Local history museum
Located in the picturesque town of St. Michaels, Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum is an 18-acre waterfront venue that offers a deep dive into the bay and its people. Visitors can explore exhibits, take part in activities, and even enjoy boat rides. The museum's working shipyard showcases the region's maritime history, while a stroll along Talbot Street provides access to colorful shops selling everything from premium olive oil to crab-adorned T-shirts and hats.
We didn't know what to expect with this museum, but were really impressed by it! It is very well worth the visit, and there's more than enough to see in the 2 days the admission fee covers. At the beginning, someone went over the map with us, and explained some about the buildings. That was really helpful. It's not just a museum, but an entire complex of various buildings that are really each museums. I couldn't possibly do it justice by describing it- if you are considering going, you definitely should! I really enjoyed seeing the variety of boats, and the building that was built all around an oyster boat was probably my favorite. You could walk through it, hearing about it with the narration, and seeing all the different parts. There were fun facts about oysters all around, as well as a complete history of the oyster business in the area, canning, and even oyster wars! The lighthouse was pretty interesting, and showed all of the keeper's quarters set up, as well as some information about the various keepers, and a big map of all the area lighthouses. There was a whole building that showed about the blue crab, and the crab picking industry. There was a building that had lots of history and information about people enjoying the water in various ways over the years. As you walk around, the view of the harbor and the water is beautiful as well. The museum store is beautifully arranged, and contains a great variety of souvenirs and items having to do with the water.

I absolutely love the Maritime Museum on a visit to St. Michaels. Great staff, great price, wonderful views of the bay. So much history for all the family to enjoy!

The newly renovated entrance is beautiful! We haven’t been in probably a decade, but it’s very well done and there is lots to see. Kids had a great time. Views are stunning.
Alex N — Google review
Beautiful museum and campus of buildings make up the museum property. We did the patriot boat tour and museum combo. The boat tour is listed as a 70 min narrated historical tour, but it’s more commentary than history. It was a great time and the different buildings at the museum cater to all ages. There is not much to do in St Michael’s other than eat, shopping and boating, so happy we went.
Beth K — Google review
We had heard this museum was a must see and it didn't disappoint. One fee for a two-day ticket that was not expensive. There is a lot of area to cover, so it was nice to know we could come back. We visited in October so it was not crowded. We spoke with a very friendly painter who had been working on one of the boat and he told us a bit more about the place. Plenty of self-guided areas and exhibits. We enjoyed the ship building work - it was interesting to see the process step as well as the volume of lumber stocked and waiting to be used. Beautiful views from the lighthouse. I enjoyed walking among and reading about the exhibit boats they had on display, each with a detailed history of ownership and uses over time. Amazing. The collection of outboards showed the changes over time - I can't imaging heading out into the sea with one of those old-timers even when it was brand new. Definitely worth the time and money.
John W — Google review
I really enjoyed this museum and its emphasis on local maritime heritage - crabbing, oyster catching and boat building. I spent a couple of hours wandering around the various buildings and learned a lot.

The 1879 Hooper Strait Lighthouse, located at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in Maryland, offers a glimpse into the spartan life of its keepers. This well-preserved 19th-century lighthouse served as a guide for boats passing through Hooper Straight. Visitors can explore the interior and climb to the top for stunning waterfront views. The museum provides insights into Maryland's maritime history, including shipbuilding and oystering.
The lighthouse and immediate area surrounding it are clean, safe and well-maintained. The grounds are fun to explore and easy to navigate. This is an amazing photo spot during the sunset magic hour. I look forward to my next visit as this was a worthy stop of the road trips..

This lighthouse has quite an unique history which our museum guide shared with us. It was moved here years ago and inside furnitures and rooms have been preserved as best as possible. View of the bay was really nice, nice and windy.

What a treat it was to visit the inside of the lighthouse! It was a self-guided tour with lots of history. I've always admired it from the outside, and it was great seeing it and imagining living in it as a lighthouse keeper on the inside.

A small, but very well curated museum telling the story of St Michaels with lots of artifacts. The volunteer docent who was there when we visited really knew the history and did a great job interpreting the exhibits.

Pizza restaurant
Ava's Pizzeria & Wine Bar in St. Michaels is the original branch of this Italian chain, known for its creative Italian cuisine featuring wood-fired pizzas and fresh local seafood. The restaurant takes pride in using the finest ingredients, making their own olive oil, dough, and mozzarella. Its charming space with a retractable roof and dog-friendly patio attracts plenty of visitors. Despite its low-key vibe, it's a popular spot among pizza lovers and wine connoisseurs alike.
We enjoyed a fantastic casual lunch at Ava's. We shared a Ma's Meatball Sub and added a second side of chips for an additional $3. The roll, the meatballs, and the sauce were exceptional. Katie did a great job serving us. The patio was a nice place to dine and the staff opened and closed the retractable roof as the weather changed during our meal. The whole experience was great!
Michael A — Google review
Do you like dry pizza, that's mostly just crust? Does no cheese make it even better? How about 35 minutes to get that beer you ordered? For the chef's kiss, how about you and your food sitting directly beneath a dripping vent. If this sounds like a fun night out, then look no further! All joking aside, the place was a little busy, and the manager was clearly hustling. If the service was just slow, I wouldn't even give it a second thought. Our first server, who handed us off to tend bar, is the bar tender who took 35 minutes to fill the order that she took. Before our main dishes arrived, we asked our second server if we could relocate due to the 'rainfall', but we were told that all other tables were being held for reservations. The empty table next to us sat empty for most of the time after we asked to switch, but was then taken by a couple that walked in with no reservation. I was excited by this place and the excellent reviews, but needless to say we won't be returning.
Andrew K — Google review
Great food, great service! I had a mushroom tart pizza on GF crust with vegan cheese that was actually outstanding! My friend had the mushroom ravioli also reportedly fantastic. The server had great energy and was so good. We will be regulars here!
Deborah A — Google review
Had a craving for late night pizza and Ava's delivered perfectly. We arrived 20 minutes before closing, but the manager insisted on seating us. Even though we were the last customers, they didn't rush us out. We shared the Bianca Pizza. Lots of cheese and not dry at all. The seasoning was also perfect. I would love to go back and try a regular meal. Highly recommend.
Alice G — Google review
Took a solo trip and decided last minute to stop in for lunch. Ordered the margarita pizza that did not disappoint. The crust & sauce was amazing. I also ordered the spicy strawberry margarita which looks small, but packs a punch! I'd highly recommend this place if in the area.
Sabrina F — Google review
We were full from a big lunch and went in for drinks and a bite. We sat at the bar and were served immediately. The bartender was very friendly and helpful with the specials. We got the tomato and mozzarella plate and two of Ma's meatballs. The plate came with thick slabs of bread that was perfect with olive oil, and balsamic glaze. Tomatoes were fresh and the mozzarella was buttery and delicious. The dinners that came out around us looked and smelled great, but we we could not fit another bit after finishing off our apps. Certainly would go back hungry next time.
John W — Google review
We had dinner at Ava’s and absolutely loved it! Our favorite meal of our entire trip! The patio was perfect with a rain storm coming in the atmosphere was picturesque! Food was perfect and the beignets were AMAZING

Since its establishment in 1987, Justine's has become a beloved local favorite for both residents and visitors alike.
Loved this place. Located in the heart of St. Michael's. Went there for an ice-cream and got a great experience. From the posters inside to the full story of Justine's ice-cream directly from the owner. So many flavors and all of them so delicious.

Been coming here for a couple years. My husband always gets a hot fudge sundae. The last two times the sundae has been very small with very little whipped cream and hot fudge. We will not be getting another, miss what it used to be and the price isn't cheaper for the cheaper product

Delicious ice cream shoppe in a quaint, charming town! Caramel cold brew and cookies & cream flavors were amazing! Within walking distances from several restaurants and cute stores.

Vintage icecream shop with yummy flavors! We ate too fast and forgot to take photos of the icecream 🍦 Maybe next time.

My wife and I were looking forward to this place all weekend while we were in town, and it didn't disappoint! We both ordered shakes, the German Chocolate and the Chocolate-Covered Marzipan shakes. Although they both sort of look the same in the pictures, they were delicious and unique. The German chocolate one had a lot of coconut in it and a whipped cream topping. The Marzipan shake had a great Marzipan flavor. It was nice to see the workers were both wearing masks! Definitely a good dessert shop!

Justine’s is awesome! We got the brownie sundae with mint chocolate chip and the single scoops were huge; you definitely get your moneys worth. The overall taste was absolutely delicious, I wish I could try everything on the menu. Would definitely recommend and go back!

A delightful little ice creamery! Lots of flavors and suggested combinations, and an ice cream challenge! They have a ton of shake and float options as well, and plenty of seating if you want to just chill out, though their cones are perfect for waking. St. Michaels Winery is a local gem offering 18 different wine styles in a charming year-round tasting room and retail shop. Visitors can indulge in tastings of locally produced wines while learning about the winemaking process, all while enjoying stunning views of the surrounding vineyards. The winery is housed in the historic Sewing Factory Building, adding to its unique charm.
I highly recommend this spot if you’re in the St. Michael’s area. This was my first time and my fiance and I stopped by for Valentine’s Day and apparently it’s been built up since the last time he visited with more shops in and around in walking distance. The winery itself sits inside with an artists boutique so you can wine and shop. The winery selection isn’t too bad if you have a sweeter taste in wine. If you like more dry, the reds are the way to go! The best and most surprising one was their chocolate Zin. The service is what makes this place a 5 star! The staff that served us was so nice! She took time to not just pour the wine but actually talk to us and shared some stories and chatted for a while! It also looked like everyone in there was having a great time along with the staff.
Ahra J — Google review
A great little spot for some great wines, local cheese. Nice and quaint and dry whites and sweet reds Chocolate Zin is awesome !!! Chardonnay is great as well Also tried the Vidal Blanc, Gollywobbler Peach, Gollywobbler Black. Definitely stop by!!!
Shane R — Google review
St. Michaels Winery, located right on the main drag of charming downtown St. Michaels, is a must-stop for any wine enthusiast exploring the area. Its convenient location makes it the perfect mid-stroll break, offering a relaxing and enjoyable tasting experience. The fact that it boasts its own parking lot is a definite plus in a popular tourist destination like St. Michaels. Even better, it's flanked by both a brewery and a distillery, creating a trifecta of boozy delights for those so inclined. Inside, the tasting room is comfortably arranged with tables and a bar, providing ample space to sample their diverse selection of wines. The tastings are incredibly reasonably priced, around $1 per pour, making it easy to explore the menu without breaking the bank. What truly elevates the experience, however, is the fantastic staff. They were knowledgeable and engaging, expertly guiding us through the wines with clear explanations and maintaining a lively, enjoyable pace throughout the tasting. While Maryland might not be Napa Valley, St. Michaels Winery offers some surprisingly enjoyable wines. We certainly found a few that we particularly liked. Overall, a visit to St. Michaels Winery is a fun and worthwhile activity. Whether you're a seasoned wine connoisseur or just looking for a pleasant way to spend some time in St. Michaels, this winery is definitely worth checking out.
Brad R — Google review
5 stars for the service and experience, a bit less on the wines. We are red drinkers, so we stopped in for a tasting. I liked that you could taste any of the available wines one at a time for a small fee each. Unfortunately they didn't have any reds so we tried the chardonnay and a vidal blanc. Both were nice. They had a sangria that I also tried. It was not too sweet, with some tart cranberry background. We didn't try the sweeter wines. We stopped in about 4PM on a Tuesday in October, so it was not crowded at all, but I could imaging it would be very busy in the peak months. We chatted with the person serving and she gave us some great recommendations in the area. Very friendly and welcoming.
John W — Google review
Amazingly deep wine selection both dry & sweet. And their chocolate wine is both rich and smooth. It’s not thick and undesirable.
Natasha M — Google review
This place deserves more than a 4.1! Over 20 wines to choose from. We had 10 tastings and they were all very good. Crazy but they were only $1 a tasting if you wanted to mix it up. The staff was super friendly and made the experience special. The location is right off the main road into town. Although it's more of a tasting room it is, nevertheless, very cute and inviting with plenty of outdoor seating. I highly recommend these folks!
Mike S — Google review
The location is great and service was very good. Inside the tasting room is really nice and it hares the building with an art gallery/gift shop. Unfortunately the wines were not to our taste and they don’t offer any reds except for a very sweet chocolate dessert wine.
Kaycee F — Google review
All the one stars are legit. There were two staff members behind the bar, one male, one female. The male treated me like I was in the way and didn't belong there. Both staff focused on several couples who were tasting, expecting some big cash. NONE of them bought any wines. The male told me they had absolutely no reds left and that all the white wines were sweet, except for the Sauvignon Blanc. I HATE sweet wine, so I finally managed to get a glass of Sauvignon Blanc. It had no taste. However, the female staff member was much friendlier. She poured a nice chocolate Zinfandel, of which I purchased a bottle. Otherwise, there was no explanation about the history of the winery, its vineyards or processing, zilch. I will not go back. Go to Bordeleau instead! MUCH better.

Sail Selina II offers a unique experience for those looking to explore the waterfront. Visitors can rent kayaks or paddleboards from Shore Pedal & Paddle, take a sunset cruise on the sailboat, or go biking between St. Michaels and Tilghman Island. The boat sets sail from Knapps Narrows Marina on Tilghman Island and provides a smooth ride along the Chesapeake Bay.
Sailing with Captain Iris was one of the best parts of our trip to Saint Michaels. She is so knowledgeable and her knowledge of the history of the beautiful homes we sailed by was amazing. And to add to our adventure, Captain Iris saw a smaller sailboat in distress and with her expertise, Captain Iris was able to rescue the boater and tow him and his sailboat safely into the harbor. What an amazing experience and Captain Iris is one in 1 million. You would definitely enjoy a sale with her on the Selena II.
Diane P — Google review
My daughter and I absolutely LOVED our two hour sailboat ride aboard the Selina II and recommend it highly. Iris, our captain, and Matt were wonderful and engaged us in great conversation and imparted a wealth of knowledge about their unique boat, the beautiful area including it’s history, and all things nautical. I also enjoyed a delicious glass of champagne onboard. If you are traveling to St. Michaels, I highly recommend you book a trip on the Selina II. You will disembark feeling relaxed and refreshed and wanting to do it again the next time you visit! Thank you, Iris and Matt for an amazing adventure!
Tiffany P — Google review
What a wonderful experience! Very intimate short trip, just 2 hours. Just six passengers with Captain Iris and first mate John. We were not experienced sailors and we were made to feel very comfortable while getting the real "on the water" vibe. Lovely early afternoon spin in the beautiful "Selena II" with some wine and lovely conversation. Highly recommend! Glad to be a tiny part of her 100 year journey. Would have done the evening sail but they were sold out. Charming.

My newlywed husband and I celebrated my 60th Birthday with a special trip upon the Selina II, and what a special trip it was. Captain Iris and her First Mate John were so very knowledgeable, not only about the Selina but about surrounding boats, breathtaking homes and famous Inn’s, and even the nautical history of the Chesapeake Bay area. We were there for an especially terrific sail as we joined a long boat canoe race that was taking place during our trip. It was surreal to be able to glide around the long boat as they struggled to catch the wind that day. It was truly magical and something we intend to repeat the next time we’re in the St. Michael’s area. We highly recommend you charter a trip with Captain Iris and the Selina II!

We are so grateful to have had the incredible opportunity to sail aboard Selina II with Captain Iris, crew, and other guests. This is an experience you don’t want to miss when visiting Saint Michael’s. This history of the vessel and family of stewards over the decades is nothing short of astounding. Make sure to take advantage of this opportunity before Selina II finds a new port of call. Captain Iris and her vessel are one of a kind. The experience will leave you with a smile every single time it crosses your mind.

We celebrated our anniversary with a Champagne Sunset Cruise aboard the Selina II - what a beautiful night. The sailboat is gorgeous and Captain Iris and the crew made every moment interesting. Great info about St. Michael’s, wonderful views and a joy to be on this beautiful vessel.

My husband and I sailed the Selina II on August 31st, and it was such a relaxing and fun trip. Captain Iris is a joy and so knowledgeable about the Chesapeak and St. Michaels. First mate Matt was great and engaging as well. Overall, it was a 10/10 experience, and I highly recommend it.

If you're looking to soak up the stunning waterfront views without getting sandy, Shore Pedal & Paddle is your go-to spot in St. Michaels. This fantastic rental service provides kayaks, paddleboards, and bikes for exploring the serene San Domingo Creek or cruising along the scenic route between St. Michaels and Tilghman Island. For those who prefer a more leisurely experience, consider hopping on a narrated historical cruise or enjoying a sunset sail aboard the charming Selina II.
Great experience. Went in to rent a bike, and I ended up renting a kayak for an hour. The location is .1 miles from the water, so I enjoyed the walk over from the ship. The river was beautiful. I saw plenty of Blue Heron, Ospreys, snails, and oysters. It was a gorgeous excursion.

Dave was very nice and informative on the phone. We used a double kayak and it was in great shape. Area was beautiful and we saw lots of different wild birds. Would definitely do it again!

Great overcast day to explore the little coves and inlets. Saw great pockets of wildlife. Service was professional and reliable. Really appreciated that the owner helped with the load in and load out, including valet of our kayaks to and from the put-in spot! Can't wait to visit again (April-Oct).

Just had a great experience renting kayaks from these guys. We received friendly and efficient service. They gave us all the the necessary equipment as well as a map showing us the 2 hour route to take around the lake.

We reserved a kayak over the phone and arrived at our appointed time. The kayak was ready for us at once. They took it in their pickup truck and we had a wonderful time! Thank you

I rented a bike from here to do errands and groceries while our boat was anchored in San Domingo Creek. A great shop, very friendly and welcoming, and the bike was in good shape and rented by the hour which was exactly the flexibility I needed. Will happily plan to rent here again when we’re back.

Dave was very friendly and responsive to work with. We rented a kayak to be delivered to the rental property we were staying at for the week. Unfortunately for us, the property was not very conducive to launching the kayak. Dave very graciously picked the kayak up early and gave us a fair partial refund on the kayak rental. Highly recommend for their service, friendliness and flexibility!

David was amazing. They are not kidding about helping put the kayaks in the water! We arrived, 2 in our party signed up to kayak. David drove the kayaks to nearby launch, brought all the gear needed. Gave advice for the best experience. Really made it easy and fun, no hassle. Highly recommend.

Small but nice place to watching the boat and just relax.

Small park with a slide. Great spot for the little one to stretch his legs.
David H — Google review
This is a small park that is right by the water. There are a few picnic tables and benches in the shade, as well as a small pirate play area for children. This is a good place to sit if you are already in the area, but likely not a destination to visit on its own. Good lunch spot in St. Michaels.

The wife and I spend three days here earlier this month. We had a wonderful stay. We stayed at the bird of paradise cottage. It was charming and quiet. The staff were amazing. Breakfast was delicious each morning. Would stay again for sure!

We thoroughly enjoyed a few days at The Old Brick Inn with beloved friends! The room (St. Michael's) was spotless, comfortable and lovely. Breakfast was very tasty and Kyla was both professional and welcoming. Though we didn't see as much of Amy, she, and the gentleman who first welcomed us there also made our visit easy and lots of fun. Thank you to all of the staff ~ We'll be back!

If you're going to spend some time in St. Michael's, Maryland, the Old Brick Inn is a wonderful place to spend that time. They're so perfectly located right in the heart of the Main Street that there was no effort at all to check out all the shops and restaurants in every direction, and only a couple blocks to walk to the water. The breakfasts, which are included with the room, are better than most restaurants that focus on breakfasts. The staff are all friendly, and quick to see if you need anything. We will be returning.

Clean, large comfortable rooms, amazing breakfasts and a friendly, helpful staff. We were able to park our car and walk to everything in town. However, we would recommend against getting a room that faces Talbot Street. The morning traffic noise made sleeping in very difficult, even with earplugs. At night the noise was not too bad but mornings were very noisy.

Great stay. We had to travel last minute for an overnight stay and it was perfect. The location is excellent as we like to walk most places. Comfortable bed, fluffy towels, fridge, and coffee maker in our room. We stayed in Rhett’s Retreat. Breakfast was very good and in a lovely setting. The staff is friendly and helpful. We will definitely come back.

We spent 2 nights here in July and our stay was fantastic! We were glad to find there was plenty of parking available, we were greeted by friendly front desk staff and our room (The Tuscany Room in the main Inn building) was spotless, nicely air conditioned and even had relaxing music playing for us when we stepped in. Our stay included a delicious hot breakfast every day with different choices to pick from each day, and the staff members that handled breakfast both days were both so friendly and efficient and the food was delicious! The location of the inn made it possible to leave our car parked there while everything on Talbot street and the marina was an easy walk. I can't say enough about the Old Brick Inn and it's great staff of people really are the icing on the cake. Can't wait to come back again!
