Lighthouses
Kasarizaki Lighthouse is a stunning landmark perched at the northern tip of the island, known locally as 'Yo Misaki' Cape. Just a short drive from the airport and Amami City, this historic lighthouse offers visitors an exhilarating experience. Although you can't enter the building itself, reaching its base involves a steep yet rewarding 5-10 minute hike up a narrow trail.
The lighthouse is located at the northern most point of the island and is subsequently very exposed. We visited on a day when the weather was very changeable and ended up climbing the path in strong winds and intermittent light rain. The views were amazing, especially with the weather making everything that much more dramatic! I’m sure the views are equally wonderful when there is sunshine and blue sky! Definitely worth your time if you are exploring that area and I wouldn’t be too concerned about the weather…it’s pretty breathtaking rain or shine! Enjoy and enjoy!

When I happened to visit, the gate was open as they were doing some work, and when I asked, I was told that I could view the first floor. I was grateful for this unexpected stroke of luck. Tomori Beach is a stunning destination located near Amami Airport, making it easily accessible for visitors. The beach boasts beautiful white sand and clear turquoise waters, providing a picturesque setting for relaxation year-round. While parking may be limited, the beach offers unique rock formations to explore and small pools teeming with marine life. Despite the lack of amenities, Tomori Beach provides a serene and uncrowded atmosphere, perfect for enjoying the natural beauty of Japan's southern region.
Great beach for snorkeling. There is a free parking, toilets and a hose to rince after swimming. There are not many visitors so there are wide spaces to lay your beach towel on. Unfortunately, you cannot fly a drone there as it's quite close to the airport.
Fido D — Google review
This place was so relaxing Its good to watch the sunset and the sunrise here 🥰
Reza L — Google review
Beautiful beach, not many people. Snorkeling is good, not many corals, but different fish swim. Lots of parrot fish. The beach is beautiful and not crowded, which is a big plus. The water is clear, and snorkeling is a great way to see what's underwater. While there aren't a lot of corals, you'll see many different kinds of fish swimming around, especially many parrot fish. They are very colorful and easy to spot.
P — Google review
By far the most beautiful beach in the north of Amami! The water is so crystal clear and the fish come almost to the shore. Be sure to bring an umbrella as there is hardly any shade!🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Olliver ( — Google review
Turtles, sea snakes, rays, moray eels, lots of fish and coral. Great beach for snorkeling. One of the more "crowded" beaches in the north, but parking normally not a problem, even on weekends.
Stubbe O — Google review
The pictures say it all! One of the best beach I've visited in Japan.. way less crowded than the more famous Okinawa island but same beautiful sea and relaxed atmosphere. No services offered here, bring your own scuba mask, parasol, food and drinks. (visited in August)

A great location to watch the sunrise! You can go snorkeling there too but there are signs about the RIP tides so caution is needed. A very beautiful beach.

Mangrove Primeval Forest, also known as Kinsakubaru, is often referred to as the "Galapagos of the East." The trail is adorned with lush moss, wildflowers, and ferns, offering an incredible opportunity to immerse oneself in nature's beauty. Visitors can enjoy a guided eco-tour through this enchanting forest within Amami Gunto National Park. Kayaking along the mangroves is highly recommended for a more immersive experience.
This is an amazing experience that is 100% worth it. You really shouldn’t skip this if you’re coming to Amami. It’s incredibly beautiful. I had also never canoed before this and was a little nervous not knowing what to expect, but there are guides that speak English well if you need it, and the canoeing itself is simple and relaxed- I think it is a great first canoeing experience.
Kayla G — Google review
I went here twice and just love this place! Perfect place for kayaking. I would recommend for renting a kayak to go a little bit further down the road. There it's a bit cheaper, longer and you gonna have more freedom.
Denis N — Google review
Definitely recommend this activity. Can enjoy huge and calm river with felling gentle wind and sometimes going through narrow and wooded area is such an exciting experience!

It was a very nice experience. A must visit on Amami oshima! Our guide was Makoto Oyama san, and he spoke English as well. He was very knowledgeable, attentive, enthusiastic! He explained us very well the flora and fauna of the mangroves. We came away with a smile and the wish to post a review as it was so impressive. An amazing and wonderful place!

The Honohoshi Coast offers a stunning shoreline adorned with beautiful rocks. The vistas are truly breathtaking, showcasing magnificent scenery. However, swimming is not advised due to the rough waters. It's highly recommended to visit this spot during low tide as it allows you to explore a cave located beneath a large rock formation. Remember not to take any rocks home as local superstition suggests it could bring about seven years of misfortune.
The only pebbles beach in Amami and over years of erosions, the pebbles are all smooth and some are as round as balls. I enjoyed this beach as the sound of the waves hitting on the rocks causing it to roll is pretty therapeutic. The car park is also well located in a scenic spot. When we were there, we had the entire beach to ourselves.
Rtexal T — Google review
Gorgeous rock beach! The views are incredible. The water is rough here so this is not a swimming beach. I recommend going during low tide because you can go under the big rock into a cave. Don’t take the rocks home though because according to superstition you’ll have 7 years of bad luck 😯
Megan P — Google review
It’s a rocky beach so not the best if you came here for swimming or sunbathing. The scenery is nice but there are better ones on the island.

The Tanaka Isson Memorial Museum, located near Amami Airport, houses a remarkable collection of the renowned Japanese painter Tanaka Isson. Situated within Amami Park, this museum showcases numerous works inspired by the captivating nature and scenery of Amami Oshima. Visitors can delight in the spacious exhibition area, where they can appreciate Tanaka Isson's magnificent paintings.
This artist astounding art was realised for their significance after his death but what amazing art he has crafted in his lifetime of solitude! Many of the art pieces were bewildering to see and best seen in person. The use of colours and shades are wonderfully augmented with his strokes. We had a delightful visit and do not to go too fast through the exhibits as each painting or art piece is really worth a deeper look into its details.

(Translated by Google) [Impressed by the sense of color and powerful paintings] Recommended by a local Amami resident, I visited this museum before heading to the airport for my return flight. This memorial museum is located within Amami Park. The parking lot is large and easy to park in. Outstanding descriptive ability and technique: The meticulous depictions using only shades of ink, the delicate yet powerful brushwork that conveys the vitality of plants and animals, and the precision of realism are so impressive they've been described as "divine." The innovative and bold compositions are reminiscent of ukiyo-e, Rinpa, and even photography, and the unconventional yet sophisticated compositions are wonderful. In particular, regarding the "sense of color and design," the rich sense of color and contemporary, modern design give the impression of "Japanese painting that's not too Japanese." Many of the works exude a fantastical worldview and a sense of tranquility. Despite the incredible skill involved, the tranquil, fantastical atmosphere that permeates the entire painting captivates viewers. Thank you to the person who recommended this to me. Heart Rock is a hidden gem located on the east coast of Tatsugo Town, only visible at low tide. This heart-shaped tide pool has become increasingly popular among visitors seeking a romantic spot for photos. The beach boasts clear waters and stunning beauty, making it worth the visit even beyond the heart-shaped rock. Accessible via a short path through lush vegetation, it offers a jungle-like experience. While smaller than expected, it's still a gorgeous sight to behold during low tide.
Although it was man made it still was nice to visit. The walk from parking would be problematic if many cars came but I used a motorcycle so it wasn’t a problem. Cool place to see if you’re in the vicinity.
Carlos S — Google review
The beauty of the beach and clear waters of the ocean are more worthy of the visit than the heart shaped rock itself. If the tide is not to high, it's nice to bathe inside the heart rock, as it feels like a natural pool. The beach that is accessed through a short path going through a thick vegetation, giving the feeling of walking through a jungle. There is a free parking about 200m from the entrance of the path to the beach. Swimming is not recommended there, due to strong rip currents and the presence of sharks, as clearly indicated by signs at the entrance to the path leading to the beach. According to a local diving instructor I talked to, sharks have been spotted but so far, no shark related issue has occurred. Finally, close by there is a shop selling goat milk based products (cheese, yogurt and ice cream)
Fido D — Google review
We couldn’t see the “heart”, but the beach was very nice and the hike in was like 5 mins through a trail. We parked where they had “heart beach free parking” and walked to the trail. Beach was rocky and rough not a good swimming beach.
Anne I — Google review
The rock does look somewhat like a heart. If you plan to visit, then visit during low tide. The rock location is precisely where it shows on Google Maps. I personally liked the esthetic of the surrounding tide pools and mountains as a backdrop. Even on an overcast day, it was a pretty beach with no people on it. According to the signs at the trailhead, there are sharks in the water and a strong rip current so be extremely careful and respect the ocean. The walk from the trailhead to the beach was about 5 minutes. It isn’t very far. My mom made the walk too.
Andy A — Google review
Very beautiful! Make sure you come during low tide though. You can’t see the heart when it’s not low tide
Megan P — Google review
Smaller than I expected but it’s gorgeous!!! Natural heart shape melted my heart :)) Strong waves and burning sun but it’s worth to come You can enjoy goat’s milk ice cream in a store close by, it’s fantastic
Jupiter N — Google review

Amami Oshima Tsumugi Village is renowned for its production of oshima tsumugi, a special type of silk fabric known for its intricate patterns and top-notch quality. Visitors can explore various shops on the island offering elegant kimonos and affordable souvenirs made from tsumugi. The village provides guided tours that offer detailed explanations and demonstrations of the meticulous processes involved in creating oshima tsumugi, from mud dyeing to weaving.
2024.08.26 It’s worth a visit if you treasure and respect traditional culture. It’s a time capsule. Prices are very steep. It’s not for the ordinary man on the street. But rather for distinguished individuals. Please do show support local producers where you can. Don’t just come to Amami, take a swim and leave.
虫でんでん — Google review
This place is the last place to carry on the traditional Amami Kimono craft. The dedication and creativity of the ladt remaining craftspeople give you food for thought. The kimonos are very expensive though, prices ranging from 300,000 to 1.1 million yen, and rightly so, but you can buy some souvenirs at a reasonable price.
AZM D — Google review
Really great place to go and learn about the dying process and technique of Amami and see lots of the products they make at their gift shop. However there’s not much information in English, so you’ll need to do the QR code scan and translation thing. Be sure to go one of the free tours, so that you can see everything in action even if you can understand the guide. The mud dying and weaving process is a traditional technique unique to the island and you can bring your own things to dye if you want to. There are also various other things like T-Shirts, handkerchiefs, eco bags etc that you can choose from. Prices vary. Be sure to call to make a reservation to get your preferred time slot, but they may have openings later in the day if you just show up and ask as well.

It's easy to buy a ticket. They have a guide but it's only in Japanese. There is English signage so you can still understand the process of dying and weaving. The staff are super friendly. There's also a shop to buy some of their products.

The promenade has stairs, making it difficult to walk around in a wheelchair, but some of the promenades and one observation deck in the Nature Observation Forest can be accessed by someone in a wheelchair, as there are no stairs. There are several steps to the observation deck. (See signboard) It might be a good idea to go at the end of your sightseeing trip departing from Amami on an early afternoon flight. Walking in the rain is not recommended.

(Translated by Google) One of the great things about this place is that you can choose between a guided tour or one without a guide. Strolling around without a guide, you'll be surrounded by the green of the trees and the sounds of insects, truly feeling like you're enjoying forest bathing. The 360-degree view from the top floor of Dragon Fort was spectacular, with both the surrounding mountains and the sea of Tatsugo. Be careful, as the trees at the other panoramic fort were so overgrown that all you could see was the forest. (Wry smile) That said, I recommend it as you can enjoy both the scenery and nature!

The mangrove forest in Kuroshio no Mori Mangrove Park, located at the Amami Oshima Sumiyoshi Road Station in Japan, is conserved to provide an educational and exploratory experience for visitors. The park serves as a valuable resource for learning about this crucial ecosystem. The city park ensures that this unique biome is protected and preserved for future generations to observe and learn from.
such a great time to spend an hour canoeing here w great friends! Very friend staff, nice natural views, and highly recommended to tourists. Thanks Amami !

We booked a low tide experience to see the animals and roots of the mangrove. Our guide Yamashitasan spoke excellent English and provided a lot of information about the mangrove and Amami Oshima. I highly recommend him as a guide!

Easy to access observation deck. Nice view.

The kayaking is really fun and beautiful to explore through the mangroves. There is a small museum and a cafe as well. Lots of good souvenirs in the shop.
Victoria W — Google review
Note: this is for the “entrance fee” only, not the kayak/canoe course. The “entrance fee” (only) is ¥500. The pamphlet says you’re entering a mangrove forest. You’re not. What you see is 95% a “ground golf” course. The other 5% is a long hike up stairs to a viewing platform that is partially obscured by some trees in need of pruning. You can mostly see the distant forest from there. That’s it. There is a tiny and old showroom with no English (not a big problem for me) and some tanks that may have mangrove life in it; but I couldn’t find it. Oh, there’s a 14 minute movie about the forest. All of those mangrove forest pictures you see here? Taken from the canoe tours. There are NO walkways through the forest. Not from this ¥500 yen entrance at any rate.

It is possible to enhance your comprehension while immersing yourself in the Amami Islands. The opportunity to engage in various interactive endeavors intrigued me. By taking a moment to reflect and absorb the surroundings, one can truly prepare themselves to connect with the region. The museum, known as Amami City Amami Museum, offers an abundance of fascinating activities that allow visitors to delve deeper into the rich heritage of this island destination.
This is a very cute little museum. Overall, it’s not very extravagant but if you do wanna learn more about the island and the culture, then I do recommend going here. There are multiple levels in the museum who are allowed to take pictures and videos. Honestly, I just thought it was pretty nice. It’s quaint and not very touristy
Yazmina S — Google review
Small museum but the exhibits are nice. There is English signage that cover the basics. They have a couple of interactive displays too which is fun. Be sure to explore the traditional house on the other side of the lawn. It's worth a look. (Technically you can look at this for free without visiting the museum.)
Netty M — Google review
Highly recommended to learn about history, people, and nature of the island. First floor has good video programs; select English subtitles, then the video you wish to see. A detailed relief model of the island on the first floor is great for planning. First floor exhibits focus on life by the sea, second floor is about history and culture, third floor focuses on nature. Most labels are only in Japanese, so Google Lens is handy to translate. You can also pick up an English map of the island. And there are outside exhibits of a traditional house and storage shelters. Open daily except closed 3rd Monday of month and 28 December-1 January. Individual adult admission is 310 yen.
Bill W — Google review
Interesting and very informative museum. However, it is a shame to have three live turtles in small buckets, in deplorable conditions. This is surely not the spirit of the museum, which promotes biodiversity and respect for living things. Please fix this issue, broke my heart.

The museum is really small, but it will give you a good idea about Amami island's history.
AZM D — Google review
A beautiful, bright museum featuring the political history, culture, and natural wonders of Amami and the surrounding islands. Many featured exhibits have both japanese and english descriptions. Videos have subtitles. Well worth the time and 310¥ (adult) admission.

Aquarium
The Amami Ocean Exhibition Hall is a two-story aquarium showcasing a diverse range of marine life, including fish, crustaceans, and coral. The central large fish tank replicates the marine environment of Amami Oshima, offering an up-close view of leisurely swimming fish. Visitors can explore the white sandy beach in front of the building and enjoy feeding turtles at scheduled times. The lower level features tanks with intriguing creatures like crabs using trash to camouflage their shells.
This place is a little old but the exhibits are amazing and you can also explore the white sandy beach just in front of the building too. The best place indoor in my opinion is definitely the turtle tank with the top shaped like a normal rocky shore and you can feed the turtles at periodic timings. There are other tanks at the lower level with interesting creatures like the grab that will use trash to camouflage it's shell! If you are hungry or looking for a meal, the turtle shaped burger is pretty interesting too.
Rtexal T — Google review
We visited the aquarium in the late afternoon. You can see all the exhibits in about 45 minutes to 1 hour. It is nice to learn about local marine life. They have sea turtle feedings frequently. You get lettuce at the aquarium and get to feed the turtles.
Andy A — Google review
¥500 to enter, very old facilities including their toilets. Small aquarium but it’s cheap so can’t complain. Sad for the one and only stingray that’s contained inside an aquarium which is only about twice its size. The design of the floor is lovely.
Halmiv S — Google review
Great place to bring the kids to see the marine creatures. It was a lot of fun to feed the sea turtles.

An excellent attraction for the family... the aquarium gives you the opportunity to feed the turtles... watch the big tank and know more about the history of Amami... Few meters more, the beach with his landscape is a must in your visit.

Small, but very nice little aquarium, cheap and worth the money. Seeing and feeding the turtles so up close is amazing, but the other aquarium tanks are definitely very well done. Great variety of moray eel especially. You can also buy food there.

Materiya Falls is a stunning waterfall located in a pristine natural area, part of the Natural World Heritage site. The cascading water from the forest creates a beautiful sight worth visiting while driving around the island. Although there are some disrepair issues with the trails as of Spring 2024, it's still considered a beautiful place and worth the drive. There are two walking routes to reach the waterfall, one shorter and near the car park, and another longer route starting further up the road.
Super pretty waterfall! Lots of car park space, and there is space to swim 🏊‍♀️

Manenzaki Observation Deck, located at the northern tip of Tokunoshima Island, offers breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean and East China Sea. The deck provides a stunning vantage point to witness the morning sun rising above the horizon, casting ever-changing gradients of color across the sky. Visitors are advised to be cautious when traveling by car or motorcycle due to poor visibility on the road leading to the observation deck.

Kaganbana Tunnel, also known as the "dragon eye," is a short 29-meter tunnel located by the water. What makes it special is that during the spring and autumn equinoxes, the setting sun aligns perfectly in the center of the tunnel, creating a mesmerizing glowing silhouette resembling an eye. This phenomenon has turned Kaganbana Tunnel into a popular tourist spot, with visitors stopping to capture this magical sight.
It’s a very picturesque tunnel. This is a nice place to watch the sunset or even just driving throughout the day is nice.
