Hagi Castle Town is a beautifully preserved heritage district in Japan, known for its Meiji-era houses that were once home to merchants. The area offers a glimpse into the past with former samurai residences and merchant houses lining the quiet streets. Established as a castle town in 1604, Hagi flourished under Mori Terumoto's rule and remains one of Japan's most historic cities.
Historical houses are giving this little town an idyllic ambience which invites you to stroll around and explore this place. Lots of pottery in nice historic buildings add even more charm.
Ralf B — Google review
A very tranquil ancient town perfect for leisurely walks and admiring the marks left by old times. We happened to encounter a beautiful sunset on the day we went there, with orange clouds filling the entire sky, making these alleyways even more tranquil and elegant... I hope to visit here again next time and stay a bit longer to enjoy the beautiful scenery.
ChungChung B — Google review
A town that is absolutely worth a visit if you are interested in the Japanese culture and history. It is actually a museum in real life.
Jeff H — Google review
Great it shows the culture and ethics of Japan
DIAMOND — Google review
It has a unique atmosphere but it's a wide area with mostly residential houses so there is very little to do. Easier to explore by bicycle than on foot probably.
P — Google review
Not worth a visit. Compare with other "Old town" with tea houses and snack shops. Absolutely waste of my time.
Thomas L — Google review
A sleepy quiet castle town. Not much to see but the atmosphere is great.

Nestled in the peaceful woods of Hagi, Tokoji Temple offers a delightful escape into nature, where the only sounds are the gentle calls of birds. This temple stands out with its striking Chinese-influenced architecture, featuring a vibrant red outer gate and an impressive wooden inner gate that beckons visitors to explore further. The main hall showcases traditional Chinese Zen design and houses a revered Buddha statue. However, what truly captivates is found beyond the main structures.
Probably one of the greatest places I have ever taken photos. The village and area can be so captivating when viewed from outside, but nothing comes close to experiencing it in person. The food, the people, the sightseeing locations, the history, etc.. Is all so real and immersive, It is truly a once in a lifetime experience. Japan, prior to the Meiji Restoration, was such an interesting And unique place In human history.

Motivated by a video released by Fujifilm, my wife and I traveled 2.5 hours from Okayama to Hagi City. One of the main purposes of the trip was to visit Tokoji Temple. The temple was in a quite original condition, with little painting, maintenance, refurbishment work done to it. However, it did deserve some of the work to preserve it for the future generations. The gardens also needed redesigning and upgrading to make them tidier and more beautuful. The graveyard area was awesome, unique, and impressive, making us feel it worthy to take the trip on such a cold, windy, rainy day.
Jeff H — Google review
Beautiful quiet temple a walk up from the Academy. 300yen entrance. There is a lantern-filled graveyard for old retainers at the rear.
Andrew B — Google review
Amazing temple! Old gates and main hall magnificent but be sure to visit the noble cemetery out the back - eerie atmosphere. 300 yen.

The Hagi Reverberatory Furnace is a significant industrial heritage site that dates back to the 1800s. It was originally constructed by the Hagi clan in 1856 for the production of Western-style cannons. The remains of this furnace, which include a 10.5m tall chimney made mostly of andesite, stand as a testament to Japan's efforts to strengthen coastal defenses during the late Edo period.

Norifumi S — Google review
It is an important part world heritage of modernization and industrialization of Japan... From here iron or steal industry march on...
Subasish — Google review
The first reverberatory furnace in Japan, constructed by The Saga clan. Construction began in 1850 based on a translation of Huguenin’s text. This place will be more beautiful in spring season. Its surrounded by sakura trees.
P A — Google review
It is a nice garden, with nice trees, and tree roots next to the steps up, but I was not excited to see an old chimney that is a copy of a copy of a British furnace, that did not work. When I stop there again (at the convenience store below for coffee on the way vack from Abu Road Station and pool, or Kyogahama surfing beach, both highly recommended) I will check to see if there is sea view which, like the roots, will interest me more than the old chimney.
Timothy T — Google review

Daisuke A — Google review
World heritage, worth learning
Janak D — Google review
The furnace is well preserved, but not too interesting in itself. What makes it worthwhile to visit is the whole story around it, how the feudal people of the area attempted first steps at industrialization with incomplete plans.
Maciej K — Google review
(Translated by Google) I went sightseeing on a public holiday to visit the Hagi Reverberatory Furnace, a World Heritage Site in Hagi! When I saw it in person, it was just as huge as rumored! It's a relic of a Western-style metal melting furnace, with only the chimney remaining. It stands on a small hill, and combined with its historical background, it left quite an impressive and impactful impression. When I think of it as a place symbolizing the trial and error of science and technology at the end of the Edo period, I'm deeply moved by the passion of the patriots of the time. You can take your time exploring the site for free (9:00am - 5:00pm), so it's a spot I especially recommend for history buffs!

Kikugahama Beach, located near the remains of Hagi Castle, offers a serene setting with its white sands and green pines. The area around the beach, particularly the Hamasaki area, is rich in history and features well-preserved merchant residences. This former port town provides a stark contrast to the samurai residences found in the Hagi Castle Town area. Visitors have described Kikugahama Beach as one of Japan's most beautiful and peaceful beaches.
Step over Kamakura, this is the most beautiful beach in Japan! I mean, of course that’s a matter of opinion, but this beach is stunning and far more peaceful than better-known beaches in Japan. Come here around sunset on a lightly cloudy day and listen to the waves rolling in. That’s how I spent the last day of 2020, and it was the best thing I did all year. I highly recommend this spot.
Nat F — Google review
We visited Kikugahama beach just after obon holiday in 2025. It was amazing experience to swim in this beach. The water is very clear. The beach is very popular. There are some shops beside the beach where one can easily buy drinks and swimming materials as well. We 3 from Bangladesh enjoyed a lot. Some high school students from Ogori talked with us, swim along with us and it was very memoriable day for us. The beach is very clear and beautiful. Recommended for summer swimming. #HAGI
Hassan R — Google review
We had a great time here in late July. The locals were very gracious and welcoming to us. Yamaguchi prefecture is hot in the summertime, and this awesome beach was a treat.
Bob T — Google review
Kikugahama beach is cool with few fishermen and swimmers. Water was crystal clear and some jellyfish were visible. The waves were pretty awesome and funny to play with. We went in early July and there were very few people on the beach. We stayed over in a nearby hotel and the sound of water waves the whole night was a marvelous experience to have.
Onalenna K — Google review
Not white sands. If you want white sands, drive to Tsunoshima Ohama Beach instead
Hal M — Google review
Beautiful sandy beach. Parking lot with public toilet facilities is just a minute away.

Nice beach overall. Not so crowded, safe for swimming, and quite clean (can be better tho). The only minus was there's no changing rooms in sight (atleast the free one, during peak seasons)

Hagi Castle Ruins, the former site of a 17th-century stronghold, offer visitors a glimpse into Japan's rich history. Although the original castle is no longer standing, the foundation and some stone walls remain intact. The surrounding town features well-preserved samurai residences and merchant quarters, including the Kikuya Residence, an Important Cultural Property showcasing Edo period architecture.
It's one of the 100 Fine Castles of Japan, and you can get a stamp at the entrance. The ruins are well-preserved and surrounded by lots of giant old trees. Inside there is also a small teahouse which seems to work only on weekdays. A quiet and peaceful place with almost no one around. You can enter for free if you have the Hagi Wonder Pass.
Sunny S — Google review
The restored redoubts and moat of ancient Hagi Castle. Some shops selling a wide selection of Hagi Yaki Pottery in front. A nice walk with a somewhat spooky inner sanctum shrine. Definitely worth a visit when in Hagi.
John D — Google review
A nice, quite secluded place. Very few locals around. A bicycle-riding postman, some fishermen fishing from the stone jetty on the beach. The streets and buildings seem frozen in time from the old feudal days. Most seem old and original. A must-go-to town for lovers of old Japan. The Hagi Castle ruins are just big rock walls. But pretty impressive even without the old castle. Very accessible by highway bus from Shin Yamaguchi station.
Shizuka M — Google review
Quite beautiful in spring and a large castle ground where people even come to practice some sports drills. Note that the castle has been destroyed and removed, leaving only the grounds. There's also a shrine built here. There is a small fee (about 300 yen) to enter.

The Hagi Meirin Gakusha Visitor Center is a historic school building that was originally constructed for upper-class children during the feudal era and has now been designated as a world heritage site. Visitors can take a tour of the building to see the study materials used by students in the past, providing an intriguing glimpse into historical education practices. The renovated wooden school building is open to the public, featuring both paid and free sections, along with tourist facilities and a café.
Well done to Hagi City with the restoration and renewal of this historic school house. The expansive school house has been completely rebuilt in the late 1800’s style with exquisite attention to detail and historic preservation. The building is a combination visitors center, museum, cafe, and rest center. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Information is available in multiple languages. The museum has two exhibits, Bakumatsu (end of Edo period) and World Cultural Heritage. The Bakumatsu museum is excellent with a unique collection of Edo period navigation and survey tools, toys, clocks, medical instruments, late Edo post Black Ship weapons and equipment. I particularly loved the collection of globes, compasses, and military helmets that look like a cross between samurai and British tommy. The kamon marks on the equipment are precious and without a doubt this is the largest collection of these relics in the world. The other museum is dedicated to Hagi City’s registration as one of Japan’s industrial revolution sites. It’s less artifacts and mostly panels. This would appeal to engineers and history buffs. Overall a great experience. Beautifully presented, meticulously maintained, and friendly.

Beautiful architecture building. Visited yesterday during Hinamatsuri, and the dolls were displayed. Only 2 buildings are open for public, the first one is free, but you have to pay about ¥300 to enter the second building.

Very interesting 'living' museum and must do if your in Hagi, the first building is free to enter and contains an information Center, the second building costs to enter so I didn't go but the first building had good info in English about the buildings history which is a part of the Hagi Castle history and local geology plus the car park is a good price to leave your car at and walk to the old samurai area and pottery shops.

Was here in 2006. The scenery is still as beautiful as my memory. The sea, mountains, padi fields, the windmill and the garden maze are just so picturesque. Nestled in the picturesque landscape of Yamaguchi Prefecture, Beppu Benten Pond is a stunning natural gem that captivates visitors with its serene beauty. This shallow pool boasts crystal-clear, blue-green waters enriched with calcium, creating an enchanting emerald hue. Surrounded by lush trees and charming stone bridges, it offers a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life.
" Emerald Green + Clean Clean Water " Beppu Benten Pond — a sacred blue gem near Akiyoshidai. When visiting Akiyoshidai, this spot is always recommended alongside it—and for good reason. The water is unbelievably clear, with a emerald green that looks surreal even without any filter. It’s no surprise that it’s been selected as one of Japan’s “Top 100 Famous Waters,” with a spring so pure, you can actually drink straight from it. Personally, whenever I visit Akiyoshidai, I make it a point to stop by Beppu Benten Pond as well. It’s a moment of quiet, sacred serenity—where I can sit with the stillness, take in the green/blue tranquility, and enjoy a cup of unbelievably clean, delicious spring water before heading home.

A cobalt blue pond, fresh trout, and limestone caves nearby to explore. Super pristine and clear water. You can see clearly to the pond's bottom, as though it were made of perfectly clear glass. Its waters are used for irrigation and drinking, and also for the nearby trout farm. There is a trout farm just next to the pond. I guest the house is the trout farm’s owner.
Junes T — Google review
Went on a weekday afternoon, and we had the place all to ourselves. Very nice and serene place. Sat by the pond for a few minutes and took pictures. Worth the extra 15min drive from Akiyoshido Cave if you have the time to spare. Bring bug spray!

This was a fun and unique experience. From the constant cool breeze that reminds you that you're not in Tokyo any more, to the crystal clear fresh spring water, which was very cold, to the beautifully taken care of fish farm. For a small fee you can rent a fishing pole, bait and catch the fish in the main pond. The best part, you can take it to the small restaurant and they will clean, prep and cook your catch. Now...the sunrise at the kids playground on the other hand...

The birthplace of Takasugi Shinsaku is a significant historical site in Japan, closely associated with the samurai leader's upbringing and early influences. Visitors can explore the grounds of Shoin Shrine, where they can attend lectures and learn about the birthplace of samurai Yoshida Shoin.
(Translated by Google) I visited the birthplace of Takasugi Shinsaku. Takasugi Shinsaku's family home is located in the castle town of Hagi. You can feel the roots of Takasugi Shinsaku, who acted like lightning from the Choshu domain during the turbulent end of the Edo period. One of his achievements is the formation of the Kiheitai. Apart from the conventional regular army, the Kiheitai was formed by gathering volunteers regardless of their rank, which was considered unusual at the time. With a desire to protect their country, they took action quickly and regardless of their rank. However, there is a danger of running wild with emotion, but perhaps it was because Takasugi Shinsaku himself had learned from Shoin that he was able to run through the turbulent end of the Edo period like lightning with volunteers... I visited his birthplace while fantasizing. "In a world without any interesting things, I am interested" is a haiku by Takasugi Shinsaku that I love!!

(Translated by Google) 2025/5/2 Birthplace of Takasugi Shinsaku Admission fee 100 yen. I used to hate Japanese history, but now that I'm a free man, I'm a little interested. We were told to refrain from talking because residents live here. The building is not open to the public because residents live there. Just look around the outside of the building without making any noise. It's moving to think about the beginning of the story of the Meiji Restoration by the sonno joi patriots at the end of the Edo period. Takasugi Shinsaku was born on September 27, 1839 (Tenpo 10). He founded various units such as Choshu samurai, sonno joi patriots, and the Kiheitai, and directed the Choshu domain toward the movement to overthrow the shogunate. Takasugi Shinsaku died of pulmonary tuberculosis while recuperating in Sakurayama, Shimonoseki City on May 17, 1867 (Keio 3), before the overthrow of the shogunate. He was only 27 years old when he died. Five months after Takasugi Shinsaku's death, the 15th shogun, Tokugawa Yoshinobu, returned power to the Imperial Court by "restoring political power to the Emperor," and politics shifted from the Edo Shogunate, which had lasted for 260 years, to the Imperial Court. It feels as though Choshu's dominance has been maintained since the Meiji Restoration, through the Meiji, Taisho, Showa, Heisei, and Reiwa eras. Its water is mixed with saltwater and fresh water so it is a pond but you can still see fish from the ocean. It is certified as Japanese Geo park. Former Residence of Ito Hirobumi, an important historical landmark in Japan, is renowned for its unassuming design and traditional thatched roof. Situated inconspicuously in a narrow residential area near Shoin Shrine and Shokasonjuku Academy, this residence holds significance as the early abode of Japan's first prime minister. Interestingly, it is believed that Hirobumi Ito himself attended classes at the nearby academy.
One of my favorite visits in Hagi, lovely Japanese House from one of the former Prime ministers of Japan. Our guide of the day was absolutely great, we got so many small anecdotes about the place, and he even took a sweet picture of me and my friend in the place were Hirobumi used to sit. Information mainly in Japanese but it's worth it even if you understand only a bit !

The house itself had not much to see, however the museum next door had lot of concise information about Hirobumi’s success story. I wish there were more panels and explanations in English therefore the 4 star.

(Translated by Google) [World Heritage Site "Sites of Japan's Meiji Industrial Revolution"] Ebisugahana Shipyard / Nationally Designated Historic Site (Written from the explanation and guide at the site) In 1853 (the year of Perry's arrival) during the late Edo period, the Shogunate's national defense and military strengthening measures allowed the construction of large ships to be lifted, and the Choshu clan began construction of a shipyard at the request of the Shogunate. By 1860 (the first year of the Meiji era was 1868), two Western-style warships, the Heishinmaru (Russian technology) and the Koushinmaru (Dutch technology), were built and launched here. The background to the heritage designation was that two different Western-style shipbuilding techniques were used during this period, and that, based on the above, it is the only site where remains can still be confirmed today. The information boards are faded and some parts are difficult to read, giving the impression that the historical value of the site is not being fully conveyed. However, it is moving to think that this is where modern shipbuilding in Japan began, and it is precisely because it is a quiet place that you can take your time to imagine what it was like back then. If the local government put more effort into maintenance and publicity, I think it would become a spot that conveys even more of its appeal. The Former Yukawa Family Residence, situated beside the Aibagawa River, served as a samurai dwelling during feudal times. It exemplifies the ingenuity of past generations who ingeniously channeled river water into their households for daily use. Fascinatingly, this system remained in operation until approximately 1992, even extending to kitchen and bathroom facilities.
(Translated by Google) Former Yukawa family residence. Since the city of Hagi is located on a delta, it was frequently flooded during heavy rains, so the Aiba River was created artificially. An elderly volunteer staff member explained to me that it took 27 years. It is used not only to prevent river flooding, but also for agriculture and transportation. This former Yukawa family residence still shows how people used the river to live their lives. Currently, the Aiba River is full of carp and feels peaceful. The cultural heritage facilities in Hagi City cost 100 yen, but since there are 9 of them, if you want to see them all, the 310 yen combined ticket is a better deal. Irrigation canals were drawn into the house, and back then people used this to do housework. The water in the canal was still crystal clear. It was around noon on a Saturday, but there was no one else around, and when I went out to the garden, the snow was falling and it was a nice atmosphere. The highlight of this old samurai residence is that water is drawn from the Aiba River into the mansion's garden, and the river also flows into the kitchen (Hatoba) inside the mansion, giving it a charming atmosphere. In the past, people used to wash vegetables etc. here. If you're inside the house, you don't have to get wet even in the rain. Also, I don't know if there have been carp for a long time, but sometimes carp that live outside come in. The inside of the house is spacious and calm. The garden seen from the house is nice. The garden is also well maintained. Also, there are many holes around the pond, which are actually crab nests. If you look closely, you can see a lot of crabs. I think they also caught and ate crabs. The explanations given by the volunteers were also thorough and easy to understand. The tour fee is 100 yen, but parking is free. Akiyoshidai is a stunning karst landscape in Japan, featuring rolling plateaus and limestone rocks that resemble sheep. The area boasts the Akiyoshido Cave, one of the country's most famous limestone caves, as well as the Beppu Benten Pond with its crystal-clear blue water.
One of the “Must-Go” place if you’re in Shimonoseki. Japan’s largest karst plateau, known for its dramatic limestone landscape and vast underground caves. Perfect spot for a scenic drive 🚘🏍️ There’s a cafe☕️ and an information center

been here today. the view is another level of gorgeousness yet the facilities are insufficient. neither food store nor staffs are available along the karst road so no one we can ask in case we meet trouble during our trip, especially if we are cycling. and the cave staff said that bringing food are not allowed. even at the camping ground you will not meet any foodstore or restaurant or cafe whatsoever. even if you stay at the camping ground food are not sold except you have reserved the previous day. i think this place has huge potential but unfortunately they have poor management.

It's deep in the mountains The road was bad and I was a little nervous, but when I arrived there was a building with materials on display and I was able to watch videos from that time for free. What was interesting was that when I went to the local ruins, there was a black line drawn on an acrylic board to show the shape of the building at the time, where I could take pictures with my camera. It's interesting to see how the silhouette of the building and the ruins overlap when you look through the camera and align a part (corner) of the ruins. Unrinji, also known as the Cat Temple, is a unique and charming destination located off the beaten path. Despite its name, live cats are not the main attraction here; instead, visitors will find an array of wooden and stone cat sculptures throughout the temple grounds. The owner is known for being friendly and welcoming to guests, providing insights into the temple's origins in English.
Such a Wholesome and Fun Experience! When we arrived, we were greeted by a very friendly black cat who absolutely loved being petted—such a sweet little guy! Outside, there were many beautiful wooden cat sculptures, and it was so much fun to explore and discover all the hidden figurines scattered around the area. As soon as you step inside, you're given these super cute cat paw slippers! I absolutely loved the black ones and would really like to get a pair for myself, but I haven’t been able to find them online. Does anyone know where I can get them? Inside, there’s a great selection of cat-themed souvenirs and charms. There are multiple rooms too—one of them is a shrine, and another is filled with all kinds of cat statues where you can take photos with them! There were also some beautifully crafted wooden cat masks lying around. We weren’t sure if we were allowed to wear them, but they were really cool to look at. We also got a tasty treat from the host, which was such a nice touch. Overall, this was a lovely experience and I’m really glad we made time to visit!

Nestled in the charming Hamasaki district beneath Hagi Castle, Sumiyoshi Shrine is a serene haven dedicated to the deity of maritime safety. Established in 1658 after being relocated from Sakai, Osaka, this shrine boasts a rich history tied to its coastal location between the Sea of Japan and Matsumoto River. Once a bustling port town during the Taisho and early Showa periods, it thrived as a hub for Kitamae-bune shipping vessels and summer oranges.

The flowering period for camellias is from early December to late March. The day I visited was in late December, so it wasn't in full bloom, but I was able to see glimpses of it blooming. I like visiting wild plants that bloom vigorously in the area, and this was the most wonderful spot! The thicket camellia grows in clusters in brackish waters where seawater and freshwater meet and the terrain is made up of lava created by volcanic eruptions. I think it is a sightseeing spot comparable to the mangroves that grow thickly in Okinawa's ocean waters. The soil and lava contain salty seawater, which is a harsh environment for plants, but if they adapt to it, it becomes a paradise and forms a clump forest! Feel the romance! The flower language of camellia is "modest kindness" A flower that blooms during the harsh winter season. It's wonderful! There were many Hagiyaki items at the store that you could buy as souvenirs, ranging from affordable items to items that cost tens of thousands of yen. I bought a teacup for 1000 yen and a mug for 850 yen from among the slightly different items. I’m looking forward to using it! I will definitely go again when I come to Hagi!! Aibagawa Waterway, located in Hagi, offers a serene and less crowded experience compared to the typical tourist spots. The east side of the river features small samurai residences with stone bridges adding to the picturesque scenery. Visitors can explore three sites along the river using a 1-day Hagi City Cultural Property Facility Pass. The area boasts a mix of residential areas and old mansions, creating a tranquil atmosphere complemented by carp swimming in the stream.

I thought that I would like to give something back by expressing my feelings in some way, so I suddenly decided to give Hagi ware related to my roots in Hagi. After that, I received a polite email from the store representative with the item I had purchased attached. It's easy to shop on Amazon and Rakuten these days, but what is it like to buy delicate items like pottery online? I felt so much consideration that all my doubts were blown away. Of course, the actual product (the inside cannot be opened as it is a gift) will be carefully packaged and transported with care, so unless there is something special, I think it will arrive without any cost. Mount Shizukiyama, once the site of Shizuki Castle, offers a fascinating glimpse into Japan's feudal past. Although the castle was dismantled in 1874 after years of abandonment, remnants like its stone walls and moat still stand proudly today. When I read the guide that it is a flatland castle consisting of the main castle, the second castle, the third castle, and the "tsumemaru" on the mountaintop, I couldn't help but climb it because I came to see the castle. The fact that it is 143m high and takes 20 to 30 minutes to climb is also a good reason (because it is unlikely that anyone will come here often). Even though it was just before the end of the rainy season, it was a sunny day today, and it was quite hard to climb the mountain path, which was wet from last night's rain, while chasing mosquitoes. It may be more comfortable to climb during the cherry blossom season or in early autumn. It was written that there was no observation deck, but the view was good. Although the temperature was about that of a summer day, it was incomparably hotter than similar playground equipment at other parks. Please be really careful 🙇 (Original)

(Translated by Google) I was looking for somewhere to play on my way back from the Hagi Festival (8/3) and found this place❗ I came here for the first time with my grandchildren who are 3 and 5 years old. Although the location is a little out of the way, there are signs so it's easy to understand, even for first-timers. There was a lot of play equipment that looked like vegetables, and people were having fun playing with it. (It was just so hot that I got a burn on my butt when I went down the slide😢) In addition to the play equipment, there was a rest area with a roof. As I watched my grandson having fun while cooling off in the shade, I thought I was glad I came. There was a building that looked like a gymnasium and a baseball field nearby❗The parking lot is spacious.

A large one called Natsumikan Land? It is also a place where families can enjoy themselves when the weather is nice. (Translated by Google) She took great care of my children when they were small. This is Renessa Nagato's slide. There are vending machines at the stadium right next to it, and parking is free, so it's a great place for families with children. If I had to be greedy, it would be great if there was a sunshade on the sitting area.
