Botanical garden
Heritage Museums & Gardens in Sandwich is a must-visit destination with its expansive rhododendron gardens and three galleries showcasing diverse collections. The largest garden in Southern New England, it also houses American cultural artifacts and hosts changing exhibits like the recent New England Impressionists Exhibit. With nature trails, a nature playground for kids, and a Shaker-style Round Barn displaying 40 antique autos, there's something for everyone to enjoy.
The most amazing thing about this museum is the unique combination of a world-class antique car exhibition and a beautiful botanical garden with winding paths and hidden mazes. Getting there isn’t exactly easy — it took us nearly 40 minutes from Barnstable, and at times it felt like we might be going the wrong way. But don’t worry — just trust your GPS and keep going. The drive and the ticket price are absolutely worth it. If you start your exploration by walking clockwise, you’ll step straight into the past — the antique automobile collection is one of the best I’ve ever seen. Many of the cars are still in working condition, and through the glass you can even peek into the restoration garage where the magic happens. After that, you’ll enter the vast botanical gardens. The space is stunning — the landscape is thoughtfully maintained, and the diversity of plants is truly impressive. I’ve visited many botanical gardens, and this one definitely deserves a spot among the best. This museum is a fantastic place to visit with children, and you can easily spend several hours there without even realizing how fast time flies. Highly recommended for families, garden lovers, and car enthusiasts alike.

It’s a really nice day trip for adults. I don’t know how much fun younger kids or teens would have. - It’s a lot of walking. The auto museum is really nice. There are water bottle filling stations, and the water didn’t taste bad at all. Comfortable shoes. Sunblock if it’s sunny.
Paul A — Google review
Exceeded expectations. We went here based on a recommendation from a friend. Spent 2.5 hours and could have probably used more. Lots to see here and the place is well laid out and maintained. Gardens were glorious yet in late September. The auto museum is outstanding and the Cranberry history room was also very interesting.
Stephen B — Google review
The most amazing children's outdoor play area/discovery center. There was a stream with smooth rocks and a shallow waterfall where kids played bare feet + puppet stage + tree house + sand pit + musical instruments. All in a shaded grotto in the woods called Hidden Hollow. The most amazing part was I wasn't bitten by mosquitoes 🤯🤯 they set up propane mosquito magnets around the hollow. 15/10 recommend to everyone with young kids
Yu C — Google review
One of the must-see places in Sandwich, with a new visitor entrance (ticketing, museum shop, visitor center and bathrooms); physically handicapped, elderly and stroller access via elevator; and system of carts available to transport people if they need some help to navigate the 100-acre grounds. Something here for everyone, from stunning landscape/gardens to antique cars or a beautiful working carousel. Lots of multi-generational families here enjoying themselves. I’ve visited the museum/gardens several times over the years and the place continues to develop and renew itself. The North American Hydrangea Test Garden is stunningly beautiful and the collection is certainly among the finest I’ve seen.
Paul N — Google review
Plan to spend several hours here! Knowledgeable staff, breathtaking gardens, beautiful windmill, and diverse and stimulating Car Museum! Admission is 25 dollars per person. There are multiple restrooms located throughout. Definitely a unique experience to have!
Holly N — Google review
Fantastic gardens with meandering paths throughout. The entire entrance has been rejuvenated with paved parking lots and new buildings to purchase tickets, a shop, restrooms, and reception area. The automobile exhibit is exceptionally presented with contextual information...better than I've seen elsewhere.
Gerry G — Google review
Lovely grounds with lots to explore! The big statues were a huge hit with my kid and the cranberry exhibit was fascinating! There is something for everyone at this place, including a carousel and a vintage automobile exhibit. If you go in July, the hydrangeas are in full bloom and are simply gorgeous. Wheelchairs are available upon request although you cannot reserve one. We arrived about 20 minutes after the opened and had no trouble securing a wheelchair.

Hoxie House, located in the historic center of Sandwich, is a restored saltbox house dating back to 1675. It offers guided tours through its simple, period interiors and stands as one of the oldest buildings on Cape Cod. Originally home to Rev. John Smith and later purchased by whaling captain Abraham Hoxie in the mid-1800s, this unassuming structure lacked modern amenities until the 1950s.
Beautiful old school house overlooking the lake. The house was closed the day I visited, but the grounds were stunning. There is a bench that allows a beautiful view over the lake. This would be a great place to read a book and enjoy some peace and quiet.
Janet S — Google review
Very interesting and historic building. Beautiful setting. The tours were closed when we visited, but walking the outside was still worth the visit. Very cool glass windows and hardware can be seen. Would be nice to have some informational signs on the outside.
Jim M — Google review
A must see visit to a charming area. Don't forget the nearby Dexter Grist mill and the artesian spring water where you can fill up your bottle with cold delicious water. Check the opening times.

Walked up to the Hoxie House on Water Street in Sandwich, Ma. Once was an academy in Sandwich. The first private school of higher learning in Barnstable County. Wasn’t open but fascinating Saltbox house to walk around.
Debbie R — Google review
Oldest original salt box house on Cape Cod built in 1675. Amazing preservation and tour. Only $5 also near the historic grist mill, town hall and glass museum

Nice visit. Our guide was very informative and pleasant. Bought the Historic Sandwich House Pass for four houses and saved on admission cost. Truly a great experience. Still have the Wing Homestead to explore. Looking forward to that tour. Highly recommend. There is a picnic table at the Grist Mill in Sandwich to enjoy a nice picnic. The Nye Homestead is also rich in history and the grounds are serene and beautiful with an awesome bubbling brook. Step back in time to how life use to be.🥰

Incredible house! Our tour guides were enthusiastic and knowledgeable. Was very cool to learn about the older lifestyle, learn where many old sayings come from, and see different tools and details used in past. Great tour for $5!!!

Positive historical experience. On site people were great. If you can appreciate historical buildings, visit, if you have no interest in history, maybe you should not. If you are inquisitive, there is definitely something here to see.

The Sandwich Glass Museum in Sandwich, MA, USA, is a captivating destination that provides insight into the local glassblowing industry. The museum's exhibits and demonstrations offer a glimpse into the vibrant history of glassblowing in the region. Visitors can explore a variety of displays showcasing intricate glass artifacts and learn about the craftsmanship and creativity behind this art form. Additionally, the museum features engaging demonstrations of glass blowing techniques, providing an educational and entertaining experience for all who visit.
Visited here on a weekday. It wasn't busy since it was a beautiful spring day. I bought my ticket there, $14 for adults. If you are in the area, definitely stop in. The museum is very informative and has some great pieces. They have a live demonstration of a skilled worker blowing glass. When I visited, the gentleman made a mermaid tail. It was very impressive. Just beside the demonstration, there is a theater that gives a good history of the local glass factory. Very well done. The gift shop was amazing, and I will be back to purchase some pieces and some jewelry. So beautiful. For a small town, this museum was amazing. Definitely recommend stopping in.

This glass museum is truly worth a visit! From the outside, it may look small, but the interior is surprisingly spacious and filled with fascinating exhibits. The displays are rich and informative, showcasing both historical and artistic aspects of glassmaking. The staff are incredibly kind and attentive, making the experience even more enjoyable. One of the highlights is the live glassblowing demonstration held at the top of every hour—an exciting and educational experience, especially for children. Highly recommended for families!
HC C — Google review
As always, a wonderful visit that continues to educate and inspire collectors and visitors who love glass. Rare and beautiful examples of 19th century glass that can still be found at local antique markets today. Great staff and helpful administrators who seek to ensure you see displays of interests including orientation film that showcases Sandwich Glass production and history. Glassblower demonstrations are fun to watch and reveal the complexities of glass production. Museum gift shop offers new and antique glass for sale. Conveniently located to restaurants, shops and hotels on Cape Cod.
Theresa C — Google review
Another must-see destination in Cape Cod! The museum’s historical significance reaches far back in time, showcasing how glass was once an essential part of daily life. I was fascinated to learn how it was molded into candle holders, lamp posts, and countless other practical uses. The glassblower’s live demonstration was outstanding, both educational and inspiring, and even sparked my interest in pursuing glass art as a hobby. My only suggestion would be for management to consider adding more staff in the gift shop during busy holiday weekends, as checkout was a bit slow. Overall, it was a wonderful and enlightening experience that I would highly recommend to anyone visiting Cape Cod.
Cydonie B — Google review
This Sandwich glass museum is a must visit. History, science, beauty, economics, and more are all covered. The glass blowing demonstration alone is worth the price of admission. Wow! (Every hour on the hour). The history of the once predominant art of glass blowing and how it came to be in Sandwhich is extraordinary. Truly. There are soo many beautiful displays of glass items throughout the history of glass making. There are some really fun and interactive displays interspersed in this space and they are not just for kids. There is also a short movie one can watch to learn more. The glass blowing demonstration seals the deal! Lovely gift shop for purchases. Clean restrooms. You can spend hours and hours here and 1 hour is minimum recommendation. So glad there are artists and others keeping this art form alive and sharing it with the public. A visit is highly encouraged and recommended.
Denise A — Google review
Interesting specialized museum for glass, specifically as it pertains to the historical development of glass making and production of glass products in Sandwich. The museum offers a live glassmaking demonstration at specified intervals during visitor hours, as well as an educational film every 30 minutes. The galleries house an impressive number of historic and more contemporary collections of glass originating in Sandwich. The museum hosts special exhibitions of significant glass artists during the year. Modest admission fee required. Free parking lot is available for museum visitors, as well an an overflow lot adjacent.
Paul N — Google review
I had an incredible time at the Sandwich Glass Museum and was absolutely blown away. The most amazing part was the live glass-blowing demonstration, which was the coolest thing I've ever seen! I also loved how many of the exhibits were interactive, with some displays having sensors that would trigger a dialogue to tell you about the piece you were looking at. This made the experience fun for all ages. My son was so excited to take home a unique glass necklace he bought at the gift shop, which, just like the museum, was filled with beautiful and one-of-a-kind items.

Located in the Town Hall Square Historic District, Dexter Grist Mill is a historic site dating back to 1654. The mill features a charming stone-walled millrace powered by water from Shawme Lake through Mill Creek. Originally driven by water, it was later equipped with an iron turbine in the mid-19th century. Visitors can take personalized tours, witness the corn-grinding process, and purchase fresh cornmeal.
Such a beautiful area. We always make sure to come to Sandwich anytime we're on the Cape. The gristmill is great place to learn some wonderful history
Jessica M — Google review
I visited Dexter Grist Mill during a trip to Cape Cod. This building is owned and maintained by the town just like Hoxie House, so the tour was of similarly high quality. Like most historic buildings, the mill is not accessible for those using a wheelchair, and the narrow steps may be difficult to navigate for those with limited mobility, but a truncated video tour is available online. The level of energy on this tour greatly depends on your tour guide. My group was paired with an enthusiastic young guide, while the group before us received a calm older guide; the energy levels happened to match those in both groups. This is stop is worth the visit for anyone interested in industrial history and architecture and would be a fun tour for anyone wanting to learn more about colonial life on Cape Cod.
Abigail E — Google review
What a great place to learn about a historical location! This corn mill is still working and you can take a tour to explore its history and how it works. You can also purchase some fresh corn mill, too. It seemed a little run down, but that could be chalked up to part of its charm
Logan A — Google review
Wonderful bit of history in downtown Sandwich!! The gentlemen inside were very informative and told so much about the history and rebuilding of the Grist Mill. I even bought some corn meal to take home.
Monee J — Google review
I love this place it was everything I expected and more. I have been in love with old Mills, buildings, history etc. This place does not disappoint.

While beautiful and very picturesque, I am not sure what all the fuss is about. There is no parking and very crowded street intersection. I would avoid if you have something better to do or want to see. Not worth it. Just look at the pictures posted by me and other posters to save yourself the trouble, headache, and time.

Green Briar Nature Center and Jam Kitchen is located on the former grounds of a historic glass factory in Sandwich. The nature center features walking paths through gardens, wildflower plots, and protected land, including the famous briar patch from Thornton Burgess' Peter Rabbit stories. Visitors can explore the 57-acre conservation area and then visit the historic Green Briar Jam Kitchen, which dates back to 1903.
Absolutely gorgeous garden and museum to visit. I visited during the Hydrangea Garden Tour. I'm so happy I was able to visit this spot. The gift shop is awesome, and the lady there was so helpful, and she helped me pick out the next book I am going to be reading, which is all about Thorton Burgess. I can't wait to start it. The garden is absolutely beautiful, and I love how the trails have the storybook along the path. Great place to go with the whole family. Definitely recommend stopping by here.
Janet S — Google review
Really enjoyable experience at the Jam Day event!!! So peaceful, and the jam was phenomenal! I love the library and history room too!
Kristy J — Google review
We went on a Saturday morning. This is a nice area for small, quiet gatherings to sit in the open and admire nature. There are two areas in which you can sit by the water and watch the turtles. They have a library and a story time for kids along with a craft area (we were not there for that, and it has a fee). There are opportunities to make your own jam in an old-fashioned kitchen. However, it requires registration and scheduling. The gift shop features many unique items relative to the author, Thomas Burgess, of the Peter Cottontail stories. No cash is accepted for purchases, and there were issues with their "Square" credit card reader.
Tina H — Google review
Wonderful flower and butterfly garden. Bookshop and store are interesting and amazing. Maria, the Docent, was helpful and kind. She has the best historical stories about Peter Rabbit's author and keepers of the land for this museum.
Nana M — Google review
A really fun activity to do with a young one. My 8 year old really enjoyed making her own jam and having mom as a helper. We ended up with 6+ jars of delicious jam and treasured memories.
Meghan M — Google review
This place was so cute and such a nice stop while in Sandwhich. The garden, pond and wildflowers were so pretty and made for very nice photo spots. The jam and other goods from the mercantile were great. 100% recommend the wildflower and blueberry whipped honeys! Would recommend for groups and people of all ages :)

Cute little stroll through gardens. There's a little gift shop as well

Very cute indoor play room area for toddlers / young kids, $7 fee per kid, no time limit. Parents are free. Small hiking trail outside, very short but cute. Little pond out back too. Turtles and rabbits on display inside in a few enclosures. Worth a visit if you have a young one! They also have two clean restrooms as well.

Sandwich Boardwalk is a historic monument in Sandwich, offering a tranquil setting and one of the best perspectives in the area. This 1,350-foot walk takes you to Town Neck Beach on Cape Cod Bay, where you can enjoy wide-open marshland, shore, and sky views. The boardwalk has undergone numerous repairs over the years to withstand various weather conditions. It's an ideal spot for a picnic or takeout meal with ultimate views of Mill Creek.
This is one of my favorite beaches in the area. There is a beautiful boardwalk that was just rebuilt, and the views here are stunning. There is a spot on the boardwalk where you can jump into the creek below in high tide. During the summer, this is where you will find the kids. The beach is sandy and is a beautiful walk.
Janet S — Google review
The boardwalk was very nice. We were able to walk across it and get a breeze. It was low tide, so it was neat seeing the veins where the water would fill in. Ultimately this will take you to a beach. It was a very wide beach due to the low tide. There were plenty of other parking lots and spots. Where we parked it was $20 for about 30 minute walk. It was worth it to see the location.
Rob M — Google review
The Boardwalk serves as one of the access points to the Sandwich Town Beach with a limited parking area (primarily for residents but non-resident day passes available for $20 - 2025 season). The boardwalk itself is well constructed and suitable for strollers and rollators up to a point just short of the town beach itself. The boardwalk also has an access point to the larger parking area serving the town beach. Wonderful views of the marsh, privileged by the boardwalk cutting through the marsh itself.
Paul N — Google review
Great spot to get a feel for the Cape Cod coast. We just spent 30 minutes walking out and back to the sea. Water was not frigid yet in late September. The marshland is lovely and we saw what we believe was an osprey nest. Clams and Oysters apparently are abundant here and the water under the boardwalk was crystal clear (filtered by the oysters?).
Stephen B — Google review
Beautiful boardwalk walking over the marshes to a couple different beaches. Full sun but we had a nice breeze. $20 to park.
Kris M — Google review
A great, quiet area to go for the day. Parking is available. The boardwalk overlooks a beautiful marsh and leads you to beautiful ocean views and the beach.
Melissa S — Google review
A wonderful, peaceful stroll along the boardwalk ending at the beach! No fees, however there are no public restrooms on-site.
Holly N — Google review
It's pretty but the town is trying to save the dunes. It was cool to see the barge sticking the sand back on to the land in the distance. There were 3 sand pusher trucks waiting for the next work day. Lots of visitors walking along the boardwalk over the marsh. It's wider in some areas. We did see some kids who was searching for treasure with a metal detector come out of the dunes area. If you don't like dogs off leash in the off season, skip this area because about half of them were. All well behaved, from what we could see. A few birds to be seen, white cresting waves, and lots of plants. It's good for a short visit.

Golf course
Sandwich Mini Golf is a family-friendly outdoor sports destination located on Cape Cod. The course is designed to cater to all age groups, making it an ideal spot for a day of fun with the whole family. With its beautiful landscape and stunning scenery, this mini golf course offers an interesting layout featuring bridges and various obstacles for added excitement. While not as extravagant as some other courses, it provides a charming old-school vibe and offers 36 holes at the price of 18 elsewhere.
Great 36 hole mini golf with water hazards and some rough areas. Very friendly staff. We got a hole in one on the last hole, and got a card for a free game. But the card got wet and mangled at lunch, which was distressing. But but, we stopped back and they exchanged it for a fresh new card with no problem.
Noah S — Google review
“A” for effort. I saw that the place was newly renovated or added something new, so I went to check it out for the first time. The parking is good, there is a dirt parking lot & some parking spaces on the side of the road. Walking to the registration place was a little confusing from the dirt parking lot because I didn’t see a designated path, but you can easily find it because it’s straight ahead of you by the giant windmill. The owner seems pretty nice & chill. As far as the mini golf, it was good, who doesn’t love mini golf! There were a few unique putts that were fun to do. But some of the course needs a little maintenance & repair. Maybe even a little bit of a make over. The mini golf course is Bible themed & inspired by the Burke family's global travels. Another positive is that they have ice cream! But I wish they sold other food or snacks as well. They only accept cash, & I think the mini golf is $15 a person, at least for the 36 hole course.
AlewAnimates — Google review
Simple golf course with 36 holes. We did the 2nd half of the course because it wasn’t as crowded. There are Bible verses all over the park and it’s somehow associated with a funeral gone? Anyway, it was fun. Wear a hat and sunscreen. Prepare for no shade!!!
Corinne W — Google review
Some of the holes lack ingenuity and the constant reminder of a Greater Being is a little jarring. That being said, this is a decent activity to do on a cloudy day. Once in a blue moon there is an inventive hole which keeps you coming back for more. It’s mini golf 👍
Peter E — Google review
Creepy religious vibes are surprising and unpleasant. I'm definitely not looking for moral guidance when I go to play mini-golf, but if you're someone who is looking for a little Jesus when you hit the putting greens, then this is the place for you. Otherwise, check out literally any other mini-golf option on the cape for a fun experience without the preachiness.
Thomas W — Google review
We used to go here when my kids were young and it was a simple cute course. Now it is awful. Will not go back! Creepy vibe and dangerous for little kids. Unkept and needs to be improved.
Barbara M — Google review
This course is not a great experience. It’s dirty, poorly lit, and the greens look moldy and have lots of wrinkles and rips. Most ball cups had no drainage so we had to fish our balls out of warm stagnant water. Most of the holes are just straight shots and/or very small. The path to go to the next hole is very unclear or blocked off over most of the back 18. If you go, definitely don’t do the back 18. We did it because it was less busy and it was very obvious why it was less busy, lol.
Emily O — Google review
Great place for a date. There are better mini-golf courses, but this one gets the job done. Might give an atheist a bad day.

Public beach
Sandy Neck Beach, located in West Barnstable, offers a 4.25-mile walk with moderate to difficult terrain including smooth and loose sand, rolling dunes, and marshland trails. The area is recognized as an environmental concern due to its freshwater wetlands and salt marsh. It's the longest beach on Cape Cod, providing ample space for lounging, off-road vehicle trails, and campfires at night. The calm waters and beautiful stones create a picturesque setting for a beach day.
Lovely beach to visit and walk. Nature trails there.
Debbie R — Google review
Sandy Neck Beach in Barnstable is an absolute gem, sprawling sand dunes, sparkling ocean views, and plenty of space for both relaxation and adventures. One of the standout features here is how dog-friendly the beach is. Leashed pups can romp through the sand, splash in the waves, and even chase a ball on the shoreline, a perfect setting for a fun family day out. One of the highlights of our sunset visit was setting up a fire pit right on the sand. To do this, you simply get a fire permit at the entrance gate, conveniently available starting at 5 p.m., which makes the process smooth and stress-free. Once you’ve got the permit, you’re allowed to enjoy a beachfire every evening from 7 to 9 p.m. We arrived early to claim a good spot, gathered some driftwood, and soon had a cozy blaze going while the sky turned golden. Sitting around that fire with gentle ocean sounds in the background and our happy dog curled up by our feet, it felt like the perfect little escape. The permit system keeps things safe and controlled, so everyone can enjoy the warmth without overwhelming smoke or hazards. Though there are no formal amenities like restrooms nearby, the natural beauty, friendly atmosphere, and sunset fires make Sandy Neck feel like an idyllic, off-grid coastal haven. We’ll definitely be back for another fire-lit evening soon.
Jennifer S — Google review
Easy walk to get there. Most of the beach is not dog friendly but at the end of the last parking area was a dog friendly section. The view is nice. If you like to collect different types of rounded rocks for your collection or for your artwork it is a good place to gather some pretty stones.

This place was great!!! Water is clear, not much of a crowd, restrooms were clean. We paid 25 to park and it was worth it. It’s rocky so bring water shoes.

One of our favorite beach walks especially post season. Long walk in both directions. Easy access. Fairly flat walking area at low tides.

Beautiful sunset, very relaxing dinner on the beach w/ fire & friends
Peggi J — Google review
We have been relaxing on this beach for more than 5 years, it is a great place to spend the sunset as a child and go off-road. photos added in June 2024, the entrance on foot has become a little unsafe. I hope this gets fixed soon. There are some little things in the form of a large number of insects that bite painfully and the rocky shore. but that’s why you can go out there in your car, set up a grill, take your pet and children and light a fire. The main thing is don't leave trash and keep this place clean.

Nestled at the Sandwich Marina on Cape Cod Canal, Pilot House Restaurant and Lounge offers a warm and relaxed atmosphere with a focus on seafood, steaks, and a raw bar. With daily specials and outdoor seating, diners can savor delicious local seafood while taking in stunning water views. The restaurant is known for its twist on the classic New England Lobster Roll with dishes like the Lobster Salad Sandwich.
7 of us went Thursday night and I had the pressure of choosing the restaurant - hadn’t been there in quite a while (couldn’t get reservations at Fisherman’s) We all ordered different (reasonably priced) meals and everyone absolutely loved each one as they were seasoned and cooked perfectly {compliments to the chef(s)} It was attentively and pleasantly served to us by Brooke (something which seems rare these days) Pictured are specials (and they were special) surf and turf and scallop risotto YUM We will be back

We had to wait for 45 min on a Saturday night which was not terrible considering we had our dog with us. They have outdoor seating with benches to accommodate us as I believe only the 3 bench tables by the sign are pet friendly. Food was fresh- we got the oyster seafood tower/platter-$65 but it was worth it…oysters were so fresh. We also go the seafood pot pie—so much seafood- scallops, lobster and shrimp with asparagus- I would totally get this again! Steamers were nice and big and again fresh- not sandy at all!! And lastly we got the pork nachos- this was to break up our seafood binge. Perfectly cheesy with beans and shredded pork.
Lynn W — Google review
We ate outdoors and watched the big boats with the kids. Several different eating areas inside and out. The service was so good because it was packed and there was a steady wind. Brava! The food was excellent and so fresh. One of the perfect Cape eateries!

Food came out cold. The pound and a quarter lobster bolognese was more like a quarter pound. Lobster Rangoon was empty. This place went down hill big time. Sad it was a favorite spot for us. Service was slow and who doesn’t offer condiments with a plate with fires? Or wings with nothing to dip them in? Prices went up portions got smaller. Very disappointed. To boot we picked here for our wedding anniversary dinner. Won’t be back. Spoke to other guests leaving and they agreed.

We sat outside and loved the atmosphere. You can’t believe live music and a perfect sunset view on a summer night. The food was good and they are kidding when they say the large lobster roll is LARGE!

Delicious food, great menu, and beautiful views. I got the scallops and they were the most delicious scallops I’ve ever had. Perfectly cooked. We love coming here!

Excellent food and service. From the time we walked into the restaurant from the time we walked into the time we left. Everyone made us feel welcome. There were two of us and we had the seafood pot pie which was to die for. It had so much seafood and it was well worth the price . My friend had the seafood platter which they said was also delicious. I will definitely be back again when I'm in the area.

Museum
Visitor center
The Cape Cod Canal Visitor Center, located in Sandwich, offers free admission to the public from early May through late October. Operated by the federal government, this center provides interactive exhibits and multimedia presentations about the management of canal traffic by the Army Corps of Engineers. Visitors can learn about the construction of the canal and observe live radar and camera feeds showing approaching ships. Additionally, visitors can enjoy a bike ride along the canal's bike path while taking in scenic views.
This is a lovely, small museum that makes me appreciate the wonders of the Cape Cod canal, why it was important, and how hard it was to build it. There is a continuously running, free movie that gives you the history up to present day and how the canal is used. Make sure you watch the beginning to see the fascinating attempts at building and enlarging the canal. I developed a better appreciation for the Army Corp of Engineers who were tasked enlarging the canal and to make it more safe. In the museum, there information about the Army Corp of Engineers, a boat that you can climb on, information about navigation through the canal, interactive ship knot tying exhibit to try your hand, dried sea life touch exhibit, and some other fun kid-friendly activities. You only need an hour there. There is a small gift shop. Outside, in a separate building, there are public bathrooms. Plenty of parking. You can walk to the canal and to the beach. You can see people fishing or playing in the water. The beach is rocky. If you stand on the shore and stare at the water, you will likely spot a cormorant or perhaps even a seal or watch a boat come by. Walking distance away was Seafood Sam's which had excellent fried clam strips, fish and a really good lobster roll at a reasonable price plus an assortment of other food and a bar. Order at the counter and then take it to an inside or outside table or order at the bar. At the visitor center, there are friendly, helpful staff.
Claire W — Google review
It was easy to get a parking spot and the visitor center was filled with hands on exhibits about the canal. There was a good sized men and women’s bathroom in a building near the center, and a path that led to Scusset harbor a decent beach and jetty. The water was cold but fun. Seafood Sam’s restaurant was walking distance from the visitor center which made for an easy dinner. This was an all in one stop and made for a great start to our Cape Cod vacation.

Hidden little gem. You'd think it would be some boring little roadside stop but they have an actual boat you can get into inside! They've got three different kinds if scavenger hunts for kids and they can win prizes. Lots of interactive things for kids. A nice little stop to stretch your feet and entertain your kids for free.
Sarah B — Google review
A lot of history to read about and some interesting displays. There is even a boat you can board and look around. Definitely worth a stop!
Heather C — Google review
First and foremost, the staff at this museum are some of the most welcoming and informative people I have ever met! As soon as we walked in, we were greeted by all of the staff members, and were almost immediately thrust into a conversation about the canal, it's history, and a general question and answer session that was interesting and informative. As we made our way through the exhibits, workers really made a noticeable effort to find out where we were from, and then even took the time to relate different topics that they were discussing to geology and historical places and events that we were familiar with in our home area. Even though the museum is not huge, I highly recommend taking a moment to visit, as it was truly a personalized museum experience that I have never had the pleasure of experiencing before. Great work, everyone involved, and keep it up! Fantastic in every way!

Beautiful beach! My favorite because the water is always calm and clear, the bugs are ridiculous so bring bug spray. I even saw a tick on my towel. I was sitting closer up to the dunes so maybe that’s why. Great for kids and spacious. Parking is $14.00 and plenty. Concession stand and change room. Again….. the bugs!! lol! Flies bit me too.

A nice place for a morning walk. Especially after season. A beautiful estuary environment exists a short distance south. Not a swimming beach, cold water, rocky shore and very crowded in season, but bliss when everyone goes home!

When, I arrived they were doing the walk for Alzheimer's but the event was well organized and didn't effect my arrival at the beach. There was more than plenty of parking for beach goers, and the beach is long so everyone wasn't stuck together and could spread out. I walked the long rocky path (very dangerous) Over to the "light house" and when I go to just over the end of the rocky path.. I saw my first real seal sunbathing! Such a cool experience! Especially being right on the edge of Cape Cod Canal. I highly recommend visiting this place or cape cod in general! Definitely a 5 start experience!

Wonderful beach, clean Spacious rest rooms. Concessions and they sell ice. Parking is $14. Pay by card at gate. Get there early if you want parking and a decently close beach spot. Beach is Long, there is a sandy path that runs across the top of the beach area, should you need to walk far to secure a good Beach site. Go early , place gets crowded.

Beautiful beach. Sad to see garbage washed up with the seaweed on the beach. It's normal now I guess. 😢 We found that there was less congested beach area if you walk farther. The snack stand had a long line. There were only two people. One of them was hand squeezing the lemons for lemonade. If you're going to offer fresh lemonade, you'll need a person to just squeeze the lemons. One person cannot handle the long line. Also, no distinctive sign to say which of the three windows you should order from. Thankfully the ladies next to me allowed me to go in front of them because they knew I was there first. Delicious food! Pretzel, "smash Burger", hot dog, ice cream. We went August 23rd. The beach is in the bay so small waves are good for children. There were a lot of them there! Nice jetty for fishing.

Nestled in the charming town of Sandwich, MA, the Wing Fort House stands as a remarkable testament to early colonial history. Believed to have been constructed in the late 1640s by Stephen Wing, an English immigrant pivotal to the area's settlement, this historic home has been lovingly preserved and restored to reflect its pre-Revolutionary War character.
I live in a Wing Family farmhouse settled in 1795 near Saratoga, NY and I have been very interested in Wing history since tracing my deed and meeting the granddaughter of the last Wing to live in our home. I was so glad to swing by on our way home from the Cape with my 8 year old son. Amazing artifacts and such a cool spot. The archaeologist guiding us today answered all my burning questions and my son was so curious about the objects he had never seen. This is a fantastic piece of history. So glad it still stands. Incredibly rich experience for a child or adult alike!

Not at all swimable when the tide is out, but once it comes back it, it's beautiful! The water was crystal clear, with lots of rocks large and small with so many different colors. We had a great time walking the beach, skipping rocks, and finding little crabs underneath nearly every rock we lifted up! Downside is no bathrooms besides port o's, and no water to rinse off afterwards.

Our #1 stop as soon as we get over the Sagamore Bridge! Mainly because no matter the time of the year when we've been we always see seals! It's not a very sandy beach, lots of rocks but we always sit on the jetty to look for the seals.

Nestled in the picturesque town of Sandwich, MA, the Benjamin Nye Homestead & Museum is a treasure trove for history buffs and curious travelers alike. This beautifully preserved historical house offers an enchanting glimpse into the life of early settlers, showcasing their architectural style and daily living. Originally built around 1678 by Benjamin Nye himself, this charming timber-framed structure has been lovingly maintained by the Nye Family Association since its restoration in the 1960s after falling into disrepair.
Beautiful. But I am extremely prejudiced, as the home belonged to my relatives, felt like home. Reminded me of Tom Bombadill's little piece of land. Not all of it mind you, but the pond, and stream and swans and freshness of it all, despite the settled long ago, feels delightfully nice. Too bad they don't have yours at Christmas. It would be picturesque.
Kirabagheera — Google review
Nye Museum consisted of three buildings: a homestead originally constructed in 1678, a grange hall that now acts as the visitor center, and a grist mill built in 1858. Nye Museum was an educational, fun, and relaxing experience. It had everything I desire in a small house museum and more. Like most historic houses, the buildings were not accessible to those using a wheelchair, and stairs may be steep for those with limited mobility. Lighting was dim in some parts of the house and the grange, especially since I visited on a day that turned rainy. The museum website is well-designed and fairly easy, providing substantial information about the property but no virtual tour at this time. The museum recently closed for the season but will open again in mid June. Tickets are $10 for adults and $0 for children members, active duty military, and NEMA members. If you want a comprehensive overview of life on Cape Cod before the present day, I highly encourage you to visit Nye Museum.

They were closed at the time due to the holiday. Did bump into a couple who work with the museum. I knew my family were connected with the Nye family way back. Turned out the gal was about my 10th cousin. Her and her husband took the time and gave us a tour outside (the museum was closed) describing what it look like back in the day. Wish we were staying one more day. I would've gone back. But I can never thank them enough for taking the time for us on their day off. If I ever go back to the area.. I will come back.

Beach
Town Neck Beach in Sandwich, Massachusetts is a popular spot for both summer and winter activities. During high tide, visitors can enjoy jumping into the water from the famous Sandwich Boardwalk, while in winter, it provides a serene setting for a leisurely walk. The beach offers expansive stretches on both the marsh and ocean sides. The marsh side is perfect for walking with shallow areas near the boardwalk, but caution is advised due to poison ivy along the edges.
Great place to visit. I read where someone wrote that they charge for parking. I have been visiting this location since the 80's and have never paid for parking. We were just there a few days ago (July 2017). When you visit the boardwalk using Boardwalk Road and park in the small parking lot located at the end we have never seen anyone pay or a way to pay. This spot is at the very start of the boardwalk. They even have an port-a-john so you have access to a bathroom. This is a great place to take a walk to the beach, take pictures, look for sea glass, pretty stones and shells. The river is a nice place to swim, fish from the boardwalk or float down. There are still people who live just outside of Cape Cod who don't even know this place. Spend some time and then find a place to eat at one of the many places along Rt 6A.
Rusty G — Google review
One of the nicest beaches on the bay side of the Cape, with a beautiful marsh behind it. A tranquil environment to enjoy the sun, fresh air and swimming. The marsh can be viewed from a boardwalk that cuts through it — spectacular vistas that can be appreciated in every season. Parking fee for non-residents; no charge if entering one of the parking areas after 5pm.
Paul N — Google review
Spectacular view of vast grassland right by the seashore. There is an amazing inner tidal river for kiyaking. Kids have a lot of fun jump diving from the board and doing crab fishing in the river. This place is certainly not a typical beach. It will be nice to have a bigger parking lot, a shower faculty and better public bathrooms.
Hans — Google review
One of the most gorgeous beaches I have been too!
Hanieh H — Google review
Nice beach with a fantastic boardwalk leading up to the beach. The boardwalk has bridge the crosses one of the inlets that makes a great spot for jumping off of. Lots of people jumping off the boardwalk bridge, collecting crabs, and playing in the water. The beach itself is beautiful. The ground is mostly small sized rocks and course sand.
Ryan N — Google review
I love the big beaches on both the marsh and the ocean side. The marsh side is ideal near boardwalk because there are shallow places to walk. Look out for poison ivy on the edges of the walk ways. There are quite a lot of steps to get down to the ocean side but the railings are pretty sturdy. The boardwalk itself is mostly exposed on the sides so be careful not to fall off. It also has some loose boards and a few missing ones that will probably be repaired soon. Both beaches have many rocks so bring good walking shoes. There are no showers or fountains so plan accordingly.
Kellie R — Google review
Beautiful place to visit. During high tide you can jump from the bridge. Lots of crabs and other sea life to see. It is pay to park but we parked on one of the nearby roads and walked down to it.

Sandy Neck Beach is a renowned destination on Cape Cod, offering a diverse range of attractions. The beach features colorful rocks, shallow tidal pools, and sand dunes, along with a wooden boardwalk for leisurely strolls. As part of a wildlife refuge spanning 4,700 acres, it provides habitats for protected species like the piping plover bird and offers picturesque walking trails through dunes and forests. Visitors can also enjoy the option of off-roading with vehicle-friendly areas available.
Beautiful beach, very clean, had 10 degree warmer weather then the other side of town just because it's on the bay and the sun was out over here while it was cloudy on the other side, this is a great beach to go to for the day . My son had a ball throwing the rocks into the ocean for a while and I just recommend water shoes because there's rocks covering the ground by the water .

This was our second time staying at Sandy Neck Motel. We stayed there three years ago for one night and had a good experience and so booked there again, for one night. However, I didn't look closely at the taxes/fees this time when I booked and I should have. Last time, the only charges besides the room cost was the taxes and a water protection fee. This time, in addition to the taxes and water protection fee, we had to pay $10 for a 4th person (for a room with two queen beds), $30 cleaning fee, $4 guest channel fee (we never even touched the television). So, on top of a $180 room cost, we paid $76 for taxes and fees. So the taxes and fees were over 42%. These taxes/fees were listed in my booking, so the motel was upfront about these additional charges. The motel advertises itself as a vacation rental property but it is still a motel room. That's it. So paying $30 for a cleaning fee and $4 for a guest channel fee feels wrong. The motel itself is nice but I really don't like paying taxes/fees of 40%.
Stacey C — Google review
Very nice beach with a mix of rocks and shells at the beginning, with progressively finer sand as you go down the Neck. The dunes alone make Sandy Neck worth visiting. Although, it can get busy in the summer, and 25 dollars is a a bit pricey for beach parking. Bringing an RV down the beach looks relaxing. Bugs are really harsh in the wetlands, but not to bad on the beach side. Dune trail gets really, really hot in the sun, the cool breeze doesn't reach. Very unique beach for the inner Cape.
Wem N — Google review
Love Sandy Neck beach!! We buy a yearly ORV pass and drive on the beach as often as possible. The views of the bay are breathtaking and the sunsets spectacular. You'll see Sandpipers, Plovers, Terns, Cormorants and if you're lucky a seal or two. The beach is well kept and there are hiking trails as well as limited camp sites. You will need to hike several miles in deep sand with all of your gear if you want to camp. They have they have the cleanest restrooms I have ever seen at any beach as well as clean portable restrooms on the ORV side of the beach. This is a rocky beach so go elsewhere if you don't want to wear water shoes.

Sandy Neck Beach is a beautiful beach, and a perfect beach to catch the sunset. The beach area is very large, which allows you plenty of room for you and your party to spread out and enjoy the day. I highly recommend Sandy Neck Beach. Parking is free after 5pm.

The beach is dog friendly during the summer! They are allowed certain places and in the water but with a leash!

Nice long beach to walk and hang out. Beautiful stones of all different colors! I love the little "take a stone or leave a stone" at one of the entrances! The one drawback is that dogs are not allowed May 15 through September 15, but fortunately it was April when we went!

Beach
Scusset Beach, located in Bourne, MA, is a popular destination for those looking to avoid the crowds of other South Shore beaches. Situated on the mainland side of the Sagamore Bridge, it offers easy access and ample amenities such as a large parking lot, concession stand, restrooms, and picnic tables. The beach is known for its clear waters and gentle drop-off, making it ideal for swimmers of all ages.
Beautiful Sunrises, a great beach that's very clean, and well-kept with an abundance of wildlife, Your eyes will well up and your eye sight may blur with salty fog as you watch the breathtaking sunrises. Embrace the orange for a fleeting 20 minutes, if that A natural beauty.

I enjoyed this beach. The water was cold, but clear. It had some waves, but not too big. The crowd of people were families. It is a sandy beach with some rocks. There is bathrooms and showers. There is a snack bar as well. I had a lovely time spending the whole day here. I will definitely have to come back another time. Ps. There is phone service as well. Some beaches you can’t get service.

My go to beach coming from the milford area. Go early and parking and finding a great spot is never an issue. Search the tide charts before you arrive. The last three visits the food but was not open. Fine for us as we bring our own food but many others were upset. Sand is clean, entry to water is a little rocky but then very smooth into cool waters.

Quiet and beautiful

Pretty beach with nearby parking and a food shop a short walk from the sand.

Very quiet and clean place. Perfect to take your family and relax.

$40 for out of state is ridiculous, but the beach is nice. Especially at low tide, the pools are great for exploring. The bathroom facilities were gross. Long walk from the parking lot.
Lee K — Google review
You can park in the entrance of the area but it's like a half a mile walk in to the beach. They didn't post it in the state park website but they closed off the RV and parking area so you cannot park close to the beach. I'm guessing until the peak season.

Hiking area
Scorton Creek is a beloved destination for those seeking adventure and relaxation alike. This picturesque spot has become a rite of passage since the 1980s, with generations returning to dive and swim in its refreshing waters. Picture yourself floating down the creek on tubes, surrounded by friends and family, enjoying laughter and good food for hours on end. The area offers fantastic opportunities for canoeing, kayaking, or simply soaking up the sun while tubing along its gentle currents.
What a great day spent with friends and family! This is riding the tide folks. We had upwards of 15 tubes and other assorted inflatable devices, tied together and spent the next 2.5 hours relaxing, eating, drinking and having a crazy amount of laughs!!! So looking forward to doing this again!!

Wonderful creek to canoe 🛶 kayak, swim or tubing. Nice flat hiking trails, but very busy with dog walkers.

This is gorgeous. The only down side - one of the “locals” was incredibly rude to us even though her truck took up two parking spaces. She also had a dog off leash that didn’t listen very well. The poor parking attended had to hide from her. She said she was going to “report us” for being tourists. 🙄
