We visited the Stagakis Cretan Lyra workshop and museum yesterday (20-May-25). Whilst very small, it was an absolute pleasure to be able to see how the instruments are manufactured and also have a demonstration of the various types of instrument which are manufactured on site. The small team at the workshop are very knowledgeable and the entire production process was explained from start to finish. Keeping in mind that these instruments are hand made and small works of art, prices are very reasonable. If you are visiting Crete, I would very much recommend a visit.

Definitely a highlight of our recent stay! Despite not being string players we found this super interesting and enjoyable. Mikaelis demonstrated lots of the traditional instruments for us which was amazing, and he allowed us to have a go. He described the process of building these wonderful instruments in outstanding English which we really appreciated. Overall, a really brilliant experience I would definitely recommend to anyone visiting the area!

Highly recommend! I’d wanted to buy a baglama for a long time, and I figured there was no better place than Greece. The staff were super friendly and welcoming. They let me try all the instruments to find the one I liked best (which was tough, as they all sounded great). They also gave me a bag, strings, and picks, and even recommended what strings to get in case I couldn’t find special baglama strings later, which was very thoughful. The owner gave me a small tour of their workshop, showed me other instruments, let me play a lyra, and shared a bit about the shop’s history. The price was very fair, especially for a handmade instrument. The quality is excellent, it stays in tune perfectly. Even after a two-hour drive and a four-hour flight back home, I barely had to adjust anything. Overall, it was the best musical instrument buying experience I’ve ever had. Now, I can’t put my baglama down.

Jul 2025 • Family On Monday, July 7th, I had the privilege of visiting the Stagakis Cretan Lyra shop — a place that’s so much more than a store. I’m not a lyra player (yet), and I’ve never played a bowed instrument before — I’ve been playing electric guitar for over 33 years — but something about the lyra kept calling me. And now I understand why. When we arrived — my wife, daughter, and I — the shop wasn’t open yet. Still, the people working there welcomed us warmly. That was the first sign that we were entering a place where hospitality is just as important as craftsmanship. Eventually, we were greeted by Manolis Stagakis, grandson of Manolis Stagakis senior, the legendary luthier who’s widely credited with inventing the modern Cretan lyra. Even though I was a complete beginner, Manolis and his team took the time to show me several instruments, explain the differences, and let me hear and feel the sound. I was blown away by the quality and soul in each handcrafted piece. I ended up falling in love with — and buying — a semi-professional lyra made by Manolis himself: maple body, cedar top, and a katrani fingerboard. It sounds as beautiful as it looks. But this visit was more than just a purchase. Manolis gave us an unforgettable tour of the museum and family history, telling the story of his grandfather and the genesis of the modern lyra. It was moving and inspiring. And just when we thought the visit couldn’t get any better, my wife asked if someone could play one of the baglamas hanging on the wall. One of the co-workers played a beautiful tune — and then, to our astonishment, Manolis gifted the instrument to our daughter. A moment we will never forget. Since then, I’ve started taking lyra lessons in the shop with Tzanis Tzanidakis, a fantastic teacher. The journey has begun. If you’re even remotely curious about the lyra, or if you simply want to see true Cretan craftsmanship and meet people who are passionate and generous, visit Stagakis. You may leave with an instrument — or something even more meaningful. Just like I did. Highly recommended.

It was a wonderful experience from the first moment we walked in. The musical instruments, the history behind them and the direct hands-on experience made the moment unique and very special to us. It's really close to the old town, so don't miss the opportunity to visit this gem.

We arrived very late and close to closing time but were warmly welcomed. It was amazing to hear about the time and skill that go into crafting such beautiful instruments. Everything was explained clearly and every question we had was answered with knowledge and passion. We had the chance to try the instruments and were shown the workshop with demonstration of how the different tools were used and how different sounds could be shared by the carving of the wood. I couldn't recommend visiting this place enough. It has Cretan music history in its 80 out so years' foundations and it's clear it will continue to be a part of its future. No fee for the entry and no hint of pushiness about leaving a tip but I did so gladly.

Absolutely amazing! My husband wanted to buy a handmade instrument, and both of these guys were so brilliant! If you love music? This place is a must visit! Such beautiful craftsmanship! We will be back when we visit Crete again!

We heard really good things about the restaurant and we were excited to try, but ended up pretty disappointed. We ordered « a puff pastry » with feta cheese, lemon, rose, and fig. However, it was three different pastries with fig, rose jam, and lemon jam. It wasn’t quite our taste. For main dishes, we ordered the lamb/pork burger and rigatoni with pesto and pork tenderloin. The burger was delicious, but the accompanied fries were a bit hard to eat. The pesto dish was quite oily and not as flavorful. We didn’t finish the dish. We were given complementary cake and raki which was nice and tasted great though. The servers were friendly and everything was given within a good time. Unfortunately, we didn’t enjoy the rest of the food much.

Another good restaurant in Rethymno Old Town. Food, atmosphere and service were top notch. Especially starter (greek meze platter) and deserts were delicious. Location is perfect and you definitely can feel the authentic greek taverna. Yes, they don't have usual greek food, but is more like fusion between greek and modern cuisines. Definitely worth a visit when you're in Rethymno.

This restaurant is truly excellent — everything from the food to the service to the atmosphere is top-notch. The staff were warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming, and the setting is beautiful both inside and out. The interior, built within an old stone structure, gives it a charming, authentic feel, while the outdoor seating area is cozy and full of character. The menu is rich and varied, with many well-crafted Cretan dishes. We ordered several plates, all delicious and nicely presented. The traditional Cretan salad was great, the cheese bites with different toppings were amazing (especially the fig one), and the stuffed vine leaves were excellent — and I say that as someone who grew up eating them at home. We also tried the sea bream carpaccio, which was fresh and interesting, though the fruits on top slightly overpowered the fish. Still tasty, but the balance could be improved. The only drawback is the price — it’s quite expensive. It doesn’t ruin the experience, but it’s worth mentioning. Everything else, from the food to the service, was truly outstanding. After dinner, the staff even helped us find a table at the bar just behind the restaurant, which added to the overall experience. A beautiful place tucked between the alleys — definitely worth a visit if you don’t mind the higher prices.

Enjoyed my dining experience at Raki Ba Raki. Beautiful restaurant setting with seating out on the street. Nicely decorated restaurant. Service was good ,our waiter was really lovely ! Quite a big menu with vegetarian options at meat. Our food was really good and I enjoyed it but wasn’t outstanding. Highlight was the fried potatos (amazing). Complimentary orange cake and traditional liquor at the end. Good drink selection and wine list. Nice play to go out for dinner.

We came at around 8pm on a saturday night without reservation and were able to get a table directly inside. Food was served quickly but we felt a bit rushed (Waiter came for our order while we were still looking at the menu, the starter and main dish arrived before we could even finish our first drink and we noticed lots of looks from the waiters to see if the table needed to be cleared, although we weren’t even 15 minutes into the main dish). Food-wise, very good dolmas, and the octopus with fava bean puree was perfectly cooked. The homemade pasta was disappointing though. Pretty overcooked and overall felt heavy. The chocolate baklava had a good taste and texture.

This restaurant is a must visit place if you are in Crete. The food is very delicious, the portions are large and well prepared. The staff are very polite and welcoming and the restaurant is so well decorated. I suggest the lamb and the oxtail. Overall I strongly recommend it!

Avli is a well-known, upscale restaurant that’s been around for years, and we were excited to finally dine here. Many dishes were well prepared, made with fresh ingredients, and the staff were attentive. However, the seafood pasta was a real let-down. Despite being described as fresh and homemade, the pasta tasted overcooked or reheated, and the prawns were tough and chewy – likely from microwaving. The sauce had good flavor, but the texture and freshness simply weren’t there. For a restaurant with such a long-standing reputation, and an owner with multiple establishments on the block, attention to quality should be consistent across every dish. Unfortunate for what could have been an excellent experience.

We had a romantic and very special dinner at Avli. Service was amazing and everybody has deep knowledge about the menu. We did not have any reservation and could find a table for two. But still I would suggest to have a reservation. Their wine selection is wide.

Avli was hands down our favorite restaurant on our 3 week trip across Greece for ambiance. It’s a stunning and unique restaurant experience. We sat in the open courtyard full of fruit trees and plants - so beautiful and relaxing, it’s a perfect place to spend time with friends and good food. We walked through the inside seating and the interior is beautiful as well. The service was impeccable, drinks were delicious, and the salad & entrees are high quality.

The location, the courtyard, the food and service were all wonderful. Our first table was partly in full sun but as soon as a shady table became free the waitress kindly and efficiently moved us. I enjoyed the most amazing slab of melt-in-the-mouth lamb perfectly cooked and presented. My wife had a beautiful salad which was also very good We’d eaten here 5 years previously and were nervous about going back in case the excellent experience last time proved unrepeatable. No worries there! We were not disappointed

We had lunch on the very cute courtyard. The service is good and the food as well! We recommend the fresh fish fillet and the lamb : the meat cooking is PERFECT!

Be aware that Avli seems to be multiple things; the courtyard and outside. We got a fantastic table in the courtyard and ordered a grilled fish (Grouper?) and the rooster. Arrangement of the food was top notch, the fish was served in a soup with with local vegetables which wasn't my favourite. The rooster was nice but contained a little cartilage. I'm sure I'll come back again and find something that is more to my taste.

The courtyard is so beautiful and tastefully decorated, the food is presented so nicely and it is delicious, the staff is very knowledgeable and always willing to help. 7 days ago I bought cbd oil 25%, 100ml, in this shop. I came for several days and the saleswoman kept persuading me to buy, I saw that there were some kind of labels on the bottles, so I thought it was okay. However, this oil of oregano has that smell. There is no effect of cbd. I used to take cbd with less % in England and it was great. I have been scammed, . This is a pure fraud and I don't know how they are not ashamed to smear the reputation of a company founded so long ago. I am from Serbia, the oil was bought in Rethymno in the Old Town.

Don't buy there, they try to scam you. They are selling 100ml CBD oil labeled with "25% CBD". However it just contains 2.5% CBD and not, as suggested 25%. Furthermore the label stated it contains "Hamp seed oil", it was filled with olive oil. Don't waste your money there.

First time I have such a bad experience in Crete. The products are not organic. They distract customers by showing things on the screen while the ingredients list (fine print on the box) is full of harmful chemicals. Nothing bio there. The lady put all my products in the bag and sealed it. After a long stroll I got in the car, opened the bag and oh what a surprise it was! I read the ingredients list and also noticed the scrub was opened and used. I returned to the shop to get a refund, they were extremely rude and unprofessional. Basically they told me I shouldn’ve read what was written on the box (in fine print) and not what was on the screen. Lesson learnt and what a waste of money! Ah I forgot to mention she said the expiry date for the magic snail products was 2020 and in fact it’s 04/2019. Steer away from this shop and these products if you don’t want to spoil your day in beautiful Rethymnon.
