Churches & Cathedrals
St. Helen's Church is a historic landmark located in Abingdon, near the city center and by the river Thames. It is believed to have been built on the site of an Anglo-Saxon nunnery. The church features a mix of architectural styles from different periods, with parts dating back to the late 12th or early 13th century and later renovations in the 15th and 16th centuries.
This is quite a remarkable church. 5 aisles built during different phases and with a most welcoming modern layout for today's services. The church is surrounded by three almshouses also from different periods. So much history and interesting architecture in such a small space.
Andrea R — Google review
What a special place! Very grateful I could pop in for a few minutes before they closed at 3pm. The organist was showing visitors the instrument. I hope the congregation stays strong and active in their faith.
Matt B — Google review
The church is thought to occupy the site of the Anglo-Saxon Helenstowe Nunnery. The church spire is a landmark of the town. The earliest parts of the church are late 12th- or early 13th-century. Some of the windows are 14th-century, and the building was remodelled in the 15th and 16th centuries. The building was restored in 1869–73 to plans by the Gothic Revival architect Henry Woodyer. Of note within the church are the painted ceiling panels of the north aisle, dating from about 1390 and representing the Tree of Jesse. The church is a Grade I listed building. Certainly, here's a 5-star review for St. Helens Church in Abingdon. Stepping inside, we were immediately struck by the serene ambience and the rich historical significance that permeates the air. The stunning architecture and beautiful stained glass windows are a testament to its centuries-old heritage. The peacefulness within the church provides a perfect sanctuary for contemplation and reflection. The churchyard is well-maintained, adding to the overall charm of the surroundings. A memorial tablet depicts the family tree of William Lee (1545–1637), five times mayor of Abingdon, and his descendants. The memorial is referred to in Jerome K. Jerome's Three Men in a Boat. Around the churchyard are three sets of almshouses: Long Alley Almshouses built in 1446, Twitty's Almshouses of 1707 and Brick Alley Almshouses of 1718. The architectural historian Nikolaus Pevsner declared "No other churchyard anywhere has anything like it.
Dina S — Google review
It's a small church located by the river Thames and really close to the city center. The exterior architecture of the church is standard, but the interior is beautiful and different. What makes this church different is the way the pews are situated.
Prashant S — Google review
I absolutely adore the architecture of this church. It is STEEPED with history, and the organ is magnificent! The ambience is magical and calmed my soul, so glad I had the honour to visit.
Lucy E — Google review
Didn't go inside the church, but the surroding area is quite nice for a walk on a good day. The riverside and the Almshouse are good places around it to walk through.
Savio D — Google review
Nice local church with a spire and a graveyard. They allow you to have a look around inside if there’s no service or event on.

Lovely church. They run the best Stay and Play on Tuesdays from 10AM with homemade cakes and refreshments. The church is available for hire and rates are very good.

Very nice amazingly committed lovely people. Some lack of community feel/engagement/connection after the services, probably especially for those coming on their own. Very busy and noisy hall. Teaching can be quite heavy and lecture-like. Good Biblical information.
Loopy L — Google review
Sunflowers toddler group on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Is fantastic. Lovely atmosphere. Lots for the children to do. Yummy snack for adults and healthy snacks for children. But you can have any snack you want. The team and volunteers are lovely. During lockdown when we couldn't meet they were very supportive. Highly recommended this place.

St Mary Magdalene Church has a rich history, with the Great Abbey Church and other ecclesiastical buildings being demolished in 1538 during the Dissolution of the Monasteries. Interestingly, the domestic buildings survived due to their commercial value and were repurposed for various uses over the centuries, from corn mills to a brewery to slum dwellings.
A small friendly village church. The congregation is quite small but welcoming. The has been a long connection with armed forces and the local base. There is a car park next to the church in a field (opposite the pub). A very active churchwarden has the life of the church much to heart.

And it's even nicer now that me and my lover cleaned it ; vacuuming , fresh flowers and have a look at the cobweb less windows

Historically intrigant, wonderful landscapes, lovable cheese at local tavern.

Historical church next to Milton manor. Set in the quiet Oxfordshire village it’s a well maintained church. Many interesting points of architecture and monuments around the churchyard are significant points of interest for the visitor.

St Mary the Virgin Church is a place of historical significance and spiritual reflection. It holds the grave of Phillipa, wife of Geoffrey Chaucer, adding to its allure for history enthusiasts. Tucked away from the bustling main road, this charming church offers a serene atmosphere for visitors seeking solace and quiet contemplation. The church's emphasis on embracing the present while preserving traditions reflects a timeless message that resonates with people from all walks of life.
My history and beliefs started here. Life learning lessons created who I am today. This is why I try to let people focus on the here and now for our children's children's future of their rights to happiness. Enjoying their childhood while it's there.

Some of my ancestors married here in the 16th century. A very peaceful church with a lot of interesting history. Its a shame that a majority of the headstones in the graveyard are unreadable. The grounds are well kept though, lovely views from the top of the churchyard.

Lovely Church , very peaceful feeling inside . Not all Churches feel nice. This one is great. Very nice Graveyard, love wandering round old Church yards, brings you down to earth and makes you feel very humble .

Disappointing to see the "Our beautiful church is always open" sign on the outer door but the inner door locked.
