Hirado Castle, located in Hirado City, Nagasaki Prefecture, is a restored 18th-century hilltop castle offering panoramic views of the Hirado Strait. The castle was originally built in 1599 by Shigenobu Matsuura, a powerful feudal lord.
Only open from 8:30 am to 5 pm, my visit was short lived as I arrived 30 minutes prior. The grounds are vast and only little ground was covered, but from my experience it was a wondrous experience getting to see the beautiful architecture of the walls that barricade around the castle itself. There is a tour offered that provides a rich history background but is an optional offer through the main castle, which I was not able to see myself in this trip. So much was left unseen so another visit seems to be in order for a more riveting experience.

Definitely a must see if you are in the area or within driving distance. This castle is small but very interactive and keeps you entertained. There are games and you can learn about the history as well. On the very top floor of the castle they offer a photograph service that is done via your phone through an app. That was a big plus. I would recommend parking in the shrine area as it is easier to access the castle and this way you can see the shrine as well which is pretty nice and a good size.

Beautiful, historic place to visit. We went on a Saturday and it was not very busy. Lots of walking to do around the area where the castle is located.
Cigi L — Google review
Authentic entrance... I thought it was abandoned when we started into the property grounds. Overgrown foliage and the sound of crickets or similar, I felt like I was in an old Indiana Jones movie. Once by the castle, the outside structure was a replica of the original, but the inside was completely modernized and more like a museum. The view from the top was awesome though. Not a fan of the many spiders, but the wildlife around was their territory!!
Ellie C — Google review
You can walk around the castle grounds and explore. There is no entrance fee except for the main tower where you can get a good location to view the vicinity. There are other viewing spots around the castle as well though. There’s also a shrine within the castle grounds. Nice to visit when in Hirado.
Bernadette G — Google review
I went out of my way to see Hirado Castle and don’t regret it! Entry was ¥520, and it’s worth it, for the fantastic tower view and small museum. Going up in the tower you’ll get a great view of the city of Hirado, Hirado Bridge, and the ocean. The castle complex is also really cool. There’s some replica buildings, a small gift shop, and right there in one small area. If you’re English speaking- be aware that nearly all of the museum is in Japanese. It’s a great museum though and is worth checking out if you’re willing to use GoogleLens. Lastly, bring cash. The gift shop only accepts cash payments and the ticket machine in the tower only accepts cash.

1700 Historic Castle of the Matsura clan. Large area to explore and opportunities to take awesome photos of the castle, city and bay area. I had fun wrestling in the sumo area. Free access but 500 yen to go inside the museum and top view area.
Pedro C — Google review
I went to Hirado Castle on a fairly overcast day, but it was still fantastic. The inside of the castle has been made into an interactive museum. You can do a quiz and write kanji on a projector screen. It was really fun. Just be warned that you will probably need a car.

Located in Hirados Kagamigawacho district, the St. Francis Xavier Memorial Church offers stunning views of neighboring temples and the surrounding town. The church is named after the first Jesuit missionary to come to Japan and stands as a testament to the history of Christianity in the region. Despite being unable to enter at this time, visitors can admire its beautiful architecture from outside and peek through two windows for a glimpse of its interior.
Beautiful historical Catholic Church devoted to Francisco Xavier. Gorgeous building exterior and beautiful interior. A must visit for Catholic believers and tourism.

159 steps up to reach the church. The outside is nice but the inside is quite small.
Christa D — Google review
Must place to visit as the historical site in Hirado. Fact that this Buddhist temple assisted in hiding Christians during their persecution in the Edo and early Meiji era is less known.

Beautiful view of the Hirado castle and the ocean. The church is rather on the small side. Nothing really there to see.

The Hirado Dutch Trading Post, located in a remote area, holds historical significance as one of the first western-style buildings in Japan. The site features remains of a Dutch stone wall, steps, a well, and a wharf. Additionally, it is home to the original 1639 Dutch trading house which is being reconstructed as a tourist attraction.
A good place to learn how important Hirado in the past, with a huge emphasis of the Dutch (who established a trading post here). It makes us enjoy the walk within the town even more as we can imagine how Hirado was back then & appreciate the town management for/those involved in preserving the area. We love the interactive globe and animation video of Jan’s life.

What a beautiful building and little museum. 310 yen entrance fee. Could be more English but use your translator and see the brochures attached.
Justin D — Google review
It was interesting to learn the beginning of Dutch trading in Hirado before moving to the Dutch village in Deijima. it's a small clean museum but super easy to interpret the displays.
Frances — Google review
A reconstructed Dutch warehouse from 1639. The original was destroyed only a year later as the anno 1639 marker was deemed too Christian. The museum features a lot of cool artifacts, including a suit of European medieval armor, a beautiful imported Indian chair shown to be the same model as that acquired by the Matsura clan. I enjoyed the interactive globe tool that shows the development of the East India Company over time, its colonies and trade posts, ship routes with cargo info; it was my favorite part of the museum. Unfortunately, there is only partial information in English.
Kyle W — Google review
The tour inside will take about 15 minutes. It is very interesting, they show what kind of spices were traded and the trade agreement and other items. However, if you are not in the close to this area, I would not say it is worth it traveling this far (takes about 4 hours to get here from Nagasaki by bus).
Ying Z — Google review
Back in the early decades of the Tokugawa shogunate, Roman Catholicism had established itself in Japan's western provinces (Nagasaki, previously a remote fishing village, was de facto founded by the Jesuits in the early 1570s), and was making notable inroads further east in Kansai, too. The first Tokugawa, Ieyasu, averse to the Portuguese and Spanish missionaries, nevertheless maintained cordial relations with the Lutheran Dutch and Protestant English - on the understanding that they would stay in their lane. Ieyasu's son, Hidetada, and grandson, Iemitsu, had none of the old man's sentiment towards these foreign interlopers, regardless of denomination, and by 1638 foreigners, with their spouses and children, were being driven to Batavia (Jakarta) and elsewhere. To the building in review; it is a replica of a Dutch factory that was demolished, in the early 1640s in accordance with Iemitsu's "locked country" policy. Around that time the Dutch were shipped out to Dejima, Nagasaki, where they were, to all intents and purposes, incarcerated for almost 250 years. The building itself is pleasant enough and its museum contains a few artifacts of note; excavated items and those dredged out of the harbour. Here you can learn a very superficial history of the Dutch in Hirado. Why do I give this only three stars? In my opinion, the museum represents a missed opportunity. In 1613, four years after the Dutch, until bankruptcy a mere ten years later, the English established a trading post lead by cape (head) factor Richard Cocks, and William "Miura Anjin" Adams. The ensuing Anglo-Dutch rivalry, endured by the hapless Cocks and instigated by his Dutch counterpart Jacques Spex, is worthy of a Hollywood trilogy. These capers, a sort of John Le Carre meets Errol Flynn meets Jack Sparrow, as seen through the eyes of a merchant whose bookkeeping was frequently defeated by his own ledger, are noteworthy contributions to the history of Hirado, and yet this narrative is curiously omitted from the museum. Fortunately for us, Richard Cocks left behind his diary and a collection of letters to read (they are freely available on the internet). So, by all means visit and get your snaps for social media. Then go and read the back story to the Dutch and English traders in Hirado. Trust me, the day-to-day life of a commodities merchant living in early Edo Japan is not as dull as it might sound!
Paul B — Google review
It was quite small and not too many things were displayed with a 300yen change. But the lady staff there was really nice. Tho with not a lot of things, the whole displacement and the exhibition were put together quite nicely. Note: they do not have parking space in front of the building.
Lucinda L — Google review
Located in a remote area, the Hirado Dutch Trading Post houses a few pieces of history prior to the Dutch being located in Dejima. It's about a 3-4 hour bus ride from Nagasaki via Sasebo. The entire museum can be visited within half an hour. Not really worth the entire day sitting in a bus, but still interesting to visit once in my lifetime.

Nestled in the scenic Hirado area, the Matsūra Historical Museum is a treasure trove of cultural heritage. Originally built in 1893 as Tsurugamine Villa by the 37th Lord of Hirado, this stunning structure and its gardens are now recognized as a Prefectural Cultural Property. The museum grounds have been under the stewardship of the Matsura clan since Japan's Kamakura period, making it a significant historical site.
Small and intimate experience. We'll worth a visit if you are in the area. Loved the Shogun Trail scroll. It was amazing and literally the same journey we made with Explore Tours out of the UK. Such a shame they didn't have a snap version to buy.... I would have totally bought that.

Recommending if you are visiting Hirado. The nearby building is also now a restaurant. We had lunch there which costs only 1,280 JPY for a set/person. The fish sashimi is fresh, hamburg is superb.

Nice glimpse into the history of Hirado. Clean and organised museum with a lot of English signs(use google to help with Japanese only ones). Kind staff also!! Don’t be shy about just walking in. English is rare and it’s a quiet town. Oh, tickets can be bought as a package with the Dutch trading post when you visit there! (Cheap!!)

Hirado in Nagasaki is an amazing place with a really interesting history. Find out more about the Matsura Clan, who ruled over the Hirado region. There's even a tea house where you can enjoy a samurai style tea ceremony and traditional Hirado sweets.

Tabira Catholic Church is one of the many churches on Hirado Island, built after the Meiji Restoration in 1868 when the ban on Christianity was lifted. The church's beautiful brick exterior showcases a blend of Japanese and Western architectural styles. It has a rich history dating back to the time when Christianity spread in Japan, and it maintains its significance as a place of worship.
It's a special brick church with very artful looking from all side. I only stay at the outside as there were some events going on in the church. Please keep in mind this is a church, not a tourist building. If you ever visit here, please respect the church's rules and don't go inside unless you're praying or invited to. Look carefully at the roof and you will see some Japanese architecture details mixed with a western-style building.

Famous catholic church in nagasaki. Its our 2nd visit here. 1st time we went, we couldn’t get inside because something was being repaired. Not allowed taking picture inside the church. Sacred place🙏😊

The external structure of the church is beautiful. It shows the age of the church. I heard the stained glass windows are beautiful. Sadly, we couldn't go inside because the church is scheduled for rennovation. Giving 4 stars so that I can change this to 5 stars when I do get to see the beauty inside.

The Hirado Christian Museum offers a fascinating glimpse into the history of Hidden Christians in Japan, showcasing artifacts and materials that deepen your understanding of this unique cultural heritage. Nestled on land that once housed an actual village, the museum is a poignant reminder of the past. Visitors can also explore nearby attractions like Ushiwaki Forest and Neshi-no-hama Beach, known for its stunning beauty—perfect for summer outings.

(Translated by Google) A facility where you can learn about Hidden Christians in Hirado. It was a small exhibit, but I learned a lot from the things I didn't know. I am surprised that there are still people who do not convert to Catholicism and continue to follow the teachings of their ancestors even though the need to go into hiding became obsolete in the Meiji era. The staff was kind and gave us advice on sightseeing in Hirado and the time required. Thank you for your help.

(Translated by Google) It's been a while since I visited, but just like last time, the receptionist unlocked the door and turned on the lights. Although the building is small, it is filled with a variety of things, and as you look at each one, you will get a good understanding of the Christians in this area. There is an excavation site, Ushiwaki Forest, right next to the museum, so please take a look at it as well.

(Translated by Google) It's in a pretty niche area. The entrance fee is 200 yen, so it's very cheap, but there are very few materials. For information on Kakure Kirishitan, I recommend the Ikitsuki Island Museum. Many of the exhibits were only in Hangul. Photography is not allowed inside the museum.
Saku S — Google review
(Translated by Google) It's a very easy to understand exhibition. The video is also very easy to understand. It's just that outsiders call them hidden Christians. Christians simply believed in God and prayed. It was a museum where you could really understand how people prayed like this while living a Buddhist lifestyle. You can also buy souvenirs such as necklaces with motifs of flowers that only bloom here. Even though Catholics came eagerly to recruit them, many people continued to pray on their own. I also like your stance that you don't have to belong to any particular place, as long as you believe in God. I would like people to be free of religion, but I am glad that Japan was not under the strong influence of Catholicism. Although I am not a Christian, I think it is a wonderful museum where you can see real history with your own eyes, as there are many exhibits that are not replicas. Although it is a small museum compared to the Atomic Bomb Museum in Nagasaki City, which has fewer exhibits, it is worth going to see a lot of things, including a statue of Mary from when she lived there. There was also printed material that was easy to understand, which was great. There are many pamphlets that can only be obtained here.

I was a little surprised to learn that here in Hirado (or more accurately, Neshishi), a faith called Hidden Kirishitan was formed during the era of oppression, and has been passed down in a unique form to this day. This means that they do not go to church, but rather create their own community. Even though there is no longer a need to hide, there are people who continue their faith as hidden Christians. This museum is interesting and makes you want to know a little more about it. Bridge
Ikitsuki Bridge is a must-see attraction that connects Hirado and Ikitsuki Island. The bridge offers stunning views of the coastline and an observation deck nearby provides exceptional panoramic vistas. Visitors can also explore the Ikitsuki Island Museum, which showcases the region's whaling industry dating back to the Edo Period and features a permanent exhibit dedicated to Christians who practiced their religion in secret.
The Ikitsuki Ohashi Bridge, the world's longest truss bridge, spans 400 meters and is a marvel of engineering built in 1991. Designed to withstand wind speeds of up to 50 km/h and tidal currents of 11 km/h, the truss design was selected for its strength, stability, and cost-effectiveness, connecting Ikitsuki Island with Hirado of Kyushu. In Baltimore, Maryland, the Francis Scott Key Bridge, with a 366-meter span, was the third longest truss bridge until it was tragically destroyed in 2024 by a container ship accident. Beneath the Ikitsuki Ohashi Bridge, beautiful Stabit blocks are strategically placed for coastal protection, forming mesmerizing patterns and dissipating wave energy to prevent erosion. The blue color of the bridge harmonizes beautifully with the sky and ocean, creating a picturesque view. The Ikitsuki Strait has a rich maritime history. Since 14,000 BCE, these waters have been bustling with fishing activities. By the 16th century, the narrow strait became a whaling hub, attracting whalers from across Japan. Hirado was Japan's first city to open to foreign trade, welcoming merchants from the Netherlands and Portugal. This openness led to significant cultural exchanges, including the introduction of Christianity. As persecution began, many Christians found refuge on Ikitsuki Island.

Yamada Catholic Church is one of several churches on Hirado Island, all built after the Meiji Restoration of 1868 when the ban on Christianity was lifted. The church, located in the back of a village, exudes beauty and dignity despite its small size. Built in the Taisho era, it has historical roots connected to the hidden Christians of Amakusa. While visitors may not be able to enter the church, its striking presence is worth admiring from outside.
Divinely inspired. Ask the caretakers about the story behind the butterfly wings that make up the wall panels depicting the 7 sacraments.

Kawachi Toge Pass offers a picturesque drive with an overlook where travelers can take a break and enjoy the stunning views of grassy hills reminiscent of Switzerland. The area is also home to monuments celebrating the life of Tei Seiko, a half-Japanese, half-Chinese admiral, and hosts a festival dedicated to him in July. Additionally, it is known for being a popular filming location for car commercials and offers magnificent natural landscapes.

Saiwai-bashi, an Important Cultural Asset of Japan, is a stunning arch bridge that gracefully spans the Kagamigawa River in Hirado City. Originally constructed as a wooden bridge in 1669, it was later rebuilt in stone by 1702 using techniques inspired by Dutch traders—hence its nickname 'Dutch Bridge.' This elegant structure not only serves as a picturesque crossing but also offers visitors a glimpse into history with its well-preserved appearance despite being over three centuries old.

(Translated by Google) Saiwai Bridge. This is a very cool stone bridge that has been designated as a nationally designated important tangible cultural property. Its history is very interesting. The following is from the Hirado City website. It is said that before a bridge was built in this area, the only way to get to and from the castle was by boat or by taking a long detour over land, which was extremely inconvenient. Therefore, in 1669, a wooden bridge was built by Shigenobu (Tensho), the 29th head of the Matsuura family. The name given to it at this time is said to be Yukihashi. However, as it had collapsed due to use over time, a stronger bridge was desired, and in 1702, a single arch stone bridge was completed by local stonemasons at the behest of the 30th head of the Matsuura family (Yuka). It is said that a carpenter named Buzen learned this bridge-building technique while working on the construction of a Dutch trading post, and passed it on to local masons. For this reason, it is also called the Dutch Bridge. Furthermore, it is said that Hoonji Bridge, which remains in Konyamachi, was built as a prototype before this bridge was built. The bridge, which was made of strong stone, began to show signs of wear and tear after years of use, and repairs were carried out over three years starting in 1980, and are still in use today.

However, approaching from Hirado Castle, I couldn't find it, as it was on the other side of City Hall. There was no place to park and check, so I ended up parking at the Hirado Exchange Square Parking Lot and walking a short distance. Apparently, it got its nickname because it was built using the same stonework techniques as the Hirado Dutch Trading Post, which is located on the opposite side of the bridge from the Hirado Exchange Square Parking Lot. It's also nice that they didn't give it a simpler name like Meganebashi (Spectacles Bridge) and named it "Haiwai" (Fortunate) Bridge, since it resolved a long-standing inconvenience. Incidentally, the Hirado Exchange Square Parking Lot was free for two hours, which was convenient for sightseeing in Hirado, even though it wasn't on a slope. Hirado City Ikitsuki-jima no Yakata Museum is a must-visit attraction that offers insights into the region's whaling industry dating back to the Edo Period. The museum also features exhibits dedicated to the 'Hidden Christian' culture of the islands, showcasing a wooden chapel, stained-glass windows, and various artifacts. Visitors can explore these themes while admiring a preserved whale in formalin and experiencing firsthand the eerie yet intriguing atmosphere of the Christian exhibition room.
A nice little museum about the island's history which was mostly about whaling and fishing. It is also a good parking lot to access the beach.

(Translated by Google) I learned a lot from the exhibits and explanations about the history of whaling in Hirado and hidden Christians. It seems that whaling has been practiced since ancient times, and there are easy-to-understand explanations of old whaling methods and how whales were used. I would especially recommend this museum to anyone interested in hidden Christians. The persecution of Christians and the people who continued to practice their faith in hiding are explained in detail and displayed. It's a good idea to gain some knowledge at the museum before visiting the sites associated with them. The museum is wonderful, but Ikitsuki Island itself is a lovely island. It's definitely worth making the effort to visit. I had mixed opinions about it based on word of mouth, but I visited because I wanted to see the hidden Christian exhibit. The 1st floor has exhibits related to whaling, and the 2nd floor exhibits information about rural areas in Hirado. Beyond that, there is an exhibition of hidden Christians. Although I had learned about it from textbooks, I was able to see how the lives of those days were recreated, and I was able to see the missionary work of the hidden Christians during the era of oppression. The demon realm exhibit and Japanese-made ``Omaburi'' were also good. There is also an exhibition on fisheries in a separate volume, which was more fulfilling than I expected. Catholic church
Kigatsu Catholic Church is one of the many churches on Hirado Island, all built after the Meiji Restoration in 1868 when the ban on Christianity was lifted. The church has a simple exterior resembling a warehouse or barn, yet it exudes a mysterious charm that reflects the strength of faith. Despite its small size, this wooden church nestled in the mountains leaves a deep impression and offers a relaxing and sacred atmosphere.

At the end of March, there was construction going on and the light vans of contractors were parked freely. As a result, there was only one space left, but when they noticed it, the light van was swiftly moved to the corner. There may be fewer visitors than expected considering it is a designated church. If you drive from Himosashi Church, you can easily get there by turning left three times. As you get closer to the church, the road suddenly becomes narrower. Care must be taken as the width is not suitable for separation. On my way home, I passed another car at a place where the road widened. However, there is only one. I was surprised that the locals had no hesitation in entering the narrow road, perhaps because they were used to it. In another week, the cherry blossoms will probably be in full bloom. Catholic church
Nestled on Hirado Island, the Furue Catholic Church stands as a testament to Japan's rich religious history. Constructed after the Meiji Restoration of 1868, it is part of a collection of churches that emerged following the lifting of Christianity bans in 1873. While visiting this serene site, you may find it challenging to locate due to its obscure address and limited guidance from Google Maps. Unfortunately, during my visit, I encountered an empty church without any priests or congregants present.
(Translated by Google) Perhaps because it was a traveling church, neither the priest nor the believers were present, so I was unable to go inside. The reason why the directions are so difficult to understand is because the street address is unknown and, unusually, Google Maps does not specify the location. I somehow missed the last right turn sign when I went there. There is a parking space in front of the church, making it easy to turn around. However, the downhill slope in front of the church requires caution if you don't have a light or small car, as there is a risk of your wheels falling off. If you are forming a pilgrim group, you cannot use a microbus. In addition to passing through, temporary parking spaces are likely to be located quite far away.

The Statue of Aiko Nakayama pays tribute to a remarkable figure in Japanese history. Born as the 11th daughter of Matsura Kiyoshi, who was the 34th head of the Matsura clan, Aiko's lineage is significant as she became the grandmother of Emperor Meiji. This connection highlights the deep-rooted ties between her family and Japan's Imperial Family, showcasing a rich heritage that intertwines nobility and tradition.

Tabira Park is a fantastic location for a picnic with an exquisite vista of the bridge. It also boasts tennis courts, children's playgrounds, and baseball fields. Visitors can find restrooms and free parking facilities on-site. The park features small trails with moderate elevation, but they are not obligatory to explore. Although the park tends to be bustling with locals, everyone is friendly and hospitable.
This a nice area to relax by the Harido Bridge. There is a kids play ground and clean beach area. Plenty of areas to walk around or have a picnic at. There is plenty of parking and clean restrooms.

Small trails with a good amount of hills, but not required. Gets very busy with locals, but all are friendly and welcoming. Not many garbage cans for garbage if you do picnic so make sure to bring your own garbage bags.

Did not see anything much else that can be done at the park, but also we only actually came for the view of the bridge and to take photos of it. There’s a pretty wise parking lot. There are trees/ shade. It seems that the main attraction really is to be able to take photos of the Hirado bridge.
Bernadette G — Google review
There is a lawn park about 500m wide when you walk from the toilet to the sea. There are athletics like monuments and pictures. Above all, children were very pleased with the Tarzan rope. Besides, there were no people to use it, so it was a place where you could use it as much as you want. There was also a water supply for sand from the beach. There are about 10 pine trees, so it seems to be a good place to rest in the shade.
