Mountains
Mount Tsukuba, located in Ibaraki Prefecture, is a renowned 2,877-foot mountain with two peaks that offers stunning views of Tokyo and Mount Fuji. It features a cable car and hiking trails for visitors to explore its natural beauty. While not as tall as Mount Fuji, it still provides breathtaking scenery and is a popular destination for hikers looking for a slightly less challenging experience.
Map says 90 minutes up but a brisk pace will get you up in 60. Gorgeous views, not super crowded. There are some portions that are very rock heavy. Would recommend going on a dry day. Cable car option is nice too.
Tymd130 — Google review
If you are a beginner like me…It’s a good hike for Saturday..so that you may take some rest on Sunday before going back to office on Monday. I went on 05.01.2025. There was snow near top making some places slippery. Though it was not so crowded, a proper pathway is not available and we had to stand aside to make way for hikers coming down (especially on the last 200m to top to nyotai san) View from the observation deck between nyotai san and Nantai san is amazing. We had to Carry our water/ refreshments for the hike. However there are a few restaurants on the top but with no vegetarian options 🥹. On the way back we took the cable car as it was already late and the last bus to Tsukuba station (40-50 min bus ride away) was at 5pm.
Sudesh T — Google review
Very fun and enjoyable. Very nice view and peaceful mountain. My son is only 7 years but climbed the mountain ⛰️
Bindu K — Google review
Great beginner hike! I went twice, once during summer and once in Autumn. I think people can really enjoy going here during the Autumn because the foliage leaves was really nice. We went for a sunrise hike last time and the view was awesome at the summit! For full post please check my blog at mariejournals
Marie A — Google review
Fairly challenging trail with huge rocks and sometimes slippery, near the top is narrow and crowded. Overall a good hike near from Tokyo. View from the top is awesome. There is options for cable car and rope way as well.
Narayan P — Google review
A beautiful mountain an easy bus ride from Tsukuba Station. Dotted with cozy restaurants with views, a cable car, and ropeway, it's a lovely day trip. The cable car takes you to the saddle between the two peaks. Each of them are rocky to reach, but only a few meters above the saddle. A prime thing ti do in Ibaraki.
Richie H — Google review
The ropeway will take you up to the summit with ease! There are several restaurants at the summit. It should be noted, however, that most of them only accept cash. We then walked down from the summit. It was exciting, with steep slopes and lots of huge rocks. This is a great place to enjoy nature.
Rintaro — Google review
Nice and beautiful. Good for hike. The path is clearly maintained in natural way. No concrete or any other artificial material. However, in rainy days, it's muddy and slippery at some places. Anyway nice experience to hike it. For those who unable to climb it other options available. Cable car is cheap and easy. It's 600 ¥ per adult. Ropeway is what available. There are shops around the base of mountain. And also few shops at the top. But, as expected, price is bit high. After reaching the top you can enjoy the panoramic view. That's marvelous. It will refresh you. If you can bring food and water the hiking will cost nothing. Wash room facilities available. So I recommend this place for your next trip. Congrats

The Tsukuba Botanical Garden is a picturesque destination featuring winding paths that lead visitors through a diverse collection of native and exotic plants. Spanning approximately 14 hectares, the garden is home to over 1,000 phylogenetically conserved plant species, with more than 3,000 open to the public. The expansive grounds showcase representative Japanese flora as well as plants from tropical and arid regions worldwide.
Such a wonderful place. Very diverse. It's not too big so can change 'continent' very quickly. The greenhouses are also well designed and maintained. You feel like entering a movie set. Can only recommend. So pretty and peaceful. Mindfulness with opened eyes 🏞🌴
JP B — Google review
Absolutely incredible garden no matter when you visit. It's really massive and takes hours to explore everything. I think it's a great place to visit with your loved ones or go for the first date. Also, it's very friendly to kids. It doesn't look like a museum it's not boring and there are no major restrictions like "do not come close, do not touch" as in other botanical gardens. The park divided into different sectors each representing different kinds of plants like normal forest, coniferous forest, rainforest, pond and so on. In two large greenhouses you may see absolutely stunning plants, trees and flowers. For example, I didn't expect cactuses to be so huge. There are a few recreational zones where you can have a little picnic, or just rest in shade when it's hot. Moreover, the garden wasn't crowded even on Saturday, actually, it was almost empty, so it's good for those who hate bumping into people and noise. I think this place worth every yen you pay for the entrance (free entrance for students, even university students, which is unlikely in Japan). P. S. Drinks and ice cream are available in vending machine around the main building where you enter.
MiLord — Google review
This is a very well maintained botanical garden with a lot of species. The clematis garden is really amazing and the greenhouses are also very spectacular. It's definitely worth a visit.
Mark K — Google review
The tsukuba botanical gardens are amazing. Easy to reach and park. Very cheap ticket to see many unique and local plants. I came in the winter and while many of the outdoor plants were done blooming, inside the greenhouses there were many unique and flowering plants. The size of the greenhouses must be seen to believe. Some of the trees inside are very tall. A great way to spend an hour or two.
Neil B — Google review
This botanical garden is not too wide but it has various plants inside. You can't go there by car because they don't provide parking lot, I like this environmental consideration. I went there as regular visitor and paid for 330¥ (sorry I don't remember well). The main building has a help desk, souvenir shop, vending machine, and common room for guest activity (especially for children). Getting more inside, I found endangered plant area which gave me important knowledge about japanese plant biodiversity. In the middle of the garden you'll find also greenhouse and museum. There's toilet too. And my favourite part is the water plant area. Overall, this place is so quiet and calm, very good for just relaxation or getting inspired by nature.
Refa Y — Google review
I was lucky that there was a limited time orchid exhibition during my visit. It is a nice place especially for the family with baby. You can also rent a stroller for baby and senior citizen. There are 3-4 greenhouses and nice tracking route.. Baby and kids friendly place👶🏻👧🏻👦🏻

Nestled in the scenic Mt. Tsukuba Plum Garden, this picturesque destination offers a breathtaking experience during the plum blossom season, typically arriving in late February. The garden is easily accessible from the municipal parking lot and features well-maintained facilities, including shuttle buses for visitors with mobility challenges. As you wander through the expansive plum grove, you'll be treated to stunning views of Fuji-san and Kasumigaura Lake from the viewing deck.
Beautiful plum (ume) garden located in the bottom of Mt. Tsukuba. Highly recommend visiting in late February to early March when the flowers are blooming. The parking costs 500 yen, but it's free to enter the garden. There's a lot of people in the blooming season, but it doesn't feel very crowded since the garden itself is very large. However in the blooming season it usually makes traffic jams in front of the parking lot, so arriving in early or parking in the other places would be a good choice. A small souvenir shop and toilets are inside the garden.
Yūichi E — Google review
An absolutely must see if you live in Ibaraki or even outside the prefecture. The entrance is free and the parking 500 yens. Better come early, before 8:30 .
TominJapan — Google review
Gorgeous and peaceful area Pretty plum trees were in bloom during the March period when I visited. It was quiet with no tourists despite it being a public holiday. Great for photography.
Shaun C — Google review
This is a really nice place to watch plum blossom. A little bit hiking is there under the plum trees which is really beautiful.
Saurabh S — Google review
It was snowing the day we went and so we didn't get any good photographs, however this is a fairly nice place to visit if you go on a weekday when it's not so crowded

Beautiful scenery for the ume sight-seeing,managed to see fuji-san and kasumigaura lake from the viewing deck. Good and well maintained facilities. They have shuttle bus direct to the tsukuba-san cable car.

Matsumi Park in Tsukuba offers a serene escape into nature with its cherry trees, tranquil carp pond, and a unique concrete observation tower that provides stunning views of Mt. Tsukuba. While not the largest or most historically important park in the area, Matsumi Park's expansive green spaces and picturesque koi pond offer a peaceful setting for leisurely strolls or relaxing picnics.
Beautiful and peaceful city park near University of Tsukuba campus/med center. There are a lot of wonderful features for its size. The observation tower (¥100) is not something you get in your typical city park; it's cinder block construction, but it affords nice views or provides some solitude (depending on when you go). It's open 0900-1700 (last ticket 1645). Your choice of elevator or stairs! You can also feed the koi fish, watch the birds, smell the flowers, take a stroll, or just meditate by the lake. If you're thirsty, there are more vending machines than you can imagine.
Maxwell K — Google review
Great park in downtown tsukuba. Very close to expo science museum. Lots of ducks and koi fish. Peaceful waterfall and many benches around the water. There is a tower, you can purchase tickets to ride an elevator to top. Also can purchase koi and duck food at same place as elevator tickets. Indoor seating area. Play place for children could be better. Pay to park is easy to reach.
Neil B — Google review
Beautiful, although not big it is well scaped with several terrains and you can even buy food for the Coi fish and feed them, legally! Watch out for the pigeons as they want some action too~
Fernando B — Google review
It’s very big and beautiful park. Not only kids even elders can enjoy there
Rama J — Google review
Nice place for kids. Usually visit on Saturday, and feed carps

Great place for a walk; or passing an afternoon with the family.
AZM D — Google review
This park is nice for a walk with family. It has a lovely pond in the middle and the park is connected to the University so one can walk around and enjoy. I deducted one point because the pathways are a lil rough and bumpy, not suitable for a baby stroller. Would recommend people with infants to carry them in a baby carrier , if visiting this park.
Anisha V — Google review
Small public park, nice place, but aside from the vintage point, nothing to do there.

Shopping
Aeon Mall Tsukuba is a large shopping complex that offers a wide range of shops, including an Aeon supermarket, clothing stores, food and drink outlets, toy shops, home decor stores, and more. Families can enjoy a one-stop experience with entertainment options for kids and essential shopping for adults. The mall features a cinema and various restaurants to cater to different tastes. While the outdoor parking lot is spacious, it may be affected by severe weather conditions.
It’s pretty much like any other Aeon mall — you’re not expecting anything terribly exciting but it serves its purpose as a nice stopover for decent food, some grocery shopping and even a movie
Marc Q — Google review
a great place to shop. it's a big complex with aeon supermarket (basically gets everything there!) and more shops - clothings, food & drinks, toys, home decor and accessories, really everything. there's also a cinema in it and more restaurants. so it's a great one stop for families to go to on all days. the kids could be entertained and the adults to get their necessities. large parking lot available but at outdoor, so may suffer a bit under typhoon or storms.
Giami L — Google review
It has a nice food court at the top level. And on the ground floor, it has a good array of restaurants with reasonable price. The mall is huge and not crowded at all. There's plenty of parking spaces. Most Aeon supermarkets are crazy by the evenings but this is not at all. Hence it's a comfortable to do your grocery shopping.
EH T — Google review
This relatively new aeon mall is pretty good except for the main entrances to the mall itself. They seem like bottlenecks. The layout is pretty similar to aeon tsuchiura... Roughly. Food court is just okay with freshness burger as the only burger joint, and they are painfully slow.

Peony Garden Tokyo in Tsukuba is a vast botanical garden spanning approximately 60,000 square meters. It features around 10,000 tree peonies and 20,000 Chinese peonies of various varieties. The peak blooming period in early summer attracts many visitors. Besides the stunning peonies, the garden also boasts other beautiful flowers and offers opportunities for observing wildlife like frogs and insects.
I have visited it 9May 2022 , the peony have been blossom , the ticket is 1000 yen per day , you can put a multi entrance ticket with 1800 yen which you can go many days .. the bathroom is so clean so elegant with washlet , the market wave nice foods , when you enter you will be given a map with the ticket , there are 8 stamps hidden in the Garden , if you wind all , the office will give you a card 😍 , you can pick a frame fo free to take a nice pictures from the office , it was a very nice experience 🌸🌸🌸🌸 I like it

For less than two months each year in April and May this dog friendly paean to Peonies opens up to the public. During Golden Week and the weekend it can get ridiculously crowded but at other times it offers an hour of beguiling instagrammable beauty. On site Saza coffee and cakes are available as well as a few shrubs for sale near the entrance.

Likes: -a garden that is a labor of love with it’s organic pesticide-herbicide-free gardening methods -large variety of peonies -saw big parking space -afew food trucks on-site (weekends only??) Dislikes: -impossible to walk from the station; 1.5hrs?? -inconvenient without a car, the 15min bus commute from the nearest stations is difficult as there is only one bus per hour + 15min walk to the garden -no taxis at the Station -peak bloom season unpredictable, definitely not on my 27 April 2025 visit - many bushes budding stage, few flowering bushes have wilted due to the unusually hot weather of recent days Tip - get a Peony Garden Postcard from the Shopping Mall next to Ushiku Station, ¥100 discount for Admission Ticket

Sakura Traffic Park is a family-oriented park with a focus on vehicles. It features an old bus, steam train, rental bikes and go-karts. Children can learn about traffic rules while riding their bikes around the park. Bikes can be rented for 50 yen and there is also a playground and real train box for added enjoyment. Overall, it's an ideal place for kids to practice bike riding skills in a safe environment while learning about road safety.
This park educated children about traffic in a fun way, but the minus point is the pedal go-kart. It's quite tiring and heavy for some children, it will be wonderful if they attach a battery to it.

Great place for kids and even adult to practice how to bike and learn the traffic signs, you can bring your own bike or you can rent bike for kids and adult. There's also a small playground for kids to play.

Tsukuba Wanwan Land is a popular destination in Tsukuba, Japan, offering a unique experience for dog lovers. This interactive zoo features around 500 dogs from 90 different breeds, providing visitors with the opportunity to walk and play with these furry friends. The park also includes shows and a cat house, although some visitors have noted that the cat area can be crowded and has an unpleasant odor.
dog HEAVEN 2000¥ to go in and you can rent a dog for 20m for 1000¥ had so much fun would definitely recommend if you're a dog person! (there's a cat area too)
Sho T — Google review
A dog cat park. There are many dogs and cats. Their living conditions were ok. You can rent a dog for 20 mins at the cost of around 1000 yen extra. Entry fee for adult is 1000 yen. If you are coming from Tsukuba center, you can take hokubo shuttle bus and get down at Namuta stop. It is front of the bus stop. There is parking lot too.
Agamoni P — Google review
It’s a place for immersing yourself with dogs, but not much interaction is possible beyond cuddles. They should have provided toys so visitors can actually play with the dogs. There is a show to enjoy, though. So I would say, if you want a real ‘playing with dogs’ experience, go to a dog café instead. Oh, and the smell is bad in many areas, so wear something you wouldn’t mind getting dirty.
Mm — Google review
If you love dogs, this is the right place (there is a cat house too). You can bring your own dog if you have one, or rent a dog for the day. There are petting areas and a stage for events, like races. Entrance is not expensive but the playground is limited if large. And the restaurant selection is small and unremarkable. Handicap/wheelchair friendly. Credit cards OK in the entrance only.
Wisterian W — Google review
Normally I get nervous when it comes to zoos and animal activities in Japan as they don't always have the best animal care. This place however, the dogs seem happy and healthy. It was very fun to get some much needed dog time in and roam around the park.
Max K — Google review
Visited this lovely Cat and Dog Park. This place is very lively both with animals and humans. You can a lot of dogs of different breed. They also have a husky and separate section for Big Dogs and Small Dogs. You will have to pay 1000 yen to roam around a dog of your choice. There are events that happen all day. The cat house was relatively small and crowdy. Must visit with family.
Sanjeev M — Google review
They have many dogs they you can play with. The dog park is 1500yen entrance but you can get discount tickets online. It’s not really worth the price. You have to pay extra for other services like walking the dog for 20 mins which costs 1,000 yen, but the dogs don’t really want to walk. They are very playful with the staff but not with the customer. There are onsens and soba shops near by but they finish early as the soba sells fast.

Nice facilities, reasonable price. Go downstairs, take shoes off, buy a ticket at the machine (most things feature english translation), give it to the ladies at the counter and go for a swim. The restaurant upstairs closes a bit early (8:00 pm) and the machine is in Japanese with some pictures. The food is good for the price (see pic)

Great place for training if you're a beginner a intermediate level user. The facility is clean and well designed. The training room is not very large but not very crowded either. There is a very welcome public bath as well and a swimming pool. Still, if you're looking for serious training and body building machines, this place might be a little insufficient for your needs. Edit: The training room staff does not seem very motivated: they spend most of their time watching their smartphone or doing their homework. Are they part-time university students? The other day, an elderly fell on his knees and I helped him to sit down and take a rest. The staff did not react and did not even try to check if this man was injured or not.

Something just flew right into my hand, while the sound of roosters crowing (at 5:30 pm!) still keeps on ringing through the big green field where I'm now sitting on a simple backless bench. I thought the something was a frog for a moment but a large dragonfly that landed on the bench next to me was the more likely culprit. This park is great for an area that is a bit short on scenic green spaces. The drawback is it in an odd area that makes it hard to get to on foot from most residential areas (or at least where I was staying). But it is 20 minutes walking from the train station that is named after it. It's an idyllic open area great for a walk, a jog, reading a book, playing catch, or just relaxing with a book and listening to the sounds of wildlife. I'm still not sure why there are roosters here today. That's a first!

There aren’t so much playground equipments though, fields are just in good size for parents to let their kids play around without lost them. Not that big in a good meaning. There’s a pool(water park) looks old, which opens only in summer.

Park
Hanare Park is a great outdoor space with various activities for both kids and adults. The park features a zipline, cement slide, tennis courts, and a spacious lawn for baseball. While some play equipment has been updated, there are still areas that are unusable. Visitors can also enjoy walking and hiking in the park despite its small size. Additionally, the park offers opportunities for sports like tennis and baseball.
We loved this place😍. This is only one place in Tsukuba where we can play cricket. We are really thankful to the Hanare Park Teams who are managing. It is also a very good ground to play football, baseball. There is tennis court too. Parking is also available so you can enjoy and concentrate on your game.

(Translated by Google) Although some of the play equipment could not be used, the children had a lot of fun! Two days after using the service, I realized that my child's hat had fallen off, so I called them to find out that it was no good. When I called, I was told that the lost item had not arrived, but I later found it! I received a call back! I'm sure you found it after the phone call, so I'm glad you did! It had rained the day before, so I thought it must be dirty, but when I went to pick it up, I found it in perfect condition! ! She handed it to me and said, ``It was a little dirty, so I washed it briefly, but it wasn't dry yet!'' I was happy to see such a kind person managing the park I use with my children, so I decided to write a review!

(Translated by Google) The play equipment has been updated, but some items remain unusable. You can't tell from the parking lot, but there is playground equipment on the north side of the park. There are ropeways, combinations, and spring play equipment. There is also a rope crossing like a suspension bridge, but its use was prohibited. There is also a viewing platform, but it was partially broken and could not be used. Still, there are surprisingly few parks with playground equipment and parking lots and restrooms, so it's definitely convenient.

(Translated by Google) There are tennis courts and a baseball field, so you can enjoy sports😃 There is also play equipment such as a slide, so your kids might like it too😃 However, please be careful as there are places and play equipment that cannot be used ☺️ You can go around the park on the promenade, but I'd like to know how far you walked lol (Original)

(Translated by Google) A very good park, with zip lines and a slide (made of cement), but the kids will have fun! Two tennis courts and a large lawn for playing baseball! There is parking nearby and enough space to walk and take walks, despite being small! A good option for those who live in the area!

(Translated by Google) There is a ropeway playground where you hang from a rope, which is rare around here. There are no swings. There is a parking lot on the east side of the park, but the half of it closest to the baseball field is almost always full on game days, so you should be prepared to wait for a spot depending on the time of day.
