Te Anau Lakefront Backpackers is a relaxed hostel offering a variety of accommodation options such as tents, dorms, rooms, and cabins. The property provides free Wi-Fi, a movie room, and indoor/outdoor cooking facilities. It's conveniently located just a five-minute walk from the town center and offers stunning views of Te Anau Lake. Guests can choose between shared dorm rooms or opt for more affordable glamping tents.
I had not stayed in a backpackers for some time and really only needed a bed for the night before starting a hike. I was impressed with the set up. The rooms are at the back and the communal area in the front with a lake view. My room was clean and tidy, itbis notna modern backpackers but not much to fault considering the value for money. Easy walk into the main centre or fiordland visitor centre and along waterfront

Comfortable and clean hostel to stay in Te Anau, it is close to the lake and the main street. Staff is very friendly and keen on helping us with whatever we need. The manager lady from Chile is legend! Very welcoming and helpful, knows everything we asked about hiking and Milford sound.
Gao E — Google review
I stayed in the 4 bedroom dorm, it was basic but the beds were comfortable. The dorm bathroom wasn't fantastic (no shelves/bad floor drainage) but there are nicer common bathrooms you can use if you don't want wet feet. The common spaces were great - there's a big well-stocked kitchen, a TV lounge and other semi-seperate lounges with lovely big windows overlooking the lake. My friends and I booked two nights and ended up only staying one, but the staff were super helpful in putting the room on resell for the second night. It didn't resell, but we were grateful that they were willing to try that option for us!
Avi N — Google review
We stayed in one of the lakefront rooms. The room was cosy and spacious and a great view of the lake. Recently renovated and had everything you needed for a comfortable stay. The common areas were clean and tidy - they were cleaned throughout the day. Great lounge area overlooking the lake - perfect for a morning coffee and a space to read your book on a rainy morning! Staff were all really friendly. Just a short walk into town - quiet location.

Top 3 my favourite hostels in New Zealand, and I have been in the country for almost a year as a backpacker. 😌 I have to say the service was warm, even if it was winter the facilities are always on time, receptionist, was top. Right now, they are improving some of the shared rooms with cabins 🐳 If you come to Te Anau give it a go, and don't miss the change to talk with all the people around.
Samuel M — Google review
Located by the lake, the lounge is large, beautiful and has a great view. The rooms are clean and the heating is very warm. And 啊lovely girl with black curly hair helped us store the luggage left in the reception room in the storage room. Thank you very much🫶.
Gf Z — Google review
Stayed in the private cabin rooms. Very cosy and warm in the rooms. Shared showers and toilets were very clean and decently large. Tea and coffee room had everything we needed including kettle, cutlery and drink ware. Located right across the lake.
Erica L — Google review
I booked the private glamping and was pleasantly surprised by how peaceful it was, even though it’s located within a backpacker setting. The facilities were clean and well-maintained, making it a comfortable and relaxing stay. The glamping setup is charming—perfect for a romantic getaway with your partner.

Radfords on the Lake offers a luxurious and eco-friendly escape with contemporary quarters featuring kitchenettes, Wi-Fi, and access to free bike hire and laundry facilities. The grand complex boasts 14 pearly white units angled towards the lake view, some equipped with spa baths. Guests praise the incredible host, well-equipped rooms with thoughtful touches, comfortable beds, spectacular views, cleanliness, and helpful tips for local excursions.
We stayed one night at Radfords on the Lake as a stop over on the way to Milford Sound. It would have been nice to stay longer. The rooms were fantastic, excellent amenities and we all had the best night sleep. Kerri provided great recommendations for dinner and breakfast. Excellent service all round. Ideally located on the lake and walking distance to central town. Highly recommend and we would have no hesitation in staying again.
Melanie M — Google review
Beautiful lakefront property with stunning views. The rooms are a generous size and exceptionally well-appointed – every little detail you’d want for a short motel stay has been thoughtfully taken care of. The beds and pillows were more comfortable then a 5 star stay. Kerri was incredibly friendly and really looked after us, making our stay feel special. Every recommendation she gave us about the area – from restaurants to sightseeing – was spot on and well worth following. Highly recommend Radfords on the Lake for comfort, views, local insight, and warm hospitality
Sanjeev G — Google review
We stayed here for two nights in September. We received a very warm and friendly welcome from the lady at check-in who provided very good recommendations for things to do and where to eat. Our room was excellent, very spacious and had everything we needed. We had a great view of the lake and the location of the property is close to all amenities. This place is thoroughly recommended.
Sue G — Google review
Lovely motel right at the lake. The room we had was on the second floor and faced the lake directly. It is conveniently located within walking distance to the town center which had several great eateries, 2 supermarkets, a pharmacy. Plenty of shops nearby for amenities if you need. Do say Hi to the motel residential car Dexter. Cute boy that would demand loudly to be let into your warm room. Of course, do say Hi to Kerri as well since she would be the one that takes great care of you during your stay. Make sure you talk to Kerri for great food recommendations. The room itself is extremely clean. Definitely a recommended place to stay and I would happily re book here.
Kaitlyn F — Google review
I need to start this review by saying I don’t do Reviews! So for me to take the time to write about Radfords on the Lake well it definitely left an impression. To start with Keri was warm and friendly and personable with great tips about the town and things to entertain us. The motel itself was extremely clean and fresh and super comfortable. The best nights sleep there after being on the motel circuit for over a week, I didn’t want to get out of bed. But you have too just to sit and stare at the beautiful view of the lake. Which by the way every room has due to the clever design. They have thought of everything there even down to the egg cups!! Thanks Keri and her team. I just hope I get the chance to stay again someday soon. Chris ….

My partner and I have always tried to travel on a budget but we had the opportunity to stay at Radfords on the Lake and experience true luxury and WOW!!! It's going to be hard to go back to anything else after this, even my own bed doesn't cut the mustard. The cleanliness is next level, I can't say I've ever seen everything get steam cleaned between guests before. All the little touches they've added really do make all the difference. And the hospitality from Kerri and Dexter was top notch. Kerri went out of her way to help us out when we got into a pickle, and provided great recommendations. We THOROUGHLY enjoyed our stay. And FYI, one night is not enough, stay a few! There's so much to do in Te Anau. (from Amelia & Chris)

We stayed at Redford’s on the Lake for two nights and absolutely loved it! The location is breathtaking, right on the water, and so peaceful. Our room was spotless and very comfortable, and the hosts were incredibly welcoming, giving us great local tips that made our trip even better. We left feeling refreshed and can’t wait to return!
Siavash E — Google review
We had a wonderful stay at Radfords on the Lake. Kerri, her husband Steve and family went over and above to ensure we were taken care of. We arrived during the afternoon of the multi-day power outage. Nothing was operating in the town during this time, but Kerri somehow organised for all guests to be fed dinner the first night and breakfast the next morning. Some feat as she had many, many guests and no power. Thank heavens for the trusty gas BBQ!! Radfords is perfectly positioned, right opposite the lake and the rooms are beautifully decorated and spotlessly clean. If venturing to Milford Sound and Ta Anau, this is where you need to stay.

Fiordland Lakeview Motel and Apartments is a charming accommodation located right on the shores of Lake Te Anau, just a short walk from the town center. The property underwent extensive renovations in 2019, offering deluxe studio rooms with modern amenities such as large TV screens, electric fires, and coffee machines. The Tanara Studio Suites provide stunning views and well-equipped spaces, including fully equipped kitchens. Guests can also enjoy a coin-operated laundry and a BBQ area with lake views.
We had a 2 night stay in March so that we could do the Milford Sound coach trip with less hours on the coach than if we were doing it from Queenstown. The pick up was a short walk down the road. We loved our stay here, the view is amazing. Although we had seats right outside our room, we chose to sit in the front communal area, that had 2 small tables and chairs. We ate dinner there both nights, as why sit in a restaurant when we can enjoy this wonderful view. Absolutely loved it. Our room was on the ground floor in the original part, it was large, clean and comfortable. Lounge/dining with kitchen, a large bathroom that looked to have been modernised recently. The bedroom at the back, while a bit dated, had a large comfy bed. I have seen mention of noise from the above unit but we found it quite peaceful during our stay. The host was very friendly. We would definitely stay again if ever over that way again. A Beautiful place.

An amazing stay!! My partner and I travelled NZ for 3 weeks, staying in lots of different accommodation, and by far this one was the best!! The lady at the reception when checking in was an absolute gem, she was so helpful and we cannot thank her enough for helping us with our trip outside of the accommodation part!! Will definitely be back!! ❤️
Mia G — Google review
We loved the attention to detail in the design, and care paid to the appointments of the room. Also nice to see natural cleaning products and facility for composting and recycling. The staff were so helpful and friendly, with spot-on advice for local activities. So nice to sip our wine in luxury at the end of the day with the sunset on the lake and mountains. Felt like a honeymoon. We'll be back for another! :-)

📣Amazing lakeview❣️ The apartment room is contemporary, spacious and clean. Heated bathroom floor is a plus! The bathroom comes with contemporary shower and bathtub. There’s an option for daily room service too. The best part is the total separation of the toilet and bathroom. Highly recommend this apartment stay!
Grace — Google review
We booked this hotel 8 months in advance of our trip. The dates of our itinerary changed around the 7th month mark. The only way I could re-arrange those dates was to cancel the entire booking and re-book (without speaking to anyone, it was all done online). We were charged close to $300. But re-book we did. Then 3 months before our scheduled trip my husband broke his ankle. So, we had to cancel again…another nearly $300. So, we paid this hotel close to $600 and never stayed there and never spoke to anyone. Calling didn’t work, I couldn’t get anyone on the phone. To say that their customer service is bad would be an understatement. Don’t stay here! There is zero flexibility.
Lois — Google review
Large, spacious apartment that was exceptionally clean and comfortable with lovely views. The owners were so helpful and went above and beyond anything I have experienced at other motels or hotels.
Darryn C — Google review
We loved our 2 night stay in Te Anau at Fiordland. The room had a fantastic view of the lake and was close to town. We did the Doubtful Sound cruise and really enjoyed that. Highly recommended. Note that the town of Te Anau is very popular with foreign tourists so we had difficulty finding dining options without reservations even as only a couple, so best to make dinner reservations during busy season.
Dale Z — Google review
We had a large modern room with floor to ceiling windows A gorgeous view of the lovely front garden and then the lake. Mod cons like, remote control blinds, fireplace and bean to cup coffee machine. Lovely host who takes pride in her hotel and interested in your travels. Free parking with one way in and one out.

Parklands Motel is a conveniently located accommodation in Te Anau, with popular attractions like Luxmore Jet and Fiordland Cinema nearby. Guests have praised the motel for its spacious and comfortable rooms, as well as its cleanliness and value for money. The friendly staff are accommodating, and the shared kitchen facilities are well-equipped. Some rooms come with additional amenities like microwaves and toasters.
Loved it!! Great example of an older style motel clearly well maintained and loved. Our room was spacious, clean as a whistle, well equipped and the bed was lovely. I got my highest sleep score for more than six months!! Just what you need when travelling long distances on these roads!! The park over the road is gorgeous and the nearby lake foreshore is extraordinary!! Thankyou.
Stewart G — Google review
The motel has a great location and the staff are very helpful and friendly. The rooms are very large, but quite dated - the interior felt a bit like a large student dormitory, especially the toilet. The walls are also paper thin - we got woken up by our neighbour's phone alarm at 6am, and they had alarms set every 10 minutes just to make sure you'd definitely wake up with them. The wall was vibrating loudly with the vibrations of the phone too so I'm guessing the motel was built before mobile phones were a thing. You also don't quite get a mountain view from the mountain view rooms - more like a view of the tall trees in the park.
Robboster — Google review
Good location the rooms were adequate. Though staff should learn how to clean I don't think the toilet had been cleaned since it was new. Was very ripe . I wouldn't stay there again
Kiwi G — Google review
Lovely apartment!! Had lots of amenities (fridge, microwave, hot drinks etc) and we got a free upgrade into the bigger room too. Would definitely book this place again!
Em T — Google review
It’s a motel that has everything! We checked in after office hours, so the staff left the room key outside the front desk with clear instructions. All the information is available in the room and is easy to read, including details about Wi-Fi, nearby facilities, and laundry instructions. I especially appreciate that the staff informed us the kitchen was under renovation, allowing us to prepare a backup plan for our dinner. Overall, this is a high cost performance value motel to stay at Te Anau for a transit night.
Sophia C — Google review
Stayed here for one night last minute and we accidentally booked the wrong night. The owner was extremely helpful and got us into a room anyway! He was also super knowledgeable about the town and things to do. Great stay! Super clean.
Venessa M — Google review
OVERPRICED at NZ$210 per night. Dated room generally. No air conditioning/heat pump - only a noisy heater. No cooking facilities in unit. Gravel yard outside. Dog pen with three menacing-looking dogs 15m from our entry door. There is much better value around Te Anau.
Rob W — Google review
Our stay was amazing! Everything was perfect. WiFi worked great, room was spotless, and staff were super friendly. Huge thanks for helping us book the Milford Sound tour and giving us a 10% discount. The tour was fantastic! I highly recommend to check out Milford Sound from Te Anau and stay at this place!

This Te Anau motel was excellent, comfortable, cozy, warm and perfect for our stay. The room and bathroom were clean and well-maintained. The host, Mark was incredibly friendly, which made the experience even better. We had a great time and would happily stay again.

Perfect accommodation with friendly staff and owners are an absolute treasure to deal with. Have stay multiple times in the last 2 years. Rooms are always clean, tidy and warm. Quiet place for those that like to be away from it all. A short walk to town to enjoy all Te Anau has to offer. Mel & Mark are the perfect host. Totally recommend staying here.

Had a fantastic stay at the Arran Motel in Te Anau. Hosts Mel and Mark warmly welcomed us on arrival. The room was spotless and spacious. Bed was very comfortable and shower pressure amazing. All things needed for self catering were available but with just a short walk to town centre eating out was also an easy option.

Everything you expect from a cost effective motel. About 2 minutes drive to the town centre. Great place to stay if you are heading to Milford sound one day. Rooms are clean, spacious and comfortable. Tea and coffee in the rooms. Laundry available as well. They do a daily room service which is nice.

Te Anau Central Backpackers is the perfect spot for budget travelers seeking a central location in Te Anau. As the largest hostel in town, it offers ample social spaces, including a communal kitchen and a cozy lounge with a fireplace. Guests can enjoy an outdoor courtyard complete with barbecue facilities and beautiful gardens. Accommodation options range from dorms accommodating two to eight guests—available as mixed or female-only—to private rooms like singles, twins, doubles, and quads for those desiring more privacy.
We knew we would arrive late so we sent a message for late check in. The hostel was very responsive. When we arrived, an envelope with my name and our keys were left on the counter of the reception. This hostel is very spacious. The facilities are kept very clean and there are plenty of toilets and showers. There is a laundry room and clothesline where you can hang your stuff. The sitting area outside is also very spacious. The staff is super friendly and helpful. The place is walkable distance to the town center. The dorm is large where there are enough spaces for everyone. The mattress is so comfortable. I would highly recommend this place and will stay here when come back to visit.

The best hostel experience I have ever had and I have been to hostels all over the world. You definitely won't find better value for money at any nearby stays. The staff are really friendly and fun to hang out with and are able to give lots of helpful info. The whole place is cleaned every day. The kitchen is massive, the showers and toilets are great, the wifi is super speedy, they have a fireplace, a movie room, an outside BBQ area, grass space to play games and a tennis court! This place is incredible. Do yourself a favour and spend your time here. I considered spending one night here and ended up staying for 4. Looking forward to returning again soon.

Had an incredible experience here! The bed we're super comfy and the location was amazing! The have a well equipped kitchen too so you can cook if you want. The bathrooms were clean and there were several areas to sit and lounge other than the room☺️ I'd definitely stay here again.

Sandra was such great help booking me into another room type when the one I wanted was unavailable. One of the cleanest hostels I've been to and just a few minutes walk to the town centre. The heaters in the rooms are very warm, so don't bundle up or you'll be sweating!
Winter W — Google review
Great place. Perfectly located, clean rooms and bathrooms, well appointed kitchen and comfortable living areas. All you could want in a backpackers. Staff were fantastic and went out of their way to make our stay the best it could be. Stay here if you can.

Superb, simple place. Warm fireplace greeting, ample cooling utensils and equipment in huge kitchen, guest suggestions acted on, clean, bright, spacious, hot showers and accompanied by the kind personalities of Hamish and the team. Place where great memories begin.

Very nice hostel, really clean and quiet. Mattress and pillows were confortable too. The kitchen is very big, but can be busy at times. Wifi connection is very fast, did a 2hours business Zoom meeting without issues. Very cheap compared to other accommodations in Te Anau.

New hostel, opened in November 2022 (although I think it was a hostel before under different management). Staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. Communal areas were good. Docking stars because the rooms weren't great. 1) Very thin walls. 2) Funny door lock system, which means people are making a racket trying to work out how to open and close their room doors, and you have to actively pull the doors shut - it's especially annoying when people are off on their hikes at 5am. 3) Not enough plug sockets in the room (only 2 sockets for a double room), 4) Toilet was blocked.

The Village Inn is a relaxed hotel in Te Anau, the closest town to Milford Sound and several great walks. The property offers casual rooms with free Wi-Fi, a restaurant, and a lounge with a bar. It's set up like an old gold mining town, providing spacious rooms with updated and clean bathrooms.
Booked their partner hotel but ended up being moved to this Inn. It was fantastic! The room was better than we had booked and guy on reception was very friendly. Great location too. Room amenities were perfect, with a fridge, microwave, electric hobs and loads more. Would stay here again.
Em T — Google review
The Village Inn is a good example that classic decor is still functional and comfortable when well maintained. The rooms are clean, meat and well kept with core amenities, such as quick Wi-Fi, ample hot water and air conditioning. Our room had a renovated bathroom and we believe that the inn has been gradually renovating sections with time. Service at the desk was friendly and helpful. Parking is free and right outside your room. One minor annoyance is that there are not a lot of power plugs in the room, but aside from that the Village Inn is a good affordable option if you're stopping by Te Anau.

We arrived early and the manager let us in , which was great. The room was very large although dated but everything was clean and worked well. Bathroom was good and water pressure also good, we had toiletries supplied so no drama there. We didn't know how to use the split system and the manager showed us with no problem, yes it is Asian run but we found they couldn't do enough for you, we ran out of sugar, and they were happy to give us more , also wanted a t-towel was hard for the woman to understand but eventually after her son (l presume ) explained she happily brought us some, there is a language problem with some staff (cleaners ) but the managers ; no problem, Its a big place and there were 2 busloads of tourists there while we were there , we stayed 2 nights, and there wasn't a problem, no noise . Place is quiet, wi-fi was good, there is a restaurant on site if you choose, and heating and cooling. We did have a fridge and coffee making facilities. I would happily stay there again if in the area....

As basic as it gets. Would be easy to improve. A/c remote dead needed batteries. Put a door mat down to wipe wet shoes. A bedside light. A tv which doesn't require binoculars to view from bed. And a rug in the bathroom and toilet floor so you don't freeze your feet on the tiles. Would I recommend? If you're on a budget $120/night yeah nah!
C H — Google review
Very basic room. Bathroom way too small and the shower over the bath is difficult for those with limited mobility. No instructions for how to get the TV working. 2 remotes is confusing. No access to free to air TV. Limited information in the room re amenities etc. Would not return.
Rae P — Google review
Upon arrival, noted that some kitchen supplies were missing which we had to chase from reception. Kitchen floor had oil residue and was slippery. Was given a disability access room without request. TV was very complex to use and no instructions on how to. Bathroom/shower whilst modernised had blocked drains resulting in flooding and unuse of bathroom afterwards. Management were hardly at reception and hard to reach. Very disappointed. Advertisement did not meet expectations.
Bernadette D — Google review
Regretfully, I didn’t get his name, but the younger gentleman that was working reception when I checked in this afternoon was easily one of the friendliest, most accommodating front-end hotel staff that I have ever dealt with. Upon arrival, I was greeted with a warm welcome and the check in process was seamless. He promptly got me my key and showed me exactly where to go. Once I got to my room I noticed that it was still being cleaned by staff, so I went back into the front lobby to wait out the quick 30 minutes that the cleaning staff said they needed to complete the job - No problem at all on my end as I had some things to work on my phone anyway. I was sat there for only about 5 minutes before the gentleman at the front counter asked if everything was okay, and I let him know that the cleaning staff was just finishing up the room. He immediately went to his computer to re-room me into one that had already been prepared, But I let him know that I don’t mind waiting as I had some things to get done anyway. He then proceeded to offer me a refreshment and asked if I’d like the fire turned on in the dining area to keep warm. 10/10 guest service. I hope this young man gets the recognition that he deserves. Te Anau is a small town and I can believe that finding standout staff like this guy is hard to come by. Thank you for hosting me, and I look forward to recommending The Village Inn to anyone that plans to visit Te Anau.

This place is AMAZING. Fantastic theme, clean tidy and beautil rooms with a lively bathroom. Shower had good pressure and was clean and lovely, the mirror was so high tech and amazing. The toilet even had a seal over it to say it had been cleaned and sanitised. These people know how to run a beautiful, fun hotel. I had recently stayed at the Fiordland Hotel which was terrible, this place really saved the day. I will be telling everyone to stay here id they are visiting Te Anau. Thank you for a lovely time!!

Really nice place to stay in Te Annau. Our unit was very spacious and exceedingly clean. Very well equipped. I utilized the grill on the lawn area and even borrowed some tennis racquets to play with my kids.

Awesome place! The rooms were super spacious, very clean, lovely and warm and had everything you could possibly need. The bed was very comfortable, and the towels were fluffy and fresh. Check-in was a breeze which made the whole experience even better. Plus, it’s in a great location, just a short walk to town. Highly recommended!

We made a stop on our way to Milford Sound in this lovely motel and received a very hospitable attention. Not only did Karen give us an upgrade as we told her we are honeymooning, but also gave us some helpful advice for our trip. The beds were really comfortable and the room was very well equiped. 10/10 would recommend!

I loved this hotel, the room had everything that I needed, it was quite spacious and very comfortable and was spotlessly clean. The bed was extremely comfortable and very nice linen. I would stay here again. It was a short 5 minute walk through a delightful park to the shops.

The room was perfect. It was clean and warm. The beds were very comfy and warm. The beds had electric blankets on them, but we didn't need them on as the mattress topper and duvet kept as toasty and warm. We had a room upstairs with a balcony, where even though it was cold outside, I sat and had my morning coffee listening to the birds singing. The shower was great. The little extras made it perfect, such as a cute wee bag of lollies, wee biscutes, make wipes, a big tv. My only criticism is we had to buy or own milk for the coffee, tea, and hot chocolate they provided. But with the supermarket so close it wasn't an issue

Absolutely loved our stay at ASURE. They went over the top to make sure we had everything we needed (including a late night find for a clothes rack to dry our clothes). Will definitely stay here again! :)

Alpine View Motel is a charming and unpretentious accommodation option that offers simple studios and apartments with stunning lake views. The motel provides affordable and comfortable rooms suitable for various group sizes, including families. Guests can choose from One-Bedroom Units with a lounge, complete with a kitchen and bathroom, or opt for the spacious Three-Bedroom Unit.
I loved this motel! A much needed break from factory line hotels, with a room worth a full paragraph--bar stools, plastic imprint wall paper, kitchen equipment--it's all here! The bed was clean and strong. A bag of cookies from the slightly saccharine but lovely John at the front desk was an added treat.
Nick R — Google review
Pros: Good location, can walk to main strip, parking available, kitchen is well equipped for heating meals, nice having a separate bedroom for rest. Cons: Very dated building, the carpet seems original and the room caused my asthma to flare likely from dust, but also because someone was smoking outside our bathroom and it was just pouring into our room through the window. The radiators aren’t connected anymore so there is only an electric heater in the living area which wasn’t enough to comfortably warm the whole apartment. Would I stay again? No
Mia J — Google review
Room is spacious and the ensuite kitchen comes with enough appliances and plates. Room may look a little old. Comes with Netflix! Good to chill for the night! There is play ground as well. Believe will be family friendly place.

We stayed in a Large Family Apartment, and it exceeded expectations in every way. It had a fully equipped kitchen (with oven, microwave, toaster, and more), clean and spacious bathroom, and even a Smart TV with Netflix and YouTube—perfect for winding down after a long drive. Beds were warm and comfortable, and we loved the extra touches like electric blankets and fresh towels. It was also great to have a proper dining and lounge area, which made it feel like a home rather than just a motel room. Located in a quiet area but still close to town and a perfect base before heading to Milford Sound. This was hands down the best value-for-money stay of our trip.
Martina S — Google review
We had a great stay here. The room was very spacious with a small kitchen and some cooking utensils. The owner was very kind and friendly. Relatively close to local groceries, 3 mins drive (8-10 mins walk) and 5 mins walk to a coin laundry and some options for good local coffee in the area. If you're doing a road trip to Milford Sound and don't want to do a 5-hour straight drive from Queenstown, consider stopping by Te Anau for a night or two.

Aden Motel is a charming 12-unit accommodation in Te Anau, known for its attention to detail and vibrant decor. The rooms feature colorful comforters, modern bathrooms, and artistic wall murals. Most units offer full kitchens for self-catering, with the option of using a barbecue during the summer. Additionally, the motel offers studio, 1-bedroom, and 2-bedroom apartments just a short walk from the lake.
Aden motel is a great place to stay, clean and rooms look like they’ve recently been renovated. We stayed in the king room, very spacious, 2 seater couch and 4 seat dining table and chairs, small kitchen. Comfy bed. Heater in the shower was appreciated. Easy parking outside room, lovely helpful manager.

We had a lovely stay at this motel. The rooms are clean and comfortable with lots of parking. The owner is very friendly and gave us great restaurant and sight seeing recommendations that made our trip much better. We also loved the 2 pups, Holly and Molly.

Can’t fault this place . After staying at a disaster place the night before , we came to Aden where Irene is absolutely amazing and they have two gorgeous doggy’s roaming around . The room was recently renovated , it felt homely and was classy. We loved the extra touch of being shown the room personally and the aircon was already on as it was a cold day . The little extras were just wonderful . The coffee maker etc . Totally worth the price and can’t wait to come back

My husband and I had a great stay at the Aden Motel. From check in and being personally shown to our room by Irene and her cute little dog where she went through all it's facilities, through to checkout the staff were very friendly and informative on the local area. The bed was very comfortable, the shower powerful (big plus for me), and the small kitchenette was a great addition for us to prepare a simple breakfast, coffee's and to heat up some food in. The rooms themselves have more of a homely feel, which we really enjoyed, but if you're more into a cookie cutter - large motel/hotel style vibed room then this may not be the motel for you. Irene and her husband are so visably proud of their motel, and for good reason.
G W — Google review
This was the best place we stayed during our trip. The owner was incredibly kind. We arrived very late that night and didn’t realize their front desk had already closed, but the owner left a light on for us and turned on the heater, so after a long, cold day, we could immediately rest in a warm and cozy room. You can tell from the little details in the room that they put a lot of thought and care into everything — we truly felt that they care more about their guests’ experience than just making money. And Molly (the dog) is super adorable. We will definitely come back again!

so where to start, calling the motel dated would be nice, shower run cold quickly during second shower each day, mold in shower, noise heat pump but not as noisy as the room next door heat pump. on the good side it was clean but 2 knives 2 forks etc nothing extra. overview far too expensive for what it was, and messages on the walls warning what not to do

The Edgewater Motel in Te Anau offers unfussy rooms with kitchenettes and free Wi-Fi, along with a coin-operated laundry and a BBQ area. Situated on the edge of Lake Te Anau, it provides easy access to attractions like the Firefly Cave and the supermarket. The spacious rooms can accommodate up to six people and come equipped with amenities such as pre-heating, rice cookers, and hot pots. While some rooms feature electric blankets, others do not.
This is a cute little motel with so many extras. The staff were so kind and the room had a little kitchen, hot plate duo, dishes, refrigerator/freezer in the room. Two of the beds had heated blankets which was nice in the morning. The tv had a lot of channels and we were able to sign into our Netflix. The rooms, beds, bathroom and kitchen were all clean. The beds were comfy and the curtains were nice and thick keeping the morning light out allowing my children to sleep in.
Kristy P — Google review
Stayed with family in the superior 1 bedroom suite for three nights. The rooms were clean with a spacious enough. Two single beds were placed in the living area and the bedroom had a queen bed. There was also a kitchenette and a counter area with chairs. The beds were comfy, the neighborhood quiet and we had great sleep. Negative points are that the hotel billed my credit card without consultation a day prior to our stay even though I had chosen when booking to pay directly in cash at the property. There was also a surcharge on top for card payment. There was also no one at the reception when we arrived to check-in with just a note stuck to the reception window stating that the card has already been charged for the stay, to help yourself to the room and that this was due to staff shortage.

This was a great motel to stay while we were in Te Anau. The rooms were very comfortable and the kitchen set up was great. The staff were very helpful and understanding when our plans unexpectedly changed. We couldn’t have asked for a better place to stay. Thankyou!

This is by far the most dissapointg place we've stayed in. We were 2 couples staying in "the villa"- It's not more than an old, dirty overpriced apartment. The smell in the flat is not good at all. The floor is sticky. 2 out of 4 lights in the shower are not working. Shower towels has bleach stains on it. furnitures are dirty and stained, Lack of cooking equipment and old broken tools. Dirt in the cabinet.... One of the rooms without even one(!) Electric outlet and the "garden view" from the window is the garbage plastic bags. I would rather stay in a tent and not here, especially in this ridiculous price.
Tslil N — Google review
Ai version with a sense of humor We had a wonderful time exploring Te Anau, but our accommodation was a disaster. We shelled out 670$ for two nights in a so-called budget room. The only thing budget about it was the quality (see the photo of the bathroom). To add insult to injury, they charged our credit card the full amount a day before we arrived, without our consent (we wanted to pay cash or eftpos to avoid fees). The rooms were outdated, the coffee supply was meager, and the hand soap was actually dishwasher liquid (maybe they wanted us to wash the dishes too). The bedroom had two electric blankets, which would have been nice, except one of them had no plug (maybe they wanted us to share). This was the worst motel we have ever stayed in, and we have seen better backpackers.

Clean modern motel with excellent facilities. Nice shower, everything is very clean, kitchen well stoked. Bed comfortable, nice linens. We had pleasant interactions with staff. Great stay and excellent location!

My family and I loved our stay here, it was quiet and comfortable, the staff were very helpful and friendly- this is great value here and we will be looking forward to staying again. My 3 year old daughter left her penguin toy in the room which the staff posted back, excellent service

The motel is well located just across the lake, and has a convenient walking distance to all restaurants and bars in Te Anau. Luckily right after my arrival, the owner took some time to give me recommendations about activities in the area and thanks to her, I could organise at the very last minute an amazing cruise on Doubtful Sound the following day. The room is completely self-contained, modern and very well equipped in the kitchenette. Very nice short stay overall!

Alpenhorn Motel offers modest yet comfortable accommodations with kitchen facilities, BBQ grills, and optional breakfast. While some guests found the rooms basic but clean and comfortable, others appreciated the convenience of on-site laundry and free parking. The motel's proximity to the beautiful lakefront and downtown area was a highlight for many visitors. Some noted that room servicing did not meet expectations, while others enjoyed the quiet location and well-equipped rooms featuring amenities like stoves.
Great little motel with good price too. Location is also good. Hassle free check-in. We like the room we stayed in, #6, spacious, good equipped kitchen, comfortable bed, warm room, dining area. And the laundry (wash & dry) was the best we encountered during our travel.
Marx W — Google review
We stayed for two nights in the Deluxe Family Room at a very reasonable price and had a fantastic experience at Alpenhorn Motel! Our key was ready even two hours before the official check-in time, which was a great convenience. The location was perfect—quiet and peaceful, yet close to attractions and essential amenities. If you're looking for a clean, comfortable, and welcoming place to stay, Alpenhorn Motel is an excellent choice. I would definitely stay here again and highly recommend it to anyone visiting the area!
Sukanta C — Google review
Disappointing.....rooms need a very thorough deep clean.....too many areas to go into detail....and apparently we could not be trusted with a sharp knife to cut tomatoes etc. and as never anyone in reception couldn't get one from there. Goodness knows when fridge last defrosted...... Old and basic is fine but that shouldn't mean poor standards. Come on owners ...have a look at what your cleaners are not doing
Jane — Google review
Great location in quiet street. But you get what you pay for. Don’t expect a luxurious room with everything in perfect working condition and you won’t be disappointed. But if after a cheaper place to stay whilst passing through town, then this motel is fine.
Phillip T — Google review
Very disappointing. The 2 rooms booked by us were clean but shabby, very badly in need of upgrading, tiny poorly equipped kitchen, nothing like that shown in accommodation photos. Noone on site in advertised office hours. Pretty depressing place to stay.
Heather F — Google review
Basic, but clean comfortable rooms. On site laundry (NZ$4 wash, NZ$2 dry). Easy, on-site, free parking. A block from the beautiful lakefront. Walking distance to all of downtown. We really enjoyed our stay in March 2024, and would definitely stay here again.
Stephen A — Google review
Room not as clean as it should be I found rice and and rubbish near the bed. The queen bed had no legs. Was very quiet. Internet was a little patchy
Jo M — Google review
I give 2 stars for hot water and cheapest price you can find. But I would rather pay extra for somewhere else as the bathroom ceiling here is full of mould, it started to get mould in the shower wall as well. They only need to have bigger exhaust fan to get rid of the moisture in the shower then it can be fixed easily but it seems that they just want to let it runs down. Wifi was turned off around 7:30pm (my only pleasurement to be happy about the place). Its because my friend booked this for me, I would rather to spend money to other place, where people really put more efforts in their hospitality and keeping their place to decent level.

The Matai Lodge offers modern and clean rooms with friendly staff and convenient amenities. The park also provides free mountain bikes for exploring the area and has a TV lounge and hot tub for relaxation.
What a place, from the welcome to the continual support through our 2 night stay. This place is magical, value for money and so much to do for families. The hot tub and sauna were amazing with views of the lake as a mum with out her kids it was such a treat. It really catered to everything! Staff second to none - 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 thank you - see you again soon.

We stayed here for a few days to recover from the fast-paced life on the road in our van and take a relaxing break. Choosing Tasman Holiday Park was the best decision. They offer everything from unpowered sites to holiday apartments. The site is clean and well-maintained, and there's also a playground with a trampoline and a chess set. The highlight for adults: a barrel sauna, which is even included in the pitch price! Fantastic! You can also book hot tubs, all very private and perfect for couples looking to relax. The staff is exceptionally friendly and helpful. Together with the family who run the site, you can see that everyone puts their heart and soul into ensuring every guest has a pleasant stay. We had a wonderful rest at this spa campsite and recommend everyone to spend at least one night here. 10/10

We stayed here two nights and had a fantastic time. The queen double room is great: it is spacious, the bed is very good, the shower is good. You can sit outside and inside. There is a table, a microwave and a fridge. The staff is very friendly. It is close to the town center, the waterfront and the RealNZ terminal. The atmosphere on the park is very pleasant. Highly recommended!
Ron B — Google review
We stayed at a powered site. Handy location close to town, lots of kids play areas including a playroom indoors (great for the wet weather we had!). Bathrooms are serviceable but need a deep clean. Half the laundry appliances were out of service or didn’t work properly (eg they ate coins) - the reception staff did note they thought these were getting replaced soon but quite frustrating to have to navigate during our short stay. Staff were very friendly, there were a number of extra amenities on offer (pizza oven, hot tub, etc) and overall it was a good stay.
C V — Google review
This was probably the best camp site I've ever been to. They've not only got great amenities and but put the customer first at every turn- creating a really warm atmosphere. FOR EXAMPLE: Staff were super pleasant. When we arrived, I think it was Justine who greeted us at reception. It was discovered that we had booked the wrong site so she happily moved us to a bigger spot that was more suited for our family at no extra cost. Mike, the Manager would walk around giving out free iceblocks on one day, free lollies the next... stopping to give time to anyone who needed it. Their showers do not cost like other campsites I've been to, and there are no timers- just an encouragement from Mike to enjoy the warm water. Everything was kept to a high standard. Highly recommend!

What an amazing holiday park! Really took me back to my favourite holidays as a kid. We had a powered site and it was busy but still felt spacious. Amazing that you can use the sauna included in the pitch fee (my part-Finnish partner was overjoyed!) Kitchens do get a bit crowded but again still manageable. Shelby & her husband at the front desk were so nice and gave us some great tips around the area!
Chris W — Google review
Amazing staff to match an amazing campsite. Quiet during the day but feels alive in the evening. Perfect for families or couples. Ideal layover to or from Milford sound. A perfect campsite, which has every consideration included, from bbq to pizza oven to play area. It's even includes detergent in with the washing machines. We will be coming back.
Freddie R — Google review
We had a lovely stay at Te Anau Tasman Holiday Parks. When the road to Milford Sound was closed, we had to extend our stay and they kindly offered us the 3-for-2 nights deal, very thoughtful. The park’s central location is great. Showers are hot and powerful. The only downside was cleanliness: the ladies’ bathroom has a melted hair dryer (?) and leaking taps, so everything is always wet and the kitchen gets very messy after busy times. The washing machines include washing powder, which is convenient, but if you want to use your own detergent (like for wool), there’s only one machine available, so often you have to wait. Overall, a convenient spot with caring staff and a great location.

Te Anau Top 10 Holiday Park is a fantastic choice for campervan travelers or those on a budget. The park offers powered sites with plenty of sun, great facilities, and a cozy shared lounge with a fireplace for winter evenings. Additionally, reasonably priced cabins are available. Guests appreciate the polite and helpful staff, spacious accommodations, clean facilities including kitchen and dining areas, as well as tidy toilets with unlimited hot baths.
Sites are pretty little if you have a family and plan on staying for a while, but there is a playground for the kids. Just not anywhere to sit on your deck chair and read. Bathrooms are clean and great showers.
Andy — Google review
Quite disappointed with this superior top 10. Small sites. Reception did not have change for the laundry which was $6 each (more expensive than other places) and the dryer did not dry our clothes. Other places have offered coins at reception or had tap and go which is handy for overseas visitors. Disappointing when you are on holiday and limited time to do laundry. Just doesn’t compare to the other top 10’s we have visited.
Ianthe G — Google review
I can’t express how amazing this holiday park is. The amenities are exactly what you’d expect for the price and location. Where Te Anau truly stands out from other holiday parks is the service from the staff. When Milford Road was closed, they turned what could have been a terrible situation into just another normal day. I genuinely believe they are simply good people. What they did for me is what they would do for anyone—and that kind of service is priceless. It’s something you rarely see anymore, and I’m still in shock that I stumbled into it. The front desk staff member, let’s call her Ms. B, new exactly what I needed before I even asked. I know how rare that trait is. Without her, the charm and quality of this holiday park would immediately drop. If the owner sees this, I hope you’re doing everything possible to make sure Ms. B and Ms. S (she’s also a treasure) feel valued and appreciated. Because I’ll say it again: they are the reason I book all my holidays with Top10. TL;DR – If you’re a good person, you’ll have a great time staying here.

Te Anau Top 10 is by far one of the nicest Holiday Parks I’ve stayed at! Even though there was a power outage during my stay, the whole team went above and beyond to make it a memorable experience. The owners even prepared breakfast and dinner for everyone who wanted to join. They managed to get the hot showers working again, made sure every guest had enough blankets, and kept a cozy fire going in the common room. Everything was clean and well looked after, and the shops and town center are just a 5-minute walk away. A big compliment to the whole team and the owners for their amazing effort and genuine hospitality!!

I stayed 3 nights here, 2 of which were in a cabin because my campervan had issues which made it uncomfortable to stay in. Guests can take advantage of a well-equipped guest kitchen, complete with all the essentials like toasters and rice cookers, making meal prep a breeze. The hostel also features inviting communal spaces including a cozy terrace and clean shower facilities.
Very welcoming, had all the facilities you’d need and is in a great location. Great hot showers, super clean, cosy atmosphere in the communal area and large kitchen area with lots of storage space. The only downside was the building walls were quite thin so you can hear doors closing from the rooms but that’s all part of the travelling lifestyle and sound cancelling headphones were useful. :)

I stayed here only 1 night but the staff were really helpful and assisted in me booking my trip to doubtful sound which was great. I also got a 4 bed room in a small annex outside the mail building with its own kitchen and bathroom and it was so lovely to wake up early and use my own little kitchen. The place had a really nice garden area to hang out. I wish i had stayed longer actually as this was also within walking distance to a lot of areas.

I've been in 3 different YHA hostels in NZ during my NZ trip and this was the best one. Great location, stores 1 min walk, the lake is 1 min walk. The hostel provides plenty of information materials about hikes. There is a nice outside terrace and the whole hostel area looks very nice. The kitchen is clean and our room was also very nice and clean. No noisy people. Thanks!
Maria D — Google review
This was a great hostel. Friendly staff, good clean facilities. Unfortunately the rooms get way too hot. I was in an 8 person dorm and it had one small window that only opened about 1/4 of the way. The rooms need bigger windows that open all the way or better yet multiple windows. They also need to set up some fans. It was a warm day and at night the outside temperature was pleasant. I was laying there in my underwear sweating and did not get enough sleep. Had it been a hotter day, it would have been unbearable. I will not stay at this hostel again solely due to this issue. If the weather is cool/cold, then this is a 5 star hostel.

Very friendly, helpful reception staff (we had to change our booking last minute). Comfortable dorm beds and good kitchen facilities, with large communal area. Clean toilets and shower, however only two showers on our floor (one for each sex) which meant you had to go at the right time.

Nice place, close to the town center, very clean, comfortable with everything: rooms, kitchen, tv room, hot shower, clean toilets, living room. The people at the reception are nice, they allowed me to phone my next hostel and to stay the last day until 12:00 to cook myself a lunch. The rooms are a little bit small but it was very not a problem.

Lovely place to stay! Bed was cozy, nice clean showers, cozy terrace and really nice kitchen. There was nothing I couldn't find in the kitchen, had toaster, oven, rice cookers, microwave and lots of utensils. There were 4 sinks so I didn't have to wait to do dishes even though there were pretty many people cooking at the same time. Free laundry powder and 5GB wifi were great as well. We could fully enjoy our stay in Te Anau thx to this cozy backpacker!:) thanks a lot❤️

Friendly and helpful staff. Best shower I've ever had! Great kitchen, particularly that the staff clean it up daily. Loved the garden herbs for guest use. We would stay here again.

Amber Court Motel is a modern accommodation located in a peaceful area, just a short walk from Lake Te Anau. The motel offers comfortable units with kitchenette facilities, satellite TV, and electric blankets. Guests can enjoy amenities such as a guest laundry, BBQs, and 2 hours of free Wi-Fi access daily. The friendly owners provide warm hospitality and ensure that the rooms are clean and well-maintained.
Stayed for 2 nights to visit Milford Sound, it was overall a very comfortable place to sleep in and had plug in heating in rooms. Large and spacious shower and dishes, dishwasher, and kitchen amenities were ready and included. Manager Aaron Liu was nice and gave recommendations of which place to visit. We ultimately chose Milford Sound over Doubtful Sound.

A great place to stay while visiting Te Anau on the Sounds to Sounds Brevet. The staff were very accommodating of my need for a secure spot for my bike and put it in their garage. The rooms are clean, comfortable and have everything you need to make an easy dinner. An easy access and reasonably priced laundry ($2 per wash or dry). Overall a good stay and recommended, but felt the price was a bit high even in peak tourist season.

I stayed at this cute motel for 1 night while staying in The Anau town for the Doubtful Sound Wilderness Cruise tour. There is no parking problem, you can enter the room directly from your vehicle. A spacious and practical room, enough kitchen and supplies for practical food preparation, fast internet, very clean and comfortable beds, the necessary heating and cooling devices in the room, and the fact that it is a cute family business are the features I liked very much. I definitely recommend this motel for your stay.

We had an excellent two-night stay at Amber Court in Te Anau during a Milford Sound day trip and an overnight Doubtful Sound cruise. The room was clean, comfortable, and well-equipped with everything we needed. Aaron was an outstanding host — friendly, helpful, and incredibly accommodating. He kindly allowed us to leave our luggage at the motel while we were on the Doubtful Sound overnight cruise, which was such a relief and made our trip so much easier. The price was very reasonable for our stay. We highly recommend Amber Court for a comfortable and stress-free stay in Te Anau!

Great rooms, lovely and clean. We enjoyed our stay at Amber court, the room was clean and spacious, good facilities, easy and close parking . The only downside was our room was freezing when we arrived and took some time to warm up but once it had warmed up it stayed cosy for the duration of our stay. Close to town centre, would definitely recommend.

Located in the picturesque town of Te Anau, Lakefront Lodge Te Anau offers cozy accommodations with some rooms featuring whirlpool tubs. The property provides free Wi-Fi and parking for guests. The lodge is conveniently situated within walking distance of tours and local amenities, making it a perfect base for exploring the area. Guests can expect well-equipped and clean studio units, along with helpful and knowledgeable staff who can assist in booking excursions.
Beautiful place to stay. Close to everything with a beautiful view. We stayed in the family room for 2 nights with a comfortable lazy boy couch and lazy boy recliner. Room came with a kitchenette, that we didn't use on this trip as the restaurants close by were too tempting. Spa bath in the room is a great touch after a day out exploring the milford sounds in the bitter cold winds. Can't Thank the team enough for the service and commitment they provide to their beautiful lodge.

This place was awesome! I wish we had been able to stay longer. After a long day of traveling my travel companion were exhausted. We came to check in and were greeted with information about dinning options in the area, their breakfast service and room amenities. The breakfast service is great. You pick from a variety of options and they drop it off the evening before. They have a wonderful outside eating area for each room. We enjoyed our breakfast outside then went on our next adventure. Great room with a kitchenette and awesome bathroom.
Gillian A — Google review
Convenient to many Te Anau attractions. The living room had a pretty view of a garden and opened to a patio. We didn't use it due to timing, but loved the option for breakfast delivered to your own little nook in the apartment. The apartment did have a little kitchenette. The lavender in the rooms was a nice personal touch.

Cannot rave enough about this beautiful accommodation. Dianne & Dave were exceptional hosts. Very knowledgeable about their piece of paradise. The rooms were stunning - the warmth, the decor, the furniture, the linen, the location - everything was just perfect. Highly recommend!
Delwyn S — Google review
We wish we could give this accommodation 10/10. Lakefront Lodge is awesome. Their one bedroom/shower room is a suite of rooms big enough to be a small house. There is a full size lounge suite, a dining table and a day bed in the living room along with a separate, well sized bedroom and separate bathroom. They have thought of the little things like a power board to charge everyone’s many devices, a little chocolate on the pillow (nothing earth shattering, but a gentle and sweet touch). The sreception person we met, Kim, was delightful, going out of their way to ensure we were settled and happy. The lodge is well placed to walk into the main cafe and shops area and the town itself is delightful. We consider ourselves very fortunate to have booked Lakefront Lodge. If we travel here again we would not stay anywhere else.
Mark W — Google review
It’s been many months since my visit to this hotel and this ridiculously beautiful country. The lodge was just beautifully decorated - think a fully decked out studio apartment, tastefully decorated and greeted by a very warm staff member. Each room gets 1 parking spot and given how small the town is, everything is walking distance, including the lake and some spots for food.
Ashwin V — Google review
Great motel right on the waterfront and a short walk to the main street. We were able to book a trip to Milford Sound at the front desk. The rooms were comfortable and had cooking facilities.

Stayed at Red Tussock Motel with family (2 Adults, 2 Kids) for 2 nights in early January. Overall accommodation excellent. Very clean and well equipped. Perfect for our family. Full credit to hotel manager who also provided great advice on touring Milford Sound and other wonderful recommendations for things to do and places to eat in Te Anau. Highly recommend.

Really enjoyed my stay here. Black out curtains, curtain over the glass entry door, soft close drawers in the kitchen, little patio area. A “night light” in the bathroom, light switches were lit, so easy to find. Large shower.

Well located with parking slots, spacious rooms, clean and comfortable. Special shout out to Robin the manager, kind and helpful - we booked the wrong dates and he helped us rectify and got us a room for the same day, during the peak season. He also knows very well the area and will give you tips about your trip to Milford Sound or Kepler track - or even restaurants in Te Anau.

A great welcome from Luke who upgraded us as they were very quiet. Room was clean and comfortable, all the cooking equipment required. Good location.

Robin the manager is welcoming and friendly. Staying for a night is worth your money. Very clean room, everything has been thought of, like a complete kitchen set and a small light in the bathroom that will switch on automatically when you go there in the dark. Will be back !!

Guests appreciate the cleanliness, warmth, and convenience of these accommodations. The family-owned property boasts friendly hosts who provide exceptional service and even have adorable pets on-site.
We had a wonderful stay at the Birchwood Cottages! Our cottage had all the conveniences and comfort to feel like a home away from home. The genetleman in the front office was very friendly and helpful, it was a pleasure to chat with him. We also appreciated the laundry facilities on site — definitely a plus while road tripping the island.
Anne-Marie — Google review
The cottage itself was reasonable, though we were quite turned off by a member of the staff. We weren’t told checkout was at 10AM so were still in the room after this time, and when she came by to clean she got quite upset with us. This went on for about 2 minutes and when we tried to calmly explain we weren’t aware of the checkout time and were met with responses such as “oh COME ON!” and arguments for why she thought we should have known - which was quite odd. It’s a shame because the man at check in was quite lovely. Hopefully he can coach the rest of his staff on how to interact with customers

Lovely stay, 2 heatpumps and house was warm on arrival, comfy beds and quiet area. Recommend for bigger groups. Thanks for having us.
Lucille E — Google review
Our stand alone unit was everything we needed. Shower had good pressure, bed was cozy and comfy, and the kitchen was well equipped: we made coffee on our own and grilled out one night with no trouble. There is a butcher and coffee shop very near by, so we really had everything we could need.
Sunshine L — Google review
We had a lovely stay in the cottages. Everything was cozy, comfortable, and clean. And our hosts were so delightful. Even though our cottage was closest to the road, the plants and shrubs all around blocked any noise and we felt very secluded. Very comfortable bed and linens plus the efficient heaters were welcomed after a stormy day at Milford Sound. Fresh milk for tea was also an added surprise.
Allison T — Google review
It is a family business and the host is super friendly. They have a lovely dog Bella will enjoy your pat. Barcaddi is the lovely three colour cat. Everything in the room is very clean, sufficient space, kitchen, shower, washing machine. It is a very good deal to stay as a group or family. Very close to town by walk.
EC C — Google review
We stayed in a one bedroom cottage. Gas stove was great, heating was excellent, baby cot was free. This accommodation had nice little touches that others don't, which makes it feel homely - bath robes, paper hand towels, dishwashing liquid, etc. Our cottage was facing the road, but it was a quiet area, so noise wasn't a problem. Coaches to the Sounds depart from Miro St in the town centre, which is actually only 10min walk.
Ken T — Google review
We had a 3 bdrm cottage at a very reasonable price. Very clean and confortable. Leonie is a lovely lady and welcomed us with a big smile. A home away from home. And the loaded apple tree was a bonus. Thank you for making us welcome.

The inviting atmosphere is enhanced by the warmth of your gracious hosts, Bob and Maxine, who go above and beyond to ensure guests feel at home.
This place is the best hostel I have ever visited. Bob and Maxine are always checking in on you and introducing you to other guests to build friendships. Bob and Maxine both have loads of stories to share with you as well. The facilities are all top notch and always clean, and the kitchen/lounge open area is perfect for cooking, hanging out, playing games, and making friends. Every hostel in New Zealand should try to mimic what Bob and Maxine have done.

It was the best I've ever seen. Everything was well prepared, clean and lovely. And the harmony of everything with nature was perfect. Although it was a short time, I really enjoyed my stay. I am truly sorry for being so late in checking in. I will be very careful from now on. I hope you both stay healthy and happy in the future. I'm sorry, and thank you so much. Thank you for creating, operating, and managing such a great space.

Bob and Maxine are the most wonderful hosts! My husband and I stayed in the double room in the house, and Maxine was so sweet telling us stories and doing little favors for us every day. The hostel building is great, Bob makes a toasty fire every day, and the kitchen is well stocked and easy to cook a good meal it. They have pears, apples, feijoas, and eggs out whenever possible, loads of great couches and comfy chairs to lounge around it. They have laundry as well. The location is lovely, it’s a little outside of town but easy to drive in and you can always borrow a bike if you’d rather. We can’t wait to return and use this place as a base for doing some multi day great walks, we know we’ll be so well taken care of by Bob and Maxine!

Bob & Maxine’s is hands down one of the best backpackers I’ve stayed in & I’ve stayed in heaps of backpackers. Amazing hosts & they are so helpful. The space itself was so cozy, clean & relaxing. Feeding the alpacas was my highlight but aside from that they’ve got awesome bikes to use, washer/dryer, super functional kitchen, clean bathrooms & even the beds were incredibly comfy! Good price, good location; felt like home!
Amy A — Google review
A lovely place to stay, best hostel we had on south island. We planned to do three nights, but the owners were so lovely that we stayed for one more. We truly felt at home. It is a bit far from the city centre, so if you're travelling with intercity, there is a small walk to make. But then you have free bikes to roam around during your stay, so it's not a problem. Just leave in the morning on your last day, they don't like you using the kitchen for lunch...
Julien T — Google review
This place is an absolute gem. My stay was worth every cent and I wish I could've stayed longer. Bob and Maxine both put a lot of time and energy into keeping the place running at such a high quality and it definitely shows. The place is about a 20 minute walk out of town (completely flat ground easy walk) but Bob was an absolute legend and helped me out with a lift because he was already in town and my bags were quite heavy. Just one example of the incredible service I got while staying here. It also just happened to be the place where I met the best bunch of like minded people I would spend the next week with further along in Queenstown. Thanks again Bob and Maxine!

We had a lovely 2-night stay at this charming bed and breakfast in Te Anau during April 2025. The rooms were absolutely immaculate—clean, cozy, and thoughtfully maintained. Each morning, we were treated to a delicious breakfast that made a perfect start to our days. What made our stay truly special were the hosts—a wonderful couple who were incredibly friendly and welcoming. Our 3-year-old daughter had such a great time playing with their daughter and son, especially bouncing away on the trampoline in the backyard. It felt like a home away from home. If we ever return to Te Anau, we would definitely choose to stay here again. Highly recommended for families looking for a warm, relaxed, and memorable experience!

The room was clean, charming, located in a safe and calm neighbourhood within a 5 minutes walking distance from the city center. Te Anau and especially this B&B was our highlight on our NZ trip so far. Derek was very charming and didn't even hesitate to serve us a delicious breakfast in the very early morning. He even booked our trip the next day to Milford Sound - What a service! The outside whirlpool was free to use and helped us relaxing a lot. It was like a dream - Can't recommend it enough. Terrific place as long as you realise it’s a homestay/backpackers. Big kitchen that you can cook in. The lounge is comfy with games and magazines. Two dining areas. Two bathrooms. Very very clean accommodation. Super helpful with tips and recommendations. Be aware that if there are children staying in other rooms, they may be noisy. I had ear plugs so it was fine for me. Recommended accommodation for mates travelling together, young families, solo travellers. Maybe not suited to couples wanting secluded, relaxing stay. But this area is all about activity which is why this accommodation is so needed in a town like this.

The Intercity Te Anau stop serves as a convenient gateway for travelers exploring the stunning landscapes of New Zealand. The bus journey to this picturesque town typically lasts between 2.5 to 3 hours, making it an accessible option for those venturing into the region. Upon arrival at the Te Anau bus stop, visitors have a couple of choices: they can enjoy a leisurely 30-minute walk (approximately 2.

Wish I could give them 0 stars, Had a booking two weeks in advance that was cancelled just over 24hrs before my bus. I’m saying 24hrs but that’s only because my bus was at 5:30pm and they cancelled 3:30pm the day before - it’s more like less than 24hrs before most other options for travel. This bus was to get me to the airport to catch my flight home to Canada. Called them to try and figure it out, they wouldn’t tell me why the bus was cancelled, they didn’t seem to care that there were almost 0 other options for me to make it back to the airport, and they couldn’t put me in contact with any of the bus companies that they hire from. I eventually spoke to someone who told me that even if I did contact the bus companies I would just be calling the same call center, even though I was told that the bus company were the ones who cancelled which doesn’t make any sense. The only other available option is a bus 40$ more expensive per person (we are 2) and they wouldn’t provide any extra compensation even though they are clearly not paying a bus driver or bus company for that day. They didn’t even have any recommendations or options for other possible busses, like at least be ready to help people find another way if you’re going to cancel their bus on such short notice Very disappointing service, not very pleasant to deal with, and extremely inconsiderate. Book first with any other alternative PLEASE!

I hate to do this but this was unacceptable, texting and driving while being in charge of a full bus of passengers from Te Anau to Queenstown. This was so dangerous. Our bus driver did this serval times, and sometimes would place his phone down on the right and keep turning to it. He crossed the street lines several times while doing this. Just unacceptable.
