Castle
Sights & Landmarks
In Sanlucar de Barrameda, the Castillo De Santiago stands as a prominent 15th-century castle with a rich historical significance. Built by the Second Duke of Medina Sidonia, it was more of a symbol of power than a military stronghold. Throughout its history, the castle has hosted notable figures such as Isabella of Castille and Ferdinand Magellan. The area around the castle played a significant role in voyages that brought wealth to Spain from the Americas and Asia.
Very beautiful and well maintained castle with a nice view from the tower over the city. We were positively surprised about the opening times (see photo). The entrance fee is 9 Euro per adult. We were not so happy with the audio guide. You have to scan a QR code with your phone but when you want to listen the (too long) explanations, you can't take photos. So you have to choose: guide OR photos. Not smart.
CNX E — Google review
The castle is certainly not as imposing as some we have visited in the area, but it offers a warm welcome at reception., some interesting history and a small museum of costumes and arms. Well worth a look if you're in town
Sarah D — Google review
Beautiful castle in Sanlúcar with interesting history. It costs about €8-€9 per person and they give you the handheld “tour guide” to use while you’re there. You’re prompted by signage to press the applicable number for the area you are walking through and the guide tells you all about it. We went around noon and there was only a few other people there, however parking was still difficult, so I imagine the earlier you get there, the better. My favorite part was the view from the top of the lord’s tower and the mermaid door.
Brisippus — Google review
Starbucks mermaid gate was interesting. Rooftop offered an actual view of the winding river.
Evelyn C — Google review
Super awesome castle that's a must see while in town. There is an audio guide link you can scan and listen to as you walk around. From here a few minutes drive to the beach to see Baluarte San Salvador and the beautiful sunset. Hopefully the city will clean up the Baluarte San Salvador area and preserve the historical significance of it.
Vampire4 U — Google review
Excellent tour! Be sure to bring ear buds so you don't have to blast your phone speaker.
Christoph G — Google review
From the outside and at the entrance we weren't expecting much but this is a great castle to explore! Lots of rooms with interesting maps! Make sure to climb the tower!
Jennifer M — Google review
Great castle, and if you get to find the secret room you will see the plans when they aim to finish in 2036. Will be 5 star luxury for the wealthy folk like me!

One of the oldest and best bodega in Spain. I love all the historical buildings and stories here. Impressive wine cellars and storage facilities. It is definitely worth a visit for wine lovers.
Kiki Q — Google review
Well looked after by tour hostess, Erin. Make sure you book & are on time! I bought and have since tried the 'Nave Trinidad' manzanilla (pictured)- just outstanding. The walk up the hill is really worthwhile
Robert B — Google review
The main manzanilla producer in Sanlucar. It definitely worths a visit. I recommend trying out different kinds of manzanilla. The tour was also great!
Cengizhan Ö — Google review
It's been on my bucket list to take a pilgrimage to this iconic bodegas. Was thoroughly impressed beyond even what I could imagine w my tour w Erin. She had such a deep passion for sherry and was so knowledgeable about the bodegas, the entire process of making sherry and did the most amazing structured tasting I've had. Highly recommend the Reliquia tasting, which was a real treat. It's very rare that you get a chance to taste such rare sherries with an average age of 150 yrs. Visiting helps you understand how the soul of Spanish wine can be passed down so many generations.
Samuel C — Google review
Excellent tours and nice sellers. When they saw that I had by accident booked for the wrong date, they made no fuss and changed it for the current date. The tour was sold as only in Spanish, but the lovely guide Sandy made the effort explain everything in two languages. Highly recommended.
Caspar D — Google review
Big recommendation! We had a great tour in a beautiful bodega with a competent and lovely guide. Thank you very much, Moíses !
Mirko S — Google review
Visit to bodegas barbadillo to have the biologically aged wines tour with Erin and it was such a fantastic experience. The passion and care for sherry wines and in particular manzanilla, a specialty wine of the area/bodega really shone through. It was great to visit the bodega and learn more and the sherry making process, the history of it before heading off to have some tastings. On this tour you really get to experience a full range of biologically aged wines and the subtle difference that a wine can have, for example, depending on its location, age and even the type of wind most present in the bodega in which it is being aged. All of this being explained and curated by Erin, who did a fantastic job of talking us through the wines whilst also managing another group and just generally being fun and passionate about sherry - so thank you very much, we will definitely be recommending this tour to others.
J M — Google review
Catherine is a wonderful tour guide! She is very knowledgeable and friendly. She made our group feel welcomed and comfortable by personally speaking with each of us during the tasting and making sure that we understood each step in the production process. I would recommend her tour to everyone!

Tapas bar
Spanish restaurant
Casa Balbino is a traditional tavern located in the Plaza del Cabildo, at the heart of Sanlucar de Barrameda. It's renowned among locals and travelers for its high-quality hot and cold tapas, seafood specialties, and stews.
Drove from Jerez to try the tortilla de Camarones and they did not disappoint. Arrived around 12:30pm for lunch to avoid the crowd and glad we did since a long line formed later on. Each order comes with 2 pieces of perfectly seasoned and fried tortillas that is light, airy and yes, greasy! Soooo good! We also ordered Squid eggs in olive oil. Not my favorite. It needed more salt or seasoning in my opinion but luckily we ordered clam in garlic, olive oil sauce which was delicious and plenty of sauce leftover to share with the squid eggs. 😉 Fish eggs were average. It was very pleasant to sit in the outdoor area with beautiful flowers and a flowing fountain nearby. Glass display case with all the dishes and ingredients clearly visible inside the restaurant.
Pokemon M — Google review
The food was delicious, had lunch on a Friday and needed to join a short line but it was worth the wait. Service was friendly and efficient, and the atmosphere in the square was hopping. Make sure to try the tortillas de camerones ❤️
Ruth F — Google review
I've been visiting Casa Balbino every year when I visit from abroad. The quality of food is always first class, delicious tapas, both hot and cold. Everything fresh and totally traditional to the region. Tables in the main square are a hot commodity so often there's a wait. Try to get there early if you can! There are also tables on the side alley - less nice but if you visit mainly for good food, won't matter much where you sit. One time we had less than pleasant experience when we visited with my elderly suegra. She walked with a rollator, we were 5 people but got seated in a small table for 4 in the alley, despite bigger tables being available there. Granted, it was rush hours so possibly they were keeping larger table in case a bigger group comes. At the end there wasn't any bigger group so a couple got seated at a large table while we were squished at a 4 person table, being 5 people plus a walker. Aside from that little hiccup, love this place. Best tortillas de camarones around!
Jas E — Google review
The food have been amazing, the service have been fast, the taste of all the dishes have been incredible. The most delicious dish at least for my was Gambas al ajillo Maybe the service need to be more discreet when talk with between them but in general have been amazing.
Carlos T — Google review
Very nice Tortilla de Camarones! Worth for that. For sitting down we had to wait but it goes fast. Service was a bit slow but they were swamped.
Alejandro R — Google review
Join the queue and it will worth waiting! It’s located in a lovely corner of the Plaza. It’s definitely a true tapas experience. Everything was tasty and the value/quality is just top! I loveeeeeeed the clams in sherry sauce and the stuffed aubergine with shrimps! Would love to come back!
Güliz C — Google review
Went for lunch. The restaurant wasn't busy when we arrived. Got seated right away. Waiter gave us a menu card, asked what we wanted to drink then disappeared. 10 mins later, another waiter brought us 2 riojas when we'd asked for verdejo. About 10 mins later we got our drinks. We noticed that several tables had been seated after us. Another 15 mins passed and I started asking wait staff to take our order. They each said they'd send our waiter. He passed by several times and kept saying he'd be right with us. All the while he was taking lunch orders from tables that had been seated after us and bringing them food. Finally I was able to get him to stop and talk to me. I admit I was angry at that point. I pointed out to him that 2 tables were already eating their lunch while we hadn't even been given a chance to order. He got verbally combative with me, said that those tables had flagged him down and said we should have done the same. Idiot. I wasn't going to argue with him anymore, I asked him for a complaint form. He pretended not to know what I was talking about. I asked for our wine bill which was 6€. Paid the bill and left. We were there for almost an hour. I will never go back to this awful place.
Dolores M — Google review
We went at the recommendation of Jose Andres like most Americans. I was skeptical because of what a scene it is, but we had a great experience. The tortillas de camarones were the draw, and they were good but the gambas y berenjena were next level, as were the adobo. Be bold and order past the usuals here! Staff was fast but lovely.

The first floor dining room with sea view was amazing. Most dishes were tasty and fresh, but the cooked prawns (langostinos cocidos) were clearly the best.

Get there early to get a place at the bar. No need to reserve at the restaurant to have amazing food. We will go back for the ova and the buñuelos! The prices for the fried fish are really good for the quantity and quality. My wife loved the cazuela and it was so filling!
Benjamin — Google review
You can tell how good this place is by the queue for the unbookable outside tapas tables. They get claimed well before the place even opens. We booked ahead and ate in the restaurant. Food was exceptional and service also spot on. Not to be missed if you are in Sanlucar.
John W — Google review
Great seafood/produce. We had tomato salad with fresh tuna, the famous Sanlucar shrimp (boiled and eaten cold), mixed fried seafood, and yogurt ice cream. Simple and satisfying.
Sevgi Y — Google review
We sat at the bar and ordered mostly fish tapas as the restaurant was fully booked. We were in Andalucia for 10 days and this was probably the best food we had with amazing value for money. Everything we had was very tasty and the price was almost unbelievably low. 100% recommended.

Fantastic menu. The food is top quality with balanced flavours. Excellent selection of local wines. Friendly staff. A great choice for casual fine dining in Sanlúcar

Most definitely worth it. El Espejo is a hidden gem in Sanlúcar de Barrameda. We loved every single piece of food that was on our plates tonight, and trust that they are Michelin recognized for a reason! We ordered mackerel (fish) in pea and seaweed puree, cheese board, Sea urchin mousse, grilled red shrimp, Fideua with San Lucar prawns, and Beef cheek with sweet potato puree.
MAURICIO R — Google review
Great lunch on a friday. Salmorejo was very good and the solomillo too. The tuna tartar, in my opinion, was overseasoned. Tuna quality was very good. Service also efficient professional not too stiff or formal. And the wine recommend I enjoyed a lot. The cava could have been colder. The espresso was good to finish it all off. There was no room to try the desert. Perhaps next time.
Schhol777 — Google review
We very much enjoyed two evenings at this great restaurant, a wonderful space with tables in the courtyard and an inside space both at the front of the restaurant and to the side of the courtyard. The menu is simple, with great local produce and creative cooking. As a lover of Sherry I enjoyed some seriously good wines recommended by the guys who looked after us, including some very limited VOS and VORS wines. The wine list was packed with some super interesting local wines from the Cadiz province as well as some bargains from the classic regions of Spain. Thank you team, we will return.

This is fish restaurant next to the river. Inside is typical Spanish and outside in the covered terrace one feels really like a tourist. The food is okay but not spectacular and the portions are small. I had the zarzuela and when I was asking for rice as a side dish I got the answer that I had to choose something else. So there comes no rice, pasta or potatoes with zarzuela. The waiters were not particularly friendly. It’s accessible for wheelchair.

While the location & service was good, the food was very underwhelming. We ate prawns, fried seafood platter & salad. Prawns were expensive, not convinced they were freshly cooked & were served without a finger bowl or dipping sauce. Extraordinary dining experience that I highly recommend to anyone looking to enjoy a memorable meal in Sanlúcar. We will certainly be returning!

This is a really nice spot. The atmosphere is very good. Good wine selection and food service. The food offer is interesting bridging well classic with new suggestions. They are renown for the rices piglet and lamb but everything in the menu is really good. Totally recommend

This is a really lovely restaurant. Good setting; close to the sea front but not overlooking. We sat on the verandah with the over hanging vines completing the green cocoon. We had the scallops and cod salad which were both delicious and generous portions. One of the fish of the day was sea bass that came filleted and was cooked to perfection. Santiago, our waiter was helpful and made very good suggestions. Finally this is ridiculously good value for money.

It is a very nice place, it's small and quiet and that makes it perfect for when you want a quiet relaxed dinner. The food still needs to be fine-tuned but they have lots of delicious stuff and I am sure that they will continue to improve upon recipes that may not be bestsellers. Definitely a place to try again and experience the evolution of the menu as people shape up what's best.

Bodegas Hidalgo - La Gitana is a family-owned winery that has been producing the famed La Gitana manzanilla since 1792. Located in Sanlucar de Barrameda, its ancient solera systems and cathedral-like whitewashed warehouses contribute to the unique character of its sherry. The humid, maritime air results in a thicker flor, giving the manzanilla a distinctive and refreshing flavor that locals can't get enough of.
Loved this. We also did the Lustau tour in Jerez but we enjoyed this one a lot more. Leo the tour guide was fantastic, highly recommended!

We had a fantastic tour led by Leo (Leonora) who was totally passionate about the wonderful wines of Manzanilla and delivered all the information in easily digestible chunks. I have had 49 years in the wines and spirits industry and been to a number of sherry bodegas before, but I certainly learnt a lot. I can thoroughly recommend visiting Bodegas Hidalgo and hope you get lucky in having Leo as your guide - she is a total star! Lorne Mackillop MW

My wife and I took the tour with our two sons, and agreed that it was the best bodega tour we've ever been on--and we've been going on bodega tours in the region for nearly 20 years. Our guide, Leo, was fantastic: She provided loads of information on the process and history behind the wine, answered all our questions, and conveyed a genuine passion for manzanilla. And the wine was absolutely delicious! If you're shopping for a bodega tour in Sanlucar, don't even bother looking elsewhere: This is the one. We took a cab back and forth from Jerez de la Frontera to do the tour, have lunch, go to the beach and visit the castle. It was 100% worth it, and I'd have come just for the bodega! :-)

I have visited several bodegas in Spain, and each one has been unique and memorable. However, my recent tour of Bodegas Hidalgo La Gitana was truly exceptional. Our tour guide was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about the winery and its wines. She shared his insights with us in a way that was both informative and engaging. I felt that our time at Bodega La Gitana was well spent, and our host couldn't have been more charming, passionate, or knowledgeable.

The English tour was really interesting and made by a very sympathetic woman who explained many things about Manzanilla. We have tasted 6 wines and got some cheese in the end as well.

The Palace of the Dukes of Medina Sidonia is a charming 16th-century palace converted into traditionally styled rooms, featuring a cafeteria and romantic gardens. Located in the city center with narrow streets dating back to Muslim times, it offers mild climate and access to beautiful beaches. The palace has an intriguing history, once home to the 7th Duke of Medina Sidonia and later the 21st Duchess who organized its vast archive.
A very charming hotel. Very little but with a lot of history. You'll feel that you're in a historic place where you can even visit their Historic Archive, which is the most important private archive in Europe

Taberna der Guerrita is a tapas bar that offers exceptional cuisine and an incredible ambiance. The restaurant is always bustling, even on Mondays, and provides a wide range of mouthwatering tapas to choose from. Their mojama tuna and fried prawns are particularly outstanding. Additionally, they offer a diverse selection of jerez wines straight from the barrel at reasonable prices. This establishment exudes authenticity and timelessness, making it a must-visit destination for those seeking an unforgettable dining experience.
Absolutely great food and amazing atmosphere - the place was really buzzing during lunchtime despite it being Monday. Excellent tapas with large selection to choose from, mojama tuna was superb as were fried prawns. Various shades of jerez served straight from the barrel and there prices are very reasonable. Really authentic place that feels so timeless.

This has been our best restaurant experience in Sanlucar by far. The place is located in a courtyard between two buildings next to a winery what it add character to the space. Everything we got was delicious, we specially liked the recommendation for the menu (steak tartar) and the rabo de toro empanadillas The wine we selected was not that good, but probably was bad luck. I’ll definitely return next time I come back to Sanlucar.

Who'd have believed it? Local Sanlucar folk having a knees up & doing the conga! That said, albeit beside a lovely bodega, this is a proper restaurant serving outstanding food. I tried a salady salmon (dados de salmon) & regaña de atun (homemade savoury biscuit with slithers of fresh tuna) and a Focaccia dish. Mightily fine and sensibly priced. Can't rate high enough unless you happen to catch the punters at the end of bodega tour having a rowdy 'one for the road' at the outdoor bar.

We were very disappointed with the overall experience. The food was good but not great the starter - rocket, burrata and anchovies salad- was outstanding but the rest of the food was just ok. However the staff were not friendly or welcoming- the service they gave to Spanish customers was completely different to the service we received. Disappointing as the venue could be memorable but didn’t live up to setting

Went there as I wanted a nice prosciutto sandwich , walked in and after waiting for like 5 minutes and everyone ignoring me, I was told I can sit wherever I want and have to order at the bar. I choose a sandwich and after 20 minutes when it arrives I ask the waiter if she can recommend something else for me to try, she bluntly says "no and if you want to order something else order at the bar" and walks away. And I was talking in Spanish too 🤷‍♂️ So rude, lack of customer service. If that's how they treat all the costumers, thats shameful. Made me feel so unwelcome, lacks basic costumer service and good manners, it's very expensive for what you get, everything looks like it's stuck in the past. Disappointing.

What a charming-looking bar, full of promise—if only we had been allowed to enjoy it. Unfortunately, our attempt to order food was met with such open hostility from the waitress that we quickly abandoned the idea. We settled for a single glass of Manzanilla (which, thankfully, required minimal human interaction) before making our exit. Interestingly, the staff seemed to have no trouble being warm and welcoming to the locals, which made the contrast in treatment all the more striking. Perhaps this place is a well-guarded secret, strictly reserved for those who meet the unspoken entry requirements. If you’re a visitor who dares to speak even a little Spanish, be prepared to feel spectacularly unwelcome.

Was a bit disapointing. No trees on that beach, no shade but plain sunshine. The water looks not clean and that's because it's actually the river bed and not the sea, at least at the part we have seen. No bars are very few to find alongside the beach. (Translated by Google) It's a short but interesting visit. The guides were very pleasant. I liked the tone they gave to the tour, providing information but also providing a very down-to-earth feel. The palace also has a café with a beautiful courtyard and a viewing platform with views of Sanlúcar. A stroll through the upper district is also recommended: despite the narrow sidewalks, it's worth reaching the palace by walking along Calle del Castillo and the Barbadillo wine cellars.

(Translated by Google) I went with my partner and my 7-month-old baby in a stroller. I bought the tickets online through the website for €10.99 each. When we arrived, they told us we couldn't bring the stroller in, and that we had to carry the baby in our arms. At no point on the website does it say that the site isn't accessible to disabled people or that strollers are prohibited. I politely explained, and the very rude lady told me that's the way it is, that we should bring the baby in our arms and that if we got tired after 10 minutes, we could leave. Obviously, I told her that if I had known that, I wouldn't have gone to the tour, so I didn't want to attend, and that we wanted our money back. She rudely gave me €20 when it was €22 and told me she didn't know where I bought the tickets and that everyone pays €10. She rudely and yelled at us for the remaining €2. Finally, the situation ended this way. It was a very unpleasant time due to the poor manners and lack of professionalism. It's a shame.

(Translated by Google) I did a wine tasting this summer at CIMA, and it was magnificent. We spent about two hours tasting about six wines for the modest price of 15 euros. The winemaker shared a wealth of knowledge about this wine with centuries of tradition, which is often underestimated. This center does a great job teaching us how to understand and appreciate local wine. I look forward to returning to Sanlúcar.

(Translated by Google) A "must see" place when you visit Sanlucar, birthplace of chamomile. Without a doubt the first step, an approach to this drink through stories, old tools and objects, wineries....origins and current events. Ah! And the visit to the place is free. Highlight Eva, the person who runs the center, an expert in this drink, great professional and very friendly. A luxury to coincide with her...but that is for next time. Thanks for everything. (Original) Un lugar "imperdible" cuando visites Sanlucar, cuna de la manzanilla.
