Ayacucho Cathedral, built in 1612, is a magnificent structure located in the heart of Peru. This grand edifice dominates the Main Square and showcases a blend of baroque and neoclassical architectural elements. The city itself is steeped in history and boasts a rich colonial charm with numerous architectural gems and ancient ruins.
Beautiful cathedral. Amazing views from the top just for 3 soles. Highly recommended.

(Translated by Google) The Ayacucho Cathedral (also known as the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Mary) is the principal Baroque cathedral in the city of the same name. It is owned by the Catholic Church and was declared a National Historical and Cultural Heritage of Peru in 1972. [1] [2] Located in the Plaza de Armas, its construction began in 1632 and was completed in 1672. It is the largest cathedral in the country, as it is the main temple. The details of its construction are countless, and one particularly curious one is the presence of two small figures hidden at the top of the bell of the left tower, as if observing the city from above. Overall, the building has three naves, 18 columns supporting eight arches, 16 high vaults, 22 windows, and a beautiful triangular dome with an octagonal base. The architectural style of the façade is Seismicist Baroque. It is the only temple in the city that has three entrance doors on the front, where there are two statues representing the apostles Saint Peter and Saint Paul.

(Translated by Google) The imposing Cathedral of Ayacucho, also known as the Basilica Catedral de Santa María, is an outstanding example of colonial architecture and stands directly on the Plaza Mayor – a must-see for art and culture enthusiasts. It was built between 1632 and 1672 by royal decree of the Spanish King Felipe III and declared a national cultural heritage site in 1972. The facade is deliberately simple, but the interior reveals an overwhelming wealth of detail: ten retablos decorated with gold leaf, including the famous retablos of the Virgen de Socos, the Señor de Burgos, and the Niño Llorón.

La Compañía de Jesús, also known as the Church of the Company of Jesus, is a Baroque-style church built in the 17th century. It features a single nave and is adorned with intricate flower designs on its walls. Located near the main square, it boasts a stunning facade with a harmonious blend of leaden and pink hues. The church's unique towers add to its distinctive charm.

Joel C — Google review
(Translated by Google) The Church of La Compañía de Jesús is undoubtedly one of Ayacucho's architectural highlights, impressing with its baroque façade and the richly detailed altars inside. The wood carvings and colonial architecture, in particular, make it an important part of the city's cultural identity. However, the building appears to be in need of renovation in some areas – some interior areas are poorly lit or poorly preserved. Also, some explanatory signs or information about the church's history and significance are missing, making it difficult for visitors to fully grasp its cultural context. Nevertheless, it's a place worth seeing, especially for history-loving travelers – with a little more maintenance and better visitor information, the experience would be even more impressive.

The Museo de la Memoria, also known as the Museum of Memory, is a haunting museum in Ayacucho that commemorates the impact of Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path) in Peru. The museum vividly portrays the city's deep-seated connection to the conflict through eyewitness accounts and poignant displays, including a montage of photos depicting mothers and children affected by the fighting.
Latin America has suffered greatly with all major civil conflicts. It is a great place to know more about the real history of MRTA, Sendero Luminoso and the Armed forces of the Peruvian Government back in the 80s and 90s. Horrible things happened to innocent people: women, children, adults were burned in brick ovens by the Armed forces. Sendero also is responsible for a lot of killings.
Ragnar L — Google review
As of June 2025, the cost of admission is 5 soles. I was expecting to be there about half an hour but I was actually there for 2 hours. I spent the first hour by myself looking at the exhibits. They have a QR code on the wall that you can use to listen to descriptions in English. They also have written translations on most exhibits. The person in charge gave us approximately 45 minutes of explanation by voice in Spanish. Try to read about what happened during this period in Peru's history and you will enjoy the museum more.
Maynard D — Google review
Very impressive. I remember the name lightened parh from the past, but never realized what has really happened. This place mainly tells the story of all familymembers, still searching.for their relatives.
Cor P — Google review
Small but very moving museum, dedicated to the human toll of the conflict between the Shining Path and state armed forces and the violence and brutality of each side. Most but not all of the information is translated in English so I recommend the audio guide (available for free via a QR code at the entrance) for more context on the origins of the conflict, and the photos/objects on display.

Important museum in Ayacucho, revisiting the recent history of the region with its consequences. Highly recommended for all those interested in Peruvian history and social/political complexity.
Giuseppe Z — Google review
A small museum with personal accounts of victims of the violence of the 80s and 90s. Includes victims of both the SP and government. Small and totally in Spanish but worth seeing. LUM in Lima is a bigger, stronger account
Thomas B — Google review
Some really interesting facts, it shows how badly both the Sendero Luminoso and the Peruvian army treated the population back then. It could be a bit more elucidating and a bit more well explained for someone who's new to the subject. I still liked it though.
Ana D — Google review
It was very interesting but i highly reccomend you read about the situation beforehand on the internet for context. Maybe it's because of my limited spanish but it was kind of confusing. It's mostly anecdotes and personal stories, but it doesn't explain how it happened, or how it resolved. Again, interesting, but hard to follow unless you're peruvian and learned about it growing up.

Beautiful place which tells the story of one of the first "maestro de los retablos". It takes you through his life and successes making his art and getting recognized and rewarded for his work.
