Architectural Buildings
The Loggia del Lionello is a historic building located in the heart of Udine, Italy. It was built between the 15th century and showcases a beautiful blend of Gothic and Renaissance architectural styles. The building houses the Palazzo Comunale (the Town Hall) and features Venetian Gothic art with pointed arches and pink and white marble bands. Destroyed by fire in 1876, it was faithfully rebuilt to its original design.
Very beautiful arcade in Venetian-Gothic style, one of the oldest buildings in Udine. It reminds that in the past Udine was a part of the Venetian Republic. Very interesting place - you can walk through the arcade and enjoy nice view of the Piazza della Libertà via the arches. Also, nice view of the Loggia can be seen from the steps right after the Arco Bollani (on the way to the Udine Castle).

The waterfall is beautiful, but they have turned it into a children's park and charge 7 euros even if you don't use the park. Also it's cash only! Avoid at all costs!
Gareth S — Google review
The old townhall built in the Venetian Gothic style with white and pink marble at the most beautiful square in Italy. It was built between 1448 and 1457 to a design by goldsmith Nicolo Lionello hence the name. It was badly damaged by fire in 1876 but rebuilt as you can see.
Seimen B — Google review
A magnificent historic building. One of many that makes Udine worth checking out. Next door you have an excellent bar, Contarena. Udine past Venice up towards the border and seems to be unfairly overlooked.
Flying H — Google review
Nestled in the heart of Piazza Libertà in Udine, the Loggia del Lionello is one of the city’s most iconic landmarks, embodying both its architectural elegance and civic pride . Its roots trace back to 24 January 1441, when Nicolò Savorgnan proposed replacing the city’s humble administrative quarters with a grand new palace that would affirm Udine’s stature among the region’s great cities . After approvals and funding via a dedicated bread tax, work began in 1448, led by goldsmith-architect Nicolò Lionello, in collaboration with master builder Bartolomeo delle Cisterne. Construction concluded around 1456–57 . Made of alternating bands of pink and white stone, the façade is a stunning example of Venetian‑Gothic style. A portico with ten graceful arches defines its lower section, while the upper level features a central balcony flanked by two triforas and a decorative pentafora, enriched with medallions, bas‑reliefs of evangelists, and religious motifs like the Annunciation . Trials and Resilience Over the centuries, the Loggia endured natural and man‑made disasters. A powerful earthquake in 1511 inflicted damage that spurred repairs and enhancements, including structural reinforcements by Giovanni da Udine and architectural contributions like the Sansovino staircase and a Pordenone fresco of the Madonna con Bambino . In 1685, an accidental fire—started during celebrations of Venice’s victories—destroyed flammable furnishings. Although the building survived, many internal decorations were lost. Repairs followed, and a painting by Giuseppe Ghedina later replaced the original Pordenone work . The Loggia’s most devastating blow came in 1876, when another fire ravaged parts of the structure. It was faithfully restored by Andrea Scala, preserving the original design while safeguarding its future . More Than Just Stone Beyond its architecture, the Loggia served as the seat of the city council and a stage for social and cultural life. Frescoes by Nicolò da Venzone and Gaspare Negro, stained glass by Stefano di Settecastelli, busts of national figures, and meteorological instruments crafted by local artisans now adorn the interior or are preserved in Udine’s civic museums . A quirky historical detail: an early decoration featured a pulley and beam—used symbolically to hint at more sinister uses like torture in judicial proceedings of that time . A Story of a Moving Lion Legend says that one of the lions perched atop the Loggia shifts slightly whenever a just ruler is elected in Udine—a charming tale that connects architecture with civic virtue and keeps locals playfully watching for its movements ever since.

Just wondered around in the city and stopped at this wonderful loggia. It was a nice cooler day, but I imagine is must be a treat in the hot Summer days.
Csongor V — Google review
Today the Loggia del Lionello is a single corpus with the Palazzo degli Uffici Municipali, the work of the architect Raimondo D'Aronco and built in place of the ancient chancellery at the beginning of the twentieth century, in order to satisfy the needs of citizens. The Loggia del Lionello has a rectangular base that extends for 18.50 meters in width and 35.50 meters in length, while, in height, it develops for 15.20 meters.

(Translated by Google) Since the fourteenth century, near the portico, there was a small church consecrated to San Giovanni, which, during the fifteenth century, was rebuilt by the architect Bernardino da Morcote next to the new Clock Tower. The loggia, also admired by Andrea Palladio, is made up of two wings of arches and the triumphal arch that leads to the church, converted into the Pantheon of the Fallen in 1920 based on a design by Raimondo D'Aronco. Under the dome, there is a statue representing Glory, by Aurelio Mistruzzi, and a fresco by Enrico Miani. An elegant gate by Alberto Calligaris guards the entrance. Here, in the sixteenth century, the headquarters of the notarial archive, the chancellery of the bystanders and the fiscal chamber were established. The wings of the portico house a sundial dating back to 1798 and the busts of Giovanni Battista Cella (1881) by Andrea Flaibani, that of Antonino di Prampero by Aurelio Mistruzzi (1921) and that of Gabriele Luigi Pecile created by Leonardo Liso (1902).

(Translated by Google) Very nice We were in Udine on Easter Monday 21st April and walking around the historic center we arrived in Piazza Libertà. Initially, there was the Church of San Giovanni which, after the earthquake of 1511, was demolished and renovated by the Lombard architect Bernardino da Morcote, who in addition to rebuilding the church, designed the portico and the Loggia homonymous, vaguely referring to the style of Brunelleschi. In 1917 the Austrians occupied Udine after the defeat of Caporetto and restored the loggia of San Giovanni as a "Guard"; on 3 November 1918 Udine was liberated from Austrian rule.

The Museo Diocesano e Gallerie del Tiepolo in Udine is a must-visit for art enthusiasts. Housed in the Church of the Purita, it showcases Giambattista Tiepolo's masterpieces in the Gallerie del Tiepolo. The museum features an array of captivating paintings, sculptures, and a library with numerous codices. Visitors can admire Tiepolo's earlier frescos on the second floor.
This museum is so far the most beautiful place in Udine. The rich history of Friuli region is presented in the museum and it is worth visiting for sure. The location of the museum - close to the park, the old part of the city and a bus stop. Easy to reach and definitely a must for everyone who would like to find out more about the region.

Not the classic Italian museum but a relatively small exposition. The highlight has been the biblioteca Delfino, really impressive both for the charming architecture and the books hosted there. The Tiepolo frescos are marvellous, despite not being particularly passionate of XVIII century paintings myself. The museum is a little jewel close to the charming Udine city center.

At 6pm the museum was open to visitors and I entered enthusiastically: to my great surprise I saw some wonderful paintings on the walls belonging to the era of the patriarchs in Friuli, a marble tomb supported by statues which is a true masterpiece. There are also original sacred vestments with a broadsword. In the center there was once a baptistery with marble steps, the first Christians in fact were baptized by immersion like Jesus in the river. Now the ancient baptistery is no longer there, too bad! In its place a marble baptistery built in 2006. Comunque consigliatissimo

Chiesa parrocchiale di San Giacomo apostolo is a stunning church with an impressive Baroque style interior. The church, reminiscent of the town's own, is well-maintained by a respected parish priest who leads beautiful masses and is actively involved in the community. Its modern architecture blends classic spirituality, creating a peaceful atmosphere with sacred songs in the background. The beautiful bell tower adds to the serene ambiance of this dedicated church.

The only, if I’m not mistaken, contemporary museum in the area. The Paradoxa temporary exhibition that I’ve seen was very interesting. An open door to the Korean world, especially the north which is often unexplored. I also had the time to watch the lovely 2 floor permanent exposition which have paintings/drawings from big names Picasso to Chagall to De Chirico and less known ones (De Chirico’s brother). There’s loads so definitely take your time. I preferred the last floor than the middle one.

This very ancient church from 1378 stands out in the square, commissioned by the Furriers' brotherhood. The wooden ancona carved with seven statues of saints dates back to 1471. Externally, on the facade there is a small balcony with an altar which was used for outdoor masses without interfering with the activities that took place in the square. Worth seeing. It is located outside the center, but is also clearly visible from the castle due to its size. Its particularity on the outside lies in the 4 statues present at the entrance: in fact they represent 4 military orders and not saints and various others. It is very suggestive. It should contain the ossuary of the fallen of the Second World War. I'm giving 3 stars because I wasn't able to visit the inside: it was closed even though the signs indicated it was open. It was Boxing Day and I expected to find mass but instead it was sealed. Saint Antonio Abate is a charming church that captivates visitors with its beautifully arranged surroundings. Although it was closed during my visit, the allure of this sacred space is undeniable. San Quirino Parish is a vibrant community known for its cultural, spiritual, and musical events, including organ concerts. The church's modern architecture reflects the principles of the Second Vatican Council, using materials like concrete to symbolize faith's strength and brick to convey warmth. The parish is also praised for the dedication and love shown by its priests in guiding the community. Visitors appreciate the serene atmosphere of the crucifix as a beautiful spot for prayer and reflection within the parish grounds.

The description of the activity and life of the Trappist nuns of the community, which has expanded over time, suggests a sober lifestyle oriented towards prayer, meditation, peace and coexistence with all men, whatever religion they belong to. The nuns' model is truly edifying, the photographic panels and the summary video convey a feeling of serenity and allow us to understand the joy and courage of the nuns in a country troubled by conflicts of various types. A big thank you to the parish priest and the guide who illustrated the history and daily life of the nuns of the monastery (Original) La visita alla mostra dedicata al monastero siriano di Azer è stata per me una esperienza molto bella. (Translated by Google) Be sure to visit this church. I have seen many different religious institutions, but this church will remain in my heart forever. She is very beautiful, but her beauty is not the main thing. With large enough dimensions, the church feels cozy and calm. It gives a feeling of goodness and peace. Such things are very individual and difficult to explain. This is what is called the inner atmosphere. Visit and see for yourself!
