History Museums
Dumfries Museum and Camera Obscura, situated in Dumfries & Galloway, is the largest museum in the region. It serves as a treasure trove of history, showcasing the story of the land and people of the area.
A great place to visit with lots of searches for the kids (find all the historic lego figures, find all the animals, search for all the faces etc) this place is free to enter but sadly on the day we visited the weather was poor so we couldn't access the camera obscura which is chargeable to see out over Dumfries. The museum has just about everything, lots of interesting artifacts about the area, the building itself is beautiful and the staff were on hand to answer any questions, we'll worth a visit.
Paul F — Google review
Very large museum in Dumfries with lots of variety to the displays. Shop on site (though magnets on display had very limited stock (1) so we were disappointed). Free entry, toilets available and drinking water. Worthy of several hours visit to take everything in.
Joshua T — Google review
It's a nice enough museum. The camera obscura was a bit of a climb..lovely building stunning location and very friendly staff
Alison B — Google review
Great museum, educational and unique exhibition, friendly and professional staff.
Tom B — Google review
Really enjoyed our visit to the museum, The kids had fun looking for the mini lego figures hidden amongst the exhibits and getting to touch things and trying on the costume, and going up to see the camera obscura was really good great to see and the guide was very knowledgeable and kept us entertained showing us it. It's free to visit the museum but you can give donation at the door but you do pay to go up to the camera obscura but both worth it.
Fiona — Google review
This place is fantastic - and it's free. I took a 6y and there was so much to do. Lots of items to handle, presented at under 2 feet from the floor so easy to reach and replace. The content is interesting to locals and visitors alike. Dressing up is available throughout and multiple worksheets/Lego hunts etc help to engage different ages of younger kids, allowing older kids (grown ups) to be afforded the time to read at their own pace. Staff are easily found, cheerful and helpful, with pride in the building and its contents. We were sorry not to get up to the Obscura (for which there is a fee) but I'd highly recommend this for all ages of visitor as I've been several times before.
L M — Google review
A really extensive museum with plenty of interesting and well kept artefacts to look at. There a a large range of interactive exhibits for children which is a great touch. Entry is free and we gave a donation as the museum was so interesting. Well worth a visit, if you’re in Dumfries.

Robert Burns House is a historic building that was once the home of the legendary poet Robert Burns. The house now features exhibits, including a large plain jug with a salt-glaze finish that inspired Burns' epic poem "Tam o Shanter." Located in Dumfries, this region holds significance in Scottish history and creativity, being connected to the beginning of Scottish Christianity and serving as an inspiration for many of Burns' greatest works.
I did not know who Robert Burns was till I heard he wrote Auld Lang Syne. A very interesting and educational visit for those he is less known to. Lovely old decor and displays of his work as a poet and wrighter. Respect for the preservation of his work.
L O — Google review
Nice place for a walk about..the house is small, much like all other houses. There are some interesting pieces to look at.. Donations welcome
Alison B — Google review
Small museum cum house to visit. 4 rooms available to see, historic objects on display. Friendly staff. No toilets available, car parks (2x) within 2 minutes walk (St Michael's and Brooms Rd)
Joshua T — Google review
Really interesting little house, that was the last home of Robert Burns. Interesting facts and artifacts to explore. Free admission (you can donate). 2 rooms downstairs, upstairs not accessible.not wheelchair accessible. Lovely place.
Katie H — Google review
Well worth a visit, very interesting, full of history and character. There is a free carpark not too far away and it is also in walking distance to the Mausoleum and into town. Entry is free, although they do have a donation box and also a small gift shop. The gentleman is so informative and helpful. You can even try on some of the hats and clothes in the dressing room!
Barbara B — Google review
Best one of the local museums if you like Robert Burns. He died inside this house.
Zumba S — Google review
Really interesting house to visit, even if you are not so interested in Robert Burns or know much about him. For those who are, this is where he died and each room is labelled with its original use in Burns time and there are original belongings of his and wife Jean. On one of the windows, you can see Burns has scratched his name into the glass. Amazingly, this place is free to visit, but with donations appreciated. Very much worth planning a visit along with some of the local free museums and landmarks.
Elizabeth B — Google review
Well worth a visit if your nearby, the house is small with only about five rooms, but very informative... it's a four minute walk from the house to the Church where he's buried... definitely worth a visit if your a fan.

The Robert Burns Centre is a free attraction located in Dumfries, Scotland, offering a riverside playground with a unique willow sculpture of a Belted Galloway cow. Inside the center, visitors can explore the extensive information about Burns' connections with Dumfries and enjoy interactive experiences such as choosing Burns songs to listen to through headphones and hearing poems being read aloud. The center also features original manuscripts and artifacts from Burns, along with interactive audio/visual exhibitions detailing his life and works.
Booked and stopped in for a baby friendly screening. Easy to access with the pushchair, room to park it in the auditorium, comfier seating that some chain cinemas. Really friendly staff and so good to be able to get to the cinema and not have to miss out. Sound and lighting were at perfect levels to not deafen and so it was easy to move about if necessary. Would definitely recommend.

Bonnie's Bistro on top floor is a great spot. Mr and Mrs Howat are consummate family hosts. Food and wine/beer offering spot on. Try the river view terrace. Locals recommended it and were spot on.

Small museum dedicated to the life of Robert Burns showcasing some of his writings and possessions. The museum staff were most helpful in giving us a personal introduction to the museum and collection before letting us take a self guided look around.

The Burns Mausoleum is a Victorian home in the center of Dumfries, serving as the final resting place for Scotland's beloved literary figure, Robert Burns. Located in St Michaels churchyard, this mausoleum is an impressive tribute to the renowned writer. The graveyard itself is remarkable, with striking memorials and tombs. Visitors can view the mausoleum from outside or enter during specific times to see its interior and take pictures.
What an amazing graveyard. This has to be one of the most impressive I've ever seen in Scotland so far. The size and quality of the memorials and tombs are incredible. The highlight of the visit is the magnificent Robert Burns mausoleum, which contains his memorial and frieze sculpture. It's open at certain times of the week to go inside, however it's not necessary as there is ample opportunities to take pictures of the inside from the outside. In the North corner of the graveyard is the site of Burns' original grave.
Martin G — Google review
This is a must visit for those of you looking into Burns history - I met a guy with all the information who was extremely informative and chatty, will definitely recommend to everyone that you visit the mausoleum. Ask questions and you shall receive the answer.
Damien R — Google review
The most famous “resident” of St Michael's street churchyard in Dumfries, Scotland's national poet Robert Burns . Originally completed in 1817 from the red sandstone.
Sox C — Google review
Located in the graveyard of St Michael's Church, this really does stand out from the other graves. Not far away is the site of Burns first grave, which is marked with a plaque. With this mausoleum, there is an information board about Burns and why this mausoleum was built. The rest of the graveyard deserves exploring and this is not far away from the Burns House, which is free to visit (check opening times)
Elizabeth B — Google review
Lovely spot and a must if you're interested in the poet. The cemetery around it is also amazing.
Josu — Google review
A really fascinating place to visit, with a beautiful monument to Robert Burns as well as a plaque honouring his original resting place. The cemetery also tells the story of the people of Dumfries, with gravestones often offering the actual road of where the blessed departed. Unfortunately, despite visiting on a Sunday, the church was not open.
C K — Google review
The peaceful resting place of Robert Burns. The churchyard is very historic. It is in walking distance from his last home and well worth a visit.
Barbara B — Google review
I first walked through the churchyard and read the memorials, the Burns Mausoleum being the most grand. The most moving to me though was the memorial to the martyrs of the persecution. Then I went in the church and was guided by a volunteer. The pulpit is a massive structure carved of a single tree.

Devorgilla Bridge, also known as the Old Bridge House Museum, is a charming pedestrian bridge that dates back to the 15th century. Named after Lady Devorgilla, it offers scenic views of the River Nith and serves as one of Scotland's oldest standing bridges. The bridge is a prominent feature in Dumfries' river corridor and provides a picturesque photo opportunity.
Beautiful old bridge, now footbridge only, and worth including in a walk around the town. Recommend that you also try to time your walk so you can visit the museum at the end of the bridge.
Elizabeth B — Google review
Hidden gem! There was 2 hours free parking by the river, we’ve had such a great time.
HanQing L — Google review
Nice little museum with very friendly staff.
Zumba S — Google review
Beautiful foot bridge, with great views over the Nith. Starting from here, you can make a circular walk of about 3 miles following the Nith down stream on the west Bank as far as the Troqueer foot bridge, possibly then visiting Castledykes Park, before returning on the east bank through Dock Park and onto the Whitesands.
Alison M — Google review
It's a nice bridge. It helps alot if you want to get across the river without the need of swimming or getting wet in any way. Perfect 5 stars (5.5 stars if you can't swim)
Kristian L — Google review
Great views of the river, a council funded (so free to enter) museum in the oldest domestic house in Dumfries - and the bridge itself is great to look at.
Simon ( — Google review
Walking along this side of the river, Dock Park, Dumfries, everything is lovely and the views and scenery are quite spectacular. However go over the bridge into Dumfries town center and everything changes? Dumfries High Street and the surrounding shopping areas have dramatically gone downhill with large empty closed and dilapidated buildings, far too many for my liking to the point where I cant see this town recovering. This is not caused by the coronavirus or lock-down, Dumfries as a town and town center have been in steady decline for many years now and the local council really needs to look at whats happening here, maybe reconsider opening up the pedestrian areas in the town so buses and taxis can get back into the center, then maybe just maybe businesses will want to return and Dumfries will be the market town it once was?

A beautiful statue of Scotland's well loved national poet, standing in a deservedly prominent location at the top of the High Street, in front of Greyfriars Church. It's sculpted from Italian marble and the carving is incredibly detailed. There are short extracts from his poetry around the plinth. Well worth a look and a great photo opportunity.

Bridge
Dumfries Suspension Bridge, initially thought to be a modern structure, is actually a Victorian footbridge designed to offer local children a safe river crossing away from busy traffic. The bridge provides delightful views of the River Nith and the Dumfries skyline. It offers a springy walking experience and connects to a riverside walk and children's playground on the opposite bank. This attraction is part of an interesting collection of bridges in Dumfries, each with its own unique appeal.
Stunning bridge, worth visit
Marta S — Google review
This footbridge over the River Nith provides good views and nice to include on a walk around the town.
Elizabeth B — Google review
The Dumfries Suspension Bridge, also known as the Buccleuch Street Bridge, was built in 1875 and is a pedestrian-only crossing over the River Nith. It's a fine example of 19th-century engineering and remains an iconic part of Dumfries' riverside. It was a real pleasure to walk across the river and take in the views of the bridge from both sides. Just a note – cyclists are asked not to pedal while on the bridge, so it stays safe and peaceful for everyone using it.
Andy — Google review
Believed this was a modern footbridge but it's actually Victorian, built to provide local children with a safe river crossing away from the busy traffic of other bridges. It's delightfully springy to walk on and offers great views of the river and Dumfries skyline. There's a nice little riverside walk and children's playground on the opposite bank.

Dental clinic
Dumfries Dental Clinic is a professional yet caring dental practice where patients feel at ease. Amanda Connell, a skilled dentist, has received praise for her composite bonding treatments and emergency dental care. Patients have reported feeling comfortable and safe during long sessions with Amanda, who is known for her perfectionism and ability to create natural-looking results. The clinic's modern facilities and friendly staff contribute to a pleasant experience for both regular check-ups and cosmetic procedures such as whitening.
In 2020 I started my composite bonding treatment with Amanda Connell. We started with a whitening treatment for a couple of months and that alone - the results were amazing. I then had two sessions for the composite bonding and both Amanda was fantastic, these were long sessions and she really made me feel comfortable and safe in her hands. The results were amazing and I have never been happier with my teeth. They look so natural that when I tell people they are always shocked at how natural they look.
Aidan A — Google review
I regularly use Amanda for hygiene check-ups & cosmetic procedures including whitening. She’s always a delight, so professional and puts you at ease. I’ve never been a fan of going to the dentist but she always makes it a pleasant experience. Lovely modern clinic too!

I see Amanda for a hygiene appointment roughly every 6 months. She allows me to feel relaxed and comfortable during my appointments. Amanda is very thorough but gentle when doing a scale and polish, would highly recommend.
Lauren M — Google review
I am a regular long standing patient at Dumfries Dental Clinic - it is very professional but with a caring side that has always made me feel at ease. I am a nervous patient yet find that my dentist strikes just the right balance of allowing me time but getting the job done (something we all appreciate I'm sure). I have had fillings, root canal treatment and crowns. These have been exceptionally well done and I am very happy with the results. I appreciate that the regular check ups keep on top of any issues that occur but have also found that when I need an emergency treatment they are there for you and make you feel welcome.
SA C — Google review
Had a bride emergency! Due to get married on Saturday and I chipped my front tooth, Amanda sorted me out. She is a perfectionist and made me feel so comfortable and confident. I Gave her a big hug afterwards. Not from the area either and she managed to get me in within an hour of chipping my tooth.
