Konpira Grand Theater, also known as Kanamaruza Theater, is Japan's oldest kabuki playhouse, dating back to 1835. Although it was once a cinema, it has been restored beautifully and now offers sporadic shows while being open for daily visits. The theater features a fascinating backstage area with a revolving-stage mechanism, basement trapdoors, and a tunnel leading to the front of the theater. English-speaking volunteer guides are sometimes available to provide insights into the theater's features.
Fantastic. The oldest kabuki theater in Japan features a lot of hidden details and things to discover. You can move freely but the guides on-site will tell you a lot of great stories and share their background knowledge.
Taku N — Google review
Kompira Grand Theatre "Kanamaru-za" is a must see in Shikoku, Japan. The theatre was built almost 200 years ago and is still used as a living stage for Kabuki plays in the spring. During the off Kabuki performances, you can visit the backstage area and see the interesting mechanisms of the man-powered structures. If you are visiting Kotohira-gu Shrine (Kompira-san), be sure to stop by.
Miki U — Google review
Of course the Konpira Grand Theatre in itself is magnificent, a very interesting showcase of traditional architecture, craftsmanship, and art. But for me the highlight of the visit was the volunteer guide who showed me around the place, blending Japanese and English, to the best of his abilities, explaining plenty of little details the ordinary visitor would never notice alone.
Emiel H — Google review
Must see if you’re around the area! The oldest Kabuki theatre in Japan. You can see how the theater work and functions, even go to the backstage and under to see how the special effect works! If you’re there in April, you might be lucky enough to see an actual show!
Moz — Google review
We were fortunate to get tickets to the spring Kabuki performance (April 2024). What a treat! The male performers, the musicians, singers, stage hands that manually moved the props, all were stunning. If you don't understand Japanese (like us), read up on the play beforehand so you can at least follow the plotline. The dance number at the end featured a high-flying act that was extra special. This was a once-in-a-lifetime event - highly recommended!
Mindy L — Google review
Very good historical building with wooden structure. Only one japanese performance every April. Good guided tour by the volunteer~theatre security. Clear explanation and you are welcome to walk through the auditorium, stage area, under stage area and dressing room.
Barbar S — Google review
Perfect place to see kabuki with many nearby shops and restaurants to explore afterwards
Maegan M — Google review
This is the oldest Japanese kabuki theater in Japan, built in 1835! The ticket costs 500 jpy per person, but once inside you can walk around freely and see the different rooms at the back, too, not only the stage and audience seats. Don't forget to take a look at all the mechanisms below the ground, eg the mawari butai revolving stage! If you can speak Japanese I highly recommend asking the local guide (free of charge) to explain some of the features. We were lucky enough that the guide was there today and he kindly took around 30 minutes to show us around and tell us some interesting stories related to the place.

Udon noodle restaurant
Kompira Udon is a delightful destination for those seeking traditional udon dishes in a charming, old-fashioned setting. This noodle house offers an array of udon soups and other classic staples that are sure to satisfy any craving. Diners can enjoy unique variations like the Tori tempura cold soy sauce udon, which features a generous portion topped with grated daikon, ginger, spring onions, and crispy tempura bits.
Fantastic udon! I had the Tori (chicken) tempura cold soy sauce udon. The portion is a decent size for the price 720 yen. The Udon comes topped with grated daikon, ginger, sliced spring onions and crispy tempura bits. The waitress adds a bit of soy sauce and tells you to add your own bit by bit so it isn't too salty. At first it tasted a bit bland but as you mix the ingredients and soy sauce the flavours start to blend and on a hot day, this was the perfect lunch. Cool and refreshing with all of the ingredients working well together. The chicken tempura was well marinated and was juicy and tender as well. The aburage for our kids' kitsune Udon was huge and tasty as well. Well recommended.
Matt W — Google review
Pros: fast service, and proximity to the entrance. Cons: shared tables and a customer coughing on a wet and cold day. There are a few similar udon restaurants nearby. One located slightly farther up was quieter and less crowded. Udon is similar to fast-food chain food. It's easy to prepare with simple ingredients and doesn't last until the next meal. Therefore, I recommend choosing a less crowded restaurant.
Travel L — Google review
An authentic sanuki udon shop. The udon was thick, soft and delicious. There is a special seat which once appeared in the Chibi Maruko-chan anime.
Sarasate E — Google review
Decent udon for a decent price. Gets a bit busy but a great way to rejuvenate after a visit to the temple!
Nicholas P — Google review
We tried both udon in soup and stirred. The stirred udon is served with a raw egg, chopped spring onion, garlic, shaved dry fish. That altogether made up a most tasty experience. Shop is popular, but service was efficient and friendly.
George W — Google review
The udon is very nice and tasty especially with soy sauce. The tempura is also nice. I like very like chicken tempura. Good service and reasonable price.

The hot noodles with soy sauce was good, but the bean skin was too sweet. Nice udon restaurant here.

I had the hot udon noodles without broth and some tempura and tofu on the side. The udon noodles were super tasty and had a nice bite to them. Also the chicken tempura on the side was excellent.

Sayabashi is a historic covered bridge that stretches over the Kanakura River and is recognized as a nationally designated cultural property. It is known to be utilized solely during Shinto rituals at Kotohira Shrine, with limited access throughout the year. The bridge's unique design and rare usage make it an intriguing sight for those interested in ancient architecture. While not open for regular crossing, its beauty and historical significance attract visitors who appreciate such hidden gems.

The current bridge was built in 1905 and existed as early as the Edo period. It is a bridge with a long history. of cultural heritage. The name of the scabbard bridge comes from its appearance that looks like a scabbard, which is very recognizable. The special structure adopts arch support and has no bridge columns at all. The design is quite clever. The bridge deck also has a roof to protect pedestrians from wind and rain, adding to the beauty of traditional Japanese architecture. ✨ In the past, the Sheath Bridge was located on the stone shrine directly connected to Kotohira-gu Shrine, and worshipers had to pass through this bridge before going up the mountain. However, due to the impassability of army artillery vehicles, the Sheath Bridge was moved to its current location. Nowadays, both ends of the bridge are closed, making it impassable during normal times. Only when Kotohira-gu Shrine holds a festival will the mikoshi pass through. Musashi, a renowned udon noodle eatery, offers an array of handcrafted Udon dishes. Their curry Udon comes highly recommended and pairs excellently with a side of rice to create delectable curry rice. Patrons may experience a slight wait for their Tasty Curry Udon, but the flavors are well worth it. This dish boasts a flavorful curry sauce and delightful udon texture that is sure to please any palate.
Handmade Udon. Done. Highly recommend the curry Udon and get rice to eat after to make curry rice. So good.
Mike P — Google review
The specialty of this place is it's curry udon. Which is very cheap at around 580 yen and delicious but not so good that I would go out my way to go here especially with the times it's open and actually taking orders. The curry has small chunks of beef in it and is very rich in flavor. If I was around and the place was open definitely a good dinner choice. The regular size isn't too big so I was hoping to get another item but they stopped taking orders about 50 minutes before their closing time. Given that they're only open 3 hours and closed a lot of days and even then only took orders for about 2 of those hours it was a little frustrating. I wish they would have given a last order notification but I suspect the owners couldn't care less.

You should eat here! This cute hidden Udon restaurant located next to the supermarket and away from the tourist area (but conveniently across the road from our hotel) is a must visit. They sell amazing curry Udon as well as several other varieties. Not reading or speaking Japanese we did our research and checked what we wanted with a translation app and their website. I would recommend the "Curry Udon" or the "Kamaage Udon" (noodles in cooking water) if you want something basic. Also the prices are great!

The garlic curry sauce doesn't have the garlic flavor, and the fried vegetables were soaked with too much oil that were not crispy at all. The udon is average and the tempura chicken is good. Overall a bit disappointed with the food quality.

(Translated by Google) While visiting Konpira Shrine in Kagawa Prefecture, I had Sanuki udon at "Tentekomai." Located just off the main approach to Konpira Shrine, the restaurant's quaint appearance raised expectations. The restaurant is self-service, and the lively yet spacious atmosphere allowed me to order and sit down smoothly. I chose the classic bukkake udon (cold) topped with freshly fried kakiage. The udon noodles were shiny and beautiful, and I was impressed by their beauty. When I took a bite, I was surprised by their chewy elasticity and strong firmness, which did not disappoint. The texture of the noodles, which seemed to dance in my mouth, was truly worthy of the restaurant's name, "Tentekomai." The soup stock was light, but the flavor of dried sardines was clearly felt, further enhancing the deliciousness of the noodles. The crispy kakiage was not oily and was delicious even when dipped in the soup stock. Another attraction is the reasonable prices, which are not typical of tourist spots, and it is easy to see why it is loved by locals. If you are visiting Konpira Shrine, it is definitely a place you should stop by for some delicious udon that will satisfy both your body and soul.

Shōhachi Udon Kotohira is a delightful stop for anyone exploring the area, especially if you're on your way to the famous Kotohiragu Shrine. Upon arrival, guests are greeted warmly by the manager who offers a taste of their signature soy sauce udon. Although only cold soy sauce udon was available during my visit, I couldn't resist ordering it. The thick noodles paired with a light and flavorful soy sauce were simply irresistible!
Skip the udon shops along the main parade and come to this one, mere minutes walk away! Don't let the prices fool you (a mere 550yen for a lunch set), these are full sized bowls of the best udon in town! This price includes a rice ball and a stick of oden, which was very smart, because you won't stop at one! The oden is one of the best I've had, with an amazing miso sauce to top it off at an incredible 50yen a stick. Warm and friendly shopkeeper. Highly recommended!

The current rating of Google Maps is 4.4, which is completely unworthy. It's like a udon restaurant in a tourist area. Self-service restaurants, which are popular with locals, are much cheaper and delicious. Although he is very friendly towards the customers, his attitude makes the food taste bad. The Kotohira Town Public Hall, reportedly constructed in 1934, is adjacent to the Ocean Science Museum and stands as a remarkable architectural structure. This building is recognized as a national tangible cultural property and continues to serve as a hub for various meetings and events. While access inside may be restricted, the exterior, along with the expansive garden within its gates, is truly impressive.

(Translated by Google) The design of the entrance and its construction techniques are truly eye-catching. I learned from other people's reviews and photo posts that the room was very spacious and that it was a public hall. On the day I visited, there were many cars parked there that seemed to be people involved, as it was the day of the Konpira Kabuki performance. Preservation is very difficult, but in order to preserve it for future generations, I think it would be nice to have events that are open to people outside of Kotohira Town, although I think it will be in a limited form.

(Translated by Google) Turn left at the stone steps leading up to this public hall, Kotohira Shrine, which was said to have been built in 1934, and you'll find the Marine Science Museum. A stately building stands next to it. It is said to be registered as a national tangible cultural property, and is still often used for meetings and events. I had heard that it was not possible to tour the building, so I only looked in from the outside, but not only the exterior of the building, but also the garden that spreads out inside the gate, was quite impressive. There is also Kanamaruza (formerly Konpira Grand Theater), which is said to be the oldest theater in Japan, nearby, so I felt it was a good area to explore. Japanized western restaurant
New Green is a charming local establishment where the community's women gather to enjoy coffee and engage in lively conversations. In addition to being one of the few restaurants open for dinner in the area, New Green offers a variety of delectable dishes. From salads to kaki-furai (breaded and fried oysters) and omu-raisu (omelette filled with fried rice), their menu satisfies diverse cravings. Those with a sweet tooth can indulge in their tempting cake selection.
Fantastic filling and inexpensive lunch! We had wafu tonkatsu which included side dishes, and a seasonal vegetable curry with a side salad for extra. The mixed fruit juice was also good. The service was friendly and the atmosphere was nice. Highly recommended! 6-month update: We got the wafu tonkatsu again and it was as good as the last time. In addition, we tried the nanban chicken, which was on their specials menu. It was good overall, but neither the chicken nor the sauce were sour as nanban usually is. We came around 12:45 and it was almost a full house. Mostly middle-aged to elderly local crowd with a few Konpira-san visitors. There’s lots of seating including areas for families, so younger people and children will feel quite at home here. Lastly, our food took about 20 minutes to come out, which is fair given the type of lunch and that it was quite busy.

What a nice place this is! We both had the creamy crab croquettes and they came with rice, miso soup, vegetables, some green salad, seaweed and pickled veggies. It was surely enough for lunch. Both ladies behind the counter were very friendly. The atmosphere was nice and the food was not expensive. The espresso and tea were maybe a little higher priced but still very ok.

Came here at 4pm thinking we'd eat something like crab croquettes. The waitress gave us the menu but then when we flipped it over to look at the food options, they took the entire food menu sheet away and told us we could only order drinks. I guess we came at the wrong time, but the meal service times weren't listed anywhere outside. The drinks are expensive, 600 yen + tax for a single cup of tea, but it was made with proper loose tea leaves. My partner enjoyed their melon soda float. The cafe was quiet and a nice temperature.

Udon noodle restaurant
Menkui is a udon noodle restaurant located in the Nakatado district. It has been praised for its delicious and affordable food, which many believe is even better than some well-known establishments. Despite being a bit far from residential areas, it remains a popular choice among locals. The prices have recently increased, but this does not deter customers who value the quality and portion sizes offered at Menkui. Overall, it is considered an important and recommended dining option in the area.

(Translated by Google) I received a small meat bukkake for 490 yen. At first, I was concerned about the smell of meat, but it soon disappeared and I was able to eat deliciously. Not only is it delicious, but the udon and meat are voluminous and only cost 490 yen. I think it's a reasonable restaurant considering there are famous restaurants that charge 495 yen for zaru udon that doesn't taste good. Most udon restaurants are closed on Wednesdays, but this one is open all year round, so you can come anytime. No lines. Good access. (Translated by Google) I stopped by around lunchtime during a break from sightseeing during the Obon holidays. The parking lot was filled with cars with local license plates. We were the only other tourists inside the restaurant. My expectations were high, but... The tempura had been sitting around for a while and was greasy. The shrimp kakiage was a frozen pre-made product. I ordered Zaru udon, but the udon was lukewarm. The udon wasn't chewy either, feeling like I was eating a lump of flour. It was heavy. I personally think commercially available frozen Sanuki udon is better. The noodle soup lacked dashi flavor. I think they probably use dried sardines and arabushi flakes. And even that noodle soup was lukewarm. And there was so little green onion as a condiment that I wondered if that was all there was. If it's a self-service udon restaurant, I'd like to be able to adjust the amount of green onion and tempura flakes to my liking. The staff also said it was better than a Jiro-style ramen shop. If this is what you'd call authentic Sanuki udon, I'd go to the chain Marugame Seimen. The prices are cheap. Maybe that's why it's so popular with locals. (Translated by Google) <Recent news> This is also a self-service restaurant where I can't remember how long it's been open. I hadn't been there for a long time because it didn't suit my palate in the past, but I happened to come across it in a search, so I came here to try it for the first time in a long time. I've had ``2 bowls of bukkake'', ``1 bowl of small kake'', and this is the third place I've been to today, and it's past 10 o'clock. I was surprised at the low price of 230 yen for ``large soy sauce (2 bowls)'', and when I found out that they don't use citrus juice, I understood. The boiled medium-thin noodles were quite uniform, not stretched, and had a strong bite for their thickness, which was quite good. I visited again on March 4th and tried to order ``hiyakake'', but they said they didn't do it, so I was served ``extra large kake (3 bowls)'' of noodles without heating them. The kake broth has a slightly sweet taste, which may not be familiar to those who are used to light broth, but it went well with the unique shichimi pepper on the table. On July 31, I wanted to eat udon in the evening, but there weren't many udon shops open, so I headed to this shop that was open until 5pm. When I arrived after 4pm, the noren was down and the staff was cleaning up, so I looked at the sign. The hours had been shortened to 4pm. I reported it to Google and had it corrected, but I felt stupid for coming all the way here. I've been slacking on reviews. 2025.5.21 I entered the store in the afternoon. I went to another store and tried a large cold kake with fried tofu on top. The noodles have become a little thicker and harder for a while now, and are medium-thick noodles about 60 to 70 cm long. Compared to before, the noodles are more chunky, but the sweetness of the cold kake broth has disappeared and it has become quite salty. It seemed a little dangerous for me, who has diabetes and high blood pressure.

Came as a group of 5 foreigners . Two went to to order. However the server left counter to inform us that we could not sit here until after we ordered, then returned to counter to get the two customers in front of our group who had ordered and once again tell us to move so they could sit down. There was another free table, but ok we followed the womans request. However a group of people who had arrived after us sat down at a table while one went to order. Apparently for them it wasn't a problem for at no point did they get asked to get up . Different systems for foreigners and Japanese? I conveyed my feelings to the server but was answered with a rude shrug. 18 years in Japan and it was the first time I felt embarrassed for the bad impressions my visiting friends must have had.

Japanese restaurant
Sushi-ichi is a charming, long-established sushi restaurant nestled in the heart of Kotohira. Renowned for its exceptional freshness, this eatery offers a delightful array of sushi options that are sure to please any palate. One standout dish you simply cannot miss is their Sawara Karasumi, a unique delicacy likely found nowhere else in Japan. This exquisite treat boasts a richer flavor than traditional mullet roe and has garnered quite the reputation among locals and visitors alike.

However, the old man who owned the restaurant at the door greeted me and said it was open, so I sat on the bottom left. I can't believe the food is good. The fried fish is delicious but not thick in batter. The sauce is sour, sweet and spicy with mustard. It's the same as the fried fish. It is commendable that the two elderly people in the shop are attentive and give the whole meal an authentic human touch! They are kind to foreigners and have pictures on the menu, so you don’t have to worry about not knowing what to order. I wanted to say that the radishes were delicious, but maybe because of the language barrier, the old lady gave me an extra plate. Super touching. If you find yourself in the charming Kotohira Hot Spring Area, make sure to stop by Honetsukitori Tanakaya for a delightful dining experience. Just a minute's walk from your hotel, this izakaya offers a cozy atmosphere perfect for unwinding after a day of exploration. The menu features an array of delicious grilled dishes, including chicken gizzards and shiitake mushrooms, all prepared with minimal seasoning to highlight their natural flavors.
Despite being a chicken restaurant (we didn't realise at the time), the staff were very helpful when we explained we were vegetarian, and helped us with some vegetarian skewers and salads. Had a great meal and would definitely recommend.

Local history museum
Nestled in the charming town of Kotohira, the Historical Minzoku Museum offers a fascinating glimpse into Japan's rich cultural heritage. This museum showcases traditional crafts and lifestyles, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the history of local communities. As you explore its exhibits, you'll gain insight into the customs and practices that have shaped this region over time. The museum is a perfect stop for those looking to deepen their understanding of Japanese culture while enjoying the serene atmosphere of Kotohira.
(Translated by Google) I recommend visiting the Kotohira Town History and Folklore Museum before going to the Kanamaruza Theater and climbing Mt. Konpira! 200 yen. This is the site of the Kanamaruza Theater, the oldest wooden playhouse in Japan that still stands, built in the Edo period. The Kanamaruza Theater is also designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. The Kanamaruza Theater was relocated here, and the site is now a History and Folklore Museum that introduces the history and folklore of the region. If you like history and culture, you should definitely go! The exhibition space is small, but it displays traditional local tools, farming implements, and folk tools, allowing you to feel the life of Kotohira in the past. In particular, you can get a deeper understanding of the Kanamaruza Theater that was located here. The staff member asked me, "Shall I explain it to you?" but I didn't have time. I climbed Mt. Konpira in the morning and entered the building around 9:20, but I had to check out of the hotel at 10. However, after a little tour, I thought it would be better if he explained it to me, so I asked him. He was like a walking dictionary, knew everything, and his explanation was interesting. I asked, "Doesn't this take at least an hour?" and he said, "I can do five hours!", so I checked out and came back. I had plans for the afternoon, so I listened to him until late afternoon. I don't know much about Kabuki, but I learned a lot, and I learned that the temple town of Kotohira was very lively in the Edo period. Originally, sumo was held as a temporary event to raise funds for festivals, and it became Kabuki. It was built and demolished every time, but money was raised through a lottery, and it was built as a permanent playhouse in 1835 during the Edo period, and it was designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan in 1970. When it is designated as a cultural property, preservation is given top priority, and the use of the building is strictly restricted. In other words, it was a situation where "it can't be destroyed, but it can't be used" for a long time. However, thanks to the efforts of people who believe that "cultural properties are valuable not only when they are preserved, but also when they are used," the regular Kabuki performance "Shikoku Konpira Kabuki Grand Play" was resumed in 1985. There were lots of specific anecdotes about that. It was a time before lighting, so the buildings were built in sync with the rising and setting of the sun, and it was a treasure trove of trivia. I was told that when they started worshiping Shinto, finances got tight, so an organization was formed and expanded its membership throughout Japan, but I regret forgetting the name! I love history and culture, so I always go to local history museums when I travel, and this was the most interesting one I've ever been to. I also became interested in Kabuki. I felt lucky because they don't always explain things that much to tourists. Thank you!

Antique store
(Translated by Google) There were many antique goods in the large store. I was impressed by the sheer quantity and variety of products, so I took my time to take a closer look. I think the price is on the cheap side personally. Before entering the store, the outside looked unconventional, but the layout was wonderful and it felt like a different space. Perhaps because it was surrounded by old things, it had a nostalgic smell of my grandmother's house. If you're looking for something, just say hi to the store, and they won't push you unless you ask, so don't worry if you think it's hard to get in! Please go.
