restaurant. The food is amazing. The scallops were the best I’ve ever had in my life (including multiple Michelin starred restaurants). My wife’s mahi mahi was equally amazing. One of the best restaurants in all of Tahiti.

Absolutely perfect dinner. I started by ordering the duck breast souffle. This, itself, was a healthy snack - though, I was hungry. I then ordered the grilled salmon with bernaisse sauce. Very highly recommended. Finally, I finished with the profiteroles (salted caramel). Service was a bit slow, but it's to be expected with such a small dining space (10 tables).

Good service. Entrées (parrotfish and duck leg) are solid. Potato leak soup are very tasty. The vanilla souffle is on the sweeter side for my personal liking. Banana souffle crepe is very good.

Terevau offers a seamless and user-friendly experience for travelers looking to book their ferry tickets. While the process is generally straightforward, enhancing the mobile interface would make it even easier, particularly when adding a vehicle to your reservation. The ferries themselves are impressive—spotless and efficient, ensuring a swift journey across the waters. Whether you're commuting or exploring new destinations, Terevau provides an enjoyable travel experience that you won't want to miss!

The Terevau is a good way to get between Tahiti and Moorea. The English part of the website made it easy to buy tickets, which I could print our download electronically. The boarding area and car queue is on the north end of the Pape'ete Ferry Terminal. The boat is comfy enough, with passenger lounges on two decks + a small outside seating area at the back of the ship. There's a snack bar. My experience loading a car was stressful. It's not a roll on/off boat; you drive through a door in the side, into a space with room for about 10 cars. The last few cars, inc. me, had to back up the ramp to fit, while watching for tight clearances and having the crew yell at you. Next time I would try Aremiti for an easier experience. Car passengers have to get out before loading and board separately.
Ian — Google review
I was impressed with Terevau. Not sure if this is true or not, but the staff said that this ferry was the faster one. We boarded at 8:10am to Moorea and came back to Tahiti on the 4.40pm. The waves were slightly choppy. I loved it, but my friend got sick sea. The ferry staff are used to this and have barf bags available. For a car transport and 2 RT tickets were about $122 USD. There are multiple levels, bottom level was quieter and the view is still lovely.

Great ferry experience to get from Tahiti to Moo'rea! The boat is clean and bathroom are also. The food stand is little lacking but the trip is short so no problem

So easy! Walked up 20 or so minutes before the ferry left. Easy to buy a round trip ticket, handed off our larger suitcases, and climbed on board. Very smooth and fast ferry to Moorea in about 30 mins. A little chaos trying to get our luggage back on the trip back to Tahiti a few days later but it was also raining so everyone was trying to squeeze under awnings.

Nestled in the heart of Papeete, Villa THAI is a delightful culinary escape that brings the vibrant flavors of Asia to life. This charming restaurant stands out as a haven for vegetarians, offering an impressive array of authentic dishes that are hard to find elsewhere in the city. Guests rave about their experiences here, often returning for favorites like the rich green curry and flavorful garlic fried rice with tofu. The ambiance is enhanced by a unique no-shoes policy, adding to its cozy charm.
Great place for vegetarians, in a city where finding vegetarian food is pretty hard. I was in Papeete two times and both times I made my way here for a full belly. I ordered the red curry, green curry and garlic fried rice with tofu! Excellent flavor, and good quantity. Pictured: garlic fried rice and green curry with tofu.

The only place in Tahiti my husband and I could find with good vegetarian food that served something else besides pizza. The green curry is amazing. Had so much flavor. Pad thai lacked in flavor. They were able to switch it out for me without any issue. No shoes allowed, which added to the experience in my opinion.
Prianka B — Google review
The place is very authentic Thai. It's best you make a reservation if you'd like to sit in the 2nd floor with the more traditional Thai setting. I only see 1 person working. So far we were moved from downstairs to upstairs and have been here for 20 minutes. We finally get our orders taken. She pardoned herself and told us she is working solo. So, at this point I felt kinda bad. Then, my friend whom I'm dining with mentions he ate there last night and service wasn't too great either. I do have to say our waitress ended up being very nice and sweet. The food was delectable and worth the wait. If you want great tasting Thai food and have patience definitely fine here.

Fautaua Valley is a must-visit in French Polynesia, offering a diverse range of attractions. From lush vegetation and historical ruins to stunning mountain peaks and one of the most impressive waterfalls in the region, this valley has it all. To explore the area, hikers need to obtain a permit from the mayor's office in Papeete. The journey includes an exciting walk to the waterfall, but caution and proper footwear are essential for this adventure.
You need a permit from the mayor's office to hike up the valley, but it is well worth the journey. There is a little of everything: beautiful vegetation, historical ruins (fort and marae), mountain peaks, and one of the most impressive waterfalls in all of French Polynesia
Paul P — Google review
This is NOT a normal hike. If you go to the waterfall, be prepared for something that will test your endurance, your penchant for suffering and your sense of direction. I have never done anything like it and I've hiked trails around the world. You need a permit to hike to the waterfall, and there's a good reason. The trail stops being marked about halfway through. You have to cross the river several times, and there are NOT designated crossings. You have to jump across stones, logs and wade through the water. There are several areas you'll need to climb the rocks. Some have support, some don't. Bring a change of clothes and be sure you have a way to keep your cellphone dry. It also takes about 5 hours round trip, if you're moving quickly, so leave plenty of time to get back before sundown. I'm telling you, do not play around with this trail. It's not for the faint of heart. At all. It was an adventure unlike anything I've ever experienced before.
Big D — Google review
Great place for a walk, gets pretty exciting if you continue to the water fall. Proceed with caution and a license from the town hall in Papeete. For the waterfall walk good footwear is essential. Good situational awareness, track finding, common sense required.

La Saigonnaise is a Vietnamese restaurant in Papeete that may not offer the most genuine Vietnamese cuisine. The wait staff lacks knowledge about traditional dishes like Pho, yet they still serve a delicious beef pho. Despite this inconsistency, the overall taste of all their dishes is exceptional, making it a top choice for authentic Vietnamese food in Papeete. This restaurant is highly regarded by families, who particularly enjoy their porc au caramel and nems.
C'est vraiment très bon! I had the Vietnamese Omelette and fresh Spring Rolls. Wonderful!! This would be a go to spot for me if I lived here.

horrible service if you’re not a local/regular. it took 1.5 hrs for our food to come and we were blatantly ignored by the waitstaff. they were quick to serve the regulars who came after us and got their food within 15 minutes of being there. the food was decent, but definitely not worth the annoyance and extremely slow pace from the staff.

We went greeted with a friendly Ia Orana and then she started speaking in french where I apologized saying sorry I can't speak french. So she said oh tourist! We should have turned around at that point and left. We ordered our food and watched 3 other tables come in after us. 1 table was a large party. Everyone there was served before us, and 2 tables finished their food before they brought us our meal. The Pho was absolutely horrible it smelled like wet spoiled cat food. I could not eat it. My husband said his food was okay. Mind you, I thought maybe it was me, so I had my husband try it. He told me not to eat it, it was spoiled! That it was awful. It took over an hour to get our food. When including us, there were 4 people at that time of order. When the other tables came in, there was a total of 12 people. We were getting ready to leave when they brought it out. I would not recommend this place to anyone. This was totally based on our true experience, not just a judgment that is suggested by the owner. It's nice to see that there is no rebuttal on how you treat tourists. I will add that the owner needs to realize they have an issue since this has happened before. Look at the reviews. We dined in Mid may.

Hands down the best meal we had in Tahiti. Everything was so incredibly good. The bone marrow escargot duo is one of the best things I have ever eaten. We also had steak and duck, both incredibly delicious. Great service, great wine choices and overall well priced for quality and portions.

They opened for food at 1830. Menu was also in English. I had the Rack of Pork, which was absolutely delicious. The rest in our group enjoyed their selections but were jealous of my Iberian Pork. The sauce that came with it was incredible. Service was outstanding! They gave us a big table in the back corner, with some AC and the live band was very good and not too loud. We will definitely come back.

We visited this place for a late lunch and found the restaurant empty. We ordered the pork and the steak—unfortunately, the pork was undercooked, and the steak arrived a little bloody despite requesting it medium-well. On a positive note, portion sizes were generous for the price point. We skipped drinks but enjoyed the pistachio crème brûlée, which was delicious.

When we got to the restaurant we weren't allowed to sit inside. They claimed they were cleaning it and it wasn't being cleaned at all. So we had to sit outside among people who were smoking cigarettes, which wasn't ideal when trying to eat. The service was very slow and it took at least 20 minutes for our order to be taken and it wasn't busy. The person who was serving us seemed like he didn't want to be at work and wasn't friendly. I dont know if it was because we dont speak French or what, but he wasn't pleasant. I ordered the Mahi Mahi dumplings, and they left a lot to be desired flavor wise. They were underseasoned or missing something I just can't put my finger on. My husband had a burger and fries, which he did enjoy. The dessert was delicious, and I would eat that every day. I just wish my main course was better. Overall, it was just ok and definitely not the best restaurant in Tahiti.

During my recent adventure in French Polynesia, I had the pleasure of dining at Maru Maru, a hidden gem that truly elevated my culinary experience. After an unforgettable Windstar Cruise, I was eager to indulge in local flavors and this spot did not disappoint. The freshness and vibrant flavors of the shared entrée and mains created a gastronomic delight that lingered on my palate.
Outstanding meal of our French Polynesia holiday. Everything about this meal was first rate and after being on a Windstar Cruise that was saying something. The flavours and freshness of the food made the shared entree and two mains we ordered a gastronomic experience. The service wasn't impeccable, with the owner explaining in detail all the dishes which we really appreciated as our French is limited. Also had a lovely rose and Sauvignon Blanc to accompany the meal. All at very good prices for the quality. Cannot recommend highly enough

Small intimate setting with warm welcoming Polynesian hospitality. Each dishes are sophisticatedly presented with distinct flavors. Make a reservation if possible as we were lucky to go in right around the opening time and got the last seat. Most people came after us had a reservation. Freshness, flavors, and service all five stars. Like others have mentioned, each dishes are about 3,000 xpf.

Truly exceptional culinary experience, the food here was delectable! One of the best meals I’ve ever had, each dish is crafted impeccably and made with fresh and local ingredients. They’re a quaint French Polynesian mom and pop shop with only two people running it so arrive with patience, but this spot is definitely worth the visit. Absolutely delicious!

We didn’t like the restaurant. First, it took forever for someone to take our order, and then we waited even longer for the food. The menu was only in French. Out of everything we ordered, the only thing I liked was miso soup with Foie Gras. My fish was terrible—completely inedible! Ron’s duck was okay. We paid $140 for dinner, which is affordable compared to Miami prices, but we honestly regretted going to that restaurant.

My wife and I had a fabulous dinner at Maru Maru August 19. It was our last night in French Polynesia after 10 days there and it was by FAR the best meal we had. I think the dish I had for dinner - Choucroute de la Mer - may have been the best dish I have had this year. Our waiter was terrific - patient, friendly and professional. Just a great experience I highly recommend. If possible, I would love to get the chef's recipe for the Choucroute.

If you have time to spare, it could be memorable. Especially, if you have never been on a cruise or similar voyage before. Or hate being on ship for days on out, as I do. This journey could strike just the right balance for you as it did to me. The seats are comfortable enough and breakfast is served on board. Self purchased of course. The ship moves significantly faster than I was expecting it to move. If you hate the sun in a closed cabin through the window, sit on the left side of the ship. On the other hand, if you don't want to sit, Take plenty of sunscreen with you. Then, definitely walk out onto the sun deck and take in the breathtaking visuals of the Pacific and it's precious blue water. Throughout the journey, it stops at 5 or so islands along the way. Each island is more beautiful than before. None of the islands are out of the way to Bora Bora. They are along the way.

This is a great way to get to Moorea from Tahiti. Be sure to go DOWN STAIRS to get your tickets. Best to get them at the station. The website booking was difficult for me.

Great experience, everything went smooth. Bought the tickets online then presented myself at the boarding area, dropped the baggage and then proceeded for boarding. The inside is very clean and organized, with AC, has toilets and a snack bar (sandwhiches, pastry, drinks, sweets). Can pay by card or cash.

I took the Aremiti 2 and not the express. It is a 45 minute ferry ride to Moorea. This ferry is a little bit more expensive than the other ferries but have more options to fit schedule,

This is the ferry service from Pape’ete to Moorea and back. This is the express service Aramiti 5 and 6. Crossing in about 30 min. Takes cars as well. No crossing after dark so plan accordingly. Decent price, nice cafe onboard. Comfortable seats with plenty of space. Boarding was simple. Just wait around the gate and go in when gate opens. Buying tickets was straightforward. Most people at counter speak English as well. Crossing can be rough at times. One of our crossing was difficult to walk down the isles. There are handles in the bathrooms for a reason, lol. I had to “tripod” (feet spread with head on wall) to use the urinal and even then it was a challenge, lol. One lady go seasick but she was the only one I saw and she said she get seasick real easy. Quickest option to cross to Moorea and back.

Great ferry to/from Tahiti to other islands. We just went over to Mo’orea. Everything went well on the quick 30 trip. Almost on time departure and arrival…within 5 minutes of schedule. Easy on/easy off. Embarkation and debarkation is via stairs but they do have a lower level for those who can’t manage the staircase. We saw a lot birds, too!! Highly recommend.

A great ferry service between Tahiti and Moorea. Booked it online and ticket can be used for any time departure. It runs multiple times a day and is on time. There is a cafe on the terminal which has good snacks. Also a cafe on the ferry. We tried the chocolate cookie on the cafe in the ferry which was delicious. The ride is about 30 min. The ferry is clean and comfortable multiple seating options. The ride is smooth and affordable. The staff is friendly. You check large bags at no additional cost. Best way to travel between Tahiti and Moorea.

Clean, efficient ferry service. I took the ferry round trip from Papeete to Moorea. No need to prebook many options for transport times during the day. Staff was welcoming during boarding process. I checked a bag, I felt a little uncomfortable just dropping my bag with no real security process so I didn’t leave any valuables. The ride was only 30mins, I didn’t use the restroom but they were readily available. Some people brought lunch and ate onboard. The seats are comfortable, plenty windows with great views and with such a large vessel, I did not feel crowded (travel during March).

Vaima Shopping Center is a modern architectural marvel with a diverse range of shops, from traditional to contemporary, as well as cozy coffee shops and restaurants. The three-floor center offers an interesting selection of goods for tourists. Visitors can enjoy street food options that provide a cheap and quick dining alternative. The shopping center also features colorful murals by the Spanish artist Okuda, adding an artistic touch to the ambiance. While parking space in the garage is limited, there are public parking options nearby.
Great shopping center (three floors) with nice shops from traditional to modern as well coffeeshops and restaurants around. Note: There are stairs to climb - the escalators were out of order at our visits - but there is a working lift. Parking space in garage is limited, so I would recommend you plan visit in morning hours. But a few walking minutes away you will find public parking (fee).

This is just street food, a cheap alternative to a sit down restaurant. NOTHING fancy, nothing special. It is always busy with the locals. If you want fast food but decent food this is your place. Again this is a no frills kind of place. Just basic food at reasonable prices. There is no seating here so prepare to carry your food away or stand there and eat it.

A short walk from the Marché de Papeete (the Papeete Market) and past the Papeete Cathedral is the Vaima Center. This virtually takes up a whole block from Avenue du General de Gaulle opposite McDonald's and Boulevard de la Reine Romare IV on the waterfront side. For a shopping mall it's small by western standards, so much so that I really wouldn't call it a shopping mall but the Vaima Center is the largest building and the largest shopping center in the city of Papeete. It has 60 shops and some 40 businesses. There are food outlets and a number of retail stores, souvenirs shops, clothes and a number of Tahitian pearl jewellery stores. It also has an internet cafe with strong WiFi which can be useful to tourists. It's not much to look at from the back side but it's quite a nice looking complex from the seafront side. Worth a visit.

Excellent experience at Downtown Papeete Avis location... only three blocks from cruise ship terminal. Nice air conditioned office. Good advice about island tourist sites and vehicle operation from efficient Agent "Gilda". Easy car return. Gas station for tank refill just one block away. Have used this Avis location several times over past years... always great. Thank you Gilda... Merci.

Avis Papeete was really expensive, had to get a last minute rental due to my other rental falling through and ended up being 3x the amount. There was also an increase in the price quoted to the price charged - wasn't really impressed was giving extortion vibes even though the lady serving me was beautiful, in the end I just wanted to get out on the road. We racked it up to our 'lost in translation' moments. If I did it again, I would use another company as we had good car rental experiences on the outer islands and 1/8th of the price charged in Tahiti.
Kelly T — Google review
Super helpful staff and good quality cars with automatics available. On the slightly pricier side but better to be safe on an island (with unfamiliar surroundings). Biggest plus is that they offer a shuttle service to wherever you need to go after dropping your car back

Excellent experience at Downtown Papeete Avis. Only three blocks from the cruise ship terminal. I reserved a manual since no automatic was available at the time of booking. They managed to give me an automatic for the same price (free upgrade). Friendly staff. Easy car return. The car (a Chinese brand) had a transmission problem, but they explained that this type of car had a lot of problems and would be sold pretty soon. Having a car allowed for a great tour of the island. Thanks!

Last year my family and I went through a very difficult and traumatic experience when we were rear-ended by a drunk driver while in Tahiti. In the middle of all that stress and uncertainty, Avis Tahiti stepped in and showed us incredible care. They didn’t just handle the rental details — they took care of us as people. They treated my family with kindness, respect, and genuine concern, and they went above and beyond to help make things right. It’s rare to encounter a company that shows such compassion during such a hard moment, and I’ll always remember the way Avis Tahiti supported us. Their service wasn’t just professional, it was personal and heartfelt. I can’t recommend them highly enough.

Hired a small car from this location and then dropped it off at the airport for an extra $30AUD approx. The staff were friendly and helpful. The car was very economical, and petrol didn't end up costing that much $20AUD (Oct 22) to travel to Teahupo'o and to waterfall NW of Papeete. There is a Shell Petrol Station around the corner, which accepts credit cards (most shops accept cards). We took the car on the Terevau ferry to Moorea (need to be very good at parking in a tiny space). This was a good idea in the end, since the Moorea Avis is closed on a Sunday and some people got stuck without transport (buses are not frequent). The airport drop-off location was a bit confusing, as the directions/diagram on the paper were not accurate. The car was checked over by a staff member, and then we were given the ok. No problems, as we had taken out SCDW full cover insurance + tyres. Tip: After entering main airport gate, drive through 1st gate on the left and then drive further down to the 2nd gate next to 2nd hut (smaller hut, not the big one) near the other end of the car park, which is opposite the Avis office to drop off the car. Give the car park ticket to Avis staff member. Overall, it was a good experience. I would hire a car from them again :)

I made a direct reservation at the downtown location for a small automatic car a couple of weeks in advance and had no problems with the reservation in the mid afternoon on a Wednesday upon arrival at the downtown location. Staff were friendly and helpful. Car was new, clean and hybrid. We used the Honda Jazz for 48 hours mostly around Tahiti Iti mainly Taravao to Tautira and Teahupo'o with no issues. Only needed to fill up 1400 francs gas after the journey. The young woman "in training" M was extremely kind and empathetic. The staff would not call us a taxi after unfortunately but dropped us at a taxi stand without explaining that taxis do not actually stop at the taxi stand! Fortunately a kind lady working at a nearby restaurant noticed us standing there and told us to ask someone at the tourist office to help. The kind people at the tahiti tourism office nearby called us a taxi instead. That took about an hour extra to get away from Avis!

If you're looking for an unforgettable adventure in Tahiti, look no further than Ia ora na Tahiti Expéditions. They offer a range of tours, including full-day private excursions that delve deep into the stunning Papenoo Valley. With knowledgeable guides like Teuai and Tehui, you'll not only explore breathtaking landscapes filled with waterfalls but also immerse yourself in the rich Polynesian culture. Guests rave about the delicious traditional foods prepared during these trips and appreciate the informative insights shared by their guides.
Although half day and open group tours are options, we did two full day private tours of the Papenoo Valley with Teuai of Ia Or Na Expeditions during pre-cruise visits to Tahiti; once with friends in September 2023 and once with family in May 2024. As our repeat business suggests, we really enjoy the excursion. Teuai is a very pleasant man who is extremely proud of being Polynesian and enthusiastic about sharing his extensive knowledge of the culture with others. The interior of Tahiti after the short drive out of Papeete is beautiful and serene. Delicious local fruit is set out for lunch with option to stop and pickup something more substantial to add to it if desired. Highly recommend!

We loved our day with tour guide Teuai, he was so knowledgeable and generous with sharing Tahitian histories. A really good tour to choose if you want a good cultural experience. We loved swimming in the waterfall and eating Tahitian foods too and learning about Tahitian tattoo's. Beautiful scenery. An awesome day that'll I'll remember forever! Thank you Teuai!

We went on the full day Vaihiria tour with Teuai and it was amazing! We saw so many amazing views, learned so much about Polynesian culture and history, and Teuai even prepared some traditional Polynesian foods for us to try as well as fresh fruit. Great way to spend a day in Tahiti, would recommend to anyone who is comfortable with bumpy rides as the tour is mostly on unpaved roads. We had a blast though!

Cannot recommend this company with guide Tehui enough for the 8 hour expedition of Papenoo Valley. The natural beauty was unreal, we saw tons of waterfalls and even swam in one, he prepared traditional Polynesian foods for us, and we learned so much about the local culture. The best cultural and nature experience on the island, and such great value for money. Lots of companies offer similar tours, but Tehui is the secret sauce of this one!

We booked our client's onshore excursion with Iaorana Tahiti Expeditions. Terri was pertinent in responses and shared detailed information about the island to satisfaction. We booked the Papenoo Vaihiria an Adrenaline shaking experience and, at the same time, a magnificent. Travelers were very excited and could not wait to return to the ship and share the experience. If you are cruising in Tahiti, this company is the best bet.

We had a fantastic experience - a drive down rural roads deep into the interior of Tahiti with a guide well versed in the old ways - showing us a culture once lost, but slowly being rediscovered. Beautiful temple! It’s owned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. You need to be a worthy member of the church and have a temple recommend from your church leader to be able to enter. Inside members of the church make covenants with God. It’s a holy place.

Great trip, whales that took us very far from our departure. Great day and very cool team. I liked it less and was even shocked because the pilot really charged full throttle on the group (there were several adults and a baby) who were going along the reef, cut them off a few meters in front and quickly threw us into the water to see them. We saw them well but frankly, what a lack of respect. I will not do another outing with them, too bad, they were super nice.

We arrived on a cruise today and this company cancelled our whale watching tour because of “bad weather” but there isn’t bad weather and they said they are still sending boats out. They even said they would “try to find room for us on the boat that’s going out”, even though we had a confirmed booking from months ago. So clearly if they are still sending boats out then the weather isn’t too bad. When I asked for an explanation to why they actually cancelled our booking, they gave no response. Thanks for ruining our only day in Tahiti. Never use this company.

Heed this warning! Our anticipation for the “Tahiti by Boat” whale-watching excursion turned into a debacle. Having booked two days ahead on TripAdvisor, our reservation frustratingly hung in ‘pending’ status. Despite seeking confirmation directly from the tour operator at the dock where the tour leaves from upon arrival in Tahiti, we were vaguely told the approval was underway online. Anxiety kicked in on the day of the excursion because upon awakening early that morning, our booking was still unconfirmed, and to our dismay, the official site listed a different starting time than TripAdvisor. In a rushed bid to secure our plans, we navigated the partially French official website, canceling with trip advisor and rebooking there amidst language barriers. However, chaos ensued at the dock. The friendly captain, despite his limited English, conveyed that our names were missing from the list, and shockingly, the actual departure was at 9 am, not 6:30 or 7 am as previously indicated. Several other tourists were caught in this confusion as well and some were already charged! Stranded, with our tight Tahiti itinerary, we were left high and dry as all alternative whale-watching tours were fully booked or inconveniently located. This fiasco effectively spoiled our limited time on the island! To future whale enthusiasts: Pre-book far in advance, insist on direct, clear confirmation, and consider other reliable operators to escape such a disheartening snafu.

They canceled my tour twice, once for weather although other operators didn't cancel, and once because they didn't have enough customers. In the end I did not get to do my #1 activity in Tahiti. Very disappointed.

We just returned from an awesome afternoon on the water with Alan. Such a friendly guide who took us to 3 beautiful places. We were lucky enough to swim with fish, turtles and rays. Booking was very straight forward and even with children, we always felt very safe. Having such a friendly, helpful guide just topped off a wonderful and memorable day. Highly recommended.

The whale watching experience was amazing, we could see the whale during the trip and also swim with them. Indeed after calling at least 5 times to obtain information to renew my identity card, I was told to come with the documents (because the website to pre-fill everything does not work). When I got there, they refused my documents because I only have them in digital format and they REQUIRE them in paper form (LONG LONG LIVE THE ENVIRONMENT, THANK YOU TOWN HALL FOR TAKING CARE OF OUR PLANET!!!) and of course they refuse to print them for so I left empty-handed and I will be able to go back hoping that this time I was given the correct information and that I will not have to come back a third time. Nestled at the entrance of Papeete, the Maison de la Culture stands as a vibrant hub dedicated to preserving and celebrating Polynesian traditions. This cultural gem hosts spectacular Ori Tahiti dance performances that captivate audiences with their beauty and grace. Each year, it also plays host to an international ukulele festival, showcasing the instrument's rich heritage and traditional rhythms. As you stroll along the scenic waterfront, you'll find yourself drawn towards Paofai Gardens—a serene oasis perfect for unwinding amidst nature.
Check their website for special shows/events. We watched the best traditional dance festival from here. Cost for tickets were surprisingly inexpensive. Note seats are very narrow and similar to stadium seating so be prepared or just buy 2 seats for yourself 😉

Did a walking tour and learned that Pape'ete, the capital of French Polynesia, holds profound historical, cultural, and religious significance as the political, economic, and spiritual heart of Tahiti and its surrounding islands. Pape'ete became the administrative center of French Polynesia after France declared a protectorate over Tahiti in 1842. The city was officially founded in 1843 and later served as a key naval and trade port during the colonial era. Its harbor facilitated European influence, including the arrival of missionaries and the integration of French governance . During the 20th century, Pape'ete was indirectly affected by France’s nuclear testing in the Tuamotu Archipelago 1962–1996. The city became a focal point for protests and political movements advocating for autonomy and environmental justice, shaping modern Polynesian identity . In recent decades, Pape'ete has been central to efforts to revive indigenous traditions, such as the annual Heiva i Tahiti festival, which celebrates Polynesian dance, music, and sports like outrigger canoe racing. The festival originated in the 19th century and was revitalized to counteract colonial cultural erosion . The city hosts vibrant markets like Le Marché, where traditional Polynesian arts—such as tapa cloth made from bark, woven pandanus items, and black pearl jewelry—are sold. These crafts reflect ancestral techniques preserved despite colonial influences . Pape'ete is the epicenter of Ori Tahiti Tahitian dance, characterized by rapid hip movements and drumming. The dance was historically tied to religious rituals and storytelling, and today it’s performed competitively during Heiva . The word tattoo derives from the Tahitian tatau, and Pape'ete hosts the Tatau i Tahiti Tattoonesia Festival, where traditional Polynesian tattooing symbolizing social status and spiritual protection is celebrated . Traditional Polynesian spirituality, centered on mana spiritual power and ancestor worship, blended with Christianity after missionaries arrived in the 19th century. Sites like Marae Arahurahu an ancient temple coexist with churches, reflecting this fusion . Protestant missionaries from the London Missionary Society LMS and later Catholic settlers established churches in Pape'ete. The LMS’s translation of the Bible into Tahitian 1840 preserved the language and shaped modern religious practices . Today, Pape'ete’s population is predominantly Christian Protestant and Catholic, with churches playing a central role in community life. Religious festivals, such as Easter, often incorporate Polynesian chants and dances . Marae Ta’ata Ancient ceremonial sites near Pape'ete, used for rituals honoring gods like Oro and Hiro . Musée de Tahiti et des Îles Showcases Polynesian history, from precontact navigation to colonial impacts . NotreDame Cathedral A symbol of the Catholic influence in the city . Pape'ete’s significance lies in its role as a bridge between Polynesia’s ancestral past and its modern identity, blending indigenous traditions with colonial and global influences. For deeper exploration, visit its museums, marae, and festivals like Heiva .

When you embark on your adventure in French Polynesia, make sure to stop by the Tourist Office in Papeete. This welcoming hub is not only air-conditioned but also boasts a friendly and smiling staff ready to assist you with all your travel needs. After recent renovations, it has become an inviting space where visitors can gather valuable information about local attractions, dining options, and must-see spots around Tahiti and Moorea.
Very very helpful with information and suggestions for our planned week + stay in Papeete. For dining, touristic places and driving around Tahiti and visiting Moorea. Very helpful and recommended.

In fact, total ignorance of the May programs. She searched on her computer while we asked her questions. Today I went to the May fair but not thanks to her, she must not know about it. And at the end of May, there will be Marquesan crafts, and dance school competitions... but the young woman who (badly) received us today (with condescension) doesn't know that either. Very kind, helpful team on duty when I went in. I was asking a very out of the box / unusual question, but they discussed it with me to make sure they understood what I wanted, then between themselves to make sure they were giving me the best possible information... And they delivered beyond my hopes! So glad I stopped in to ask for help.

Papeete Port is a bustling hub for cruise ships, with plans for a new terminal to enhance the experience for passengers. The port boasts a variety of vessels, offering picturesque views of the surrounding islands. While ongoing construction aims to improve navigation and amenities, visitors can still enjoy the nearby tourism information office. Additionally, Papeete Port features a beautiful park with clean facilities, making it an ideal spot for families and friends to gather.

A spacious port with lots of vessels both private and commercial berthing. Quite a beautiful spot and from a cruise ship you can see very far to the islands which is absolutely stunning! It’s reasonable to navigate however there were a lot of works going on when we were there (it definitely needs a little upgrade as the walkways were gravel and quite bumpy - some people found it a little difficult if you went the wrong way to the street). Port officials were professional but not super conversational or smiley. It is conveniently close to many eateries and shops for those who want to see somethings without venturing far.

Found Studios Painapo on AirBnb off of Rue Charles Viénot and turns out there are several larger/smaller units priced at similar rates. We stayed at the Manava in 2020 and wanted to try something closer to the ferry on our return 2023 trip. Host was super communicative and checked in on us in the days leading up to our trip and also the day of our trip (connect to wifi at airport if you don't have cell service). Our taxi driver from the airport was familiar with Studios Painapo and took us there for 3000 xpf. 1st door was super easy to get into. 2nd door, you have to pull on the handle and turn the key (you need both hands free to do this) in order to get it to open. Unit was nice and more modern than we expected. We felt safe even though the street isn't so well lit. Street noise will keep you up if you're a light sleeper. ***We would stay here again especially since it's close to some of the downtown bars and market. Took us 10 mins to walk to the ferry from our studio and we would stay here again given the price of hotels are double.***

Come back in a perfect catamaran.. despite the swell on the way back.. very good management by the captain. Catamaran shuttle - Perfect Motu.. great experience in maneuvers, nothing to say. Big downside: the "visit" with the hostess (a replacement) on the motu when she doesn't know the tricks, the history.... Group of 25 people too far away which makes me bring up the rear to wait for my 10 year old daughter, very impressed by the swell up to mid-knee.. Fortunately I'm there to guide the whole group on a crossing path... thanks to a map stored on my phone. Summary: impeccable exit... security side on the motu... It leaves to be re-examined.
