1Kenmare Stone Circle

Mentioned on
6 lists
Kenmare Stone Circle, also known as the Shrubberies, is a significant pre-historic monument from the Bronze Age. It stands out for its egg-shaped design and consists of 15 boulders with a central Boulder-Dolmen believed to be a burial site. The stones are aligned with lunar and solar events, indicating its likely use for rituals or ceremonies. This attraction is easily accessible from town and forms part of the Kenmare Heritage Trail.
It is a drive through the town to reach the stones. There is an honesty box out for donations and a small shop of gifts. They hand you a tag that you write a wish to hang from the fairy tree. It’s cute and a quick stop.
Lisa B — Google review
There is no entry fees but there is a board at the entrance requesting €2 per person to be dropped, for maintenance and upkeep. Not much except a nice round arrangement of stones. Lots of parking adjacent to stone circle. Quiet place with a stream flowing behind
Kevin T — Google review
If you are doing the Ring of Kerry yourself, this should be on your list for a stop. We were there in the off season, February, and there was no one else around. It costs a couple of euros, and there is an honor box, so bring coins. The walk is very short. The circle is well preserved. There is a tourist-mistreated fairy next to the circle. It is obvious that no one has a history of fairies and wishes by the items hung on this tree. It would be a better experience is people read about hawthorne trees before "making a wish" here, or if there was a placard with some of that information.
Nicole B — Google review
Small but nice stone circle, was busy when we arrived but soon we were the only ones there. Magical feeling to stand among the stones. 2.50 euro entry, and you can write a wish and put it on the tree. Maybe mine will come true one day!
Lewis G — Google review
Super cute spot and fun experience for €2.50, the hawthorn wishing trees are a really nice touch
Monique H — Google review
The stone circle is charming. It is a very short walk from Kenmare, which is equally as charming! The stone circle offers history, fairy trees (were you can leave a wish!), and cute souvenirs, with an authentic and respectful air. We really enjoyed it.
Jessica S — Google review
It is a short walk from the town centre. Parking is available. Lovely location next to the river. Honesty box available when entrance is unattended. If in Kenmare, definitely worth a visit. There isn't much to see, you really need to use your imagination as to what went on there up to 4000 years ago. You can write your wishes on a card and attach it to a hawthorn tree, card supplied at entrance.
L C — Google review
Such a magical spot, not to be overlooked when visiting Kenmare.

Park
Nature & Parks
Reenagross Woodland Park Kenmare, also known as Rinn na gCros, offers a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of town life. Originally a private park for the Marquis of Lansdowne, it now welcomes locals and visitors to explore its 3km walking trails along the Roughty River. The park features picturesque nature views, native flora and fauna, making it an ideal spot for a leisurely stroll or a family picnic.
Not on any recommended Ring of Kerry sites but we popped in and did the Fairy Garden walk and The Meadow walk. Just lush, quiet beauty and the Meadow walk (1.3 miles out/back) runs along a stream and finishes at a nice, little waterfall. Best of all, it’s free!
Ken C — Google review
beautiful forest along the river. i've spotted a wild bunny, squirells and little birds here. there are a few of trails that overlap through forest (less than 1km). overall, very pleasant experience<3
Nat N — Google review
Not huge, but a lovely place to walk with several looped trails, both woodland and open/water settings. Gorgeous and ever-changing views. Many dog walkers. Park at the back of the golf club car park or walk up through the hotel entrance from town.
Lisa F — Google review
Meh, if u are in Kenmare and have time to waste go for it. Don’t expect the Beara Way experience. Its a nice little park, but misses a lot TLC a l o t. The only way to end the suffering, on ur way out fleeing this sad place, take the exit via the park hotel and enjoy the scones or the bar - drink yourself into oblivion and forget the park !!
Stephan L — Google review
This park is nice but I won’t be recommending it to friends. From the photos here online, it appears much bigger and more beautiful than I found it. (Of course, time of year is a factor here!) but I just found it to be a bit dull and much like many other walks. It is somewhat difficult to find, hidden behind a golf club without clear signage. If I lived locally, I would likely come here for a walk but, as someone who came travelling through the area, it felt more like a mistake to have redirected to come here as it was nothing particularly special for me. Lover’s walk is quite sweet and probably the highlight.
Ciara O — Google review
Beautiful place to walk at any time of year.
Info R — Google review
Beautiful peaceful place, what a wonderful amenity to have in Kenmare.
Natasha A — Google review
A really great walk and very easy to follow the signs inside the park. The views are serene. However, the entrance to the woodlands for cars is wrong on google maps. It instructs you to drive through the hotel carpark. The woodland itself is behind the hotel area, but you will have to park elsewhere outside. Pedestrian access is available through the golf course, but is also available behind the hotel. The attendants at the hotel are very friendly and are aware of the Google maps error so they will be able to assist further.

Coffee shop
Bakery
Cafe
Maison Gourmet is a charming French cafe located near Crowleys, exuding an authentic Parisian vibe with traditional bistro chairs and a classic French menu. The spacious premises feature large pastry and food cases showcasing divine French pastries and bread. A menu board near the entrance displays drinks and specials, while cozy decor and soft music enhance the patisserie's ambiance. Recently, they have extended their hours to offer a fabulous evening menu with carefully chosen wine at reasonable prices.
I couldn’t wait to write this review because these were the best pastries/baked goods I have had in years! I did not expect to find a bustling French bakery in a small Irish town but I’m glad I did! It was very busy but worth the wait. We had a sausage roll which put all others I’ve had to shame and some sort of pizza bread. Delicious! I wish I was going back to this area just so I could eat some more! Update: we came back a few days later and got the same order and it was just as amazing!!
Ali B — Google review
Fantastic cafe with outdoor seating. We stopped here for breakfast and it was superb except there was no bacon which I found strange but everything on the plate was amazing and I especially loved the toast and the homemade beans. They also had a good selection of cakes which are all made in house as are most things available I think. Definitely worth a visit if in the area
Ian B — Google review
A nice place to have coffee, tea and dessert. They also have soup and toasty but unfortunately we were not able to try this because they were finished. We had cappuccino, tea and three deserts. The cappuccino and tea were good. The lemon meringue was delicious. The strawberry tart and the apple tart were good.
Dr. S — Google review
Great coffee and cakes! There queuing system works once you understand that 1st line is for take away and 2nd for dine in. Loaf of bread was brilliant and lasted for 2/3days better for toast after 2 days.
Eamonn B — Google review
French bakery with exceptional pastries that feels like a Parisian cafe, it looks small but there's plenty of seating further back. The chocolate tart is so rich and decadent. The strawberry tart is light and sweet. The croissant is flakey and buttery and served with fresh jam. They also have traditional baguettes and savory bites to eat.
Mark M — Google review
Loved the fresh French pastries here. Didn’t order coffee here, just pastries. Absolutely amazing pastries, highly recommend.
Praneet R — Google review
We were there for lunch, they were out of one of the sandwiches and I asked to substitute for a quiche, they said there’s a price difference, I pointed out just 30c, so they gave me a quiche, which was delicious. Unfortunately the soup was like water, I think they watered it down as they were busy. It was thin and tasteless. The deserts and pastries looked great and fresh.
Patrick C — Google review
From an American perspective, this pastry shop offers some of the best pastries I have ever tried! The Cinnamon and Apple roll was absolutely delicious, and the coffee was fantastic too. My fiance loved the seeded baguette and her flat white. It was the perfect stop before our road trip to the Ring of Kerry. The staff was super friendly, the prices were reasonable, and there is street parking available. Thank you for a wonderful experience!

Kenmare Ice Cream offers a delightful selection of unique Irish flavors, all handmade in Kenmare using locally sourced milk and cream. Visitors can enjoy the best raspberry ripple and mint chocolate flavors, as well as other delicious options like Baileys ice cream and salted caramel. The friendly staff provide excellent service, making it a must-visit spot in this charming town. With reasonable prices and generous scoops, this ice cream shop is a highlight for any visitor to Kenmare.
Fantastic ice cream, and wonderful service. Went above and beyond to serve our kids at closing time. Highly recommend.
Joe B — Google review
I wanted to give 3 stars, but my husband very much enjoyed his three flavors of ice cream. Server wasn't very interactive at all, didn't seem like customer service was her job. I had espresso (very good) and salted caramel (very soft, almost soupy). I chose the unique 2 sided cone, which was cute in presentation, but was stale and had a bad taste--definitely not the way to finish off dessert.
Theresa T — Google review
It was alright. I didn’t think the scoops were as big as someone else in the reviews described, maybe a different employee served us. I had the chocolate chip and banoffee and they were nice enough but pretty average in terms of ice cream quality and scoop size.
Lotje H — Google review
Very reasonable for locally made icecream. Great selection of flavours and lovely staff. I’m from Kenmare and my daughter loves trips here for a scoop
Sunshine T — Google review
There was a good selection I got raspberry sorbet it was very taste.
Sarah J — Google review
Lovely ice cream. €2.80 a scoop may sound expensive but all you need is one scoop. Lovely flavour and large scoop, certainly didn't need two. Cone very fresh and didn't get soggy at all. Will be back.
Peter M — Google review

Nestled in the heart of Kenmare, O'Donnabhain's offers a delightful blend of traditional Irish hospitality and modern comforts. Just a short drive from the stunning Killarney National Park and Beara Way Walk, this guesthouse is conveniently located near local attractions like St. Patrick's Church and the Kenmare Heritage Centre. Guests can enjoy recreational activities such as bicycle rentals or simply unwind on the terrace while soaking in picturesque views.
We enjoyed O Donnabhain's. The food was good and the services were pretty nice. It was a pretty touristy-feeling place so we fit in well as we are also tourists. They have live music at 9pm but we didn't stay for that. Everyone really enjoyed their food, the cottage pie, beef lasagne and Guinness stew. My favorite part was trying the flight of local Kenmare beers.
Andrea A — Google review
good food, in the evening very crowded but a good option if you like living places
Karsten R — Google review
My wife had the bacon and cabbage and I had a burger. My sister had the salmon….all were fantastic. Highly recommend!
Jarod G — Google review
I had the turkey and ham which was a daily special on their menu on 31st May. The food was below average. As can be seen in the photo the Turkey was incredibly dry and the potato was inedible. Overall very disappointing.
Aidan S — Google review
I had to leave a review because my kids loved this place. We ordered a burger although I can’t remember what it was called. We’re from California and my stepson said it was his favorite burger of all time, even better than In n Out. He’s a very open-minded eater but very discerning, quite the foodie already. My stepdaughter, on the other hand is extremely picky and will frequently refuse food and she also liked it. We’ve been home for a week but I wanted to remember to leave this review.
Ashley G — Google review
The host family is very cheerful and genuinely concerned about the well-being of their guests. We ate the best fish and chips here so far (after many trips to England, Scotland, and Ireland). We spent five wonderful nights there. On the second floor (room 112), you can't hear any live music in the evening. Perfect, we'd come back anytime!!
Oliver F — Google review
I was there with my family last Saturday. It was quite expensive for the price. The chowder was very good, but the Irish stew, aside from being more expensive than other places, was super dry and bland. I don't recommend it. The Coca-Cola was even bottled (I assume it was on tap), and the beer was warm, not to mention the time we spent waiting for our food. In short, there are better options nearby, and the food will definitely be better. We've been living in Ireland for three years, and in most places, you pay half the price for the same thing, and it's much better.

Historic Sites
Cromwell's Bridge is an ancient structure dating back to AD 500, originally built to connect monks to a sacred well. Despite its name, it was not actually associated with the military leader Oliver Cromwell. The bridge was funded by Sir Richard Shireburne for the purpose of aiding Protestants in crossing the river to attend services at a nearby church.
Small ancient bridge, full of charm. Worth a visit if you're in the neighborhood
Floriana D — Google review
I actually found this little bridge to be quite fascinating. A mysterious structure just in the back of a neighborhood. There is a pleasant little green space around it and a bench. But the bench area was a bit messy, and again, you are sort of in peoples back yard to some extent. Despite some of the litter, I found the whole scene very peaceful, and the bridge itself very interesting.
Kevin M — Google review
No easy way to see it, walked in the river to view. Super cute though!
Jamie A — Google review
Fantastic spot for a few drinks the morning after a wedding.
Ryan S — Google review
Difficult enough to find. Dates back to about 500AD. Worth giving a look if you are passing.
L C — Google review
Lovely setting, with an amazingly well-preserved arched bridge over the river on the western edge of Kenmare. The spot is easily accessible, yet feels secluded. We were the only visitors during our 20 minute stop, and it was refreshing to feel solitude in an otherwise busy area. The name, Cromwell, refers to the shape of the bridge, not to Lord Cromwell. In Irish, cromwell roughly translates to 'moustache', and is a reference to the bridge's distinctive shape.
Margaret R — Google review

It is known for being an economical and well-organized store with a great selection of DIY products. Located conveniently with ample parking, the store is praised for its cleanliness, friendly staff, and spacious aisles that are wheelchair-friendly. Customers appreciate the relaxed atmosphere at checkout and the well-stocked shelves with great prices.
I had a wonderful shopping experience at Aldi in Kenmare, Ireland! The store is clean, well-organized, and easy to navigate, with spacious aisles and ample parking. The selection is excellent—fresh fruit, dairy, meat, and everyday household items are affordably priced and neatly displayed. I was especially impressed by their avocado spread and seasonal Specialbuys, which offered great value. The staff were friendly and helpful without ever making us feel rushed. Even at the self-checkout, assistance was available and quick. Whether you’re doing a full grocery run or picking up a few essentials, shopping here feels relaxed and efficient. For affordable, quality shopping in Kenmare, this Aldi is a fantastic choice. Highly recommend!
Praneet R — Google review
Use to be great but since the new self checkout system Aldi became terrible experience. A full trolley with no cashiers available and had too many item for self checkout its was a complete disaster and no space to pack as too many items on my trolley. I won’t be going back. Lidl is a popular supermarket chain with locations outside the UK that are larger and less crowded than those in the UK. Despite not having a massive selection, it offers enough variety for most shoppers. The store has good prices and generally maintains a decent selection of items if visited earlier in the day. It is clean, has ample parking, and friendly staff. Additionally, it shares its car park with a Supervalu store and an Aldi next door.

Stopped off at here for lunch before heading home from a great few days in Kenmare. Kids had pancakes and we had the Lobster salad. Bit pricey at 22.50 for a salad, but with lobster, smoked salmon and prawns it was definitely value for money. Great treat to finish off the holidays!

We had booked this restaurant and requested a nice table to celebrate our 27th wedding anniversary on the 22nd August. It was such a treat. Everything was just perfect, the food was delicious, lovely atmosphere and so covid compliant. But it was our server (Annette we think was her name) who made our night so special, as we had mentioned when reserving that it was our anniversary she wished us a very happy anniversary and then provided us with some complimentary prosecco and a hand written.card. in the current climate when there is so much else to be thought about such as covid etc this can only described as providing a fantastic customer experience it absolutely made our night. Thank you so much!
Jo D — Google review
We went there for brunch and everyone left very happy except from the two people who ordered Eggs hollandaise. The eggs were fully cooked, and the bread not toasted. Honestly we expected a bit more. The chicken and waffle was a hit, delicious!!!!! Fresh chicken, very tasty and nice waffles. The staff was polite and friendly and the place very cozy.

The park features tumbling cascades and mountain lakes that provide breathtaking views of delicate green meadows.
Well worth a visit with spectacular views and plenty of opportunities to take breathtaking photos and videos. We were greeted by Sheila, who was very friendly, chatty, and informative. It's a bit of a trek, but I'll definitely be back.

This spot was amazing! We spent our last full day in Ireland following part of the red and purple trails here. We were a group ranging from 4 to nearly 70 snd everyone loved it! The views are amazing! We loved walking with the sheep, that was the highlight for my two girls. The host at the reception at the entrance was super helpful in helping us to decide which hike to do and even provided my girls with some lollipops! We loved it here, definitely a must do if in the area!

Absolutely beautiful. Lady at reception was so friendly as well. Perfect 2hr hike if you're in the area. We did the purple trail and then joined the red trail back around. Would highly reccomend

Amazing views on any trail wht you pick. Proper boots need for the yellow trail. The purple is lovely heritage trail. River walk available The red trail touch the top of the waterfall. Enjoy

Incredible place, so many beautiful spots and angles for photos. Do pack some good waterproof shoes if visiting. The routes are really well organised and marked and the park owners/staff were very welcoming and helpful. A unique example of Ireland's spirit!

We discovered this beautiful park almost by accident as we found ourselves with a half day in the are we were not expecting. We were delighted to discover that our dog was welcome. The road in is exhilarating and a really fun drive. Sheila is fantastic and although we arrived at 4.30, we were assured that there was no problem setting off at that time. We didn't really have any proper walking gear with us so she recommended we do the Heritage trail which takes about an hour. We took a bit longer as we loitered at the punch bowl lake and the beautifully evocative famine cottage . I would 100% recommend a half day or full day here if you have the time. Bring a picnic! €7 entry is a bargain! Thanks Sheila and family

Fabulous views. The red trail is a good hike … recommend starting from the waterfall as that’s the hardest part done first and then you can really enjoy the views on the way down. The yellow route has the steeper part done by the time you get to the divergence of the route into left for Red & right for yellow (waterfall start). There’s still climbing/scrambling over rocks and inclines but wow, the views. You definitely need boots for the yellow and would recommend for red too as rocky and mucky in parts. Both trails are easy to follow. You’ll feel tired & elated at the end!

Amazing place, such beautiful scenery and warm welcome from the couple & their 2 girls , not to mention Johnny the black sheep!! We did the red & purple trail over the top of the waterfall, took just over 2 hours at a leisurely pace. Easy location to get to, plenty of parking, trails very well marked. Remember to bring cash as no wifi in this scenic area. We will be back to do the yellow trail soon. Definitely one for the bucket list when you’re in south Kerry.

This garden is a unique experience that offers visitors a chance to explore nature and art together. The garden features various sculptures and plants that are inspired by sheep, as well as educational information about the animals. The garden is fun and engaging for all ages, and it's sure to provide visitors with a memorable walk in the woods.
One of the most delightful and inspiring gardens I have ever visited. I understand the house is now up for sale so if you want to go, go now!! Wish I had enough money to buy it, it’s truly living the dream…

Special corner in the world!! Visit this summer if you are anywhere near Cork and Kerry border. Has its own sense of magic in there. Hope whoever purchases this property in future will preserve its wonder!

I’m so glad we got to see this before it closes. Imaginative, challenging in parts, thought provoking and great fun - only a couple more days to run but I’d definitely recommend it

Really nice peaceful place. The sound of the waterfall followed us around the while way. Kurt and Sheena have really put their heart into the place. It's an awful pity it's closing.

What a magical place, I loved every minute of it and enjoyed watching the kids reactions as we stumbled across hidden creatures, finding secret spaces, making beautiful music. It's so good I want to go again on my own so I can read all the gorgeous poetry, totally taking my time wandering thought this mystical place. I've been aching to get here for many years and I'm so glad I did before it finally shuts buts doors at the end of August. Thanks so much for creating this joy filled place where everyone experiences the wonder of childhood again.

Glengarriffs amazing treasure - a must see for every visitor to West Cork especially anyone interested in nature, the environment, humanity and the universe. Sheena and Kurt have painstakingly and beautifully created an amazing journey through the natural forest surrounding their home. The level of detail and research into every piece of art and learning is incredible. I can only describe it as a passionate labour of love inspired by the desire to present a view of the world and nature that every person should encounter. While it’s possible to simply walk through the kaleidoscope of learning in a short timescale I highly recommend giving at least 2 hours to fully engage and immerse yourself in all that’s on offer. You will not be disappointed. Thank you Sheena and Kurt for the love you have put into this project. It’s a great reminder of how we live in harmony with nature and how we need to sustain that with important lifestyle choices. The earth will thank you for your passion.

Really beautiful little piece of waterside woodland, full of the owners art, poetry and thoughts on geology, history, the environment, human development, etc. We found it an inspiration.
