Gasometer in Essen, Germany is a former gas holder that has been repurposed into an impressive exhibition space and event venue. Standing at 117 meters tall, it offers stunning panoramic views of the city. Visitors can enjoy a variety of exhibits, including photography displays featuring wildlife and nature captured by talented photographers. The current exhibit showcases captivating images from experienced photographers, set against the unique backdrop of the Gasometer itself.
Visited the 'Planet Ocean' exhibition. Great photography and storytelling about the beauty of the ocean and how human exploitation challenges its natural landscape. Beautiful and sad at the same time.
Chillino C — Google review
Beautiful pictures and interesting discussion points for the environment. The two sensory activities were great. The noise of nature and the projected under the ocean was cool. I would recommend to go, but I would not be back until there is a new exhibition. There is a nice view point from the roof as well. You can buy tickets at the front entrance.
Phil — Google review
Great day out to visit the exhibition about Oceans of Planet Earth. You can claim the 120m high tower using stairs or take the lift. From up there you have a magnificent view. Next to this great attraction is also a climbing forest where you can be Tarzan.
Michael Z — Google review
Went to the ‘Ocean Planet’ exhibit. Very impressive photos in a impressive building.
Debby L — Google review
We saw the exhibition Planet Ocean. It was very exciting, very interesting. Large pictures of previously unknown sea creatures, at least unknown to me. Very good for families as well, very interesting for little kids. On the third floor of the exhibition, there is a large projection of sea creatures, which was quite interesting. We also used the audio guides, which were quite helpful. And I find the entry fee was really quite cheap compared to similar exhibitions of the same quality.
Sven G — Google review
Great place to visit. All about aquatic animals, fishing and the environment impacts. It's really fascinating. The top level is like cinema. There are cushions on the floor, you can lie on that and look at the reflection of the video on the top. This will give you a good understanding of what is happening with the fishing and the environment.
Charles R — Google review
The Planet Ocean exhibition is extensive and very interesting. Many large photo displays and some video. There was a 30 minute wait for the Sounds From the Ocean Floor audio experience, which was interesting, but not worth the wait to me. The projection on the third floor is stunning but you must allow at least half an hour to really get to appreciate it. From there, you can take the elevator to the roof for an amazing view.
Sascha F — Google review
Just for the building alone it's worth it to visit. You can take the elevator (or the stairs) all the way to the top, where you have an amazing view of the surrounding areas. The exhibit inside changes every few months so there is usually a reason to visit more than once a year. I saw the underwater exhibit and it was well worth it. Great photographs, plenty of space between the giant pictures, well visited but still not crowded. The highlight was on the top floor where you could lay down on a pillow and watch creatures swim above you.

LEGOLAND Discovery Centre Oberhausen is a thrilling indoor theme park designed for kids up to 10 years old. With two rides and ten play zones, children can immerse themselves in the world of LEGO, building and playing with over forty million bricks. The Miniland exhibit showcases famous landmarks from the Rhine and Ruhr regions constructed entirely from LEGO bricks. Additionally, visitors can enjoy 4D movies with special effects at the cinema.
The two ladies at the reception were very respectful eventhough we, adults without children, were not allowed to visit. Only adults with kids were allowed. However, they told us that once a while there is an opportunity for adults to visit the visum and enjoy themselves.
Ramata S — Google review
A great place for children, but as an adult, I absolutely loved the experience, a definite must visit for lego fans! I loved watching the various displays and I liked how the establishment was divided into separate areas with their own theme. There are two enjoyable rides, a movie theater, a decently sized indoor playground, and various areas to play around with Lego. There's also a nicely stocked cafeteria and spacious eating area. The only slight disappointment for me was that I felt there should have been some sort of discount at the Lego store in LEGOLAND for those who visited. The prices were the same as any other lego store.
Kimberly M — Google review
We got tickets to Legoland from our hotel as part of their package. We arrived there first thing at the opening so it was not that crowded. The center is divided in a couple of areas each with their own theme. There are two big rides, a movie theater a small indoor playground and lots of areas to play around with Lego. The highlight to us was the ride where you shoot and the 4D movie theater. There seem to be a couple different movies being shown (we saw 3 distinct ones) so it’s worth watching multiple. Our favorite was the Lego City Action one. A shame there was none of the Lego Disney princesses which is my daughters favorite. We did notice that around 12 the crowd was a lot more noticeable so that was also a sign for us to leave. The store connected to it was definitley not cheap so I’d rather buy Lego when there is discount.
Akil K — Google review
⭐☆☆☆☆ Very disappointing experience. We arrived at LEGOLAND Discovery Centre Oberhausen, but couldn’t get in because it was overbooked. There was no clear information on the website about this, so we came all the way for nothing. At least they should update the website or show ticket availability properly
S P — Google review
Really fun time had with the family here. Lots of hands on things to do for the kids and Big kids like me in the family. 2 small rides inside too.
James S — Google review
Beautiful experience for children but also for adults, worth it for lego game fans!
Juhos A — Google review
Nice place for kids but bit overpriced in my opinion
Karol K — Google review
Lego is in every country and they all differ slightly given the specifics of the country. The kids have fun here, there is also a Lego train that you ride and shoot with a laser. All locations are divided into Lego series. At the entrance, we were given a card on which we need to put a stamp on each location, as a result, when everything goes through, you just give this leaflet at the checkout and that's it. Stupid as for me, the children go through this quest with seals, but in the end there is no prize, somehow strange. The children's center should leave positive emotions at the end. Especially lego, but there is no such thing. If a child has a birthday, then he has neither a bonus nor a gift from Lego, nothing, although it would be possible if every day, like in other children's centers, to make mini gifts. And here for a birthday, even the entrance is paid. To summarize, it is worth going there with children, but the question is the age of the child. There are good locations. I liked train laser shooting games. Attractions from Harry Potter, 4d movie.

Aquarium
Zoos & Aquariums
SEA LIFE Oberhausen is a family-friendly aquarium with over 5,000 marine creatures housed in tanks totaling two million liters of water. The main highlight is the largest shark tank in Germany, featuring black tip reef sharks and rays visible from an underwater tunnel. A new turtle exhibit opened in 2017, offering insights into different species' habitats, evolution, diet, and behavior. Located just a short drive from downtown Essen, it's a perfect stop for families or anyone interested in marine life.
A pleasant experience to do alone or with your family. The kids love it, there is an activity for them where they are given a map and have to stamp the various areas they pass through during the visit. Super clean. Lots of interaction, and assistants explain each animal area. Clean and large bathrooms. There are several areas to sit in the middle of the route. You will find a very cute shop at the end. There are also some activities at the end with virtual glasses. And there is a smoking area for those interested. All the staff were super friendly.
Maria P — Google review
A really good place with a lot of aquatic life in both flora and fauna. The whole place was very well maintained and it was a good experience going through the entire setup. Fantastic place to bring kids. The staff personnel were quite helpful and friendly. I would highly recommend it.
SACHIT V — Google review
Was genuinely excited to take our visitors (with a 6 yo child) to this place. We have been to Aqua Zoo in Düsseldorf and was really amazed. So we had high expectations here since it's an international franchise. Cons: - Price of the tickets were a bit more expensive to our liking, considering that a lot of the exhibitions were closed. No otters, no penguins, no seals. - Place could use some sprucing up. Everything felt old. Ambience was depressing, from start to finish. Good thing my niece still appreciated seeing the fish, but the adults clearly saw what was lacking. - Very crowded on a random weekend. I didn't see staff on standby inside to usher people through and engage kids. They could have compensated with the lack of exhibitions with engaged staff that actually talk to the kids. - Limited to vending machines for after snacks options. - I downloaded the app and it was very laggy. Couldn't even identify the fishes properly and were giving wrong data. Very misleading and a waste of time. - No signal throughout the exhibition. It's 2025 folks. - No locker rooms. Prams were left randomly scattered to the side of the reception. Pros: - Staff at front desk seemed to be nice. Although they were clearly exhausted already by 14:00. - They set up some Halloween decoration and were giving away some Haribo. There were stamp stations across the place, but failed in execution as some of them were already missing the stamps. - Very clean bathrooms. - They had a friendly mascot waiting at the end to take photos with. - Nice quality selection of souvenirs, but limited choices. Expensive but that is to be expected. - I heard a staff member inside talking about mussels, it's nice to also have these educational stuff around places like these. Overall, I'm not coming back. I would rather go to Aquazoo or even Krefeld Zoo to see more variety of animals.
K. D — Google review
I really liked it, especially the Animal Crossing event was fun. Generally the atmosphere was relaxing however it can be packed with people in some areas. I went there at around 4pm and a lot of kids were running around but only at the beginning. Overall it was fun and a wonderful experience.
Mai T — Google review
I really enjoyed my trip here. It's definitely a great place for children but I was visiting a friend and as an adult, I had a great time! Everything is well maintained and beautifully set up. The clean and large bathrooms were a nice surprise as usually in such establishments where lots of children are involved, things can become messy quickly. It should be noted that the staff were very helpful and friendly and even spoke in English when they realised I was an English speaker. I would highly recommend a visit and do be sure to check out the cute shop at the end.
Kimberly M — Google review
We got tickets to Sea Life as part of our hotel stay package. It’s a decent sized aquarium where you walk along a fixed course to see the fish. For the kids there was an Animal Crossing stamp tour which adds a bit of extra excitement to kids running around. Some areas did tend to get crowded but at the entrance they do regulate the number of people that get in at intervals. There are some areas where you’re allowed to touch things which was a fun addition. We did see some people arrive that did not book tickets in advance who got turned around at the entrance because the day was fully booked, so be careful of that.
Akil K — Google review
We really enjoyed the visit with our baby, I recommend buying tickets early!
Veronica C — Google review
Nice place specially for kids, there were a couple of sections closed due to maintenance but still nice place and very close to Westfield centro shopping mall. Recommendation park your car for free in Westfield centro and walk 5 mins to sea life. Otherwise you will need to pay for parking close to sea life

AQUApark Oberhausen GmbH is a unique water park that pays tribute to the city's mining heritage with its industrial-themed design. First time visit on 08/08/25. Very enjoyable. Helpful staff. Many people but still plenty of space. Very safety conscious lifeguards. Good to see parents being spoken to for leaving their small kids alone! Only takes a few seconds for a tragedy!

A very nice tropical pool in itself, however having based our expectations on the website we felt a little underwhelmed. The temperature inside the walking areas was quite cold with open roof
Marc D — Google review
Great spot for fun and relaxation! The water park in Oberhausen has two thrilling tunnel slides that are definitely worth trying. There are also several different pools to explore, each offering a unique experience. Overall, it’s a fantastic place …whether you’re planning a fun date or just hanging out with friends.

It was very nice, The water temperature is moderate. Toilet and shower was clean. Beter to buy tickets online. Allow to take some snacks for kids.

Absolutely fun!! There were four slides in total, and three different swimming pools. Definitely worth the money!

The Stage Metronom Theater - Theater am CentrO is an outstanding venue to enjoy plays or musicals. Every seat provides a superb view of the stage, and the sound quality is excellent. The theater boasts four bar areas, where you can even pre-order drinks for the intermission. The only downside is that there was a queue due to just one person serving snacks. Despite this minor inconvenience, it comes highly recommended as a fantastic venue.

Excellent musical location. Spacious, quick lines for drinks and toilets and clean and modern.

Great venue for musicals. Saw Tarzan here which was a great production and the space this venue offers adds to the whole show. It is weird how you can seemingly can just walk in without anybody checking your ticket. Almost every seat has a great view of the stage. Enough barthrooms are offered, and the drinks/snacks are offered efficiently.
Arvid B — Google review
It's a perfect place for such popular musicals like Tanz der Vampire etc. Big scene, great view from all seats, amazing and breathtaking sound and lighting. Very nice security speaking Deutsch and English, they'll show you how to get to your place. Big bar and nice shop with merchandise :)

Fantastic venue to watch a play or musical, all seating offers an excellent view of the stage and the sound was superb. There are four bar areas and you were able to pre-order the drinks for the intermission. Only issue was that there was just one person serving snacks which meant there was a que. Other than that I highly recommend coming here, we saw Bat Out of Hell which was terrific even though I am not a fan of Meatloaf.

The LUDWIGGALERIE, situated in Oberhausen Castle, is a renowned art gallery known for its diverse and impressive collection of ancient and contemporary artworks. The castle itself, built in the neoclassical style with an appealing pink hue, dates back to the second and thirteenth century. Operated by the Ludwig Art Foundation since the 1980s, this museum showcases a variety of artistic forms such as drawings, photographs, and caricatures.
I went to the Ludwiggalerie Oberhausen Castle to visit the exhibition of the famous German artist (cartoonist, comedian, film director, actor and writer). Visiting this exhibition was a privilege. Also, the surrounding area (such as Kaisergarten) of Oberhausen Castle is a great area to walk/cycle, along the Rhine-Herne Canal, also for leisure activities, including a free animal enclosure. Especially walk across the bridge sculpture “Slinky Springs to Fame” over the Rhine-Herne Canal.
Neil R — Google review
Definitely worth a visit, place of interest with interesting exhibitions
Carol C — Google review
A good place for a gallery. But on a holiday you might find it’s hard to get a parking space nearby. Because many family with kids would go to the park here.

It's a very colorful bridge inside a public park. It right above the Rhein-Herne canal. You can use it to cross to the other side of the open park where there are a lot of activities like outdoor yoga, cycling, jogging, kids activities or just sitting and relaxing. There are some kiosk for water, ice cream and quick snacks or drinks. There are 2 huge restaurants as well. Entrance is free.

Quite a sight to behold! Visited after dusk, and the lights are really pretty. It felt a little soft when walking on it, which was really nice. Also kinda bouncy, which when named after a slinky isn't too surprising.

Zauberlehrling, also known as The Sorcerer's Apprentice, is a remarkable sculpture located in Geholzgarten Ripshorst park. Created by the Berlin-based art collective Inges Idee, this massive 35-meter electric pylon is designed to resemble a dynamic dancing pose. Inspired by Goethe's poem, the sculpture offers a unique experience as it appears different from various angles, creating an illusion of movement.
This artwork made me very happy. I went there twice.

I love pylons, and this is certainly an interesting pylon! There's also a bendy bridge, but I mainly went for the pylon. Plenty of places to park nearby and there's also a café and some toilets near the car park. Only drawback was the smell of poo near the pylon. There's some sort sewage treatment plant which seems to discharge smelly water into a ditch alongside the fields.

Very rude and impolite staff I was just got schocked with their personality I asked the girl at the cash to buy some tickets and she asked my son if he needs socks or not and he said yes Before I do the payment snd get the socks I cancelled but the cashier told that I must geot that and there is no cancellation in their crazy sysyem One star is a lot They are very rude and impolite

Very nice. A lot of jumping stations. At the entrance are lockers (shoes ok, but only a small backpack). Toilets are ok. Some small refreshments are available as well. Due to COVID, you have to book timeslot in advance. 60 minutes for addults or 90 minutes for kids is enough. Parking is just by the entrance, apx 2€.

Amazing place for kids to let off steam. Friendly staff and very quiet on weekdays. Catering could use some work, but perhaps it's better on busy days.

Movie theater
Lichtburg-Filmpalast is a modern and clean cinema that offers fair prices for new releases. It is known for its comfortable seating, including double "cuddle" seats for couples. The theater provides 3D screenings and shows movies in their original English language on Mondays, making it a great option for those with limited German proficiency. While the snack and drink prices are considered expensive, the friendly staff ensures a good overall experience.
As always really good service good prices and an awesome experience
Marc G — Google review
Nice, clean, modern movie house with double "cuddle" very comfortable seats for couples. Show films on Monday night at 19-30 in original English language which is great if your German is a bit dodgy 😊 snacks and drinks devilishly expensive 🫣
Nick K — Google review
Pretty much all new releases and basically the only remaining cinema with fair prices. They also provide 3D and show one movie in its original English language on Mondays. Young and friendly team, which also sells Nachos, Popcorn, Softdrinks, beer, popsicles etc. Only downside: No A/C - it's always very warm in there and during the summer you're sweating more than you can drink.
World A — Google review
Pretty nice local movie theater. Price is fair and staff friendly. Programmation is poor and often late compared to bigger cinemas though.

The park features open meadows and woodlands surrounding Haus Ripshorst, a historic manor dating back to the 1300s. This area serves as an information center for Escher Landschaftspark, offering a mix of natural spaces and repurposed industrial facilities in the river valley.

Museum
Located near the Gasometer and CentrO, Bunkermuseum Oberhausen is a unique attraction housed in an above-ground bunker from World War II. The lower levels remain unchanged since the war's end, while modern extensions were added in 2001. The museum hosts temporary exhibitions on contemporary history and art. Although descriptions are only available in German, visitors can explore the impressive space for free on Wednesdays and Sundays.
An interesting museum, giving an insight into the air war over Europe during WW2. Unfortunately everything is in German so difficult to understand unless you can speak German. Worth a visit for the atmosphere down there.
John W — Google review
Open Wed/Sun, no booking required and free entry. Almost entirely preserved since last use in WW2. Very eerie walking along the corridor and into the rooms. There was just ourselves and two others so we had whole place to ourselves. Just a great place to visit
Gary C — Google review
The Bunkermuseum is highly underrated museum in the Ruhr area. The former air raid shelter from 1942 is an impressive space to discover. Admission is free. Yet it is only open on Wednesdays and Sundays. A place not to miss when you are in the Ruhr area. It is also a very unusual photo spot.
Philipp S — Google review
Free entrance no fees needed This place will give you the feeling of the 1945, you will help you to imagine how was it difficult during the war wide 2 You will see how the structure is solid and it’s safe with the life support requirement for that time.
Eyhab N — Google review
Small museum but worth it for enthusiasts who like to know about bunkers at WW 2 times..

Well maintenance and historical significance
Todoo L — Google review
It’s nice to see. It took me around 30 mins to look around. The descriptions are only in german and there is no connection inside the bunker. It can be hard for no german speaker. I had to take pictures of the description and translate them each time with google translate. You have to download the languages you want to translate in since you cannot do it otherwise without connection. It’s a bit annoying but otherwise it was great. It’s free but far from anything else.

The Rheinisches Industriemuseum, also known as the LVR Industrial Museum, offers a truthful and impressive insight into the challenging working conditions of a zinc factory. The well-maintained exhibition allows visitors to immerse themselves in the history of industrial labor. Despite some feedback about the lack of a clear narrative thread, the exhibits are well-described and presented, making it an informative experience for those with limited knowledge of technology.
(Translated by Google) We really enjoyed the exhibition in the LVR Industrial Museum. It allows, in our opinion, a truthful, impressive insight into the difficult circumstances in which the workers worked in this zinc factory. The exhibition is very well maintained! If you have trouble walking or standing, you can sit on the many benches and watch the video images. We spent many hours in this museum. Thanks! Danke!

Building of old industry in Germany. Interesting place to visit
Ryan N — Google review
(Translated by Google) Well-intentioned exhibition, but the recognizable common thread was missing. Too often you felt lost, literally disoriented. Either we were looking for clear explanations of the exhibits or we were looking for the right way through the exhibition.
