The 18 best things to do with kids in Atami

A beach popular with locals as well as tourists to Atami. There is a breakwater promenade on the south side if the beach, hosting a pier for recreational boats, and is a nice place to sit and relax in the evenings. The sun is strongest here in the mornings, given that it faces east.

We visited Sun Beach in August 2025. Although the posted swimming hours are 9:00-16:00, in reality most continue to swim after that, just without lifeguards. The sand is soft and the water is fairly shallow and calm. It is very nice to come at night for the illuminations. There were also many families doing fireworks in the sand. There are coin lockers, toilets, showers and footwashes (free), and dumpsters on the beach for trash.

I went there on Friday night to see a firework show hosted by the atami city. Although I was a bit late, I still found a decent spot for photos. The Japanese people are really disciplined and polite so there wasn’t any people squishing and pushing around. The beach is also really clean with little rubbish only. There is also a small park beside it with water fountains and some nicely decorated handrails. Overall, the environment and atmosphere is amazing with great hygiene. Nice firework show that you can view closely on the beach, with relative not much crowd. The show lasts for around 20 minutes which is relatively short compared to other cities in Japan. It's a pity that they don't have any pop-up stores that sell food or souvenirs. Not many decent restaurants nearby too.

There is not much to do there, except enjoying the boat trip and refreshing breeze. There are few restaurants but you will mostly have to queue. I would not recommend to visit the island unless you have to kill time. Plan well you return to make sure you don’t wait too long for the next boat to return Atami.

Magic little island. Loads to see. Recommend a visit but plan ahead to get access to the things you want to see. If you aren't staying make sure you keep an eye on the last ferry time as they don't wait!

It is a small island which is about 30 mins traveling by boat from Atami. The round-trip ticket price is ¥2600 yen for adult and ¥1300 for children. I spent about 4 hours on the island.

Not worth being here unless you travelled all other places you can visit and nothing is left, or if you already have a reservation for scuba diving. Many ppl were fishing here so maybe that’s the other option you will have here. There are basically not much things you can do. Limited number of restaurants benefiting the vested interests mostly being so rude to customers prevented me to even try queuing. If you are starving and you are cool about arrogant restaurants, you can of course try queuing but ppl say there’s only a few restaurants serving good food so you will need to choose the longest queues (again, this is what I heard but not something I tasted and compared) Speaking of scuba diving here, I did see some random fishes and the visibility (on September) was not bad. Maybe joining an advanced group might even lead you to see some better stuff. The dive shop I attended (located in Atami) was nice as the staffs were kind and friendly. To sum-up, for the scuba diving part, I’d say it’s good for training or maybe for relaxing underwater having a chill dive...but to this island, I don’t think I will visit again.

I came here end of Feb 2025 and most of the plums fully bloomed. The garden is very beautiful with scenic setting, walking trails and a small foot bath at the end of the garden. There’s a waterfall where you can go inside

What a beautiful park. It's not lit up, so you want to go there during daylight hours. The museum/memorial is located within the garden and has strict opening times. While the garden is free, the memorial requires a small entry fee. We strolled around the garden in April. Water was gushing down the streams and over small falls. There are tributes to other cultures, including Korean. At this time of year, the plants and trees are blossoming. There are a number of places to sit and enjoy the ambience. A very relaxing energy. The walkways are wheel chair friendly. A few people were taking their dog for a walk. I didn't see any big dogs, though. You can get get drinks at vending machines at the entrance. Otherwise, there is a 7/11 across the road. The walk from Kinomiya train station is moderate in difficulty.

Pictures as of 22/Feb 2025. Park was bigger than expected and a great hike up if u choose to walk from the blossom bridge, I would suggest taking the bus. Visitors are plentiful but not overwhelming. Price for local residents and tourist staying in Atami is 100yen and others are 300yen.

It’s unfortunate we weren’t there for the blossoms. A wonderful way to spend 3 hours. Waterfalls, gardens, beautiful trails. Admission was only ¥100.00. You won’t be disappointed.

I visited on 1st Feb. The plum blossoms were not in full bloom and a lot of trees were still bare, but it was still beautiful! The foot bath is very hot, so be careful if you are sensitive ~

Around 8 minutes by taxi from Atami station. No need to buy ticket for 梅園. Although it was raining but the 紅葉 was amazing. This place is with very good maintenance and worth to come. You can walk around and take bus near by the museum. The museum is a peaceful place but need to buy ticket. We entered but mainly to use the toilet there(sorry to say that).(photos taken on 12/15)

Other than going up for the view...I don't know if it's worth the inconvenient wait. The queue for the ropeway ticket was a few hundred people. I queued for more than half an hour and still not at the ticket counter. There are no ticket vending machines, and only ONE counter open for ticketing. Very inefficient system.

They have stated it’s the shortest ropeway and since most shops do not open till about 10-11am we decided to go for it. It’s only a 2min ride leading to a fantastic sea view on the hilltop. An adult museum and Atami theme park castle which we never visited. The ropeway is old and surrounding facade look tired but there is a rustic charm. We find the port interesting leading to a lemon island also.

It is dated and short ride. However, it is the only way up to Atami castle and great view of Atami. It is pretty $$, 900 for adults and 500 for kids round trip. The ride only last 2.5 mins.

It was a short ride but fun. I didnt like my wife and I having to wait 20 to 30 minutes for a que (line of people) to buildup. The cart could have been up and back down like 5 or 6 times by then and so having to wait did nothing but waste our time.

We tried the Atami Ropeway since there isn’t much else to do around town and the price seemed fair. The ride is super short — less than 2 minutes — and runs every 15–20 minutes (or when there are enough people). Make sure to grab a good spot for the best sea and mountain views, especially on a cloudy day! It’s also the easiest way to reach Atami Castle.

I when here whith my cousins, but this place doesn't have many safety regulations so I almost died here many times and I haven't came back here since. (The playground equipment is very slippery and is also on a very VERY steep drop) I feel like the toilets have to be cleaned more, but I'm not sure for real because I haven't come back since the "almost died" incident.

It's a long but not difficult hike with lots of jungle gyms for kids to play on during the trek. Good car parking, reasonable toilets and great views

This is by far one of the best parks I’ve been to anywhere. If you like hiking, flowers, trees, birds, streams, views, forest smells, cleanliness, bathrooms, parking, maps, vending drink machines, etc. etc. go here! I recently discovered this park and have taken 3 different routes all amazing. On top of that there are challenging exercise courses all along the course maybe 50 or so. Warning that it’s difficult for the first half as you start below but keep in mind it’s downhill and easier on the return. If you are ambitious you can go to the observatory above the park where you will see 360% breathtaking views of the surrounding areas including Mount Fuji. I recommend the flower bed path to the top which takes you on a path perched between two gullies on the left and right beautiful. There are maps everywhere. There are a few challenging paths that include ropes and steep trails but rest assure I see 8 year old kids doing it easily. This is a popular place for families and kids and I’m am amazed how fit they all are.

A very nice and well landscaped sports park located on the hills overlooking Atami city with beautiful views of the ocean to the east visible on clear days.

Good place but climb mountain is a little bit tired

There is a lots of tools to play with physics, so fun and healthy.

There are not many shops at this “shopping district”. Most of the businesses are restaurants and ice cream shops. Not worth the visit if you only spend a little time in this city.

I don't know about this place but i like the owner response to other comment that they will make atami ginza better. That attitude is very good. I respect that. I will visit in 7 December to watch the firework also.

Great place to pass your weekend afterwhich; strolling down to the beach passing lots of old shop houses. Fishcakes at the shopping is delicious with many different flavours and choices.

On the Atami hillside overlooking the Sagami Bay is a a gem of a spot where nature is nurtured to bloom. The acao forest is a collection of 12 themed gardens, art installations, shrines and one of the most stunning views of the bay especially on a clear sunny day. It is best arrive here by car and there is ample parking. Tickets can be purchased at the entrance but u save yourself 20% with an online purchase of 2000Y for entry. I recommend taking the shuttle to the top of the hill side and slowly make your way down by foot to enjoy all the gardens. At the top, it is a short hike to visit the shrine, the land art park and some of the gardens. The whole area is fun to explore and don’t forget your camera as the various cliff side views, swings, seats make for great pictures. Even in the midst of winter where the bloom is at its lowest it made for a great day out. There is a cafe cum cocktail bar near the summit and a lovely Italian restaurant at the base. Both are worth a visit just for a meal with a view!

I also had the pleasure of visiting **COEDA House**, a café designed by the renowned architect Kengo Kuma. The structure elegantly mimics the shape of a tree, harmonizing perfectly with the surrounding landscape. I enjoyed a delightful cake and coffee there, making for a truly pleasant afternoon. Overall, ACAO Forest is a must-visit for nature lovers and photography enthusiasts alike!

Amazing place with a spectacular view! It’s a bit on the pricey side, but the service makes it worth it—the bus driver even went out of his way to return a passenger’s lost sunglasses. It’s best to arrive early to avoid crowds and to get great photos. They even have selfie stands, which is perfect for solo travelers. Highly recommend!

When I was there in May, the rose was blooming. So pretty!! We took the shuttle bus to the top, but I enjoyed it more on the walk from the top to the entrance.

At the top they have shrine, botanical garden and a cafe. As you stroll down you will enjoy great views and some surprises waiting for you . Cafe is nice with different pizza menu. Shop is good. For access: bus stop is just outside the garden.

Ended up here by accident, but it was a beautifully maintained forest/garden. When you get there, you pay a small fee to be ridden on a bus to the top of the mountain and then you start to make your way down. It's not that bad of a climb but if you have leg problems you may want to consider taking the bus down which I saw some people do!

A very well kept train station with modern design and brigh lights. There are shops there with friendly staffs for you to explore and get last minute souvenirs or a bite to eat before boarding your train. Depending on where your going from Atami station, you may be able to get the exact time slots for departures/arrivals. And if so, it's best to find that out ahead of time. Going to Tokyo, I waited for about 20 minutes. That's just the nature of a non busy station. So plan ahead of time. If not, no worries. They do have a shopping area connected to the station that you can explore a bit while waiting for your train.

From this station, you can get to Hamamatsu from the westbound train on the Tokaido Line , from the eastbound of the Tokaido Line, you can get to the center of Tokyo (Shinagawa, Tokyo, Ueno) and also on the Ito Line, you can get to Ito and Izukyu-Shimoda. We love supporting local businesses here in this super quaint Tanna Valley. This is a privately owned recreational center that exists to showcase the dairy community. There is a mini zoo which is in need of much “lovin” from visitors, some customer reviews would definitely help.

It’s a good place to stop by if you have kids when you are traveling from east to west izu or vice versa. Free admission and free parking. You can buy food for animals for 100 yen. To milk the cow is 300 yen but you can only do 5 squeezes which I thought was a bit rip off. We spend 1000 yen to have kids ice cream. One ice cream making experience would have been enough doe 6 of us. They sell local food on weekend and I enjoy buying their local food. Overall kids had great time.
