Diósgyőr Castle, located at the foot of the Bukk Mountains just 8 kilometers from Miskolc, is a reconstructed medieval fortress that offers a captivating journey into Hungary's medieval history. The castle boasts interactive exhibits and an arena for jousts and reenactments, providing visitors with an immersive experience. Its picturesque setting amidst lush forests adds to its allure, making it a historical gem worth exploring.
Beautiful castle with an incredible feel. What made this worth the visit was the professional tour guide who played the part in traditional Knight costume. He delivered a knowledgeable brief passionately and answered questions thoroughly. Great day out! Looking forward to visiting when the jousting and other entertainment is on in the future!
Jason P — Google review
Diósgyőr Castle looks stunning and majestic even from the outside. Unfortunately, it's not possible to go inside at the moment due to ongoing renovations. Still, I believe once it's fully restored, it will be an absolute gem!
Daniel K — Google review
This is one of the best historical place especially in Miskolc. The facilities are really great even for people having disabilities can enter to the castle. At some times, there are theatrical and historical attraction. The information of castle history given in touch screen in various languages. Tourists from all over the world are really recommended to visit this place.
Ghulam K — Google review
The catle with its expositions are in very good conditions offering a lot of facts and subjects well organized in rooms which are every of them focusing on some specific part of activity. Nice peace of history. Very professional staff. Highly recommend.

If you're in the Miskolc area this is definitely worth a visit. It's one of the nicest castles I've seen in Hungary; this medieval castle was a favourite holiday residence of Hungarian kings and queens. The castle was renovated between April 2012 and 2014 and instead of a historic castle ruin, visitors can now visit an old, remodeled castle. The castle features a special feature of informal cognition; the visitors can experience the atmosphere of the medieval castle freely, trying all of the things. In addition to the interactive content, reenactors dressed in timeless outfits, as well as spaces on the ground floor that showcase everyday life, contribute to the atmosphere. As a quick reference for the origin of the name: Dió means walnut, referring to the abundant walnut trees in the area. Győr is an archaic version of the word gyűrű, meaning "ring". It probably refers to the rounded shape of the first castle erected on the hill. The first castle was probably built in the 12th century, but destroyed during the Mongol invasion. The castle that stands today was most likely erected in the times of King Béla IV, in the 13th century. The castle had its prime during the reign of Louis I (Louis the Great). In 1364 the nearby town Miskolc was annexed to the Diósgyőr estate. Diósgyőr lost some of its importance when the political union between Hungary and Poland ended. In 1596, the Ottomans occupied the area; Diósgyőr remained under Turkish occupation, ruled by the Pasha of Eger until 1687, when this part of the country was freed from Turkish rule. By this time the castle lost all of its military importance.

We visited during a reenactment, and it was a blast. The schedule we found of events was not followed that I could tell, and with the children under four, that can be a challenge. The food was terrific and the events were fun. The area where the held most events were too crowded. Nevertheless we had fun, as we said saw knights and the various displays in the castle. The stairs up to the towers were treacherous...haha, but the view was worth it (carrying kids up the tower was not).
Dale P — Google review
Modern renovations, looks medieval and also modern and stable. The inside rooms are brilliant and from the rooftop all the city is visible. Interactive screens with diverse games inside, including a photography maker machine that sends you a postcard with your personal photo on e-mail on the spot. Worth the ticket!
Ade K — Google review
Hello travelers! A nice place for spending some relaxing time! You can find access for people with disabilities and some parking place close to the entrance! Also a nice view! Enjoy 😉

Anna Cave, located below the gardens of Palota Hotel in Lillafured, is a unique limestone cave with striking stalactites and stalagmites. Unlike other caves, its cavities were not carved by water but formed with rock. The cave system features numerous halls of limestone formations and small tunnels, making it more than just a typical cave full of rock formations. Visitors can enjoy a lovely view near the entrance and explore interesting rooms within the cave.
Great place for wandering the paths and watching the waterfall flow. The cave was interesting but unfortunately tour was entirely in Hungarian so a lot of the information provided was lost. Just the same we recommend the experience!
NYPTBLUE O — Google review
A beautiful and not large cave located in an amazing area Lillafured. You can enter only during specified hours with a guided tour. The duration of the tour is less than half an hour. A beautiful and special place.
Eddy T — Google review
Very beautiful place and absolutely worth visiting. This cave is so impressive! All the surroundings and Palota Hotel are just amazing. If you have a dilemma, which cave to visit (St Istvan or Anna; with Miskolc Pass is one for free) then my advice is that you have to visit both! They are absolutely worth it!
Gunnar S — Google review
They spoke English when selling the tickets, but during the tour, not a single word was in English—except at the very end, when the guide just said, “Look there, in the cave, there’s a leaf.” Not very informative or helpful for non-hungarian speakers. At least we had a A4 sheet with some informations. It lasted only 30min
Anaïs C — Google review
A small but interesting set of caves with beautiful limestone features. The tour guide gave a very good explanation and was entertaining!
Bogi S — Google review
Wonderfull place if you take the road through the mountains, you will have the conplete experiance, magic place, something really special for a free day...
Kleb J — Google review
Half an hour of guided tour of the cave. Quite nice and warm inside the cave.
Rajesh R — Google review
They don't provide tours or audio in english. Only 2 pieces of paper with a bit of information (after the tour you have to return it). You can't really read it because inside is dark and you can't use a torch. With 32 people inside we couldn't enjoy the tour at all. We literally couldn't fit inside the cave, we spent most of time in passages, once we enter the chamber the light was off. 30 min we spent chasing the group. The cave is too small for 32 people. It was a big disappointment for us. If you don't understand Hungarian then I don't recommend you to visit this place. Waste of money and time.

Lillafüred State Forest Railway Adminisztraciò, originally an industrial narrow-gauge railway built in the 1910s to transport lumber from the Bukk Mountains to Miskolc, now serves as a popular tourist attraction from May to September. The train journey offers picturesque mountain views as it travels through gorges and abrupt drops.
This is not the correct Google location. We came here and there’s no where to board the train. For Miskolc station, search according to the attached. I’m waiting to board the train now. And near the attached location, there’s a designated parking about 200m behind the train station.

I would like to leave here some info related to this train, maybe it helps. We took the train this month, April, 2025, therefor the info is updated: - tickets: you can buy them from the main station, on Dorottya street, as there is a Touristic info center open on the weekends, as well, and you can pay with credit card. You can buy them also directly from the train, but in this case you will need cash. Very important, I think, it is the fact that you have to buy the tickets only on the day of the travel (you cannot buy them in advance). You can get on the train anytime, as the tickets are not hour-related. - the departure station is on Dorottya street, very close to this Info center - the train schedule is available on their website, where they keep it updated - at Lillafüred stop you can visit the waterfall, the Suspended gardens, the Hamori lake, and the caves nearby. The Palota hotel is there as well, and you can take a walk through the garden around the hotel. Food and drinks are available in the area. There is a toilet too, a very “old” one, but at least there is one (it works with cash, coins, to be more specific, 200HUF) 😁 I recommend to have cash with you, anyways.
Diana-Lavinia T — Google review
It's an amazing place with lovely lake and green lush hills. You should prepare a light tracking before going there, that way you'll be able to truly enjoy the trails and tracks through the hills. Most of the trails are marked.
Ishtiaque A — Google review
If you or your kids like trains (mine are obsessed), than you cannot go wrong. The longer the better! The trip to Garadna is rather uneventful with only a small snack area and a couple of trail heads, but a fun overall experience.
Dale P — Google review
Going by some of the reviews, I think there is much misunderstanding about this railway & the map pinpoint which is understandable. Maybe this might help someone... check days & times online that it runs. If you are a tourist & new to the area, find Végéllomás Bistro on Google maps (Végéllomás means "end station" or "terminus" in Hungarian) & take tram 1 from Miskolc to the Bistro - tram stop "LAEV" is right outside it. (Download Mobiljegy to get a tram ticket or tap on tram drivers door inside tram to pay cash) The train station & ticket office for the Railway is next door to the Bistro. In the ticket office they speak English & German. It is no problem to get a ticket. The train ride is absolutely brilliant. Sit on the right side of the train if you can. Takes you through the outskirts of Diósgyör & winds its way through the forest, over a large bridge & through a tunnel up to Lillafüred. The train takes 30 minutes to reach Lillafüred. Plenty to do once you get there. See the waterfall, the hanging gardens of the palace then go and row a boat out into the loch. Wonderful scenery. On the way back, Végéllomás Bistro is well worth a stop for an evening meal - it is Michelin recommended & fairly priced with nice outdoor terrace! 😊

Miskolc Zoo, located near Diosgyor, is the oldest zoo in Hungary, dating back to King Louis' royal menagerie in the 14th century. The zoo houses a variety of local and exotic animals from Asia, Australia, North America, South America and Africa. Visitors can see brown bears, wildcats, buffalos as well as kangaroos, kookaburras, racoons and many more.
Beautiful zoo park, but there's one big issue if you go there with a stroller or if you're on a wheelchair. The path is done only at the beginning and then the misery starts 😬. They should really do something with the paths in the park because of you're not able to walk you gonna have a problem...
Peter Ž — Google review
Large zoo. A bit old infrastructure. Some of the animals seemed neglected (one of daniels with an open head wound). Neglected, pothole-ridden access road. I recommend buying a Miskolc pass which gives you possibility of entrance to additional attractions around.
Paweł G — Google review
We visited this nice small ZOO on 5.6.2024. That day (wednesday) the ZOO was almost empty, so we could enjoy our special moments with the animals. Most of the animals are used to people and they come very close to you. It is very tempting to touch them (Please, do not do it!) :-) You can see there parrots, lamas, farm animals, but also monkeys, meerkats, bears, jaguars, tigers, lions and more! There is a small shop with ice cream etc. The old man serving people there could speak English and even some Czech words. It was very nice. It is true that the area needs more financial support but it's still worth spending free time there... so I hope you will visit this ZOO after reading my review and support them. :-) If you are accommodated in Miskolctapolca, take bus 20 / 20A, get off the bus in the center and take the tram 1V and get off at the last station Felsö Majláth. From there you can take ZOO bus but be sure to check the timetable because it is not a regular bus. We walked up the hill to the ZOO from the station and then back. It was a nice (cca 40-minute) walk on the outskirts of Miskolc. We bought 24-hour Miskolc pass tourist card (2x 7990 HUF) which includes ZOO entry and public transport (and many more free services and discounts).
Jana Š — Google review
The park is nice and big but there's some enclosures that seem to be way too small for the animals crowded inside them while others are empty.
Zoltán B — Google review
Very nice zoo! Lots of animals. But there were animals that had a cage way too small. Please, get a bigger bird cage. We were alone, which is both sad and happy. Because I want to gatekeep this place but I also want the animals to have nicer cages
נועם ה — Google review
Nice clean place enjoyable environment. Easy guide through the map. Wide range of animals kept clean and looked healthy I was happy to see that. There is some new additions since my last visit I will always return. Staff polite and friendly. You can buy animal food at the entrance in the gift shop. 😊
T D — Google review
We were there during a hot summer day but the most of the zoo parts are covered by shadow from trees. A good trip for kids (2 years+).
Dominik V — Google review
Well, it was the first time going to the zoo (I know 😔). I was there for about an hour and some minutes. The walk up? Beautiful and took about 15 minutes from the trolley stop. I don't know how much you guys pay cause I had bought the Miskolc tourist pass/card thingie. I don't know how to compare this zoo as it was my first ever visit. It was okay. I was heart broken by the tigers (honestly, I was an emotional wreak), the bears were cute (of course) but the staff was not really smiley smiley (does it make sense?) but I sort of enjoyed it

Wooden Church in Miskolc is a newer structure than it appears, having been completed in 1999 to replace its predecessor destroyed by fire. The church has an interesting history, with the original wooden church dating back to the 18th century. It was rebuilt after being destroyed by fire and is now a popular spot for visitors, known for its ornate carvings and picturesque exterior.
The Wooden Church in Miskolc is a hidden gem that offers a beautiful blend of history and tranquility. Nestled in the heart of the city, this charming church boasts stunning wooden architecture with intricate carvings and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. The craftsmanship is exceptional, reflecting traditional Hungarian design.

Beautiful wooden church rebuild after it's late 90s destruction. Located at the end of central historical zone, surrounded by cemetery. Unfortunately it wasn't open when I was around.
Marek K — Google review
Interesting Scandinavian styled wooden church with a cemetery partly hidden on the hillside. Wooden, wooden..., but the exact translation in my opinion and according to local building technologies would be: Plank Church as a simplifying nickname for opposing the richly carved wood used here. The church has a long history packed with some fire disasters, but was always rebuilt. Attended here for a wedding in a special spiritual and uplifting atmosphere. Ceremonial service, Staff and Priest was absolutely great.

The Gothic Protestant Church of Avas, the oldest monument in Miskolc, is located on the lower slopes of Avas Hill in the city center. Originally founded in the 13th century, this Romanesque structure underwent expansions and was transformed into a late-Gothic German-style hall church during the 15th century. Unfortunately, it lost its roof during the Ottoman occupation in 1544.
Unbelievably beautiful and peaceful place
Logogogo L — Google review
(Translated by Google) People have mixed feelings when they enter the church, because based on the exterior features and the height, they envision a cross vault in front of them, compared to this they see a closed wooden coffered ceiling, which for me is a bit foreign to this church. Inevitably, one thinks that they wish they had paid the tax to the Turks and then they would not burn down the iconic building of Miskolc. The thick walls do not fit into the interior of the church either, and the fact that the last two elements of the sanctuary were placed in front of the Gothic window is very unattractive. However, the guided tour was very detailed and informative.

Very good acoustics, clear vision of the stage, pleasant space, well maintained. Saw a very engaging production of Molière's Don Juan, though I speak no Hungarian. I went with a group of Roma pupils of Dr Ambedkar High School in Miskolc and was so impressed by the way they were treated, meeting the cast and having a very lively and thoughtful exchange with them about the production - I was proud of the students.

(Translated by Google) We were given a small guided tour, which we didn't have to pay for separately. I'm glad we took the opportunity, we gained a lot of information, not only about Otto Herman, but also about Lillafüred. A neat little cottage, with 2 rooms, and a wonderful little garden.

(Translated by Google) Ottó Herman built this small house as a holiday home, which today functions as a memorial house. We can get a glimpse into the scientist's life and spend time with his objects, read about his work and family life. We can find it next to the walkway leading to the chairlift. (Translated by Google) Small, but very good exhibition! Recommended for viewing! It's in a pretty hidden place, but it's worth looking for. On a human scale, we can get to know Herman Otto almost in his ordinary nature. (Original) Pici, de nagyon jó kiállítás! Ajánlom megtekintésre! Eléggé eldugott helyen van, de megéri megkeresni. Emberléptékű, Herman Ottót is szinte a hétköznapi mivoltában ismerhetjük meg.

(Translated by Google) At first, all I knew about Otto Herman was that there was a school in Tatabánya. However, the discount was indicated on our MiskolcPass card as a place to visit. Once we're here, in Lilafüred, let's go inside. The reception was even better than expected. In addition to the displayed souvenirs, we were also given an impromptu guided tour. And it turned out that Jászai Mari was not just a theater in Tatabánya, but they had something to do with each other. You could admire their letters to each other. These people wrote so beautifully, and this is not only about the guests, but also about giving respect to each other. I was enriched by an experience. If you go there, don't miss it (Original) Herman Ottóról annyit tudtam eleinte, hogy egy iskola Tatabányán.

The Ancient Blast Furnace, also known as the Massa Museum, is a significant historical site in Hungary that showcases the century-old iron-making history of the Hamor area. The monument resembles a Mayan archaeological site and offers a unique atmosphere. Although the railroad tracks have been removed, it remains an intriguing destination for visitors interested in narrow gauge railways. The site provides a beautiful panorama and is well worth a visit as part of your trip to Miskolc.
Just an ancient cave, nothing special. The path upsters is more interesting.

It's a very nice place. But I like climbing to the mountain.

Very atmospheric place! It would be really nice if railroad tracks were also in place. But they are removed, and seems like nobody is interested in narrow gauge railways. But they are so cool.
Vladimir — Google review
Very nice piece of history. Well worth a visit as part of your trip here. You can get off the train, spend thirty minutes, and get back on the return train.

Miskolctapolcai Adventure Park is a fantastic destination for thrill-seekers and families alike. With its diverse tree wire climbing courses, which are color-coded to cater to various skill levels, there's something for everyone looking to push their limits. Visitors have praised the safety measures in place, noting that even with just one staff member on duty, they provide attentive guidance and ensure a secure experience.
The tree wire climbing course is great and inexpensive fun. There are three colour coded areas for all abilities. The barlong (cave) swimming pools and complex is great for all the family, definitely worth a visit if you are staying in the area. Lots of free parking close by too which is an added bonus.

(Translated by Google) I would like to dispel misconceptions about the safety of the adventure park. Five of us arrived and five of us left🙂 We went on the red track and it was completely safe. The diagonally placed stops enhance the experience. It is true that there is only one staff member, but they were attentive, kind and helpful. They thoroughly explained everything you need for a safe adventure🙂 I highly recommend the park to anyone who would like to step out of their comfort zone.
