Herkenrode Abbey, located just a few miles from the city of Hasselt in Belgium, is an impressive complex with a history spanning over 800 years. The buildings that still stand today date back to the 16th-18th century and were once part of the richest and largest women's abbey in the area. The abbey offers an intriguing experience center where visitors can learn about the mysterious wealth of the nuns and their activities.
A truly lovely spot to explore! The garden features a rich variety of plants and beautifully maintained paths through peaceful nature. There’s also a museum within the complex, and a café where you can enjoy a drink or lunch. A lovely destination for a relaxing day out – highly recommended! Plus, there’s a large free parking area right in front.

Very nice outdoor space with a good bar lounge self service restaurant, a museum and botbical garden to visit. In the summer great place for events or picnics. Its on cross roads of several bycile routes. For wheelchair there are facilities. For the small kids there are special routed with info. Overall a great site to spend some hours you learn someting good view with a nice drink.

We are here to do schatten van vlieg with the children. They were ao existed and also us. The place and the story in this museum are amazing. If you are a museum person then this place should be one of your places to visit. The people that work there are friendly. There are rol chairs acces also. From the parking place to the place is far. But it is worthy. The toilet is clean and there is toilet dor little ones too. For the museums you can choose a variety of guides. You can use earphones or just reading the book. Outside, there is chapel that builds with iron, and it's beautiful. And also there is another art place. An illusion art. This place is recommended to visit.

Beautiful historical abbey on the outskirts of Hasselt. Perfect location for a nice walk (even from the car park to the abbey you already pass some cows) or bicycle ride. There is also a nice bar/restaurant with an outdoor playground (our boys loved the place!), so the abbey and surrounding area are definitely worth a visit. The onsite bookshop was also very nice offering a variety of books for children of all ages...
Harald C — Google review
In general, it has been a delightful evening, and the music performance was absolutely fantastic. However, sitting at the far back, I couldn't help but wish for a method to distribute the sound more evenly, reaching all the corners of the venue.
Manuel G — Google review
Herkenrode Abbey has a small museum, (herb) garden, and organizes exhibitions. There also is a small playground. The surrounding countryside is great for walks, with several walking paths of different length, but there is a lot of noise from the nearby highway.

"The Abdij van Herkenrode is a captivating blend of history and tranquility. A must-visit for history enthusiasts and nature lovers alike."

Art Museum Z33, also known as the House for Contemporary Art, Design and Architecture, is located in the Beguinage of Hasselt. The museum offers a space for creativity to contemporary artists and showcases their projects and exhibitions. Designed by Italian architect Francesca Torzo, the museum's unique exterior features diamond-shaped bricks. Since its inauguration in 2020, it has become a great addition to the cultural scene with its fascinating collection of contemporary art.
Went to appreciate the architecture & interior of this museum. Got a little bit disappointed that we had no access to the terrace where a beautiful picture view can be taken of the patio facade. We went on a Saturday. It was semi-busy. Worth for a visit. :)

Lovely spot in the city center. I wish they would have told me that half the museum was closed due to a new exhibit going in before I purchased a ticket. I saw what was on display in about 30 minutes. It wasn’t expensive so there’s that. Nice space. Friendly staff. They have a coat rack for your stuff. Overall a nice outing at I did peak in at the new exhibit they were working on and it looks really cool. Want to go back again for sure.

Great display of contemporary art, design and architecture.
Carlos G — Google review
Disappointing art collection in the basement. I know that Art is not up for discussion but what was shown on the ground floor is really not worth the hefty entrance fee. First floor was more interesting but overall not recommended.
Andreas — Google review
A new aisle was inaugurated and gives a fresh perspective to the museum. Staff also very nice, helped me fînd my way in the museum. If you go to to Hasselt, this is a must-see!
Celine R — Google review
It costed 5€ for a student ticket, when the rest of the museums in Hasselt cost 3€. This would not have been so bad if half of the museum was closed, so we finished the visit in 20 minutes. Also, it would be nice that the info of the paintings was in English, instead of only depending on the brochure.

Bokrijk Open Air Museum, located between Genk and Hasselt, is a popular destination for travelers seeking to immerse themselves in the rich history and culture of Belgium. The museum features period buildings and furniture that showcase village life before WWI, offering visitors a glimpse into the architectural design of the nineteenth century. Additionally, the outdoor playground at Bokrijk provides entertainment for all ages with giant slides, jungle gyms, and adaptive equipment for disabled children.
This place is amazing, they should have gotten 5 stars. It's huge, full of fun stuff to do and see, for kids and all age. The ticket price, resto price, and workshop price are very friendly. We visited yesterday with our two kids , and in 1/2 day did not finish to see everything because we wanted to spend time in every stops we saw. I will surely come back
Puji K — Google review
When someone tells me "open air museum" I think of a small open farm-type area with 4 or 5 houses and some old machinery depicting what the old times were. Bokrijk Open-Air Museum exceeded my expectations! With over 150 authentic buildings, it's a vast and immersive experience that transports you back in time. From historic homes and farms to working watermills and traditional crafts, there's so much to explore. The attention to detail and sensory experiences make it a standout destination. A must-visit for history buffs, architecture enthusiasts, and anyone looking for a unique Family day out in Belgium! Parking is 5 eur, entrance fee 17 eur pp, and very much worth it. Don't skip the bread tasting at the bakery ;)
Nuno L — Google review
Bokrijk Open Air Museum Bokrijk is an extraordinary open-air museum where you can step back in time and truly feel the atmosphere of past centuries. Walking through the vast grounds surrounded by beautiful nature, you get the impression that life from hundreds of years ago comes alive before your eyes. What stands out most is the authentic architecture – old cottages, farmhouses, and craftsmen’s workshops – everything is faithfully recreated to reflect the spirit of traditional villages. Every detail has been carefully designed, allowing visitors to genuinely experience what everyday life used to be like. Apart from its historical value, Bokrijk also captivates with its landscapes. The surrounding nature, picturesque views, and peaceful atmosphere make a visit here not only a history lesson but also a wonderful opportunity to relax. It’s definitely a place worth visiting – both for adults, who will appreciate the richness of culture and tradition, and for children, who can see history come to life in an engaging way. Bokrijk is a journey through time that leaves lasting memories.

Interesting and super nice road into history. Lots of things to see and do for families, also small ones. Roads are all accessible. Workshops for kids are very nice. Take into account that it takes 3-4 hours do it at all at minimum. At the entrance though the weed could be cut. Very nice place to spend a sunday with the family.
R — Google review
Awesome open air museum. All the information boards are available in English. Only a few videos in Dutch were not available in English. We met one awesome worker (a baker) who spoke very good English who we talked with for a while. The site is huge. We probably saw a little over half of it on our day there. I especially liked the 60s section. Be prepared for lots of walking.
Corey D — Google review
This place is a little (big) gem. Great for a fun day out with the kids with plenty to do and space to run around without costing too much (€37 for a family). We were there for 4 hours and didn't manage to see it all. Lots of playing games and exploring the old ways of life. There's also an amazing separate huge park/playground in the site (free). Parking is a reasonable €5. Really happy we came. Had a great time
Dave T — Google review
A great place to spend your weekend! At first I thought it would be just another boring museum, but it turned out to be really interesting. We really enjoyed seeing different master classes like how to make ropes, oils from the flaxseeds and nuts. We even tried their local bakery goods, and they were delicious 👍🏻 We also loved playing games, it was really fun and entertaining. During our walk between the houses, we saw not just the architecture of the houses, but also the everyday life of local peasants like a teacher, a priest, a housewife and a gardener. It was really fun to watch their acting. Besides that, there are lots of live animals, all are very well cared for. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. The parking costs 5€, and the horse carriage ride 5€ per person. The price of the ticket is 17€ and it is definitely worth it.
Diana S — Google review
Lovely experience, we were here for an afternoon as left it rather late, in not the best of weather. An entire day would have been better. We spoke english and found it easy to navigate. The restaurant served lovely food in nice surroundings. The whole family got a quick go at spinning a clay pot. I read some of the more negative reviews out of curiosity and honestly they're unrecognisable to the place I visited which was freindly with a number of interesting exhibits. To note visited with autistic child and found it friendly and welcoming with enough to engage, the site is quite large so plan accordingly.

Churches & Cathedrals
Cathedral St. Quintinus, also known as Hasselt Cathedral, is a Catholic church located in the heart of Hasselt. This magnificent place of worship boasts a Gothic architectural design with a soaring tower, replacing the old Romanesque church that once stood there. It acquired cathedral status in 1967 and features a stunning interior that is highly recommended for visitors to explore. The city of Hasselt itself is praised for its pleasant atmosphere and cleanliness, making it an ideal destination for tourists.
What a majestic cathedral 🙏

Beautiful Catholic church. Worth visiting this place in the city center. All recommendations.
Nemanja G — Google review
In August 2023 it's under renovation on the outside, but it didn't impact the visit inside at all. There are many paintings around, both on the walls and standing at man height, some sculptures and a massive organ where you would expect it to be. There was some choral music being played which helped creating an ambience, but the church lacked charm and seemed rather new. Some kind of explanation was totally missing as well. Would still go in if visiting Hasselt since there is no ticket/entrance fee.
Giulia — Google review
Hasselt is highly recommended city to visit. It's not biggest but very nice atmosphere, like in Netherlands. Clean and nice. Restaurants, tourism.

One of my absolute favorites. Amazing mix of styles, impressive organ. Top landmark in Hasselt, surviving in a once cosy town centre increasingly covered by out if proportion concrete building projects.

Museum is ok for adults, it is unfortunately not a suitable place for children. There are little to no activities aimed at younger visitors, making it difficult to keep them engaged. For families looking for an interactive or child-friendly experience, this museum may not be the best choice. Perhaps the museum could consider adding a dedicated children’s area or special activities to make it more appealing to a wider audience.

Nestled in the heart of Hasselt, Plopsa Indoor Hasselt is Belgium's pioneering indoor theme park, having opened its doors in 2005. This vibrant destination spans nearly a hectare and boasts over 20 attractions that are sure to delight young families. The park features thrilling rides inspired by beloved Studio 100 characters such as Mega Mindy, Piet Piraat, and Bumba. For those looking for some outdoor fun, there's also a playground and climbing mountain to explore.
This place is amazing! No wait times for rides at all! Really fun attractions, and clean. We literally had the best day of our lives here. Perfect for a 4 year old.
Rebecca M — Google review
Not a big place , but loads of options to keep a 4 year old busy for 3-4 hours. There are options to eat inside. You do pay extra for the parking around €12.5 . We were able to find discounted tickets on groupon
Abhi — Google review
We had such an amazing day at Plopsa Indoor! The kids had a blast playing non-stop, and honestly, I had just as much fun watching them enjoy every moment. We were lucky to go on a super hot day, so the outdoor water fountain area was perfect — they could cool down and play for hours. Everything was clean, safe, and so much fun. Definitely a place we’ll be visiting again soon!
Guljennet T — Google review
We took our granddaughters to this place. I worried when we arrived because most children seemed to be the age of 4-6. Our granddaughters are 8 and 11. They however had a wonderful time. They loved the swings and the rollercoaster. The falling tower was also a big success, and so was the rocking ship. We were there for 6 hours, so that should tell you something. 😉 We had lunch, but I would recommend taking your own food. The place was clean, and although it was inside, the noise level was very tolerant. There are water fountain outside that the children can play in, so take a towel and a set of dry clothes. Our granddaughters were disappointed that they could not play on the water. We had a wonderful time, even if it is supposed to be more for younger children, our granddaughters had a blast.
Christine J — Google review
This is a upscale indoor playground at best, and you pay the plopsa brand premium. We had to pay 29 euros per ticket at the door, and we where disappointed in the vallue we received for it. The playground is nice, but not that nice, within 2 hours our daughter was done with everything and we where out again. The rollercoaster is a nice feature, bit for the price you better go to the real plopsaland outdoor, as there at least you get some valkue for money. It would be nice if either only 1 parent has to pay or parents go in free like on all the regular indoor playground. 2 stars for the luxere setup but not worth the money...
Onno H — Google review
Very nice place, easy parking and friendly staff.Family-friendly park, themed around Maya and Bumba characters, I'd say more oriented towords younger kids. There's a fast-food restaurant on site which, as expected, is pretty expensive for what you get. Parking costs 12.5 euro, for lockers you have to pay 6 euro. My daughter and I enjoyed every minute. Definitely worth it surely recommend it.
Tarintata — Google review
On a week day (Wednesday) perfect if you don’t have to wait in line for anything! Perfect for kids from 100cm tall they can get in all of the attractions and as an adult you can too and some of them are cool! We loved it!!
Mayra C — Google review
It’s a good place for young children to play, although the ticket price is a little bit high.regarding this small place. You can buy online and find some good bargains. Food is expensive and you can take your own food which isn’t a big issue. The souvenir toys are too expensive.

Villa Imagination, previously known as Literary Museum, is a captivating museum in Hasselt that celebrates children's books and their ability to ignite the imagination. The museum offers dreamy exhibits that transport visitors to different worlds without leaving the premises. It's an educational space suitable for all ages, where you can explore enchanting books and illustrations. The temporary exhibition "Lettepret" encourages both young and old to appreciate beautiful drawings while getting creative in various rooms.
Such an inspirational place to be, it was a great experience for our 3 years old and also for us. The Monsters! expo is great as well as the regular exhibition and so many beautiful books, spent almost 2 hours, definitely should be seen.
Yudum E — Google review
The focus here in this museum is on creativity. Children can immerse themselves in drawing and painting, which is not only fun but also stimulates their imagination. They can proudly take home their creations. In addition, there are beautiful drawings and small paintings on the walls, which are also interesting for adults. The room with the Little Red Riding Hood theme is particularly impressive. The atmosphere and decor are thoughtfully designed, bringing the fairy tale to life.

(Translated by Google) Beautiful (temporary) exhibition of picture book illustrators. Theme: the forest. Beautifully done: you literally and figuratively walk through a forest full of information: from the idea with sketches to the end product. You can learn more about the design of their book from each illustrator through a video. The visit is covid safe. Disadvantage: little space in this house. Super narrow stairs and bad acoustics.

(Translated by Google) What a villa that captures the imagination... Spent a wonderful time surrounded by beautiful illustrations... books... installations... rooms, steps, and fantastic cabinets... simply delightful... as a (retired) kindergarten teacher, I lose myself in all that beauty... I suspect it's wonderful to participate in the workshops with children... Instantly forgot our NMBS misery... 👍🏻 ❤️❤️❤️

Beautiful park. I really recommend everyone to visit this park. You have a large parking lot for cars. You can walk, run, ride a bike, have a picnic with friends. All recommendations for this place!

Beautiful nature, perfect to clear your mind. 🙏❤️

You can touch the feeling of the woods beside some gorgeous animals you can see. There is also a road that you can go dive in to the forest. Don’t worry about parking place for your car because that’s enough for everybody. If you need to refuel your energy, you can go visit the restaurant that is inside the park.

Botanical garden
Nestled in the heart of Belgium, Arboretum Bokrijk boasts one of the country's most extensive plant collections. Established in 1965, this sprawling botanical garden spans 18 hectares and features a delightful array of ornamental gardens, including a Mediterranean garden and a fern garden. Visitors can meander through diverse trails that lead to hidden corners filled with vibrant trees, shrubs, and flowers. The best time to visit is from late spring to early autumn when the blooms are at their peak.
This is an awesome place to take walks amidst nature. The place has a very well maintained garden , water bodies and I heard more sounds of birds compared to any other places . I would love to go there again.

this arboretum is amazing, I love coming here. tidy, cozy, full of magical little paths and little bridges, a perfect place for a long walk. The problem is that parking costs 5 euros, which I think is a bit much, but it's worth it. The arboretum is the perfect place to relax, take a nap or read. I love it

Emine C — Google review
This is a place you can enjoy a unique mix of experience of nature, relaxation and culture in an open air atmosphere. The arboretum, which is free to enter(not so for the open air museum though.), offers numerous walking and cycling opportunities including the acclaimed cycling route dubbed 'cycling through the water'.

Hidden gem in the middle of not so busy green park in Bokrijk 😍 Inhaling the fresh air and cherishing the beauty of mother nature at its peak! 🍃💚🌳🪵🌿🌱

Beautiful! There are a number of trails that lead to nowhere but that makes it fun! All plants are well maintained, and the variety of plants is phenomenal. There is no greenhouse but there are some tropical plants out there. The plants are so combined that there is almost always blossom everywhere, throughout the spring/summer.

Oude Stad is a charming destination that beautifully captures the essence of history and nostalgia. This recreated old town showcases architecture from the 17th to 18th centuries, offering visitors a glimpse into the past with its meticulously detailed buildings. The addition of a sixties theme adds a fun twist, making it an engaging experience for all ages. While some areas may need maintenance, the overall ambiance remains delightful, with plenty of activities for families to enjoy.

Enjoyable experience! Despite a busy day, the friendly and English-speaking staff made our visit pleasant. We reserved for 4 hours, providing ample time tO explore the activities. However, navigating stairs posed a challenge, especially for my mother-in-law, making it less accessible. The cleanliness of washrooms, showers, and lockers stood out positively. Dont worry about parking your car as there are enough plots for everyone. In unfavorable weather, Sparkx Hasselt is a great indoor option. Overall, a 4-star experience. Thank you, Team Sparkx Hasselt!

Fun Teambuilding Experience at Sparkx Hasselt We had a fantastic teambuilding day at Sparkx Hasselt. The attractions were enjoyable and offered just the right level of challenge. While it may not feature the very latest high-tech equipment, it’s definitely a great spot for a fun day out with colleagues or friends. Recommended for group activities!

Vey fun place to visit with kids. When it's calm inside, 2 hours is enough to do all the activities.
Frederik G — Google review
first of all, wow! I love the location as I go there very often, but Sparkx gives me many more reasons to go! with all honesty, there is (always) room for fixes when it comes to tech, but it's currently in a testing phase, so I don't mind that much! the fixes are minor in my opinion. it was a very fun experience. highly recommend to go for 4 hours if you want to try everything! 2 hours won't be enough for the whole experience. I'm very impressed, so I'm getting myself a season pass next time I jump in. as an everyday runner, I love to do some other sports every now and then. Sparkx makes that possible at one place at a time! love it. some things are intense so you'll get sweaty here and there. they have a healthy restaurant serving smoothies, salads, poke bowl-ish dishes (if i remember correctly) fruits, and wraps! they are veggie friendly (vegan not quite sure yet, since I haven't checked it thoroughly, but I believe the allergies/ingredients were listed on their menu's) they serve beverages such as soda's, waters and alcohol. there are a couple vending machines with drinks so if you get thirsty, (bet you will!!) you won't have to go all the way back unless you're hungry. they have a small merch shop too! last but not least, this place has lockers, changing rooms, restrooms and showers. :)

What a nice experience at Jumpsquare! Even though it is a bit on the pricy side, 38 euros for 90 mins jumping for 2, you will forget about it as soon as you enter the arena. So many possibilities here, from a ninja speed course to a sumo wrestling fight to a huge air bag to some ball games, everything is possible here. I came with my nephew and I was the oldest on the trampolines but that doesn’t matter, it is for all ages. Included in the price is a pair of anti-slip branded socks. Would come back here!
