Anafonitria Monastery is a hidden gem on the northwest side of Zakynthos, offering a glimpse into the island's untouched villages and vineyards. Built in the 15th century, this Byzantine monastery remains unharmed by natural disasters and holds historical significance as the place where Saint Dionysios, the patron saint of Zakynthos, spent his final days as a monk.
Pretty monastery to view the grounds of. The plants are beautiful. Someone has taken great care to grow them, and it shows.

A peaceful place. An old monastery but still functioning for special occasions for the locals as our tour guide says. Taking picture is not allowed inside.

The Church of St Timothy and Mavra, located in Maherado, Zakynthos, is a significant 14th-century church with an impressive Venetian bell tower. Although it suffered heavy damage from a fire in 2005, efforts are underway to restore it. The church celebrates the memory of Agia Mavra on May 3rd. Visitors can admire the ornate wood-carved iconostasis that was recreated after the fire and appreciate the excellent bell tower.
Beautifully restored after it caught fire not quite complete yet but getting there, well worth a visit.

(Translated by Google) The route there is quite nice. The monastery has been restored for €800,000. However, the church is closed; you can walk around it, and there's a nice viewpoint in the garden, and that's about it. You'll have seen everything in 10 to 15 minutes, and then you can follow the same route back. (Translated by Google) Complete devotion to the feast of Saint Mavra and Timothy. The hagiographies, the icons and the statues are beautiful, a very special style, that of the Ionian Islands with influences from the West. Perched on Mount Skopos in the southeast of Zakynthos, Monastery Panagia Skopiotissa is a challenging yet rewarding climb, boasting a 15th-century church adorned with frescoes and an iconic Virgin Mary brought from Constantinople. The site's history dates back to the Temple of Artemis and offers stunning views of the sea and surrounding villages.
Another must-do hike on Zakynthos is the trail to the Skopiotissa Monastery. The entire route is beautiful, surrounded by nature, and once you reach the monastery, you can continue up to the mountain peak using a rope. From the top, you'll be rewarded with a stunning panoramic view over the whole island. It's definitely one of the places you have to see when visiting Zakynthos.
SudiPudi — Google review
Interesting historical place. If you go there by car DONT FOLLOW Google navigation. The road was not accessible for any type of vehicle due to rain damage. Instead going straight, turn left, just follow signs. About 1km before the monastery, see ruins of church with some wall paintings and beautiful views. You can also walk there about 4 - 5 km. Jusy before monastery there is a refreshment place. If you are fit you can hike (250m) from the gardens on the rock with 360° view. Free entrances.
P H — Google review
We were skeptical reading all the reviews regarding the road to get there. Luckily we didn't listen! Ok, it is a little off-road, but if you drive slowly and carefully, you can get to the top of the mountain without any issues with a standard car. We were greeted by this typical Greek lady. She tries to speak a little English, very charming. This lady opened the doors to the church. Around the church, you can walk around and enjoy a fantastic view of several parts of the island. We enjoyed our drinks and ice cream on the terrace under the trees. Follow the road signs of Skopos mountain. See photos. Free entrance. Just have something to drink. They will be very grateful
Eveline W — Google review
The monastery itself is not of great interest to look at. But the view from there is great. Definitely worth the journey. And there is a little cafe just before the monastery to stop off for coffee and drinks. But just to warn those attempting to get up here, you will need a 4 wheel drive. The road is steep and winding. You will struggle with a normal car.
K ( — Google review
Little monastery open to public for free on top of the high hill (as usual in Greek islands). There’s an amazing viewpoint (perhaps one of the prettiest) just a minute hike behind the monastery.
Vytautas M — Google review
The way up is quite dramatic by car, but it makes a nice hike and the views are spectacular when on top. The welcoming goats were a nice plus.
Federica F — Google review
Nice place, walked up there from Argassi. Lighten up some candles for those who passed on. Climbed on to the top of mnt Skoros. It was a very nice day to climb.
Harry B — Google review
Beautiful place, you can also climb the rock just behind the church and enjoy the view from up there. If you take the route from Laganas like we did, under any circumstances do not take a shortcut proposed by google maps, unless you want to climb a dried waterfall's almost vertical walls. Anyway this place is worth seeing;)

The Church of Agios Dionysios is a significant religious site in Zakynthos Town, housing the relics of the town's patron saint. Originally dating back to 1708, the church was reconstructed in 1954 after being razed by an earthquake. It stands as a symbol of resilience, having survived the devastating earthquake of 1953. The church is a popular attraction for worshippers and visitors alike, with its daily opening of the sarcophagus and procession on St.
I have never seen something like this. The Patron Saint Dionysios , is not dead , he is like fallen asleep. I touched his legs and are soft legs like he had died a few days ago. It is a true miracol, and after reading about his life, he is a true Saint and people are right with honoring him. And the church is beautiful an Orthodox masterpiece, even if is not so big. So peacefull was the Liturghia... Definetelly if you go to Zakynthos you should visit The Church.
Lucian — Google review
A very humbling experience. Dress appropriately and keep the noise level down. The Sunday service is great if you've never been and wear your Sunday best. Saint Dionysios is very important to Zakynthos.
Iceman — Google review
A beautiful, wonderful orthodox church that is DEFINITELY worth visiting. Im a catholic and truly fell in love with this place, it is so known for the saint Dionysios casket (forgive me, dont know the actual word)! Wish i knew it earlier. The church definitely catches your attention, and it is emotional to pray there, even just for a bit. I have no regrets, and the people taking care of the church are also very respectful and kind. The man working with the candles was really polite and was truly trying his best to help me out if i had a question, even taught me some stuff about the praying of the candles. It was beautiful, could stay there all day, you dont have to pray anything, just for the candles if you want to. I felt safe :).
Arrow H — Google review
A sanctuary with a story. The inside is amazing beautiful with a lot of shiny copper and gold. But the weirdest thing I experienced in this church that lots of people come in to kiss the feet of a long past and very dead ‘saint’. Of course it’s a cultural thing but this experience overshadowed the beauty of the church imo
Martijn H — Google review
Saint Dionysios Church is one of the most important landmarks in Zakynthos and a truly spiritual place to visit. The architecture is impressive, and the interior is beautifully decorated with icons and details that reflect the deep Orthodox tradition. The atmosphere inside is peaceful and inspiring, making it a wonderful place to spend a quiet moment of reflection. It is also the resting place of Saint Dionysios, the patron saint of the island, which adds to the significance of the church. A must-see when visiting Zakynthos, both for its religious importance and its cultural beauty.
Kostadin R — Google review
Beautiful Orthodox church decorated nearly fully from floor to ceiling. Nice heaven of calm to take a break from long walks on this beautiful island. Entrance is free and you can buy candles to light and make a wish.

Greek Orthodox church
Located on the west side of Zakynthos, approximately 7 km from Agios Leon, Church Agios Nikolaos of Molos is a historic Venetian building situated on Solomos Square. Surviving the severe earthquake and fire of 1953, this church has retained its original charm with its stone, single-aisled basilica. Inside, visitors can admire the simple yet beautiful Greek Orthodox iconography and imagery while observing people lighting candles.
The stone carved inscription above the church (in Greek), reads as follows: "Holy Church of Agios Nikolaos of Molos, Stavropegial, Built in 1560. It served as a parish church around 1583, while the Holy Church of the Patron Saint of Zakynthos, Agios Dionysios, was under construction." This highlights the historical importance of the church, noting that it functioned as a parish during the construction of the larger Church of Agios Dionysios, who is the patron saint of Zakynthos.
Goodkine — Google review
The church itself is beautiful and well worth seeing. My only point of criticism, which led to the poor rating, is a very unpleasant encounter with the warden. I was reading the English descriptions in the church when an older gentleman, the warden, came towards me shouting and repeatedly calling out "candle“. Although I signaled to him that I am not a Christian but have great respect for the place, he mumbled something in Greek and walked away. I couldn't understand his behavior and felt very uncomfortable. When leaving the church, I wanted to clarify what the problem was. However, he just kept shouting "candle." It was a very unpleasant experience and a shame for this beautiful church.
Momo — Google review
Quite a small church, and definitely not as conventional as other churches on the island. It is the oldest standing Venetian building in this square that survived the earthquake from the 1950's. Also, the lady inside gave us free candles to light as soon as we entered. You can also choose to donate money if you want.
Lucian M — Google review
The monument itself is a work of art. How it withstood time and weather is astonishing. The only reason i gave 3 stars is because when i went in and lit a candle for the loved ones saw the curator of the establishment take a bunch of recently lit candles and throw them to in the disposing bin. Not an act one dose in such a place or at least not when others are present. I know many will think me abject but i feel like in such a place one must show hi's best intentions not only the greedy side of one self!

The Monastery of Agios Georgios Krimnon, also known as St George Kremnon or Vrahon, is situated in the village of Volimes and was established by two monks during the 16th century. This monastic complex features a striking tower built in 1561 to safeguard against pirate invasions.
Quite place for a moment to rest and to enjoy the pureness of everything around us. Beautiful views, silence, nothing much, but it was the beauty of this place 💗

It is around 500 years old. Such a blessed place m. Was so happy that we visited it on our way to seeing the shipwreck view point. The Monk were very welcoming and took their time to tell us about the Monastery and how they spend their day between praying and doing some work. The Monk also showed us their mosaic workshop. It is definitely a must to visit. God bless our church and the people who serve the kingdom of God through it 🙏🏻

A bigger monastery, close to Shipwreck beach. There are monks living and working here, their workshop is amazing. The whole place is calm and clean, you can walk around, visit their church, rest at the courtyard or buy one of their makings. They are very nice, speaks English and not pushing you to buy anything, they are real monks. Worth a visit, there are enough parking places too, if you come by car.

Museum
The Byzantine Museum of Zakynthos, located in the heart of Zakynthos Town, showcases a stunning collection of religious icons, frescoes, and sculptures dating back to the 12th century. Housed in a beautifully restored building on the waterfront plaza, the museum features rescued artifacts from churches and monasteries following the devastating 1953 earthquake. Visitors can admire Byzantine icons carved into wood, 18th-century oil paintings, and a scale model depicting the town before the earthquake.
Small museum spread over two floors, focused on Byzantine art. The paintings are rescued from churches after the earthquake of 1953. It was €4 each for adults, kids were free and €2 for an OAP. Staff were friendly, spoke English and were able to answer questions. There aren't many facilities inside and it was very hot but the views from the first floor windows across the square were lovely. Most of the information about the paintings was in Greek but we just used Google Lens to translate.
Ruth K — Google review
A spacious museum with an impressive collection of mostly ecclesiastical items. The personnel are most kind and the the building is also interesting in itself. It is well worth the little time required to visit it.

A little pricey for a very small musseum. 10 euro/person. Go there if you are into ortodox church art.
Petre — Google review
Beautiful things, we’ll set out. Not much English translated blurb. No air conditioning. Not really for kids, unless your kids are into mediaeval church art? Although is fun to spot the dragons etc.
James H — Google review
Great museum with amazing pieces of art. Takes about 30 minutes to 1 hour to go through. For tourists, English information and text are not available unfortunately.
Diederik D — Google review
A small but well-kept museum, spread over two floors and entirely dedicated to sacred art, with both Catholic and Orthodox influences, mostly Byzantine. The collection is interesting for those who are passionate about this type of art, but it is quite monothematic: almost exclusively religious works. Personally, I found the ticket price (€10) a bit too high for what’s on offer, especially for visitors who are not specifically interested in sacred art. A lower admission fee would make it more accessible and appealing
Leon V — Google review
Beautiful frescos and paintings! Love how they preserved so much after the earthquake. I'm not able to give the museum more stars because I really wish they added more information in English.

Upon arriving in Kiliomeno, visitors are immediately captivated by the impressive Church of Archangels and St. Nicholas Vanato, along with its towering bell tower. These two structures stand apart, separated by a street, yet they complement each other beautifully. The bell tower boasts a square base and rises through four distinct levels; the third level features elegant arches while the topmost hexagonal section is adorned with intricate relief decorations that add to its charm.

Church of St. Nicholas Vanato is a unique Venetian-style church, the only one of its kind that has survived. Although it suffered damage in the 1953 earthquake, extensive restoration efforts have preserved this 17th-century marvel. The main structure showcases Renaissance architecture while the bell tower stands as a testament to Byzantine design.

The church situated by the harbor possesses a bell tower that bears resemblance to the bell tower of San Marco Church in Venice. This prominent landmark, standing at over 40 feet tall, is considered the symbol of the city. Zante Towns city center comprises Alexander Roma Street and 21st Maiou Street leading up to San Marco Square. From 3:00 p.m., this area is prohibited for vehicles. My spouse and I have frequented this establishment for dessert and coffee on multiple occasions.

The main course was chicken breast with mass potato and pasta with chicken. These foods not was bad but… the beverages was beer and home made limonade what was fine. The staffs was kind and friendly. The place atmosphere enjoyable

The island's long history dating back to prehistoric times has been influenced by various civilizations, resulting in a diverse cultural heritage reflected in its historic churches and landmarks. The tour provides a personalized touch with George, the guide, making guests feel welcome and at home while explaining everything about the trip.
We had an awesome experience. The team is very profesional and nice. You get history informations along the trip and you visit 2 beautiful places where you can swim and do snorkeling. We saw a turtle on the way back. The fishing experience is also amazing and the food made from the catch fish was delicious. You receive everything on this trip, a good caffe in the morning, some sandwiches between the swims and of course the main course with the catch fish. You also get nice wine made by the owner. Thank you very much for this amazing expeience and all the best to you. These memories will stay with us for our entire life.

A grade 10 experience. I recommend it anytime and would do it again. Jorgo (the captain) is extremely pleasant, has a pedagogical spirit and explains the history and geography of the area and the rest of the crew is nice, polite and kind. The food was excellent, basically various types of local salads and the fish we caught. I am grateful that my wife and I had such an experience.

The highlight of our visit to Zakynthos!! We booked directly with the website & were advised to schedule the trip early in our vacation since weather might prevent the boat from going out. Sure enough, Georgios proactively contacted us three days before our excursion to say the forecast wasn’t favorable. We were able to reschedule for a couple days later and had a wonderful time!! Georgios and the crew really care about the quality of the experience. The boat is exceptionally well maintained and the swimming stops we visited were spectacular!! They provide refreshments along the way and make a wonderful lunch of the freshest fish you can ask for! (with some vegetarian options too)

Went on the fishing trip with Zante Fishing Tours and we had an INCREDIBLE day!! The boat is a great size, plenty of seating for all and it is kept immaculately clean throughout the day! We started the day with coffee and pastries plus fresh orange juice and we set sail, heading South as the sun rose over Zante Town. 9 participants plus 3 crew in total so a lovely small group. The Captain, George, explained all about the type of fishing that we would be doing, explaining all about the fishing industry in Greece and how they are adapting for the modern era. He is such an interesting man and told us lots of stories along with his incredible knowledge - being a third generation fisherman in his family - he definitely knows his stuff. He told us the timings for the day and what the days plans were. We cast the nets and all had a go at doing that - which the crew made it look a lot easier than it actually was. Then we sailed to our first most beautiful and idyllic swim stop. We saw a beautiful sea turtle on the way, she popped her head up out of the water a few times and was such a magestic creature. The first swim stop could have been straight out of a paradise movie - it was simply stunning. Crystal clear waters and then freshly prepared sandwiches, fruit and drinks to refresh after the swim. Then we headed back to collect the fishing nets - again, a humbling experience to see how much work goes into fishing and to provide such beautiful food for the local hospitality and food industries. We all took turns in unhooking the fish from the nets - again, much harder than it looked!! And then we set sail for our second swim stop - where we went off to swim and bathe in the natural clay masks whilst the crew prepared a delicious feast including the fish that we had caught. We had the most amazing day. The crew went out of their way to make the day so memorable, they took lots of photos of the day at no extra charge and you definitely could not find a better excursion than Zante fishing tours. If you do one tour, definitely do this one!
Claire P — Google review
Wonderful experience!! The captain and his team were a lot of fun. They picked the best (private) locations to swim around the island. The snacks, drinks and lunch that were provided were excellent. We could help untangle the fish from the net which was a lot of fun. Great trip!!

My family and I went on this tour and what a fantastic experience it was! Right from the beginning George made us feel welcome. He took time to explain everything and made us feel at home. Mohammed was also really lovely and so skilled as a fisherman. The whole trip was organised extremely well. We all got involved in the fishing experience and the lunch made by George's mum was really delicious. George even provided wine which he had made himself...That is what you call the personal touch. I don't have anything negative to say about the trip at all. Book your tickets you will not regret it!

We had a blast. One of the most interesting experiences and it was definitely the highlight of our holidays. Captain Georgios was very friendly and knowledgeable and managed to give us a fun relaxing experience. We ate well, swam in remote beaches and had lots of fun trying to get the fish we caught out of the fishing net. Thanks Georgios and Mom, we will definitely do it again!

However, it was reconstructed in a basilica style while still preserving elements of local architecture. The church's courtyard features the "Old Building," a structure from the 15th century that now hosts an exhibition of folk paintings and used to be home to the village school.

The Greek Orthodox Church of Ascension is situated between two parallel main streets in the city, Terceti and Rome. The entrance to the temple can be found on Terceti Street. Inside the churchyard stands a statue of Antonius Martelaus, who once taught Falcon and Solomos. Similar to other churches on the island, the church follows a basilica style in its rituals. Due to limited space in the courtyard, it appears somewhat constrained amidst neighboring buildings.

Small, quite church. Open in mornings.

(Translated by Google) Beautiful church. The tower is especially beautiful in the evening because of the lighting. It is located in a pleasant shopping street in Zante. (Original) Mooie kerk.

(Translated by Google) It is located between two parallel central streets of the city, Terceti and Roma. The entrance to the temple is on Terceti. In its courtyard is a bust of Antonio Martelau, who was the teacher of Foscolos and Solomos. The architectural style of the church is, as in almost all the churches of the island, basilica. Because it doesn't have a large courtyard, it seems a bit squeezed between the neighboring buildings.

Here it gets lost in the pavilion and the signs of the shops that are standing on the road surface and on the sidewalks. Greek Orthodox church
The Greek Orthodox Church of Virgin Mary Faneromeni in Zakynthos, Greece, is like a precious jewelry box. Despite being devastated by the earthquake in 1953, it has been restored remarkably and now stands as the most exquisite church on the island. The interior decoration follows the Renaissance style of the Heptanese school of iconography and is truly astonishing.
Unfortunately the church was closed, so I was not able to visit the grounds. Really beautiful on the outside throughout the surroundings.

(Translated by Google) Like an expensive jewelry box. Hard to believe that after being leveled by the earthquake of 53, it was finally not only restored in an exemplary manner but became the most beautiful church of Zakynthos. The interior decoration in a Renaissance style, according to the type of the Heptanese school of iconography, is amazing. I had the great pleasure of meeting the great painter Yiannis Tsolakos who, with great persistence and effort, handed over to the island a great artistic legacy. The hour that passed without me realizing it talking to him was the absolute highlight of my trip (Original) Σαν ακριβή κοσμηματοθήκη.

(Translated by Google) Outside and inside beautiful!!! On the south side of the city of Zakynthos, in the district of Ammos, is the majestic church of Panagia Faneromeni, the most impressive and beautiful of the city's churches, a typical example of high artistic creation with strong influences of Renaissance art. With the great earthquake of 1953, the church was completely destroyed. Only the spire remained unscathed. It was rebuilt with the same materials and restored to its old form.

Greek Orthodox church
Perched atop a hill near the fortress and a charming café, Zoodochos Pigi Holy Church is an enchanting destination that beautifully showcases the Venetian architectural influence on Zakynthos. Unlike typical Greek Orthodox churches, its exterior stands out with distinct Venetian features, while inside, the altar dazzles in white and gold. Visitors often find themselves captivated by breathtaking views of Zakynthos town and the harbor from this vantage point. The area also offers free parking for convenience.
Bohali and the church on top of the mountain near Zakynthos offer one of the most picturesque and serene experiences on the island. Perched high above Zakynthos Town, Bohali provides a stunning panoramic view of the town, the sparkling blue waters, and the surrounding coastline. The narrow streets of the village are charming, with traditional Greek architecture and a relaxed atmosphere. It’s a lovely spot for a quiet walk, offering beautiful views at every turn, making it a great place for photographers and those looking to experience a more peaceful side of the island. At the top of the mountain, you’ll find a small, quaint church that adds to the area’s charm. The church, with its simple but beautiful architecture, offers a peaceful place to reflect. Visiting Bohali and the church is a wonderful experience, especially for those who enjoy scenic views, history, and a peaceful retreat. It’s a hidden gem of Zakynthos, offering beauty and tranquility away from the busier tourist spots.

A traditional Greek church at the top of the mountain. During our visit there was a wedding going on and then no opportunity to view it inside. After the wedding, unfortunately, the church was closed. There is another nice lookout point nearby and an old castle. Free parking in the area.

Wish I could learn more about this church's history. My yiayia was probably baptized in it. And we learned tonight that the House of Latas was the home of the bishop who served in the church two generations ago.
