Nature & Parks
Glimmerglass State Park, located eight miles outside Cooperstown, is a picturesque park overlooking Otsego Lake. The park offers wooded trails for wildlife sightings and stunning views of the lake. It is also home to Hyde Hall, a National Historic Landmark and neoclassical country mansion that offers daily tours showcasing its rich history spanning five generations.
It was my first time to this State Park. Went on a very busy 4th of July weekend but had a great visit. There were a TON of people there, but the staff was on top of everything! From checking in, to parking, to lifeguards... it was a very well kept park. There were a number of trails and a lovely lake. Some trails had some voice boxes that you had to manually turn with some information given. It was a really neat thing that I had never seen before. Some other things that I noticed were a basketball court, place to get snacks and beverages (I believe it was cash only), beautiful wild flowers, camp grounds, covered bridge, playground, indoor restrooms, and plenty more I'm sure I missed with the group I visited with.

Laurence scouts troope 10 moving up ceremony weekend / camping badges. There are multiple personal grilling stations as well as fire pits located at your tent zones. The hiking trails are clearly visible even in rainy conditions all the scouts enjoyed the 2-mile hike that they did in the all-day rain. If you want a place where you can go and get away from technology some what is a perfect area it's got signs up everywhere no drone zone. During the time that my family and the other Scouts were there there was a 5k / 10K run walk event going on from the main Beach. For sanitation there is plenty of porta potties they do have a shower house / bath house you can bring your pets just would need your shots records and tags. They do offer would on sight as you first enter the park. All in all it was a peaceful experience an even when it rains they have the availability for those who may be looking for an activity to do where you can go on the tour of the grounds Maine house which they do three different types of toys one of them just so happens to be a quote haunted/ghost tour. There are plenty of pavilions and multiple playgrounds to keep occupied while watching the water and staring up at the stars

Glimmerglass State Park is amazing!! It's a perfect blend of almost a beach and an amazing park rolled into one! I have been here many many times and rent kayaks and paddle around in what almost seems like a marsh right under the most beautiful old covered bridge. I highly recommend this place for a beautiful fun filled day for everyone!
Terri W — Google review
Glimmerglass state park ia a beautiful place to swim in the summer and hike in the fall. In the winter you can snowshoe and ice skate. You can take a tour of Hyde Hall and walk the covered bridge trail. The hikes are easy, we'll marked and visitor friendly.
Sharon F — Google review
Camping here on our way across NYS. Easy access from main highways. Lovely view of lake ostego. Laughing lion trail was pleasant. Did not do the tour but looked like fun. Site 39 in primitive area was quite nice. Free Showers in main camping area. Lots of day use it appears based on size of parking lot. Would stay again. Close to cooperstown. Oh yes, great friendly staff.
Laura M — Google review
Make sure you get water at the DUMP Station. Some idiot put all old fashioned bathroom faucets at the campground so people can't use a hose to fill their trailers holding tanks. You can only get BUCKETS of water! Thats okay for a nonelectric campsite but not for the RV side. The park itself is beautiful and close to Cooperstown and has a trail through the oldest covered bridge in the US.
Mitzi B — Google review
This is a beautiful state park on Lake Otsego, not far from Copperstown and the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

Embark on a delightful adventure with the Glimmerglass Queen Tour Boat Company Inc. in Cooperstown, offering narrated boat tours of Otsego Lake. Whether you're seeking a relaxing cruise to take in the natural beauty and historical context of the area or looking for an exciting DIY experience with canoe, kayak, or stand-up paddleboard rentals, this tour company has something for everyone.
Excellent boat tour. The captain is very knowledgeable and shares her personal childhood experiences on the lake.
Alisa S — Google review
This boat ride cost my family $90….2 adults and 4 children. All children are $13, no matter what age. The ride is about an hour long and does not go the entire length of the lake. A quick recording plays in the beginning, but it is otherwise just a 30 minute ride out and 30 minutes back. The boat is clean and the staff were very friendly, but the experience was not worth the cost in my opinion.
Jodi S — Google review
No great narration. Wish the captain had given the tour to all and not just one couple. Bathrooms should have been offered somewhere when tour was finished. This tour was cash only.
Charleston G — Google review
Really enjoyed this tour. The captain was very knowledgeable about the lake's history and local stories! Perfect hour on Ostego Lake! Definitely worth the small price!
Sara H — Google review
Beautiful Day! Beautiful Cruise! This is the best way to enjoy the lake and listen to the background of the Tower on the shore. We will do it again next summer! Ticket came with hotel stay, but I'd buy one to go again.
Susie S — Google review
Boat was super clean tour was about a hour , lake is 9 miles long and water is amazing and clean being spring fed and deep! Cool boat ride if in the area.
M C — Google review
A nice hour and a half ride out and back around the lake, with great views of the surrounding area, and a brief narrative of some of the history and points of interest. The Glimmerglass Queen itself was pristine clean and looks almost brand new - very well maintained.

Enjoyed the tour on a lovely Sunday morning. It was about an hour ride around the lake on a nice boat. Bring cash.

Bodies of Water
Otsego Lake, located in Cooperstown, NY, is a picturesque destination offering a wide range of recreational activities. Visitors can enjoy swimming, boating, fishing, tubing, sailing, kayaking and more during the summer months. In winter, the lake transforms into a hub for ice fishing and snow sports like snowshoeing and skating. The area also features historical significance showcased in the Otsego Lake Historical Collection at the local library.
This is an insanely beautiful lake the water is actually like your in the carribean is a light blueish green that you can see down the the bottom it's easily the most beautiful lake I have ever Been to , I actually drank some of the water by accident when my son splashed me when we jumping off the boat and it tasted like bottled water. Really impressive place with beautiful restaurants all along the shores of the lake to dock your boat at along with little beaches as well. This is some where every one should go to atleast once.
Lisa R — Google review
beautiful clear water!! there is a beach on one end or you can rent a boat for the day. highly recommend checking out the sunken island on the northern end of the lake if you can get out there
Bri — Google review
Otsego Lake is a narrow, wonderful beauty of nature that stretches about 10 miles north from Cooperstown. At the northern end is Glimmerglass State Park, offering the usual recreational activities available at a lake, as well as some historic sites to see. At the southern end of the lake is a small park, Council Rock Park, that sits at the very beginning of the Susquehanna River. I found it intriguing to see the start of this river as I’m very familiar with many other parts of the it, including the other end as it stretches its way almost 500 miles into Maryland. Quite a difference in water quality between the start and end. Everything about this lake is such a beautiful sight to see. I didn’t want to leave after my short two days in Cooperstown.

The Glimmerglass Festival is a highly acclaimed opera and musical theater event that takes place in Cooperstown each summer. The festival, held at the picturesque Alice Busch Opera Theater by Otsego Lake, attracts over 30,000 fans. It features a diverse lineup of performances including celebrated operas, new and rare works, concerts, and Broadway hits. Under the direction of Francesca Zambello, attendees can enjoy three operas and one musical each summer.
Incredible venue! Wonderful volunteers! But the musical productions are superlative! We are newbies to Glimmerglass and now devoted fans. We enjoyed Pirates of Penzance and the Pagliacci the next. Super summer of music and song. Top notch!

Glimmerglass Opera! What a rich memories over the years I have ! Each summer 3 operas + 1 musical – what a treat!! And everything under Francesca Zambello WONDERFULL direction is so superb! Glimmerglass is nice place for summer resting treats (by Otsego Lake) + provides incredible cultural experiences. One doesn’t need to go to far away Bayreuth, Salzburg, Pesaro, Verona, etc. – this festival is so good by itself, and it doesn’t require extensive travelling. It is so professional, has ALWAYS interesting titles, and exceptional singers. With pre performances lecturers, and post performances Questions & Answers – meeting with producers and cast. Over the years, I never was any time disappointed. Period. Highly recommended !

Loved the show house on mango street and can't wait for rakes progress tomorrow. This place is amazing and such friendly people! Easy directions given on website.

Really enjoyed the experience. This was our first opera! We saw Pirates of Penzance. We had seats in the very last row of the right balcony but still we're not disappointed as the theatre is small and we could see everything fine. It was a little warm and the ceiling fan above us was not working, but overall an enjoyable experience.

IL Trovatore was just remarkable this evening. Beautiful weather and great singing. Fabulous staging. Thank you Francesca for another amazing night!!!

We visit every year and truly enjoy the place. We usually have lunch and then enjoy a production.

Our second time for a Glimmerglass on the Grass performance and it was even more stunning and special. I hope a version of this format continues in some way even after we can enjoy the main Opera house in the future!

Hyde Hall is a historic mansion from the early 1800s, now serving as a museum with picturesque views of Lake Otsego. It stands as a remarkable example of neoclassical country mansions in America and reflects the grandeur of English aristocracy's estates in the former colonies. The mansion boasts original furnishings, advanced amenities for its time, and offers guided tours for visitors to explore its 50 rooms.
Been waiting for decades for this to open to the public. Great tour on Memorial Day 2025 with Randy. Such a special place by Glimmerglass State Park. You’ve can join the friends of Hyde Hall to support restoration.
Cindra M — Google review
An amazing piece of history and a triumph of the state of New York for its support to save this building. We were visiting the Glimmerglass park when we saw the mansion high up on the hill. A lovely woman at the concession stand at the park told us that this is a renovation of the Clark family home and it’s full of history. We were delighted to go on a tour the next day and learn more about details from a very knowledgeable guide. Definitely check this out.
Diane A — Google review
Hyde Hall is an extraordinary British-style country house set in Cooperstown, NY. The house was built between 1817-1834 by architect Phillip Hooker. It was home to five generations of the Clarke family. There are 50 rooms in the house and the house has picturesque views of Otsego Lake. At the time the house was built, it was arguably the best that money could buy. The house has grand rooms, high ceilings, and impressive architectural features. The dining room itself measures twenty-four by thirty-six feet. Perhaps, one of the most unique innovations in the house are chandeliers that were lit by vapor light. Through a demonstration I had the opportunity to see this technology in use and it was amazing. The tour guide stated that this might be the only place in the world where you can see a working vapor light chandelier. There is also a large kitchen here that is much much bigger than kitchens in comparable mansions.. The library is another captivating room. You will also see some of the servants quarters on the tour. The house is still in the process of being renovated, but there is still a lot to see. Seeing the house from the outside is impressive. It is constructed mostly of limestone. You will notice the four Grecian columns in the front of the house. From inside of the house you will notice the open courtyards. The porch is another gem of this house as it has a wonderful view of the lake. The house can also be seen from the lake. On your way to the house you will pass by on what is thought to be America’s oldest covered bridge. It is fairly easy to get a tour here and you can call ahead of time for hours. You can enter through Glimmerglass State Park to get here, but there is also a separate road leading to the mansion. After a mansion tour Glimmerglass State Park offers a lot to do. Cooperstown is famous for its many attractions including the Baseball Hall of Fame and Farmers Museums. Hyde Hall should rank right up there with them. It’s that great!
Ryan M — Google review
Wonderful tour however the day tours only show the first floor. I would love a tour that shows all three floors even if it costs more.
Bruce — Google review
We found Hyde Hall on our way into Cooperstown. It looked like an interesting place to take a tour. We didn't know much about this mansion and our tour guide was very knowledgeable and answered many questions from the small group we were in. Although chilly, it was a crisp, sunny day and the views were amazing. We enjoyed seeing all the rooms in the house and witnessing the restoration progress. It would have been nice if there had been some seating throughout for those like my husband that have a hard time standing for an hour +.
Diane M — Google review
As a history lover, this tour was great! It is so cool seeing so many pieces of furniture original to the home and family. The house is being restored so some parts are in a bit of disarray but you just have to overlook that. Very interesting home on a beautiful piece of property, with an interesting history of its inhabitants. If you’re nearby and love history or architecture, go check it out!
Justin — Google review
Would highly recommend Hyde Hall as a wedding venue. The location is beautiful, the views are beautiful and the location is personal and serene. The hall staff is the most helpful and accommodating out of any venue I've ever worked at before.
Alexandra L — Google review
Absolutely fabulous that they are restoring this historic building. It's interesting to see them working on it because they are restoring it one room at a time. How fascinating to see the process that is gone through to make each room appear as if it were brand new. You especially love the sparkly mica in the walls. Who knew they were into glitter back then?! Please like this review if you found it helpful.

Pail Shop Vineyards is a unique and laid-back winery located in New York. The open-air tasting room features a rotating gallery of local art, adding to its charm. What sets this vineyard apart is the use of locally grown grapes, no easy feat in this region. Situated on 40 picturesque acres, it's the perfect spot for a seasonal picnic with its hillside location and converted barn offering beautiful views of Fly Creek Valley.
Absolutely adorable winery. The views were incredible and we loved being able to sit near the pond if we wanted to. The sangria was fabulous, loved the wine and the staff could not have been better.
Stephanie C — Google review
Pail Shop never disappoints! Tucked near Fly Creek Cider Mill, it’s the perfect spot to escape the crowds and enjoy delicious wine with a scenic view. The red sangria is my personal favorite—great to sip there or take home! They also offer a charcuterie board if you’re feeling hungry and the staff is wonderful. I’ve heard they host live music by the pond in the summer, which sounds like a perfect way to spend an afternoon. The views in the fall are lovely as well when everything is in color! Overall, it’s definitely worth a visit if you’re in town!

This place is on the Cooperstown Beverage Trail and we had such a good time here! The staff is super friendly and we basically had the place to ourselves on a Sunday. It was a beautiful day so people missed out but eventually others came in. We did wine flights and just got to sit, chat, and enjoy some tunes with a view. There is parking. Highly recommend checking this place out!

Quaint little winery. Our server, Deb was great. She was very knowledgeable about the wine. The outdoor seating was quite beautiful and relaxing and We really enjoyed a glass of La cresent. Quite delicious!!! We will be back.

Wonderful place with the most beautiful sunset views! The sangria was out of this world. We came with a dog and a crying baby - and they could not have been more understanding and made sure we felt welcome. Highly recommend if you are in the Cooperstown area.

Quiet place with great views to relax with a glass of wine or sangria. You can see the mountain side and grape vines. Prepackaged snacks are available to pair.

This is our fifth annual visit to Pail Shop and it is still our favorite vineyard. The staff is friendly and very helpful. If a wine we like isn't ready to be bottled, they are great about shipping to you (or letting you know when ready for pickup if you're a local). The location is beautiful and their Wednesday Sangria Sunset with live music is wonderful and very popular.

This place was phenomenal, we weren't planning on going here we actually ended up driving past this place and decided to go. The service was great my fiance and decided to do their taste testing wine fleets and they were great. I loved there sangria and dry white wine. We also got their basket of snacks which had a ton of great goodies. This place is a must to go it was so pleasant.

The Rose & Thistle Bed & Breakfast offers a charming Victorian escape with classic country house-style rooms. Each room is elegantly decorated and equipped with modern amenities such as queen or king beds, ceiling fans, cable TV, Wi-Fi, air conditioning, and private baths.
We had a lovely weekend at the Rose and Thistle. Patti and Tom are most welcoming and so knowledgeable of the area! We were welcomed with open arms and felt like we were home. And did I mention the breakfasts?! DELICIOUS! We will be back!
Carrie P — Google review
We had a very enjoyable weekend with Patti and Tom! The huge homemade breakfasts are delicious and Patti takes great care to special dietary needs. The attention to detail does not go unnoticed and made our stay so comfortable. We will return on our next visit to the Baseball Hall of Fame. The only reason I gave 4 instead of 5 stars for location is that parking is tight. However 2 great restaurants are across the street, so very walkable.
Alicia T — Google review
I took off 1 star only because our room and bathroom were quite small; other than that, The Rose & Thistle is top draw. The owner and host, Patti, is welcoming, attentive and congenial, -- she makes you feel like you're an old friend. It was very quiet when we were there, the bed was comfortable, and the proximity to downtown Cooperstown and the Baseball Hall of Fame were great. Last, but not least, breakfast was excellent!

5 Star B&B. The house is lovely, the rooms comfortable, and the food is fantastic. My wife and I spent our 10 year anniversary there and loved it. Wonderful town and wonderful hosts, we will be back in the future.

Patti you made us feel right at home from the get go and I felt like we knew each other immediately - we laughed constantly and shared stories. You gave great recommendations and suggestions. Loved drinking wine on the wrap around porch and the breakfasts were delicious. I hope to return in the future. Thank you! Linda and don, Oakland, NJ

Patti couldn’t be more accommodating! Loved my room... clean, comfortable and private. Always great advice about where to eat and things to see! Housekeeping was spot on every day. The breakfast is always amazing! Highly recommend, and I’ll be back again!

First time at a Bed & Breakfast and wanted to surprise my boyfriend for the weekend. Patty was very friendly from the moment we arrived. It felt like we were coming to visit an old friend. The home was exactly how I imagined a Bed & Breakfast should be. Breakfast was served at 8:30 and what an event. Not only was the coffee and food good but the company was even better. Patty is able to bring a bunch of strangers in a room and make us all feel like we were all friends catching up on old times. Looking forward to our next visit already. P.S. my boyfriend absolutely loved everything about the weekend.
Erica R — Google review
What a wonderful place to stay. The room and breakfast is 5 stars but what makes this a must is Patti the owner. Warm, funny and full of stories she makes you feel welcome in her home. When we return the Rose and Thistle is the only place we will stay.

I visit the Fenimore Art Museum every so often, both for its permanent exhibits (my favorite is the Thaw Native American collection) and temporary exhibits. My last visit was to specifically see its Women Impressionists exhibit and exhibit of powerful, mostly black-and-white, photographs. Both were brilliant and informative. The museum is in a beautiful location in Cooperstown, New York, and one can walk down the sweeping back lawn to Otsego Lake.

What a stunning place! My partner and I had the most beautiful late summer day exploring the collection and the property - we even met a lovely woman who told us all about the history of the land down at the Mohawk bark house. Pro tip - walk down to the lake, look left and check out the replica bark house hiding along the waters edge.

Absolutely beautiful museum! I just had my wedding here and it was perfect. Everyone was wonderful to wok with. While I didn't look around the museum a ton, I look forward to coming back for a visit!!

We recently returned after a long absence when we were in the vicinity. The Fenimore Art Museum was once well known for its displays of American folk art, and still shows several rooms with folk art paintings and objects. More recently, their collection has evidently moved in other directions, purchasing traditional "American" academic art, apparently funded by the Thaws, whose art philanthropy has been in evidence at the Met and Morgan in NYC for some time. Unlike many of the works in NYC institutions that were once part of the Thaws' own carefully assembled collections, the American works in Cooperstown were apparently only bought with their money and are of inconsistent quality. That growth, combined with unrelated special exhibitions on multiple levels, makes a visit a haphazard time. A couple of summer 2025 exhibitions featured an extensive displays of American photography, while another showcased paintings and works on paper by impressionists Mary Cassatt and Berthe Morisot. If we hadn't read about it on their website in advance, we would have likely missed that awkwardly wedged into a dark lower-level room of American Indian art was a model of the truss work at Notre-Dame Paris which was recently restored after a terrible fire, and that although not visible from the museum itself, out on the beautiful rear lakeside lawn was actually a towering replica of a truss. While it is always nice to encounter unexpected art treasures, the overall Fenimore experience was not consistent, and despite picking-up and consulting their map, we may have missed other installations we would have enjoyed. We were fortunate to find one of the few remaining parking spots in front of the Museum. We didn't spend time in the gift shop, but they have a simple cafe run by a bakery a few towns over from which we enjoyed a sandwich and slice of cake. The Fenimore is across the street from a farm museum and adjacent to a golf course, which combine to make for a busy approach and exit.

This is a wonderful small museum. Outstanding American folk art and photography collections. Also, museum has added to American painting collection.

This is a small but mighty museum with art and history from ancient to modern Native American and folk artists and impressionists from the 17th to 20th centuries. Beautiful grounds on the lake

Pwe went for the Calvin and Hobbes exhibit and lecture. So many laughs! Seeing some of my favorite comic strip as part of the exhibit was great!

Park
Nestled at the intersection of Lake and River Streets in Cooperstown, Council Rock Park is a charming 1.25-acre oasis that offers breathtaking views of Otsego Lake and marks the beginning of the Susquehanna River. This park holds historical significance as it was once a gathering spot for Native American tribes before the Revolutionary War. Perfect for picnics with family or friends, visitors can enjoy a peaceful atmosphere while soaking in the natural beauty surrounding them.
History, beauty and nature all comes together at this river and lake feature with small beach, grass area and bench seating. A great place to spend part of your day. No other amenities and I had full bars of Verizon 4G LTE Roaming.

A beautiful view of the lake with huge shade trees and benches to sit on.

Mostly a historic marker at the edge of the lake, but the view is beautiful. In addition to the Council Rock marker, at the same location is a marker for Clinton's Dam (see the "different" photo). These photos are from October 2021 (a great time of year there).

Beautifully Calm, yet exquisite and perfect place to bring the family for a picnic. Right on the edge of Otsego Lake. Good spot to deploy a canoe or kayak for fishing or just perusing the lake itself. The view is something out of a post card.

Council Rock Park is a small park in Cooperstown that sits at the southern end of beautiful Lake Otsego. The interesting thing about this park is that it sits at the very beginning of the Susquehanna River.

Beautiful and serene spot along the banks of Otsego Lake at the headwaters of the Susquehana River. Highly recommended for a moment of reflection.
