HONGŪ CAFE is situated just a short distance from Tobu-Nikko Station, near the entrance to Nikko's temple district. The cafe is housed in a beautifully renovated ancient folk house that served as a shrine office and residence for former priests over 300 years ago. The interior features lovely counter seats and flooring made from sacred Nikko Cedar, while the walls have been meticulously restored by skilled craftsmen.
We enjoyed our meal here. The location was convenient for us since we were short on time. The service was very kind and quick and we both enjoyed our lunch. My favorite part of the restaurant was the atmosphere it was clean and nicely decorated even the women’s bathroom had added extra touches of decor that I appreciated.

Japanese local style. Cozy but not so friendly. Maybe they are too busy. They provide an English menu. I ordered Matcha latte and hot chocolate. They both are a bit too sweet for me. The matcha they use is not that high quality. Nothing special. Light smell and no after taste. It’s a good place to just sit and relax. 1 person/order
PuAy J — Google review
Matcha pudding was delicious. Paired with matcha latte, not too sweet, loved it. The ambience is very relaxing with good background music. It very close to shinkyo station and great place to take a break after hike to all the shrines
Herlina H — Google review
Great coffee and matcha with great views if you can come early and grab a seat around the perimeter
BW Z — Google review
Vibes here were immaculate. You enter past the UNESCO stone sign and up the stairs to the right is this cafe tucked away. You take your shoes off and put on one of their offered slippers and order at the counter or take a seat and press the call button when you're ready to order. Many drink options, I for the iced hazelnut latte and matcha latte both with soy milk because I'm vegan. So grateful when a place offers soy milk, it's my favorite! The coffee was strong and the drink was delicious. The matcha one was surprisingly a bit sweet but that's ok for me. Inside is so fun with many options for seating, a couch, chairs, stools. So fun!
M R — Google review
Lovely cafe surrounded by huge ancient trees. Very cosy, with indoor and outdoor seating. Great for cold rainy days and warm sunny days. Very friendly staff that speak English. There's also an English menu. The food was good and the coffee was dark.
Juan S — Google review
Great matcha and coffee and the outdoor seating was beautiful. The staffs however were a let down. Didn’t carry the usual Japanese hospitality. Not friendly nor welcoming
Iris Y — Google review
Lovely little cafe set on the way up to the shrine. English speaking staff and English menu available. Matcha, coffee and snacks were very good. Only reason for 4* is that it is on the pricey side.

Coffee shop
Meiji Yakata Cake Shop is a charming pastry shop conveniently located near Tobu and JR stations in Nikko. The shop is known for its delightful banana and chocolate cup, cheesecake, and mousse. Visitors can also enjoy a relaxing cafe experience on the second floor of the cute house. The specialty here is the famous rare cheesecake, which stands out for its perfect balance of creaminess and sweetness.
The cake shop specialize in cheesecake, located in front of Tobu-Nikko station. Meji Yakata is serving one of the best Cheesecake you will ever experienced, not only that they selling cake. But there also more on variety of menus from cake to cookies and many more on French Pâtisserie. The famous rare cheesecake is really amazingly delicious, quality of the cream cheese that they used and ways of making, it's so special not too sweet and creamy is completely perfect. This place is a good place to grab some Pâtisserie to bring back to your friends, is good place to visit in Nikko.
Mrjoey15 — Google review
We loved the ambience of the shop and it's right beside the station. The bottled cheesecake we tried was hella tasty and I loved the little bottle it came in.
Prajwoli S — Google review
Visit of Nikko itself is a great experience. And you can make it even better if you visit this cake shop. Coffee is better than one would expect from the coffee machine they have and the cakes are delicious! It’s a pity that you cannot have just a slice of everything when you eat in, but there are options and I recommend to share a bigger cake.
Ondrej M — Google review
Cute place to grab a coffee or a cheesecake snack. We had “cheesecake drink” - their specialty. More than a drink was a yogurt ice cream. It wasn’t very sweet (which I personally like). I would have liked perhaps a contrasted flavor. Overall, is a very cute place and it is next to the station.
Marina F — Google review
Western setting with western music at the back ground. Ordered rare cheesecake and a cheesecake. Good food, and I think a bit expensive. Again tourist area with mark up price. Cocoa (supposed to be hot chocolate) is pure cocoa. No milk. That would be additional payment for milk 😬 Location is just next to Tobu Nikko station. Good place to wind down while waiting for the train.
MT — Google review
The cheese cake is so delicious!! Creamy on the inside and sour on the outside. The yoghurt drink’s size is big! And the texture of it is same as the cake but drinkable. Strongly recommend this shops cheese cake and yoghurt drink. It only cost round ¥1110. Hope this helps
Brianna L — Google review
My husband and I tried to sit down for a slice of cake and coffee here. They would not let us buy a slice of cake. When we bought a whole cake they refused to let us go upstairs to eat it. The cheese cake itself is a prepackaged, frozen, piece of cardboard that was apparently shipped from Denmark. Do Not Go Here!
Ray S — Google review
They cheese cake is delicious. They offer whole cheese cake in large and small sizes. The taste, it’s delicious, except for the frosting: it’s too sour. But I agree it’s their unique recipe. It doesn’t spoil the rate, just adds a sour note, that I don’t like on my cheese cake. Also the dine in option ends by 5:30 PM.

The cafe offers a unique experience as it is situated near the picturesque Shinkyo Bridge, allowing visitors to take in the stunning natural scenery of Nikko, a designated World Heritage site and an Important Cultural Property of Japan.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ What an amazing café in Nikko! From the moment we walked in, we were welcomed by a cozy and inviting atmosphere that made us feel right at home. The barista’s skills were exceptional—each drink was crafted to perfection. The flavors were rich, balanced, and absolutely delicious. Beyond the drinks, the vibe of the place was incredible. Whether you’re looking for a relaxing spot to unwind or a stylish café to enjoy great conversations, this is the perfect place. A must-visit if you’re in Nikko!

Curry and Omurice sets were heavenly! Staff was very attentive and courteous. Would recommend the cafe for a satisfying meal when visiting Nikko.

Delicious cake and tea and coffee! We went here for lunch since we were told it was a great lunch spot. I wouldn't recommend it for that, since they had only two dishes, but the food was excellent and the place is gorgeous!
Mariah M — Google review
Nikko Coffee has a great vibe to it. The food is delicious. We had the lunch set (meal, drink and cake). The galette and the omurice were both very good. The cake was a nice treat, too.
Dave J — Google review
This cafe/restaurant is located in a traditional Japanese house. It's dimly lit inside, but the cuisine is clearly visible and delicious. It's best to order a set menu, which includes a main course, dessert, and a drink of your choice. The staff is polite and very helpful. You can also buy coffee on-site, which they roast and grind themselves. I recommend it to anyone looking to unwind after the attractions of Nikko.
Grzesio88 — Google review
We loved the esthetics of the place and the slow brewery concept of taking the correct time to prepare your optimal tea or special coffee. I took an Irish coffee and it was perfect! My husband a tea with a cake combo and it was delicious. We find the place a bit pricy but the proportions of the cake and tea 🫖 pots are in equilibrium. The girl that served us spoke very little English and wasn’t too friendly but maybe I should read her as just shy.
Sintje M — Google review
A great spot to take a break while visiting Nikko! While the food was on the more expensive side, the taste and quality more than made up for it!
Aaron M — Google review
We came here thinking it was the Nikko Coffee that serves good matcha however this place doesn’t have it on their menu. The food was overpriced and not great. The curry sauce was good but we got 3 small pieces of meat only. Staff seemed not very happy. Forced to get a drink at least with your meal and cannot swap it for dessert so I got all 3 but the chocolate cake left more to be desired sadly. Wouldn’t come again. Save your money!

Returning to nikko for the first time in 5 years and made sure to visit this cafe again! What a wonderful, quirky place. A lovely place to spend an hour or so. Coffee is great and so is the cheesecake. Owner is extremely hospitable and kind, made us feel very welcome.

Owner is very friendly and welcoming. She is the only one in the cafe who cook and make coffee for us with love😋. Love the yuba with brown rice it's so healthy with no oil. Cafe latte just so so. Quiet and peaceful ambience in the cafe. Price is not cheap but most restaurant and cafe here are around this price.

We popped in on a rainy day to get some warm coffee. We felt welcome and loved - the owner is the kindest. Comfortable, relaxing seating, full-bodied Nikko blend coffee, light, healthy meal, and a delicious dessert with Yoba. We didn't want to leave this place!

Super cool little cafe. Lots of mixed-matched furniture giving it a vibing feel. Also has a view of the main street and surrounding mountains. The waitress was lovely and made me feel comfortable. The coffee and food was absolutely amazing!

Fantastic ham and cheese sandwich, delicately flavoured soup and a delicious New York cheesecake. Large hot chocolates too. One of the nicest lunches I have had for a long time
Fay M — Google review
Love this cafe, effortlessly blends traditional local Japanese food (yuba on rice), good coffee and an artsy fitout. I have been once in 2014 and was luckily enough to go back this year in 2023. Would recommend anyone visiting Nikko to visit for lunch or a coffee.
James L — Google review
A warm and relax cafe with kind owner. The bowl of rice topped yuba is so tasty and coffee also perfect.
Cic1 C — Google review
The place was very cozy and quiet. They played beautiful music from vinyls and there was no plastic (everything was wood, glass, metal etc), which gave the place a nice touch. The food and drinks were fresh and delicious (especially the cheesecake). Their staff was very friendly and nice :)

Bar de Nikko is a cozy spot that specializes in omurice, a popular Japanese dish featuring omelette over fried rice. The customizable options include sauces like curry or cheese, and local flavors such as yuba. The presentation of the dishes is described as beautiful and elevates the home-cooked staple to an artful level. Despite its small size, the bartender/cook creates dishes with both aesthetic appeal and delicious flavors.
A lovely little side spot for Omurice (the only option). You can have it with meatballs or with curry sauce. Some good beers, and excellent single malt whiskies if you want to splash the cash.
Chris H — Google review
There are two omurice rice options, one with a demi glace sauce and the other is tomato based. We ordered one of each. The tomato-based sauce was on the sweet side, but the demi glace sauce was more savory and the meatballs it came with were quite tender and flavorful. Get that one! It's only bar seating and we went before closing, so no wait and service was quick. The pickled daikons were fresh and delicious. It was a very satisfying meal.
Angela T — Google review
This was the first time I ever tried omurice and it was sooooo good! I didn’t know what to order and the chef was very friendly and patient and recommended the specialty omurice with the curry option. I love curry so I said yes please. He expertly prepared the dish while I sipped on some lovely red wine. In perfect timing, the dish was presented beautifully and eaten with great itadakimasu 🤗 very yummy and highly recommend going!
Ben S — Google review
✅ Very tasty omurice (rice + omelette + demi glace sauce, you can also add meatballs!) ✅ Friendly owner ✅ Prepared right in front of you which gives a nice and authentic experience
Alexander A — Google review
We stopped by for lunch, and the only two options available were omurice and omurice with meatballs. We chose the one with meatballs, and it was very delicious.
Oytun T — Google review
Simple and great food, the omrice is great (the meatballs are so soft and delicious!) and we fell in love with the daikon and pepper pickles! So good, with the right amount of crunch. Highly recommend this place on a chilly day in Nikko.
May H — Google review
Chill bar with lots of Tapas to go with your drink! The owner recommended a Nikko local brew-I Ro Wa. I ordered the Shabu Shabu pork, grilled pork, yuba, croquette, and the seasonal cherry blossom Omurice with cheese on top! Everything was tasty, with my favorite being the shabu shabu pork!! The owner seems to really like hip hop and r&b :) lots of Beyoncé, Neyo, etc. I’d visit again!
Jennifer C — Google review
Quaint, near the shrine and wonderful food. We did not get the omurice this time as we were not that hungry but we got the picked radish, fried/sautéed chicken and the cheese wontons (made with mozzarella) and it was delicious. Lovely place to rest and relax without a lot of people. We will come back and try the omurice which is supposed to be excellent.

If you're craving a sweet treat after exploring Nikko, make sure to visit Sakaeya Fried Yubamanju at Tobu Nikko Station. This charming souvenir shop has been serving its specialty, the Ageyuba Manju, since 1958. For just 200 yen, you can enjoy this local delicacy consisting of sweet red bean paste wrapped in yuba and fried tempura-style with a sprinkle of sea salt.
On a chilly evening in Nikko, I came across an intriguing shop while waiting for my train and decided to give it a try. The tempura batter was wonderfully crispy, and the salt on the outside perfectly complemented the sweet, soft red bean filling inside. It was so delicious that I ended up buying another. The shop also offers complimentary tea to enjoy with the pastries, adding a nice touch to the experience.
Lok M — Google review
Review of the fried Manju: they sprinkled salt on it, so the first bite will be a bit of an unexpected salty taste, but then the saltiness balances the mushy red bean paste inside. It went super well with the free tea they provided.
Win541 — Google review
I’m not surprised why this place is so popular, the manju was perfect. The manju was not too sweet and with a combination of saltiness which made it perfect. I also loved how they offer complimentary tea to have with the manju. I was in Nikko for 2 days and had the manju 4 times. 11/10 would return.
Tan N — Google review
Strange food for me but its tasty. The outside is crispy and salty because the salt they sprinkle at the top. The filling is not so sweet. Its perfect balance between sweet and salty.

Fried Yuba Buns, a local specialty of Nikko, are a must-try! Crispy on the outside and soft and delicious on the inside. The shop also offers free hot tea to pair with your snack. Each bun costs 250 yen, and for those looking for souvenirs, the shop has a variety of local products available as well. Perfect for a quick bite or a thoughtful gift!
Supphawich ( — Google review
Lovely hot fresh tempura red bean paste "bun" with a cup of free hot tea. A constant queue here. Benches to sit on in front of the shop. And ya, don't feed the pigeons.

I am not lying when I say the fried manju was probably one of the best things I’ve ever eaten. This salty, sweet, crispy and soft treat was delicious. Made even better on a cold and rainy day in Nikko. Only regret was not buying two, as the owner was closing up when we went back for more. 10/10

Ueshima Coffee Nikko-toshogu-ten is a popular coffee shop known for its mellow aroma and rich, pleasant aftertaste. The cafe takes its coffee seriously, even owning plantations in Jamaica and Hawaii. They use a double flannel drip method to make their coffee. It's a nice spot to relax with a cup of coffee or snack after visiting the Toshogu Shrine.
The rum raisin coffee was just delicious! Probably, someone else makes it, but it's my first drinking the rum rasin coffee. The cheese and ham bread and cheesecake, all scored high. Try it. I only write when it's inspiring food.
David C — Google review
Good cafe to relax during your visit. This is the only chain coffee shop around. Limited seating.

Great little coffee place after wandering around world heritage site for a few hours and needed a break before heading into the museum. Pizza toast set 1270 was very tasty, fresh and hot and just what I needed. Small and busy on Saturday but good table service.
Jo-Anne L — Google review
Good place to rest up but one very expensive place to rest up. Coffee goes up to 700-800yen. Their lemonade soda is like 900yen…. With barely liquid in it because there was a lot of ice. But again, the place is pretty nice to rest up. Just be wary of the high price. Apple pie was good though. As well as the ice cream.
Mira H — Google review
Nice place to stop for coffee or a snack after the Toshogu Shrine. Good air conditioning, nice pork cutlet sandwich, all right coffee. There are plenty of seats, but we came at a crowded time and still had to wait a minute for a table to open up.

Nikko Pudding Tei Main Store is a charming, compact cafe with a rustic ambiance, located just a short walk from Tobu-Nikko Station. This shop specializes in delectable puddings and ice creams made with premium Nikko Kirifuri Kogen Ozasa Ranch cow milk and high-quality Nasu eggs. Housed in a renovated traditional Japanese folk house, the eatery exudes vintage charm and provides an ideal backdrop for capturing memorable photographs.
A famous pudding shop in the Nikko area offering a variety of flavors. The pudding is smooth and perfectly sweet. Personally, the original flavor is the favorite. You can also keep the pudding jars as souvenirs by exchanging the used ones for new empty jars at the shop.
Supphawich ( — Google review
After our first 3 puddings, we walked right back in to buy another 3 because we absolutely loved it that much. Especially the ‘traditional’ flavor. They also had at least 8 other flavors but we only got to try the original, matcha and their in house flavor. Truly a lovely experience having the pudding on their outdoor section whilst enjoying the views of the mountains.
Joshua T — Google review
Easy to pop in and grab a pudding on the way to/from the train stations. We tried the Nikko and strawberry puddings (rated #1 and #2) and as soon as we were finished bought a couple more jars to go. Very delicious and easy to eat! A good snack with lovely packaging. Recommend trying them out if you're in town!
Kanitah K — Google review
Super cute, a lot of fun and delicious pudding with so much creativity to it. There were so many different flavours, but I had to narrow it down to 2 so on this outing I had the coffee and original pudding. The matcha would have been very interesting. When I came there was a line but it goes very quickly, waited in queue for about 10 mins (came an hour before closing time which probably explains it) Very delicious, not overly sweet but still has great flavour and wonderful presentation.
S C — Google review
This pudding specialty shop is clearly beloved by both tourists and locals in Nikko, offering various flavors in cute bottles including an unusual soy sauce-topped version that tastes like dipping eggs in soy sauce. The pudding has an interesting texture - less like typical jiggly pudding and more like a smooth, non-Newtonian fluid that creates a uniquely creamy mouthfeel. The basic Nikko pudding was the standout flavor, though all the varieties were enjoyable. It’s a fun local specialty that makes for a nice snack while exploring Nikko, and the cute packaging makes it memorable. Worth trying as a sweet break during your temple and shrine visits.

They have a foreign girl who speaks good English & fluent Japanese - was easy to order and understand the flow of things. Tried quite a number of flavours - think we ordered about 8 jars total for 5 of us. One that stood out most to me was the ice cream & original pudding. Ice cream was very creamy & not overly sweet, and the pudding after finishing the ice cream was a delight. I'd recommend it! Don't forget to swap your used glasses for an empty one. Very cute to take home.

The original nikko pudding was really nice, soft and smooth. The strawberry one is so so, too eggy and the sauce is too sweet. I wish I bought the original instead of this. The shop is always busy and quite small so it is hard to sit and eat there. They do provide the ice pack if you take out and need to travel somewhere. Packaging was super cute though! If you are around. It’s good to check them out !

It costs ¥500 per piece (2024/05). The outside is crispy and the curry filling is fragrant. It’s really delicious. I personally think it’s better than the curry bread opposite. I recommend it to everyone.

I will give zero star if I can. It has a spectacular view offshore though, the owner is unkind and has no passion to run the business. I will recommend tourists to buy drinks from the vending machine rather than step inside this coffee shop.

Nikko Castella Honpo Honten is a popular spot located near the train station, offering a variety of dining experiences. Aoi Gozen offers a delightful dining experience with beautifully presented meals like Aoi Gozen, featuring vegetarian tapas and chestnut rice.
I din,t like there lunch item in there all of item is for vegetarian. But the souvenir item in first floor is pretty good.
Mr. P — Google review
Had the Aoi Gozen for lunch and it was quite the treat, especially after wandering around Ueno Toshogu Shrine. The meal was beautifully presented and just the right size, featuring a variety of vegetarian tapas like pickles, tofu, and agar, all paired with chestnut rice and a soup. A delightful dining experience! However, the restaurant's layout was a bit cramped, with tables packed too closely together. It made getting in and out a bit of a challenge, especially for those seated further inside. I was in the middle, so it was slightly easier for me, but I couldn't help but think about anyone needing to make frequent trips to the restroom. It could definitely be a hassle. So, while the meal itself was enjoyable, the seating arrangement could use some rethinking. Giving it a 3.5-star rating for the great food but less-than-ideal space management.

Two main highlights - buckwheat galette (aka gluten free) and milk alternatives (currently only soy). Those two are ratities in Japan! Also, sweet and white breads that are close to their expiration date are being sold at a discount. However, the original price is quite high, so even with the discount, it's still quite expensive m(_ _)m (Original)

Fresh strawberries come with yogurt, a rich cheese-like sweet. This yogurt has a rich flavor that can be mistaken for cheese. It was very delicious. The strawberries on top are paste-like and have a sweet and sour taste, just like fresh strawberries. Combined with the rich condensed milk, the strawberry milk fills your mouth. It said it was limited to 20 servings, and even though it was around noon, there were still some left, so I had it. My companion ordered matcha, but since I don't like condensed milk, I only ordered matcha without condensed milk. Matcha milk costs 900 yen, but if you only get matcha without condensed milk, it will cost 1,000 yen. It looks like matcha sorbet, but it has a strong shaved ice flavor that is very satisfying. The roasted sweet potato that came as an accompaniment had a sticky, elegant sweetness that intertwined with the taste of matcha and was delicious. Personally, I was a little disappointed that it didn't have condensed milk.

Cafe
Coffee shop
Nestled in the picturesque Nikko Kirorin Kogen Chirorin Village, Cafe OWL is a delightful spot that draws visitors from across Japan, especially during the summer months. The cafe's highlight is its exquisite shaved ice, crafted from natural Nikko ice and topped with homemade syrups made from local Tochiotome strawberries, yuzu citrus, and blueberries. This results in a refreshing treat that's both soft and bursting with fruity sweetness.
(Translated by Google) I came here in the evening looking for a night cafe. Dinner has a wide variety of menus, from meals to snacks. The atmosphere inside the store is calm and I think it's perfect for when you want to have a little chat after work. This time, I ordered cod spaghetti and cheese spring rolls. The mentaiko spaghetti was extremely delicious. The amount of mentaiko was quite large, and the spiciness of the mentaiko itself was a great accent. As for the cheese spring rolls, they were very crispy and the spring rolls had a nice brown color. I went to a cafe at night, so I ordered a cafe au lait and a non-alcoholic cocktail, but it seemed like there was a wide variety of drinks. The store staff also made a very good impression, so even if it's your first time visiting, you can use the store with confidence.

(Translated by Google) It's always crowded at lunchtime. The food is delicious no matter what you eat. Even the green karoo that I was not good at started eating this and loving it. It had a strong spiciness and was really delicious. This time I had the oil and chicken lunch. It was a little different from the image, but it was delicious. I think it would have been better if there were more green onions and more acidity. The cost performance is poor. It's delicious, but the quantity is always small. The chicken that day was actually a little smaller than the photo, and I thought, ``Oh, I knew it.'' If there are a lot of items in the set, this amount of main and rice is fine, but it feels like a lord's business. I think we can do this because we are a purveyor to city hall employees. It's such a poor price that I can't believe it's the same price as Weathervane. What's even more disappointing is that the tea in the set is also the cheapest tea pack. It was a tea like that.

There was so much sauce that I didn't want to leave it behind, so I poured it over rice. Very satisfied. It's not pictured, but it comes with salad, cherry tomatoes, and a drink. I decided to return because I want to try other menu items and parfaits. (Translated by Google) The atmosphere of the store is good. At lunch time, the place was full and mostly female customers. Pork ginger (1,000 yen) had pork mixed in ginger sauce and had a fatty texture. It was a little different from what I had imagined, but I think people who like it will like it. (Translated by Google) I visited you for lunch. The restaurant is quite spacious, with counter and table seating. As it was lunch time, it was quite crowded. I went early so I was able to get a seat with plenty of time, but it gets crowded around 12:00. I had a large serving of chicken curry. Just the right amount of spiciness, and the meat is soft and fluffy! It comes with salad and drink for 950 yen. I was very satisfied. If you want a strong soup, I would have liked a cup of soup, even if it was small. I look forward to hearing from you again.
