1Tokonyan

Nestled in the charming city of Tokoname, the iconic Tokonyan stands tall at an impressive 3.8 meters, making it a must-see for visitors. This giant white cat statue, with its paw gracefully raised over a concrete wall, serves as a welcoming beacon along the famous Maneki-Neko Street.
Beside the big cat, those pottery smaller cats are worth visiting as artworks, no matter you like cats or not. You will be surprised by the creative talent of those artists.
Marc C — Google review
Very cute and made us soooooo happy. But today was soooooo cold and so we were staying outdoor for those lovely cats was such a challenge.
Gin C — Google review
Thought it was super cute. Simple joys really. The whole experience was just about 5minutes, unless you really take time to notice the efforts in the craft.
Delight S — Google review
Very interesting place to be if you enjoy walking, cats, arts... the village trail is a 30-45mins walking distance with time for photos, stop for restroom, etc. There are many scruptures along the way, on the side walk, on the ground. The station is two stop after the airport terminals. Other than the train, the walk is free of charge. I would love to visit there on my next visit again.
Stephanie C — Google review
The guardian of Tokoname. You can't miss it, just walk on the maneki neko street and you can see it from below. Go to the pottery footpath streets and you can see it closer.
Helcanen H — Google review
Lovely sculpture of a huge beckoning cat along the bridge.
Janice K — Google review
Many shops are closed. Worth a walk to take some photos if your trip is not a rush one. 500 yen for parking and you need to buy a ticket from a self service machine inside the shop and display it at your windshield before you start your walking tour.
Agnes C — Google review
At the end of a bridge, you’ll find the head of a giant waving cat — a perfect spot for a memorable photo. Beneath the bridge, a road winds its way through, with the walls on either side covered in countless images of waving cats, creating a playful and whimsical atmosphere. You can’t drive directly up to the cat’s head, nor is there any place to stop your car on the road beneath the bridge. To reach it, you’ll need to walk for about 10 minutes — but the short stroll is well worth it.

Dokanzaka, also known as Clay Pipe Hill, is a picturesque slope in Tokoname adorned with sake barrels and large pipes, and scattered with fragments of ceramics. This area is renowned for its focus on pottery, attracting visitors from around the globe who come to learn the Japanese art of crafting pottery. The setting for the famous Japanese anime 'A Whisker Away' is inspired by this charming locale.
Great photo spots in the village area, there is a route where you start from point 1-20, you can spend a few hours walking and seeing various pottery shops you can purchase many styles and they are all hand made. Recommend for those people that love pottery and seeing Japan’s traditional village.
V M — Google review
This area was just fantastic on every level! It is an artsy community that's primary focus is pottery. People from all over the world come here to learn how to craft it the way the Japanese do. The setting for the famous Japanese anime A Whisker Away was from this area as well, which made the experience very exciting for my daughter as she pointed out things from the movie. The visitor's center at the train station gave us a map of the Pottery Footpath so we could see the 25 highlights in the area. There is an A path that is shorter than a longer B path. The path is marked very well with signs! There were craftsmen working in shops creating pieces on the spot, many cool unique shops, and so many unique things to look at! There were also places you could make your own pottery- or paint it as well. Even the cafes and restaraunts had a cool flair of pottery in their buildings and served food on unique pieces. The town really has come together to highlight their craft- the walls, streets, and entire area was just a pure showcase of all things pottery. I took so many pictures- there is no way I could post them all- if you are ever in this area, and you like pottery, you should definitely check it out!

Nature & Parks
Rinku Beach is a picturesque coastal destination located just a short distance from the trail. It offers stunning views of Ise Bay and Mie Prefecture, making it an ideal spot for joggers and walkers to enjoy its 3km stretch of coastline. Adjacent to the beach is a large Aeon Mall with various dining options, while nearby attractions include Mentai Park Oarai, a unique theme park dedicated to cod roe.
A short walk from the AEON mall or Rinku Tokoname station, this man made beach is a great place to spend a summer evening. There are changing rooms and public toilets, the sea is ideal for swimming and the sun sets directly over the water. When the sun goes down, a party atmosphere begins with groups setting off fireworks and bbq areas turning up the music. This place is special because it’s the place where my daughter experienced the sea for the first time.
Alix — Google review
Rinku beach is a very beautiful beach with clear water and beautiful sand. It offers a beautiful scenery in the morning and is a beautiful place to walk through in the evening.
Giyuu — Google review
Nice beach, it's quiet. Met some new friends and had a good time.
Aaron J — Google review
The sunset on Rinku Beach is always a great location to see. Today, the waves were calm and the weather was nice, and I was able to see a very romatic sunset. There is a paid parking lot next to the beach, and there is also a toilet, so it seems to be a wonderful spot where you can spend special time with your family, friends, and partner.

If you have time to kill at the airport, this is a good place to visit. 1 station from the airport + 20 mins walk from the nearest station but still its good and relaxing.

Museum
The INAX Museums offer a captivating journey into the world of ceramics, showcasing an impressive collection of tiles and terracotta artifacts. This museum complex features over 1,000 decorative tiles from various cultures, including ancient Egyptian replicas and traditional Japanese designs. Visitors can explore six distinct halls filled with valuable ceramics, ancient toilets, and even participate in hands-on pottery workshops at the INAX Live Museum. The experience is enriched by excellent English descriptions throughout the exhibits.
This museum is infact a collection several smaller museums so go around the grounds! You have to book in advance if you want to do the pottery / ceramic workshops. Definitely worth the small detour if you are already on the pottery trail.
Tryon Q — Google review
The INAX Museums feature a fascinating Toilet Museum, tracing the evolution of Japanese toilets. Don't miss the gift shop's unique souvenir: "manaka" (monaka), a toilet-shaped sweet filled with delicious red bean paste. It's a fun and quirky treat!
Jessie W — Google review
Definitely worth the price for wristband access to both INAX and tile museum. I enjoyed learning about the history of Tokoname and its role in ceramic production. The museum experience has been designed with the spectators comfort in mind, they even have UV umbrellas outside each museum which can be borrowed when walking from one building to another. The grounds have a workshop, the old factory building (now a museum), a restaurant and the tile museum. The best part for me was the tile museum, which featured exhibits from around the world describing how different cultures use ceramics. Everything was in English so I could understand it fully. The mini exhibit on porcelain toilets was entertaining and memorable!
Alix — Google review
visited this place as part of a cultural exchange program. Wonderful place to bring your kids and try tiles crafts and know the history of the beautiful city Tokoname.
Muntasir M — Google review
A really holistic and modern facility to learn more about the history of Tokoname pottery, bricks, and more! Even without reservations, you can go to the workshop to try your hand at making mosaic pieces. For a very reasonable 900 yen, I made my own photo frame with unlimited basic tiles! It was really enjoyable and a good way to immerse yourself in the special craftsmanship of Tokoname 😄

They are amazing...it's a very nice place to come to visit... In your stay in Japan you have to visit this museum, the reasons are to learn how was the life's os people from so long ago ... And how important Tokoname was to the Japanese people ... We are amazed with the history...thank you to have us there ... Love this museum 🖼️🎨
Mari O — Google review
I chanced upon this due to a street sign and it turned out to be an absolute eye opener. This is a complex of various buildings covering different topics about ceramics, like history of Tokoname town, where the stuff fired in their kilns have been used in other places of Japan, how pottery stuff was made throughout history all over the world, and lots and lots of beautiful tiles.
Z Z — Google review
I was totally incredulous when my wife suggested we should visit the INAX museum of ceramics after we had a wonderful lunch with our good friend in Chita peninsula. The only connection I could think of between INAX and ceramics were toilets, and I wasn’t even a big fan of INAX’s toilets. I was pleasantly surprised, however, by an eclectic collection of authentic artworks, some of which date back to the ancient Islamic and Egyptian empires. It was also quite amusing to see a section exclusively dedicated to stunningly beautiful “old toilets.” I was slightly disappointed that my wife didn’t enjoy them as much as I did as she was put off by the fact that all of them were once used. (Who cares?) By the way, the buildings themselves were so pretty that they had a feel of museum displays in their own rights. Highly recommended!

Specialty Museums
Tokoname Tou no Mori Museum is a free and extensive museum showcasing historical pottery items displayed by era. The exhibits have been recently redesigned, making them easy to see and understand. The museum offers comprehensive insights into the history of Tokoname pottery, with an entrance inspired by the inside of a kiln. While access may be challenging, the museum provides an enjoyable experience for visitors interested in pottery. Additionally, special exhibitions offer diverse experiences based on the season.
Very well made and curated Museum. Must visit if you want to understand a litttle bit better the evolution of Tokoname Ceramic importance through Japan History.
SITIO S — Google review
Honestly, not very interesting unless you are extremely into ceramics. However, there is no admission fee and it’s only about 10 minutes away (on foot) from the INAX museums. If you are visiting around the area and like ceramics, it won’t hurt to swing by.

(Translated by Google) As a free museum, it is large in scale, and the exhibits are easy to see as historical items are displayed by era. However, it is ☆-1 that access is poor. Also, due to the exhibits in the facility, we do not recommend visiting with small children. We try to prevent the pottery from falling over, but it would be a disaster if something were to happen. There are also special exhibitions, so I thought it would be nice to see different things depending on the season.

(Translated by Google) This is a museum where you can learn about Tokoname ware and its 1,000-year history. Tokoname kilns are one of the six ancient kilns of the Middle Ages, and pottery began to be produced there at the end of the Heian period. As you pass through the entrance, you will see a row of large jars, which are synonymous with Tokoname ware. If you go further inside, there are exhibits about Tokoname ware from modern times onwards. Among them is a huge Ro-go large jar that was used to make aircraft fuel during the Greater East Asia War. Tokoname ware was also used in the industrial field. Tokoname ware is also famous for its clay pipes, and I was really surprised at the wide variety of pipes. In particular, in recent years, the perforated ceramic pipes (ceraducts) used to protect underground cables at airports, ports, highways, and tunnels are Tokoname ware. Some pottery production areas, such as Sanage Kiln and Atsumi Kiln, have ended their history, but it seems that the history of Tokoname ware is still continuing. When I visited, there was a mini-exhibition called "Okamoto Taro in Tokoname 1969" taking place in conjunction with the INAX Live Museum exhibition. According to the explanation, in 1969, Okamoto Taro gave a lecture at Tokoname City Hall entitled "Don't become a potter. Be a human being who lives ferociously." These words are similar to "Your main occupation? You're a human being!" PS: When I visited again later, a special exhibition called "Tokoname ware from the Edo period" was being held. It wasn't a very large exhibition, but you could see Tokoname ware that you don't usually see, such as ceramic gravestones, tea utensils and boat-shaped sake bottles.

Heritage preservation
Nestled into the hillside along the Pottery Footpath, Noborigama, or "Climbing Kiln," is a remarkable piece of Japan's industrial heritage. Constructed in the late 1800s, this impressive brick structure stands as one of Japan's largest climbing kilns and has been recognized as an Important National Cultural Asset. With its unique design featuring eight firing chambers on a gentle slope, it showcases traditional pottery-making techniques that date back to the Edo period.
This was cool to see a piece of history. It is right next to a park and Cafe. Great place to relax.

(Translated by Google) Although Tokoname prospered as a pottery town, its focus was on the manufacturing of building materials, but its popularity as a tourist attraction is still low, and the city is not well-developed. This climbing kiln is one of the largest existing examples in Japan, and although it has been designated as a heritage of industrial modernization, the state of preservation and the way it is displayed to the public is poor. It would be nice to see the huge climbing kiln if you could see it, but the decaying roofing roof blocks the view, so even if you go to the site, you can only see the scenery as shown in the photo. . It's a shame because I think it would have been much more impressive if it was as well maintained as the nearby INAX Live Museum. I really think so because the product is good.

Tokoname Manekineko Street, also known as Tokoname Lucky Cat Street, is a charming destination renowned for its abundance of shops offering Japanese lucky cat figurines known as manekineko. These adorable feline figurines are believed to bring various types of luck and make for unique souvenirs or gifts. The street features a delightful display of 39 manekineko sculptures, each with the artist's name and representing different meanings.
#raeshares_セブチ巡り i visited this place to take Jun's picture, and luckily, all of them were within walking distance. it wasn't planned, but I arrived around sunset, and it looked beautiful. there were a total of 39 "manekineko" sculptures. i loved how they had the name of the artist, as well as what each artwork represents. i'm not sure since when this was displayed, but despite being outdoors, it was preserved very well.

If you're a cat lover, then you definitely cannot miss this, there's an entire walkthrough of the ceramic village area and most of the work is cat related. This lucky cat street is the beginning of the walkthrough, and it's super cute. However, some of the display work is broken and a bit dirty, understand it's difficult to avoid when the work is displayed outdoor, but would be good if they could have some regular tender, love and care. Having said that, the whole experience is good and no regrets in taking the long train journey to see this.

(Translated by Google) Seaweed grows with nutrients brought in from rivers, so it is said that the closer you are to the estuary, the more delicious the seaweed you can harvest. Onizaki on the Chita Peninsula is harvested from some of Japan's leading first-class rivers, the Ibi River, Nagara River, and Kiso River. A large amount of the rich nutrients stored in the Nagano, Gifu, Aichi, and Mie prefecture basins are supplied to Ise Bay. It is said that the first place to get this nutrition from the currents produced by the Ibuki and Suzuka grated fish in winter is near the Ohno coast in Onizaki, Tokoname City, Aichi Prefecture, located in the northern part of the Chita Peninsula. The seaweed produced in Onizaki, grown with its rich nutrients, is characterized by its deep flavor, and is well-known in the seaweed industry and in the local area where it is produced, making it popular as a luxury gift. Currently, most of the supplies are to high-end sushi restaurants, and there are very few local restaurants that use it. As far as I know, there are ramen restaurants in Chita that use Onizaki seaweed, and I've eaten at Sakura and Showa-tei, so I recommend them (^^)♪ Also, this time, the seasoned seaweed from Onizaki Nori was on sale at the tourist plaza, and when I looked closely, I saw the word ``premium'' shining on it, so I couldn't help but buy it (lol) ◯Premium Flavored Onizaki Nori ¥520 If you roll it up with rice and eat it at home, it's delicious with the sweetness of the seasoned seaweed! ️ Compared to Onizaki's regular seasoned seaweed that I had before, I feel like the flavor of the seaweed is much better lol Recommended to accompany rice 😚✨ (Original)

The Tokoname Pottery Footpath, known as Yakimono Sanpomichi, is a delightful journey through the remnants of a Showa-era pottery village. This scenic path showcases the rich history of Tokoname's pottery, which has thrived for over 1,000 years. With two routes to choose from—Course A at 1.6 kilometers featuring popular attractions and Course B stretching 4 kilometers that delves deeper into the city's ceramic legacy—there’s plenty to explore.
This entire footpath are really cute and very, very historical, Its lined up with lots of cats statue and historical building dating back to years ago, very very edo period ambience. This is an easy walk from the station and road are really manageable, such a serene walk Its very serene and peaceful and tranquil that you can't believe its only 3 minutes train from Chubu Airport

A great day trip from Nagoya City to this ancient pottery village filled with beautiful cat displays. Less than 30min on the Meitetsu Limited Express. Go on an hour to an hour and a half footpath to explore and learn about the village’s rich history dating as far back as the Meiji Period. The path is well maintained and marked. The main thing to keep in mind is that there are still people living in this village, so please be considerate and abide by the rules from the tourism information guidelines. Wave to the big statue of Maneki Neko on the bridge over Tokoname Manekineko-dori leading into the village. Marvel at some pottery art and items sold in the local shops along the footpath. There are shops with items ranging from ¥ to ¥¥¥. Great to buy yourself a souvenir or a gift to that special person. There’s also cafès along the path. Most important, get to spot number 9 on the footpath and snap a photo of Dokan-zaka Hill (one of Japan's top 30 home town hillside ways). Another historical sight is the Noborigama (Climbing Kiln) - designated National Important Folk Cultural Property. I can’t list them all, but this should make you want to go experience this place sooner than later. Add it to your list of places in Aichi Prefecture.

This was a fun place to see examples of different styles of pottery. The shops were fantastic with super nice people. The prices of the pottery could vary from very reasonable to very expensive. The walking route was quite nice and a great way to spend a morning. I loved the bakery that was on site that used a furnace. Great stuff and a nice place. The tourist information staff were great and helped too.

Would have been quite fun to wander around all the small little lanes if the weather had permitted. It was rainy and cold and most shops along the route were closed. If you have time and the weather permits, go for it. If it's raining, forget it. Also, the local tokoname shuttle route is a bit confusing. Please not that it is not a loop service!

A fantastic small street if you are in the area, and I saw a few photographers making use of the unique scene here. It's a short walk and hence best to visit only if you happen to be in the area. The cool and dignified bamboo forest inside the park was impressive. There are many hills, so be careful not to fall. There is also an observation deck that is a restored version of the castle, but the stairs here are too steep so be careful of falling. (Translated by Google) As we were driving along the industrial road, we noticed a faintly visible castle, so my daughter (2nd grade) and I went in today. When you drive up the narrow and steep slope, you will be surprised to find that there is even a parking lot! ️ Even though it was daytime, it was eerily unpopular, and my daughter I was scared, but when I got to the castle (called the observation deck here), I was surprised to see that it was well maintained. ️ Climbing to the third floor and looking down from the castle tower, you could see the coastline, and it was a pretty nice view. When I checked, it seems to be a public facility, so feel free to visit. Moooviとこなめ is a hidden gem of a children's playground, perfect for cold winter days. It's less crowded compared to other places and has limited capacity. The facility offers indoor and outdoor play areas with various toys, a sandbox, and water play. Visitors can make advance reservations or walk in if space is available. There are time limits for each visit, typically 80 minutes per session. The entry fee is 300 yen per person.

There are staff members who will play with you (it is not childcare, so please do not leave them unattended). I was very grateful when I took my siblings alone as an adult, when they were in different grades or in different places to play. The boat racing track is right in front of the park, so it is quite fun when the race starts. (It is closer than it looks on TV, so it is much more enjoyable.) The time is set, but it is not so long that it becomes unsatisfying. However, it is good that it tires you out in a good way. There are also events indoors. The staff will entertain you.
