Nature & Parks
Nestled in a vast and picturesque landscape, Chae Son National Park is a haven of natural beauty. The park boasts mountains, forests, and stunning waterfalls, as well as year-round hot springs that are a major attraction. Visitors can immerse themselves in the rich forestland teeming with streams and wildlife. A highlight is the Chae Son Hot Wells, where natural hot water pools allow for unique experiences like boiling eggs or indulging in mineral baths.
Good hotspring with cold and hot water. You can buy raw eggs and boiled it as well. You can also take a bath privately, but for me the mineral foot bath is the best. Waterfall itself not far from here not recommend to swim at the waterfall since the hotspring will be better.
Grady L — Google review
I really enjoyed my visit, ended up spending most of my day here. There are 2 attraction in the main area: the Chae Son Hot Springs & the Chae Son Waterfall. The price is 200 TBH for foreigners, 100 TBH for Thais. The Hot Springs are extremely popular with domestic tourists. The main activities are boiling eggs, soaking the feet in the hot springs, and pickniking. The site is beautiful. Food and drink are available. The ticket includes access to a foot soaking area, small outdoor hot pools, and a stream where you can take a dip. The private bath areas are beautiful and cost only 50 TBH. Towels are available for rent. It's okay if you don't have a swimsuit, the rooms are fully private. There's also a massage pavilion, the price of a massage is only 200-300 TBH. You need to wait until a masseuse becomes available and they'll come get you, there's no front desk. For hikers, this is really an onsen first and national park second. There's only a very short path to the waterfall. The waterfall itself is unremarkable and swimming under it is prohibited. To get there, follow the stream up from the hot springs. The trail isn't marked so I ended up walking on the road. The trail is blocked beyond the 6th level of the waterfall. There was a signpost claiming that there's a 5km trail to the Mae Mon & Mae Khun Waterfalls. I couldn't find any info on this trail. There's also allegedly a "Mae Piak Nature Trail" somewhere in the park, but I couldn't locate this either. It's possible that the blocked off trail leads to these and you need to hire a guide to hike there. The park also allegedly has caves, couldn't get any info on them either. I gave it one star less because of the lack of hiking trails.
Antonija M — Google review
What an elegant park to visit. I almost thought I was back in Japan. It was that manicured especially in the hot springs area. The waterfall is impressive too with a small wall to the base leading up to the waterfall proper. Well worth a visit and can be easily combined with a visit the the sky temple, not 30 minutes up the road.

🌿 I visited the beautiful Chae Son National Park for 2 days and stayed one night at the campsite. If you’re driving from Chiang Mai, I highly recommend taking Route 1252. I mistakenly took the route through Mae Kampong village, which was very steep and challenging — not suitable for small cars like a Mazda 2 😄 🎟️ Entrance fee is 200 THB for foreigners, regardless of having a Thai work permit or pink card. Each national park in Thailand has its own policy, so always check ahead. The park is great for kids, with hot springs and a waterfall to explore. As other reviews mentioned: the bathrooms are clean and well-maintained. 💦 I definitely recommend taking an onsen bath at the hot springs — mine was 40°C and incredibly relaxing. They allow you to soak for 15 minutes, which was perfect. ☔ The only downside during our stay was the heavy rain, but despite that, we still had a lot of fun here. Highly recommended!

Great place to relax! Big and scenic area with multiple hot springs. You can boil eggs, have a picnic, massage and soak in one of private onsen cabins. Also there are bungalows for overnight rent. Foreigner entrance fee is 200 THB. Visit date: 26 Oct 2025
Alexey S — Google review
This is a chance to experience a real hot spring. You can see a lot of locals and the view is beautiful. It is worth a visit.
Jung-Woo C — Google review
Hot spring was fantastic, boiled some eggs while there, and enjoyed a great classic Thai massage.
Juul L — Google review
Great experience to feel the warmth coming from the spring and be able to use it for footbathing. You can rent a towel for 20 BTH. People buy eggs at the 3 shops higher up inside the park itsself and slowboil them in the hot water. You can also find a waterfall there with a trail besides it that goes far up. Very affordable entry, 200 BTH per adult (think it was 50 BTH for resident and 20 BTH for parking or the other way around). Only the road to there from Chiang-Mai was very long through the forest (2h almost).

The Thai Elephant Conservation Center, located just a 30-minute drive from Lampang, is a government-run facility dedicated to the preservation and care of Thailand's elephants. Visitors can engage in various activities such as feeding and bathing the elephants, watching them create art, and learning about conservation efforts. The center also features daily elephant shows showcasing traditional logging techniques and painting demonstrations. Additionally, it hosts the annual Khan Tok Chang festival celebrating the cultural significance of elephants in Thai society.
My friend and I had a good time observing elephants taking shower with staffs, their performance and artworks. There are souvenirs shop, canteen and accommodations. They have hospital and nursery for elephants. We were on an elephant ride with a staff. It was a great experience
Vipawee L — Google review
Easily accessible from the main highway in any direction with clear signs that provide visitors with the necessary information on what is what and where, in both Thai and English languages. The entire land layout is divided into sections such as the elephant show, elephant hospital, elephant rehabilitation, and so on. There was no entry fee to the place, however, there are tickets stalls for different events. Because it was midday and hot, nothing much was happening other than elephant back riding which we couldn’t do as it was too hot for us and the elephants too. Elephants back riding costs around THB 140 for a 10 minutes journey. There were small restaurants and coffee shop serving limited selection of local dishes too. Strange enough, the majority of the visitors were locals and it looked like we were the only tourists there. It was very quiet and looked semi deserted, but it should deserve better.
Husain ( — Google review
This isn't an elephant show or entertainment park. There are limited activities, all focused on the deep relationship between elephants and Thai people. I've seen many foreign reviews alleging animal cruelty and forced behavior. Do you really understand "Asian elephants"? This facility cares for both domesticated and wild elephants, and I believe their methods are appropriate for the elephants' well-being and natural environment. Please don't judge based on a limited or biased viewpoint.
Pisanu.n — Google review
When we entered the ticket booth, I saw an elephant next to it walking freely. I thought the elephant would have some freedom and would be taken care of. When we entered the park, I saw the elephants being chained with a small metal chain. They looked distressed and wanted to roam around of course. They showed monotone behavior (head swaying from one side to the other, even the little ones) which tells me they are not being good taken care of. Later we walked to the bathing area. The keepers would hit an elephant with the hook. I already wanted to go out, but then we just walked away. It's a shame that this is how elephants are being taken care of in a conservation center. Give the elephants some natural ground to roam around with an electric fence/natural barrier. The hook and so on isn't animal friendly at all. For me it was a waste of money seeing they profit of this kind of behavior.

We visited Thai elephant conservative centre on a weekday and arrived early, so the place was very quiet with hardly any other visitors. It made the experience feel even more special and personal. There are two elephant shows during the day — we watched the elephants painting and showing different skills such as pulling logs, dragging timber, and even playing sports. The highlight for us was definitely joining the elephant bathing at 13:30. It lasted about 20 minutes and was truly one of the most amazing experiences of our lives. Being so close to these gentle giants in the water was unforgettable. Highly recommended if you want a unique and meaningful encounter with elephants in Thailand! 🐘💦

My visit to the Elephant Conservation Center near Chiang Mai was excellent and exactly what I hoped for. The atmosphere is noticeably peaceful , a huge plus if you want to avoid the typical tourist rush and chaos that can plague other spots. What struck me most was the large number of magnificent elephants and the genuine care they receive. The staff are truly friendly, welcoming, and clearly passionate about their conservation work, which made the experience feel very professional and informative. If your travel goal is a quiet, respectful, and less crowded opportunity to observe elephants, make this center your top choice!

elephant activities : bath, show, nursery, hospital, school. all staffs are nice.
ClothesForCloud D — Google review
This is blatant animal cruelty. Every elephant was tied up, and separated from all others, they had no access to food and water, and one of the baby elephants was struggling to reach a tiny puddle near it, and when it finally reached it it blew the water on itself. They looked over heated, standing in the sun trying to cover themselves with wet mud. Many were straining to leave their chains. I do not recommend giving this place any money. In the photo attached to this review, you can see multiple elephants, they are tied to chains which are approx 1 meter in length, they are physically separated from one another, and are not near to food or water.

Park
Doi Chong National Park is a hidden gem nestled in the mountainous southwest of the province, boasting a peak that rises over 1300 meters. This compact park offers breathtaking panoramic views that are well worth the effort for those who tackle its challenging hiking trails. The journey to the summit, located about 7 km from the park's headquarters, rewards adventurers with stunning vistas and an invigorating experience amidst nature.
Doi Chong National Park is a haven for hiking enthusiasts! The trek might be a bit exhausting, but the views and experience are absolutely worth it. I took 3.5 hours to ascend and another 3 hours to descend. However, if you're a seasoned trek runner, you might even beat my time! If you find yourself in Lam Pang or are just passing through, making a stop at this national park is a must. The staff are incredibly welcoming, and the facilities at the summit are decent. There are bathrooms, shelters, and a cooking area available for hikers. From the peak, you're graced with panoramic views. To the east, gaze upon Sop Prap and Mueang Districts, while the west showcases the beautiful Soem Ngam District. Moreover, the hiking fee is quite reasonable. You can indulge in this unforgettable adventure over just 2 days and 1 night. Highly recommended for anyone seeking a genuine hiking experience!

1 star because of the higher prices that people who aren't thai have to pay. The waterfall tad pu la has terrible and minimal signage, very confusing throughout. And when you arrive the last 50m to the waterfall has no path, so you will probably continue walking past it as I did. Most people will probably give up near the start where the path has been washed away, but if you get there and if you find it, it's a disappointment anyway. Probably 3 metres tall and even after heavy rain not very impressive. There is another waterfall - khun mea Yong, not sure where that one is. I think the whole point of this national park is the 8.5km hike up to doi chong, but since that needs to be booked well in advance and is a serious trek with an overnight stay on the mountain required, your typical day tripper tourist won't find much to do at this national park. The camping area is nice, overlooking the reservoir.
P J — Google review
Very nice crew. Unfortunately, it was too hot for me to reach the waterfall. Maybe next time.
Paweł — Google review
(Translated by Google) The position and atmosphere are very good. There are 2 walking routes: the one to the mountaintop is approximately 8.5 km. and the one to the waterfall is approximately 2.5 km. There are options for people who want to walk in a variety of ways. And each route is not too difficult. The place, both the accommodation and the bathroom, looked new and clean. (I haven't camped yet.) It's an interesting place for both occasional and regular hikers. But it was deducted from 2 stars because there were very few road signs to the point of feeling unsafe. Many points are intersections, but there are no signs indicating which way to go or which part of the park this route leads to. Especially on the way to the waterfall, there are many intersections, but I don't know which way I should walk to reach the waterfall. Personally, I am a person who has trekked through many places and has walked more than ten kilometers. But we couldn't walk to the waterfall because there were so few signs that we were afraid of getting lost in the middle of the forest. Until walking in the wrong direction 3 times and not having prepared enough water and food to walk around to find the exit) I'm a little disappointed in this part. If anyone wants to try walking It is recommended that you find a guide. Because you might get lost in the middle of the forest. (There are always signs warning you not to walk off the path. But it didn't clearly tell me which path I should take.)

Located across Lampang and Lamphun provinces, Doi Chong National Park encompasses approximately 336 km² of forested mountain terrain, crowned by the 1,379 m Doi Chong Peak. A highland oasis of dry dipterocarp and evergreen forest, the park is noteworthy for its seasonal wildflower and orchid blooms (notably Fah-mui orchids) and panoramic views. Visitors are permitted one-day or overnight trekking trips (max. 20 people per day) to the summit, which offers misty ridge views and camping. Other attractions include scenic viewpoints, waterfalls, and reservoirs. Basic services include tent camping with restrooms and showers; visitors should be self-sufficient as no food or lodging is available onsite.

(Translated by Google) The atmosphere is very good. The tent area is wide and not cluttered. There is plenty of parking. The bathrooms are clean. I recommend walking up to Doi Chong as well. The weather is good up there. There are mostly steep slopes. There is no fire or gas stove upstairs, but there is a stove + cooking area. There is a bathroom and shower room. Bedhouses may not be recommended at this time. But I think that in the future there will be improvements in this area 😁 The staff are kind. Park
Tham Pha Thai National Park, located about 60 kilometers south of Lampang, Thailand, is a breathtaking natural attraction that draws visitors with its stunning limestone cave system. The park offers an opportunity to explore rainforest hikes leading to cliffside caves adorned with dramatic stalactites and stalagmites. One of the unique aspects of this park is the free admission for all visitors.
Great cave, free entrance. Well preserved. You need to climb steep stairs to get to the cave. There's an officer waiting to show you around. You can walk 450m into the cave. Some area can be a bit slippery. There are bats in the cave. Best to visit this place in the morning to see light beams shining through the cave.
Patrick T — Google review
A cave in the middle of nowhere on the way to the North. No entrance fee at all which is a big plus BUT you really have to walk quite a bit to get to the cave and the way up is super steep.
Pongsatorn H — Google review
This place is a miracle in Thailand, where foreigners usually pay five times more than Asians to enter the national park. Admission to Tham Pha Thai is FREE for all. A cave of the same name is spacious and about 400-500 m depth. To enter there, you need a local guide. Usually, it's a ranger, but on weekends, the local children assist the visitors. Being just about 12-15 y. o., they can tell you about this place, show the most remarkable places inside. They spoke in Thai only, but they promised to learn English. So adorable. They help doesn't have an official price, so don't hesitate to donate them for their kindness. I'm very thankful to the staff and plan to revisit the cave. This time, with a tripod and different lenses. In my list of beautiful caves in Northern Thailand, Tham Pha Thai is in the top 5.

This place is an amazing, unsen part of Thailand, let a lone Lampang. It is just off of Highway 1 as you are going to Phayao. The admission fee is an amazing price of...FREE. When you arrive, you can get a local guide to go with you, so you won't be entering the cave alone. Some of the structures inside the cave range from 15 years to 8 million years old! And, if you enter the cave at the right time, you can see the magnificent rays that come out of the holes from the top of the cave (around 9-10 am). How to get there: You can take a mini bus starting in from of the vocational college. They run pretty much ever thirty minutes. You can tell the driver to drop you off at "Tham Pha Thai National Park." Once you arrive, it is about a 20 minute walk to the entrance of the cave. Once you have completed your journey, make your way to a local bus stop to flag down a mini bus to take you back to Lampang. You can also stay the night as well. Contact the national park. They have many sleeping accommodations.

Doi Khun Tan National Park is a vast and diverse park with multiple elevations, featuring lush forests, diverse wildlife, and a variety of flowers. One of its notable attractions is Thailand's longest train tunnel, which stretches 1.35km through tropical jungles. Visitors can explore bamboo forests, wildflower meadows, orchids, and lily flowers while hiking up one of the four mountain peaks within the park.
There are two campgrounds. I was at the base campground. Yaw 2 is another campground where is higher and you can reach there by walking around 1.5 km. The entrance is closed at 5 pm for Yaw 2 campground. I did a hiking to the viewpoint around 5 km from the entrance . (they around you to park the car near the entrance, 2 km from base camp). The nature along the way is nice. The top of the mountain is also very nice.

Arrived by express train from bangkok. Hired a truck from one of the food stalls to get up to the national park. Walk the trail, which is around 10 km round trip. The restaurant here closed early around 4pm so ordered food ahead. Nice NP lodging. Easy to moderate trail.
Vithida S — Google review
I visited this national park at the end of Nov. I stayed here for 3 nights and was very happy. There are many wonderful things abt this place and besides also has some inconvenience. However, i still love it so much and surely will be back next year. My notes hope it would be helpful: - The weather was still not too cold, temprature from 19 -25c degree. - There was no streetlights at night, just the lights from headquater, so it was perfect for stargazing. - Glorious sunrise! Though I had to get up at 2.30 am to climb the mountain. It completely deserved. Btw, I did not camp in Yaw 2 camping site as most of people did. I stayed in a bungalow, that's why i had to get up early. And i was a solo traveler, i think this place was quite safe to walk at night even being alone or no streetlights. - Wonderful sunset! For sunset, you can watch from the main restaurant or from the hill opposite. - Staffs here were so nice and friendly. Not all of them spoke English and I did not speak Thai, we used Google translation to understand each other and they were willing to help and gave me useful advices. I really appriciate that. - There was not many visitors on weekdays, so it was quite quiet, just sound of birds, insects and wind. - The map and signs were all clear and detail, so if you follow the map, you will not be lost. The hiking trail was well maintained and easy to walk. - Restaurant: food was good and price was reasonable, staffs super friendly! - Only 1 restaurant (welfare store) open on weekdays, so you must walk a little bit far if you need to buy meal or drink, except you stay in bungalow area or Camping site 1 (temporaly closed). On weekends and public holidays, maybe they open 1 more restaurant and some food stalls in camping sites. - In Yaw 2 camping site (people often camp here) only had toilet and bathroom (no food stall, no lights, no electric, no guards, no internet), so you need to prepair everything before you climb the mountain. - Most of the bungalows are near the paved road, sometimes you hear the sound of vehicle, but not too noisy. - The restaurant opens from 7am -6pm, but it is quite flexible, so you should come after 9 am and before 5 pm to make sure it open. - I took the train from BKK to Khun Tan station. From the train station, there was a nature trail to get to Doi Khun Tan national park (1.3 km -abt 30 mins walk). Buy ticket 100 bht for foreigners at the main gate. After that, go to Visitor center, you can ask staffs here whatever you concern and rent bungalow or tents if you need. - There was a paved road for vehicle from visitor center to Nature trail and there was a parking lot at the starting point of Natural trail. From here if you want to get to the summit of the moutain, you must walk. From the starting point of Nature trail to the top, you will pass: Yaw 1 (abt 200m -5 mins walk), Yaw 2 (1.5 km -30 mins walk from Y1), Yaw 3 (3 km -1h walk from Y2), Yaw 4 -summit (1km -20mins walk from Y3). - There was a trail from Yaw 2 to waterfall and then back to headquater, it was slippery, far, whole route is over 4.5 km and took me over 3h trekking and it was a small waterfall. Best time to visit is rainy season (Jul -Nov).

A definite middle of nowhere viewpoint. Quite a site. You can take the morning train to this place and the afternoon train back to Chiang Mai. There is coffee and the usual Thai snacks and food. You can also view the tunnel and go for a hike up to the national park. If you’re up at the national park, you can walk down to the train station, but I would start at the train station if I were you.

1. Convenient Travel: You can easily reach this place by train from Bangkok. I recommend booking a first-class or second-class seat for a comfortable journey, which takes around 10 hours. 2. Beginner-Friendly: The hike to the camping area is approximately 5 km, with an additional 4 km to the viewpoint. You can wake up around 4 am to reach the viewpoint in time for the sunrise. 3. Local Shop: There's a local shop before the tent camping area. While prices might be slightly higher than elsewhere, purchasing here supports the local community. 4. Cooking Restrictions: Cooking is not allowed, but you can boil water.

It’s a bit steep drive but, worth it. It’s a working Train Station.

It's a nice and tranquil walk up a few steps, very lush vegetation, there was water, not too much ... really beautiful

One of the most unkempt national parks I've been to in Thailand. It felt like I was the only one who set foot there in weeks.

Wat Phutthabat Sutthawat, formerly known as Wat Chaloem Phrakiat Phra Chomklao Rachanuson, is a hidden gem nestled in the hills of Lampang, Thailand. This remarkable temple features both large and small pagodas perched atop a limestone ridge that rises about 800 meters above sea level.
Beautiful hidden gem of the north! It's a great trip from Chiang Mai through the mountains to Lampang. Keep in mind that the only way to the top is via a small truck that will take you and then walking up around 2km. The park admission can only be paid in CASH so please make sure to bring enough. 400 Bhat per foreigner

"Wat Phra Phutthabat Sutthawat" is one of the unseen temples of Lampang or of Thailand. The unique of this temple are large and small pagodas scattered on the top of the rock along the limestone ridge on the west side of Chae Hom District which has an average height of about 800 meters above sea level and about 500 meters above Chae Hom District. There are the well maintained staircases for 500 meters long to walk up to the summit with 10 rest areas and 180 degree stunning view. Car parking lot, coffee shop and local restaurants are available at the hill.

Unseen Lampang! Don’t miss this place at all cost! It’s just re-open this December. To get up there you need to ride local’s car. The car will deliver you to the stairs and that’s where the fun begin! It’s a lot of stairs but it worth every pain in your legs. Once you get there at the top you will forget all your struggle down below! The view is AMAZING! The mountains, the sky and the most beautiful pagodas. On top of small mountain tips you will find pagoda that you start questioning who built it and how much faith do they have? It’s nice to have a bottle of water with you when you start climbing up the stairs but don’t be worried the local will remind you to buy one.

The place is nice, but I hate the fact that I have to pay 4 times more than my friends going up there. I have been living here, working here and paying tax for 15 years. This whole dual price thing is ridiculous. They also accept only cash, with no ATMs in sight. No PromptPay, no card, no transfer, only cash.

The view is worth your effort and pain

Will be visiting again. Wow the sky pagoda are so unique
Billy A — Google review
We really wanted to visit this place, but didn't check the price before. 490 baht for foreigners is too much for one temple although probably a nice one. We didn't go because of it. Sorry, but please make some reasonable price.

Interesting park with the amazing view point to see the whole Lampang city. The staff there is extremely friendly and welcoming. There are tables and chairs for visitors to sit and there is a toilet as well here. Very peaceful area to enjoy a wonderful day. Thank you!

Nhong Krathing Park is a spacious and inviting park with a clean and pleasant atmosphere. It features large shade trees, a serene lake, and a well-maintained playground for children. Visitors can enjoy leisurely walks, jogging, or biking around the 600-meter path encircling the lake. The park is family-friendly and even welcomes dogs. I recently had the chance to stroll through a peaceful and shady garden. The atmosphere was so refreshing — like stepping away from all the chaos of daily life. Colorful flowers, fresh green trees, and the gentle sound of birds created a truly calming vibe. If you’re looking for a place to relax or a beautiful natural spot for photos, this garden is a perfect choice. Just walking around gave me so many ideas and a boost of positive energy.

An enjoyable space for brisk walking exercises especially in the morning. Suitable for families too l, including those with children as there is a play area. I was here during the mornings of the weekend and there was a wide range of interesting pop-up stalls with food, beverages for breakfast and to take home. Also was entertained by a bunch of seniors singing happily with music on stage!
Peter P — Google review
Good for family with kids and senior persons. Live local music on the weekends. Food stalls everywhere. On Sundays, I heard that there is a baby elephant coming till afternoon, for kids to take pictures. However, baby goats are here on Sat-Sun, basically. You can feed them at only 20 thb. per a bottle of milk. Super cute goats. Goat milk ice cream is great also.

A recently fixed up park (last 2yrs according to a local friend). 600m directly around the little lake, and very busy with runners early evening (before dusk). Nice place to come for a walk or run. Also has a nice playground for kids. Very family friendly.
